Brother MFC-8420 Laser Multifunction Review

I went through a slew of hp printers. I experienced lousy, "outsourced" technical support, and had two printers fail in the same year. This on the heels of my friends brand new color laser fiasco, which was three failures in one year (also HP). They used to be the best, with printers like the 4050n and other tireless workhorses, but I think other vendors are now making significant inroads, especially in this middle ground space. You'll find HP laser printers to be profoundly expensive for what they buy, with high print costs, and low ram. The 1300 is a fine example of where HP has gone wrong.
So, we took the plunge on this 8420 (we got the "one up" D model, which includes duplexing -- works like a charm, and at about 1c a page (as the cost of paper) it will pay for itself quickly).
The upsides:
1) Very cheap toner. Especially the high yield. 6k pages for 90 bucks, which is more than any other cartridge we could find (and you get get those cheaper than 90 some places)
2) Very convenient. You've no idea how awesome a 50 page sheetfed scanner with OCR actually is until you need it. ;-)
3) Comes with a full toner cartridge. My hp's came with 1/2 full "intro" ones.
4) Best-of-breed. For it's downsides (below), it really is the best you can buy for the money.
5) It doesn't jam.
The downsides are:
1) It's a little slow to copy
2) High end color scans are not that hot. A little flat. If you want high end color scans, drop 60 bucks and buy a Scanjet 5300c. The scanner is really designed for document processing, at which it excels.
3) It's a little pricey to buy in. The high end models are overpriced for what they buy (duplexing for ~100 bucks, network for another 100-150). Yikes.
4) The software is a little "clunky", but it works
5) The warranty pretty much stinks (1 year). If you can get an extended warranty, it's a [really] good idea. With so many components, all-in-ones have that much more of a chance to fail, and they do. ;-)
Remember, inkjet printers are sold practically at a loss by their manufacturers (especially cheaper ones). They are designed to make up their money in ink cartridges. This is important when you are comparing all-in-ones.
Despite it's minor downsides, I'd highly reccomend this ot a friend. If you need something to get your business off the ground like we did, and don't want to spend a fortune or worry about being in constant IT mode keeping everything configured and working smoothly, this is the way to go. Faxing is a breeze, scanning is easy (50 docs at a time is a LOT btw), and printing is very high quality.
We combined this with a cheap bubblejet, and now we have the best of all possible worlds. We reccomend this route!!!

I run a home office and am a heavy user of printing, scanning, faxing and copying. This unit replaced an old copier and an older printer/fax.
Installation gave me error messages. My system does have a lot of software and drivers on a WinXP Pro SP2 operating system. I was able to manually get the drivers installed. No, I didn't have the patience to call Brother.
Function in all modalities is superb. Text print quality and speed are excellent. Graphics are good.
Copying and fax work like a charm, both sheetfed and flatbed.
I compared the color scanning against my Epson 2450 Photo scanner. For routine scanning, I prefer the Brother. If I need to tweak a scan, I'll use the Epson. That's a pretty good recommendation!
I can highly recommend this product (with the one installation caution). Others have not reported install problems and I suspect this was my fairly complex system.
If you need a laser based AIO, by all means give this a try!

Canon Pixma MX850 Office All-In-One Inkjet Printer (2436B002) Review

Canon Pixma MX850 Office All-In-One Inkjet Printer (2436B002)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
My brief observations seem to indicate that the MX850 really doesn't improve upon the MP830 in some important areas.
I've owned the Canon MP830 for almost a year and and I just bought the Canon MX850 for a friend, so this is a direct user comparison. The 830 has been 100% reliable, producing excellent scans, prints, copies, and faxes. The MX850 is shorter in height, but otherwise just as bulky and heavy as the 830. Canon seems to be using a less robust scanner in the 850 than in the older MP830. Scans on the 830 are consistently over 4 times as fast: a 300 dpi 8.5x11" import scan into Photoshop CS3 took about 7 seconds with the 830 and about 33 seconds with the 850. The 830 wins in the noise category as well: it's roughly 60% quieter than the 850 when scanning. The 850 produces an annoying high pitched tone while the 830 has more of a low "murmer" sound. The 850, to be fair, will not be considered to be overly loud for most environments. With scanning, the color reproduction seems fairly close between the two machines, though I'm getting more color accuracy from the 830. Copies on the 830 produced more accurate colors, too: a copy of a TIME magazine cover on a matt photo paper (with settings set to "Matt Photo Paper" and "High") yielded extremely accurate reproductions of the original, while the the 850 veered too far toward the yellow end of the spectrum. Both produced excellent detail, though. Scans of dot-screen images were well rendered with the 830, while the 850 exhibited substantial moire effects.
Not sure about energy consumption comparisons though the 850's scanner seems to be using a more compact, (newer technology?) low lumens light-producing element than the very bright 830, so it probably uses less power.
Both machines will not disappoint, but with the advantage of my brief side-by-side comparison I'd recommend that you save $40 bucks and get the MP830. They both use the same ink cartridges. One last observation: the 850's LCD screen has a much higher pixel count, but that's only one small improvement amid the 830's superior traits.
3/18/2008 - Update: I've learned that the MX850 is using "contact image sensor" technology (CIS) where as the MP830 is using the more common "charged-coupled devices" (CCD) technology. For those with an interest in the tech aspects I've included some info I found online:
"Most of large format scanners in use today use CCD (charge-coupled devices) as the primary data capture element in their construction. Recently this position has started to be challenged by the lower cost CIS (contact image sensor) technologies, which have come mainly from the small flatbed scanner market. The traditional CCD or camera scanner is able to produce a very high number of colours from the scanned original and copes with folded documents reasonably well. These scanners tend to be preferred where the image to be scanned is either photographic or has extensive use of tones and shading. CIS scanners have the advantage in providing all the optics in a space of 20 mm or so, which in the CCD scanner equivalent would occupy more like 600 mm. The secondary advantage is that CIS scanners have no need for magnification, lenses or a rigid frame - a major saving in construction costs and weight. However, CIS scanners do not do so well when scanning very pale colours or photographs."

