I'm not a tech-guy by any stretch, just wanted a solid everyday home laptop with good memory for internet, Itunes, Skype and some word processing (no gaming) and this laptop absolutely fit the bill! Solid construction, unique and appealing design (case texture is great, shows no fingerprints), comfortable, wide and spacious keyboard, lightning fast-start up and downloads, user-friendly, great for watching videos and DVD's, fast CD and DVD burner and an awesome camera for Skyping with friends and family. For the price and complete with Windows 7, you can't beat it! Battery life is fine too. I've had friends that have owned Vaio's years with little to no problems, and now glad to own one myself. If you're looking for a rock solid laptop with style and function, get this one. I'm happy I made this purchase, would not hesitate to recommend it to anyone!

I've had this computer for a few days now and I really like it. The display is very bright (actually had to turn it down at night) and clear. Processing speed is great and the 1gb of dedicated (yes I said dedicated) graphics memory is more than I could ask for from an off the shelf computer. ProtectSmart feature for the hard drive is a nice addition (senses if laptop is being dropped and locks the hard drive).
I just wish that it had a Blu-ray player and integrated Bluetooth that I saw on some lower priced models. See the review at [...]
So far this computer has done everything I have asked of it. One thing of note is to make sure your programs you are going to install are 64bit compatible. I downloaded some demo software and found out it wouldn't work.
Also this model is eligible for a free upgrade to Windows 7 if purchased between June 26, 2009 to January 31, 2010.

Sony VAIO VGN-NW275F/B 15.5-Inch Widescreen (Black) Review

Sony VAIO VGN-NW275F/B 15.5-Inch Widescreen (Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
i bought this laptop at fry's during a 1 day sale for 699.99 and is normally an [...] laptop. the specs are solid across the board with windows seven pre-installed and works perfectly for a laptop, the spacing of the keys are very nicely placed so that you won't trip over typing each letter as well as virtually a finger print free plastic casing it comes in unlike an hp where it's a high gloss, metallic finish and will get tons of fingerprints. the speed is 2.20 ghz and an intel core 2 duo processor so you are getting very decent to above average speed (3/5 stars) for the money depending what you are using it for. it comes with a blu-ray play which i personally i wasn't too concerned about but unless again, you are using this more so for something other then a dependable and fast laptop and already have a ton of blu-rays. the 320 gb hd is more then enough memory for school projects and papers so you won't have a problem if you are using it for non computer graphical oriented classes for the software it needs if graphics design is your major. and lastly the video card is worth the investment, the ati 4700 mobility card is a 2009 issue and with it's dedicated 512 mb memory you won't have to worry about playing 95 percent of most games in the last year or games upcoming. sony offers a service like a lo-jack for laptops where for 15 dollars you will get a lifetime service for tracking your stolen or lost laptop so you can't go wrong with that just peel the tracking sticker off and put it on the bottom of your laptop and use the same number to go to [...] and you will have lifetime service.
the only gripes i really have which i'm knit picking is that it comes with a blu-ray but not a true 1080p it is 1366 x 768 so if you must have a laptop that plays blu-rays but not an absolute 1080p then this laptop won't have it but on a 15.5 inch screen it won't matter that much this feature is the last thing you should be concerned about as an educated consumer. the battery life says 4 hours but i have my brightness on high so i get about 2.45 to 3 hours, i upgraded to a 4400 mah, 11.1 volt battery so i will have about 6.
as a multi-functional school/multimedia/gaming laptop this gets a 10/10 if you pay less then retail, and an 8.5/10 if you pay full retail price only because if you do your research and find a spec on another laptop to your liking for the price like an led backlight display instead of the tft screen this comes with it would only be more of a minute detail, then you might go for that instead but either way you can't go wrong with any of the specs here. when you invest hard earned cash on something you want the best bang for your buck and invest not to upgrade so get a very worth while laptop because like all electronic devices most of the upgrades depending the quality you get won't matter they are more selling points.

