Gateway M-7317u Pentium Dual-Core T3200 2.0GHz 3GB 160GB DVD±RW DL 15.4" Vista Home Premium (Blue) Review

Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)The performance of this laptop is incredible! Its dual core 2.0 ghz processor can handle pretty much anything you throw at it. And it does this at a cool 43C and 64C under full load. My intel atom computer idles at 38C and, under full load averages 55C.
There are only two things i dont like about this computer are the fact that you cannot install windows xp on it. The hardware simply wont accept it, it bluescreens during installation; and the graphics chip is kinda bad. It can handle most stuff, including bluray movies outputting to a 52" plasma via HDMI just fine, but it will put a lot of stress on it. The main cpu gets up to about 73C at that point and where the graphics chip is, is too hot to touch for too long(about 96C estimated). It can run Call of Duty Modern Warfare which is a highly graphics intensive game, but you have to go to computer properties and set everything for performance as opposed to appearance. Certain games just wont run on an integrated chip no matter what, even if it can process it at 5% load. One notable game is Just Cause 2.
It has brought me 18 months of happiness at the time of writing this review; and i will gladly keep it until it dies, but if i can get it sold, i wouldnt mind "trading"(selling and using the money to buy another one)it for something new. You will notice i have this listed for sale.

Sony VAIO VGN-P788K/R 8-Inch Red Laptop (Windows 7 Home Premium) Review

Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)I've had one of these for a year. Real display - 1600x768 - means you can write code, make presentations, and look at web sites properly. Not fast enough for games, but nearly full size keyboard makes it fine for writing and just about anything else. So compact it travels in my briefcase in a side pocket as a backup. Runs Ubuntu as a second OS with native screen resolution no problem. Battery life short, but I added a 4 cell battery which does as well as an 11' air - in half the size. IBM style pointing stick takes a little to get used to - so I carry a mouse as well.

Gigabyte T1028X 10.1 inch Touch Screen Tablet PC - N280 1.66Ghz / 1366x768 / 2G SDRAM / 160GB HDD / 6 Cell / Windows 7 Starter Review

Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)This is a great little computer that works well as a notebook, as a netbook, as a touch tablet, and as an eBook reader. However, it does require a bit of technical knowledge to get it set up how you want it because the amount of documentation and support from the GIGABYTE website is VERY limited, and you will NEVER be able to talk to a real person to get issues resolved (which is why I gave it 4 stars rather than 5). I received the computer quickly from the 3rd party sales vendor.
For more input, read the other reviews of the 1028X floating around on Amazon.

Sony VAIO VPC-X111KX/B 11.1-Inch Widescreen (Black) Review

Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)I am writing this review on an almost brand new sony vaio x. This has to be the very best designed notebook computer ever! The Macbook Air looks very plain next to a vaio x. Under 1.5 lb! Superb carbon fiber construction and more importantly if someone didn't tell you this had an Atom processor there is no way you would know. It performs pretty well for a notebook with 2Gb RAM. The graphics performance isn't great, but the SSD drive and 2.0GHz Atom are pretty good for regular computing.
I augmented my 64 GB SSD drive with a 16GB SD card and 16GB Memory card to give me almost 100 GB of storage. I like having the option of removable memory cards.
The extended battery gives me over 12 hours and is included with the notebook.
As a point of reference I own a Sony Vaio FW for office work and use my X for travel and home use. The Vaio X comes with Windows 7 Home Premium, which means I can watch Netflix streaming and other online content from Windows Media Center. I can't think of any other netbook with Home Premium.
If you want thin and portable and hands down the best notebook in it's class you can't go wrong with the x. It's expensive, but good things often are. I paid over $6K for my 60 inch Pioneer Kuro plasma when in came out in 2008. There were certainly cheaper options, but none better...I feel exactly the same way about the Vaio x. It's an almost perfect ultra portable machine. I love the key board and not sure a tablet would be better than this - Windows Home Premium (mouse pad has multi touch) and 12 hours battery life and under 1.5lb!
UPDATE: June 10 2010
I recently posted my comparison of the Vaio X to an iPad I bought recently. The review may help folks who want to compare a high end netbook v. an iPad.

