Column Mount Notebook-Monitor Dual Arm w/SmartFit System Review

My wife wanted a larger monitor than the 17" laptop screen she was using. I found this at a decent price, bought it and a 24" monitor and now she is very pleased with the two screens for multitasking. She also like how it holds the laptop off the desk so she has room for a normal PC keyboard. When I get my laptop, I'll get one of these too.

Dual XDVDN8290N AM/FM/DVD Receiver with 7-Inch Motorized, Touch, Full iPod, Full Bluetooth Interface (Black) Review

Just picked up one of these for my 4-runner. Looks great installed. It is packed with features. Would have given it 5 stars, but it was missing a couple of minor features I would have liked to have seen. Here are my pros and cons:
Pros: Packed with great features including Nav, Ipod connection w/ cable included, Plays DVD +/-RW, Decent bluetooth, built in microphone for use with bluetooth that I have been told sounds pretty good when making a call, easy to use touchscreen interface. All in all, great features considering the price.
Cons: These are nitpicky little things that I felt were missing. None of them should really be a dealbreaker, but thought I would list them for your edification. 1) Ipod playback doesnt browse to Artist>Album like it does on the ipod. WHen you select the Artist, it just lists all the songs by the artist, regardless of what album the songs are on. This makes it a little difficult to find a specifc album unless you use the Album search. If you are like me, that search could take a while. 2) No sat radio. 3) No way to store contacts for use with Bluetooth. You can use your phone to find the number and call, then use HU. 4) No voice command option.
That is what I noticed just after a couple of days of use. Despite these shortcomings, the Dual XDVDN8290 HU is a terrific value for the price. You get 90%+ of the features offered by the more expesive stereos and if you can live with the missing features I have mentioned, I see no reason not to get one if you are in the market.

Synology 5-Bay Plug-n-Use Expansion Unit to DS1010+, DS710+, and DS1511+ Network Attached Storage DX510 (Black) Review

Synology 5-Bay Plug-n-Use Expansion Unit to DS1010+, DS710+, and DS1511+ Network Attached Storage DX510 (Black)

The present version of synology's o/s (132 MB!) is only able to support 16TB (before applying the raid loss) volumes. What's a volume? It's a raid or no-raid group of disk drives that combines. A stock 1010+ will let you combine 5 ea 2TB (really 1.82 TB) disks to end up with a 9.1 TB volume (which meets the OS limits of 16TB) but when you go to expand it with this unit, you have 10 drives instead of 5 and a 18.2 TB volume if you allocate all drives to one volume (which is the idea - to have as many data disks and just one parity disk). Unfortunately if you went all the way with 2TB drives, you went too far and exceeded the 16TB limit, so the last disk must be left out of your raid volume (it gets 9 drives, one is a parity drive, and your data drives are 8 x 1.82 TB for 14.56 TB of data from the 8 data drives with raid5 protection). The 10th drive is leftover and can be used as a separate 1.82 gb storage volume on the network.
The other option is to make 2 raid5 volumes, each with 4 data disks and 1 parity disk. The advantage is that if the expansion box fails, only the volume on it suffers any data exposure, whereas if the expansion box fails with a volume spanning to the expansion box and the expansion box looses power or e-sata it will destroy the main volume. (the e-sata cable that comes with this unis has 2 screws that hold it in place, and a ups is highly advised)
Either way you loose 2 drives in a 10 drive system - with a 14.56TB volume you loose drive 10 to be just a plain old 1.82 GB disk drive, with 2 separate volumes, you loose 2 drives to parity storage.
For more detail on using the 1010+ see my comments posted below - If I just wanted a big raid, in retrospect, I'd consider their 8 drive rackmount version (which would give me 7 data disks in raid5 or 6 data disks in raid6). The reason is it avoids the 2nd power cord and the e-stata cable for the sidecar - if there is a problem with either of those and your raid spans the sidecar you loose everything fast. The 8 drive rackmount is almost 10 drives, and they have a 16 TB software limit, so with 10 disks, 1 of them becomes "just a disk" and you get 9 disks maximum in a full box + sidecar system - might as well get the enhanced reliability of the 8 drive system for that and not have a 20 inch umbilical cord between your boxes and 2 power cords.
Also power draw is VERY LOW - the system implements spindown when nobody is using the raid.
see my comments below for more info of how these are made.
The good news is that synology does release frequent firmware upgrades which are easy to install. I'll put through a request to support 32GB volumes instead of 16GB so that we can have less parity loss.

