(More customer reviews)I was getting frequent 5-10 second brown outs in my community and it was causing havoc with my mirrored RAID disk array when my PC would loose power; would take 3 hours to rebuild and verify data integrity. My PC has a newer Active PFC power supply and would not work with my older UPS which did not output a pure sine wave. I also usually have one or two other dedicated servers I use for software development.
Did some research and settled on this APC UPS. The UPS has worked flawlessly. Keeping all my expensive servers online during the brown outs and saving a ton of time from the RAID verify/rebuilds that I was suffering from.
This unit comes out of the box setup as a rack mountable UPS, but the conversion to stand-up tower mode is very easy to do. Just be aware that this thing is REAL heavy and requires you to flip it around a bit to do the conversion. I ended up with a couple of bruises from resting the unit on my legs. No special power outlets are required. This unit uses the normal household plugs.
I have a constant 300-400 watt power requirement with my main PC on; 1200 watt power supply, 4 hard disks, ATI 5800 series graphics card. If I turn on my other two servers I have a 800 watt drain with all 3 computers on. UPS reports 40 minutes of stand-by power if I just use my main PC. It reports 22 minutes of standy-by power if I have all 3 computers running. The front panel LCD display reports a lot of information including current watt usage, stand-by power time, etc...

UPS came in new condition like expected and haven't had any problems with it. This one in particular comes with the AP9617 network card which just requires the device utility and a serial connection to configure. Everything is working great so far. This one also comes with rails for a 2 post or 4 post rack.
Would definitely buy again if we need more power.

Pros-Excellant specs, does what it is rated to do. Very similar to the S model but 1/3 the price. Fairly easy setup process. Adequate wattage for my system.
Cons-Heavy and has large case due to battery. Need sturdy shelf if setting on TV stand. Replacement battery is expensive, but compared to stereo system/TV replacement, probably worth it. Can dim the LED's but not the power button so can be somewhat distracting when watching movies in darkened room if the unit is directly under the TV.

(More customer reviews)To the above Reviewer... All you had to do is just take the 20 AMP plug off and put a 15 AMP plug on. Sure, you can not use the full load capacity but your run time will be great. I modded my own Smart UPA 2200VA over 7 years ago. I am on my second set of batteries with this thing. It still runs stable... Very few pieces of man-made equipment can you say this about. So do not let the plug deter you... or others. Plus it has full sine-wave output... not stepped sine-wave. For example with a stepped sine-wave output, on BATTERY POWER alone, if you plug a florescent bulb into it the bulb would turn on and off, if you were using a regular light bulb you might see it go dim/bright/dim/bright. The stepped sine wave output is a approximation of AC (alternating current) but the sine wave is virtually identical to the power that comes out of the wall. Sine Wave output requires more expensive electronics.

Our consoles, amps and electronic equipment NEVER need servicing due to power fluxuation related damage. Use one of these big 3000VA units for a 30A circuit, and it just works -- you forget about it until the lights blink! (More customer reviews)This item is BR1500, which also called RS model vs. the BX1500 called XS models. External battery BR24BP can be used for both BR1500 and BX1500. The capability to connect external battery is great, since that can help reduce the downtime when California experiencing "rolling black" in the summer.
There are basically 2 differences between the Back-UPS RS(BR1500) and the Back-UPS XS (BX1500) models besides their names.1. The Back-UPS RS models have both 1-line 2-wire phone/fax/modem data-line protection and 10/100base-T ethernet protection, where as the Back-UPS XS models only has 1-line 2-wire phone/fax/modem protection.
2. The Back-UPS RS models have both Boost* and Trim** as features of Automatic Voltage Regulation (AVR), where as the Back-UPS XS only has Boost. When the input voltage increases above the high transfer point of a Back-UPS XS model it will only go to battery.*AVR Boost: The UPS is compensating for a low utility voltage. While the UPS can run in this mode indefinitely without any negative impact on the UPS, the circuit should be checked by a qualified electrician if the utility voltage is consistently low.
**AVR Trim: The UPS is compensating for a high utility voltage. While the UPS can run in this mode indefinitely without any negative impact on the UPS, the circuit should be checked by a qualified electrician if the utility voltage is consistently high.
BX1500 does not have the AVR trim feature, when AC line voltage is higher than spec, it will switch over the battery power till the line voltage drops into the spec range.
Please note this is called "backup UPS", not the "smart UPS" line. Backup UPS does not produce pure sine wave. When power lost, it will take some milli-seconds to switch over to battery power. "Smart-UPS" produces sine wave and the output AC was from DC source all the time. When AC input lost, the AC output will not have any interrupt.
For most computers, the "backup-UPS" is good enough, since the power supply inside PC always have capacitors that can hold for about 100MS or longer. When "backup-UPS" switched over in about 20MS, the computer will continue operates without much impact. But for A/V equipment, this may be an issue, especially the output is not pure sine wave. I would not recommend use this UPS for A/V equipment.

