Sharp Mobilon TriPad PV-6000 Handheld PC Review

Sharp Mobilon TriPad PV-6000 Handheld PC

Overall, this is an excellent product for people who don't need a full price, full weight notebook while travelling, but rather something with which to take basic notes, do scheduling and e-mail and simple web browsing, and also, especially, reading books downloaded from the web. Pluses are the very usable keyboard, the amazing battery life, and the screen, which while not great for graphics, is fine for text. The feature which allows you to fold the screen down over the keyboard, and use it as a tablet, is fantastic. Download a book, and set the browser at the largest font, hold the machine as a tablet, and you can comfortably read for hours, just like reading a book (although the machine, while light, is heaviest on top, which is a little awkward). For twice the cost of the RocketBook, you get just as good a screen, and word processing, scheduling and internet capacity to boot. Of course, this is too large and heavy to function as a real handheld. And there are the frustrating limits of all Windows CE machines, especially a Word program which is not just stripped down, but castrated (no page numbers, search function or footnotes). The process of connecting to desktop PCs is easy, but slower than it needs to be. But overall, this is a great little machine.

Nokia 02700T6 N810 WiMAX Edition Portable Internet Tablet Review

Nokia 02700T6 N810 WiMAX Edition Portable Internet Tablet

The N810 WiMax Edition, if you can even get your hands on it, is a fun little device. It is just like the regular (blue) N810, but with a WiMax radio tuned to 2.5 GHz for WiMax service provided by Xohm (the only WiMax provider). The device is not locked to WiMax, but any provider at 2.5 GHz.
The battery life is good, but with the WiMax signal, the connection drops when driving around, but the Xohm service is brand new (less than a month old at this time of writting) and I'm sure there will be improvements in the works.

