Nikon Coolpix P2 5.1MP Digital Camera with 3.5x Optical Zoom (Wi-Fi Capable) Review

Nikon Coolpix P2 5.1MP Digital Camera with 3.5x Optical Zoom (Wi-Fi Capable)

I read all these reviews and cannot FOR THE LIFE OF ME understand all the crying and whining about the WiFi mode. I keep hearing how "complicated" and "annoying" it is, but this is just plain WRONG. I actually set my WiFi up yesterday, and do you want to know how long it took me? About a minute. Pop in the setup CD, click "wireless setup only", plug your camera in by the USB cable (you need only do this the first time to set up! The setup CD will give you all the directions, just follow along), install it (takes all of a few seconds), choose your connection mode, name, and icon, and you're DONE. Then unplug the USB cable (you now no longer need it!), rotate the click-wheel at the top of the camera to wifi-mode, click "ok" and VOILA (you'll see the WiFi antenna flash blue). Easy as that, and it will download all of the images in your camera at a fast speed without any wires needed. How in God's name are people making this out to be a big deal?
Read your manual and you'll be fine. I did my homework for literally months and ended up choosing this model. I know cameras and this is easily the best deal for the money. Do get familiar with the scene modes, they're absolutely phenomenal and there is something for every shot and angle. Each scene mode has a choice of 3 different effects, which is really nice. The variety of shots you will be able to take is second to none. 5 MP is a perfect compromise for image quality, resolution, and price. Nikon as always is top-rate. Photography is something that seems to run in the family and when my grandfather approved this camera, I knew it was truly great.
The screen on this thing is AMAZING. 2.5 inches! The loss of the viewfinder is something you won't even notice, the LCD is a far more accurate tool anyway. Erasing pictures is simple, operating the zoom is a piece of cake, and the Zoom Nikkor lense is one of the best on the market, (along with the SchneiderKreuznach lenses on the Kodaks and the Carl Zeiss lenses on the Sonys). Nothing against Canon's Elph line because they're amazing, but the lense on the Nikon is better and I honestly feel that the Canon models are overpriced. Ever picked up an SD400 or 450? They feel far too tiny and almost flimsy. The SD500 and 550 are a bit better, but there's virtually NOTHING to grip. Trust me, when you want to really focus on a subject and get the perfect shot, the LAST thing you want is not to have a firm enough grip on your camera and have it slip. This also increases the likelihood of dropping it, which is never a good thing! Some complain that the red-eye reducer takes too long. The flash will go off three times in red-eye-eliminator mode, so if you're taking a picture of your dog, turn it OFF, (because the subject will have moved by then). For people though, it will be fine. The P2 comes with great software and it will take all of 5 seconds to remove red-eye manually once uploaded if the time before the final flash goes off bothers you too much. I've heard whining about the P2's size...why? Pick one up if you can look at one in person. They're wondefully compact yet still have a heft to them, and a very substantial hand grip that doubles as the battery casing. It's all metal and beautifully designed, the worksmanship speaks for itself. Nikon is a great choice, and I also recommend Olympus and Kodak (Kodaks are the king of easy-to-use cameras).
Even full price for this camera is worth it (400 dollars), though you'll see it advertised from between 250-350, which are very fair prices. You're going to love it, it's a very capable little machine that will take you gorgeous pictures. Nothing is off-limits and there is a scene mode for any situation. I have NO regrets. The rechargable battery is good to have and will save you money. I HIGHLYYYY recommend you purchase LCD screen covers to protect your very-large LCD screen. These can be bought on Ebay in packs of 3 for about 10 dollars with shipping.

