M-Audio AXIOM 49 Advanced 49-Key Semi-Weighted USB MIDI Controller Review

M-Audio AXIOM 49 Advanced 49-Key Semi-Weighted USB MIDI Controller
Average Reviews:

First things first, I'm no pianist. I purchased this controller to work with DAWs and soft synths. So far I'm really pleased with the purchase. The faders feel a bit dry but function nicely. The rotary encoders support absolute and relative CCs, keeping parameters from jumping when changing presets. The keyboard keys feel solid and aren't springy like the Keystation line. The blue display is informational and easy to read in light and dark environments. It's also nice the keyboard is powered off the USB bus. No need for a wall-wart adapter.
The reasons I'm giving it a 4 out of 5 instead of a 5 are the following:
1. the keyboard advertises aftertouch. This is not polyphonic aftertouch, but the less expressive channel aftertouch. Say you play a C3 and hold the note, then hit a C5 and add aftertouch only to the C5. Aftertouch is not applied to only C5 but to both C3 and C5. This can be a bit surprising the first time you try it.
2. No printed manual. A paper manual is something I like getting with hardware.
3. Pitch bend only sends coarse adjustments. This makes the pitch bend knob a bit sensitive to expressive play.
4. Customizing the layout of the instrument requires M-Audio's Enigma software. Personally I don't really like it and wish the Axiom's didn't have a black box sysex format. It'd be nice to customize the layout of the keyboard w/o using this clunky app.
I still really like this keyboard. It feels solid, plays well and is a good mid-entry midi keyboard/controller.

You'll also find 9 dedicated front-panel function buttons to easily access common operations like preset / program change or MIDI channel +/-, octave +/-, and transpose +/-. Use the Controller Mute button to prevent parameters from jumping when you change them, for example, then press Snapshot to transmit all current settings. 20 non-volatile memory locations instantly save and recall your favorite presets--and you can manage an entire preset library on your computer via SysEx dumps and our free Enigma software editor/librarian for PC and Mac.

As a radiologist/nuclear medicine physician working very long hours in front of a computer PACS system I have tried many, many keyboards including all types of Saitek, Logitech, Razor, and Microsoft. This is by far, the best ILLUMINATED keyboard I have ever used. Nothing even comes close. The keyboard is very strong and extremely well built. The back lighting is superb in dark working conditions. So, unless you conscientiously plan to to kill this keyboard, it should last you a lifetime with normal everyday use, like the company claims.

I bought this keyboard after seeing it on an episode of Tekzilla. The price is very high for a keyboard that doesn't have alot of news about it but to me it was worth every cent. I use the keyboard for work. I was able to program a custom layout myself very easly. I added macro strings to speed up the process of captioning photos. I also was able to change the functions of the number keypad of the keyboard. I changed the + into a tab and the - into a space bar the / into ' for the foot mark and so on. It increased my productivity so much that it paid for it's self in less than a month. I have had this keyboard for over 6 months and use it 9 hours a day 5 days a week and I have had no probiblems with it. It did take some getting use to sence the keys are alot bigger than a standard keyboard. And the keys feel differant also. It took only a few days to get use to the new keyboard. I am going to get another for my home office and to use as a backup for my work keyboard in case I ever do run into a probiblem with this board. I have became dependant on the board so much I'd hate to think what it would be like with out it.

IBM USB Keyboard with UltraNav ( 31P8950 ) Review

IBM USB Keyboard with UltraNav ( 31P8950 )
Average Reviews:

Simply put, the keyboards IBM puts in its Thinkpad line of notebooks are the best keyboards I've ever used. The keyboard here is just a large-model Thinkpad keyboard done up for the desktop with USB (with a built-in two-port USB hub). As such, it's perfect. I've wanted one of these since I first laid fingertips on a Thinkpad keyboard in 1997.
I'm a 100 word-per-minute touch typist who's seen a lot of keyboards -- I learned to type on a manual typewriter in the early 1970s and spent summers in college earning money as a keypunch operator on teletype-like keyboards. Before this keyboard, I was always on the lookout for a better keyboard.
The throw of the keys on this keyboard is a lot less than that of a standard desktop keyboard. And although the keys feel somewhat "clicky" (good for feedback), they're also relatively quiet (good for neighbors and family). The key layout is just like on the Thinkpad. I use the windows key a lot, but you can rebind one of the ALT keys in your operating system.
The keyboard extends a long way below the keys, just like the bigger Thinkpad's keyboards. I find this provides perfect palm rests for me.
I would've gotten this just for the keyboard. But there's also a trackpoint built in. And my fingers want to use it due to long experience on IBM notebooks. Of all the notebook pointer technologies, this is the only one that works for me. It works better than other company's implementations of track pointers (like on a Toshiba my wife had). Trackpoints don't bounce on planes or trains like the touchpads. Applying "belt and suspenders" caution, IBM also included a touchpad and two sets of mouse buttons (one high and one low); the pair closest to the keyboard are very convenient for dealing with the endless series of dialog boxes in modern applications.
All told, this keyboard helps my typing speed and accuracy. And even though I'm a speedy typist, my typing and mousing is still the bottleneck in most of the work I do on a computer.