Lx Dual Stacking Arm Review

Lx Dual Stacking Arm

I installed this arm a few days ago and I'm very happy with it. I bought it to free up some desk space by holding a 23" monitor and an audio mixing console. The laptop stand attachment holds the mixing console perfectly. The arm is nicely engineered and very well built. Installation was pretty simple and straight forward. The unit is extremely easy to use and adjust tension to hold different weights.
I'm amazed at all the different ways I can lay out my equipment now, and I can also get it completely out of the way to free up desk space for other uses. I viewed the expense as an investment in freeing up desk real estate. This stand has saved me from needing to buy another desk. That alone is well worth the price.

Quad Monitor Stand Supports LCD Monitor 15IN To 24IN Review

Quad Monitor Stand Supports LCD Monitor 15IN To 24IN

I am using this stand for 4x 24-inch Samsung SyncMaster 245BW monitors. The stand is very stable and built nice and solid. I found it was easier to setup by laying the monitors flat on my desk then attach them to the monitor stand brackets and have someone help you stand it up into place on your desk. It probably took about an hour of tweaking to get it to my liking since I have them curved and tilted a bit. I have very minimal gaps between the monitors which is expected when you are curving and tilting the monitors. Here is some useful info for those of you who have a Samsung SyncMaster 245BW or a monitor with an odd sized mounting bracket and are looking for an affordable adapter:From what I have been told the standard mounting size for most monitors is either 75mmx75mm or 100mmx100mm. My Samsung SnynMaster 245BW has a 100mmx200mm mounting bracket. Once I received my stand I found this out so I went searching on google. These adapters were about $20.00 - $50.00 per bracket!! I found a "200X200mm Bracket Universal Adapter" at MonoPrice.com for $3.73 each and I bought some just expecting to have to modify it a bit to fit my 100mmx200mm but it perfectly worked without modifying it.
On each monitor I used 4 metric sized screws and some standard washers to attach the "MonoPrice: 200X200mm Bracket Universal Adapter" plate and 4 standard screws, washers, and nuts to attach the adapter to the monitor stand mounting bracket. The metric screws were about $2.00 each at Lowes!! If I were to do this again I would have ordered at least the metric screws online before hand.
Hope this helps some of you out there save a bit of $$$ and frustration.

Dual Arm Mount Review

Dual Arm Mount

This mount works great and has many adjustable features & cable routing. I am using it with dual 27" monitors and couldn't be happier - just be sure and tightly secure the VESA plate on the back of the monitor before mounting it on the arm or you can get some left/right tilt and it is a pain to adjust once mounted. Great dual monitor solution!

Intel Core i7-870 2.93GHz 8 MB LGA1156 Processor BX80605I7870 Review

I recently upgraded from a Core 2 Duo and Asus P5W DH Deluxe motherboard with 6GB of RAM to this CPU (the i7 870) and the EVGA P55 SLI Mainboard 132-LF-E655-KR motherboard with 8GB of RAM. While its difficult to assess how much of the improvements can be attributed to the CPU alone without taking all of the other components into account, I can tell you that everything is so much faster now, especially when working with large spreadsheets, videos, and other CPU-intensive programs that I use on a regular basis.
If you are looking for an inexpensive yet effective CPU and board cooler that is compatible with this CPU as well as most other popular ones, may I suggest the Cooler Master GeminII S Copper Base Aluminum Fins 5 Heatpipes CPU Cooler? I didn't want to use the stock CPU fan that comes with this chip, and the prices of some of the other coolers were killing me. The Cooler Master GeminII S was a great price and works very well.
