Fujifilm FinePix F30 6.3 MP Digital Camera with 3x Optical Zoom Review

Fujifilm FinePix F30 6.3 MP Digital Camera with 3x Optical Zoom

I've been a Canon guy for several years and throught that they lead the pack in photographic innovation. My family has several Canon SLR's, assorted lenses and digital Elph pocket cameras (SD 400, SD450 and SD550). Pocket cameras trade performance and features for small size and ease of use. In bright light without flash the Canon Elphs usually provide image quality which is ok for 8 x 10" photos if one is not too critical about sharpness, especially near the edges and corners. This resolution limit has more to due with the lackluster optics being used than with the number of megapixels. Basically, the tiny lenses are the limiting factor and not the sensor.
The Fuji F30 is about the same size and weight as the Canon SD550 (or SD700). I bought it based on the rave reviews it got in the high-ISO, low light category. So, when I tested it against my 7.1MP Canon SD550 I was greatly surprised by the vastly superior image quality of the 6.3MP Fuji at ALL ISO settings. The Fujicon lens used provides much sharper pictures than the Canon from edge to edge. Sure, the Canon will make ok 8 x 10's but those from the Fuji will be much sharper and crisper, especially away from the center where the Canon image gets softer. The difference is even more striking in lower light, such as indoors or outside when the sun is low or under heavy clouds. The Fuji provides much sharper AND lower noise images at ISO 800 than the Canon does at ISO 200. Essentially, the Fuji can use the same shutter speed (to freeze action and mitigate hand-shake) in one-fourth the light while still producing superior pictures!!! The Fuji could also provide a shutter speed four-times faster in the same light and give sharper pictures and less noisy pictures.
Another advantage of the Fuji F30 is the option to have full manual control over aperture, metering, etc, just like an SLR (no manual focus however). The LCD on the Fuji is also much brighter and clearer (many more pixels and less reflective) than the Canon. One more advantage is battery life. The Fuji battery is about twice as large as that used in the Canon SD550. It is rated at 580 shots while the Canon is rated at about 150 shots. There's not nearly as much need to buy and carry a spare battery for the Fuji.
OK, the Fuji does have a few disadvantages over the Canon. The worst of these to me is the use of tiny xD memory cards. Not only do you need to buy yet another type of card but large 1GB xD cards require much longer times (about 5-10 times as long) to transfer images to your computer through a card reader than do 1GB SD cards. The reason for this is that the small sized xD card require special hardware compression to allow 1GB to be stored. In reading the card the pictures have to be uncompressed into normal jpeg format. This slows down the transfer. The xD card compression seems to have no effect on how fast the camera can take pictures. The Fuji is at least as fast as the Canon in starting up and taking pictures.
Another lessor complaint IMO is the supplied Fuji battery charger. It charges the battery only while in the camera and has a cord to plug into the camera and another long cord to plug into the wall. In contrast, Canon provides a very tiny battery charger with folding outlet prongs. This packs easily and charges the battery directly with NO cords. Fuji could provide a similar charger but, instead, offers to sell you their version of the Canon cordless charger for an extra $60-90 as an accessory. You can also buy a non-Fuji version of the cordless charger for about $28, so it's not a big issue, but is an irritation. It is also worth noting that the Fuji has no peephole viewfinder. I rarely use this but some folks may think this an omission. On the other hand, the Fuji LCD is much brighter and less reflective than the Canon screen so it can actually be used in bright sunlight when the peephole would be the only option with the Canon.
In summary, aside from the issues of the xD card and supplied charger, the Fuji F30 represents a significant breakthrough in image quality, low-light performance and optional manual controls for small pocket cameras.