I picked this up on a whim. Other reviews were favorable so I figured it couldn't be too terrible. Now I've only had it for one night but here are my impressions thus far. It feels better constructed than I expected. The sound quality is far better than I thought it would be. The remote doesn't look too "cheap" either. Where I'm really impressed though is with the picture quality. Colors are extremely vivid and sharp. I'm used to watching on a few year old 32" Bravia and to be honest I think this AOC actually looks better. If this TV holds up then it's one heck of a steal. Quite satisfied with the purchase so far.
Update 2/17/10:
TV still works flawlessly. If I must complain about one thing though, it's that switching between inputs is a little slow. Other than that I'm still just as happy as when I bought it.

Love the rugged unit. Very easy to use. Love the loop mode so I don't have to record all day, just tag the good stuff.
The wireless remote is the only detractor. You have to have it close to the unit so if you have the main unit in your backpack you have to get your wrist close to it in order to tag a loop.
Very long battery life with rechargeable batteries. I would also recommend the extra mounting kit as it has many more mounts that will give you more flexibility.

Antec Signature Series 850W PSU ( SG-850 ) Review

Antec Signature Series 850W PSU ( SG-850 )
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I think Antec hired the same company that does packaging for Apple to package this power supply. If what's inside the box was garbage, the packaging wouldn't matter - but this is one solid huge well built power supply.
The box - there's a black cardboard/paper sleeve. You slide that off to reveal a black box top and bottom with a yellow box in between. Take off the top and you are greeted with a black cardboard insert with a real live signed by a human being performance print out. Under that is the power supply in a double looped cardboard and foam box. Lift that box out and there's another cardboard card that covers the modular connectors. All neat, tidy, packaged with just the right amount of materials to keep this whole unit well protected.
The supply itself. This thing is so pretty, I almost want to have it on display. The black paint is beautiful. Actually I'd guess this supply would work great with the Antec Spider "enclosure". You can also feel the quality in the weight, this is a heavy PSU.
Cabling - the fundamental important cables are hard wired to the PSU. Wrapping is done with black nylon mesh where the loose ends are capped with a big plastic ring that should never come off (no wire ties, no sad crimping). Antec was smart about cable separation, so you should be able to route the wires cleanly inside your case. The built in wires are standard motherboard wires (24 pin, 4 and 8 pin); 2 PCI-e 8 pin; 3 Molex; and 3 SATA. Probably just the right number of connectors for most installs. There are 4 more modular sockets 2 for more PCI-e 8 pin connectors; and then more Molex / SATA connectors. The supply comes with additional modular cables: 2 x 3 Molex connectors; 2 x 3 SATA connectors; and 2 PCI-e connectors.
So this PSU could provide power for a ton of fans, a big old load of IDE / SATA hard drives (9 of each), and 4 video cards (or 2 that require dual PCI-e connectors). If you've read this far, you are interested in this PSU. Please do yourself a favor, and don't just take my word for the quality of this PSU; type exactly this in google and read the first link: jonnyguru antec signature 850. You will be very very happy you did that, and you will be very happy you purchased this PSU.
It fit perfectly in my Antec P182 case. And it is very quiet when running. There are fancier, flashier PSU's. Antec took the silent strong approach to this PSU.

I have had this set for a couple weeks now and I am thrilled with everything about it. It has special, "invisible" speakers that use the bezel as a sound distributor. It produces sound as crisp and clear as any other set I've owned, but it lacks the low end range that my surround sound has. No big surprise given the lack of a sub woofer. The led technology does produce incredibly deep blacks, just as advertised. HD broadcast, DVD, and blue-Ray all look fantastic. Sports broadcast in HD are gorgeous, and i haven't noticed any clarity problems with rapid moving images as can be true on some LCD sets. Standard broadcast stations are fuzzy, more so than my 50" Samsung plasma. I really like the auto-select feature on the screen settings as it makes switching between sports and broadcast movies easy since you don't have to switch the aspect ratio manually like on my Samsung. Finally, I am enjoying the streaming netflix videos via the Internet connection. I opted to use a wired connection direct from my airport. No set up problems with this set at all. I didn't buy it from Amazon, got it at a local retailer at a better price listed here. Oh, and near as I can tell, the image on this page looks exactly like my set, contrary to what the other reviewer claimed. Maybe they changed the image? Overall, a great set with which I am very happy!

