Brother MFC-9120CN High Quality Digital Color All-in-One Printer with Fax and Networking Review

I bought this Brother printer to replace an HP 2840 color laser. I like the Brother. It's smaller and quieter. It doesn't have to calibrate a couple times a day either. Scans are way faster than the HP and the scan quality if far better than the HP. Copies and printing are great, as expected. I don't ever fax so I can't address it's capabilities there.
I found one limitation with this printer that prevented me from giving it five stars. The printer can only be used as a network printer attached to the router via an Ethernet cable or it can be a workstation printer supporting one PC attached via a USB cable. If your using Windows networking to share the printer (i.e. it's connected to one PC via USB and enabled for print sharing), it's not supported. What? You got it. Brother won't let you share the printer other than to have it setup as a network printer attached to the router.
This is an issue if, like me, the router is nowhere near the printer and you want to do a lot of scanning using the PC based utilities vs. the little screen on the printer. You can scan with it as a network printer but you can only do it using the function keys on the printer itself. You lose the benefits of the PC software based approach. If you do any volume of scanning, you want the PC utilities enabled.
I was able to work around the problem and get it working like I wanted but it took a couple days working on and off to sort out. I called Brother technical support. They kindly told me the printer doesn't support what I wanted to do and I should return the product. What? Unbelievable!!
To get it to work as a shared USB attached printer, you have to go through the CD install process on each PC. That's okay once you understand that's the process.
The only remaining limitation is quickly setting up a temporary shared user. Say your brother-in-law is in town for the weekend and needs to print. He can't use the Windows "Add a printer" function and get to your Brother printer. You have to go find the CD and do a full install for your brother-in-law to print his Mapquest directions home. It's not a huge problem but Brother should not have designed it this way.
Hope it helps somebody.

Garmin zumo 665 Widescreen Motorcyle Navigator Review

Garmin zumo 665 Widescreen Motorcyle Navigator
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
After riding on a 1000 mile trip this week, here is my review of my first use of the 665 on a road trip. I ride about 20,000 miles per year and have used the Zumo 550 (my previous Garmin) for 45,000 miles the past 3 years, hence my comparison of the 665 to the 550.
Cons:
Major problem with the unit is the XM features shutting down unexpectedly. One of the reviews here experienced similar problems and was told by Garmin that the antennal cable is faulty and a new cable is being designed. I do not think the cable hardware is the issue. I believe it is the software. I experienced the same problem once before I left on the trip and was told by Garmin Tech to perform a hard reset of the unit by holding your index finger on the lower right corner as you turn the unit on until you see the message that "a reset will erase your data". You have to select "yes" or "no". Yes does reset the XM but erased all of my favorites, routes and settings. The unit reverts to the settings as it comes from the factory. Also, sometimes during this trip, I had to turn off the XM and then back on in order to reacquire the XM programming. I have the XM subscriptons for XM radio, NavWeather and NavTraffic. When XM stops, all of those are lost until a hard reset. I had to do hard resets at least 10 times on this trip-very, very inconvenient when riding a motorcycle down the road. I had bought the Zumo 665 to replace my Zumo 550 since the 665 has the Nexrad Radar display...very, very helpful when riding in the elements. The radar works fine when XM is working. When removing the until from the motorcycle mount, be sure it is off. Otherwise, you will have to hard reset to regain the XM features the next time you restart it in the motorcycle mount. Changing stations on the XM radio also stopped the XM features twice. I quit using the XM radio to listen to after the second time this occurred. Garmin has not offered a fix for these problems as of yesterday.
The XM local weather stations are far apart. On the 550, the stations were the closest aviation reporting stations. Example is riding through Louisiana local stations were Shreveport or Baton Rouge. I was closer to both Monroe and Alexandria at different times with no report. The 550 had a weather map so one could look ahead at stations all over the USA, touch one and get the weather and forecast. But, again, the 550 had no weather radar.
The unit shut itself down twice with no input.
Pressing hard on the lower right corner shuts down the unit. This corner needs touching to scroll through points of interest among other pieces of info. A light touch is required to avoid this.
The volume is lower for the XM radio relative to the 550. I can barely hear the radio at 70 mph. The 550 works well at 70 mph. I have the XM and the media player set at 100% along with the master volume set at 100%.
The text and display graphics are smaller than the 550 even though the total screen size is slightly bigger. Some of this is attributed to the amount of info on the screen that I select. I have not tried selecting less screen info yet to see if that helps. I like the info I have displayed now and hate to reduce it.
Pros:
Big pro is the Nexrad Radar when XM is working.
Lots more information such as showing lanes ahead so you can plan sooner where you need to be at intersections, especially on the freeway. Also, shows what the major overhead intersection signs display before you can see them-nice feature.
Lighter than the 550 and the shape makes it less likely to fall from your grasp when transferring it to another vehicle.
Bluetooth for touch free cell phone use. I use in the auto but not the motorcycle.
Conclusion:
Overall this unit, pricy compared to auto-only units, but waterproof and vibration proof will be acceptable once the software fix for XM is ready for upload to make that part of the unit reliable. At that point I will be ready to give the unit a 5.Follow up on July 27, 2010
Here is a follow up as of July 27, 2010. I sent this 665 back to Garmin, who then returned another to me (different serial number). First problem was the off/on switch sticks, so difficult to shut it down. It would turn on fine, but the switch would stick down in the unit.
As far as the XM goes, it worked fine one day on a 200 mile ride. The next day, it quit again with the same message-check XM antenna.
As of today, I have another RMA to return this unit for another. I am still very frustrated with unit-problems still exist. As of October 3, 2010
Garmin finally sent me an entire new until including new XM receiver and all accessories. I changed out the XM receiver and either that or the last software update seems to have cured all my previous issues. The XM subscriptions come up very quickly now, with the weather taking the longest, but never more than a couple of minutes. I'd highly recommend this motorcycle unit if you wish to have weather radar as your cruise down the road.

