I have had this laptop for 4 years now. To this day, I love it and it competes with recently released laptops in terms of processing power, size, and overall comfort of use. Only downside would be the battery life but thats what a charger is for. Well worth the money.

The 17-Inch PowerBook G4 received an 11% performance boost to 1.67 GHz and gained an 8x DVR±RW SuperDrive. The standard hard drive now spins at 5400 rpm. ATI Mobility Radeon 9700 graphics are included, along with 128 MB of video memory and support for Dual-Link DVI. Also new on the 17-Inch PowerBook is an optical digital I/O connector. Bluetooth 2.0 (up to 3x faster than the old standard) and AirPort Extreme are now standard features on all PowerBooks, and the 2005 models add two new technologies: a scrolling trackpad and motion sensing. Scrolling with the trackpad requires the use of two fingers, and motion sensing is meant to protect the hard drive if the PowerBook is dropped.

First of all, I got mine for $[...] plus shipping. Second, mine has 4 GB RAM and a 2.53 GHz processor. These specs may be different than the unit you're considering.
PROS: Slim, responsive, speakers sound great, display looks great for watching movies, love the HUGE hard disk, push button volume and mute
CONS: Kind of bulky (but what can you expect from a 16" display?), keyboard quite small - especially for the amount of space available, only two USB ports (at least they're on opposite sides), obnoxious low-battery warning that can only be turned off if ALL sound is turned off, hard drive not as big as advertised, display doesn't have a very wide viewing angle especially for dark colors, would have preferred a larger battery option, even with most exotic feature disabled the mousepad seems to do things I don't expect, hard disk not really as big as advertised (see below)
THOUGHTS: I know my con list is bigger than my pro list, but don't let that fool you - I'm just picky. I had to buy a new laptop because my 2-year-old Toshiba (which I never really liked) was going off to blue-screen-of-death world far too often. This seems to be a solid, if not spectacular, model, especially if you can get it for as low a price as I did. It lasts about 2.5 hours on battery, assuming you're not using the DVD drive or watching video. I've read complaints about the display not being that great for gaming, but that's not what I'm using it for.
About the hard drive, it's advertised as 320 GB, but it really only has about 250 GB of usable space. The hard drive is partitioned into a 252 GB C: drive and a 30 GB D: drive. (Supposedly there's another hidden "service" partition using about 15 GB.) You have to keep everything partitioned this way if you want one key recovery to work. That means you lose about 20% of your hard drive for a feature you'll probably never use.
FINALLY: Please, please, please, please, please stop pre-installying so much crap ware. And I almost forgot - WINDOWS VISTA SUCKS! (It reminds me of a description I read about AOL years ago: I'm mad as hell and I AM going to take it some more!) But at least my "free" ($15+ for handling from Lenovo) upgrade to Windows 7 is coming.

I've had one of these for a year. Real display - 1600x768 - means you can write code, make presentations, and look at web sites properly. Not fast enough for games, but nearly full size keyboard makes it fine for writing and just about anything else. So compact it travels in my briefcase in a side pocket as a backup. Runs Ubuntu as a second OS with native screen resolution no problem. Battery life short, but I added a 4 cell battery which does as well as an 11' air - in half the size. IBM style pointing stick takes a little to get used to - so I carry a mouse as well.

I am writing this review on an almost brand new sony vaio x. This has to be the very best designed notebook computer ever! The Macbook Air looks very plain next to a vaio x. Under 1.5 lb! Superb carbon fiber construction and more importantly if someone didn't tell you this had an Atom processor there is no way you would know. It performs pretty well for a notebook with 2Gb RAM. The graphics performance isn't great,but the SSD drive and 2.0GHz Atom are pretty good for regular computing.
I augmented my 64 GB SSD drive with a 16GB SD card and 16GB Memory card to give me almost 100 GB of storage. I like having the option of removable memory cards.
The extended battery gives me over 12 hours and is included with the notebook.
As a point of reference I own a Sony Vaio FW for office work and use my X for travel and home use. The Vaio X comes with Windows 7 Home Premium, which means I can watch Netflix streaming and other online content from Windows Media Center. I can't think of any other netbook with Home Premium.
If you want thin and portable and hands down the best notebook in it's class you can't go wrong with the x. It's expensive, but good things often are. I paid over $6K for my 60 inch Pioneer Kuro plasma when in came out in 2008. There were certainly cheaper options, but none better...I feel exactly the same way about the Vaio x. It's an almost perfect ultra portable machine. I love the key board and not sure a tablet would be better than this - Windows Home Premium (mouse pad has multi touch) and 12 hours battery life and under 1.5lb!
UPDATE: June 10 2010
I recently posted my comparison of the Vaio X to an iPad I bought recently. The review may help folks who want to compare a high end netbook v. an iPad.

