Epson Perfection 4870 PRO Scanner Review

Epson Perfection 4870 PRO Scanner

I shoot black & white 35 mm. Previously relied upon either a Polaroid SprintScan 4000 or drum scans. The 4870 produces gorgeous scans and is easy to use. I'm very happy with my purchase. SilverFast has proved to be a dissapointment for use with B&W negs. I would probably have purchased the regular 4870 vs. Pro version if I had it to do over again.

Panasonic KVS2026C SCANNER 24PPM/42IPM ( KV-S2026C )
Average Reviews:

We just received this scanner, and it installed instantly. It scans quickly, feeding about 2 seconds per page at 200 dpi and a little over 4 seconds per page at 400 dpi.
We've seen scanners absolutely wreck a computer system, probably due to driver problems, but we checked and did not have that problem with this scanner: the software appears to have been professionally written, though a warning pops up stating that it has not been checked for compatibility by Microsoft.
Pluses are it's fast, easy to install, and very compact: about 1/2 the footprint of an HP Laserjet 4100, but to use it you do have to pull out input and output trays that increases its footprint to about twice its size. It appears to have a very solid paper handling. After watching it work, you can tell it isn't likely to jam or misfeed.
However, the minuses are that it, like a lot of scanners, slightly skews the page, so it looks a little crooked. Most copiers will not do this, so it can't be used to replace a copier. UPDATE 11/9/09: They changed the driver to add deskewing and so as long as you use the sharpie trick below, the pages come out perfectly level.
I run a law firm and our scanning needs are pretty modest, but after seeing how quickly this unit works, we'll be scanning a lot more. I can't say I'm thrilled about the very slight page skew, which my other scanners also have (but they were 1/4 the price) and yet my copy machines don't have, but I haven't played with it fully to see if there is something we can do to correct it.
Update 5/30/06: the skew has to do with the fact that the paper guides spread apart over time as the unit is feeding pages. We put a small marking pen (like a fine tipped sharpie) between one of the moveable guides and the side of the input tray and it has stopped the skew entirely. I'd rate the unit 5 stars now. Most marking pens are slightly cone shaped, so you can put the pen in until it stops and it will hold the moveable paper guides in place. You only need to use one pen: the guides are connected.
Update 11/9/09: As noted, the skew problems are gone with the update drivers. And wow, it's still going strong nearly 1000 business days after I bought it. Never jams. We only run about 200 pages per day through it: it's rated for 4000, but the bulletproof paper handling and speed was worth buying such a heavy duty scanner. 5 years later, I'm only disappointed that Panasonic has not updated their scanners in nearly 5 years, though they did update the drivers and the new drivers give you just about every feature. You can still buy this one or the faster 2046 - twice the speed for more than twice the price. You can buy the cheaper 2025, but it is rated for a much smaller duty cycle - 1000 pages per day, and I'm a bit afraid of how it will last with people beating up on it. You might also look into the Canon 3010c, a slightly faster scanner that came out in late 2008 that appears to have a few more features, like auto delete of blank pages. It's about $300 cheaper than this one. But honestly, to have a mechanical device that has given us no trouble at all for 5 years and cost me about $1 per day of use to purchase, I'd be hard pressed to buy a different one when this one finally breaks. Keep a bottle of compressed air nearby: when it makes noise, spray the paper dust out of it and it will keep running. Clean the rollers occasionally with rubbing alcohol an q-tips.

This is a winner! Intalled it and within 5 minutes, I had scanned my first slide. It was a snap. You insert the slide in the holder provided, insert the holder into the slot and push until you feel the detent. At that point, the slide is centered. Click the scan button and it's done. The lighted window on the top of the machine is just a light for you to view a slide you have in your hand. It has nothing to do with centering the slide. The slides easily insert into the holder. ALL of the slides scanned in focus. Results are fantastic.
Operation was so simple that there really isn't much to say about that here.
Here's my story: I had 900 baby pictures on slides. No prints. I thought making slides was a great idea 30 years ago. Now, mold is growing on them. Also, they take up too much room to rent a safe deposit box. I bought three different flat bed scanners and two different setups using an S.L.R. camera to take pictures of the slides. Poor quality. I had spent $1,000+ without a decent result. Finally read about the Plustek 7200. Bought it and now, in three days, I'm done digitizing ALL the slides. Go ahead mold... eat the slide because I have them all on CD's. Still have the original packing so I'm going to auction the scanner to recover most of the cost of the scanner. This is a small sturdy machine. I'm sure it'll scan thousands more slides. I am VERY HAPPY!! :-)
I sent each of my sons a copy of the CD, two in a safe deposit box and two in my home office. We'll never lose those memories. Thank you Plustek I am soooo happy!!!