Brother MFC-9440CN Color Laser All-in-One Printer with Built-in Ethernet Network Interface Review

Brother MFC-9440CN Color Laser All-in-One Printer with Built-in Ethernet Network Interface
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I am very pleased with my Brother MFC-9440CN. Here are some positive and negative points:
-- Positive --
It is very easy to set up. I have it configured for access through Ethernet, and it was far easer to get set up than other network printers I've installed. Other setup options are easy to understand and set. It also supports USB and parallel connections. No printer cables are provided. Software installed quickly and without problems under Windows XP.
Black and white print quality is outstanding -- as good as any printer I've ever used.
The print speed is very good.
Is a very solid machine (it takes two people to lift it). It feels like it is built to last. (see negative comment below)
Copying is easy, and there is an option to collate copies of multipage documents (they call this "stacking").
Toner cartridges are reasonably priced on a cost/page basis.
It has a front auxiliary paper feeder that can be used for envelopes or other media. I find this extremely valuable.
I haven't had any paper jams.
I have successfully printed color CD labels using Neato label material. It handled the thick material fine, and the image was good.
Faxes are easy to send.
-- Negative --
It takes 30 seconds for the first copy to be completed when you do the first print while it's cold. I have an HP 2420d that gets the first copy out in 7 seconds flat.
The machine is heavy and large. Don't try to move it by yourself. (see positive note above).
The color saturation is not as deep as I would like. Don't misunderstand, the color is good, but when printing something like a bar chart with deep, solid colors, the colors aren't as deep as I would like. There may be some setting to adjust this, but I haven't found it.
The machine makes more noise than my HP 2420d, but the noise is not objectionable.
The machine draws a lot of power. My room lights dim when it is warming up.
Overall summary: Very fine color laser printer that is easy to set up, easy to use, fast, and solidly built. I have no regrets with the purchase.