... did not really review Model 2681CU1 as shown on this website. This models comes with Pentium 4 -Mobile 1.8 Ghz, 256MB Ram, 20GB Harddrive, CD-RW/DVD-ROM drive.
Like the first reviewer said, the 20GB drive should really be called 16GB drive, and in reality, because IBM reserves about 4GB to store recovery info, leaving you with about 10-11GB of hard disk space you can use, so if you really need a lot of hard disk space, beware that instead of 18.6GB, you'll only be getting about 10GB.
Boot up on my machine takes about 1 minute with PC cillin Antivirus running, (booting to Win XP Home) so if you are used to 20 sec bootups, this machine will be slow to you on a bootup. However, once all of the programs are loaded, the computer performs pretty fast. Also, please note that the Hardrive is about 4200 RPM, so replacing the Disk for a higher RPM's will shorten the boot up time.
IBM does not provide a lot of software, I believe I only had Norton AV 2003, PC Doctor and Adobe (among others). You can type the Model number in IBM's website and get the exact detailed specs of what exactly comes (and does not come) with this laptop.
What I like is that the Norton AV and all other applications do NOT load automatically. You have to go to START--> Programs --->Norton AV 2003 and it will start installing Norton AV 2003. My previous laptop had all of the software already preloaded, which made it a little more painful, because you ended up uninstalling a bunch of useless programs you did not need.
The laptop's case is relatively sturdy and appears like it can take the ocasional bruising without major impact.
Also, the BIOS on this laptops comes configured to MAX BATTERY mode, which means that if you are booting from the battery (i.e the AC adapter is not plugged in) your CPU Speed Step will keep the CPU cycles to 1.2Ghz maximum even if your power options says "Always ON". Setting the power setting to AUTOMATIC (in BIOS) will fix this.
BEFORE YOU ADJUST BIOS, call IBM tech support to make minimize your chance for errors.
I was impressed with the quality of IBM tech support. I 'd say that I got a live person within 2 minutes and the tech support was somewhere in the US, as opposed to overseas.
Battery life seems to be close to 2.5-3hrs, though I have not had a chance to test it out fully. When fully charges, the battery indicator says that 3 hours is left.
Beware that this laptop does not come with a floppy drive.
I think that the reason this Laptop costs $1100 is that there are Pentium M chips that are out, replacing P4M's.
Oh, and last thing, I have IBM T23 at work and found that the ultrabay drives used with T23 are compatible with R40's (all except R40e) drives. Check IBM's website for verification. ...

Part of IBM's "R" series of ThinkPad mobile computers, the new ThinkPad R40 (2681CU1) Notebook delivers mid-level performance and wireless upgradeability for a price that won't break the bank. Quite compact when compared to the majority of notebooks and backed by IBM's comforting three-year no-hassle warranty and 24/7 support, the ThinkPad R40 (2681CU1) is an ideal solution for those who prioritize portability and post-purchase security.
Driven by a 1.8 GHz Intel Pentium 4-M processor, 256 MB PC2100 DDR SDRAM memory (expandable to 1 full GB) and a 16 MB ATI Mobility Radeon M6 graphics chipset, the ThinkPad R40 (2681CU1) is powerful enough for most standard mobile tasks, including some 3-D applications. However, anyone who wants to utilize the system in a demanding multi-tasking business environment or play high-end 3-D games may want to explore one of IBM's many upscale ThinkPads instead.
The ThinkPad R40 (2681CU1) delivers manageable portability in any environment, tipping the scales at just 6.3 to 6.7 pounds (depending on carrying configuration) and measuring 12.3 by 10 by 1.5 inches. IBM has equipped the unit with a minimal 20 GB hard disk; a CD-RW/DVD-ROM drive for loading your latest apps, playing and burning audio discs, archiving data and watching movies; and a midsize 14.1-inch TFT display screen capable of 1024 by 768 resolution.
Surprisingly, the cost-conscious ThinkPad R40 (2681CU1) is home to many unique and practical perks, including a nifty keyboard-illuminating ThinkLight for low-light situations, a one-touch "Access ThinkPad" online support button, an S-Video out port, two high-speed USB 2.0 ports for fast interaction with external peripherals, and a full-size keyboard featuring IBM's user-friendly ThinkPad UltraNav multi-pointing system. Connectivity options include a low-speed 56K fax/modem, an RJ-45 Ethernet connector for high-speed Internet, email and network access, and wireless upgradeability. Battery life is estimated at a very impressive 6.1 hours under optimal conditions.

Now, this is my first amazon review, but thought you might all enjoy to learn what a great value this computer is.
So now I have had this computer since May 17th 2010 and here are my thoughts.
With windows xp preinstalled, it is great, but I wanted to use windows 7, so to do that you have to shut the computer off and boot from one of the disks that comes in the box along with the laptop, very easy. Now the install of windows 7 took about an hour and 11 minutes. After that though, the second disk that comes with the box, you HAVE TO HAVE, otherwise none of the drivers will install and you will have trouble using the computer. So just pop in that second disk, and it has all the driver software, and useful hp protecttools manager on it. I highly recommend installing all of the software off of the discs except for hp skyroom. But what the hp protecttools is good for is using the integrated smart card reader or finger printer scanner to log onto windows. This is great. I will say however, the metal around the finger print reader does show usage, but it just wipes off.
Now the computer itself is very solid, bottom made out of plastic. Top out of metal. The screen is very great. On other sites that have complaints about viewing angles, I can say I have had no issues with this 1600x900 screen. And from any angle the colors are bright and clear. Now the webcam is great also. Now many may not know, but this computer runs games great. At 1280x800 I got 25 FPS on high graphics on Crysis. On games such as Flatout or X-Men origins: wolverine. I got well beyound 40 FPS on ultra high. And this is all while the computer is not hot comparatively to other Alienware gaming laptops.
I have to say my favorite features on this laptop are the multi-gesture touch pad, and the little led light on the screen for using the keyboard in darker enviroments. I have been using this computer as my school laptop and you would be amazed at how light it is. Now in comparison to an HP Pavillion G62, This computer kicks.
Overall I love this laptop and highly recommend it.