The Fujifilm FinePix F30 6.3MP Digital Camera is a revolution in point-and-shoot digital cameras for consumers. With full-resolution ISO equivalency speeds as high as 3200 -- a setting previously reserved for advanced consumer and professional digital camera models -- the F30 takes crystal clear photographs where other cameras would deliver blurry images. Higher light sensitivities allow this camera to shoot with faster shutter speeds, which lessens the likelihood of blurry pictures caused by ever-active children, fidgety pets, dim ambient light, or an unsteady camera hand.
Sized to slip into a pocket or purse, the F30 might be diminutive, but the extra-large 6.3 megapixel resolution is more than enough for high-quality standard 4x6-inch prints. However, if you'd like to make larger prints, or alter an image with photo editing software, the extra-resolution is a valuable asset. An extra-large, 2.5-inch (230,000 pixel) LCD monitor fills the back of the camera. With convenient features like Auto Brightness and an anti-glare, low reflection CV (Clear View) film, the monitor provides comfortable composition and viewing of photos whether in dim interiors or under bright sunlight. The responsive FinePix F30 is ready when you are, with a super-fast start-up time (1.4 seconds), a shooting interval of 1.5 seconds, and a shutter release time lag of a minimum of 0.01 seconds.
The class-leading performance of FinePix F30 is due in large part to the second generation of Real Photo Technology. This Fujifilm photographic achievement is a combination of Fujifilm's Super CCD sensor, its proprietary RP Processor, and a world-class lens from Fujinon. The camera's 3.0x optical zoom lens has a focal range equivalent to 36-108mm on a 35mm camera. Combined with a 6.2x digital zoom, this camera offers a 18.6x total zoom range that brings you closer to your subjects than ever before. Fujinon, Fujifilm sister company, produces these high-quality optics that are used by broadcasters, astronomers, scientists, the military and others to bring their subjects closer with crisp, clear image quality.
Fujifilm has also added a helpful "Picture Stabilization" mode dial setting to the F30. This easy-to-identify, automatic setting lets the camera choose the correct light sensitivity -- ISO equivalents up to 3200 -- and best matching shutter speed for the highest quality digital pictures.
In the past, high ISO equivalencies such as 3200 (or even 1600 and 800), had been off-limits to compact consumer digital cameras, but not any more. In addition to Picture Stabilization, the F30 combats the high-ISO, low-picture-clarity problem with the sixth-generation Super CCD sensor that produces less noise than its predecessor, and an RP Processor II that is finely tuned to remove even more noise. The end result is the FinePix F30: a camera that produces sharp pictures, full of rich color with dramatically less image noise, even in the lowest of lights.
Another innovation of the FinePix F30 that works in tandem with Real Photo Technology and higher ISOs is the Fujifilm flash system called i-Flash. More advanced than similar flash systems, the i-Flash can accurately detect the subtle lighting differences within a scene, and then light the subject accordingly with a wider range of flash intensities. This is accomplished with an adjustment to the flash's intensity based on a variety of factors, such as subject position in the frame, subject size, ambient light, and backlight intensity. So, even if the subject is off center and standing under a street light, the i-Flash system will expose the subject properly.
i-Flash is a tremendous asset to any photographer, particularly when shooting in low-light -- subjects look more natural in front of backgrounds full of bright and clear detail. However, the i-Flash difference is most apparent in portraits, delivering realistic facial tones without the washed-out look so often associated with flash photography. Basically, this smart flash control system recognizes conditions, and determines the optimum flash output to give you superb results.
Ever run out of digital storage just at the wrong moment? Not with the F30. With 10 MB of built-in storage you'll never have to miss that special shot. Think of it as your internal insurance policy for those great, not-to-be missed photo opportunities. Amazingly easy to operate, all you have to do is switch-on the FinePix F30, and you'll be ready to shoot. Controls have been arranged for easy, fingertip operation giving you quick access to all the camera's great exposure modes and scenes. The full range of exposure modes includes auto, aperture-priority AE, shutter priority AE, manual, movie, picture stabilization, and scene position modes; plus, a generous selection of 15 preset scene positions that include underwater, sunset, snow, fireworks, party, museum and more. Whatever the situation, the FinePix F30 makes it a snap to get great results.
Additional features include super macro mode; 30 fps movie recording with monaural sound for capturing quick, digital video snippits; a FinePix Photo button for one-touch access to frequently used settings (image size, ISO sensitivity, and FinePix color mode); continuous shooting mode; a USB interface for PC connectivity; a video output for your TV monitor (NTSC/PAL) to display photographs on your television; FinePix Viewer software; PictBridge compatibility; and an xD-Picture card compatible slot. The FinePix F30 is powered by an included NP-95 rechargeable battery and can take approximately 500 pictures on a single battery charge.
What's in the Box Fujifilm FinePix F30 digital camera, NP-95 rechargeable battery, AC-5VC AC power adapter, hand strap, USB cable, A/V cable, and FinePix Viewer CD-ROM.