(More customer reviews)This unit is really HEAVY with 4 12V 7.2AH batteries. It is in a very sturdy metal case and comes with vertical support brackets as well as rack mounting brackets.
When in standby use, it is TOTALLY silent AND cold... room temperature... no plastic smell or hot case typical of many plastic case lesser UPSs.
Only when the unit is delivering battery backup power does it become noisy because of a cooling fan that comes on only when it is delivering battery power. I do not use it to operate my computers in a power failure... used just to save files and shut down several computers when there is a power failure.
The supplied software seems to work fine to shut down computers and after that to shut down the UPS to conserve remaining battery charge.

(More customer reviews)We have a few of this UPS. They are pretty reliable, compared to those APC brand similar size UPS. The battery in this unit can last 10 minutes with load. After the original battery dead 3 years later, I open the battery door on the back, connect the battery wires to a large 50AH 12V Sealed Lead Acid Battery originally for solar power use.
This UPS is able to charge up the big battery -- it took days, but working great when AC lost -- this 50AH large battery will last few hours, instead if few minutes for two of our servers.
Do not use the regular lead acid car battery. They have different charge characters. Make sure use sealed lead acid batter, you will be pleased.

As to function, it has responded flawlessly to several brownouts / short interruptions in power. I have a Dell Studio XPS purchased at the beginning of 2010 and found out the hard way that the regular UPS I had (TrippLite Smart1500LCD SmartPro UPS) would not function due to the requirements of the power supply in my new PC. I read several articles about replacing the power suppply to overcome these problems, but decided that the wisest choice was to replace the UPS with one that provided true sine wave output that my PC expected. I have not been disappointed with my selection. I moved the old Smart1500LCD to one of my other PC's with less demanding power supply expectations, so I don't feel I wasted my prior investment.

(More customer reviews)The Chinese made (see photo) "CyberPower PR1500LCDRTXL2U Smart App Sinewave Green UPS - 1500VA/1125W AVR LCD SNMP/HTTP XL (Black)" arrived in a solid, well engineered box (see photo). The gross weight of the box is 42 Kg/92.5 lbs (see photo). On the whole, the unit appears attractive and well made as there were no noticeable blemishes and flaws on the finish and surface of the unit. In short, the product projects the appearance of having been assembled in a factory with well define processes and quality control measures.
On the electrical rating of the unit itself, I find the manufactures claim of 1125 watts of net output power a bit disingenuous. According to the affixed manufacturers electrical label, the device is UL rated to draw 12 Amps at 125 VAC or 1500 VA for a net output of 1125 Watts (see photo) with 75% efficiency. That works out to a total of 1440 VA at the wall plug and 1080 watts for a typical 120 VAC house and only 1320 VA and 990 watts for a house running on 110 VAC. Maybe they exist, but I don't know of any house that is operating at 125 VAC. Hence, presuming normal load and source conditions, it would be more forthright to advertise this device with a maximum output rating of 990-1080 Watts at 110-120 VAC.
The CyberPower PR1500, though called a "UPS" by name, is in fact not a true UPS and uninterrupted. This product, by electrical design, is not a double conversion device and therefore has a transfer time up to 6 milli seconds. A true UPS, with double conversion circuitry (AC-DC-AC) has zero transfer time and truly uninterrupted with AC line lost. But, because of noise levels, electrical efficiency issues and popular perception, CyberPower, APC and other manufactures include devices such as this under the heading of UPS.
The set up and configuration instructions are incomplete and uses very small hard to read type. Also no hard copy of the manual is supplied. The only manual available is one that can be down loaded or obtain from the supplied CDROM. Not all of my power backup applications are near a computer(s) and to presume so or to disregard other applications is a bit near sighted. As for tech support, twice this week I called the phone number listed on the company web site during normal working hours (1:30pm CST) and the phone rang for several minutes with no one answering.
Although not mentioned in the instructions, the front LED display block can be removed and rotated (see photo) to accommodate horizontal and vertical placement. To rotate the LED display block, one has to insert a flat tip (standard) screw driver into a small slot (see photo) and gently and carefully lift and extract the display block. The display block is attached in the rear with a ribbon cable to the face panel so be careful not to extend this part too far. Somewhat disappointing, given today's technology and ease to set, but the displayed input voltage is off by +2 VAC as per a Fluke 187 DVM.
The on/off switch has a plastic protective flip cover (see photo) to prevent accidental cycling of the AC source. This is a nice hardware feature and one that I feel other manufactures would do well to adopt. The unit comes with a 10 foot power cord with the AC prongs set in a protective plastic sheath (see photo). Batteries were fully charged on arrival.
As an observation, during the power cycle/transfer test and yet to be quantified, I noticed that the CyberPower PR1500 produces more inverter, cooling fan noise and vibration than the combined effect produced by an APC SU1400RM2U and SU2200RM2U sine wave units I have protecting an audio system. That's because the inverter fan in the CyberPower PR1500 is not a variable speed fan and operates at full speed at all times the inverter is functioning.
Though minor, at the rear of the unit, the space between the ether cable (line out) and the AC power cord grommet (see photo) is too tight. Even though I have small hands, I still found it necessary to use a flat tip device to depress the plastic ether cable release tab to disconnect the ether cable. This clearance problem could be alleviated if the chassis designers were to rotated the ether ports in their mounts by 180 degrees, placing the ether cable depression release tab opposite to that of the power cord grommet.
Included is a set of rack mount ears (see photo), pseudo dovetail, sliding rail kit (see photo) and shoes/chock (see photo) for freestanding. The steel rails and slides are of the non roller bearing type but still very functional. The two supplied plastic shoes for setting up the UPS in the vertical orientation can be separated (see photo) into four separate chocks for setting up the device in a horizontal non rack mount placement. For a heavy product, not having to be flush with the resting surface can be very helpful such that one can get their fingers underneath the unit for easer lifting.
The CyberPower PR1500 came supplied with a full complement of cables (see photo), two 9 pin serial cables, one USB 2.0 cable, one RJ-11 telephone cable, one RJ-45 CAT5 ether cable along with a CDROM containing the management software.
Last, a three display workstation (23", 24", 22") with an Intel i7 860 CPU, 8GB DDR3, XTC Memory Cooler, Radeon 5850, NEC USB3.0/SATA6 PCIe, AVer HDTV PCIe, 2TB RAID 01, 1.5 TB eSATA HD, Scythe Fan Controller, 3X 120mm fans, 3x 100mm fans, Ultra 600W PS, BT, GB ether hub, speaker bar drawing a total of 304Ws as per the UPS, reports having an estimated run time of 44 minutes with fully charged batteries.