As one of the smaller digital cameras on the market, the Coolpix P2 combines a high-quality optical zoom lens with a range of automatic and preset shooting modes that will satisfy the most discerning of point-and-shoot photographers. With an 5.1-megapixel CCD, and a high quality 3.5x optical zoom Nikkor 3x ED glass lens, plus a 4x digital zoom for a total zoom of 14x, the Coolpix P1 can produce stunning prints up to 16 x 20-inch prints simply and easily. The Coolpix P2 also features built-in WiFi connectivity, which means that you can communicate wirelessly to either your computer or, through the use of an optional Wireless PD-10 Printer Adapter (sold separately), directly to your printer. This unique WiFi image transfer ability not only make it more convenient to off-load your images, it also permits a unique "live slide show" capability that is great for parties, weddings, and any other special occasion. Weighing a mere 6.4 ounces with the battery and memory card loaded, the Coolpix P2 is truly a "take anywhere" camera. With over 16 automatic and preset shooting modes, you'll always be sure to get the precise shot you're looking for. Best of all, "advanced scene modes" are available for 11 of the 16 presets and allow the user to customize the final image by providing a 3-level selection for enhanced creativity and control. Not to be outdone, the Coolpix P2 can also record high-quality movies at a rate of up to 30 frames per second. There are a total of seven movie modes to choose from, including six with the capability to record sound as well as a time-lapse mode that enables the user to capture events occurring over an extended period of time. The camera also features a built-in flash with six modes, and a built-in mic and speaker for including sound in videos and playback from the camera. A large, incredibly bright, 2.5-inch color LCD display and user-friendly interface means that you don't have to take the extra effort to get up to speed with the camera's functionality. Just power it up, and you'll be ready to go in no time. Other advanced features include Nikon's Exclusive Feature System, which helps turns "pictures" into "photographs." An In-Camera Red-Eye Fix takes "red-eye reduction" a step further by remove red-eye directly in the camera. Face Priority AF automatically focuses on faces for great portraits, and the D-Lighting feature offers in-camera repair of dark images. The included rechargeable battery gives you up to 180 images on a single charge. In short, the Coolpix P2 is perfect for novice users or anyone looking for a point-and-shoot camera that produces sharp, colorful photos with great ease of use. For advanced shooters, the P2 can server as a great "take-anywhere" snapshot camera. What's in the Box Nikon Coolpix P2, rechargeable Li-ion battery EN-EL8, battery charger MH-62, USB cable, audio-video cable, strap, and PictureProject CD-ROM.

HP Deskjet 460CB Mobile Printer with Battery Included Review

HP Deskjet 460CB Mobile Printer with Battery Included
Average Reviews:

Driver loaded first time no problem, battery charged quickly, test print came out perfect, test printed a 8.5 x 11 photo, it took about a minute and came out great on the included standard ink. The printer weight is 5.4 lbs with the battery installed it's not light but it's not that bad either. I owned a Canon portable, it lasted 10 months and had to be replaced under warranty, I quickly sold the replacement, they are slow and noisy, they cost way more, the ink cartridges are very tiny and expensive, I had to refill my own to afford to use it, the HP cartridges hold twice as much ink and are cheaper. If you've got money to burn then get the Canon, if not this HP is a deal and you get a battery with it, what good is a mobile printer without a battery?

HP iPAQ hx2795 Pocket PC (FA676B#ABA)

(Originally intended title was "It makes the iPod look like a complete waste of $$$...harsh but true")
I have been using my Ipaq hx2795b for a couple of months now, and at first it did have frequent freeze-ups and battery draining issues, especially when using the SD card. But once I updated the BIOS (ROM) to the latest version (you can find it at hp's website), everything works smoothly ever since. Also remember to use the latest version of ActiveSync (4.2 so far), and not the one that comes with the installation CD, and try to use the sync with MS Office Outlook 2003 instead of Office 2002 on your PC/laptop. For the above inconveniences, I'm taking one star off the rating. I believe that's about it, and you're all set to start installing tons of software on your Ipaq.
I use it literally for EVERYTHING (well, phone and camera excluded) -that is, agenda, customer database, ebooks, reference books, review powerpoint presentations, wi-fi, email, msn messenger, bluetooth, watch videos (you can watch entire DVD movies on it, after encoding of course), music (in my opinion it sounds even better than the iPod, was it the earphones?), games, anyway, you name it. I find the Windows Mobile 5 OS quite stable, and the interface feels pretty much the same as using the ordinary desktop Windows. The speed is impressive too. Battery life is good and it charges fast. The display is bright and clear, though I would have preferred a slightly larger screen. The fingerprint reader device is cool. I personally don't use it though, because it delays the otherwise instant power-on of the handheld, but it stands as a great security feature for sure.
Some recommended accessories to enhance your Ipaq are: SD card (i'm already using 70% of its 2GB storage capacity, so I'll soon be looking for an additional CF card; I think it's less cumbersome to have both cards simultaneously in the handheld than to have to switch cards using the same slot), an extra sync/charger/car adapter (I have the BELKIN Ipaq Sync Charger F8Q0003HP), a leather carrying case, and of course, screen adhesive overlays. Some useful or must-have software are: Adobe Reader for PPC, iSilo, Resco explorer, Resco photo viewer, Resco audio recorder, Resco radio, Clearvue presentation, spb Pocket Plus, Trancreative Magic Button, Touch Notes, Pocket informant, TCPMP the core pocket media player (it plays every format that the Windows Media Player doesn't, which are a bunch).
Overall, I'm very happy with my Ipaq hx2795b. For those thinking to own a handheld for the first time but have put off till now (like myself), this is the right moment to do it. The technology in handhelds, both hardware and software-wise, has reached to a level of reliable stability, that makes it worthy enough to try on one of these literally do-it-all gadgets.