Sony VAIO VGN-AW310J/H 18.4-Inch Laptop - Gray

I purchased this computer 3 weeks ago and so far I have no major complaints! It's fast, I use it to game (world of warcraft) as well as photo editing. It zooms through these with ease!
The two things I would complain about are trivial and inherent in a laptop. One, the screen. It's very bright and not good for editing photos (even toned down it has issues). I had assumed as much and planned on getting an external monitor. The color is wonderful for gaming and other things however. If you plan on using it for photo editing you will want a different monitor. That said, it is a VERY nice LCD screen.
The other is the spots for usbs, external speakers, and the power supply input. I think those are more a matter of preference. I tend to hook mine up to multiple things and use a USB hub so it's not a huge deal.
Those are the only things I could even try to complain about, and IMO those are very, very trivial and subject to user preference. I bought 2 external hard drives for my photos.
The built in speakers sound pretty good for a laptop. If you leave it open a lot you might find that the metal grate/grill thing over the speakers likes dust. Not a big deal.
It is a HUGE laptop so I wouldn't recommend it if you are traveling a lot and want something light and portable.
Battery life is kind of weak but that's to be expected of such a large laptop, the screen is huge. I keep it plugged in most of the time. It lasts about 2.5 hours for me without the plug.

I've had the HP Elitebook 8440P laptop for just over a month now, and I absolutely love it. I used to use a 13" macbook, but got sick of not being able to customize the software to do exactly what I wanted (since I grew up as a PC user). I expect the HP Elitebook 8440p to last me at least 3-4 years. I've installed Windows 7 ultimate 64-bit on it so that I could run Adobe Premiere Pro CS5 for editing videos, and the laptop renders video fast and hasn't crashed yet.
I've replaced the standard 6 cell battery with a 9 cell battery, giving me 5-6 hours of battery life while browsing online and watching youtube videos. I noticed the battery life lasts even longer (up to 9 hours) if you turn off the wifi, and do something offline like word processing. When you put it to sleep, it doesn't drain the battery at all, yet it turns on right away again when you hit the power button.
The machine is designed excellent with a business/professional and sleek look with the stainless steel lid. It's also scratch resistant and finger-print resistant due to this material. It's quiet and stays very cool. This may also have something to due to 160gb Intel solid state drive that mine has.
The HP protection suite that comes with it has many great security options if that is an important issue to you. It can manage all your passwords for you.
The only bad thing I could say about it is about the speaker/mic volume. The volume won't get very loud even on the max settings. When you record your voice on microphone, it doesn't play back very loud. Still it's good enough to handle a skype call.

The 2.33 GHz Macbook Pros that have Intel Core 2 Duo processors will be able to run MAC OS 10.7 (Lion) when it comes out. These computers are not as fast as the new quad core Macbook Pro models, but they continue to hold up to heavy use. I suggest maxing out the RAM to 4 GB before installing 10.7 this summer. These computers can actually only use 3.3 GB of the 4, but having matched pairs makes the RAM more efficient in these models. 2 GB seems to be fine for 10.6, but 10.7 will be a more intensive OS. People who do a lot of intensive movie editing may also want the additional RAM. I use my 2 GB computer with iLife '11 & on the Internet with no problems, but I don't know about the larger editing software such as Final Cut Pro.

Apple Mac mini MC238LL/A Desktop Review

Apple Mac mini MC238LL/A Desktop
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I attached the mini to my HDTV (using mini-DVI to HDMI cable) and an optical digital audio cable. Picture and audio are perfect. It's great.
Let's start with the basics. It's whisper quite, and it uses about as much power as fluorescent light bulb when idle.
I can watch or listen to anything in iTunes using an IR remote (I use a "Logitech Harmony XBox 360" remote) via the built-in Apple Frontrow software or using Apple's magical Remote app for the iPhone (or iPod touch).
Or I can control the mini media center from my laptop across the room using Mac "Screen Sharing" (or VNC on any PC) to watch any video or audio source from the internet (Hulu, Silverlight, Flash, Amazon VOD, Netflix VOD etc.) or use the Apple DVD Player to play VIDEO_TS folders. (Please respect filmmakers and don't pirate movies.) You can watch what ever you want. You name it.
Although it's an option, it really doesn't even need a dedicated keyboard and mouse.
Other non-computer media boxes that are available can only play a fixed set of sources -- e.g. iTunes and YouTube (AppleTV). Netflix or Amazon VOD (Roku) or ripped or downloaded video files (WDTV). Support for anything outside of what those devices do today is just a wishing game or requires a lot of painstaking media format conversion.
The mini as a media center is pretty much obsolescence-proof. So while it may seem a lot more expensive than something like WDTV today, I'll bet I'll still be using the mini media center long after that WDTV has joined the pile at the back of the closet.