I bought the HF10 from Amazon and love it; its amazing. The HF20 is the next generation of that camera line and it produces .MTS file format (AVCHD) high-definition files. I just want to warn all perspective buyers that what they state in the Pixela software manual about the minimum requirements in order to actually be able to watch/ edit the highest-res video that comes off this camera are true and cannot be ignored: I have a Pentium 4 @ 3.6Ghz and 2 GB RAM and a PCIx video card and it is not good enough to play the video back smoothly (using Pixela software player) wihtout dropping frames ! The amount of system or video RAM is not the key; you MUST have either a fast Pentium "D" class or a Pentium Core 2 Duo (at least) processor (with matching motherboard w/ Intel chipset) or you can't really play/edit the highest res of video that comes out of this camera! (Note that my PC can archive the video to hard drive, DVD etc , just not smoothly playback and edit). Playback and editing may be possible on a lesser system but the performace will leave you unhappy most likely. Hope this helps with your search.

Came from overseas to the US and my laptop battery died. The laptop was only one year old however I was unable to get a replacement in any shop in Houston including the SonyStyle shop. Returned to my hotel and ordered it at amazon.com and had 2 days later in my room. And it was 20% cheaper than in Europe. So in case you travel to the US and stay there more than 4 days and you need an electronic spare or replacement, compare the prices and buy it there.

Being a computer technician for the last 15 years, I am very picky when it comes to buying computers, especially laptops and even more special, laptops with Celeron CPUs. This is my very first Celeron laptop and I have to tell you that I am surprised and amazed at the performance of this particular Celeron. Todays Celeron CPUs are NOT the Celeron CPUs of 10 years ago. These new Celeron 900 are based on Core 2 Duo CPUs. They are exactly the same except for 2 things: They have 25% less Cache than their Core 2 Duo counterpart and they are single core, but that doesn't mean it's slow by any means. This laptop came with 2GB of RAM (I upgraded it to the full 4GB), a 15.6" HD LCD Screen, a 250GB Hard Drive running at 7200 RPM - yes you are reading right - 7200 RPM! - Most laptops out there have a 5400 RPM HD, including the more expensive models, so this is a real bonus. It comes with B, G, and N Wireless, Intel 4500 Graphics, 2 USB Ports and a DVD Writer.
The performance of this laptop is quite good. Very fast booting up. Windows open smoothly. Tasks are handled quite well, even with 2GB of RAM. The 4GB of RAM makes things even better. The Celeron 900 2.2 GHz CPU inside packs quite a punch. Take a look at this benchmark:
[...]
It is by no means a weak processor. Overall this is a great laptop for $329.00 (BestBuy). Much better than a Netbook for sure (since that is what I was going to buy in the first place). Netbooks have no CD or DVD units, only 1GB of RAM, Slow Atom CPUs and 8 to 10 inch screens and cost over $350.00 (a good one). This laptop simply beats the netbooks in price, power and features. You will not be able to do serious video editing or play online games like Unreal Tournament 3, Crysis or things like that because of the limited video card, but hey let's get real, who uses a laptop to play games anyways? That's what desktops are for. If you are going to be mobile (traveling), going to school or simply work at the office then this is the perfect machine for you. If you are into web surfing, email and Microsoft Office and on a budget then look no further. For the price, you are getting a quality built machine with everything you need to do. All that and a little more. The components inside (motherboard and chipset) are all made by Intel.
I highly recommend it.

I bought this laptop from best buy in early September of 2010. I would have given it 4 stars, but after only a month of use it quit working. I think the graphics card may have overheated. The system lights would come on but nothing showed up on the screen. Also it happened overnight when the laptop was on, but not in use.
Luckily hp fixed it free of charge and it is working great now. The ram, hd space, and processor are all really great and pretty fast for the price of this laptop. My only complaint is that the graphics card only has 128 mb of dedicated memory which is not great. Luckily the proccessor makes up for it and i can still play most new games on low settings. Older games work fine.
Also the track pad is a pain and not comfortable to use. you just have to push down a little bit to hard to click. Fingerprint scanner works great, and also the HDMI output is great to watch high def movies on a tv.
Overall its a good buy but if youre into gaming or other graphic applications get a laptop with less hd space, a slower processor, but a better graphics card.

HP Pavilion dv6-3030us 15.6-Inch Laptop Review

HP Pavilion dv6-3030us 15.6-Inch Laptop
Average Reviews:

Be careful when ordering/receiving this product from Amazon. I recently ordered a "new" HP dv6 3030us from Amazon.com, not some third party distributor. Let's just say it was not "new" when it arrived at my door. While all the correct plastic protector guards/shields were on the laptop, there were marks that it had been used before, and I am not talking about finger prints.
The top/screen portion of the laptop actually had spacing between two pieces of plastic, i.e. someone had used/abused this laptop and it was re-packaged and sent to me. There were also scratch marks and abrasions on the actual keypad portion. All of these indications make me believe that this laptop hadd been operated by someone else prior to my taking ownership. Overall I am very disappointed with this purchase and considering asking for my money back via product return.
I would recommend ordering the computer directly from HP's webiste. Alas, I needed mine pronto and the quickest HP could deliver was 12-18 days, or I would have done the same.
I will keep you up to date on any issues/problems if I do try to return the laptop.