BigC Dino-Lite AM413ZT Portable Digital Microscope with Built in Polarizing kit Review

BigC Dino-Lite AM413ZT Portable Digital Microscope with Built in Polarizing kit
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
There are a lot of less expensive USB microscopes on the market, today, that are fine if you are just looking for an educational toy. There are also much more expensive industrial/laboratory microscopes.
The AM413ZT is neither a toy, nor a major investment. It provides clean, sharp images at different magnifications and is easy to use. In our applications, the polarizing filter allows us to alter the contrast between different mineral constituents in our samples, aiding in identification. We most frequently use magnifications of either 60X or 230X and we are getting very good images at both settings. Its price is less than half of what is being asked for other microscopes we have seen demonstrated that were neither as good nor as simple to use.
This is a very good, effective tool for the serious commercial user who does not want or need to make a major investment in higher-end lab equipment.

ASUS Skype Videophone Touch SV1TW (White) Review

ASUS Skype Videophone Touch SV1TW (White)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is definitely a huge leap forward from the voice only based standalone skype phones (Linksys and Philips), however, I would definitely give this device 5 stars if:
1. It would have a video out on the back, it already has mic in and headphones input but if you have a bigger monitor you want to connect the output to during conversation to get a bigger picture, there is no way to do this
2. Add bluetooth! So that it's easy to pair a bluetooth headset to this unit
3. What's up with the battery that lasts 20 minutes? I mean common ASAS, you guys built me the 1005HE that holds for like 9.5 hours what is this 20 minute battery?
4. Put at least 1.3 megapixel camera
Other than above 4 items the phone is great, it's robust and well made, the top tilts to accommodate people of different height or seating position. Sound quality is definitely better than in my asus EEE PC. Easy to connect to wireless network. Like I said, great start but can be better.

Backlit keyboard is the best feature and makes using this laptop far more versatile. Unfortunately, the keyboard itself is not as effective for everyday use. The center area of the keyboard is not as well supported so you have to punch the keys a lot harder to get them to register on the display. A large HDD (320GB) and 4gigs of user memory, along with Intel Centrino 2.0GHz CPU, make this 64bit Vista PC performance's better than most laptops in the under $600 price range. The WEI is only 3.7 because the integrated graphics support, although "accelerated", is not as good as most full size Desktops with dedicated plug-in video card. The 16" LCD is a true 16x9 widescreen display and looks absolutely stunning. Also built-in to this laptop is 1.3MP webcam, microphone and two speakers. HDMI output connector is a nice bonus. Only thing missing is Bluetooth support and a BluRay DVD player, but at a significantly higher cost. Internet WiFi access is very fast and makes for a seemingly much more reliable connection than my even my two year old high end desktop PC. All in all a very good value and one of the few Notebook PC available at any price with a backlit keyboard.

The N810 WiMax Edition, if you can even get your hands on it, is a fun little device. It is just like the regular (blue) N810, but with a WiMax radio tuned to 2.5 GHz for WiMax service provided by Xohm (the only WiMax provider). The device is not locked to WiMax, but any provider at 2.5 GHz.
The battery life is good, but with the WiMax signal, the connection drops when driving around, but the Xohm service is brand new (less than a month old at this time of writting) and I'm sure there will be improvements in the works.