Viliv S5 PRE-H 4.8-Inch Portable PC Review

Viliv S5 PRE-H 4.8-Inch Portable PC
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I purchased mine with Windows XP home on it. VERY fast UI... I was actually amazed by its speed out of the box.
'Cube UI' is junk, dont bother using it, in fact you can safely remove pretty much everything that is installed on it out of the box. The only thing you should keep is the viliv manager software, so you can run the calibration and such.
Worked great out of the box, locked up 2 or 3 times... its to be expected.
I installed Vista home premium on it, took quite a while to get it up and running. If you plan to do the same, here is how to do it 100% trouble free. Grab a 8 or 16 gig jump drive. Copy all the vista files from it, onto the jump drive using a desktop pc. Download the Vista service pack 1 and service pack 2, OFFLINE install files, copy them onto the jump drive. Download ALL of the s5 drivers from the myviliv site, put them on the jump drive.
Mine was formatted as fat32, you need to run Convert Disk to make it a NTFS drive, before you can install Vista. This takes about an hour. DO NOT convert the disk if you dont plan on installing vista immediatly, as XP is unstable on NTFS, on this device.
THEN do the install, takes about an hour. Once installed DO NOT try to install the drivers yet. I did, and thats why I had such a harsh experience. Install sp1 and sp2, takes about 3 hours total. THEN install the drivers.
If you try to install the drivers without sp1 and sp2 installed, you will have a massive amount of headaches and wierd issues. Once sp1 & sp2 were installed, completely flawless install.
Battery life: is amazing. I use it all day long, I charge my cell phone off it. It is very impressive.
Storage: The hard drive in it is NOT a solid state, but for the price, what do you expect? The partitioning is a little odd. the c drive is about 30 gigs, the d drive is about 20, and the rest is the emergency system restore.
Screen size: 4.8" screen, very tiny, but amazingly crisp. Everyone is amazed at how readable it is. The resolution on it is 1024x600 out of the box, with Vista installed I can set it to 1024x768. At the higher resolution the touch screen is a little off, and calibrating doesn't help.
Wifi: Very good range/speed. Much better than I had expected.
Connectivity: It has a USB Host and USB link. I couldnt get the USB link to work on my Desktop pc running Windows 7 64 bit. I had it partially working on XP Pro. I could add/remove files on it, but I couldnt access the internet while linked.
USB host works perfect, no issues with keyboards, web cams, etc.
Media: It comes with K-Lite codec pack installed, I would install the Mega Codec Pack.
Portability: Simply awesome, its a little large for a 'pocket device', especially when compared to a cell... But its a FULL REAL COMPUTER, that can actually fit in your pocket.
Speed: It is surprisingly fast. I wouldnt expect to be able to play modern games on it, older ones should work great.
Browser: No issue playing you tube videos, or browsing the web, it has a REAL web browser on it, not the junk that comes on cell phones.
Portable browsing: No issue installing PDA net and tethering it to my myTouch. Can get internet access, anywhere that my cell phone has reception, by tethering it with a usb cable.
GPS: It has one, but I haven't installed any navigation software yet.
Bluetooth: Has it, but havent tried it yet.
Stylus: They give you a 'pick' that is attached to a leash to use as a stylus... It is junk, grab a 2.99 stylus and be trouble free.
Virtual Keyboard: I disabled the Haptic feedback, and the battery life got even better. The keyboard is a bit clunky, but does work, and is slightly better than the usual virtual keyboard software you find on similiar devices. My only real complaint about the virtual keyboard, is when your trying to type in something and you get a drop down of suggestions, this will always block the virtual keyboard, and you have to close and reopen it. If you install Vista, you might consider using the 'Tablet PC Input' instead.
Supposedly you can re-program one of the buttons on the device, I haven't figured out how yet. There are 4 buttons and 1 joystick like button on the unit. They all support short/long keypresses, to do different actions. A short keypress on the [menu] button, brings up the start menu. a long press, allows you to use the joystick as a mouse. That is one of the coolest things they have done. You will have to use this when installing vista, as the touch screen drivers wont install until you install SP1 and SP2.
Another suggestion, change your power options so that 'Closing the lid' and 'hiting the power button' put it to sleep, instead of shutting it down. The suspend/resume speed is fantastic. Litterally 2 or 3 seconds to shut down/start up. Actual cold boot takes 5 to 10 minutes.
Overall, I have to say 'Viliv, you did an amazing job!'. If it was more expensive, i'd say 'Not sure if its worth it' but at 500 its very well worth it.... Perfect price point for it.
Only thing I would like on it, that it doesnt have... is an SDHC slot. I am a little disapointed that it doesnt have one.
Also, if you are trying to decide between this and the 600 dollar promo version, you might want the promo version. Its the exact same hardware, but they give you accesories that cant be bought in store. I had to make my own mounts using plexi, a heat gun, and a dremmel. Still havent found a decent hard case for it yet. Currently I am using a soft case that is made for a PSP... and while its a very snug fit, it does work.
Overall, I am VERY glad I made this purchase. This is, in my opinion the best on the market at this price point.

viliv N5 Series - 32GB SSD, 1.33GHz Intel Atom CPU, Windows 7 Starter Handheld MID/UMPC Review

viliv N5 Series - 32GB SSD, 1.33GHz Intel Atom CPU, Windows 7 Starter Handheld MID/UMPC
Average Reviews:

I am extremely impressed with the build quality, size and the screen. The reviews I read before purchasing mentioned that the build quality was great, but I had no idea that it would be such a rock solid device.
I've owned small computers, netbooks and even a Vaio UX 390N UMPC, but the clamshell design of the Viliv N5 makes it look like an eyeglass case, so I can slip it in and out of my pocket or just carry it by hand and it doesn't look like I'm carrying a computer around. I really feel comfortable taking this with me to any restaurant, gym or wherever and it doesn't seem awkward to have a computer with me. I'm a web developer and occasionally things happen while I'm away from the office that I need to attend to, so I used to carry my laptop with me all the time, but the straw that broke the camel's back, so-to-speak, was when I carried my laptop around Key West for a whole day and I couldn't enjoy my trip there because my back was hurting the entire time. Now, I can just slip the Viliv N5 into the pocket don't even have to think about it.
Battery life so far has been decent. 4 hours is the norm with the screen on full brightness, but I don't see reason I couldn't get 6 hours by lowering the screen brightness and turning off wifi.
The features I love about the Viliv N5 are:
- Small size (it's only an inch longer than my HTC Evo 4G phone)
- full keyboard (the keyboard is a little tricky to type on, but you can touch type if you have small fingers). I usually find it easiest to hold the N5 with both hands and thumb type.
- the thumbpad is amazing - it's very easy to move the mouse pointer around the screen - in some ways it is better than a mousepad
- the screen is bright and crisp - even though the text is small, I can see everything clearly.
- it's a full Windows 7 computer so I can install all of the programs that I use regularly with no limitations
- I thought the 32GB SSD wouldn't have enough available space left over with Windows 7 installed, but it came with 13GB free out of the box, which is more than enough for me
- Wakes up in 5 seconds from sleep
The things that are minor annoyances are:
- Boots quickly from a cold boot, but sometimes the screen doesn't come on after waking up from sleep, so I have to turn it off and back on again to get the screen to come on. This is a minor annoyance because it only happens occasionally.
- Windows 7 starter edition is really limited. I knew Windows 7 starter was a stripped down version, but I didn't realize how stripped down. Starter Edition doesn't even allow you to change your desktop background! What the? By default it will show a nice Windows background with a Windows logo, but other than that you can only change it to solid colors (black, etc). This isn't a major issue, but it sucks that I can't use a unique photo as my background image.
- Bluetooth dial up networking doesn't work consistently. I probably should blame this on Windows 7 starter too. Let me first say that I have no problems with tethering the Viliv N5 to my HTC Evo using a USB cable and then using PDANet to connect the Viliv N5 to the internet, so that's working great. However, if I want to avoid the USB cable and use Bluetooth DUN instead, I can't do it - I've only been able to get bluetooth DUN working once and it only stayed connected for a minute or two. I have no idea what's causing this, but I've never had this issue with any other computer, so it's either something with the Bluetooth drivers or it's Windows 7 starter. Either way, I'm disappointed that this isn't working because it was an important feature to me. (I can pair the Viliv N5 with my phone without any trouble; it's only the DUN that isn't working). Kind of makes me wish I'd purchased the 3G version, but I'm sure I'll eventually get this working, even if I have to upgrade to a different version of Windows 7.
- I use a Lexmark 1420 network printer and have not had any problems installing drivers for it on any other computer. However, the Viliv N5 will not recognize the printer, will not fully install the drivers, will not print a test page from my printer. Maybe there's something unique about this particular printer that Windows 7 Starter doesn't like, but whatever the issue it's definitely an annoyance that I can't get network printing working.
With all of this said, the Viliv N5 is the best UMPC I've experienced. I've been shopping for UMPCs since the first OQO was announced, so I've been in the market for something like this for the last 10 years. It's amazing to me that someone has finally created a near-perfect UMPC with all of the features I've wanted even when the trend seems to be heading to tablets, etc., there is definitely a need for a product like this.
I believe the only weak-link with the N5 is Windows 7 Starter, but this could be remedied by installing Home or Professional edition, so I'm not taking any points away from the N5 because of this.
I was on the fence about getting this for awhile; I truly thought it would be a novelty and something I would only use occasionally, but I've been carrying the N5 with me everywhere and even using it in different rooms around the house because it doesn't ever get in the way. It's definitely a computer you can take anywhere.