This is a snappy laptop at a bargain-basement price ($399.99 when I bought it). The only reason I can think of for the low price is that the keyboard is a little squeezed from left to right. The keys themselves are not as distinct from one another as I prefer, but are not unlike many other laptops. Otherwise, this computer is very impressive with Windows 7 pro and a fast Intel Core 2 Duo chip. It is remarkably light, has a 2 megapixel camera, and has an attractive and fingerprint-free case. It wakes up almost instantly. I personally like that the keyboard is not off center. I was quite willing to forgo a numeric keypad to get this centering of keys and touchpad. All in all, for basic home use, I think it is quite fine and a very good deal for the money.

Kinesis Advantage USB - Keyboard - USB - white Review

Kinesis Advantage USB - Keyboard - USB - white

This keyboard really helps with my RSI problems. My wrists just don't hurt, as they do when I use a flat keyboard. It does take a little getting used to, but I type enough that I didn't feel this was a big deal.
Unfortunately, I use multiple computers, and it does not deal well with being swapped between computers. Kinesis Tech Support recommended resetting the keyboard by holding down F7 for 15 seconds during power-up, and this works when swapping between my Mac and my PowerBook G4, although it has the unfortunate side effect that key bindings get wiped out every time. However, the keyboard does not work *at all* with my Windows 7 PC. The PC goes "beep beep" when I plug in or unplug the keyboard, so I know it's presence is being detected. However, typing does *nothing* and Kinesis has no drivers for Windows 7. Beware.
The Goldtouch Adjustable keyboard also works wonders for my RSI, and costs 1/3 as much as this Kinesis.

Happy Hacking Keyboard Professional2 (Black) Review

Happy Hacking Keyboard Professional2 (Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Let me start off by describing what the Happy Hacking Keyboard (hhk from now on) is:
The HHK is a small keyboard by any standard, the layout is reminiscent of Sun's System 5 keyboards, where the Control key is located where the Caps Lock usually is. The small form factor is achieved by placing the ESC key is just to the left of the "1" key (as opposed to being to left of the F1 key, sometimes with a gap in between) and the Back Space is just over the enter key (as opposed to being next to the "=" key) also the arrowkeys, pg up/down, insert and delete keys, Prt Sc, Scroll Lock and Break keys are accessed via the Fn key and one of the letter keys on the right side of the keyboard (I,O,P,K.L, etc...). Most of the features of the HHK can be altered via the DIP switches on the back, where you can decide if the Delete key will really be a delete (and delete forward) or a typical backspace. If you can't take the Control key being where it is, or if you use the Caps Lock function regularly you can also change that with the DIP switches. There are many other options you can change, and I'd advise anyone who feels reluctant with the HHK's layout to do a quick google search prior to the purchase and check all the possible combinations of those switches. It has a USB connection (female on the keyboard, so it's detachable) and two usb ports to plug in peripherals.
I own tens of keyboards with varying degrees of collectability and, to be honest, usability. About a year ago I purchased a HHK Lite (similar to the Pro 2 when it comes to layout, although my version had dedicated arrow keys) and I it felt like home in terms of key placement, I'm unix/linux user for the most part and having the control key "right there" and the ESC key just an inch away from my pinky was simply perfect (if you are a vim/emacs user you'll certainly appreciate that). The Lite version however is somewhat sub-par in terms of quality, the Pro 2 is simply in another league and I'll talk about that later in the review. It never stopped me from swapping keyboards every time I had the chance, but I always came back to the HHK Lite. So what can you expect from your first few typing session with a HHK?
As soon as you lay your hands on the keyboard and start typing the first oddity is the backspace key, it's simply not where you'd expect and it takes some time to get used to it being just over the Enter key. Curiously I adjusted very quickly to having the Control key just to the left of my pinky. The lack of cursor keys wasn't a big problem for me, although your milage may of course vary, so do take that into account. the only think I can vouch for regarding the arrow keys is that pressing Fn and then the letter for the correct arrow becomes second nature and to be honest the position of the Fn key guarantees that the "chord" doesn't feel awkward.
Of all the keyboards I own the keycaps on the Pro 2 are simply the best I've ever experienced, it's hard to explain how they have just the right amount of "grain" to make you feel your fingers are holding on to something, but at the same time it doesn't hold them back at all, the plastic feels solid and like something very likely to survive a nuclear holocaust and subsequent fallout, curiously if you pick up the keyboard if feels fairly light though solid in construction. The electronics are as good as they get these days (though some might argue that DIP switches are terribly old fashioned and that with this price tag is certainly could have some internal memory to store settings), the HHK uses Topre switches, the mechanism uses a spring shaped like a cone, according to the makers of the keyboard it allows a better feel and a longer lifespan. BTW, just because it's a mechanical keyboard doesn't mean it's a "clicky" keyboard, it is not, it's not much noisier than your stock keyboard, though if I had to describe the sound it's a bit lower (frequency wise) than one would expect, and it sounds "compressed". This is obviously a very personal opinion, but I like it.
As a quick reference, the Lite version isn't mechanical, the electronics aren't nearly as good and the plastic on the keycaps isn't any better than whatever keyboard came with your desktop computer, for the price the Lite isn't all it's cracked up to be and unless you are hooked on the HHK's layout there are certainly better options out there for about the same buck.
I can't really rave enough about the HHK Pro 2, it's a wonderful keyboard loaded with features and it oozes this feel of being a boutique keyboard.
...but man, that is a steep price tag!