Canon BG-E6 Battery Grip for Canon 5D Mark II Digital SLR (Retail Package) Review

Canon BG-E6 Battery Grip for Canon 5D Mark II Digital SLR (Retail Package)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I purchased this grip while my Canon EOS 5D Mark II was still on preorder. In fact, it arrived a week before the camera did. I did this because I fell in love with the feel of a vertical grip a long time ago, and every camera I've had since then has had one added almost immediately (including: EOS Elan IIe, D-Rebel 300D, 30D, and 40D).
The grip is a real benefit to those like me that have big hands, since all of your fingers can now rest against the camera instead of curling up underneath. It's also a great counterweight when shooting with heavy lenses such as the EF 70-200mm f/2.8L. The arrangement of the vertical shutter release and related buttons on the side makes for very comfortable vertical shooting.
The grip duplicates the shutter button on the lower right corner of the camera, as well as the series of buttons (AF-ON, EL/FEL, and focus point select) that are normally under your right thumb on the camera body. So when you are shooting vertically, all of these buttons are in the standard location and you can shoot as you would horizontally, without having to reach your hand across your forehead to shoot. The grip also has an on/off switch that defeats these buttons when they're not needed, so they aren't accidentally pressed.
The grip accepts one or two LP-E6 batteries, and includes a tray for emergency use that can be loaded with 6 AA batteries. While you can get a couple hundred shots off with the AA's, that number drops off quickly with a lot of LCD use, and there's no point in even TRYING to use the AA's to shoot video. I carry the tray in my bag in the VERY unlikely event that I manage to drain both of my LP-E6's. You can find AA's anywhere in a pinch.
With the two LP-E6's installed, the 5D Mark II will register both of the batteries and list their statistics simultaneously in the Battery Info screen. The Shutter Count numbers even operate independently. For example, after a long day of shooting (over 1500 frames), the Battery Info screen told me that Battery 1 was responsible for 806 frames, while Battery 2 was responsible for 746 frames. At this point, the batteries still showed a 78% charge on each one.
------------
[Edit 01/08/2009] I have a shoot tonight that I need to be safe for, so I'll be charging both of my batteries before I leave. But I wanted to update my battery info for those that are interested in how long two batteries will last: Battery 1: Shutter Count 1400, 60% charge remaining. Battery 2: Shutter Count 1318, 61% remaining.
------------
Grips for lower-end and earlier cameras (such as the grip for my D-Rebel 300D, etc) were made entirely of plastic and had too much flex when attached to the body -- it almost felt like you could break it right off. That is NOT the case with this grip. It feels as solidly built as the camera itself, and there is absolutely zero flex. It is also weather sealed around the buttons, battery compartment and dummy stalk, so you won't need to worry about it being the weak point in your camera's weather sealing.
The bottom of the grip has a fluted rubber base to reduce slippage and a sturdy tripod socket. It also has a strap mount for use with Canon's hand strap (you use the one on the grip, and the right strap mount by the shutter to install the hand strap).
Finally, as is the case with the BG-E2(N) (but not earlier models), there is a spot for you to store the camera's original battery door since it won't be in use while you have the grip attached.
If you have small hands or often worry about camera weight, you may want to try this out in a local camera shop before committing to the (admittedly expensive) purchase. The weight of the grip plus an extra battery is not negligible, and for those with small hands, it may just make the camera unwieldy. Otherwise, you'll want this. Definitely.