Canon PIXMA MP800 All In One Photo Printer Review

Canon PIXMA MP800 All In One Photo Printer
Average Reviews:

I purchased the mp800 to replace my Lexmark X-85 "INK GOBBLER" because I got tired of not being able to refill the ink successfully and paying through the nose for replacement ink cartridges. The Lex X-85 was over three years old and I was ready for a better printer that new technology had to offer.
I am very pleased with the MP800. It's printing quality and speed is excellent for this caliber of printer. Most of the photos I have printed are on "Jet Print" professional photo paper which has worked well. I have yet to purchase some Canon Photo Paper Pro and try it. I did however print one 4x6 photo from the included pack of Canon Photo Paper Pro that came with the printer. The photo quality was amazing!
Regarding the refilling of the ink cartridges: I purchased the 5 ink refill kit from re-inks.com for $60.00. the kit has enough ink for about 12 refills of per cartridge.
The printer is smart enough to know that you are using refilled ink cartridges but it allows you to continue with a warning that Canon may not be responsible for damage.
once you get past the warning the printer asks you to press the stop/reset button for 5 seconds and the printer will continue to print using the refilled cartridge but when you view the Ink Status Monitor it shows the ink tank level as empty.
So in the future you will have to manually remove the cartridge to view it's ink quality. This is easy to do because Canon's ink tanks are Clear Plastic!
This simple reset procedure is required each time the printer detects a refilled cartridge. I suspect that once all 5 cartridges have been "released" from ink detection, it might not ask you again to go through the reset process again. I haven't got there yet. Thanks canon for leaving the Ink Refill Door Open! Hope this info helps. Scott

The advanced PIXMA MP800 Photo All-In-One delivers spectacular Print Copy-Scan performance. It produces an amazing resolution of up to 9,600 x 2,400 color dpi, for remarkable detail and clarity. To achieve this, Canon Full-photolithography Inkjet Nozzle Engineering (FINE) uses a next-generation 3,584-nozzle print head that ejects precise, consistent droplets as small as one picoliter. The result? Smoother, virtually grain-free images. Also, our ContrastPLUS five-color ink system--four dye-based inks and a pigment-based black ink--produces true-life photos with a wide color palette, along with laser-quality text. What about speed? A 4"x 6" photo lab quality borderless photo takes approximately 36 seconds.
When copying, the AE (Auto Exposure) Copy feature automatically optimizes reproduction quality based on the type of original you're duplicating. The convenient Photo/Film buttons allow you to make reprints of your photos and 35mm film without using your computer. And now, scanning: The unit's higher-resolution CCD technology enables you to produce exceptional 2,400-dpi scans, with vibrant 48-bit color depth. You can simultaneously scan up to six frames of 35mm film (negatives or positives), or up to four mounted slides. Plus, advanced paper handling features are built in - such as two paper trays and two-sided printing.
Want to evaluate and enhance your images before printing? Just insert your compatible memory card into one of the built-in card slots, then select the images on the extra-large 3.5" LCD color viewer. As needed, images will be automatically enhanced for red eye, sharpness and brightness values, or you can fine tune the images yourself using the easy control panel. Then, print directly from the memory card! As an option, you can print directly from a PictBridge-ready device such as a digital camera.
The Canon ChromaLife100 system combines the PIXMA MP800 Photo All-In-One's FINE print head technology and newly developed inks with select Canon photo papers, with results rivaling that of many conventional photos. And with the new smart LED ink tanks, your LED lamp flashes when ink is running low, and flashes even faster when nearing empty.
What's in the Box: PIXMA MP800 Photo All-in-One, PIXMA MP800 print head, ink tanks: PGI-5Bk Black, CLI-8 (black, cyan, magenta, yellow), power cord, easy setup instructions, documentation kit, Canon Photo Paper Pro for Borderless Printing 4" x 6" sample pack