This is not a product for everybody.
To use it you need to be a touch typist and need to devote time to training yourself to it. My regular speed is about 45wpm and I average 18-20wpm with the half-keyboard but have not been working hard at it for more than a few hours.
I have used this keyboard in Windows and Linux, both with the dvorak keyboard layout. I am sure that qwerty will also work fine.
If you can devote the time to it, can touch type AND need to have your right hand free for other things, I recommend this product. For anyone else, don't do it, you will just set it aside and go back to your old keyboard.

Update:
I agree with the other reviewer, an index for the F key would have been greatly appreciated. (I am finding this lacking on many keyboards lately.)

Kinesis Advantage Pro Contoured USB - Keyboard - USB - ergonomic - metallic Review

Kinesis Advantage Pro Contoured USB - Keyboard - USB - ergonomic - metallic
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
It only took me one week of solid use to get used to this board. Now, after three weeks on it, my hands don't hurt on it and I can type all day and all night with no pain.
I like the quick switch between platforms just by keying in two keys and overall I like the feel of this board. There ase some issues with the mechanical key mechanisms that are used in this board.
I have only been using this board for three weeks and already I have had sticking keys. Now, whether it is mechanial or electrical is not yet know. However, rumor has it that it is electrical. The up motion or release of the key is not detected thus creating a repeat condition.
That is the first issue. THe second is that the space and enter keys are binding and do not go down without some gusto. The reason being is the leverage on the mechanism (due to the oversized keys) causes the keyswitch to bind. If the key were shorter and more over the center of the keyswitch, this would not ocurr. THis is a design issue that should be addressed.
I gave this item a four star rating as it took all my pain away. I use it at home and I bring it to work as well as I can't type on a regular board anymore once I became used to this one.
THe back space button is also a pain being on one side. I think it would have been better to have two for both left and right..but, the good news is that if you remap the backspace key to a space and then map the backspace key to the other CTL, this solves that issue. Due to the layout, some commands and shorcuts are hard to execute without mapping. SO, be sure to use the mapping feature.
Summary, while it may not be a Maltron, (the UK original version with premo key switches) this board is pretty good. I do think that for what they charge for these things that they should have used much a better keyswitch mechanism that doesn't repeat nor bind. TO me, that is unacceptable in any keyboard and is unuseable when it worsens. Good thing they have a good warranty.