Upgraded with a faster 2.26 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor, Apple's innovative Mac mini desktop is a great choice for home computing tasks and creating a digital media hub. It fits everything that makes a Mac a Mac inside an elegant 2-inch-tall, 6.5-inch square--just add your own keyboard, mouse, and display. The Mac mini also includes excellent video processing power from the integrated NVIDIA GeForce 9400M graphics chip, an ultra-fast FireWire 800 port, and dual video outputs--a Mini DisplayPort and a Mini-DVI port.
Officially, Mac mini is a desktop computer. But because it can go places no other desktop can go, it's been used everywhere from boats to server rooms, as the heart of an entertainment center--and even to power robots. Small, elegant, and unassuming, it has a sleek, anodized aluminum case and clean, white surface.

Continuing Apple's commitment to the environment, the Mac mini exceeds current Energy Star 5.0 requirements by consuming less than 14 watts when idle 45 percent less power than the previous generation. It's also made from highly recyclable aluminum, uses PVC-free internal components and cables, contains no brominated flame retardants, and even features smaller packaging.

It comes pre-loaded with Apple's Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard operating system--an operating system custom-designed for the advanced technology inside--and it also comes with the iLife '09 suite of applications, including iPhoto, iMovie, Garageband, and iTunes.

Key Features
Intel Core 2 Duo Processor Experience improved energy efficiency and improved multitasking with the 2.26 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor, which also offers an ultra-fast 1066 MHz front-side bus (FSB) and a large 3 MB L2 cache. (An L2, or secondary, cache temporarily stores data; and a larger L2 cache can help speed up your system's performance. The FSB carries data between the CPU and RAM, and a faster front-side bus will deliver better overall performance.)

The hafnium-infused circuitry--which reduces electrical current leakage in transistors--conserves even more energy. With a substantial 3 MB of shared L2 cache, data and instructions can be kept close to the two processor cores, greatly increasing performance and allowing the entire system to work more efficiently. And, because the processor cores share the L2 cache, either can use the entire amount if the other happens to be idle.

Graphics Processor The Mac mini features the NVIDIA GeForce 9400M integrated graphics processor for up to five times better graphics performance than its predecessor, and its dual display support can drive two Apple or third-party displays with Mini DisplayPort or DVI connections. The NVIDIA GeForce 9400M shares 256 MB of DDR3 SDRAM with main memory. You'll notice the difference when you work with high-resolution photos and high-definition video, where graphics-intensive features in iPhoto and iMovie are smoother. And 3D game play--from Spore to Call of Duty--is faster and more responsive.

Wireless Connectivity The built-in 802.11n wireless networking provides up to five times the performance and twice the range of 802.11g, but it's also backward-compatible with 802.11a/b/g routers, enabling you to communicate with the a wide variety of Wi-Fi resources. It works seamlessly with the new AirPort Extreme with 802.11n. Use the built-in Bluetooth wireless technology to connect to your PDA or cell phone, synchronize addresses, or download pictures from your cell phone. You can also use a wireless headset for iChat audio chats and VoIP calls as well as quickly share files with a colleague.

Pre-Loaded with Mac OS X Snow Leopard and iLife '09Every Mac comes with Mac OS X Snow Leopard, the world's most advanced operating system, and iLife, Apple's innovative suite of applications for managing photos, making movies and creating and learning to play music. Snow Leopard builds on a decade of OS X innovation and success with hundreds of refinements, new core technologies and out of the box support for Microsoft Exchange. iLife features iPhoto, to easily organize and manage photos; iMovie with powerful easy-to-use new features such as Precision Editor, video stabilization and advanced drag and drop; and GarageBand which introduces a whole new way to help you learn to play piano and guitar.
Installed software

Mac OS X v10.6 Snow Leopard (includes Time Machine, Quick Look, Spaces, Spotlight, Dashboard, Mail, iChat, Safari, Address Book, QuickTime, iCal, DVD Player, Photo Booth, Front Row, Xcode Developer Tools)
iLife '09 (includes iPhoto, iMovie, GarageBand, iWeb, iDVD)

Environmentally Friendly DesignBecause Apple designs both hardware and software, we can reduce our environmental footprint in ways others can't. For starters, a highly efficient power supply reduces the amount of power wasted when bringing electricity from the wall to your Mac. Unlike a lot of PCs, a Mac uses energy-efficient hardware components that work hand in hand with the operating system to conserve power--even between keystrokes.
A Mac also doesn't contain a lot of toxic materials. All Mac displays are mercury and arsenic free, and the internal components are free of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and brominated flame retardants (BFRs).

Efficient Power Supply Mac mini includes a highly efficient power supply that reduces the amount of power wasted when bringing electricity from the wall to your computer. Lower power consumption reduces energy bills and lessens the environmental impact of greenhouse gas emissions from power plants.

Advanced Power Management Unlike a lot of Windows-based PC systems, Mac mini uses energy-efficient hardware components that work hand in hand with the operating system to conserve power. Mac OS X spins down hard drives and activates sleep mode. And it balances tasks across both central processors and graphics processors. Mac OS X never misses a power-saving opportunity, no matter how small. It even regulates the processor between keystrokes, reducing power between the letters you type. That's just one of many ways Apple manages small amounts of power that add up to big savings.

Mac mini is a great example of Apple's energy-efficient design philosophy. It uses less than 14 watts of power when idle--that's something no other desktop computer can do.2

ENERGY STAR Qualification Mac mini meets the stringent low power requirements set by the EPA, giving it ENERGY STAR qualification. ENERGY STAR 5.0 sets significantly higher efficiency limits for power supplies and aggressive limits for the computer's typical annual power consumption.

