Western Digital My Book Studio II - 6 TB (2 x 3 TB) USB 2.0/FireWire 800/400/eSATA Desktop External Hard Drive Review

Western Digital My Book Studio II - 6 TB (2 x 3 TB) USB 2.0/FireWire 800/400/eSATA Desktop External Hard Drive

I have been using the WD Studio II 2TB on my 2008 iMac OSX 10.5.6 for two weeks. Connection: firewire 800. Today, it did not mount when I booted the computer.
Checked the WD Website Knowledge Base.
Discovered two things:
1. Knowledge Base Answer 1697: "This issue is caused by the external hard drive's built in auto on/off functionality not correctly receiving a command from the computer system to wake from a power saver mode."
Why does the auto on/off functionality not correctly receive the command from the computer system? WD goes on to suggest installing their WD Drive Manager.
Well, WD Drive Manager is already installed, how else could a user have arrived at this impasse to begin with?
And then they suggest to dismount the drive. How do you dismount an unmounted drive?
2. Knowledge Base Answer 1680: "This is an technical limitation between the FireWire interfaces on the Macintosh computer and the external hard drive."
By "the external hard drive" WD means THEIR brand of external hard drive. I have never had this specific problem with any other brands of external hard drives connected to my Macintosh computer.
When is WD going to fix this "technical limitation" that they have built into their Studio II external hard drive? I would say, that is a pretty serious "technical limitation."
1680 goes on to explain the workaround solution, essentially a routine disconnecting the power cable and reconnecting. Nice.
My hope is that this entire situation is the result of following the apparently misleading instructions shown in the Studio II manual: chapter 7, "Turning Off/Disconnecting the Device."
Since "Auto-off" is the first entry in this chapter, it leads the user to believe that this is the preferred way to operate the drive. Guess not: as it turns out, the hidden "technical limitation" of the firewire connection will eventually cause the problem I have described. I suppose I can't rely on "Auto-off." Use "Safe Shutdown" only, even though the instructions in the manual differ from the instructions presented in WD Knowledge Base Answer 976!
And, speaking of conflicting instructions, compare WD Knowledge Base Answer 1386 with the Auto-off instructions in the manual.
Based on all of this information from WD, conflicting and otherwise, my guess is that the Auto-off feature is problematic (at least with Macintosh computers) because of firewire "technical limitations" caused by the WD external drive design. This fact, if it is a fact, should be expressed clearly in the manual.

Playboy Cover to Cover Hard Drive - Every Issue From 1953 to 2010 Review

Playboy Cover to Cover Hard Drive - Every Issue From 1953 to 2010
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Having played with this for a couple of days I have to admit I'm impressed. I previously owed the 1950's DVD box set using the Bondi software as well, and this feels more refined and faster. I've been able to easy index various contributors and articles and save them for later.
The quality of the scans aren't great. In some cases there are water stains or scribbles on the pages. It's possible that was the best they had, since let's face it I doubt Hugh Hefner and company were thinking of posterity early on in the magazine's run. Printing in particularly is pretty disappointing. At the very least it would have been nice to include the option to read transcribed text like Zinio and other software offers. That said, on a computer screen everything should be fairly readable.
As others have mentioned, the quality of the pictures is also an issue. In fact I was really shocked to find out this 250gb harddrive has 215gb free. You'd think with all that space they'd scan these documents in a higher resolution, or at least offer some extras like separate folders with high-rez shots of Playmates. It seems like a lost opportunity which Playboy may be kicking themselves for now. When I inquired via email on the 1960's DVD box set they immediately offered me a [...] off coupon for this set, which would indicate it isn't selling as well as they had hoped.
Which is kind of sad, because for all it's faults there is a goldmine of intellectual property on this hard drive. The articles, pictures, even advertisements are great to read. Sure I'd like higher quality scans, but I own both the Rolling Stone and National Geographic box sets and poor quality scans are an issue for all digitized magazines. So grab it while you can, because I have a feeling this won't be on the market for that long.