Brother MFC-8860DN Flatbed Laser All-in-One Printer with Duplex Review

Brother MFC-8860DN Flatbed Laser All-in-One Printer with Duplex
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought the 8860DN a couple weeks ago to replace my aging HP 3330. While I'm quite happy with much of the 8860DN, there are a few things that could use improvement. Some of these can be addressed in software, others I fear are hardware issues.
BTW, I'm on my second machine because I thought some of the issues with the first warranted a replacement. Now I know its a "common" issue.
1) The print engine creaks and makes popping sounds as the fuser heats and cools. Even the demo machine in Office Depot does the same thing. The creaking is really annoying if you sit near the machine. A Brother senior tech rep tells me this issue is common to many Brother lasers. Well, gimme a break because HP and others don't creak! **UPDATE** Brother Corporate office tells me the popping sounds are considered "normal" by the engineers and at this time they have no plans to fix. Pathetic if you ask me. I think most users will agree!!!
2) The scanner ADF head will sometimes make odd sounds when its scanning the last page of a multi-page scan. It sounds as if the motor or gears need lubrication.
3) I've had the COPY function lockup on me a couple times (other fucntions continue to work) and the only way to correct is to power cycle. Cause is unknown but the clowns at Brother support tell me to keep power cycling the resolve the problem. IDIOTS!
4) The IFAX feature is not very well explained and is somewhat odd in the way it works (or tries to work). I've yet to really figure it out. As an alternative I use the FAX FORWARD TO EMAIL function which works well.
5) A PC software bug: When scanning multiple pages its impossible to multitask since the scanner interface takes the focus away from whatever you are doing everytime it begins scanning a new page. Brother apparently knows about this issue and will correct in the next software version.
Other than the above isues, I'm fairly satisfied in the short time I've been using this MFC. If I may comment in response to one of the previous reviews, the beep sound is adjustable and I believe if the user took the time to read the manual, he'd be quite happy with the level of customization available on this machine (I rarely hear of people complaining about too many features). Oh, and yes as stoneaged as it sounds, some people still do occasionally receive faxes.
As far as I'm concerned, the print speed is excellent. Even complex pages print quickly with nearly no delay between pages. A huge improvment over my old HP. Also, I find the scan speed on non complex scans to be excellent. Complex and high res scans are somewhat slower, but they are with many scanners (and certainly about every multifucntion I've run across). Print duplexing is another very nice touch and I'm surprised it works as well as it does. The 8860DN gets the job done and it does them well overall.
Things about the 8860DN I prefer over the new HP 3390 I compared it to.
1) 8860 has a legal size scan plate
2) 8860 will fax forward to email
3) 8860 is $150 less with approx. the same cost per page in consumables.
4) 8860 does duplex scan, copy

Canon Pixma MP520 Photo All-On-One Inkjet Printer (2178B002) Review

Canon Pixma MP520 Photo All-On-One Inkjet Printer (2178B002)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
It has both front and rear paper feeders. I can load two types of papers and/or envelops and select the source either with a button or through computer. This is the very best part. What I hate about HP printers: they all have only front feeder. Because front-fed papers must go a 180 degree sharp turn around, they are never able to do trouble-free envelop and double-side printing. Prints always miss top or bottom, because paper is fed either too fast or too slow, absolutely no consistency. If you print large international mailing labels/forms, you know what I mean. Paper jam is your routine with HP. Canon has no such problems at all, at least with its rear feeder.
It uses 4 separated ink cartridges for all 4 colors. With those 3-in-one cartridges, I was always scared to print graphics, because one color always went faster and the entire cartridge must be thrown away. Now I can just replace a single color and I can physically see ink level!!! Even better, these cartridges are very easy to refill. I must admit that the color cartridges popped out by themselves and I think I'll call Canon like the other reviewer. With HP, cartridges are built with print headers, making them very expensive, difficult to refill and, if doable, for few times only before the printer head got clogged and must be replaced.
More expensive Canon all-in-one, such as MP530, MP830 and MX700, are all way too huge! This one is still quite big compared to printer-only models, but I still can put it on my desktop fine. Because it is not so tall and has a flat top, I can put my stationary plate on it; so it is big but does not waste the space.
Cheaper Canon AIO, such as MX300 and MP470, all use the stupid cartridges like HP and you'll pay much more on ink! Before you buy a printer, make sure it uses at least 4 individual cartridges. For Canon current models, it means "8" series cartridges (CLI-8C/M/Y).
I can't list all the good points, just these are enough: only $110, lowest cost on ink, rear feeder (& front!) and not huge. It does all the things for me and it does them all well at the lowest cost. For some people, what it does not do: fax and CD/DVD printing (only for special and more expensive blank disks).
The very similar MP610 can print CD/DVD with an optional CD tray that you can buy from eBay or make your own. MP610 uses one more extra ink, a dye black for color printing for better contrast. MP520 uses only one pigmented black ink that's good for water resistance but slightly less ideal than dye ink for photos. Overall, MP610 produces doubled resolutions over MP520, which really does not matter to me as MP520's resolutions are already superb and it's 4 lb lighter, slightly smaller and $100 less than MP610 and one less ink tank to deal with.
MP610 can also do automatic duplexing while this MP520 can do it manually only. Auto duplex is very cool, but it is very slow compared to manual duplex, so you may end up seldom use it and miss nothing with a MP520.
So, if you do lots of top-quality photo and/or CD/DVD printing, then go with the MP610. If you need fax, add a MX300 just for that function for only $58 from Walmart; don't buy the MP530 etc. - they are huge! If you don't print much, MX300 is the one and the only one you need. Otherwise, stay with MP520. In any case, never go HP. Don't go Epson neither because their integrated printer heads (non-removable) tend to clog and no way to replace or fix. If a Cannon printer head (removable) gets clogged, you can easily take it out and clean it with a bottle of compressed air. I know what I'm talking about.