Apple Mac mini MC239LL/A Desktop

(More customer reviews)
[Update June 15, 2010: this version of the Mac Mini has been superceded by an even slicker looking, smaller, more powerful model. Unless you can get this model at a great closeout price, I would get the newer Mini. It looks great.]
First of all my credentials, I have been writing Mac software since 1992. I've had on my various desks a Mac Plus, Performa 605, PowerBook 100, several iBooks, PowerBook G4s, MacBook, PowerMacs 7600, 8100, G3, G4 and G5, a couple recent generation iMacs and a previous generation Mac Mini. I have seen Macs come and go, and I just love this little desktop. It is exactly what I need for compiling a large desktop application using Apple's development tools. What I need is a reasonably fast processor, Firewire, 4GB of RAM and multiple monitor support. I do not need a huge box filled with disks. I do not need some super fast GPU. I do not need PCI cards. If I did, then yeah, a Mac Pro would be sitting under my desk sucking up the Watts.
My company has also provided me with a monstrous, fully loaded, Dell whose case could hold upwards of 30 Mac Mini's. In the one processor intensive task I do--doing a full rebuild of a large C++ application--the Xenon processor and desktop hard drives in the Dell can complete the task in 6 minutes while the Core 2 Duo processor and laptop drives in the Mini can do the task in 13 minutes. If I were doing that task many times a day (as opposed to several times a week) then I would need to move up to a high end iMac or Mac Pro; but I don't and I can live with the more typical single change, compile, link time of 14 seconds on the Mini versus a very erratic 6 seconds on the Dell (for whatever reason Visual Studio on the PC will sometimes take over a minute to do this).
Why is this Mac Mini a better value then the MC238LL/A at the lower price? Because it adds more RAM, a larger hard drive, and a slightly faster CPU, and I don't have to pop it open to max it out. All three things together make it worth the extra dough. If you are just going to use it for a home theatre PC, as many people do, then added expense is probably not worth it and you should go with the lesser model.
Why would you choose this over a current generation iMac? The iMacs are great machines, and can be ordered as quite the powerhouses with i5 or i7 processors, and with desktop level graphics engines, but they might be overkill and in the long run it may not make sense to be ordering machines where you can't reuse the previous machine's monitor. If you have a monitor already, the Mini will be several hundred dollars cheaper. Also, if the monitor has multiple inputs, the Mini bought today can be retired as a home server in a couple years with the Mini of the future stacked upon it sharing the same monitor. While the newest iMacs can be used as an external Display Port monitor, its still a bit inflexible tying the computer to the display. Having said this, I like the iMac too, and if you need a monitor and have the room, it may be the way to go.
Why is this Mac Mini much better than previous Mac Minis? The Mini has had several value adding changes over the last couple years: going from PowerPC to Intel, adding multiple monitor support, adding FireWire 800 support, and getting a decent GPU in the NVidia 9400M. This is a real computer. Not some dinky Ion laptop. It can do computationally intensive things, like in my case compiling hundreds of thousands of lines of C++ code. And yet it is tiny, and quiet.
So, yeah, I like this box.
What about the nearly as compact Dell Inspiron Zino HD? Well presumably you would buy the Mini because it is a Mac. The Zino is certainly cheaper, and is a valid competitor if you were setting up a home theatre PC, and could use the slightly better video card and Blueray option. If I were buying a Mini just to run Windows Media Center, I'd certainly be open to getting a Zino. I don't see an overlap between the uses of this non-home theatre Mini and the more multimedia centric Zino. I think you will find the Mini better made and faster at processor intensive operations: and it's definitely smaller.
Anyway, installation could hardly be simpler. Pop it out of the box, plug in a keyboard and mouse. It comes with a mini-DVI to DVI adaptor which will connect to any modern monitor, and you can get a mini-Display Port adaptor separately to add multiple monitor support. Power it up and you will soon be computing. It's nice, fast and quiet. Plenty of USB ports (5). Add up whatever peripherals you need: speakers, external hard drives (look at getting drives with Firewire 800, they are much faster and reliable than USB 2.0).
My wife has an older Mac Mini which she runs Windows Vista in Boot Camp mode and has done so without problem for over a year. I would think this Mini would be even better as a Windows 7 box with the much improved graphics chips allowing for better use of the Aero interface.