Pros:
* Reasonably priced considering what you are getting (fireproof, waterproof, theft protection)
* Includes a way to bolt the drive down for theft protection
* Gives peace of mind - protecting my code (I'm a programmer) and other valuable data
* I emailed the company with a question about encryption and got a fast response that answered the question
Cons:
* Only USB 2.0 interface - could be faster with USB 3.0 or eSATA (future update?)
Other:
* Unit weighs about 15 pounds
* Requires external power supply
* Must register within 7 days with ioSafe
* My 2TB unit uses a Hitachi HDS722020ALA330 hard drive
* Can buy DRS (data recover service) extensions/upgrades to 5 years
* Check the videos (YouTube) on the Internet to see what this thing can take
* I use mine with my Windows Home Server and backup the shares and backups to it
* Encrypting data on the drive may make data recovery more difficult in case of disaster
* I bought a unit with 5 years of DRS and it shipped out as two seperate packages - the HD with 1 year DRS and a DRS upgrade to 5 years

I purchased this drive to run Time Machine on a PowerMac G5. The cost of the drive seemed ridiculously low, given the variety of connections that it supports (I'm using Firewire 800) and its large storage capacity. Installation was a breeze: just attach and follow a couple of onscreen instructions. The drive sits about 2 feet from the computer, and is so quiet that I never notice it's there. This is my second Iomega storage device. The first was a StorCenter we use as a NAS server. I couldn't be more satisfied with the Iomega brand.

Iomega Prestige 2 TB USB 2.0 Desktop External Hard Drive 34484 Review

Iomega Prestige 2 TB USB 2.0 Desktop External Hard Drive 34484
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I stopped using Iomega products several years ago (remember the infamous "click of death" infesting Iomega Zip drives?) But after reading the Amazon reviews, I decided to get the Iomega 1TB drive.
It is about half the size of my old 350 GB Maxtor hard drives, costs half as much, and has three times the storage capacity! I plugged it in and Windows XP had it up and running in seconds, no fuss.
As a test, I transferred two gigs of photos (I'm a photojournalist) and it backed up two gigs in two minutes. It is almost perfectly silent.
I didn't bother downloading the free Retrospect Backup software; I always back up manually as part of my business routine.
If I ever have a problem with this drive, I'll update this review. Otherwise, I rate it as a perfect high-capacity drive, period.
Update note: been using it 18 months now, no problem. Works fine on my new Windows 7 64 bit machine. Also, I keep it turned off except when I need it. It tends to get quite warm if I leave it running.

I've had two of these hard drives for over 3 months now I am completely in love with them.
The connectivity, the style, the capacity, the speed, and how it goes perfectly with the rest of my Apple gear... it's just an amazing piece of hardware.
I use one primarily for editing, and the other one as a back up with Time Machine. Haven't had any problems so far and if I ever need another HDD I know I'll get another G-Tech, this one, or if they come out with a better one then that one.
Love it!
EDIT - 08/26/2009: Still have it and still going strong. All hard drives crash eventually, but I can guarantee that whenever these two puppies fail I will be getting another G-Tech drive. Truly a remarkable product and the only hard drives I currently recommend.