I moved up to this printer from an (excellent) Magicolor 3100 printer.
My basic requirements were large format printing (11x17), cover paper
handling, color, speed and duplexing. The printer arrived palleted.
First, the printer is very heavy, and two of us had difficulty setting
it up. I would almost recommend a lift table to handle it. I plan to
get the high capacity feeder both for the extra trays, and also for a
way to get it around, since it is really to heavy to lift without a
dolly or other aid. The HCF has wheels on it, and basically converts
the printer to a roll around waist height machine.
The C9650 is a LED printer, meaning that it uses a bar of LEDs to do
the same job as a rotating laser. This both gives it both less rotating
parts as well as simpler mechanics. The bar has 66000 leds (600x11"),
and there are four of them, one for each color. There is a version of
this printer with 1200x1200 resolution, which means a LED bar with
twice the number of LEDs, but the price increment is more than the cost
of this printer at almost $4000 (yikes!). The odd sounding 1200x600
resolution of the c9650 printer comes from the fact that although the
LED spacing is fixed, the modulation of the LEDs across the width of
the paper can be increased to 1200 dots per inch easily.
Oki is one of the few makers of pure LED driven printers. I have no idea
why LED based printers have not taken over the market due to the
advantages of this type of print head. Possibly it is just far cheaper
to make scanning heads than LED bars.
The first comparision was to my older 3100 printer, which claims
1200x1200 print resolution against the C96450's 1200x600. There was no
contest, the C9650 was far clearer and sharper than the 3100 on photos
I fed both. In addition, the C9650 produced far less paper curl than
the 3100, a fact I attribute to the simpler paper path of the C9650.
In fact, the C9650 produced copy that was virtually flat. I was
impressed. Low curl is important in my one-off binding application.
The other reason I chose this printer was because it can print cover
stock without complaint (gsm 300 or better). This is due to the ability
of the printer to both input and output such thick material directly
from the sides of the printer with (as the brochure says) almost a
perfectly straight printer path. This also be attributed to the
printers simplified LED print path, but to be fair there are other
non-LED printers that can do this. I use the ability to print covers
to feed a one-off perfect binding operation with a BQ-140 binder and a
Triumph paper cutter. The C9650 will (according to the brochure) also
accept longer than 17" material, which will be essential for 8.5x11"
binds, because of the 1-2" of spine needed at the back of the book.
All in all, so far this is shaping up to be an outstanding printer. The
few negatives I had were the fact that the printer was shipped with the
wrong toner cartridges in the box (they fixed it quicky and said it
has happened before, but it says something about quality control at
Oki), and a salesman at Oki who told me that this printer is considered
a low volume item at Oki, to be discontinued.
The 11x17 market needs this kind of printer. I notice that other
companies, including Xerox, are reselling this printer. One maker is
even marketing it as a "super thick" stock printer (they may modify it
for this purpose). The bottom line is that this is a workhorse printer
able to do jobs that other printers cannot. The large format market is
new, neglected in my opinion, and the large format market with thick
stock ability is only a handfull of machines.

I purchased this printer for our small office, of 14 people, 8 months ago and have been really surprised with its dependability and performance. We use many of it's features on a daily basis: scan-to-email, duplex printing, faxing and copying, and couldn't be more satisfied with its performance. I setup speed dials for everyone in the group through the printer's easy to use web browser interface, so now by only pressing 3 buttons, a document can be color duplex-scanned and emailed to anyone in the group in a matter of seconds. Before I purchased this printer, I was a devoted HP user, and originally purchased the comparable HP CM3530fs, but after waiting 6 months for that machine and dealing with horrible customer service, I decided to give Brother a chance. For a quarter of the original price of the HP CM3530fs, the Brother MFC 9840 CDW can do everything the HP can with the exception of stapling; and I certainly don't find a built in stapler worth the extra $2100 and hassle that comes along with the HP.

Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
When I picked the Z3200ps 44" printer is was for these reasons:
1 - I wanted a pigment printer in the lab for long archive prints
2 - I needed a wide color gamut and the Z3200 ps really knocks it out of the park
3 - I like b&w photos but hate it when they turn green or yellow with age
4 - havng used 24" rolls, some charts outgrew them to 36" and finally 44" rolls
5 - media handling. Careful when you walk by this printer. It will pull your shirt off and print on it.
I've had some time to get to know the Z3200ps. It has a buit in rip and 80g disk to store your image once ripped so subsequent prints on various media are a no brainer. I bought an assortment of media from photo paper to banner paper and finally canvas which really made an impression.
The 2100 and 3200 printers use 130ml inks (but HP ships it with 69ml mini-inks like the mini-bar in a hotel). They get it calibrated and alligned but 50% of the ink is gone aftertwards. Fortunately a 20x24 canvas (heavy ink) print only used 3ml from the 1500 ml on board in 12 cartridges.
Yes thats right. 12 ink colors. Well really 11 because the gloss enhancer is clear! And it DOESN'T HAVE CYAN - JUST LIGHT CYAN. It does have magenta and light magenta. Let's cover the 12 inks
CMYPKMK:
c50% dark cyan
Mfull dark magenta
m- 50% dark magenta
Yfull dark Yellow
PK"photo black" - mixes with cmy above to avoid using cmy when dark colors are in photos. doesn't fade away from black
MK Matte black - for text mainly - shows up as matte on glossy media
RGB
GrGreen 100%
BlBLUE (not to be confused with cyan dark - it's not really blue either, more purple than blue)
RdChromatic Red (think fire engine / fast sports cars here)
B&W
LG Light Grey
GGrey (combined with photo black gives you 3 color b&w prints with no color in them - no "off black"
EGloss [E]nhancer - prevents bronzing
Now add them c, M, m, y, PK, MK, Rd, Gn, Bl, Grey, light Grey, Gloss enhancer. Yep even dozen.
You'll be happy to know the gloss enhancer, while sprayed everywhere, is only $55 instead of $78, but a full refill is $911 of all 12 carts. buying ink here on amazon will save you money over hp's price
As for printheads, yes, nozzles clog, yes, there is a cleaning step, and best of all, it knows what nozzles are clogged so with 2000+ It can average them out of the picture and prevent banding until it gets really bad. Each printhead has 2 colors assigned to it, and they are about $55. Now you can also clean just one printhead instead of all 6 of them which saves ink. Left plugged in, the printer automatically runs a periodic nozzle cleaning with minimal waste to keep them clean.
Color calibration is done with an i1 spectrophotometer for the material you are using. Tell your software to let the printer manage color and send adobe rgb 1998 to it. Then tell the printer it's getting adobe 1998 and it must mix and match. It will take a little from each color to make [carl sagan on] billions of colors.
The color gamut of this printer is only missing the metalics (a 13th cartridge would be too much), so you get accurate reproduction. It also comes with a monitor calibration system so what you see is what you get across many media.
The biggest surprise so far was the $1.28/sq ft matt universal canvas. Go for heavy inking and you'd swear an artist slaved all day to render your 12 megapixel dslr raw digtital negative into a painting. I have a roll of 24" canvas loaded now and am going to try some art reproduction with it and a scanner. You also have options to roll on clear sealer (acrylic) or use a brush and acrylic paints to turn the canvas into a real work of art.
If 44" and 12 inks isn't enough HP does make a 60" carriage, but sacrificed the 12 inks down to 8.
CONS:
Here they are
8" of each roll is needed for each new load to do a color calibration (and 20 minutes give or take)
high quality mode is slow as molassas to print
internal cutter can't cut canvas.
Carriage may be 44" but you have 6 bottles of ink on *each* side of that so the printer is wide.
postscript rip is kinda on the slow side but the good news is it keeps the finished jobs in the printers hard disk until you delete them, so you can improve your media choices without another rip and just print.
only has roll or sheetfeed - one sheet at a time. DJ130nr had a paper try, rear feed, front feed, and roll feed that could automatically take out the roll and feed from the paper tray, then revert to roll without a human.
power cords are shorter than the printer is long so be prepared.
squirt and wipe after 3 - 4 passes slows printing while carriage is in service station
Hard to find HP 70 130 ml carts in every color on [...] website - must dig around. Red is no. 73
"chromatic red" which makes me wonder about other no 73 carts
won't take the 300 ml #70 carts for the 5200 (besides wrong colors)
Plus side
Comes with GB ethernet and usb. The GB net is *NICE*
As of 7-2010 HP finally got win 7 to work with this printer. Took long enough. I had to revert to vista when I got this (ugh) and was changing o/s more often than people change underware.
Lots of space to store caibrations for medias you come across
Heavy support for fine art media
Comes with $300 stand in kit and adapters for different core sizes
comes with power cords for every country on earth
200 watts printing, almost nothing in power down mode. Adjustable delay to enter power down.
Nice b&w lcd on front for loading paper and calibrating color
orange cancel button
relatively easy to fix skew problems with the blue lever that opens up the gripper and allignment marks
To sum it up - with the introduction of the Z5200, my bet is the z3200 will drop in price soon and might make a good value then. The 5200 only uses 8 inks and is built on the same chassis as the 3200. Since the 3200 mixes from all 12 inks almost equally you get good life from 12 cartridges. Add to your watched list and watch the price drop - the 5200 was just introduced as I write this.