Escort RedLine Ultimate Performance Dual-Antenna Radar Detector (Black) Review

Escort RedLine Ultimate Performance Dual-Antenna Radar Detector (Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I did a lot of research on the internet and watched every detector video I could find on utube. I narrowed the choice down to the escort 9500ix and the redline. I was impressed with the gps capability of the 9500ix that can use gps location to eliminate false detections. However, I also wanted the extended detection range of the redline unit. I bought them both and tried them for 2 weeks. My driving consists of 100 miles a day, of which 6 of those miles are city miles. Within a couple of days, the 9500ix had most of the false detections screend and muted for the city driving, which amounted to apx 4 false detections. However, it could not match the detection range of the redline on the highway. The redline was picking up pop signals 8 miles out, and did just as well in detecting from the front or rear. One friday evening I was clocked 4 times by radar, and once by laser on a 75 miles trip. I got my first audible alert for laser before I could actually see the sideways parked car off the road a mile ahead with a gun aiming out the window. I immediately braked and had no problem. I was also picking up instant on / off being used on cars miles before I saw them. A trooper was coming up behind me with his radar on, and again it detected him well before we saw each other. I keep this unit mounted low to the dash to make sure I have the best chance of picking up laser which is a tight beam aimed at your front tag or headlight. I guess you really get what you pay for. I have owned 4 units over the years and this one is awesome. It also works fine with false detections in the city. I can switch it to auto/no x, and 99% of the false signals are filtered out. For the remaining 1%, I just press the mute button on the power cord that plugs in on my console. I would rather do a quick mute, and keep the unit on highway mode for max range. I also like the way you can run with all the warning lights out and use the warning light on the power cord next to the mute / volume adjust button on the plug in.

Samsung NB30 10.1-Inch Netbook (Black) Review

Samsung NB30 10.1-Inch Netbook (Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I do tech support for a living, and often find that I need to have a computer of my own (rather than use a client's PC) when I am onsite fixing problems. My previous portable notebook was a 7-pound Sony which really had way too many bells and whistles for what I usually needed -- that is, just a basic PC, as light and as rugged as possible. When I saw the Samsung NB30, I knew I'd found what I was looking for.
The NB30 is a sweet little machine -- it is fairly speedy, it has great battery life, it's light (even with the AC adapter in my backpack, the entire package is less than 4 pounds), and it's got a "corduroy" outer case which is fingerprint- and scratch-resistant. The Windows 7 Starter operating system was easily upgraded to Windows 7 Ultimate (since I do tech support, I need full access to the entire operating system) using Windows Anytime Upgrade, and upgrading the RAM from 1 GB to 2 GB (highly recommended) took only a couple of minutes.
If you're looking for a netbook, I highly recommend the NB30.

Tivoli Audio PAL (Portable Audio Laboratory) AM/FM Radio, Black Review

Tivoli Audio PAL (Portable Audio Laboratory) AM/FM Radio, Black
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
There are as many classes of radios out there as there are people who listen to them. The first thing that comes to mind if you see this radio online is "Why $150 for a three-knob radio?" Most consumers expect digital tuning, stereo sound, and lots of lights and buttons for this price point. This radio's price is justified by what's inside. Let's talk about what this unit is.
The Tivoli iPAL is a portable AM/FM radio that is powered by an internal (and customer replaceable) nickel metal hydride battery. It includes an earphone jack, an auxilliary input jack and external power jack. There is a telescoping rod antenna for FM reception and a built-in ferrite coil for AM. The controls are simple: a volume control, a band selector with OFF position and a tuning control. There is also a green LED indicator light that tells you when the radio is on and the charging/discharging state of the battery. The controls have a very high quality feel to them and are easy to operate. The knobs fit firmly and are not loose or flimsy as on many lower priced radios. The tuning knob has a 5:1 ratio reduction gear which moves the dial pointer more slowly with respect to the tuning knob. This makes fine tuning easier. The cabinet is made of very solid and rigid plastic. The whole unit has a weighty feel and a sturdiness that most radios lack at any price. One gets the impression that daily use will not wear this unit out. It has a very tidy appearance. There are no projecting parts other than the controls. The rod antenna folds down into a groove in the back of the cabinet so it is totally invisible when not in use. There are no fake aesthetic features like on many boomboxes that are designed to make it look like something more than it is. This radio is marvelously understated and does not draw attention to itself or make garish statements about the person carrying it. There is no handle as such. One carries the set by gripping the two indentations on either side of the cabinet. A carrying case is available which makes toting it around easier.
Performance is where this radio really surprises. One might expect the sound to be cheap and tinny but once switched on, this radio fills the room with a sound reminiscent of the vacuum tube table sets of the forties. The sound is warm, rich and full of tonal range. Music comes through with round base tones and sparkling highs. Spoken word broadcasts are clear without being harsh. Voices are deep without being boomy. This sound quality is equally present through headphones so there is no tuned port trickery going on. The circuitry really does sound this good.
RF performance is good too. The field effect transistors in the tuning circuit coupled with a precise AFC (automatic frequency control) mean that Fm stations lock in easly and do not drift. AM reception is excellent even in low signal areas. The tuner is sensitive and selectivity is very good. The built-in speaker is high fidelity mono however, when you insert a headset, the FM reception is in stereo. Stereo separation is very wide and static free. Some reviewers hav commented about the lack of volume on the PAL. I find this not to be the case. I can get sufficient volume for talk radio listening by setting the volume control at one-quarter turn. This radio has as much volume as any portable radio with a speaker this size (2-1/2"). It is not a boombox or a home stereo. One's expectations must be reasonable.
The model I am reviewing is called the iPAL because it has a color scheme to complement the iPod MP3 player. The only difference between the iPAL and the PAL radios is the iPAL includes a stereo patch cable for connecting your iPod, CD player or similar device and the cabinet bears no rubberised coating. The PAL radios are offered in eight different colors, have a rubberised coating on the cabinet body and do not include the stereo patch cable although all units have the auxilliary input jack.
Final thoughts: This is an elegant, uniquely styled, high performance portable radio. It is intended for those who love radio as a technology as well as a medium. In leu of bells and whistles it features superior performance through the engineering of Henry Kloss and a build quality that is seldom found in any portable audio product. The Tivoli iPAL is not intended for the masses who judge value on price alone but for the discriminating lover of radio who admires the perfect blend of form and function.

