Brother MFC-8860DN Flatbed Laser All-in-One Printer with Duplex Review

Brother MFC-8860DN Flatbed Laser All-in-One Printer with Duplex

I bought the 8860DN a couple weeks ago to replace my aging HP 3330. While I'm quite happy with much of the 8860DN, there are a few things that could use improvement. Some of these can be addressed in software, others I fear are hardware issues.
BTW, I'm on my second machine because I thought some of the issues with the first warranted a replacement. Now I know its a "common" issue.
1) The print engine creaks and makes popping sounds as the fuser heats and cools. Even the demo machine in Office Depot does the same thing. The creaking is really annoying if you sit near the machine. A Brother senior tech rep tells me this issue is common to many Brother lasers. Well, gimme a break because HP and others don't creak! **UPDATE** Brother Corporate office tells me the popping sounds are considered "normal" by the engineers and at this time they have no plans to fix. Pathetic if you ask me. I think most users will agree!!!
2) The scanner ADF head will sometimes make odd sounds when its scanning the last page of a multi-page scan. It sounds as if the motor or gears need lubrication.
3) I've had the COPY function lockup on me a couple times (other fucntions continue to work) and the only way to correct is to power cycle. Cause is unknown but the clowns at Brother support tell me to keep power cycling the resolve the problem. IDIOTS!
4) The IFAX feature is not very well explained and is somewhat odd in the way it works (or tries to work). I've yet to really figure it out. As an alternative I use the FAX FORWARD TO EMAIL function which works well.
5) A PC software bug: When scanning multiple pages its impossible to multitask since the scanner interface takes the focus away from whatever you are doing everytime it begins scanning a new page. Brother apparently knows about this issue and will correct in the next software version.
Other than the above isues, I'm fairly satisfied in the short time I've been using this MFC. If I may comment in response to one of the previous reviews, the beep sound is adjustable and I believe if the user took the time to read the manual, he'd be quite happy with the level of customization available on this machine (I rarely hear of people complaining about too many features). Oh, and yes as stoneaged as it sounds, some people still do occasionally receive faxes.
As far as I'm concerned, the print speed is excellent. Even complex pages print quickly with nearly no delay between pages. A huge improvment over my old HP. Also, I find the scan speed on non complex scans to be excellent. Complex and high res scans are somewhat slower, but they are with many scanners (and certainly about every multifucntion I've run across). Print duplexing is another very nice touch and I'm surprised it works as well as it does. The 8860DN gets the job done and it does them well overall.
Things about the 8860DN I prefer over the new HP 3390 I compared it to.
1) 8860 has a legal size scan plate
2) 8860 will fax forward to email
3) 8860 is $150 less with approx. the same cost per page in consumables.
4) 8860 does duplex scan, copy

I bought this device with high - but realistic - expectations, and I wasn't disappointed! During the 5 months I researched it before buying, I read every article and blog, and watched every video I could find about it, so I had an idea of its capabilities as well as its perceived shortcomings. However, the shortcomings, I believe, came from unrealistic expectations. For example, there is a lot of complaint about the position of the camera on the front of the device rather than on the back, facing away from the user. I wasn't disappointed in that, since the device is used primarily for video conferencing using Skype (and others). Yes it takes photos, but that's not the primary purpose for the camera, so I didn't have expectations to use it as one.
There is a learning curve for me, as I've never used Linux before. But it is usable right out of the box even to a windows user like me, very easy to find my way around the device, and even included a getting started video right on the opening screen!
Although I purchased this on March 2nd, my first device was defective. Nokia's tech support was TOP NOTCH, both on the phone, and via email. They worked with me to get the device returned, and sent a replacement within a few days. This is the first Nokia purchase I've ever made but I am so impressed with their customer service that it definitely will not be the last.
Battery life is long, and this has replaced my PalmPilot (games, phone numbers, notes) and Zune (mp3's, photos), plus my bedside alarm clock and radio. I carry it with me everywhere, and listen to both mp3's and my favorite interent radio station, depending on the availability of a wifi signal, and can show all of my photos to anyone at any time, more easily than in a photo album. In addition I'm able to keep up with my email and Facebook (use [...] for a mobile version of the site) when I stop somewhere for lunch, and can look up anything on the web on the fly.
The N810 will also connect to the internet via my cell phone using bluetooth, but I haven't had the occasion to use that feature as most places I go in our small town have wifi and that is primarily why I purchased the device.
I am thrilled with my N810 and it has quickly become a large part of my daily life, from the time I turn off its alarm clock in the morning, until the time I fall asleep listening to internet radio at night!