I received this computer as a holiday gift. These are some of the features I found most amazing about the T4220.
- Shock Censor Utility: If you drop your computer, the internal memory and hard drive contract, assuring less memory loss. It automatically detects when it is falling and adjusts accordingly. You can set this to Sensitive, Normal, Mobile, or Custom.
- OmniPass: Have to remember lots of passwords to different websites and accounts? Not anymore. With OmniPass and the T4220 Fujitsu notebook, you can set all of your different passwords to either one master password or a fingerprint. I liked this especially because when I go to different websites where I have an account like Hotmail, Amazon, eBay, Facebook, or Myspace, a prompt asks me to scan my fingerprint and then it inputs my password for me.
- Windows Vista: The T4220 notebook comes with Windows Vista Basic. I think that this version is fine for just normal notebook purposes, but you can always upgrade the software to fit your needs.
- 180 degree Screen: This notebook is a tablet notebook. This means that you can fold the screen down and write on it with the included pen. This notebook can fold either right or left and has easy to understand lights to tell you which way to turn it back to normal. This works especially well with the included Evernote Plus, which translates your hastily scribbled notes into Microsoft Word text. Now you can take notes and have them all on one device.
- Built in WiFi: With my old computer, a Dell Latitude D505, I got no bars of WiFi in the corners of my house. However, with this notebook with built in WiFi, I got as many bars in the corner of my house as I did with my old computer sitting next to the router. There is also a slot to put in a WiFi card if you have a special card, but the built in is so good, I don't see why you would need an additional one.
- Speakers and Sound: The sound quality of this computer is absolutely amazing. It truly sounds as if you are in a stadium or concert hall. You can also change the speaker settings based on the environment that you are in. They are perfect for DVDs or music.
Overall, I give this computer a five out of five based on performance, design, difficulty of use, and already included features. If you are looking for a Microsoft computer, I strongly recommend this one.