Now you can enjoy Tivoli Audio's Model One's trademark sound quality and reception outdoors with the PAL Portable Audio Laboratory AM/FM Radio. Its 2.5" magnetically shielded driver and rubberized cabinet are weather resistant, so your PAL can keep you company by the pool or the patio. Its environmentally-friendly rechargeable Nickel Metal Hydride battery pack has no memory and fully charges in about 3 hours, providing up to 16 hours of cordless playback. The clever little green LED serves as both a power and battery status indicator. Features include a geared-down 5:1ratio analog tuning dial for accurate tuning and an auxiliary input to connect an iPod, MP3 player, or portable CD player for exceptional portable playback. It also plays MP3 files wirelessly when transmitted from your MP3 player via the Griffin iTrip or Belkin FM transmitter. It includes a stereo headphone output for private listening (headphones not included), or can be used as a recording output, or to use the PAL as a high-quality outboard tuner with your home audio system. The Henry Kloss designed tuner features Automatic Frequency Control (AFC) which locks on to the center of the station for best reception and lowest distortion, while the adjustable telescoping FM antenna extends and rotates for improved FM reception (there is also a built-in AM antenna). PAL includes rubber gasket covered i/o ports to keep sand and water out of the unit and plated hardware to withstand the elements. It includes an AC adapter for home use and for the built in battery recharging system. An optional carry bag is also available to take your PAL on the go.

Epson Expression 10000XL- Graphic Arts Scanner Review

Epson Expression 10000XL- Graphic Arts Scanner
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I purchased this recently because I wanted to upgrade from my old scanner, the Microtek 9800XL large format scanner.
I create highly detailed scratchboard line art and wanted a scanner that could capture the best possible scans of my work, which I can color digitally and send out to clients in electronic form. (I wasn't confident that my old scanner was doing the job as well as I hoped for.) Both the new and the old scanner are large format but the Epson 10000Xl is more than twice the cost of the Microtek 9800XL. Do I think the upgrade is worth it? Without a doubt.
Here is a list of cons associated with the Microtek that made me take the risk to upgrading:
1. Quirky driver. Sometimes the software could not find the installed driver and I had to restart the computer several times before it would work.
2. Microtek support is practically useless.
3. Very noisy operation
4. Scans required a lot of post production to arrive at the best capture of detail between dark and light tones. I had to scan in grayscale @ 1200dpi, make adjustment with Photoshop before converting to bitmap. With this scanner, the B&W bitmap scanning option was not capturing all the details.
The Epson, in comparison, has been a joy to own. Not only are the results much better, but the unit scans straight to B&W bitmap flawlessly, saving me time in post processing. I do need to clean the scan from unwanted specs but that is still a 50% reduction of time spent getting it optimized. The unit is also much quieter, has a slightly larger scan area, and built with superior design and parts. The lid stays open when raised at an angle whereas the Microtek was a slave to gravity.
After owning it about a month, there have been no problems to report. Since my livelihood relies on the quality of the images I produce, its a good investment and well worth the cost.