The Plustek OpticFilm 7200 7200DPI Film Scanner is an outstanding solution for photographers who have a collection of 35mm film and wish to scan it for archiving or to digitally manipulate the images on a computer. The OpticFilm 7200 has the ability to scan at a high optical resolution of 7200 dpi and a 48-bit color depth for outstanding accuracy, preserving details such as the highlights and shadows of an image. The scanner is very easy to use: To scan, simply mount slides or a strip of film into the carrier and position it in the scanner. To use the quickscan button on the scanner's front, use the included QuickScan utility, which automatically scans according to the default settings you define. Scanning takes about 48 seconds for 3600 dpi scan, and it uses a single pass.
A small slide-sized square at the top of the scanner lights up when the scanner is on and can be used to view slides and negatives. The scanner uses a USB 2.0 connection for universal compatibility and quick data transfer. The OpticFilm 7200 comes with LaserSoft SilverFast SE 6, which offers controls for tweaking scanned images. A Photoshop plug-in and a TWAIN driver are part of the SilverFast software, enabling its use with other image manipulation programs. Also included is NewSoft Presto! ImageFolio 4.5 and PageManager 7.10. A carrying case is provided to hold the scanner and its accessories. The Plustek OpticFilm 7200 is compatible with Windows XP, Windows 2000, and Windows Vista.

This is a very nice scanner with alot of features,up to 9000 channels stored in groups instead of banks, fire tone out, band scope etc. The biggest drawback is no printed manual. I agree with the other review, that this is very inconvienient.UNIDEN gives you a CD with instructions, which means your chained to your desk, or you have to lug a laptop around all the time.I use this scanner in my vehical, so it would have been nice to have a manual to keep in the glove box for quik reference. To find alot of the things you need to know requires going through many menus and sub-menus, and once you do find what your looking for, you had better remember where you found it, because there are so many menus it's easy to get lost. I wish UNIDEN would at least offer a manual that we could purchase for a few bucks, though after paying 220.00 for the scanner we shouldn't have to. Would have given 5 stars otherwise.

Xerox DocuMate 252 Review

Xerox DocuMate 252
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is the first scanner I've owned that does everything fast and well. For the past several years I've been scanning paper files to hard disk, to the end of achieving a paperless life.
I bought 7 scanners between 1999 and 2005, including an Epson, an HP, 4 Visioneers, and the Xerox Documate 252. All were either sheet-fed or had document handlers. All but the Xerox Documate were fair to dismal.
I used several of the previous scanners with a succession of Macs, while using others on a PC. For Macintosh the HP scanner software always proved dysfunctional. It failed outright a signficant part of the time. The HP hardware was similarly afflicted. The document feeder choked on a high proportion of documents run through it (for reasons I could neither fathom nor correct). The Epson worked slightly better, but was slow and clunky. Its document feeder frequently stuck, and gagged on something as minor as a slight crease in the paper.
The Visioneers had these and other problems as well. Also, files created in the Windows environment on older versions of Paperport scanning software that was bundled with these scanners (Version 5.5, for example) almost always became corrupted in some way when I transferred them from a PC to a Mac, and vice versa. Therefore I had to keep my Mac and Windows scanned archives on separate computers.
When I bought a Xerox Documate 252, it proved head and shoulders above any scanner I had previously owned or even seen. [The Xerox Documate does share the Visioneer nameplate, but as far as I can tell it has nothing in common mechanically with earlier Visioneers.] It makes one-sided or two-sided scans, in color, greyscale, or black and white. It is fast and accurate. The document feeder handles everything I throw at it (with very occasional paper jams). Also, the more recent versions of Paperport scanning software (9.0 and above) that are bundled with the Documate produce pdf files as the default scans. Pdfs transfer well between Mac and Windows. [Some file names do not transfer fully from Mac to Windows, but all file names transfer from Windows to Mac in my experience. Therefore it is better to do initial scanning in the Windows environment. That is necessary in any event with the Xerox Documate, which functions only on Windows operating systems. The Documate does work well, to my own knowledge, on an Intel-based Mac running Windows XP in Boot Camp. I don't know, however, whether that also obtains for Windows Vista in a similar configuration.]
I got more useful scanning done in 4 weeks after I bought this device than I had accomplished in the previous 6 years.
UPDATE: I've now used the Xerox Documate for over 3 years. It has lived up to its promise, and then some. I bought a second one for a different office; it has worked equally well. I have also bought a Fujitsu Scansnap S500. The Scansnap is a capable scanner, at half the price, but not in the same league with the Xerox Documate 252.
There is one further development worth noting. The latest version of the Paperport scanning software (version 11.0, which I am now running on a Vista platform) handles paper jams more deftly. When the document feeder jams, the scanner now provides the option to save the pages already scanned to the Paperport Desktop and continue with the unscanned pages after unclogging the jam. This is a vast improvement over earlier versions, where a jam on the next-to-last page required a complete do-over. [I did not notice, unfortunately, exactly when this improvement kicked in, so I can't say specifically what level of upgrade is necessary to obtain it.]
SECOND UPDATE September 26, 2009: I am updating this review to report that after 4 and 1/2 years the older of my two Xerox Documate 252s has faltered mechanically. The problem is that the roller in the document feeder does not reliably grip the pages of the documents that I insert for scanning. As a result the scanner sometimes just whirs for a time, then stops. The document must be reloaded at that point and the scanning restarted. It helps to press the documents down and against the feeder, but that defeats the self-executing element of the scanner. My conjecture is that the roller (which is made of rubber) has become harder and has shrunk a little, so that it no longer grips paper with as much friction as in its younger days -- a kind of mechanical equivalent of bone loss. In any event, my original Documate 252 is now in semi-retirement. I still use it for short documents that I can help along by hand through the feeder, but not for long sustained scanning jobs. I have replaced the Documate with a Fujitsu fi-6130, which I unpacked and set up today. When I've had more extended experience with the fi-6130, I'll review it on Amazon.com. Meanwhile, I did try a few quick scans earlier today and was tremendously impressed with the mechanical performance of the fi-6130 (although the software is distinctly unwelcoming and will take time to absorb).