Lexmark X364DN Multifuntion Printer (13B0502)
Average Reviews:

This printer churns out pages in laser-sharp quality, scans quickly to a usb drive, copies quickly, scans and prints double-sided and easily works with both Macs and PCs over the ethernet network (although I did not try scanning over the network, so that may or may not work. I also don't use the fax feature because we have a dedicated machine for those increasingly rare times when someone uses a fax).
We've used this in our office for about a year, and so far I don't think the paper has jammed once. It's just a reliable performer that you don't need to think about.
The only problem I've had is setting up the email client for the printer. Supposedly, you should be able to email scans, but it won't connect with our email server.

Average Reviews:

I needed a DVD/TV combo for a bedroom, and could only find the iSymphony and Toshiba. The Toshiba reviews were wicked bad regarding sound quality, glare, and contrast. I watched the video for this TV and was impressed, and I looked up the company, which yes, I agree w/ the person who gave it one star, seems like a corporate snarl, but they do manufacture 3-4 brands of televisions, and recently did or are going to, purchase Pioneer. That said, I ordered the product which arrived in perfect condition in its original iSymphony carton, well secured inside with styrofoam. No problem what so ever with it, just remove from box, plug in wall, attach existing cable cord, turn on w/ remote control.
The remote comes taped in the side of one of the styrofoam cushions, so don't toss them til you locate it. Three instruction manuals are enclosed, in English, French, and Spanish. The instructions were minimal at best, not indicating at all how to "start channel scan" which is the first thing that appears on the screen when you power up. Channel scan. Staring at remote. No clue. After some geeking w/ the remote, I stumbled on this protocal: hit the teeny MENU button on the left face of the remote near the top. Arrow down to CABLE, arrow right to SCAN, and it proceeds to load your available channels. It holds from 1-135 only. The DVD is initiated by punching the teeny SOURCE button directly right of the MENU button, and arrow down to DVD. Pop that puppy in and all good. There is no eject on the remote for the DVD, probably because as it is a side-load, this prevents the disc from ejecting onto the floor. You have to WALK to the set to eject a disc :) To resume TV, go back to SOURCE and arrow to TV and you're good.
The sound is incredibly vibrant and clear, the picture is the best I have seen on any sized LCD TV, no glare no problems, it is a true find at this price. I could kick them for not including instructions for the remote, or detailed instructions for set-up, both of which would have knocked an hour off my installation time. Can't say enough good about this combo, it's truly as good as they get and the price is remarkably low. That it is sold by Amazon, and carries their TV quarantee, and ships free, is a deal maker.
*Last thing, the base arrives already attached to the set by 4 deeply recessed phillips head screws, so if you want to hang the set, just power the screws out.* SEE UPDATE
Very impressive unit. Very satisfied. Wish I had gotten a large one and might do so for another room.
*[UPDATE day 2 of ownership] First day of use the MUTE button on the remote ceased to work, except about 1of 15 tries, but the volume control is fast and an OK substitute. I found a Q&A TV site that said a ONE-FOR-All Universal could replace the remote that came w/ this set. May consider that as they are

My law office needed a medium to heavy-duty printer to use in the preparation of large numbers of trial exhibits. Typically this will involve producing seven binders of perhaps 200-300 images each. Our old, light-duty printer simply was not up to the job. The problem was mainly one of expense -- a light-duty printer will require many ink refills in the process of producing these trial exhibits, costing over $1,000. This, of course, was not acceptable.
After performing tests, we determined that this Kyocera C270N could do the same job for a little over $350. Plus it produced far better and clearer images with better image rendition than other printers that we had been using. Also, the unit is reasonably fast.
Thus far, this printer has been an economical and efficient workhorse, that I would recommend to others who have medium-duty tasks similar to the one I describe above.