LaCie d2 Network v.2 1.5 TB Ethernet Network Attached Storage 301505 Review

LaCie d2 Network v.2 1.5 TB Ethernet Network Attached Storage 301505
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This Network Disk was purchased with the intension of being used in a Mac Only environment for professional graphic design and 3D modeling services. 4 macs on a gigabit Ethernet network.
Amazon packaging was done properly, arrived in perfect condition.
LaCie packaging was done very well. The package includes all cables and software needed.
SW Installation took 8-10 minutes and only requires to be installed on ONE machine.
It mounts very fast on each machine as I have named it; DA5-Netdisk
The files are generally reference Photos and 3Dmodels that are used and shared between these machines.
Transfer Speed:
Test file: A Folder containing 2 files; One 4KB (1,375 bytes) and the other 1,088,275,968 for a total of 1.01GB (1,088,277,343 bytes)
Test condition: The only file transfer done at the time.
On a G5 Dual 2GHz PPC:
From External FW800 to Netdisk, 31 seconds
From Internal SATA to Netdisk, 29 seconds
On a Macpro 2.93MHz Quad, 8-core
From External eSATA OWC to Netdisk, 29 seconds
From Internal dual RAID WD Raptors to Netdisk, 28 seconds
For testing I used a folder and NOT a file since that is a more realistic simulation of everyday use than one large file.
The speed is very good. It is NOT the fastest which is the IOCELL NETDISK NDAS 351 but the Iocell does NOT allow more than ONE Mac to write to the netdisk in NDAS (Multip[le READ, single WRITE). The difference is about 2-3 seconds per transfer on a 1GB file. That is very negligible for me or almost 99% of people who would use a netdisk.
Note that deleting ANY file or folder from the netdisk will NOT put the item(s) in TRASH but it DELETES the file(s) or Folder(s) immediately. While it can be a bit inconvenient for mistakes but it is great for the fact that the available space shown at the bottom of the window is always REAL. A warning window does pop up giving you a chance to cancel in case of mistake.
The drive enclosure runs silent, it runs cooler than almost any drive I have. The temperature normally is LESS than putting your hand under your arm.
The blue LED light in front is not very bright and not distracting. It does blink during file transfers.
The enclose is small and has a nice sturdy aluminum casing with a base foot that is very stable.
I consider the life of an external HD on FW800, 400 or eSATA to be about 3-4 years. I anticipate this drive to work this length like the other 7 externals that I have from LaCie. 2 of them are dead after 4 and 4.5 years.
I have also set up the information on this Netdisk to be backed up every night to another LaCie 2TB in case of any failure.

Logicube Echo Plus - Hard drive duplicator ( IDE / SATA ) Review

Logicube Echo Plus - Hard drive duplicator ( IDE / SATA )
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
We use this device to speed up image deployment- with the help of the Windows Automated Installation Kit, we constructed and generalized a standard image. This image is cloned with the Logicube and we are able to reduce the configuration/deployment time to about 15 minutes total by eliminating the time spent copying files from a DVD or flash drive. The Logicube will copy to a standard SATA disk at about 2.5GB/sec. Add to that the time it will take to scan both disks, power them up, error check, etc. This device clones a standard windows 7 install (12-15GB with installed software)in about 5 minutes on clever mode.
The Logicube also comes in handy with touchy, older equipment. When I start to see signs of drive failures- bad sectors, failing SMART tests, etc. I simply clone the old drive to a new one, run CHKDSK, and begin using the new disk.
I also use the device to blank drives before disposal, by doing a block level copy of a virgin disk.
This device is by far the easiest to use and most dependable I have used- my average interaction with it consists of pushing the "start|stop" button once to wake it up, once to start the copy.
Money well spent!

Western Digital WDG2T15000N MyBook Premium II 1.5 TB Hard Drive Review

Western Digital WDG2T15000N MyBook Premium II 1.5 TB Hard Drive
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This review covers the family of My Book Pro II/Premium II drives from Western Digital, since the primary differences between the 1.0, 1.5 and 2.0Tb dual-drive models involve the size of the drive pair only, as far as I can tell. I own the My Book Pro II 1.5Tb drive and have only configured it for the factory-default Raid 0 mode, since I wanted as much non-redundant storage as possible.
Anyone not familiar with external USB or Firewire drives may be surprised at the significantly slower data transfer; the USB or Firewire interface is the bottleneck, not the drive itself. For bulk storage at still-reasonable transfer rates and for the purchase price per byte, these large capacity drives can't be beat - as long as they are reliable and the user observes all the rules about making sure the drives are safe to physically disconnect from the computer (I won't cover the rules here; the operating system has its own Help section that can assist the user who is unsure of how to physically disconnect their drive without turning off the computer itself).
OK, back to the Western Digital My Book II drive... when the drive is received, the Raid Manager software package should be installed before plugging in the drive. After I did this and plugged in the drive, I had one problem after another with the drive disappearing in Windows, the fan going very loud when there was no heat issue to make it do so, then the drive would act like it over-heated and shut down. Twice I received replacement drives and both replacement drives acted the same way.
I figured the problem wasn't the drive, so I tried the second replacement on a second PC running Vista; same problems. I next moved the drive to a PC running Windows XP; no problem - the drive ran quietly and reliably.
It turns out there is currently (12/22/07) a problem with Windows Vista and the way it stores driver information. The fix is found in their technical bulletin 1708 (go to www.wdc.com, support, frequently asked questions and enter "1708" in the "Search by Keyword" field. This has solved all my problems with my drive and I can now recommend this drive without reservations, however Vista is due for its first significant "patch", SP1, in the first half of 2008 and these sorts of patches have sometimes provoked new problems. I do think the solution presented in technical bulletin 1708 would still be helpful if the SP1 patch caused further problems, however.