I purchased mine with Windows XP home on it. VERY fast UI... I was actually amazed by its speed out of the box.
'Cube UI' is junk, dont bother using it, in fact you can safely remove pretty much everything that is installed on it out of the box. The only thing you should keep is the viliv manager software, so you can run the calibration and such.
Worked great out of the box, locked up 2 or 3 times... its to be expected.
I installed Vista home premium on it, took quite a while to get it up and running. If you plan to do the same, here is how to do it 100% trouble free. Grab a 8 or 16 gig jump drive. Copy all the vista files from it, onto the jump drive using a desktop pc. Download the Vista service pack 1 and service pack 2, OFFLINE install files, copy them onto the jump drive. Download ALL of the s5 drivers from the myviliv site, put them on the jump drive.
Mine was formatted as fat32, you need to run Convert Disk to make it a NTFS drive, before you can install Vista. This takes about an hour. DO NOT convert the disk if you dont plan on installing vista immediatly, as XP is unstable on NTFS, on this device.
THEN do the install, takes about an hour. Once installed DO NOT try to install the drivers yet. I did, and thats why I had such a harsh experience. Install sp1 and sp2, takes about 3 hours total. THEN install the drivers.
If you try to install the drivers without sp1 and sp2 installed, you will have a massive amount of headaches and wierd issues. Once sp1 & sp2 were installed, completely flawless install.
Battery life: is amazing. I use it all day long, I charge my cell phone off it. It is very impressive.
Storage: The hard drive in it is NOT a solid state, but for the price, what do you expect? The partitioning is a little odd. the c drive is about 30 gigs, the d drive is about 20, and the rest is the emergency system restore.
Screen size: 4.8" screen, very tiny, but amazingly crisp. Everyone is amazed at how readable it is. The resolution on it is 1024x600 out of the box, with Vista installed I can set it to 1024x768. At the higher resolution the touch screen is a little off, and calibrating doesn't help.
Wifi: Very good range/speed. Much better than I had expected.
Connectivity: It has a USB Host and USB link. I couldnt get the USB link to work on my Desktop pc running Windows 7 64 bit. I had it partially working on XP Pro. I could add/remove files on it, but I couldnt access the internet while linked.
USB host works perfect, no issues with keyboards, web cams, etc.
Media: It comes with K-Lite codec pack installed, I would install the Mega Codec Pack.
Portability: Simply awesome, its a little large for a 'pocket device', especially when compared to a cell... But its a FULL REAL COMPUTER, that can actually fit in your pocket.
Speed: It is surprisingly fast. I wouldnt expect to be able to play modern games on it, older ones should work great.
Browser: No issue playing you tube videos, or browsing the web, it has a REAL web browser on it, not the junk that comes on cell phones.
Portable browsing: No issue installing PDA net and tethering it to my myTouch. Can get internet access, anywhere that my cell phone has reception, by tethering it with a usb cable.
GPS: It has one, but I haven't installed any navigation software yet.
Bluetooth: Has it, but havent tried it yet.
Stylus: They give you a 'pick' that is attached to a leash to use as a stylus... It is junk, grab a 2.99 stylus and be trouble free.
Virtual Keyboard: I disabled the Haptic feedback, and the battery life got even better. The keyboard is a bit clunky, but does work, and is slightly better than the usual virtual keyboard software you find on similiar devices. My only real complaint about the virtual keyboard, is when your trying to type in something and you get a drop down of suggestions, this will always block the virtual keyboard, and you have to close and reopen it. If you install Vista, you might consider using the 'Tablet PC Input' instead.
Supposedly you can re-program one of the buttons on the device, I haven't figured out how yet. There are 4 buttons and 1 joystick like button on the unit. They all support short/long keypresses, to do different actions. A short keypress on the [menu] button, brings up the start menu. a long press, allows you to use the joystick as a mouse. That is one of the coolest things they have done. You will have to use this when installing vista, as the touch screen drivers wont install until you install SP1 and SP2.
Another suggestion, change your power options so that 'Closing the lid' and 'hiting the power button' put it to sleep, instead of shutting it down. The suspend/resume speed is fantastic. Litterally 2 or 3 seconds to shut down/start up. Actual cold boot takes 5 to 10 minutes.
Overall, I have to say 'Viliv, you did an amazing job!'. If it was more expensive, i'd say 'Not sure if its worth it' but at 500 its very well worth it.... Perfect price point for it.
Only thing I would like on it, that it doesnt have... is an SDHC slot. I am a little disapointed that it doesnt have one.
Also, if you are trying to decide between this and the 600 dollar promo version, you might want the promo version. Its the exact same hardware, but they give you accesories that cant be bought in store. I had to make my own mounts using plexi, a heat gun, and a dremmel. Still havent found a decent hard case for it yet. Currently I am using a soft case that is made for a PSP... and while its a very snug fit, it does work.
Overall, I am VERY glad I made this purchase. This is, in my opinion the best on the market at this price point.

Ok, you see the other reviews, great board, tons of great features, all true. HOWEVER!!!!! The software will not work if you install Vista directly on and then try to load the motherboard software. The GOOD NEWS is that if you install to XP first, no problemo! The board does run fast, quiet and generally cool. The ASUS site has all updated drivers, so it's only the initial install. Of course, if ASUS now sells the board with the updated drivers, then great, but be advised to check out the version of software the board comes with, or be prepared.

Grace Digital Wireless Hi-fi Internet Radio Tuner featuring Pandora and NPR (GDI-IRDT200) Review

Wow! What a sweet device this is for the even the not so techo-inclined. Installation was a breeze as there were only 2 cables to hook-up: power, and RCA jacks. I piped it into my receiver and hit the power button and bingo! it found my network over it's installed handy dandy wireless network adapter (G). It prompted me for my password, which I entered (by turning the knob, which was kind of a pain) and it connected no problem. You can also wire your connection through the network cable slot in the back, however, no network cable was included.
After that, I chose internet radio and I had choices galore. The real beauty of this device is how you can personalize it. Got a Pandora account? Pipe it through this baby with ease. How about Live365? You can do that too. Want to search the internet radio via genre? No sweat. Absolutely amazing I tell you.
I created my Grace account, added stations online and podcasts and after unplugging the device and plugging back in (yah, they tell you to do that so it updates the streams), my customization was found on the device and away I went.
Here is the absolute frosting on the cake...I'm now streaming all of my music from my laptop and external hard drive to this device! Sort by genre, album, album artist, create a queue, you name it, this thing can do it. This kills the Windows Media Center that never worked right with my 360.
Who knew you could have so much fun with a radio??