Epson GT 2500 Document Imaging Color Scanner (B11B181011)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is my third scanner within the past year.
First was the highly regarded Fujitsu Snapscan. It worked really well for about 6 months on normal letter size documents. But after that, the automatic paper feeder started grabbing more than one sheet at a time.
I cleaned it following instructions and even sent it in for service, but the problem only got worse. Even three sheet scans seized up in the middle when the feeder grabbed all three and jammed. I couldn't finish many jobs at all.
And forget about odd shaped docs - it would take them, but no matter how they went in, they scanned in wild, off center angles, making reading them nearly impossible. The scanner is now somewhere in the garage.
Next: a Brother multi-function center, purchased primarily for its scanner capabilities.
Except that it draws more than a thousand watts of power. And it blew up my battery back-up power system. Posts on the net indicated this wasn't a fluke, so that one went back.
So, now to the new Epson. Here's what I found:
1. After the first half dozen scans (during which the machine made scary loud groaning noises), it now runs very quietly and dependably. Guess I'll never know what those first ones were about, but I'm not worried about it.
2. The quality of the scans is excellent. I advise setting the software for light sharpening.
3. However, there is a little too much scanner interface involvement. You should be able to set all of the various choices (paper size; color vs. black and white; where to save it, etc) and then store that setting and tell the machine to just keep scanning that way until you change it. Instead, you have to approve it for every scan. It only takes a second, but it's annoying.
4. Ironically, the software doesnt stop at the one place you do want it to wait for you - after the scan and before saving, to give you a chance to rename it. It just numbers and saves the file automatically.
This is really dumb, as you have to reopen it and rename it each time(though you can set the software to automatically reopen the file where you keep the scans so it's one step less to do this).
I have to believe they'll fix this in a software update, as this is a new product. I've registered my vote on this and if you buy this product, you should too.
Other than that, I'm very happy with the scanner. It also works well with magazine articles as well as regular bond paper. It's not as fast as the Fujitsu and it requires a couple of extra steps per scan, but... this one works! (and really weird stuff can always go on the flatbed, which the Fujitsu didn't have)
I'm keeping this one and using it to start a project I've been wanting to do for a couple of years now: scan the contents of my file cabinets onto my hard drive.
After that, I'm gonna back it all up on another drive and toss out the originals.
Sweet.

Pros: The scanner is wonderful. The surprise was that the auto-document feeder does not flip the page to scan both sides. The scanner has a second scan bar in the feeder to simultaniously scan both sides on one pass. Fast. Software is not half bad.
Cons: The scanner is BIG! But what do you expect for being able to hold 100 sheets in the tray. Does not directly interface to a network. Scanner must be connected to a PC vis USB.