The Epson Expression 10000XL graphic arts edition is a large-format flatbed scanner designed for graphic artists and other high-end users. With its high 2,400 dpi scanning resolution, 48-bit internal color depth, and 3.8 optical density, images are crisp and accurate. The six-line alternated color CCD and auto focus optics system help to ensure that you get the best scans possible. Scan speeds are as high as 2.7 ms/line (at 1,200 dpi), while an optional automatic document feeder allows you to scan multiple sheets at a time. You can zoom in 1% increments anywhere from 50% to 200%.
The software bundle includes a variety of applications to help you easily achieve the best scan results possible. Titles include EPSON Scan 2.2, MonacoEZcolor with reflective IT8 Target, Photoshop Elements 2, and ABBYY FineReader Sprint OCR. The 10000XL connects to your computer via its standard USB and Firewire ports, and an optional network adapter lets you use the scanner as a network device. Brother DCP-8085dn Digital Copier and Laser Printer w/Full Duplex Capability and Networking
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Contrary to one of the erroneous reviews, the Brother 8085DN DOES support duplex scanning and copying. That is why you pay $50-75 more than the 8080DN, which only does duplex printing.
We have the 8080DN and this series of Brother printers is FANTASTIC -- an amazingly powerful business printer for the price of a personal printer. These things are well built, meant for a busy workgroup/small business setting. My wife runs a small nonprofit and has to print board packets and this thing just cranks them out. It will happily print two-sided packets and collate them -- it will go hours of printing without a hiccup. Duplex printing is much slower than one sided printing -- DUH, that is true of ANY printer. You're not going to get high duplex speed until you get into the corporate printers.
We have also owned the Canon ImageClass duplexing printer. The Canons are terrific, very trouble free personal printer. But there is a HUGE catch -- their $65 toner cartridge will only go about 1,000 pages.
The biggest selling point for this printer -- the Brother 8000 series can use a high yield cartridge (about $85, or less if you feel comfortable using a remanufacture) that is rated at a whopping 8000 pages!!!
We do a lot of printing, so I researched extensively, and Brother is in a class by itself for cartridge capacity and low print costs for this class of printer. I highly recommend anything in the 8000 series.
The only reason you might not want this printer for a home office is that it is BIG. But you can't get performance like this in anything smaller that I know of.
Other good things:
1) Energy Star compliant. In sleep mode this printer only draws 18 watts to keep the drum warm. You'd be surprised how many printers eat 40 or 50 watts in standby mode, which will cost you $30 or $40 over a year's time. Energy Star means first page speed is not quite as good as the little HPs, but it's still only like 12 seconds.
2) This printer has TRUE networking capability -- no need for print server. That means the only connection you need is ethernet from your router to the printer. Install drivers, and every computer on the network can control this printer completely -- that means scanning as well. I can't tell you how much better that is than having a USB printer that has to be shared. Brother seems to have high quality drivers -- we've connected XP, Vista and Win 7 without a hitch.
To sum up, everything about this printer speaks of quality and durability. It is just incredible what you can get for $300-$350 these days.

HP Pavilion P6320F Desktop PC (Black) Review

HP Pavilion P6320F Desktop PC (Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This computer, loaded with 8 Gigs of ram and AMD Phenom, is nice and fast.
My own computer use does not include any heavy duty gaming, so I can't provide any insight on performance from that perspective. However, my job is in computer graphics, and from that perspective, I can say this is a heck of a nice computer. Photoshop really zips on this thing, and my initial experiments with Premiere, Flash Pro, VirtualDubMod, and Pinnacle all look very good in terms of speed. I don't have any major complaints so far with the hardware.
The downside to any HP computer is that this manufacturer is the worst purveyor of absolute junk software, not to mention loads of demo garbageware from various payola agreements they've signed. If you buy this or any other HP computer, and if you really care about its software environment, hop online and look for any guides you can find that describe how to remove and disable HP junk and garbageware. Plan on spending a full day cleaning the computer out. Then replace everything, especially the worthless HP software, with highly regarded opensource programs downloadable from CNET and other reputable sites.
As for Windows 7, while the new operating system is not without a ton of annoyances, it is a reasonable improvement over Vista. First thing I did is kill the notorious User Account Control (UAC), although you need to know what you're doing if you take drastic measures like that. UAC is the amusing little system that confirms you really want to do whatever you just did, forcing you to click "OK" over and over as you try to actually use the computer. What a joy! I spent another full day changing Windows settings, trying to figure out where Microsoft hid certain features, and dumping much of the helpful (intrusive) trash that comes preconfigured with this operating system. It would be nice if Windows would just stay the heck out of the way.
So my four stars go to RAM and AMD, none to HP or Microsoft.