Western Digital My Passport Essential 160 GB USB 2.0 Portable External Hard Drive (Cherry Red) Review

Western Digital My Passport Essential 160 GB USB 2.0 Portable External Hard Drive (Cherry Red)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Western Digital My Passport Essential 320GB USB 2.0 Portable Hard Drive (Midnight Black) is the largest capacity in the portable essentials line-up. This comes in a variety of colors including Pink, Real Red, Artic White and Intense Blue. They say that this is the update to the regular Western Digital 320 GB Passport Hard Drive and I own both of them. In fact I also own many other portable hard drives in the Western Digital passport lineup and so far I couldn't be happier. All of these are great for mobile backups of data, though slower to copy large backups than their A/C powered MyBook big-brothers.
Some will be considering the Western Digital My Passport Essential 250GB and the Western Digital My Passport Essential 160 GB sizes of these drives. I started with the 160 GB and have owned multiple versions in all sizes, and capacity aside these drives are basically the same. If you are on the fence between a smaller or larger size, the decision will come down to what you really need most. If you need a drive for complete backups, don't box yourself in purchasing a 160 GB model when your hard drive is 120 GB. Give yourself some room and go with the 320 if you can.
For those with backup needs of 80 GB or smaller, look into the other capacities. Periodic specials are being run on some of the smaller sizes, making them very attractive. Plus a 500 GB model should be on the way soon. So if you need the largest size, then by all means get the 320 GB version. But if you can make do with the smaller size, then the value pricing may entice you. Weigh your options but whatever size you pick now make sure it's enough to meet your needs right now and for at least the next 6 months. In fact, some people who are extremely picky like me are going to want to buy at least 2 drives so that they can have 2 copies of their backups, just in case.
Pros
+ Great capacity options at good prices available in this line of products
+ Nice portable form factor that easily connects via USB
+ USB powered, no A/C required, which is great for portability
+ Works well on Windows Vista, XP and Mac OS X
+ Easy to set up disk encryption for security and privacy
+ Nice looks, and cool color options for those that care about that
+ Turns on and off with your computer or easily ejected via system tray
+ Easy plug-and-play installation
+ Integrates nicely with my growing stable of WD MyBook drives
+ Included software may be useful for some novices
+ Drives are sufficiently durable holding up to normal use over time
+ 320 GB capacity is just about right for most users
Cons
- Somewhat slow file transfer speeds for larger backups
- Included software not useful for power users
- Shiny body attracts scratch, fingerprints and dust
- Only USB, so look to the LaCie 250 GB Rugged Hard Disk if you need fire-wire ports too
- Only up to 320 GB right now, so look to the LaCie 500 GB Rugged Hard Disk with FireWire and USB if you need more capacity in a portable drive
- Have to spend your cash to get a case that should have been included
The Looks
The drive has a nice shiny exterior. The case can scratch in transit and the surface also attracts fingerprints and dust. But the look is still nice and you can easily purchase a case or holder for the drive if it bothers you. Most versions don't ship with the case included, but you can pick up the CaseLogic Small External Hard Drive Case (Black) for $10 or $15.
The Features
I had no problem connecting this drive to any computer, including Windows XP, Vista and Mac OS X. Keep in mind this is a USB 2.0 device so ancient computers may not yield the same results.
Transfer speeds are ok but definitely slower than the A/C powered MyBooks. This guy is still limited by the 480 Mbs connection speed of USB 2.0, but performs somewhat slower than this when performing large backups. The USB 2.0 speed rating can not really be achieved in production and you will get a fraction of that. But it's a trade-off that's worth it since it's USB-powered. Check out the LaCie 250 GB Rugged hard disk if you need fire-wire ports too. Or try the LaCie 500 GB Rugged hard disk if you need more portable capacity.
The software utilities included with this device will be most useful for beginners. I tested the backup software in particular but found it to be slow and impractical. I mean REALLY slow. It works, but cutting and pasting is better. Take my advice: don't use these utilities and just do cut and paste backups and saves to this drive.
Reliability
I've had good luck with the passport line of drives. They seem to have lower failure rates than many MyBook drives, though I also own those and haven't had issues there either. Maybe my gentle care has helped me to get lucky with these guys so far. Maybe it's because these drives are generally off when in transit. Regardless, these guys have held up fine.
Conclusion
This drive is great or those who want a portable drive for backups on the run. It's nice getting the 320GB capacity in one drive. There are smaller drives but other than capacity there is no real difference between them. Watch the price changes and choose the sized drive that's right for you.
Enjoy!