Dell Inspiron Mini 10V Netbook Computer (Intel Atom N280 160GB/1GB) Review

Dell Inspiron Mini 10V Netbook Computer (Intel Atom N280 160GB/1GB)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Dell's Mini 10v is simply a breath of fresh air in an ever-cramping netbook market. Particularly, it's ingenuity make it the most-comfortable, most-useful netbook around.
===== It's Comfortable =====
Most netbooks are unusable to me, especially where the keyboard is concerned. Most netbooks' have either tiny keyboards, or their keyboards just aren't typing-friendly. I frequently work on laptops, so I'm used to the low-profile, "chiclet-style" scissor-switch keyboards that are (or at least used to be) most common in laptops, and in fact I love them.
I'm referring to the type of keys that are flat and flush with the palm rest, and have a little flange or lip on the edges (where the space is between the keys). Such a design makes them spill-resistant, but also makes typing a breeze, as they won't inflict wrist strain due to tall keys or keys that require more force to press. So, this thing is certainly a dream to use.
===== It's Innovative =====
The touch pad is small, yet clever, allowing you to press down on the bottom-left/bottom-right corners of the pad to left-click/right-click (respectively), rather than wasting space by implementing separate buttons. The touch pad is also very touchable, as its texture and finish is matte, rather than glossy, making it much more conducive to swiping your fingers across than most of the other netbooks I laid fingers on.
Most netbooks' touch pads were glossy, making your skin shear and resist the dragging gestures. I find such a feeling to be nearly as annoying as fingernails on a chalkboard! The other netbooks were also noticeably covered in oily smudges and finger grease, both inside the track pad and also on the wrist rest. Instant turn off for me on anything but the Dell! The Mini 10 on the other hand was smudge free, thanks to their use of an oil-resistant softly-textured palm-rest.
===== It's Brilliant =====
The display is crisp and bright, and it isn't too shabby outside either, though I recommend using full brightness when being used outdoors. My only complaint about the screen is its native resolution is a bit low for my tastes, which I hope isn't just a personal preference. I'd rather see more on the screen than to see things big and close up. However, this is par for netbooks anyway. You should look into this Sony (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001PII4HW?tag=a52-20&ie=UTF8) if you absolutely must have a higher definition display while maintaining the small form factor of a netbook.
===== It's Media Friendly =====
The built in HD media excellerator and the 9:16 ratio widescreen 10.1" display is great for watching hi-def movies on the go, with one very important exception: you must have an external DVD (or Blu-Ray) drive. I recommend this Samsung (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002C1BBU8?tag=a52-20&ie=UTF8) which sports a sexy look, on par with the Dell 's own appeal, without sacrificing functionality. Video playback is generally smooth and very few hiccups in playback have been experienced. The TV tuner featured in the similar model (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002EEP3J8?tag=a52-20&ie=UTF8) is really the only media-friendly feature really missing.
===== It's Capable =====
Great for writing and surfing the Web (after all, surfing was the original presmise of the netbook, hense the name). Just be sure to keep your browser tabs to a minimum and not install too many Firefox extensions, and you'll be fine. Media plays alright, including Web videos, Flash sites and Flash games. As long as you aren't trying to multi-task by running several other programs at once, you should be just fine. The memory card reader is an added bonus. I didn't think it would be all that useful, but it is a life-saver when traveling.
This machine features Windows XP, which runs okay. Windows 7 would be more ideal, as the OS is optimized for the netbook, and it even outperforms XP in several areas, so you can't go wrong in using it. While some of the other Mini 10's feature slightly better Atom processors (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00361G10S?tag=a52-20&ie=UTF8), the GMA-950 Intel graphics chip used here tends to make this model more conducive (less painful) for implementing OSX, but I'll leave it at that.
===== Processor and Battery =====
The Dell Mini 10v features the Intel Atom N280, a 64-bit-capable single-core processor supporting 2GB max ram. It supports Hyper Threading, so mild (but not wild) multi-tasking is possible, within reason. Try not to run more than two apps simultaneously for best performance and battery life. Intel Speedstep Technology is also built in, helping you save battery life. We averaged about 7-8 hours compared to the boasted 9.5 using the 60WHr 6 cell battery.
===== What I Loved =====
* Keyboard design - 92% full-size!
* Touch pad design - genius usability features
* Wrist rest - comfortable, remains clean/streak-free
* 3 USB ports - 2-left/1-right is dandy for using a USB mouse
* 9:16 ratio display - great for movies (see above for DVD solution)
* Keyboard + Touch pad design - seriously! It hits the mark spot-on!
===== Dissapointments =====
The things we would have liked to see were:
* 802.11n support - wave to the future already!
* 1024x600 resolution - would have preferred at least 1280x720
* 5400 RPM hard drive - would have liked a faster SSD (even if smaller)
* Windows XP - Win7 is more optimized for netbooks, XP isn't
* No TV tuner/HDMI hookups - this is becomming more standard
I hope you've found this review to be helpful! :)