HP has never really known who to market this device to. I do legal and real estate research and when I first saw a co-worker with this device, I knew I had to have it. It was just beginning to sweep the courthouse where I work when HP discontinued production. The price has sky-rocketed for a used device as this little toy can literally double your productivity if you are out in the 'field' making copies. Mine paid for itself in the first 3 months and I have had it for 3 years.

imageFORMULA P-150M Handheld Scanner
Average Reviews:

Pros: software is Mac/Snow Leopard compatible, convenient size, fast post-scan OCR processing
Cons: no document bin, grabs multiple pages a little too often.
I'm assuming you're looking at this product because it's Mac compatible, relatively portable, rates fast, and looks cool so I won't say much about that, except for the scan speed.
I've been using this scanner for about a month with my 13" MacBook running Snow Leopard, OS X10.6.4, and have scanned a few hundred pages, everything from receipts, bank statements, kids' doodles, color and B&W, thin and thick paper, single and multiple pages. I used basically the default settings, changing only simplex/duplex scans. There are YouTube videos available that demonstrate the P150's scan speed. The fastest speeds are for B&W at 200 dpi. If you have mixed B&W and color documents and set the scanner to automatically determine which type of document it is scanning, it can be significantly slower. Using only one USB connection, 200 dpi, with auto-detect color, paper size, and skip blank pages, I get only 4 or 5 pages per minute. Plus, it takes about 4-5 seconds from pressing Start before the pages begin to feed. OCR processing is very fast, though. Usually done within seconds after the last page has been scanned. It comes with a second USB chord you can use simultaneously, presumably to speed scanning, but I haven't notice any difference.
I had to return the first one I received because the automatic document feeder was defective. It grabbed multiple pages at least 1/3 of the time. i read another bad review on amazon by someone who had the same problem. However, the replacement unit hasn't given me any significant problems so far. So if you're getting a lot of misfeeds, send it back for a replacement.
The included software loaded easily, worked flawlessly, and is easy to use. The built-in Lite version of the scan software worked fine, too. While not super light, it's small and light enough to carry in your briefcase once in awhile. Plus, it's easy to put away if you need some desk space.
The only complaint I have is that there's no document bin to catch your documents after they've been scanned. They just slide out of the front bottom. The document feeder is pretty sensitive so If there's an obstruction, slight uneven resistance can cause the scan to skew or distort. I suppose placing it at the edge of a desk and having a basket catch the sheets as they come out my work.

This scanner uses LEDs as a light source and so has zero warm-up time. The paper feeding system is very fast and and handles irregular sheets and ragged corners with no trouble. The scanner itself beats the HP 5550C I've been using.
Epson's scanner interface is not to my taste but has presets for office and graphic professional scanning needs. What keeps it from getting highest marks is the abysmal customer service.
I couldn't get the twain driver to work under Windows Vista. The WIA driver did work, but doesn't support acquisition from the sheet feeder (which defeats the whole purpose of buying this scanner). Lack of sheet feeder support is a crippling blow to the usability of Paperport (which I have used for years). Epson should not be bundling software that their own product does not support.
I spent hours on the phone with three levels of Epson's technical support to no avail. They tried to pawn me off on Nuance to get Paperport support (Nuance's policy is that software bundled with hardware is supported by the manufacturer of the hardware!)
One of the technicians I spoke to did not even know that twain and WIA were different drivers. How can they possibly address my problem when they have such poor background in the product?
The answer of course, is that Epson's support is provided by a call center in India or some such place and the support people are reading canned responses off a computer screen.
The level two technicians knew nothing more that the level one technicians. After a lengthy conversation with a level three technician I was promised a resolution and a return phone call, which as you might guess, never happened.
In the end, I was left to my own devices and discovered a workaround. Scan using the Epson interface (which does support the document feeder) and set its destination directory to the main Paperport directory.
Then open Paperport and manage your documents from there. Not as good as scanning directly from within Paperport, but it gets the job done.

I upgraded from the fi-4220c2 to the fi-6240. I was happy with the 4220 but with my upgrade to Windows 7, learned that the fi-4220c2 had no Windows 7 drivers and was discontinued. So after 5 long years of reliable use, the fi-4220c2 got retired and I ordered the fi-6240.
Wow. The 6240 is a vast improvement:
Faster, much faster. This thing just rips through documents.
Handles a stack of varied documents (envelopes, cards, letters) with ease - no misfeeds at all.
Produces cleaner, sharper images, which produces better OCR results.
This thing is a workhorse and thoroughbred combined. I couldn't be happier and look forward to putting this scanner through its paces for years to come.