I recently lived through the misery and expense of my year-old Lacie external hard drive failing. It cost me $900 (I used DriveSavers; they did a great job) to recover the ten years worth of digital photos (37,000) I lost. So I resolved to never let that happen again. Thus the purchase of this mambo RAID drive, after a moderate amount of research. I have been unable to attach it via ESATA but the problem appears to be with my Dell computer (non-functioning ESATAs seem to be a common problem on the newer ones). Firewire and USB 2.0 work great. I did have an issue where a couple of the drive failure warning lights were blinking but that is gone for now and the drive never stopped working.

The Samsung S1 mini drive packs a whole lot of punch in an extremely small package.
OUT OF THE BOX: Opening the box, I couldn't believe how small it was and after using it, I am extremely pleased that I went with Samsung as the quality cannot be beat. 120GB's in a package that is substantially smaller than a cell phone.
CABLES: Samsung did an excellent job of thinking through the customer experience and have included two cables.
*The first cable is approximately three inches long and allows for convenient connection to a notebook in tight spaces. The drive and this cable could be carried in a handbag or notebook bag without causing a mess.
*The second cable is roughly 18 inches long and allows for connection to the drive from the back of a desktop system when space isn't a concern.
CASE: Samsung has included a stylish leather case to protect the drive when not in use.
PERFORMANCE:
*The S1 drive has a capacity of 120GBs which is plenty enough room for the average user who is going to be copying files, backing up work or just looking to save space on their notebook.
*The S1 drive comes has auto backup software installed and is extremely easy to set up.
OVERALL: I have only had the Samsung S1 drive for a few days but I have to say that I am extremely impressed with the overall solution that Samsung has provided in this small sleek package. Samsung has always been a market leader in electronics and I assure you that you will not be disappointed when purchasing this drive. LaCie d2 160GB TRIPLE interface external hard drive FW/FW800/USB2 ( 300716 ) Review

LaCie d2 160GB TRIPLE interface external hard drive FW/FW800/USB2 ( 300716 )

I bought this triple interface external hard drive mostly so I can have enough space for my iTunes music library in Apple Lossless format. I saw the older models at the Apple Store and I loved how they looked and the build quality was noticeably better than the external drives from other brands. The blue LED is also a very nice touch.
The triple interface makes it easy to use this drive with any Macs, if you have a Mac with FW800, transfer rate should be blazing fast. I also use it with my work laptop running XP and Gentoo GNU/Linux, no problem using it from all the different OSes.
The drive runs pretty quiet, not sure why others had complained about the noise level. The fan on my PC laptop is much noisier than the LaCie drive.
I highly recommend the LaCie d2 triple interface hard drives to anyone looking for a ton of additional storage for data. It probably wouldn't be wise to install programs on the drive as the transfer rate is still not quite as fast as native IDE, SCSI, SATA, and what not. But it's fast enough for high-quality streaming video, and definitely more than sufficient for music files like AAC, Ogg, and MP3. It is also excellent to use for backing up important data, but note that it only contains a single drive inside and it does not have any sort of redundency.

I purchased this USB drive to backup my Olive Musica music server. I booted the drive, plugged it into the Musica, and it was immediately recognized as an external drive. Same results when I plugged it into my computer. The unit's whirring is audible (barely. I would rate the unit as extremely quiet, quieter than any other hard disk except for the Musica's), but since I can turn it off when I'm not backing up, or store it in the stereo cabinet, that's not an issue. The manual is simple and clear, and the accompanying software easy to use - although I did not use much of it.