Apple MacBook Pro MC024LL/A 17-Inch Laptop Review

Apple MacBook Pro MC024LL/A 17-Inch Laptop
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I finally made the decision to get rid of my two laptops (an HP envy, and a 13" macbook pro) in favor of this 17" macbook pro with a dual boot setup using Boot Camp. Initial impressions: The best choice I've ever made. Here's the whole thing broken down:
THE SIZE
This thing is pretty beastly, but it's not unwieldy. You definitely feel its size the second you pick one up, or move it around, but you'll quickly get over that once you open it up and turn it on. The keyboard is super expansive, the screen is unbelievable (more on that later) and you can still stay mobile with this thing if you really need to. It's not something you can easily move around with 1 hand from room to room, but if you're like me, and do most of your work at a desk, then this is a great choice to make. (Note: I also own an iPad, which is a fantastic pair with this thing, since it does about 90% of what I do on-the-go as far as mobile computing goes.)
THE SCREEN
So I mentioned already that you'll most likely fall in love with this thing like I did when you open it up and turn it on. It has the highest PPI (pixels per inch) of all the apple laptops they sell and it shows. I actually am considering not even hooking this up to my external monitor anymore, because of how brilliantly sharp it is. Colors really pop and text is easy to read. Also, since it's 17", you get a better-than-HD 1920x1200 resolution. My work is in development, so this is really a major selling point for me. I need to be able to manage all my windows in Xcode and Interface builder without tons of overlap and clicking between browsers, my chat windows and my code.
THE KEYBOARD
If you've used a macbook pro keyboard in the past year or so, you'll feel right at home with this thing. I will say this as a negative, however: It's not super comfortable on your arms right past your wrist, because the sharp edges of the laptop dig into your skin after a while.
THE PERFORMANCE
I copied over my entire OS/settings to this new macbook pro and ran some field tests to see how fast this thing is in comparison to my old macbook pro--and it screams. An iPhone/iPad project that takes 5-10 seconds to build on my old machine (core 2 duo) takes a fraction of that time here. The i5 is most definitely a step up from previous core 2 duos. I finally have a laptop I can stick Windows 7 on that is as good as a dedicated Windows machine can do. (Being able to have this 1 comp to run both environments is great!)
BATTERY LIFE
I will have to come back and update on battery life, but I can tell you that it's worlds better than my HP. That was similarly spec'ed and barely worked 2 hours on the go. This one so far is looking like 6 hours with wifi and full brightness. They have it rated at 8-9 hours, but I'm sure that's with brightness turned down and not full use the whole time. Truthfully, anything better than 2 hours with this kind of power is great for me.
TOUCHPAD
Again, if you've used a recent MacBook Pro, this is essentially identical. The biggest change here is that you can now use "inertial" scrolling, so that you can just flick your fingers to scroll long pages, and it will keep scrolling until it slows to a stop. This is very similar to the iPhone scrolling of long pages, or if you've used a Magic Mouse, it does the same thing.
Also, of note, is that of all the new copy cat glass track pads, I haven't used one that works as well as these. Even inside Windows, it performs real well and you feel productive with it. I've used other PC's with the no-button glass touchpad, and it makes me want to throw them across the room after a few minutes..
OTHER THOUGHTS/CONCERNS
While I'll keep this at 5 stars, this isn't necessarily a perfect computer. I have a few gripes with it, but they aren't really deal breakers and all the other pros make up for them so well that I'm okay with it. For starters, this has three USB ports (the 15 and 13 model only have 2) but unfortunately they are literally all lined up next to each other. If you have any kind of a fat usb device, you're out of luck for placing anything next to it.
Also, you'll most likely need to buy the mini-display port to HDMI converter because while Apple loves mini-display port, the rest of the world is just now using HDMI as its standard. You can find one here on amazon for real cheap (

Apple MacBook Pro 13-inch 2.66GHz Laptop Review

Apple MacBook Pro 13-inch 2.66GHz Laptop
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is an able computer, but the so called value additions that make this model $300 more expensive than the standard Macbook Pro 13 are hardly worth it. If you're thinking about buying this version of the 13 inch Macbook Pro, please consider taking a look at the standard Apple MacBook Pro MC374LL/A 13.3-Inch Laptop.
The only difference between this $1499 MBP 13 and the $1199 MBP 13 are processor speed and hard drive space - this MBP 13 has a 2.66ghz processor and 320 gb hard drive while the standard MBP 13 has a 2.4 ghz processor and 250 gb hard drive.
So you're paying $300 more (20% of the cost of the $1499 MBP 13 or 25% of the cost of the standard $1199 MBP 13) and getting only 70 gb more hard drive space and a processor faster by 266 mhz (Approximately 10%). Whether that's worth a $300 price difference over the standard MPB 13 is questionable.
Everything else is IDENTICAL in both MPB 13's - Superdrive, backlit keyboard, multi-touch trackpad, screen (1280 x 800 resolution Glossy LED backlit screen), iSight camera, Nvidia Geforce 320m integrated graphics, speakers, amount of ram (4gb - good for multitasking),number of ports(1 Firewire 800 port,2 USB 2.0 ports), SD Card slot, wireless capabilities (802.11n specification; 802.11a/b/g compatible, Bluetooth 2.1 and Gigabit Ethernet -10/100/1000). THE SAME EVERYTHING.
The software included is also the same - OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard and the iLife 09 suite of content creation tools. A 1 year warranty on parts and 90 day telephone technical support is also standard on both models
Let's consider a situation where you choose to buy the standard MBP 13 instead of this model. You'd save $300.
You could then put it towards purchasing a 500 gb hard drive (for approximately $80 on Amazon) and install it yourself. That's a bigger hard drive than the one included in this $1499 model. The installation instructions are included in the MBP 13 manual and it doesn't void the warranty. You'll need a Philips #00 screwdriver. Installation videos are also available online.
You'd also have $220 left with which,(if you decide to) you could buy Applecare or Squaretrade and protect your machine for 2 more years after the first year limited warranty runs out.
If you're interested in using your money optimally, do consider the standard Apple MacBook Pro MC374LL/A 13.3-Inch Laptop It's 99% identical in terms of hardware and capability in comparison to this $1499 MBP 13 and is in all aspects, a much better value for money buy.
Hope this helps!

