(More customer reviews)I was shopping for a small laptop so I could take notes in class, something with a long battery life. This little netbook seemed to fit the bill. The footprint was much smaller than my last laptop and it listed features that I thought would be helpful. In doing my research for a netbook, I've seen warnings that it is unwise to expect a netbook to perform like a laptop, as it is not really a full-blown computer- it's main goals are portability and battery life, so performance will be pared back to save CPU cycles. To counteract the diminished performance, I opted for the dual core Intel. I also purchased a 2 GB memory stick to squeeze more performance out of it.
After cycling the battery a number of times, trimming back some services and deleting most of the bloatware, I can easily get 8.5 hours of constant use out of this netbook. I'm sure that it pales in comparison to some of the newer laptops, but compared to my last six-year-old Toshiba, this thing flies! I more recently had a Sony Vaio VGN-SZ750N (which I absolutely loved) and this netbook even comes close to rivaling the Vaio's performance!
But to really get the most out of this netbook, I would advise using software that is less processor intensive like Foxit PDF Reader instead of Acrobat. Purchasing an inexpensive SDHC card helps to boost performance as well.
A word to the wise- you might be tempted to update the BIOS, because there are newer versions available. (My Asus shipped with 0607.) DON'T DO IT!! Upgrading to the newer BIOS versions will only reduce your battery performance! After I flashed the BIOS, my battery life went to 4.5 hours! and the Asus Support was absolutely useless!!! I spoke to five "technicians", where in some cases, I had to explain to them the process of doing a BIOS upgrade. No one would willingly put me in touch with their supervisor- two techs said they would transfer me to their supervisors, but then the line went dead. Go figure. Eventually I found a work around. But save yourself some anguish and just leave the BIOS alone.