I have owned my N810 (affectionately named N8 - or Nate) for about 6 months now and it has become invaluable to me. These are the activities with which I use it:
- communication, using Google Voice, or Skype
- receiving and sending email, either via included email client, or web-based email
- web browsing
- watching and saving YouTube videos
- tracking and mapping via GPS unit
- taking notes
- games/entertainment with OS2008 games, or using Palm Emulator and my favorite old Palm Pilot games
- listening to music; sound quality is EXCELLENT for a hand-held (and I'm a musician, and picky)!
- recording voice notes
- taking photos and making small videos for online use
- keeping recipes; its small size make it excellent for reading in my tiny kitchen...and I can listen to music at the same time!
- reading eBooks
- text messaging via Google Voice/wifi
There are only a couple of cons that I have found so far. The front-facing camera, intended for use in video conferencing, makes photography tricky at best. This is acceptable to me, though, since it was never meant to replace a digital camera. The other is that the O/S will require a learning curve for the average point-and-click Windows user. While the device is definitely easy to pick up and use with the installed software, and loading new programs from either the Nokia website or the maemo site using the application manager, most more detailed tasks will require a certain amount of learning for most; in short, it ain't Windows :).
There are numerous other uses and apps for this device. Even after 6 months I feel I've hardly scratched the surface of its possibilities. It is always on the road with me, has replaced my laptop on weekend trips, and replaced my more cumbersome bedtime books and magazines. It has saved me money in this way, and also in cell phone/texting costs; it has already paid for itself - probably twice over.
In short, N8 has replaced both my Zune and my Palm Pilot, and become itself an irreplaceable part of my life.

Samsung Galaxy Tab (T-Mobile) Review

Samsung Galaxy Tab (T-Mobile)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
As a current iPad owner who also uses the Droid X, I must say that after spending 15 minutes with this thing I absolutely love it. The size is fantastic in that its a signifcantly improved viewing experience over the 4.3 inch Droid X screen (which is also great) and it is easy to hold with one hand and navigate with the other - an added bonus is that it also fits in a suit coat pocket.
The Microsoft Exchange integration with email/calendar/contacts is seemless and allows for almost all of the functionality provided via a laptop. One of the drawbacks of the iPad is its poor integration with Outlook (couldn't delete, move emails while one a plane working offline - not a problem with the Tab).
The screen is gorgeous, speed is quick and the Google location services (GPS, Latitude, Maps, Place and the list goes on and on) are fantastic.
I would highly recommend this product.
Update - after 1 week of ownership, I love it even more. As someone who travels (4 cities over last 5 days), I'm considering leaving my notebook home on business travel with future trips. The benefits of the form factor can't be overstated - it fits in my jeans pocket when out casually and in my suit jacket during business. It also smartly switches from WiFi to 3G when a WiFi network is not within reach and vice versa (so that you don't unnecessarily consume data via your cellular carrier). I also watched a movie on my East to West coast trip - 3 hour and 13 minute move burned less than half the battery time. It's also great to be able to modify .xls documents when needed - seamless integration with outlook / attachments.
Absolutely love this thing...

T-Mobile ServicesT-Mobile Pay As You Go Prepaid Service
T-Mobile prepaid plans give you wireless access with less commitment, so you can pay as you go. With no annual contract, no credit check, and no monthly bill, prepaid plans are a simple, direct way to go mobile. There are many ways to conveniently refill your T-Mobile Prepaid Plan so that you can stay continually connected with the people who matter most, including via the T-Mobile Web site or using refill cards available at over 90,000 locations nationwide. You can choose from either a monthly postpaid plan (which includes convenient Wi-Fi Hotspot access) or prepaid plans that provide smaller set amounts of data usage.

High-Speed Data Connectivity via T-Mobile's 3G Network
In addition to its quad-band GSM connectivity, this mobile device is also compatible with T-Mobile's UMTS/HSDPA 3G network, which operates on the 1700/2100 MHz AWS spectrum. This mobile device is designed to automatically connect to the best available network (3G or GSM/GPRS/EDGE) to provide faster data speeds when accessing the Web.

In areas where the 3G network is not available, you'll continue to receive service on the via T-Mobile's EDGE network (which stands for "Enhanced Data Rates for Global Evolution"). This high-speed, mobile data and Internet access technology is fast enough to support a wide range of advanced data services (with average data speeds between 75-135Kbps), including full picture and video messaging, high-speed color Internet access, and e-mail on the go.