As someone who learned to type on a Smith Corona typewriter and spent nearly a decade in IT, I have used many keyboards. Whenever I begin a new job, I ditch the keyboard and mouse that's provided for me and replace it with my Kinesis contoured keyboard and Kensington trackball. I just hope motherboards continue to support PS/2 inputs a little while longer cuz that's how old my Kinesis is.
It took me about 2 weeks to get fully adjusted to using the Kinesis, but if you are patient, it will not only pay off with better ergonomics, but speed. I can probably type 5-10WPM faster with the Kinesis than with any other keyboard. Co-workers walking by my desk always thought I'd been over-caffeinated because of how fast I was typing. My only caution to you is if you have root privileges and are learning on a Unix or Linux system. Watch those typos! The only bummer about my version is that it's not USB and doesn't have a Windows key. I personally don't use the macro's but it's extremely useful for developers. One of the companies I used to work for would order them for developers and sysadmins at their request; they all requested them. The new Kinesis Advantage is USB and includes a Windows key. Even with the minor drawbacks on my version, I still preferred it when having to work 8-10 hours/day. I got used to creating shortcuts for everything in Windows.
Another funny advantage to the Kinesis is it keeps other people from "driving" your computer. It's hilarious watching people look for the Enter and Backspace keys like they have never typed before in their lives. Tee hee! Seriously though, this is the best ergonomic keyboard on the market. Now all they need to do is add some multimedia keys, add backlighting, and drop the price by $200 and I'll update mine! Most IT guys and geeks I know like typing in dimly lit environments or in the dark so a backlight would be nice to have..
For those who cannot or will not drop $300 for a keyboard, the Microsoft Natural Ergo Keyboard 4000 is a great value. Just be sure to use the reverse slope attachment.

Toshiba Mini NB305-N410BN 10.1-Inch Java Brown Netbook - 11 Hours of Battery Life Review

Toshiba Mini NB305-N410BN 10.1-Inch Java Brown Netbook - 11 Hours of Battery Life
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have been in the market for a netbook for over a year now. I have spent many a hour pouring over reviews online, watching youtube unboxings and reviews, and actually doing a lot of hands on in retail stores with all of the options out there. I am thrilled to say that after only 24 hours with the Toshiba NB305-N410WH, I know that I waited for just the right one.
The reviews for its' predecessor (the NB205) had put that netbook on the top of most professional reviewers list. And, indeed in my own hands on tests, it was right at the top as well. My main concern was the battery that stuck out of the back on that model. I had come close to overlooking this drawback, as I was so pleased with the rest of the model. What kept me from it was a concern I had read from some reviews indicating that sometimes streaming video would skip or get stuck (a universal concern on most netbooks)either due to processor or graphics.
Here is why I LOVE this little fella:
* The battery issue has been totally adressed, and in fact, upgraded. They have redesigned it and no more ugly bulge of battery sticking out of the back. Plus, they now say it has an 11 hour battery. My test of this gave me around 9.5 hours doing very basic surfing and setup. Not quite 11 hours, but am still elated with 9.5 hours. I can now really feel comfortable about leaving the power cable at home for the day. (however, the power cable is actaully fairly small) (Update 1/21/10--In further testing of the battery life, I seem to now be averaging more like 7 hours under heavy usage, meaning video watching and constant use. I am still more than happy with that. Light usage will give you more like the 9.5 hours I mentioned.)
* I'm extremely happy with the performance. Everyone needs to keep in mind that netbooks have never been designed for processor intensive tasks, but this little guy rocks! The new "Pinetrail" Atom N450 platform seems to be a great fit for this netbook. The graphics engine is updated, as well. I have had absolutely no delays in any streaming video on YouTube or Netflix. (I did notice just a bit of stuttering in Hulu only when watching something full screen but this isn't an issue for me.) Surfing is snappy and responsive, just the way that I like it. For anyone that may have been on the fence about getting a netbook because they were concerned it might not perform, hop right off that fence and get the NB305. Seriously, I have a Macbook Pro and Dell laptop and this one has instantly become my "go to" for surfing on the couch or from bed. And, I know this will be the one I now take anywhere out of the house.
* The overall look and feel of the NB305 is truly "best in class". My big gripe with a ton of netbooks out there is their glossy covers-especially the black, but even other color glossy covers are fingerprint magnets. They just always look smudged and feel cheap to me. I got the textured white model and just love it. Even though I am sure it is all plastic, too, it just looks more expensive. The cover totally repels fingerprints and just "feels good". The keyboard and trackpad have received universal love in the previous model and I absolutely agree. The keyboard is extremely easy to type on. No issues at all for me there. The trackpad is truly a selling feature as it is multi-touch. I have this on my Macbook Pro and LOVE it on this netbook. I love being able to do the 2 finger scroll up and side to side. It really makes surfing the web a joy. (I now curse my Dell for not having this.) This model actually reduced it's weight to 2.6 lbs making it super easy to take with you. The bottom does heat up a bit but I never felt uncomfortable having it directly on my lap. (Update 2/20/10: Ok, there have been times when it has been uncomfortable on my lap. Especially if you are blocking the vents, which is easy to do when on your lap. I now just set it on the protective sleeve I bought for it and we're good to go.) This new model has sleeker look than previous models, a little more streamlined in the front. Overall, form factor gets a big A+.So, there are a couple areas for improvement, however, I don't think they are "deal breakers" given the other areas where the NB-305 excels:
1) The speakers are not great. Actually, they're pretty bad compared to my Mac and Dell. This is definitely an area to improve on, but have found this to be true of all the netbooks I have been able to hear. I'm not saying that you can't hear what you are watching, but I will plan on using earbuds for watching video or listening to music.
2) I'm a little bugged that these just come with Windows7 Starter and not Windows7 Home Premium. I feel a little "punked" into having to pay an extra $80 for the upgrade (which was extremely simple and fast, by the way. I was able to do it right online--no need for external optical drive). Some people will be fine with Windows7 Starter as it does allow you to do basic functions, but I ultimatley had to cave in and upgrade. You aren't able to personalize things in Windows7 Starter, which was a minor but grating flaw. (On a side note, I am really liking Windows7 Home Premium. This netbook handles it fine.)
3) I'm kinda concerned that this did not come with any restore cd's. Yes, I realize that this doesn't have a cd/dvd drive, but I guess I just like the comfort of having them if needed. I know that I should back up the system on my own, but I guess I just am not sure what happens if the OS crashes or hard drive has to be replaced. I think there must be new ways to restore, nowadays. I guess I will hopefully never cross that bridge.
4) (Update 2/20/10: It does get quite warm around the vents. This may or may not be an issue for you. I can deal with it.)
Overall, I think you can see that I am obviously extremely happy with this purchase. If you have been waiting to buy a netbook, I would give this one some serious thought. Two enthusiastic thumbs up!
(UPDATE 1/19/10: I did upgrade to 2GB of memory and would recommend it. I didn't really need to, but can't resist trying to upgrade my gadgets, and everything is just a little faster and I just watched Heros on Hulu full screen and didn't notice issues that I had before. I didn't even mind the speakers come to think of it--although the speakers are still the only weak link hardware wise. Installing the memory is a snap. You just need a tiny Philips screwdriver to remove one screw from back cover, pop out the old, pop in the new, replace the cover and boot it back up. It was recognized by the netbook with no problems. There is a video on YouTube on doing this to the NB205 model and the process is exactly the same for the NB305. Still very happy.)
(UPDATE 2/20/10: The type of memory that I got was the one that Amazon usually suggests: Crucial Technology CT25664AC800 2GB 200-pin SODIMM DDR2 PC2-6400 Memory Module.
I also purchased CaseCrown sleeve: CaseCrown Double Memory Foam Netbook Pouch (White Faux Suede) to Carry the Toshiba Mini NB305 10.1-inch Netbook Very happy with that, too. Fits like a glove and makes it super easy to transport the NB305 and feel it is very protected.
Overall, still extremely happy.)