This is really a great product. I used to use a multifunction printer/scanner/fax and scanning was always a major chore, now with the Bulletscan S300 it is really fast and easy. It comes with nice software from Presto to manage your documents and also a business card scanning program.
In this video I tried to show some of the features I found most interesting including the scan selection:
1. B&W PDF Scan
2. Color Scan into Presto Page Manager
3. Scan directly into Google Docs!
4. Scan to Email Client
5. Business Card Scan
6. Scan to Print
At the end of the video I show how you can go portable with the scanner and take it with you leaving the document feeder behind. I have used the scanner for more than a week and am really impressed. I would highly recommend this product to anyone who needs to scan multiple documents.

The iVina BulletScan S300 Duplex Color Sheet-Fed Scanner with Detachable Mobile Scanner is two scanners in one, providing a scanning solution for the office and the road. Whether you need to scan business cards, receipts, ID cards, photos, or legal-sized documents, the BulletScan S300 has you covered--wherever you may be.
Two Scanners in One Whether you're a business traveler or an office worker, you'll love how the BulletScan S300 provides a single solution for all your scanning needs. Using a USB 2.0 connection, the BulletScan S300 scans up to 30 images per minute in color at 200 dpi when docked in its 20-page automatic document feeder.
When it's time to hit the road, simply undock the S300 BulletScan, and you'll have a USB-powered, easy-to-carry mobile scanner that can read an 8-1/2- by 11-inch document in less than five seconds. You'll be able to easily scan business cards, receipts, ID cards, photos, and other documents you acquire while traveling.
Multiple Scanning Options The BulletScan S300 uses a Contact Image Sensor (CIS), scanning at a crisp 600-dpi optical resolution with 48-bit color, 16-bit gray scale, or black-and-white. It also allows for scanning output with 24-bit color, 8-bit gray scale, halftone, dynamic black-and-white, or fixed-threshold black-and-white. With so many options to choose from, the BulletScan S300 ensures you'll always get the scans you want.
Easy-to-Use Software BulletScan Manager Software makes it easy for you to control your scanning processes, file formats, and scan-to destinations. The BulletScan S300 includes six scan-to destinations with one-click configuration for scan-to-email, scan-to-print, scan-to-PDF, searchable PDF, and others.
Additionally, BulletScan Manager offers both easy and advanced scan mode settings. In easy mode, default features include auto straighten, auto crop, auto rotate, and edge cleanup. Advanced mode allows for fine tuning of all settings.
Optimum Accuracy with Auto-Language Detection The BulletScan S300 is powered by ABBYY FineReader Technology, the same technology used for ABBYY FineReader Desktop OCR, a PC Magazine four-star product. With high optical character recognition accuracy, the BulletScan is able to reduce the size of resulting PDF files without any loss of visual quality. Additionally, the smart software retains text-under-image, text-over-image, text-and-picture, or image-only PDFs.
The FineReader technology has automatic language detection, so you get no-hassle scanning, OCR, and conversion. It automatically detects documents in English, French, Italian, German, and Spanish.
System Requirements The BulletScan S300 requires a computer with a Pentium 4 or equivalent processor, Windows 7/XP (SP 2)/Vista operating system, 512 MB of RAM (1 GB for Vista), 350 MB of available hard drive space, a CD/DVD-ROM drive, and a USB port.
The BulletScan S300 is rated for a daily duty cycle of 2,500 pages and is backed by a two-year warranty.

I bought this scanner after recommendation from my historical data rescue contractors, which uses them daily and highly recommends them.
Out of the box, without even reading the manual(s), the included software works well and the scanner chewed through large stacks of paper with no problems.
My contractors noted that (under very heavy use) the feeding wheels can be / should be replaced every three years. [Symptoms are sheet mis-feeding.] These parts can be ordered from the company and replaced with no major hassles.

Fujitsu fi-6130 Duplex Scanner (PA03540-B055) Review

Having used scanners from Canon, Xerox, Lanier, Visioneer and Epson, I have a good base from which to compare this scanner. It is excellent! The feed mechanism on this scanner is superior to all prior scanners I have used, including other scanners in this price range. This unit has multiple rollers located in the base and cover that spin at different speeds to pull only one sheet at a time. In other scanners, folded paper - like documents received in an envelop - will double/multi feed. I have not had a single double feed with this unit. I am using it with File Center Pro software to convert more than 1,600 legal files to paperless .pdf format. I was so impressed with this unit that I now have 4 of them in the office, each going at least 8 hours per day with virtually no jams or double feeds. It's worth the money for an office setting where you don't have time for jams and double feeds.