(More customer reviews)I got this computer after my last one blew up last year, and am very pleased with it's performance. The Pentium is okay for most work, the GMA, while comparably wimpy, can play many of the latest games, if not very well (think of a dancing bear). The case is not very tolerant of dropping, and mine has several cracks from dropping, but nothing that effects the operation. My only problems besides my own messing up of it, was the charger: don't drop the laptop when plugged in, even from a few feet, as it will cause the charger to bend out of shape; it is very easy to do this to it, and you will need to get a new one from HP, which without warranty, will set you back $30. An excellent all-rounder, which tramples most tasks, and at least tries at the high-end stuff.

Lenovo ThinkPad SL510 28479WU 15.6-Inch Laptop (Black) - 3GB DDR3 320GB HDD (Windows XP/7 Pro Upgrade) Review

Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)I have been using my new computer for about a month. It is superior. It starts up fast and doesn't come loaded with a bunch of intrusive dreck. The keyboard is good, and the screen is large and bright.
There are three things I don't like about the Lenovo:
It is very plain looking. I bought a laptop 'skin' for it, and that individualizes it, and makes it look sharp.
It's Chinese. I would rather buy American. However, the Dells and HPs I have bought lately have broken down quickly.
There's a little red 'pointer thingy' between the G and H keys on the keyboard. I have gotten used to it, but it's taken a while.
All in all, a great machine.

HP 15.6" Pavilion G62-225NR Entertainment Notebook PC Review

Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)It is worth having this beautiful laptop. I am a Writer and Published Author of two books "Speechless Thunder" and "It Looked Like Earth" plus I have published one song in Nashville, TN called "It Is Me Or Superman" and they are working on a Record now. soon to be out for sale.
Anyways, where I am going with this and with my little background which I use my computers every day for writing. This computer is good for entertainmet and is great for writing your books and homework for school, reading e-mails, watching a movie, and on top of all of that, for those of you that did not like the smudges that was created on the dv7 series of laptops, this one is less prone to that. Though I still keep my dv7 series :) both of them are my great working tools. Plus I have another one which is dv7 bought it for my parents. All of my three computers which are HP are great and I love HP. So, don't hasitate to buy this one G62-225NR Notebook. And with its size of 15.6" you can carry it anywhere, for those that love smaller computers. But you can also, get the bigger variation which does have 500GB hard drive and 4gb Memory Ram. But for the memory on this beautiful little one is 3GB, and you get 350GB spacious Hard drive. And give or take it is budget and energy saver. For those that don't need alot of Hard drive it is great. And on your pocket wallet, you don't have to pay extra 500 dollars for the extra drive and +1gb memory. Though for the memory you can upgrade and so you can the harddrive anytime. It is also pretty fast and I love it!!!
So, buy it and you won't regret it. Plus School is beginning and many students would love to own one and parents would be thrilled to get them this, and as I said, it is perfect on the pocket book :)
Also, never forget, to keep your computers clean and you can use for screen and keyboard "Endust for Electronics Screen Cleaner"
It does the Job marvioulasley
and excellent!!!
I forgot to mention, it does have a built in camera!!! For those that are wondering. There is one that is simillar sold in Walmart that does not have.