PNY 128 GB Optima SSD SATA II 2.5-Inch Solid State Drive (SSD) P-SSD2S128GM-CT01RB Review

PNY 128 GB Optima SSD SATA II 2.5-Inch Solid State Drive (SSD) P-SSD2S128GM-CT01RB
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I decided to get the PNY SSD for my desktop tower and was pleasantly surprised with it's performance. At $225 the PNY was cheaper than other 128GB drives. Back around the 7th of July, 2010 there weren't any reviews or people even talking about it which made it hard to know what to expect. However, because the specs looked really good, I figured why not give it a try. The first thing I did when I got my drive was to copy my Windows 7 HD partition to it using acronis. There are of course many other ways to do this, or a clean install is also good. Right off the bat I noticed that Windows 7 seemed to load in less than 1/2 the time! Originally my i7 based pc would boot from a western digital HD in about 22 seconds. But now it was like 10 to 11!! The very next thing I did was to run Crystal Disk Mark 2.2 and got a sequential read speed of 244 MB/sec! and write speed of 156 MB/sec which is way better than my HD. The 512K result got 186 for read and 147 for write. The 4K was 20.04 read and 23.46 write. It gets everything PNY was advertising. Also when I got the drive, the box has upgraded numbers that put the write speed at 150 and not 130 like Amazon describes. Sometimes it got up to 248MB/sec read and 167MB/sec write as numbers can change on subsequent tests. But all benches were in that rough range of figures. It's write speed is also quite a bit faster than Intel X-25 series drive as they only seem to get about 80 MB/sec on sequential writes.
Next I loaded some favorite applications and they came up much faster. Games, browsers, video editors, studio applications etc all loaded notably faster. What I'm finding out is that the PNY is actually one of the faster SSD's on the market in it's price range, or perhaps even $75-$100 more. Of course there are faster drives out there, but I've found that many that are around double the price aren't usually that much faster. Of course there are a few ultra high end drives that are even better, but I didn't set out to buy the most expensive drive. Given that the write performance is faster than a lot of comparably priced drives out there, and maybe almost twice as fast as the Intel X25M I kind of disagree with another review here that says this is the "5400 rpm drive" of SSD's. It kind of gives the impression the PNY is like the slow, economy, version of SSD's which isn't true. I agree it's not top end, but this PNY is no slouch. In fact it may just be the best bang for the buck, in the SSD market right now.
Because I "image" my HD backups I was also able to test XP. From the point it first says loading windows, I got to he desktop in 9 seconds most times, but a couple of times it was like 10 which is roughly what win 7 got. That of course could vary with the installation and depends on what kind of hardware a person has. But I'd think any one could get a boost over HD performance with this, give or take.. I also didn't have to fool around with AHCI or any other settings. I just connected it and it acted like like a regular HD. Of course that could be different on other BIOS's and motherboards, but it did work out easily for me. Plus the drive also includes TRIM. Another nice touch is they managed to fit a mini USB connector on the back of this very thin drive. Normally I'd use the SSD for a system drive, but I hooked up a USB cable and found it acts just like a giant USB flash drive. I could then walk up to any pc with USB ports and copy files with no problems. The strange thing is that PNY doesn't seem to do a very good job of advertising their drive at all. You would never know it's a good drive by visiting their site for example which is unfortunate. And few people are talking about it. That said, I give this 5 stars for being a good price per GB and faster than I expected.