Nokia 02700T6 N810 WiMAX Edition Portable Internet Tablet Review

Nokia 02700T6 N810 WiMAX Edition Portable Internet Tablet

The N810 WiMax Edition, if you can even get your hands on it, is a fun little device. It is just like the regular (blue) N810, but with a WiMax radio tuned to 2.5 GHz for WiMax service provided by Xohm (the only WiMax provider). The device is not locked to WiMax, but any provider at 2.5 GHz.
The battery life is good, but with the WiMax signal, the connection drops when driving around, but the Xohm service is brand new (less than a month old at this time of writting) and I'm sure there will be improvements in the works.

VortexBox 1TB Automatic CD ripping NAS Review

VortexBox 1TB Automatic CD ripping NAS
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this gadget after a considerable amount of frustration with a Netgear ReadyNAs I had expected to use as a server for my Logitech Squeezebox Duet. The ReadyNAS supposedly performs this function but with a large collection of files it is simply too slow to keep up with indexing and searching etc. Plus ripping my 2,000+ CDs was a real chore. I read about this product and jumped on it.
Well, within a week of getting my Vortexbox appliance, all my CDs are in my mini storage, my Levinson 31.5 transport sold on eBay, and my entire CD collection is now available to me throughout my home without the slightest issues, disappointments or problems.
I initially corresponded with the manufacturer a few times with questions about configuring this device to suit my particular needs I got immediate, understanding an useful help. I cannot speak more highly of the builder. In fact, I sent a modest voluntary donation to them as I felt the help I got was above-and-beyond. Since I became familiar with this gadget, I have had zero issues, it has been up and running for over sixty days without a reboot, issue, glitch etc. You just pop a CD in the slot and it will rip it to flac and/or any almost any other format you care to have.
Useful tip: if you are ripping a large collection disable the creation of MP3 copies (the system rips to both flac and mp3 by default). This will speed up the tedious job of ripping enormously and you can go back later on and create MP3 versions of any or all of your stuff as a background task when you're done transcribing your collection. Info on how this is done is on the manufacturer's simple but very useful web site.
Anyway, this is a great product from nice people and if anything happened to it I'd buy another in a flash.

Synology 5-Bay Plug-n-Use Expansion Unit to DS1010+, DS710+, and DS1511+ Network Attached Storage DX510 (Black) Review