Hercules eCafe EC-1000W 10.1-Inch Netbook - Up to 6 Hours of Battery Life Review

Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)I like netbooks and typically go for the smaller versions. The Hercules eCafe is a little larger than my Asus eeePC or my HP mini. I first thought it'd be a pain to carry around in my purse but so far, I've not really noticed a big difference EXCEPT for the benefits of having a slightly larger netbook.
1. The screen size is larger (obviously) but the extra real estate really makes it much more functional for me. I find myself only scrolling up and down and much less left and right. I don't move windows around as much and it's just easier to use because of that.
2. The keyboard is incredibly easier to use. On my other netbooks I feel like I'm typing on a mini-sized keyboard (which they are). On this one, my fingers are a little closer together but I feel like I can type at almost regular speed and without having to check where my fingers are all the time. The typos are less frequent. SO much better.
3. The color on the screen is on par with other netbooks I've seen. Acceptable.
4. One of my favorite features is the eCafe features. It is a nice, simple interface that gets you to email and browsing and other goodies quickly. They're like shortcuts with a little more style and functionality.
5. Wireless (wifi) connectivity is TERRIFIC! There's a little button you slide to connect to a local wireless network, which then shows you all available networks and if they're locked or public and the signal strength, and then you connect. It's very simple. And there is a light that lights up when you are connected. Nice visual indicator.
6. The design on the top is more gender-neutral than some I've seen. I share this with other family members so the design is a good fit. Mine is blue with a silhouette of bamboo I think. No flowers. I'm all for flowers but it likely wouldn't go over well with my son.
7. This little thing has a great selection of ports available. The two USB ports are handy and so is the memory card slot. One of my other netbooks only has 1 USB port.
8. The office suite that is preloaded on this is really very functional. When I first opened the word processing program (which isn't Word) I thought it was Microsoft Word. They're compatible with Office programs, too. And they're FREE.
9. THE CAMERA is pretty darned good. I shot video and photos of myself and talked with my nephew on Skype. The quality was way better than expected.
Now the two things that bug me a little.
1. It's heavier. Yes, it's bigger so it's going to be heavier. But it is noticeably "chunkier" and heftier when lifting with one hand. Not a deal breaker for me though.
2. The keys are louder when typing. Also, not a dealbreaker.
Netbooks are a big change from a laptop. They take some getting used to. However, this is more like a mini-laptop than a netbook in my opinion. The free online storage is a plus, too.

HP Compaq Presario CQ60-615DX 15.6" 2GB 250GB Laptop Review

Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)Being a computer technician for the last 15 years, I am very picky when it comes to buying computers, especially laptops and even more special, laptops with Celeron CPUs. This is my very first Celeron laptop and I have to tell you that I am surprised and amazed at the performance of this particular Celeron. Todays Celeron CPUs are NOT the Celeron CPUs of 10 years ago. These new Celeron 900 are based on Core 2 Duo CPUs. They are exactly the same except for 2 things: They have 25% less Cache than their Core 2 Duo counterpart and they are single core, but that doesn't mean it's slow by any means. This laptop came with 2GB of RAM (I upgraded it to the full 4GB), a 15.6" HD LCD Screen, a 250GB Hard Drive running at 7200 RPM - yes you are reading right - 7200 RPM! - Most laptops out there have a 5400 RPM HD, including the more expensive models, so this is a real bonus. It comes with B, G, and N Wireless, Intel 4500 Graphics, 2 USB Ports and a DVD Writer.
The performance of this laptop is quite good. Very fast booting up. Windows open smoothly. Tasks are handled quite well, even with 2GB of RAM. The 4GB of RAM makes things even better. The Celeron 900 2.2 GHz CPU inside packs quite a punch. Take a look at this benchmark:
[...]
It is by no means a weak processor. Overall this is a great laptop for $329.00 (BestBuy). Much better than a Netbook for sure (since that is what I was going to buy in the first place). Netbooks have no CD or DVD units, only 1GB of RAM, Slow Atom CPUs and 8 to 10 inch screens and cost over $350.00 (a good one). This laptop simply beats the netbooks in price, power and features. You will not be able to do serious video editing or play online games like Unreal Tournament 3, Crysis or things like that because of the limited video card, but hey let's get real, who uses a laptop to play games anyways? That's what desktops are for. If you are going to be mobile (traveling), going to school or simply work at the office then this is the perfect machine for you. If you are into web surfing, email and Microsoft Office and on a budget then look no further. For the price, you are getting a quality built machine with everything you need to do. All that and a little more. The components inside (motherboard and chipset) are all made by Intel.
I highly recommend it.