I had an air conditioner on the same circuit for awhile, which is generally a bad idea with computer equipment. However, this UPS caught every single voltage fluctuation and protected my equipment every time the AC compressor kicked in. For linux integration, I use the 'apcupsd' package, which gives me temperature, load and voltage monitoring, as well as network broadcasts to other linux boxes to do network shutdowns.

- It plugs into 110 volt outlet, but it's a special type of plug (unlike the typical three-prong plug)!
- They are heavy. About 120 pounds per unit. Get help getting these out of the box.
- They only take up 2U rack space, which is great as they don't take up much real estate.
- Due to their weight, you probably want to put them at the bottom of your rack.
- You can remove the 40 pound battery pack out of the UPS (as recommended in the instructions), install the UPS shell, and then reinstall the battery.
- The front bezel is removed when the UPS is delivered to you.
- The UPS comes with mounting screws and brackets.
- The battery pack slides into an opening on the left side of the UPS, and the plug that connects to the battery is in the front, making future battery changes effortless.
- The included software works well. After installing the software Agents, the APC Server software recognized both units and reported on their vital stats. The two units were connected to two different physical servers.
- Build quality is good.
- The off button is slightly recessed, thus avoiding accidental turn-off of the UPS.
I have used APC UPSs for many many years, and trusted my clients' businesses with them (when I worked a different profession). Now I trust my business with them.

The only real downside is when the unit looses power, the fans that kick on are more than a little noisy... but they only come turn on when it looses power, so that's a pretty small downside... Oh, and only 4 of the outlets are back-up outlets. The other 4 are surge protected only. All in all, the unit is great. And [...] got it to me FAST! (More customer reviews)I purchased this UPS to isolate my computers and network disk drives from the AC line in a home office. The unit has worked well for that purpose. It has not had to engage too many times since I installed it, but it has seemed to do the job when it did. I chose this unit because I wanted a UPS that puts out a real sign wave AC waveform when it goes to battery operation. Most home office units put out more like a square wave (cheaper to produce) that does not work well with some modern computer power supplies that are power factor corrected. It fits neatly under my computer table, and shows basic functioning on the front panel. There is also software (both a personal edition and a business addition with more features) that runs on a computer connected through a USB or serial port. This software has very useful information including how much power is being drawn through the unit (on line or battery power), voltage, etc. as well as a history of actions taken. The only issue I found, and it is minor, is that my computer had trouble recognizing the connected UPS when interfaced through a USB hub. I talked to the manufacturer, who was very responsive, and told me it works better when plugged into a direct USB port on the computer. I tried that, and it has worked for me. The total load in my office is normally only about 300 watts as reported by the UPS, so it will power my office on batteries for more than 30 minutes--which almost always outlasts any power outage I experience. The software can be configured to notify the attached computer of a power failure (batteries engaged) and have it shut down the computer when the batteries get below a certain level. I have not had time to try this feature. There are also several test modes that can be accessed through the software to verify operation, for example, by simulating a power failure. I found this very useful to give me confidence in the unit. I am not sure what else to say. It provides sign wave backup AC at a reasonable price.

The next size up by the same company sports two fans, yet is quieter. I opened mine up and modded it to include a Panaflo medium speed fan that is much quiter and barely audible now. As a battery backup, it is perfect, you can unplug it and nothing flinches, and it works perfectly. The readouts show perfectly what percentage of the current you are using, and alerts if you overload the battery. Also displays a visable display of how much battery is left when operating solely on battery power. All in all the best bang for the buck...