viliv N5 Series - 32GB SSD, 1.33GHz Intel Atom CPU, Windows 7 Starter Handheld MID/UMPC Review

I am extremely impressed with the build quality, size and the screen. The reviews I read before purchasing mentioned that the build quality was great, but I had no idea that it would be such a rock solid device.
I've owned small computers, netbooks and even a Vaio UX 390N UMPC, but the clamshell design of the Viliv N5 makes it look like an eyeglass case, so I can slip it in and out of my pocket or just carry it by hand and it doesn't look like I'm carrying a computer around. I really feel comfortable taking this with me to any restaurant, gym or wherever and it doesn't seem awkward to have a computer with me. I'm a web developer and occasionally things happen while I'm away from the office that I need to attend to, so I used to carry my laptop with me all the time, but the straw that broke the camel's back, so-to-speak, was when I carried my laptop around Key West for a whole day and I couldn't enjoy my trip there because my back was hurting the entire time. Now, I can just slip the Viliv N5 into the pocket don't even have to think about it.
Battery life so far has been decent. 4 hours is the norm with the screen on full brightness, but I don't see reason I couldn't get 6 hours by lowering the screen brightness and turning off wifi.
The features I love about the Viliv N5 are:
- Small size (it's only an inch longer than my HTC Evo 4G phone)
- full keyboard (the keyboard is a little tricky to type on, but you can touch type if you have small fingers). I usually find it easiest to hold the N5 with both hands and thumb type.
- the thumbpad is amazing - it's very easy to move the mouse pointer around the screen - in some ways it is better than a mousepad
- the screen is bright and crisp - even though the text is small, I can see everything clearly.
- it's a full Windows 7 computer so I can install all of the programs that I use regularly with no limitations
- I thought the 32GB SSD wouldn't have enough available space left over with Windows 7 installed, but it came with 13GB free out of the box, which is more than enough for me
- Wakes up in 5 seconds from sleep
The things that are minor annoyances are:
- Boots quickly from a cold boot, but sometimes the screen doesn't come on after waking up from sleep, so I have to turn it off and back on again to get the screen to come on. This is a minor annoyance because it only happens occasionally.
- Windows 7 starter edition is really limited. I knew Windows 7 starter was a stripped down version, but I didn't realize how stripped down. Starter Edition doesn't even allow you to change your desktop background! What the? By default it will show a nice Windows background with a Windows logo, but other than that you can only change it to solid colors (black, etc). This isn't a major issue, but it sucks that I can't use a unique photo as my background image.
- Bluetooth dial up networking doesn't work consistently. I probably should blame this on Windows 7 starter too. Let me first say that I have no problems with tethering the Viliv N5 to my HTC Evo using a USB cable and then using PDANet to connect the Viliv N5 to the internet, so that's working great. However, if I want to avoid the USB cable and use Bluetooth DUN instead, I can't do it - I've only been able to get bluetooth DUN working once and it only stayed connected for a minute or two. I have no idea what's causing this, but I've never had this issue with any other computer, so it's either something with the Bluetooth drivers or it's Windows 7 starter. Either way, I'm disappointed that this isn't working because it was an important feature to me. (I can pair the Viliv N5 with my phone without any trouble; it's only the DUN that isn't working). Kind of makes me wish I'd purchased the 3G version, but I'm sure I'll eventually get this working, even if I have to upgrade to a different version of Windows 7.
- I use a Lexmark 1420 network printer and have not had any problems installing drivers for it on any other computer. However, the Viliv N5 will not recognize the printer, will not fully install the drivers, will not print a test page from my printer. Maybe there's something unique about this particular printer that Windows 7 Starter doesn't like, but whatever the issue it's definitely an annoyance that I can't get network printing working.
With all of this said, the Viliv N5 is the best UMPC I've experienced. I've been shopping for UMPCs since the first OQO was announced, so I've been in the market for something like this for the last 10 years. It's amazing to me that someone has finally created a near-perfect UMPC with all of the features I've wanted even when the trend seems to be heading to tablets, etc., there is definitely a need for a product like this.
I believe the only weak-link with the N5 is Windows 7 Starter, but this could be remedied by installing Home or Professional edition, so I'm not taking any points away from the N5 because of this.
I was on the fence about getting this for awhile; I truly thought it would be a novelty and something I would only use occasionally, but I've been carrying the N5 with me everywhere and even using it in different rooms around the house because it doesn't ever get in the way. It's definitely a computer you can take anywhere.