Acer AS7741Z-5731 Notebook 1.86GHZ, 250GB, 3GB, 17.3" DVD Webcam Win7 7741Z-5731 Review

Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)This is my first personal laptop and so far it has been a great purchase. I am a gamer that also does a lot of professional audio/video recording and editing and this laptop has been able to handle everything so far without any big problems. I am still looking for a usb interface for my audio inputs and outputs (Im used to a pci card interface for my board), but thats a whole nother beast. I am able to get 48-60 fps when playing 3d games and the wireless adapter has very little latency (around 200ms, which is ok in my experience compared to other wireless setups I have used). The range of the adapter is impressive, I can get a signal much further than my wife's toshiba. Battery life is a little over 3 hours in my experience when using the web and much less when playing games. Screen size is excellent and is true 16:9 aspect ratio, which suits my hd editing perfectly. picture quality is also very good. I have watched many dvd's while staying in hotels on this unit. In my 2+ months of owning it I have had only one problem that seems to have gone away. Initially, the video driver was hanging up, causing my screen to blank out for a few seconds during 3d gameplay, but windows was able to recover quickly every time and resume play without losing anything. This has not happened in the past few weeks. Windows reported it as a driver failure and I think the driver has been updated to fix the problem. I paid a little less than the stated price of $498 at walmart for this computer and could not be happier. Goodbye desktop! My mother was impressed with the machine and bought one soon after I did with the same results, very satisfied. One word of advice in closing, make sure the unit has enough space for proper airflow during 3d acceleration, it gets warm when 3d is used due to the video being on chip.

IBM ThinkPad R40 Laptop (1.8 GHz Pentium 4-M, 256 MB RAM, 20GB Hard Drive, DVD/CD-RW Drive) Review

Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)... did not really review Model 2681CU1 as shown on this website. This models comes with Pentium 4 -Mobile 1.8 Ghz, 256MB Ram, 20GB Harddrive, CD-RW/DVD-ROM drive.
Like the first reviewer said, the 20GB drive should really be called 16GB drive, and in reality, because IBM reserves about 4GB to store recovery info, leaving you with about 10-11GB of hard disk space you can use, so if you really need a lot of hard disk space, beware that instead of 18.6GB, you'll only be getting about 10GB.
Boot up on my machine takes about 1 minute with PC cillin Antivirus running, (booting to Win XP Home) so if you are used to 20 sec bootups, this machine will be slow to you on a bootup. However, once all of the programs are loaded, the computer performs pretty fast. Also, please note that the Hardrive is about 4200 RPM, so replacing the Disk for a higher RPM's will shorten the boot up time.
IBM does not provide a lot of software, I believe I only had Norton AV 2003, PC Doctor and Adobe (among others). You can type the Model number in IBM's website and get the exact detailed specs of what exactly comes (and does not come) with this laptop.
What I like is that the Norton AV and all other applications do NOT load automatically. You have to go to START--> Programs --->Norton AV 2003 and it will start installing Norton AV 2003. My previous laptop had all of the software already preloaded, which made it a little more painful, because you ended up uninstalling a bunch of useless programs you did not need.
The laptop's case is relatively sturdy and appears like it can take the ocasional bruising without major impact.
Also, the BIOS on this laptops comes configured to MAX BATTERY mode, which means that if you are booting from the battery (i.e the AC adapter is not plugged in) your CPU Speed Step will keep the CPU cycles to 1.2Ghz maximum even if your power options says "Always ON". Setting the power setting to AUTOMATIC (in BIOS) will fix this.
BEFORE YOU ADJUST BIOS, call IBM tech support to make minimize your chance for errors.
I was impressed with the quality of IBM tech support. I 'd say that I got a live person within 2 minutes and the tech support was somewhere in the US, as opposed to overseas.
Battery life seems to be close to 2.5-3hrs, though I have not had a chance to test it out fully. When fully charges, the battery indicator says that 3 hours is left.
Beware that this laptop does not come with a floppy drive.
I think that the reason this Laptop costs $1100 is that there are Pentium M chips that are out, replacing P4M's.
Oh, and last thing, I have IBM T23 at work and found that the ultrabay drives used with T23 are compatible with R40's (all except R40e) drives. Check IBM's website for verification. ...