CyberPower PP1100SW Smart App Sinewave UPS - 1100VA/700W AVR 7-Out Tower SNMP/HTTP Review

CyberPower PP1100SW Smart App Sinewave UPS - 1100VA/700W AVR 7-Out Tower SNMP/HTTP

I have used APC UPS backups exclusively. I was surprised like many people when one of my powerful APC backups would not run my Dell Studio XPS 9000 computer. When I called Dell about the problem, they were surprised and couldn't really help. When I talked to APC support, they knew all about the problem. They said I needed a backup that would produce a real sine wave because of the requirements of the power supply that was included with the Dell computer.
The APC person told me what APC unit would solve my issue. However, the unit was pretty expensive, and from reading the reviews, the unit was super noisy all of the time. I ended up ordering the CyberPower PP1100SW because it was cheaper. This unit actually works and is quiet. While the unit has a fan, the fan only turns on when there is a power loss. Under normal use, the unit makes no noise. If there is a quick brown out, my Dell keeps running and the unit stays quiet. If there is a power loss, after a few moments, only then does the fan turn on. This is all fine since the goal at that point is to run the machine long enough to get everything shut down properly.
If you are worried about noise and price, this is the unit to get! APC needs to get their act together and make their units quiet and reduce the price.

Tivoli Audio Model Two AM / FM Radio, Black/Silver Finish Review

Tivoli Audio Model Two AM / FM Radio, Black/Silver Finish

Lets be frank, the BOSE system is definitely an overpriced product. It is OK product that performs so so... it is also $500. If you really would like a system that sounds 100 times better and costs slightly less, I would look into the Tivoli Model 2 with the Tivoli subwoofer addition. I have tried both, and was only satisfied when I got my Tivoli Model Two. The Tivoli Model Two is definitely going to be classic and a system people talk about for years... mark my words. It was designed by Henry Kloss, one of the most important sound engineers of our time. I have the newest ipod dock with remote hooked up to it and it sounds amazing! Keep in mind that this is a system for people who like to LISTEN to music. True Hi-Fi... not another boomy window shaker system. The Tivoli system has incredible sound separation a really impressive sound stage. Oh and did I mention that it is really cool looking? It has real wood cabinets, minimal solid design+ it does not have the look of a bedside alarm clock!
Hopefully I have just saved some of you true music connoisseurs the headache of having to return their BOSE products... or not. Yours faithfully, Sonic Boom.

The Tivoli Henry Kloss Model Two Radio with companion speaker, the Tivoli Model Subwoofer and the Tivoli Model CD are designed to be used together as part of a complete compact stereo system but are sold separately from each other.
All the elements of the component system have classic styling that makes Tivoli products so distinctive. Simplicity and elegance are engineered into all three components and, for the most part, we came away impressed with what this little system could do in terms of sound quality, as well as its ease of use. It's worth noting here that all three components sport separate ports for AC and DC power, making them a great choice for boating or RV use.
Henry Kloss Model Two The Model Two serves as the base unit for the Tivoli component system. It is very similar to the Model Three clock radio, without the alarm clock section. Like other Tivoli radios, the Model Two is just over 8 inches wide, 4.5 inches high, and 5.25 inches deep--about the size of a toaster turned on its side. The unit also ships with a companion speaker which, unlike the monaural Henry Kloss Model One, gives the system full stereo separation.
The Model Two has a single rotary dial that handles tuning for both AM and FM stations. The dial is designed to move between stations at a speed that's a bit slower than the speed at which the user turns the knob--a five-to-one ratio, to be exact. This ratio dialing technique makes it far easier to tune stations accurately and quickly. It's a nice touch that sets the unit apart from other desktop radios. The tuner band selection and volume dials are easy to control, and they're well designed for hands of all sizes. A small LED power indicator, as well as an LED that helps determine signal strength, are positioned between the dials. We did have one gripe about the Model Two controls, though--the same gripe we had about the Model Three. Unlike the high-contrast labeling we found on the Platinum Series Model One radio, the Model Two's blue-gray lettering atop a taupe background is difficult to read, especially in low-light situations.
The Model Two's 3-inch driver is housed next to the tuning dial and is protected by a handsome metal speaker cover. The companion speaker contains the same driver in a form factor that is the same size and construction as the Model Two's main unit. A 15-foot RCA speaker cord attached to the companion speaker allows you to set the speakers well apart in a room--great for getting optimal stereo separation. There's a small balance dial on the rear of the main unit as well as a mono-stereo switch.
A coaxial antenna jack for the included FM antenna wire is provided, although the Model Two also has an internal FM antenna. Tivoli recommends using the supplied external antenna for tricky tuning in locales with a lot of closely spaced stations. There's a handy switch for alternating between the internal and external antennae, as well. A standard 3.5-millimeter headphone jack is also provided, as is a 3.5-millimeter auxiliary line-in port for plugging in the Model CD. For the really techno-savvy, there's also a 3.5-millimeter mixing input that permits audio from your computer to be mixed in with the radio. A preamp-out jack is provided for the Model Subwoofer, and if you want to use the Model Two as a component tuner--not a bad idea given the overall quality and accuracy of the tuning circuitry--Tivoli has provided a 3.5-millimeter output port.
Model Subwoofer At 6.5 inches high, 9.5 inches wide, and 6.1 inches deep, the Model Subwoofer is a bit larger than the other components in the Tivoli component system. While a 5.25-inch bass driver dominates the front of the unit, there's also a deep front port for added bass response. A bass-level dial lets you decide how much of the low end you want to hear. The on-off switch has a sensor that automatically activates the subwoofer when a signal is detected. With 20 watts of power, the Model Subwoofer is an impressive little box with the capability of dramatically extending the fullness and richness of the Model Two sound.
Model CD With its cherry wood casing, Tivoli's component CD player matches the Model Two perfectly while offering equally simple operation. We really liked the elegant slot-loading mechanism; it felt solid and reliable. Basic functions like play, stop, and track selection can be controlled on the unit. There's also a tiny little remote that adds shuffle, direct track selection, repeat, and intro-scanning functions. True to form, the remote is simple and easy to use. The Model CD's display is bright and crisp with the look of a high-end audiophile-class component. We played a number of CDs, including CD-R discs with nary a hitch. Tivoli says that the Model CD will not play CD-RW discs, however.
A 3.5-millimeter headset jack is provided on the back of the unit, as are RCA outputs and an AC power port that connects to a supplied brick-style AC adapter. The unit is also capable of running on DC power.
All Together Now Setting up the component system was fairly straightforward. All of the inputs and outputs are clearly marked, and each component ships with everything you need to make the right connections. Although it might be too much to ask for, it would be great if the Model Two main unit had an AC power input for plugging in at least one of the components. This is admittedly a minor quibble, and it might not be feasible in such a small device.
Just like our experiences with other Tivoli products, sound was impressive--full of clear highs and mids and rich, room-filling lows. The Model Two tuning feature felt less accurate than the Model One, but we still were able to dial in stations quickly and easily. Overall, we recommend the Model Two as a high-quality mini-component system, because systems this size rarely sound this good. Even without the subwoofer engaged, the sound was rich and resonant. As soon as we plugged in the subwoofer, though, we were transported to near sonic bliss. It's a must-have accessory for the Model Two.--Joshua Gunn
Pros
Simple, stylish construction on all the component parts
Great sound from such a compact system; good tuning accuracy
Subwoofer option adds exceptional dynamic range
Cons
Tuner is slightly less accurate than the Model One