The present version of synology's o/s (132 MB!) is only able to support 16TB (before applying the raid loss) volumes. What's a volume? It's a raid or no-raid group of disk drives that combines. A stock 1010+ will let you combine 5 ea 2TB (really 1.82 TB) disks to end up with a 9.1 TB volume (which meets the OS limits of 16TB) but when you go to expand it with this unit, you have 10 drives instead of 5 and a 18.2 TB volume if you allocate all drives to one volume (which is the idea - to have as many data disks and just one parity disk). Unfortunately if you went all the way with 2TB drives, you went too far and exceeded the 16TB limit, so the last disk must be left out of your raid volume (it gets 9 drives, one is a parity drive, and your data drives are 8 x 1.82 TB for 14.56 TB of data from the 8 data drives with raid5 protection). The 10th drive is leftover and can be used as a separate 1.82 gb storage volume on the network.
The other option is to make 2 raid5 volumes, each with 4 data disks and 1 parity disk. The advantage is that if the expansion box fails, only the volume on it suffers any data exposure, whereas if the expansion box fails with a volume spanning to the expansion box and the expansion box looses power or e-sata it will destroy the main volume. (the e-sata cable that comes with this unis has 2 screws that hold it in place, and a ups is highly advised)
Either way you loose 2 drives in a 10 drive system - with a 14.56TB volume you loose drive 10 to be just a plain old 1.82 GB disk drive, with 2 separate volumes, you loose 2 drives to parity storage.
For more detail on using the 1010+ see my comments posted below - If I just wanted a big raid, in retrospect, I'd consider their 8 drive rackmount version (which would give me 7 data disks in raid5 or 6 data disks in raid6). The reason is it avoids the 2nd power cord and the e-stata cable for the sidecar - if there is a problem with either of those and your raid spans the sidecar you loose everything fast. The 8 drive rackmount is almost 10 drives, and they have a 16 TB software limit, so with 10 disks, 1 of them becomes "just a disk" and you get 9 disks maximum in a full box + sidecar system - might as well get the enhanced reliability of the 8 drive system for that and not have a 20 inch umbilical cord between your boxes and 2 power cords.
Also power draw is VERY LOW - the system implements spindown when nobody is using the raid.
see my comments below for more info of how these are made.
The good news is that synology does release frequent firmware upgrades which are easy to install. I'll put through a request to support 32GB volumes instead of 16GB so that we can have less parity loss.

Synology DiskStation 4-Bay (Diskless) Network Attached Storage DS411J (White) Review