Part of IBM's "R" series of ThinkPad mobile computers, the new ThinkPad R40 (2681CU1) Notebook delivers mid-level performance and wireless upgradeability for a price that won't break the bank. Quite compact when compared to the majority of notebooks and backed by IBM's comforting three-year no-hassle warranty and 24/7 support, the ThinkPad R40 (2681CU1) is an ideal solution for those who prioritize portability and post-purchase security.
Driven by a 1.8 GHz Intel Pentium 4-M processor, 256 MB PC2100 DDR SDRAM memory (expandable to 1 full GB) and a 16 MB ATI Mobility Radeon M6 graphics chipset, the ThinkPad R40 (2681CU1) is powerful enough for most standard mobile tasks, including some 3-D applications. However, anyone who wants to utilize the system in a demanding multi-tasking business environment or play high-end 3-D games may want to explore one of IBM's many upscale ThinkPads instead.
The ThinkPad R40 (2681CU1) delivers manageable portability in any environment, tipping the scales at just 6.3 to 6.7 pounds (depending on carrying configuration) and measuring 12.3 by 10 by 1.5 inches. IBM has equipped the unit with a minimal 20 GB hard disk; a CD-RW/DVD-ROM drive for loading your latest apps, playing and burning audio discs, archiving data and watching movies; and a midsize 14.1-inch TFT display screen capable of 1024 by 768 resolution.
Surprisingly, the cost-conscious ThinkPad R40 (2681CU1) is home to many unique and practical perks, including a nifty keyboard-illuminating ThinkLight for low-light situations, a one-touch "Access ThinkPad" online support button, an S-Video out port, two high-speed USB 2.0 ports for fast interaction with external peripherals, and a full-size keyboard featuring IBM's user-friendly ThinkPad UltraNav multi-pointing system. Connectivity options include a low-speed 56K fax/modem, an RJ-45 Ethernet connector for high-speed Internet, email and network access, and wireless upgradeability. Battery life is estimated at a very impressive 6.1 hours under optimal conditions.

Sbuy Mobile Workation 8540W Core I7-520CPU 2.66GHZ/320GB 7200RPM HDD/ 2X2GB Ram/ Review

Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)Now, this is my first amazon review, but thought you might all enjoy to learn what a great value this computer is.
So now I have had this computer since May 17th 2010 and here are my thoughts.
With windows xp preinstalled, it is great, but I wanted to use windows 7, so to do that you have to shut the computer off and boot from one of the disks that comes in the box along with the laptop, very easy. Now the install of windows 7 took about an hour and 11 minutes. After that though, the second disk that comes with the box, you HAVE TO HAVE, otherwise none of the drivers will install and you will have trouble using the computer. So just pop in that second disk, and it has all the driver software, and useful hp protecttools manager on it. I highly recommend installing all of the software off of the discs except for hp skyroom. But what the hp protecttools is good for is using the integrated smart card reader or finger printer scanner to log onto windows. This is great. I will say however, the metal around the finger print reader does show usage, but it just wipes off.
Now the computer itself is very solid, bottom made out of plastic. Top out of metal. The screen is very great. On other sites that have complaints about viewing angles, I can say I have had no issues with this 1600x900 screen. And from any angle the colors are bright and clear. Now the webcam is great also. Now many may not know, but this computer runs games great. At 1280x800 I got 25 FPS on high graphics on Crysis. On games such as Flatout or X-Men origins: wolverine. I got well beyound 40 FPS on ultra high. And this is all while the computer is not hot comparatively to other Alienware gaming laptops.
I have to say my favorite features on this laptop are the multi-gesture touch pad, and the little led light on the screen for using the keyboard in darker enviroments. I have been using this computer as my school laptop and you would be amazed at how light it is. Now in comparison to an HP Pavillion G62, This computer kicks.
Overall I love this laptop and highly recommend it.