VIZIO M550NV 55-inch Full HD 1080p 120Hz LED LCD HDTV Review

We bought this on Memorial Day at a local store - price was a little cheaper than Amazon, plus no shipping cost, so we got a great deal. First off, the packaging for this TV is HUGE - the only way we could have put this in our van would have been to lay the third row seats down AND take out one of the 2nd row seats, as the box is too wide to fit in the aisle between them. Luckily we have a truck and had no problems fitting in it. If you plan to put this TV in a cabinet/entertainment center, you'd better buy a big one. Due to the shape of the frame, which includes the speakers on either side, this TV is wider than a typical 55" - it measures about 55 1/2" at its widest point, so is too wide for most cabinets that say they will fit a 55" TV. Wall mounting or mounting on an open table setup would be no problem. OK, enough about the size of this monster - you get the picture :)
Setup was a snap - got it out of the box, hooked up a Toshiba DVD recorder/VCR combo via HDMI and a standard def DirecTV DVR to the composite A/V (no HD DVR yet). On a HD signal, this TV has an incredible picture - bright image, great blacks (some TVs have problems with dark/night scenes, but this one handles them wonderfully). Standard-def images (480i) can be grainy, but that's simply a factor of size vs. resolution and is only really noticed if you're close to the screen. Viewing from across our family room (about 12' from tv to couch) is fine. We also connected an antenna to pull in over-the-air signals. The tuner is pretty good, and picked up all the UHF networks in our area, about 30 miles away. The local CBS affiliate broadcasts on a VHF frequency and we can't pick it up - but we can't get it on any of our TVs, so I can't say this tv is any better or worse in that regard.
Connection to our wireless network was quick and easy, and streaming from Netflix, Vudu and Amazon works great. I haven't tried any of the other services available, but there are plenty to choose from. The Netflix software on this TV is better than on the LG blu-ray player we have connected to another TV - this one will allow you to find movies that aren't in your instant queue, while the LG will ONLY play items in your queue, so that's a bonus. Vudu plays well in SD or 720 format, but frequently pauses in 1080p - we need a faster internet connection to support full HD downloads. DivX movies downloaded in full 1080p look fantastic when played from the Toshiba player over HDMI.
This TV comes with a remote that connects to the TV via Bluetooth. It remembers which equipment is connected to the various inputs, and automatically changes the controls to match the input equipment - really nice! I found that it will control all my equipment, and since it works via bluetooth, you don't have to have direct line-of-sight to the TV. Wish that the bluetooth part worked for my satellite equipement too! Programmable remotes will operate this TV, but depending on how old they are, they may not be able to hit all the features of the tv - our older directv remotes will operate the basic features, but only the newer models will change the input source - so you may want to use the remote that came with the TV. We have smaller kids, and wanted to limit their use of the tv remote, because it has a slide-out keyboard similar to those on some cell phones to make posting to facebook (one of the apps that comes on the tv) easy. Since our youngest is 5, we thought it might be best to keep that remote out of harm's way.
All in all, this is a fabulous TV for the money - it's an LED for less than many LCDs of smaller size. I was considering the new Sharp LED with the 4th 'yellow' pixel, but after seeing it in person, couldn't justify paying nearly 50% more for a smaller (52") screen. The LED runs mucher cooler than plasma - while shopping for TVs we walked through a local Sears store, and you could feel the heat radiating off the plasma screens - that alone steered us away from plasma. LED seemed too high until we found this Vizio - we'd gotten a 32" Vizio with 1080p capability for our bedroom at Christmas, so knew that the Vizio had the quality of the bigger names, but without the price premium of Sony, Samsung or LG. When we get ready to replace our other tube TVs, we'll be looking at the Vizio M-series as our top choice - just in a smaller size!