T-Mobile's New, Expanding Super-Fast HSPA+ Network
As of June, 2010, T-Mobile has upgraded its traditional 3G network to HSPA+ in 25 major metropolitan areas across the U.S., and it plans to continue rolling out this network upgrade to over 100 metropolitan cities and up to 185 million people by the end of 2010. HSPA+ provides our fastest data speeds, up to 3 times faster than AT&T and Verizon's standard 3G networks, while allowing simultaneous voice and data capabilities for the ultimate wireless voice and data experience.

HSPA+ enabled areas will enjoy 4G-like speeds, with a theoretical capability of up to 21 Mbps peak download speeds (and typical download speeds averaging between 5 and 8 Mbps).

While this 3G-enabled mobile device doesn't offer HSPA+ compatibility, it can benefit from enhanced speeds when connecting to the HSPA+ network today.

Archos 43 - 16 GB Internet Tablet (Black) Review

Archos 43 - 16 GB Internet Tablet (Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a video demo and testing of the Archos 43 - 16 GB Internet Tablet. Overall, I am very happy with its improvements over the Archos 5 IT. I have also changed the rating to a 5 stars after updating the OS to Android 2.2 with the Adobe Flash 10 player installed. This gadget rocks !
12/21/10 update
- I have been using this gadget on a daily basis since my original post for checking emails and surfing the web for news in the morning while still lying lazy on my bed. So far so good and it has replaced my iPhone for such use as it is lighter and has a wider display for full web-site surfing. The only issue I have is the short battery life which I have to circumvent by disabling the Wifi when not in use.
Overall feel and handling
The unit is extremely light and fits easily in a shirt pocket. It is much more portable than the Archos 5 IT and even the i-Phone. The single-touch resistive screen works quite nice also. I also noticed that the camera has a small clear plaster cover on it which should be removed for better recording.
OS and applications
12/01/10 Update
- Updated OS to Android 2.2 ! This gadget is a lot more stable and works faster after the update. We would need to reinstall the latest Google Marketplace app from the Archos fans site as the previous version does not work with Android 2.2. The Adobe Flash 10 player would also needed to be installed (from the Google Market place) in order to view flash videos from the websites.
Archos 5 used to have an application called Thinkfree office installed which allowed us to view PDF, excel, and word document. I am not able to find this same application on the Archos 43. However, this application and the Adobe viewer could be downloaded from the Google Markletplace. Do some research on the Archosfans website and you would be able to get the instructions on installing the Marketplace app.
Video and display
The display is very nice and sharp. In the demo video, I also showed a side-by-side comparison between an i-Phone and the Archos 43. The display area for the Archos 43 is 32% larger than an iPhone. Whereas the Archos 5 IT has a 65% larger display area over the iPhone with its 4.8" screen. Even though the display area is not much larger than the iPhone, the viewing experience is notably different. The video camera recording is of average quality. It does OK in well lighted area but the video is pretty grainy under poor lighting conditions. I also found some issues with the Amazon's Kindle viewer. The right side text was chopped off by the menu bar.
Sound
The external speaker is much better than the Archos 5 IT and produced much more sound in comparison.
WiFi and internet connection
There are major improvements in the Wifi connection as I experienced no trouble connecting the WiFi to my home wireless network. This was the most annoying problem I had with the Archos 5 IT.
Batteries
Charge time is much better than the Archos 5 IT. Took about 2-3 hours for a full charge. It lasts for about 2-3 hours of constant uses. If we leave the Wifi on, it seems to drain the battery charge rather rapidly. I did another benchmark testing by playing only video with the external speaker at 50% volume. It ran for a good 6-7 hours on a full charge.
It uses a standard micro-USB cable for connection to the PC.
Overall, I am quite pleased with this gadget particularly its light weight and larger screen size than my iPhone.