Synology DiskStation 4-Bay (Diskless) Network Attached Storage DS411J (White)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
OK, my review might be biased. Coming from the Drobo, which was absolutely terrible, to this Synology unit was the best technological move I've made since I switched to OSX 10.1 all those years ago. Speeds are fantastic, built-in server features are excellent, and aesthetically the unit is very pleasing.
Unboxing/Installation/Initial Setup:
The unit arrived from Amazon in a large cardboard box along with the two SATA drives that I ordered for it (Western Digital 2 TB Caviar Green SATA Intellipower 64 MB Cache Bulk/OEM Desktop Hard Drive WD20EARS). The box for the 411j was very sleek and easy to unpack. No weird seals or wire ties to deal with. The unit itself fits well with the IKEA-assisted look of my office. To install the drives, you remove some handscrews off the back and the top/sides of the unit will come off (in the stock photo, the aluminum piece with the logo on it). The drive trays are plastic and slide out of the back of the unit. You just sit the drives into the unit and use the included screws to mount the drive in place. Then, just push the tray back in and the drive will be connected. No cables to connect was a big plus here. After the drives are all installed, push screw the back on and plug in the power and network cables.
One thing that was unexpected was that the unit has no software installed on it initially. Not a bad concept though..it forces you to load the most current version this way. The software from the CD happened to be the current version (major revision in December I think) but that might not always be the case, you it might be better to just download the latest Synology Assistant and DSM software from the company website before you begin. The Synology assistant recognizes the unit on the network and allows you to install the DSM (operating system) onto the unit. This process is pretty quick, and the unit will automatically restart when it's done.
Disk Allocation and Backups:
The recommended data allocation that the Synology makes is to use all the drives that are available, and in the hybrid RAID format. This will allow for one drive to fail (assuming you have more than one in it) and all the data will still be fine. It also lets the drives to be different models/sizes, which isn't compatible with regular RAID. You don't get the full drive size available to you. You actually lose the space of one of the biggest drives in the unit for redundancy. Plus a small formatting loss. The wizard makes the partitioning very simple; you can have multiple volumes if you want. I just went with one and have multiple folders. You can also have USB drives plugged in (and printers too I think, but my AIO HP is already networked) that are treated as an additional volume. One nice feature here is that the device will backup to the external drive on a defined schedule. So actually, the Synology can fail and the data would still be safe on the backup drive.
Shared Folders:
The device is capable of creating multiple shared folders. You can create a very complex multi-user system with individual shared folders if you want to. Or you can go the simple route like I did and just have a couple including the app-generated music and video folders. I also have a Time Machine folder that has the sparsebundle images that I use to backup my two Macs. Only one user with full access rights, and read-only access to everything for guests. In my home setup, this is plenty because the computers are the only devices that write data, and my jailbroken AppleTv2 is the only device that reads from it (for XBMC). As far as allowing guests read-only access to everything, my WiFi is WPA2-encrypted, so only those select few people have access. And those that do I couldn't care less about what data of mine they see.
Applications:
I haven't explored the apps very much aside from the media server. It will create a DLNA environment that allows the PS3 and also some TVs (I think) to play movies directly from the drive. For those of you that use PS3MediaServer for this purpose, it's not foolproof. PS3MediaServer trans codes on the fly those file formats that the PS3 can't naively play. The Synology, however, plays the files directly. This is a hardware restriction. Putting a CPU and enough memory into the unit to handle video transcoding would raise the price to about $1K. You can still use PS3MediaServer and map the videos folder as a file location, but be aware that if you do this wireless there will be bumps. If the computer is plugged directly into the router that the NAS is plugged into, it should be fine.
Misc:
The unit is surprisingly quiet. My old Drobo was too loud to keep on my desk (and ended up on a table in the corner). It's also very fast compared to the Drobo. On this unit, I average ~30Mbps write and up to ~45Mbps read. I use Aperture and have my entire library stored on the unit. It handles this fine and suffers no lag issues. One computer is directly connected to the router where the NAS is. The unit has gigabit ethernet on it, so that's great. Speed from laptops will obviously be slower. Even wireless N speed can only sustain about 15MB from what I've noticed, but that has nothing to do with the unit. On the Drobo, the fan at the back was behind a plate that couldn't be removed. I like to be able to open the unit and clean it if I have to. My home is near an airport, so it can sometimes be quite dusty during the warm months of the year. Overall, I couldn't be more happy with this purchase. The performance improvements over my Drobo were enormous. It's UI is great and has many features that I hope to someday experiment and explore.
Edit: Tuesday, March 15, 2011 - When I purchased the unit, I put the two mentioned drives above into the unit, but I also put two 1TB Green drives from my old Drobo into it. One of those two drives failed last week. The unit sent me an email notification and set off on its warning beeps that the volume was degraded. I immediately Teamviewered into my desktop from my iPhone, and logged into the Synology UI. I was able to discover the serial number of the disabled hard drive and request an RMA from WD. Credit card was authorized for the replacement price, received the new one via UPS 2-Day Air, and returned the old one via UPS ground. For anyone that hasn't done this, you get charged the price of the replacement unit, you buy a discounted UPS shipping label ($6), and send the old one back in the replacement's box. When they receive it, you get refunded the replacement price.
The NAS allowed me to "repair" the volume with the new drive, and a few hours later the unit was back to operating at 100%. Flawless :-D

Installed on my 2 year old Dell Latitude e6400 with no problems. It is amazingly fast. I replaced a 7200RPM drive and saw a huge performance boost. It's like a completely new laptop.
I dual boot with Windows 7 and Linux. Both now load to a usable desktop in about 15 seconds or less. I'm so happy that I will be upgrading my MacBook Pro with one of these soon.

I have owned my N810 (affectionately named N8 - or Nate) for about 6 months now and it has become invaluable to me. These are the activities with which I use it:
- communication, using Google Voice, or Skype
- receiving and sending email, either via included email client, or web-based email
- web browsing
- watching and saving YouTube videos
- tracking and mapping via GPS unit
- taking notes
- games/entertainment with OS2008 games, or using Palm Emulator and my favorite old Palm Pilot games
- listening to music; sound quality is EXCELLENT for a hand-held (and I'm a musician, and picky)!
- recording voice notes
- taking photos and making small videos for online use
- keeping recipes; its small size make it excellent for reading in my tiny kitchen...and I can listen to music at the same time!
- reading eBooks
- text messaging via Google Voice/wifi
There are only a couple of cons that I have found so far. The front-facing camera, intended for use in video conferencing, makes photography tricky at best. This is acceptable to me, though, since it was never meant to replace a digital camera. The other is that the O/S will require a learning curve for the average point-and-click Windows user. While the device is definitely easy to pick up and use with the installed software, and loading new programs from either the Nokia website or the maemo site using the application manager, most more detailed tasks will require a certain amount of learning for most; in short, it ain't Windows :).
There are numerous other uses and apps for this device. Even after 6 months I feel I've hardly scratched the surface of its possibilities. It is always on the road with me, has replaced my laptop on weekend trips, and replaced my more cumbersome bedtime books and magazines. It has saved me money in this way, and also in cell phone/texting costs; it has already paid for itself - probably twice over.
In short, N8 has replaced both my Zune and my Palm Pilot, and become itself an irreplaceable part of my life.