I have had my Dell mini 10v for 3 weeks now. I have downloaded the necessary programs off the internet, open office and Firefox, and loaded my music and pictures using my external hard drive, so I have not needed an external DVD drive. I am very happy with the keyboard (it is much nicer than the Acer I tried). It is an adequate size and I quickly became accustomed to using it. All of the buttons are in the right places and I am able to type almost as well as I can on my 15 inch laptop. The touch-pad is different than most of the netbooks out there but that is part of what attracted me to the Dell. I read many reviews that questioned the touch-pad but when I tried all the different brands(Acer, HP, Asus) in person I found that it was one of the biggest and that I didn't mind the integrated buttons and liked it better than the hp option of putting the buttons on the sides. Sometimes it does think I am trying to scroll when I click but I very rarely want to scroll so I will likely turn the scroll function off. So far the battery life of the 6 cell battery has been adequate. When running on battery with the screen turned all the way down I am getting about 6.5 hours which is less than advertised but is more than enough for me. I also like the power adapter. It is one piece and is able to plug into a surge protector and only takes up one spot which is nice. The only real negative right now is that it gets hot, hotter than my laptop and that upgrading the ram is not a task that I will be able to do on my own because I do not feel comfortable taking apart the entire computer and there is no access panel. Windows 7 starter is working well so far and I am planning on upgrading eventually. Overall I would purchase this netbook again but I do recommend that you go to a few stores and try all of the brands to determine if the keyboard and touch-pad are right for you.

I own many APC UPSes, from the relatively high end (i.e., like this one) to the relatively 'normal' levels. All seem incredibly well built. Before buying a UPS understand why APC has these various offerings, and try to understand which you might need. I wouldn't want my more critical servers ideally on anything below the Smart UPS series (they tend to have a pure sine wave output, along with a much more tightly regulated output). The Backup Pro series is a minor step down from the Smart UPS, in that it sacrifices pure sine wave output. The Backup series (non-pro) still has a very nicely regulated output, but is not quite as tightly controlled as the Pro series (nor of course does it have pure sine wave output).
APC sells serious stuff, at all levels, for very real reasons.