Acer Aspire AS7741G-3647 17.3-Inch Notebook Review

(More customer reviews)I received this laptop 2 weeks ago and everything seems to be working great. Runs Total War Empires just fine except that extended playing leads to the laptop heating up. For everyday use this laptop far exceeds the specs you need. For this price, I could not find a better deal.

HP Brushed Aluminum 17.3" Pavilion DV7-4087CL Laptop PC with Intel Core i5-430M Processor & Windows 7 Home Premium Review

Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)This computer can do everything I can imagine and more. The screen is big and bright and you're up and running out of the box in just a few minutes. There's only 1 major problem for me and that's the touchpad. I am a heavy Adobe Photoshop user and I simply cannot hold down the left mouse button and use the touchpad. It's very stiff. I've tried changing every setting, but it's not a setting issue. It's simply hard to depress and make selections. I purchased a Bamboo touch for $35 at Best Buy and it is just too awkward to use. The salesperson at Sam's told me he didn't like the touchpad and I read other reviews that said the same thing, but I couldn't imagine a touchpad would be a make or break item for such a nice laptop - but it is. So, this is not going to be the computer for me. Otherwise it is just great.

Acer Aspire AS7551-2531 17.3-Inch Laptop (Black) Review

Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)The first thing I noticed when I turned this laptop on was the big beautiful bright screen. The second thing was that this looks like it should have cost way more than it did. The styling and ergonomics are very professional looking. The keyboard is easy to use and fits my larger fingers with ease, and I love the full included 10-key pad. The multi-touch touchpad is big and responsive. I love the built-in scroll function. I have installed Microsoft Office 2010, Photoshop CS5, WinAMP, Civilization IV, and Assassin's Creed so far, and all the programs run beautifully. I am not getting great speed out of Photoshop, but that is to be expected, after all this is a laptop. I especially love the hi-def visualizations in WinAMP. The dual-core processor so far has handled multitasking well. I was listening to music, burning DVDs, and playing Civ IV all at the same time with no problems. Windows 7 made connecting to my wireless network a snap, and I noticed much faster file transfer speeds with this laptop than i was getting with my Win XP desktop.
The only real complaint I have with this product is the lack of built-in bluetooth. But for less than 600 bucks, I can't expect everything. One other area where Acer went wrong is partnering with McAfee for antivirus protection. Ladies and Gentlemen, McAfee SUCKS. I quickly uninstalled it and installed ESET antivirus instead. Other small complaints include all the "free" trials of software preinstalled on the hard drive, and, the touchpad is maybe just a little TOO big, sometimes when typing my palm hits it, sending my cursor flying off.
This computer won't play the newest and greatest games, but it handles everything else I've thrown at it with ease. Unless you need a hardcore gaming rig or the ability to render hi-def video in realtime, you can't beat this machine for the price.

(More customer reviews)Just bought this yesterday at Best Buy $349. My old DELL crashed, I really like the light weight and even with a smaller screen you get used to it pretty fast. Upgrading from Win XP to Win 7 takes a little time if you just dabble on the comp. I would recommend this. One thing to know, Best Buy has the GEEK Squad preload all their systems and then wants to charge you an additional $70 for this service. I balked at this as nothing is mentioned in the ad that they do this. Since they did not have one that had not already been pre-loaded and I made my argument and did not have to pay for this 'service'. Good to know..

Lenovo G560 Series 067999U Laptop (Black) Review

Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
If you want a basic laptop with excellent price to performance, this is a good choice. Looks and feels sturdy, minimum flex, relatively light, excellent display (fonts could be sharper), very nice keyboard, DVD writer, and enough RAM (4GB) and HD (320 GB) for normal home use. No HDMI port, weak sound, and no fancy bells and whistles. Battery life seems to be reasonable (3 hrs fully charged on a 6-cell battery). Overall, an excellent value for money, especially compared to similarly configured Dell, Sony, or Toshiba (which cost anywhere from $150 to $250 more).