QNAP TS-210 2-Bay Desktop Network Attached Storage Review

QNAP TS-210 2-Bay Desktop Network Attached Storage
Average Reviews:

I have tried a few of these boxes, and settled for QNAP. To make long story short, this box has very low operating and standby power (not counting drive power), it is quiet with smart fan (3 speeds auto/manual adjusted based on drive or system temp), transfer speed for >4GB files from my Dell XPS thru gigabit switching hub is around 10MByte/s write, 25MB/s read. USB drive plugs directly into the box, write/read is about 12MB/s (not fully tested)
I use this to stream 1080p and other media to my Brite-View BV-5005HD streamer box Brite-View BV-5005HD "CinemaTube" 3-in-1 1080p Full HD Multimedia Player/Streamer/Torrent Downloader, Black, cpu loading is only around 10-13% during super smooth playback. Box is not heating up much, keeping at 40 some Deg C. Even if the box is 100% running file transfer, media streaming seems to take precedence over file operations.
Its BT/ftp download manager is a snap to use and performance is comparable to PC utorrent.
The most obvious difference is the speed of its web user interface, it is super fast when compared with other brands, it is also independent of it cpu loads.
SSH is easily accessed using clients such as putty. Neat little Linux box.
The only down side are being its bright LEDs in front, must be covered if you are watching movies with lights out.
Enjoy, this box will not quit on you!

The QNAP TS-210 Turbo NAS is the most economic two-drive storage solution for Prosumers and SOHO users who want a NAS with compelling features, solid performance, low power consumption and high reliability. Incorporating a Marvell 800 MHz CPU and 256MB DDRII RAM, the power consumption of the TS-210 Turbo NAS in operation is only 14W which is much less than that of a PC. The TS-210 offers features more often found in much higher end NAS servers, including built-in iSCSI target service, policy-based unauthorized IP blocking, SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol), remote replication, a Gigabit LAN port, and 3 USB ports (the front USB port includes an auto-copy feature). The TS-210 Turbo NAS is not only an ideal storage server but also a multimedia station to enhance your home entertainment experience. The built-in UPnP/ DLNA media server (with TwonkyMedia enabled) of the Turbo NAS supports gaming consoles for media playing and the NAS works well with NFS-supported High-Definition (HD) digital media players. Also, the TS-210\'s AJAX-based NAS management software utilizes a web interface that allows intuitive management of all the Turbo NAS features. The Turbo NAS supports RAID 1 Mirroring for non-stop service and easy maintenance. When data crash occurs, the administrator can be alerted by e-mail alarm and LED indication. The hard disk drive can be replaced by hot swapping without turning off the server. The intelligent data rebuilding capability allows users to replace a failed drive by hot-swap. This enables automatic data rebuilding to the new drive without suffering from any system downtime.

Other simple home/small office routers have a better to use graphical user interface with my experiance.
If you lack knowledge in using the command line interface in IOS (Cisco routers operating systems), this device won't be of much help to you.

I run Slackware Linux 12.0 on my computer, and this adapter card works great. So far, I have only tried it at the default 1.5Gb/s on the hard drive. I really do not need 3.0 Gb/s, but the card supports it. Slackware supports this card directly with no need to add drivers from Promise, but the raw source code is available from Promise if you have an old version of Linux from somewhere.
This card is listed in the Linux hardware page below.