After getting a Macbook Air and finding out that my HP OfficeJet 845xi was not supported (what does that say about HP), I decided to buy a Brother MFC-8680DN and what a pleasant surprise -- I took it out the box, plugged it in and it worked, no questions asked. Recently, I changed my network and it caused problems connecting to my MAC laptop -- I called Brother and got brilliant support and what a pleasant surprise -- they directed my support call to a tech specialist that specialized in both Brother and Apple -- what a pleasant surprise -- HP is done selling me printers.

Epson Discproducer PP-100 Review

Epson Discproducer PP-100

I searched for quite a while to find a disc publisher I could rely on. So many of the products on the market have reliability or quality issues. The Epson PP-100 has been a great product. There have been a couple of bad discs, but the printer actually marks them as bad and continues working until it has produced the number of discs you specified. The on-disc printing quality is excellent, too.

Epson's Discproducer is the advanced desktop publisher from MediaSupply.com you can rely on with its high performance, fast throughput and top reliability. It is designed for unattended operation and can burn and print up to 100 discs at a speed of up to 30 CDs or 15 DVDs per hour. And it has all the features you need to get the job done. Discproducer features a built-in inkjet printer with Epson's patented MicroPiezo technology. Using six colors, it delivers the highest print quality in its class with clear, crisp text and vibrant graphics. And it offers high-capacity cartridges plus individual LEDs for each ink cartridge to alert you when the ink level is low. Discproducer's robotic arm with patented AcuGripTM technology ensures that only one disc is placed in the drive or printer at a time, eliminating dual feeding that can damage the drives and interrupt unsupervised production runs. Many disc publishers have a single input bin and a single output bin. Epson's Discproducer, however, has three unique operating modes for you to choose from depending on the size of your job: batch mode for larger production runs of up to 100 discs, standard mode for smaller production runs up to 50 discs and external mode for up to 5 discs with mixed media support. Discproducer's easy-to-use Total Disc Maker software includes disc selection, data formatting, label design and publishing functions all in one package. X543DN Mfp Color Laser 21/21 Ppm P/c/s Duplex Review