Pepper Pad 3 Handheld Web Computer (Black) Review

Pepper Pad 3 Handheld Web Computer (Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Pros far outweight the cons.
Device is pitched as "a/v streaming tablet" for kitchen, bedroom, living room, etc. It MORE than delivers on this promise. Email and some bluetooth support is currently lacking (only wireless mouse/keybd currently supported) but this will be fixed soon.
Skype is coming in next few months. Big win there.
Hardware feature:
1. 2-way infrared learning remote.
It's now my primary remote control. Layout are fairly editable but not where it s/be...this is easily fixable though. Unlike what other reviews stated...it is easy to incorporate support for new devices...you can download remote control config files from lirc.org.
2. Backlit keypad
Nice for being in bed at night.
3. d-pad and thumbwheel
Absolutely best way to scroll/page thru sites.
4. 2xUSB, 1xNTSC A/V out
An MMC/SD would be nice...but expandability is there already.
5. 20GB HD and 256MB RAM
As an engr geek...I would like to see more...but for a/v streaming and other tasks this is totally adequate.
6. i386 compatible
This means you can just download RedHat FC4 i386 binaries and they just work. They may not integrate with desktop perfectly...but works great nonetheless.Software features:
1. Streams darn near EVERY video/audio format. Only esoteric realplayer sites don't work...yet. Everything else (Sirius Satellite, Shoutcast) work flawlessly.
2. Built-in email sucks...but I easily downloaded Thunderbird and it is now where I want it to be.
3. Desktop (tabbed folder) paradigm needs some development...but it is fine for intended tasks (streaming a/v).
4. Support for Java 1.5!! This only means something to geeks and those wanting to stream from sites which have applets (Sirius Satellite). As a java developer...this is just too cool. First time J2SE is on pda form factor.
This is an awesome device that I've been using daily since purchase. I have since CANCELLED my several newspaper subscriptions as I now read/stream from pad....this saves me just under $1K yearly for subscriptions.
The device is so versatile and perfectly sized...you will soon want to take it in car with you and mount it on dash with bluetooth gps, etc. With enhanced bt support coming...you'll soon be doing just that!

USB 2.0 connectivity makes it a snap to connect the Pepper Pad 3 to your PC for data transfer, while infrared capabilities let you easily control and access any number of TVs, set-top boxes, CD players, and other A/V devices. The Pepper Pad 3 also comes with some other great connectivity options, including a headphone jack, component video out, and a microphone-in port.

eLocity A7 Touchscreen 7-Inch Android 2.2 Tablet (Black) Review

eLocity A7 Touchscreen 7-Inch Android 2.2 Tablet (Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
First off, I'll apologize for writing a review after owning this tablet for only one night. I hate these kinds of reviews but I felt this needed at least one review from a real customer.
In my few hours with it last night, I downloaded and installed several apps on it from GetJar, including Facebook and Kindle. I also downloaded several apps from my PC onto a thumb drive and installed them onto the tablet from that, which was very cool. I visited several websites that had flash banners and they worked flawlessly. I was also able to play embedded videos on sites including youtube.com and my facebook news stream.
Pros:
- USB port - I plugged an 8GB flash drive in and installed apps from it.
- Micro SD slot - Haven't used it yet but plan to soon
- HDMI port - Haven't used this yet either but it's a great option
- Video looks great
- Very responsive when touching links or rotating display
- Browser is quick and displays flash
- Great price for the specs
Cons:
- Lack of good, working apps. For the A7, you get your apps from GetJar, instead of the Android marketplace. Some apps refused to install for me, like Angry Birds. Others installed but clearly weren't made to work on this size tablet. There isn't a netflix or skype app available (I was hoping to use the webcam with skype).
- Pinch-to-zoom doesn't work particularly well. Seemed to always go way too far in or out. You're better off just double-tapping.
- Scrolling - scrolling by sliding my finger seems to cause a lot of unintended clicks along the way. I think there's just a bit of a learning curve, being used to my ipod touch. It seemed to happen less as the night went on.
- The fixed buttons aren't backlit so at first it's difficult to use in the dark. You quickly figure out where they are and it's not that big a deal
- So far it's been hard to find any cases or accessories built for the A7
- I wasn't able to set up my yahoo mail in the default mail client. Instead, I installed the yahoo mail app, which is basically a shortcut to the mobile yahoo mail site, which works fine.
This purchase was for my wife, who wanted something like an iPad but at a size that fit in her purse. This is almost the exact same size as my 2nd generation Kindle (a little thicker). So far she's used it to quickly check and respond to things on Facebook, check emails and surf the web. Because of the speed and ease of use, it should supplant most of her laptop use, with the exception of sending long emails and working on speadsheets.
I trust there will be more and better apps for android tablets in the near future. It looks like there are A LOT of similar tablets hitting the market now. For me, this tablet looked like the best specs for the best price right now and I imagine it will be even more fun to use as new apps are made for it.