I purchased this TV for an elderly family member who's 2 year old 42" Dynex took a dump.
The Samsung is much more aesthetically pleasing and the picture quality is definitely more crisp and clear than her old Dynex.
The TV is extremely easy to set up...all you need is a #2 philips screwdriver and maybe an additional person to lift the TV and place it on the base.
For 2011, Samsung redesigned the remote control and the buttons are much easier to use (compared to the 2010 models). The remote is extremely long and odd shaped, but it fits comfortably in my hand.
Menu options are plentiful which makes the customization process a breeze. Samsung's definitely have the most options from what I have seen.
All in all, this is a nice TV and should be more than sufficient for what it is being used for.

I ordered this laptop on the HP website, even though the model number is not the same (mines is DV4-1300), it has all the same exact features as this model, and looks physically the same. So far so good I haven't had any problems. It's packed with features, and the best part is, that it's affordable. I got my laptop for $701.00, of course this was with the use of a coupon, and a student discount, plus the shipping was free, not only that, but I got free upgrades on the memory and hard drive. I think this is the perfect laptop for a student, because it's not that heavy and you can easily take it with you where ever you want. I also love the 14" screen it's not too big, but it's not too small, to me it's the perfect screen size on a laptop. The fan is a little noisy at times, but it's not a major concern. It also gets quite hot on the bottom, but I think most laptops do. The battery life I found to be so-so, not the best, but not bad either.

Bursts of energy and excitement are brought to life with the HP Expresso Black Imprint, using bright flickering balls that erupt outwared against a sleek black backdrop. The streamlined look is enhanced with a color-matched keyboard and touchpad. And touch media controls light up and become visible only when the system is powered on further enhancing the clean appearance.

The Basics

Processor: The Intel Core 2 Duo T6400 processor has a 2.0 GHz processor speed, fast 800 MHz front-side bus (FSB), and 2 MB L2 cache. (An L2, or secondary, cache temporarily stores data; and a larger L2 cache can help speed up your system's performance. The FSB carries data between the CPU and RAM, and a faster front-side bus will deliver better overall performance.)
With two computational execution cores in a single processor, it provides greater system response when running multi-threaded applications simultaneously with no significant increase in power consumption. It's optimized for multitasking and is ready to support the Microsoft Windows Vista operating system. It can simultaneously run multiple demanding applications--such as graphics-intensive games or serious number-crunching business productivity applications--while downloading music or running virus-scanning security programs in the background. Some of the advanced Intel innovations of the Core 2 Duo processor include:

Smart Memory Access: Improves system performance by hiding memory latency, thus optimizing the use of available computer data bandwidth to provide data to the processor when and where it is needed.
Advanced Digital Media Boost: Effectively doubles the execution speed for instructions used widely in multimedia and graphics applications.
Dynamic Power Coordination: Coordinates Enhanced Intel SpeedStep Technology and idle power-management state (C-states) transitions independently per core to help save power.
Deeper Sleep with Dynamic Cache Sizing: Saves power by flushing cache data to system memory during periods of inactivity to lower CPU voltage.

Hard Drive: The large 320 GB Serial ATA (SATA) hard drive (5400 RPM) offers a wealth of storage space, perfect for storing a vast multimedia collection or for editing digital video. This SATA hard drive also quickens the pace with a higher speed transfer of data--akin to Firewire and USB 2.0.
You'll enjoy enhanced hard drive protection with HP's Protectsmart, which includes a 3D accelerometer that safeguards your data by parking your hard drive if your notebook detects any range of motion, such as being knocked off your desk, falling or taking abuse.

Memory: The 4 GB of installed RAM helps boost the amount of available video RAM that's shared with this notebook's video card. This notebook has an amazing 8 GB maximum RAM capacity (4 x 2 GB). To receive the faster data transfer benefits of the dual-channel DDR2 RAM, any RAM additions require memory modules of same capacity and clockspeed.