Sony VAIO VPC-EE33FX/BJ 15.5-Inch Laptop (Black) Review

Sony VAIO VPC-EE33FX/BJ 15.5-Inch Laptop (Black)
Average Reviews:

I bought this computer to replace a very good HP that just got too old. HP's computers weren't getting very good reviews so I thought I'd try a Sony. So far so good. I am disappointed with the sound quality. The speakers are small, underpowered, and sound like an old AM radio. But I bought this for business so no biggie.
I like the numeric keypad. The display is bright, the computer is quite fast, it's easy to set up, and I am glad that Sony didn't bog it down with a bunch of software that I don't need. Overall I am pleased with every aspect except the speakers. Time will tell how it performs but I have had good luck with Sony products.
As an update I'll say after a few weeks of use that I still enjoy the machine but the battery life is terrible. I'll have to invest in a larger battery as this one is really only 3 hours at best.

Toshiba Satellite M645-S4112 14.0-Inch LED Laptop (Black) Review

Toshiba Satellite M645-S4112 14.0-Inch LED Laptop (Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I got this laptop mainly because of its blu-ray capabilities, but also because of the quality and affordable price. I had done a good amount of research on laptops with blu-ray and found that Toshiba had some of the lowest prices on the market for their 14" models and with the Toshiba brand being one of the best on the market I decided on this. I wish I could have found a similar model with a bigger screen and faster processor, but overall I am very happy with it.
Pros: the eco setting is nice to help save battery power. The HDMI output is really nice for connecting to a tv screen. solid overall performance - just what I expected
Cons: The keyboard keys are not very sensitive which can be a little frustrating having to retype certain letters or commands. The hard drive impact sensor is probably a little too sensitive, but the setting can be changed if needed which is okay