Archos 70 - 8 GB Internet Tablet (Black) Review

Archos 70 - 8 GB Internet Tablet (Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've had this device for 6 days and I've been very pleased with all aspects of it. I did a lot of research before buying and it has met all of my expectations. Best for those who already have some experience with the Android operating system.
Here is what I like:
It makes an excellent e-reader. I can use books from Barnes and Noble, Borders, Amazon, Google and my local library. It is a great PDF document reader and works great for comics as well.
It is very good internet browser. Flash capability isn't perfect yet, but having it in even a limited capacity opens up a lot more of the internet. I've been an iPod Touch/iPhone user for several years and I really like this device. The internet experience is superior.
Google integration. If you use Gmail and google apps, Android offers better capabilities than iOS devices. (Note, this does require a hack, but it is very easy to do).
Expandability. MicroSD, HDMI, USB. Archos doesn't control what I can and cannot do with this device.
Video playback. Excellent playback of local, network and internet video.
Form factor. I've played with an iPad and it's a fun device, but I like the size/weight of this device a lot better. It is more practical and easy to take with me. Much easier to hold for long periods of time when reading.
Battery life. Not iPad levels, but still very good.
What I don't like:
Future ability to upgrade. By only putting in 256MB of RAM, they have limited the ability of this device to Android 2.2, which means I will probably want the 2011 version, instead of upgrading this one. (I think they planned this)
Hacking is necessary. Because of limitations that Google puts on Android currently, it is necessary to hack the device to access it's full potential. This will ultimately damage the ability of new/inexperienced users to enjoy their Archos tablets.
Overall, I love this device and if you have used Android or if you are willing to do some research on websites like archosfans.com, you will love it as well!

I own a G Tablet. I like my G Tablet. Let me tell you why no-one is raving about the G Tablet.
The electronics exceed the iPad at time of writing. The form factor is nothing to write home about. The viewing angles on the screen are sub-par, which is surprising given the device's provenance. The Tap n' Tap user interface is a disaster. I say again, a disaster. Slow, inelegant, and insufficient.
There is good news. First, the price is right. It can be had for as little as $380.00, a far cry from its competitors. Second, the user interface can be replaced. There are communities of individuals (XDA), who have very graciously put their hard work and talent into producing replacement ROMs for this device which override the existing software with something that is much closer to the standard Android OS and that interfaces correctly with the Android App Market. It is DIY, roll-up-your-sleeves-and-dig-into-it work to install a new ROM and get it running properly. Even then there will be charming bugs to fix. Expect this to become a minor hobby.
In conclusion, the G Tablet is a conditionally five-star device. It is inexpensive, the hardware is perfectly solid, and a technically minded individual who is willing to spend some time tinkering with it can turn it into a very useful tool.
If you are Viewsonic, or work for Viewsonic, or know somebody who's cousin might work at Viewsonic, then please tell them; ditch Tap n' Tap as soon as humanly possible.