ASUS U31JG-XA1 13.3-Inch Laptop - Black

Have only had this laptop for a week but it is awesome. Love the ability to switch between NVidia performance GPU when I have it plugged in and then be able to switch to the 2D Intel mode on battery. The second day I had this laptop I used it for a full 10hours for classes and homework before needing to charge it, and it was still only at 15%. I loved being able to the first weekend throw it into performance mode and play games in high quality graphics mode.
I came from previously owning a 15.6" HP dv6700z laptop. This is a huge improvement at a mid-line price. I love the way the LED screen just pops color at my compared to the old screen. I am now able to go to classes and use my laptop without hunting for plugs and the size is perfect for a mobile laptop that still feels big enough that you aren't leaning in to look at the screen.
I find that the dual core i3 with hyperthreading is perfect even when it is under-clocked on the battery mode.
No gripes yet but will update as my experience with the product grows.

Acer Aspire TimelineX AS1830T-6651 11.6-Inch Laptop (Black)
Average Reviews:

I never dreamed that I would ever purchase an Acer computer. I always thought of them as being low end budget computers. Boy was I wrong! The Acer Aspire Timelinex AS1830T-6651 is the perfect little powerhouse. I wasn't satisfied with the idea of purchasing a Netbook of any flavor. I wanted a full computer. I wanted decent battery life, large hard drive, lots of RAM and a decent speed processor. I did my research (I've been a computer tech for 28 years)--lots of research. This was not an impulse buy. I looked at every ultra portable on the market. Every other laptop with similar specs was twice the price. None had the battery life. It doesn't have a gamer's graphics card, but I'm not a heavy gamer and knew that going into it, but playing back a movie was perfect. I read one review that said the speakers weren't very loud and didn't work very well on an airplane. Excuse me? Who would listen to music or watch a movie on a plane with the speaker? That is what headphones are for. I found the volume was on the low side, but adequate for my uses. If I know I will need more, I'll pick up some little speakers.
Pros: Size, price, keyboard size, expandability, RAM and hard drive size, upgradeable RAM and hard drive, light weight, great battery life, features.
Cons: Slow hard drive (5400rpm - adequate, but faster would have been nice)
I highly recommend this laptop for anyone wanting the portability of a netbook but with the power of an upper mid-range laptop.

I just received this nice 15.6" notebook and I admit that I like it! The sound is great. The keypad is really handy when you need it. And the reponse of this computer is satisfying with windows 7 loaded.
However, pictures in its product page might be a deceiving. Although they are shown in the pics, this model does NOT come with a webcam and HDMI. I was surprised when I opened the box and found this truth. Hence, I further digged into the specification sheet and found that I was wrong. Beware, if you think this is really a steal with a webcam and HDMI for this low price, you may just make a mistake like what I did.
In all, I do not regret my decision of buying it at all. You can buy a netbook for $299.99. But I will pay a little bit more to go with this notebook ($379.99) with full capability, faster processing speed and a DVD burner in trade of the mobility. Now, I am going return my cute but slow netbook...

I just received this laptop yesterday and have begun putting it through its paces. I'll update the review in the future but as there are no reviews yet I wanted to get it started in case there are others that are considering this model.
I'd consider myself a moderate user. General office programs (word and powerpoint for classwork), internet browsing w/HD video streaming, netflix streaming, some photo editing, music, etc. I wanted something thin and light that also offered more oomph than a mobile ulv processor. The i3 in this laptop just screams compared to an AMD Neo 1.5ghz powered Toshiba that I tried out before settling on this model. Battery life after the initial break-in charge and drain and refill has been outstanding. I have 5:31 remaing with 89% battery while I type this. Mind you I've been using it since 100% for about an hour installing 180mb's worth of Windows updates and a reboot. I have it on balanced mode with the screen brightness set to 80%. Wifi on and Word running in the background while researching and typing should yield over 7 hours with the settings I have. To me that's impressive and the Timeline series is living up to its claim. HD video plays well, despite not having a dedicated graphics card. I think that's why you'll find the price on this model to be a little lower than other comparable Acer and ASUS models. I debated between this model and an ASUS that was near the same price point. However the ASUS models near this price point had an ULV processor, so the Acer won out. Build quality is solid, no flex in the keyboard. The screen is bright and vivid. So far I'm quite happy with the choice. As I said to open, I'll update this later.UPDATE:
Now that I've spent some time with the keyboard and track pad I find both to be easy to use. The mutli-gesture track pad works well and the swirls gesture makes scrolling down long web pages or easy. It's great if you're a tumblr user and want to scroll down your dashboard. The keyboard has great tactile feedback and the reaches are a little short but I found it quite easy to adjust coming from and excellent Fujitsu keyboard. I left the battery setting where I had previously mentioned and have had no trouble hitting 7 usable hours of battery life with wifi some HD streaming and light word usage. Still a 5 star product and the price point is great.
Pro's
-Build quality
-battery life
-keyboard
-display
Con's
-426 GB of usable HD space, 463 of actual space with OS loaded and the bloatware. I've been around long enough to know that HD space is never as it's listed, but Acer, where did my 37 GB's go?!?
Windows experience index....
Processor - 6.7
Memory - 5.9
Graphics - 4.5
Gaming Graphics - 5.2