ZVOX 325 High-Performance Single-Cabinet Surround Sound System Review

ZVOX 325 High-Performance Single-Cabinet Surround Sound System
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is by far the best sounding, easiest to set up all in one theater system I have owned or heard, bar none. I have owned many 5.1 systems, and also two different soundbar systems (the highly rated Sony HT CT-100 being one of them), and the zvox 325 is the best bang for the buck.
Crystal Clear vocals, smooth bass, and the phase cue option is great for action movies (Wanted and Matrix Blu-ray sounded amazing, although music sounds much better with the phase cue turned almost all the way off.)
While the CT-100 worked great in my bedroom, vocals were still a problem, and the bass was way too punchy even at lower levels. Since I had just ditched and sold all my 5.1 equipment (yamaha 1000 watt receiver, boston acoustics bookshelves, and some older bose fronts) the last thing I wanted to do was run wires all over my condo, as well as have my fiance complain about space issues and how confusing it was for her to just watch tv through the internal speakers. I also did not want to drop thousands of dollars on other sound bar systems just because they had digital audio and hdmi switching capabilities.
My hdtv has 4 hdmi inputs, which is more than enough for me. I have my blu ray, wii, and hd cable all run through hdmi into the tv (except for wii, component), and the analog audio out to the zvox 325. I still do not buy the digital audio is always better bs, as this sounds 10x clearer than my ct-100, and can go twice as loud through a stereo mini jack! No, it is not true 5.1, but during movies I can hear background effects side to side, and most importantly, I can actually HEAR the dialogue. If there is one con, its the flimsy remote, but I can deal with it. I think zvox now has a customer for life, and for $299, I dare you to do better.

The ZVOX 325 is the perfect choice for someone who wants to add terrific sound to a television – without the complication and expense of a 5.1 surround sound system. It delivers remarkably accurate, wide-range sound from a single compact cabinet; with only one connecting wire\'.and a one-page owner\'s manual. The 325 was created by legendary speaker designer Winslow Burhoe (founder of EPI Loudspeakers and Burhoe Acoustics). Frankly, we are amazed at how good the 325 sounds. It is simply delightful. Female vocalists sound warm, rich and natural. Music is reproduced with true high fidelity. Live concerts sound big and airy and awesome. Movie soundtracks are delivered with startling realism - including punchy, accurate bass. Even sporting events take on a new dimension with the 325 – you\'ll hear details you\'ve never heard before. And all sound is reproduced with a sense of distortion-free ease. Never before has an audio system offered this combination of high performance, small size, simplicity and affordability. Just hook up its single connecting wire and you will transform your TV into a terrific home theater system...but without all the wires and boxes. "The 325 sounded great. An awesome system." - Sound & Vision magazine "Inspires sincere gadget lust...surprisingly good surround sound." - PC World "Superior to most we've tested." - CNET "Remarkable. NOOKcolor eBook Tablet Review

NOOKcolor eBook Tablet
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've read e-books on just about every device out there, while looking for the perfect mix of features to support them. I've gone from an ancient Palm III to all the Kindles and other readers that are out there. First, I must say my favorite way to read a book is via the treeware version - you just can't replace books. What you can do though is supplement them with a device that adds something to the experience that makes a device worth buying. For me, my new perfect device is the NookColor.
I will cut to the chase and answer the question people are most curious about. How does it stack up verus e-ink? Well, as a user of many e-ink devices, I know all about how such devices as Kindle eliminate eye-strain. This was my first worry with the NookColor. As it turns out, their is a color/font adjuster that you can change how the books looks until you find something that is pleasing and non-straining to your particular eyes. While I won't be able to read for five hours straight like on a Kindle, I think four hours straight is a fair trade!
One thing I needed with my reader was the ability to access the Internet at times. This is an area where the NookColor beats out all the e-ink readers with smooth and responsive access to the Net. I found the touch keyboard easy to use, and the rotating display helpful.
The apps are limited to ones that actually work, so there isn't a broad selection like on other devices. It's just quality ones. I suppose with their NookDeveloper program, their should be more apps available soon. Granted they will be a lot of junk apps, as on other devices, but at least there will be variety.
The online "nookstore" is a little more inviting than Amazon's in that it feels like you are a browsing through a variety of options, and not just a list.
I liked the in-store features too. It was nice to check out any book for free while there. Plus, you can download additional free books, only while in a Barnes & Noble.
I like how you can highlight and put notes on your text very easily. While there are several colors available to highlight, I just found out you can highlight a highlight. The mark gets darker and darker as with a real pen, so you can extra emphasize a passage if needed. And if you can't wait to share a passage, you can zap it straight to your facebook and twitter to share with your friends, while you keeping on reading. It's cooler than it sounds!
I will probably upadte this review in a few days, as I discover more features. So, far this seems to be the best collection of features I have found on an ereader, for me personally. I understand the things people like in their prefered reader, but for me, this is the best!