Samsung NB30 10.1-Inch Netbook (Black) Review

Samsung NB30 10.1-Inch Netbook (Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I do tech support for a living, and often find that I need to have a computer of my own (rather than use a client's PC) when I am onsite fixing problems. My previous portable notebook was a 7-pound Sony which really had way too many bells and whistles for what I usually needed -- that is, just a basic PC, as light and as rugged as possible. When I saw the Samsung NB30, I knew I'd found what I was looking for.
The NB30 is a sweet little machine -- it is fairly speedy, it has great battery life, it's light (even with the AC adapter in my backpack, the entire package is less than 4 pounds), and it's got a "corduroy" outer case which is fingerprint- and scratch-resistant. The Windows 7 Starter operating system was easily upgraded to Windows 7 Ultimate (since I do tech support, I need full access to the entire operating system) using Windows Anytime Upgrade, and upgrading the RAM from 1 GB to 2 GB (highly recommended) took only a couple of minutes.
If you're looking for a netbook, I highly recommend the NB30.

Avoid a rough day on both you and your netbook with the Samsung NB30 netbook PC, which features an innovative hard disk drive (HDD) freefall sensor that protects data by automatically parking the HDD if it senses the netbook dropping. The exterior is protected, too, with a scratch-resistant, texturized matte black finish. And the NB30 also incorporates a water-tight seal to prevent potential damage from contact with up to 50cc of spilled water (less than 2 ounces) if removed within 10 seconds.

This lightweight netbook gives you access to all the computing tools you'll need on the go, and it offers a 10.1-inch LED-backlit display, the latest Intel Atom N450 processor, Windows 7 Starter operating system, and up to 6.5 hours of battery life. Mini 1120NR Review

After seeing the youtube review by laptopmag (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_TBBBnqBtAI), I immediately got two. I was looking for the SSD (solid state hard drive) which the Mini has. The 10" screen is also a great addition, I don't think I can live with the smaller 8" version. The near full size keyboard was the deal maker. The only thing missing that I wanted was the VGA out or some kind of docking solution when I bring the netbook home.
The performance is good, given the low specs compared with full size laptops. If you are just doing browsing or word processing, this netbook is great! Not the mention the small footprint. The quick ship model that I got came with a 3-cell battery which, in my opinion, ran long enough. I believe a good deal of battery is saved by not having to run a traditional hard drive, which would have mechanical moving parts.
In short, get this if you want to get a computer for normal everyday tasks; email, internet, word, etc.

I chose this scanner over the comparable Fujitsu model becasue of my positive experience w/ Canon over time. I recommend a call to Canon after installation if you need help tweaking the configuration settings, it makes a big difference. When I received this scanner, I couldn't get the scanner to load more than 5 of the expected 50 pages at a time. I called Canon tech support and the sent me a new roller kit via FedEx overnight, free of charge. The scanner works flawlessly now. I highly recommend this product.

Great little laptop for my girlfriend: sleek enough to be fun to use, and small enough to go places with her easily (and for someone living in the city ala Public Transportation, that's a treat). This little device is seemingly well powered as an interent and all around user box. The software came with a 'dumbed-down' version of Windows I could care less about, quickly rebuilt as a powerhouse Ubuntu machine. The ironic benefit of that is it took up to 2GB of RAM versus the '1.5 total' it says it can only handle. The 6 cell battery adds some great power to it for this size.
About the only complaint is the right side shift button is shrunk to fit the keyboard and make room for the arrow keys. The result is I often hit the up arrow instead of shift, but just like my girlfriend, I'm getting used to it quickly. No bluetooth or cd/dvd drive, but I never use discs anymore, and it does have usb ports to add bluetooth if you need. Buy a 3G stick, and you have an always connected laptop.
Those of you with question, feel free to ask! I am an Art & IT Director, so I should be hacking this thoroughly. There are also reviews on this device, which is the same except color:

TS200V - Server - Tower - 1 - Pentium - G6950 - 2.8 Ghz - 2 Gb - 250 Gb - 1 Year
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I recently needed to replace an aging Linux-based SOHO server. This system is actually used in a hybrid server/desktop role, with the desktop duties being limited to use as a light-duty secondary workstation mostly for web browsing and guest access. Thus it is important that an X server run reliably without affecting the overall stability of the system. On the server side of things, in addition to the usual file/print/DNS services, the primary function is to act as a media server for several networked Logitech SqueeezeBox audio devices throughout the house.
The Lenovo TS200v (model: 0981-12U) fit my needs almost perfectly: a reputable manufacturer, a reasonable base price, low power usage, enterprise-class HDD, ECC memory, and best of all, sold without an OS! I really dislike being forced to pay for an OS I'm never going to use.
As good as the TS200v looked on paper, I could find absolutely no firsthand information on how non-enterprise Linux distributions run on these boxes. They use a relatively new Intel 3450 chipset and Clarkdale processors with integrated graphics, so I was mildly concerned about hardware support in non-bleeding-edge Linux distributions.
For "production" systems that I don't want to worry much about, I prefer to run Debian stable. On laptops, or other machines with newer/less-supported hardware, my second choice is generally the current Ubuntu LTS. Since the TS200v has all Intel-based hardware, I was hopeful that, at the very least, I could find a Linux distribution that would run on it until either Debian or Ubuntu caught-up with the new hardware.
After the machine arrived, I was very relieved when my first attempt to boot it from a USB flash drive using RIPLinuX 9.8 (a lightweight system recovery distro) was fully successful.
However an attempt to install Debian 5.0.3 (lenny) met with issues due to the debian-installer's e1000e driver not recognizing the specific rev in the TS100v, a 82578DM. However I worked around this by temporarily installing an old e100 PCI card. After the install completed, the e1000e was recognized by the current lenny kernel. The real showstopper for Debian was that the Xorg server that comes with Lenny is too old to deal with the Clarkdale graphics. So at least for now, Debian stable wasn't going to be an option unless I wanted to run it in a non-GUI server-only mode. Some cursory research indicates that the next version of Debian, 6.0 (squeeze) may have better support for the hardware in the TS200v.
Next I tried Ubuntu 10.04 LTS (Lucid Lynx). This install went very well and all the main devices, including the integrated graphics, sound, and network card work fine under Lucid. However access to ECC correction data via the Linux EDAC drivers doesn't appear to be working yet, but hopefully support will come in the future. (Note that the ECC memory does still provide some benefit even without being able to see the correction notifications in the OS.)
I then installed two additional 1TB Caviar Black drives, for a total of three drives in the machine. The third is in the spare 5.25" bay using some custom modified drive adapter rails. (Note that one additional 3.5" HDD is the most you can install this system without taking special measures.) I also replaced the read-only DVD drive with an Lite-On IHAS424-98 DVD writer and installed a 2 port eSATA PCIe card for use with an external SATA dock.
Using a kill-a-watt device I measured the idle power (with 3x7200rpm drives) at 49W, PF of 0.95. This is with the 'ondemand' CPU governor, which appears to be the default for Ubuntu 10.04. At full CPU load (using mprime) on both cores, the power usage peaks around 89W, PF 0.96. I'm running this machine in a room with an ambient temp of 67F (19C) and whether loaded or not, the fan speed does not seem to change. With the three drives, the sound produced is only just above the threshold of audibility in a quiet room. It would be safe to assume in hotter environments the fans might increase in speed and noise level.
Regarding the Intel Advanced Management Technology (AMT), I've only played with it a bit. This particular model only comes with the "Standard" AMT, the higher end i5-based models apparently have additional features enabled. Since it is not required in my situation I have disabled AMT after my initial experimentation.
I've had the machine several weeks now and it has been completely stable. Performance-wise it is a huge improvement over the previous machine which had a 1.8GHz Pentium 4 and comparatively sluggish PC133 memory. I am very happy with the value provided by this inexpensive server-class machine.
NOTE: At the time of this review was written the Amazon photograph is *not* of a TS200v 098112U.