Toshiba Satellite C655D-S5134 15.6-Inch Laptop (Black) Review

Toshiba Satellite C655D-S5134 15.6-Inch Laptop (Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
We tested a variety of Toshiba Satellites - and it's very confusing, because there are so many model numbers that are so similar.
We highly recommend the Toshiba Satellite, just not this model (C655-S5134). The problem is, it's using one of the SLOWEST processors on the market today. It's roughly 10-year-old technology.
To make matters even more confusing, after testing a dozen different Toshibas, we actually bought another Satellite C655 model (the C655-S5048) for the same price. It's almost identical in every respect, except the processor on our model (AMD P320) has a clock speed of 1,261. The clock speed on the C655-S5143 has a clock speed of (get this)... 350! That's nearly 1/4th the speed!
This was all very confusing to us, but here's the "short cut" - when you're shopping around for laptops, write down the name of the processor, and look it up at: CPUbenchmark-net
You will see some ridiculous inconsistencies, and you will be an informed consumer. Just poke around on Amazon for a few minutes - you will find plenty of Toshiba laptops for under $400, with processor speeds over 800-1,000 (which should be considered the bare minimum).
Don't think for a second that a faster processor will cost more. We also reviewed some of the more expensive Satellites ($599-$699) and found slow processors in that price class as well! And this is consistent with pretty much all computer manufacturers - the problem is that Intel, AMD, etc., invest a lot of money in marketing, and consumers demand chips they don't know anything about. But you can be a more informed consumer, and feel really good about your purchase.
Here are some general comments about the C655-series Toshiba Satellites:
PRO:
-Keyboard is an excellent size, and numeric keypad on the side is excellent for us. We use it all the time.
-Screen is fantastic - love it, no complaints. (I would not recommend the Toshiba models with the Trubrite screen - models with the TruBrite cost a minimum of $100 more & it picks up lots of glare/reflections.)
-Stays very cool (even when playing videos), and the fan rarely kicks on.
-It's light weight & durable. My 12-month old will pound on the keys occasionally, and it holds up just fine.
-Comes with built-in antivirus software. I recommend also installing Avira, and every computer/laptop you own should be running Hostsman.
-The battery isn't shabby, although this model has a slightly cheaper battery than the one I bought. The battery on the C655-S5048 lasts at least an hour longer.CON:
-No built-in camera or mic.
-Sound is not great. Most people assume it's cheap speakers, but it's not. Speakers are fine - but the sound driver itself is the problem for some reason. You can uninstall the driver & have Windows install a generic driver that will boost your sound levels by 50% (easier said than done in Windows 7).
-We have some general complaints against Windows 7, not Toshiba's fault (a discussion for another day). The biggest problem is, with the 64-bit version of Windows 7, we could not port any of our software from our previous Satellite to our new one.
Bottom Line: (1) Don't buy this model - it's a very nice laptop, but the speed is too slow. (2) You don't have to be a techie to be an informed consumer. It only takes 5 seconds to look up the speed on the site provided above (again, 800-1,000 should be considered the absolute minimum). (3) Unless you need a super-computer for specialized programming, you should be able to find a Toshiba Satellite with a great processor & all the amenities you need for under $400, right here on Amazon.
Please don't get frustrated in your search - I give this laptop 5-stars except for the speed. This is a good brand (Satellite) and a good price (under $400). But there are at least 5 other models that are 3-4x faster for the same price. If you're looking at this product, reading this review, you are definitely on the right track. Hope this helps, and enjoy your new laptop!