X543DN Mfp Color Laser 21/21 Ppm P/c/s Duplex
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The features included fast printing, full color, automatic double sided printing (w/o fax option). It will work as a network printer, too. It was clearly designed to work with Windows, but it is also sold as Mac OS compatible, and the User Manual walks you though set-up steps with Windows or Mac OS at the same time. It is thorough. Thank goodness it's in HTML format, too.
I'm a long time HP printer user (30+ years) and I wary of other brands. But, I haven't had a good experience with HP over the years - they just don't keep their printers drivers up to date (at least, not for Mac or Unix systems).
Mac users won't have any problems with this printer, and the Mac installer is included. The printer driver did not include a double sided printing option. You have to be working from one of the Microsoft Office applications, to notice a third line of options called "Copies & Pages" > "Printer Features". Opening up that list provides all the printer functions like printing form the options sheet feeder (envelope) and you can turn on double sided printing (from the"Layout: menu), if you look carefully enough. You can also choose binding on the long or short side, too.
My first mistake was that I assumed the envelope in the single sheet option feeder would give it priority to the main paper bin (as it does on HP printers).
While I am impressed that this printer worked right out of the box (no set-up required). I followed the instructions to the letter, installing the "software" before plugging in the printer. But, it might as well be using the Generic Postscript driver - nothing special about the driver.
While unpacking, it took me about 15 minutes to follow all the colored tape to pull about a dozen plastic shipping pins. Not real hard, but I was still surprised at how many of those pins where installed. It is easy to snap off the plastic pins, so use care when removing them.
I was not impressed with "pinch and lift" access to the toner drawer - it sticks. But, I do like the small square toner cartridges, which fit snugly in their respective slots. Each toner box is keyed, so you can mix up the colors.
The print quality is excellent. Finally, I'm printing off web pages that look just like they do on my monitor. No calibration needed. That's impressive. Color copies and photos look great, as well. If you were used to printing color photos off in B&W on a monotone laser printer, you'll find the color version more interesting.
The manual also neglects to point out the importance of using high quality, polished paper for laser printers (probably because HP sells so much of it). Good paper is really important for sharpness and brightness. When you print to a bond or cotton stock paper, it will look fuzzy, because of the paper texture. The printer has an option for gloss, but I haven't tested that with a photo.
It copies great, speed is good once it warms up, but warm-up can take 20-30 seconds. Once it's running, it does good. I printed out a 40 page PowerPoint file that had heavy black frames. It often took 30-50 seconds to render a page, but others came out steady. On a Mac, the PDF rendering is done in software, not through a chip in the printer. So, some of the delay was no doubt, on the computer end. However, my Mac Pro has a lot of CPU power and RAM to match.
Scanner? - I haven't found any Lexmark installed Scanner applications, but I was able to choose the scanner from the "Import" function in Adobe PhotoShop and Preview, but not from iPhoto. It works, but it's a bit awkward. HP's software takes you directly into a suite of applications that help you edit the picture and print to photo paper of any size, and the have all kinds of printing options like masks.
I don't like the rather small, vertical output tray in the back and because of that feature, I did not order the extra paper bin. You can't expect to stack up much output, before you will need to clear the tray. 40-50 pages, max.
The sheet feeder worked perfectly. If you fax or copy multiple documents, this is a powerful feature.
The control panel layout is well done. The set-up menus are a little awkward to use, but fortunately, you won't have to use the tiny character panel very often (2 rows of 16 characters). It reminds me of setting the clock on my VCR.
The confusion didn't begin until I wanted to order a new set of cartridges.
First, they are hard to find in stores. I checked in every store that sold office supplies and Lexmark printers. But, even ordering them on-line was difficult.
Here on Amazon, they don't have the cartridge listed in their printer cross-reference tool. (great tool, otherwise, but apparently, it's incomplete).
On Lexmark's web site, it doesn't take long to find cartridges, but then you start to think you are getting cross-eyed. They seem to have cartridges with different amounts of toner (ink) in them!? Oh, no. Is this like the way HP was selling Photosmart inks cartridges that weren't full? I hope not. When I see a toner or ink cartridge, I expect that it's a full one, otherwise, its impossible to compare prices!
So, not only are the toners hard to find, but you need to be very careful that you are comparing the toner capacities and price.
The "High Yield Toner" was pre-installed - they do not have a replacement part number on them!?
For example, they list:
C540X1_G Toner for Extra High yield (C544 and X544 only) -$130
C540H1_G Toner for High yield (C540,C543,C544,X543,X544 printers) - $72
C540A1_G Toner (C540,C543,C544,X543,X544 printers) - $58
C540X2_G Toner for Extra High yield (C544 and X544 only)
C540H2_G Toner for High yield (C540,C543,C544,X543,X544 printers)I bought these for regular Toner refills:
C540A1CG Cyan(Blue) - $58
C540A1MG Magenta (Red) - $58
C540A1YG Yellow - $58
C540A1KG Black (slightly bigger) - $78
(*These are NOT Amazon prices - they are current prices for comparison purposes only)
Bottom-line, double check before you shop for replacement toner. This is a very confusing product, in that respect. Lexmark pushes recycling and the boxes have labels to return the toners.
My over all impression is that I really love it. The copy functions are simple and familiar symbols or labels. Software (printer drivers) are easy to update - I hope they will!
This design is a little bit outdated, but for the price, it's a great way to get into an affordable color laser printer, that is clean, simple, and intuitive. The only interactive display is a tiny 10 letter display (most new printers have an LCD). The user manual is in HTML format, so find the menu map and print it out. You can get there through that tiny front panel, but it takes a lot of time and a little patients. (I hope it has a Factor Reset option, if I ever mess this up...)
Overall, I think this is a very affordable color printer. And, a full set of replacement toner cartridges (a set of 4 can run $3-450) almost costs as much as the original printer. So, you may not want to stock up on new toner - just plan to buy a new printer. Seriously!
But, don't worry about the printer functions - it's laser sharp. The ink is durable, but it will smear if you get the paper wet. It won't survive a coffee spill.Pros: Solid color laser printer; accurate scanner with sheet feeder, copier functions. Mac drivers.
Cons: Toner is hard to find, confusing/deceptive; no single sheet over-ride; no scanner app.
Note: I did not test this printer with Windows.