SanDisk G3 120 GB Solid State Drive SDS7CB-120G-G25 Review

SanDisk G3 120 GB Solid State Drive SDS7CB-120G-G25
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I received my SanDisk G3 120 GB Solid State Drive SDS7CB-120G-G25 12 days ago, so my comments will be limited to my impressions and experience during this time.
Getting the unit up and running was a snap. I just plugged in the power connector, the SATA connector, and then powered up. The BIOS automatically recognized the SanDisk SSD.
Everything went like clockwork during the installation of Windows XP Pro (32 bits). Now my intent is to purchase and load Windows 7 (64 bits) on the SSD in order to get the full benefits of TRIM; which according to Microsoft, is a feature "which will cut down on the amount of data to be deleted, increasing the SSD's lifespan and allowing it to delete garbage data in advance. It also uses ATA commands to increase the SSD write speeds".
I chose this SanDisk SSD over the very popular Intel SSD for the reasons below:
1. 10-year guarantee. SanDisk must have a lot of confidence in this SSD to guarantee it for 3 times as long as the Kingston SSDs and twice as long as the Intel SSDs.
2. * published write speed of the SanDisk SSD is greater than the published write speed of the Intel SSDs.
3. SanDisk reputation for quality products (I've used SanDisk products for over 10 years and am happy with them).
When comparing the cost of the SanDisk SSD against an HDD, one should take into account the lifetime of this SSD, not just the initial cost. Getting twice the lifetime out of this SSD effectively cuts the cost in half. Still, at this time the HDD wins hands down in price when size is taken into account.
I am sold on SSDs in general because:
The failure mode of these devices is in the writing, so when failure occurs, it is relatively easy to retrieve the data without loss.
There is no need to defrag because fragmentation does not occur.
If you intend to purchase the SanDisk SSD for use with a PC, be sure to order a mounting kit such as SILVERSTONE SDP08 3.5 to 2 X 2.5-Inch Bay Converter sold by Amazon. This unit costs $7.99 and will hold 2 of the SanDisk SSDs and fit in a space that a Floppy Disk Unit would usually occupy. SILVERSTONE SDP08 3.5 to 2 X 2.5-Inch Bay Converter
I have read articles recommending that the virtual memory of Windows be removed when using an SSD, other articles recommended reducing it in size. I chose to take it out. In XP Pro (32 bits), this is accomplished getting into Control Panel and following this path:
Control Panel-->Administrative Tools-->Computer Management-->Right Click on Computer Management(Local)-->Properties-->Advanced-->Performance Settings-->Change-->No paging file
Do the OKs necessary to Save
Restart if told to do so.
I am giving this SanDisk SSD a rating of 5 because of the ease of installation, and performance which appears to be better than that of the hard disk it replaced. * Intel Information
"sustained sequential write speeds of up to 70 MBps"
* Sandisk Information
"fast write speeds: -- 120 MB/sec." (Paraphrased for brevity)

The unit is solidly built(steel enclosure), and works flawlessly like all my other Netgear switches. It's perfect for applications that need PoE to power Wireless access points, or for my purpose of powering and connecting a bunch of IP security cameras. A nice surprise was the price for this unit as it's much less than other PoE switches I looked into. In addition, having the two Gigabit connections were perfect for connecting it into my Gigabit backbone, and continuing the chain. I've yet to enable and configure CoS or other advanced features, but the UI seems straightforward. I'm not an IP expert, so this switch was a nice option rather than going to a managed switch. My only complaint with the unit is the fan is louder than I expected, noticeable loud in a room with a couple computers also running. All my other switches have been fanless, so I'm spoiled. In the end, I'd purchase another one. In fact I probably will real soon.

This camera was great-once I final got it working.
The camera is powered by a POE hub or a separate additional a/c adapter neither of which are included with the camera. Would have been nice to know this BEFORE purchase. For a $800 item you would think that Panasonic would include a way to TURN IT ON, but NO. The ac adapter is item BB-HCA3A (about $40)- or at least warn buyers to get the a/c adapter.
This was very inconvient because after 4 hours of research to figure this out, I had to order the a/c adapter and pay for overnight shipping.