Apple Mac Pro MC560LL/A Review

I just replaced my five-year-old Dual 2.7 GHz PowerMac G5 with the Apple 2.8GHz Quad-Core Intel Mac Pro and what an improvement! The new Mac is at least three times faster doing processing tasks (exporting a movie from QuickTime, for example) than the old unit, and it's SILENT. Photoshop is a lot speedier and so is Quark (although the lengthy delay in startup hasn't changed--dang you Quark!). I've pushed it hard (transferring files from the old Mac while exporting a movie from QT, listening to iTunes, and working in Photoshop) without hearing the fans speed up even once! I have three 1-TB drives installed in the enclosure with one bay free, plus six 2-TB external drives hooked up via a Kensington USB Hub and file transfers happen reliably and quickly.
Tasks such as installing hard disks can be tedious on less well designed computers, but not on the Mac Pro! Fit and finish are perfect and the hardware shows the usual attention to detail for which Apple is renowned. For instance, to install a new disk drive in one of the four drive bays: simply lift the locking lever on the rear of the case and take the cover off, thereby exposing the bays. Remove one, attach it to the new drive and tighten the four captive fasteners, then slide it back into the Mac Pro enclosure--elapsed time less than a minute! Installing RAM and PCI Express cards is equally simple.
I'm not much for gaming but I do like playing Unreal Tournament 2003 online. There's not a native Intel version of UT2003, so it runs using the Rosetta translator, but the ATI Radeon HD 5770 graphics processor and Nahalem processors handle the load with barely a hiccup--there is a slight reduction in frame rates (noticeable but not annoyingly so).
In retrospect, I'd have bumped the RAM up from 3 GB, but that's the closest I can come to a regret with this computer.
There's been some little controversy over the last year as to whether the Mac Pro is worth the price premium over iMacs because they've been closing the performance gap. For me it was no contest: I needed as much internal disk storage as I could get, plus the flexibility to add RAM and monitors as needed was a crucial factor. The iMac is a great computer, but I'm happy with my Mac Pro.
I highly recommend this machine!

Apple MacBook Pro MC725LL/A 17-Inch Laptop Review

I upgraded to this model (early 2011 Quad Core i7 17" MacBook Pro) from the first in Apple's series of "unibody" laptops (late 2008 Core 2 duo 15" MacBook Pro). Both have been excellent laptops and have remarkably similar features given the years between them. However, what makes the difference here is pure raw speed.
The i7 processor has four cores each running at 2.2Ghz and the ability to "hyperthread" to operate in a virtual eight core mode. Applications must be written in a specific way to take full advantage of the multiple cores, however the processor has another trick up its sleeve in such cases. If some of the cores are underutilized then the processing speed of the those in use are bumped up. This translates into blazing speed across the board.
Other improvements include automatic switching between the two included (and upgraded) video processors, one for high performance and the other for economic power consumption. A new "Thunderbolt" port is provided, which permits extremely high-speed data transmission to and from external devices (as soon as they become available with this new standard!). This is in addition to the more familiar set of ports, including gigabit ethernet, Firewire 800, USB2.0, digital audio in/out, analog audio in/out, magsafe power, etc.
While this laptop may not physically appear to be a new model, I feel this is an advantage unto itself. This being my second unibody mac, I can attest that Apple has a brilliant case design that needs no modification. One needs only to pick it up to immediately feel the solid build quality and ruggedness despite its thin and relatively lightweight specs. The body is carved from a solid block of aluminum, and save for the back plate there are no visible seams or screws. There is a world of difference between this and most other plastic laptops.
Unfortunately Apple has decided to saddlebag this wicked-fast tank with a relatively pokey 5400rpm hard drive, which ends up being a noticeable bottleneck in performance at startup and other disk-intensive times. I appreciate the capacity of the included 750GB drive, but swapping it out with my existing 500GB solid state hybrid drive provided an additional performance boost well worth the reduced storage space. Incidentally, changing just about any of the internal components appears to be relatively straight forward, as the back plate removes to expose all.
To conclude, this is one speedy machine who's only noticeable flaw is the included large but unimpressive hard drive. Swap it out for a faster drive (especially a SSD) and this is a laptop that cannot be topped.

I have been on a MacBook C2D 2.4 Ghz (with 6GB RAM) for the last 3 years and wanted to upgrade and the MB Air seemed to be the right way to go. Selling the iPad and the MacBook and getting the Air 13" w/ 4GB RAM and the 256GB SSD, to be precise. At the Apple store I realized the the MacBook Air (at this time) is really older technology in an amazing form factor, but I did not feel compelled to spend $1800 on pretty much the same CPU as I just had for 3 years already. Then the new MB Pro showed up, and after 72h with it I am super happy.
This MBPro with the new i7 2.7 Ghz CPU is about twice as fast as the 2008 MacBook I had. It scored 6800 points on Geekbench. Installing Office Mac 2011 and Adobe CS3 was super fast and I look forward to have VMWare Fusion running much better than on the older MacBook. I just watched the full iPad2 keynote (1h) over wireless on battery plus 1 hour of surfing, battery says 4h left, awesome! I already swapped the hard drive for a 320GB/7200 and in 6-12 month I might go SSD, but for now I stay with regular disks. There are some great 750GB /7200rpm drives now for about $100.
It's slick. I love the illuminated keyboard, finally on the smaller pro machine. The trackpad is awesome. The new LED screen is super crisp and bright. The new graphics HD 3000 chip is pretty good and enough for light Photoshop work. I can only recommend it. If you think MBP 13", go for the fastest CPU like this one (2.7 i7) and get all the rest of the upgrades later. Additional RAM is cheap these days and better HDD and soon the prices for the SSD will come down as well. Swapping the hard drive is easy and the same as will all the Pro models of the last 2 years or so. I can't wait to put like 500GB of SSD into this in 1-2 years and have it fly... Love this machine, best Mac ever (after PowerBook and 2 MacBooks).