I have owned my N810 (affectionately named N8 - or Nate) for about 6 months now and it has become invaluable to me. These are the activities with which I use it:
- communication, using Google Voice, or Skype
- receiving and sending email, either via included email client, or web-based email
- web browsing
- watching and saving YouTube videos
- tracking and mapping via GPS unit
- taking notes
- games/entertainment with OS2008 games, or using Palm Emulator and my favorite old Palm Pilot games
- listening to music; sound quality is EXCELLENT for a hand-held (and I'm a musician, and picky)!
- recording voice notes
- taking photos and making small videos for online use
- keeping recipes; its small size make it excellent for reading in my tiny kitchen...and I can listen to music at the same time!
- reading eBooks
- text messaging via Google Voice/wifi
There are only a couple of cons that I have found so far. The front-facing camera, intended for use in video conferencing, makes photography tricky at best. This is acceptable to me, though, since it was never meant to replace a digital camera. The other is that the O/S will require a learning curve for the average point-and-click Windows user. While the device is definitely easy to pick up and use with the installed software, and loading new programs from either the Nokia website or the maemo site using the application manager, most more detailed tasks will require a certain amount of learning for most; in short, it ain't Windows :).
There are numerous other uses and apps for this device. Even after 6 months I feel I've hardly scratched the surface of its possibilities. It is always on the road with me, has replaced my laptop on weekend trips, and replaced my more cumbersome bedtime books and magazines. It has saved me money in this way, and also in cell phone/texting costs; it has already paid for itself - probably twice over.
In short, N8 has replaced both my Zune and my Palm Pilot, and become itself an irreplaceable part of my life.

Sangean WFR-1 WIFI Internet Radio Review

Sangean WFR-1 WIFI Internet Radio
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
An internet radio opens up an almost overwhelming number of broadcast streams and for someone like me, who enjoys classical music, there is a wonderful choice of commercial free stations worldwide. I own (or have owned) a number of internet radios;a Slim Devices Squeezebox(!), a Roku Soundbridge R1000, a Revo Pico portable, a Receiva AE and a Sangean WFR-20, but the new Sangean WFR-20 is almost the best of the bunch (I will explain why it is not unequivocally the best in a minute!).
The Sangean WFR-1 is beautifully finished with a polished wooden case, an array of controls on the front panel, including on/off, volume and equalizer (tone control). They are not particularly intuitive but better than the single knob on the WFR-20. There is also a substantial and full function remote control, resembling that of the Roku, rather than the credit-card sized devices that come with Pico and the WFR-20. The amber display is larger than those found on any other set but the Roku (more about this later).
Set-up was very easy (I use an ethernet wired connection to my router but it works with my wi-fi network) and it was playing within a few minutes of unpacking. There is also an FM tuner with a separate antenna. Sound is excellent and far superior to any of the other sets I have owned except Roku, which is almost as good. For this unit, Sangean has gone to Frontier Silicon rather than to Receiva for their streams. Nevertheless, there is an abundance of stations, including Real format so I can get all the BBC channels (a big negative with Roku). There is little delay in receiving streams after switching on and Frontier has a good website where you can set up favorites and add new stations. Playing stored music from my computer via Windows Media Player has been easy and more consistent than with the WFR-20 or AE.
Now for the downside. Despite a larger display that claims to offer four lines of text, there is no control for format (as Roku provides) or for brightness (which the WFR-20 offers). Most frustrating is that Frontier do not stream program information with the station! There is plenty of room for this on the display and such information on content is invaluable because some stations do not provide this audibly; the WFR-20 does this well because it uses the Receiva streams but it would require reprogramming of software by Frontier to have this on the WFR-1. Frontier tell me it is being discussed but they have no plans for implementation! Surprisingly, Sangean, although the 800lb gorilla here, do not seem inclined to pressure Frontier. I have had several conversations with the amiable Selwyn, whom you reach quite easily when you call up technical support at Sangean, and he agrees totally with me and suggests that I contact Frontier (which I did) or write a review to make this point - which I am doing!
So in summary, this is an excellent product with great acoustic performance but marred by small, but irritating, shortcomings in the display. As a result, I gave it 3 stars rather than 5.