Did not buy this from Amazon, picked it up for $350 at J&R Computer world.
This is probably the best $350 I ever spent. It replaced a 400 mhZ 256 mb ram 100 gig total HDD space, so anything was an improvement. Setup consisted of plugging it in, turning it on, and typing in a Username and password. Ran great under Vista, completely reliable (people need to stop ragging on Vista). A while ago I upgraded the wimpy 350 watt power supply to a 500 and added a 8800 gt overclocked graphics card. I also added Win& and it runs like a dream.
Pros:
Fast, lots of RAM, nice forward facing USB and headphone ports.
Has a pretty bug HDD
Cons:
Onboard Graphics suck. Couldn't smoothly drive a 21.5" (1920*1080) LCD smoothly (Windows Media Center, Google earth, even the little fade thing that windows 7 does)
Power supply sucks
Poor case ventalation for my overpowered 8800 gt. With a cheaper card it should be fine.
The motherboard is technically mini-atx, so you can't put it into a bigger case. That shouldn't be a problem for normal people, but it bothers me.
Overall:
Great computer. Runs every thing I've thrown at it.

This is a great computer. I love the touch screen although I really don't use it. I think it is just easier to click on items instead of touch them. Watch out for bugs. The touch screen is so sensitive if a gnat lands on the screen it will affect your operation. I love how mobile this computer is but it still must be plugged in everywhere which prevents it from being used in some of the most convenient places. I bought it to replace my desktop PC in the home office, it works great for that.

Panasonic KX-MB271All-in-One Flatbed Laser Office Machine with Print/Scan/Copy Review

Panasonic KX-MB271All-in-One Flatbed Laser Office Machine with Print/Scan/Copy
Average Reviews:

Pros: The shipping box shows a huge diagram showing exactly how to repack everything into the box, in case you need to ever send in for repairs. Operation is simple, yet versatile lots of function options. Heavy: reassuring ruggedness. Very, very easy to install/replace drum or ink cartridge!
Cons: Noisy, for instance a continuous fan noise. The original unpack, assembly is easy but there are no written directions, only lots of pictures. Took me awhile to turn the pieces around in my hand to match the photos. IOW, a few words would have helped! Actually, however, the drum and cartridge installation is all there is to assemble, and do it once and you realize its very simple and quick. 1: Cut toner pack top with scissors and shake it 2. Lift the top up and set drum into hole (or remove drum from hole). 3. Turn the cartridge to lock (or unlock): Thats it! No messiness.
No USB cord... :(
Other Thoughts: All lazer printers are big and heavy, think old 17"" crt monitor size. But this one needs only abt 3"" clearance behind (power cord plug), 0"" left and right, and the output tray extends in front only 4"" (and it slides back inside when no paper in the tray). The scanner lid opens from the front, hence no side clearance necessary. Scanning/printing quality: excellent. OCR character recognition for .jpg, .tiff, etc. files to text: amazingly accurate, wonderful! Easy to use, yet lots of options on board the unit's keyboard: 5 shortcut buttons, lcd display, keypad, 4 way hat. Even more options using the free Multi Funciton Station software. Printing speed is very good at 300x300. A bit slow at 600x600 printing and all scanning.
-----------------
Has been trouble free and intuitive to use for the few months I have had this.
That inkjet contraption is costing you thousands of $'s for supplies/materials down through the years. So get a laser! (And save the little inkjet under the desk/out of the way for color work when necessary).

I just baught this all in one , because I needed to do some faxing, getting it out of the box and setting it up was simple, you just take it out of the box, and its ready to go. However the instructions on how to use it are in my opinion very limited, for example inputting your name or other information into it requires prior knowledge on how to do it, you must know about texting, since the instructions do not tell you you have to use the key pad like you would in texting. When you enter a fax number and you enter a wrong number it does not tell you you can back up and erase it by pushing the left side mark on the Ok ring. If you go to their website, it is not much better, Iam still fooling around with it getting to know everthing about how it works, so far it has been very simple. It works excellent, I have faxed a ton of papers, printed a whole bunch and copied a few, I have not used it for picture printing or copying yet but in printing the colors have all been very good so far, and it has worked flawlesly. It is kind of noisy but it is of no consequence to me. All in all Iam very satisfied with it.
PS.. Iam 72 years old and not very computer literate!!!

This printer was surprisingly small in size to be a color laser MFP. It replaces an HP2840 that died (falsely claiming a jam that couldn't be cleared, even by a printer repair place). I researched MFP devices from Samsung, Canon, Epson, HP, looking for one that was Mac Snow Leopard compatible, had duplex printing capability, color laser printing, and good printing speed. This had all of those features at a price that matched or beat its competition, on a printer that can print more than 20 ppm, both color and B&W, all the others had less than 20 ppm printing speed. I just received the printer today and am pleased with its printing speed and quietness of operation. The HP2840 was a very noisy machine, slow to start up, poor Snow Leopard support (only print, no fax or scan).
If you're using it as a network printer, the only way to scan is via the web interface, but if you hook it up via USB, then you can scan more directly from the computer. I think that's a bit clunky, and Lexmark should make a more sensible driver for it, but at least you can scan/print/fax from the network in Snow Leopard.
Overall, it seems to be a very nice device, and I think I made the best choice.