DVD/CD Drive: This multiformat DVD/CD drive is compatible with writing both DVD+ and DVD- disc formats as well as dual-layer (DL) DVD+/-R discs, which can store up to 8.5 GB of data. It features 4x DVD-R DL Write Once, 2.4x DVD+R DL Write Once, 8x DVD+R, 4x DVD+RW, 8x DVD-R, 4x DVD-RW, 16x DVD-ROM, 40x CD-R, 24x CD-RW, and 40x CD-ROM speeds.
This LightScribe DVD±RW drive lets you laser-etch silkscreen quality text and images on to CDs and DVDs . Your software, PC and discs work together for a no-hassle way to burn just the labels you want. After you burn content, just flip the disc over, reinsert and burn your label--anything from a simple title to a full-disc work of art.

Keyboard & Mouse: This notebook has a 101-key keyboard and a touchpad with on/off button and dedicated vertical/horizontal Scroll Up/Down pad. It also includes two quick-launch buttons (HP QuickPlay Music and DVD).
Screen, Video & Audio You'll enjoy razor-sharp graphics and widescreen movies with the 14.1-inch WXGA high-definition screen, which has a widescreen resolution of 1280 x 800 pixels--perfect for watching DVD movies the way they were meant to be seen. Video is powered by the Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 4500MHD, which uses shared video memory (up to 1759 MB allocated from the system memory). This graphics card is built with Intel Clear Video technology, which delivers clearer, more detailed images by eliminating many of the jagged edges and video artifacts seen when viewing interlaced content and features powerful color control to ensure videos are not too dark, overly bright, or washed out.
The Altec Lansing speakers provide exceptional sound, and it also includes SRS Premium Sound. You'll be able to privately share enjoyment of multimedia with a friend via the dual headphone jacks.

Networking, Connectivity & Expansion This notebook has an integrated 54g wireless LAN that's fully compatible with 802.11b/g wireless networks. It also includes a next-generation ExpressCard 34 card slot (replacing the PCMCIA slot), which lets you take advantage of thinner, faster, and lighter expansion cards for even more advanced wireless, networking, storage, and security features. It comes with the following external connectors:

3 USB 2.0 ports for connecting a wide range of peripherals--from digital cameras to MP3 players (with 1 eSATA + USB 2.0 combo port)
1 HDMI output (for connecting to a compatible HDTV or home theater receiver for uncompressed digital audio and video via a single cable)
Analog video output: 1 VGA
1 ExpressCard/54 slot (also supports ExpressCard/34)

(More customer reviews)
Not much to say here for introduction, I guess - if you are reading this review chances are you know why we professionals buy ThinkPads... ;) :P
Pros:
- world-famous, excellent quality FULL-SIZED KEYBOARD (=essentially Lenovo built an ultra-portable road-warrior around a regular-sized keyboard sans dedicated numeric pad which is available as accessory)
- COMES WITH ULTRABASE w/ DVD-RW dockin station (model #32492FU from J&R, at least) included in the box ($200 savings!)
- Ultrabase can charge a second battery and sports loads of extra ports while does not block any on-board ones
- runs COLD, even after 5+ hours
- netbook-class dimensions and battery life but much faster than a netbook and it can pretty
- very good battery life/CPU performance ratio with mid-range battery and fast (i5-540) CPU combo: I regularly score above 5 hours on WiFi with medium-light usage (VPN Client connected, putty/SSH, Firefox + Chrome, both running 10+ tabs and loads of plugins including Flash Player etc)
- good weight at 3.xx lbs w/ 6-cell battery
- Windows 7 Professional license included
- decent-sized 320GB hard drive
- finally a 'reasonably slow' integrated (on-die) Intel HD graphics core
- full Intel vPro stack including vT-d (DirectIO) means future Citrix XenClient support (launches in October 2010)
- excellent security: fingerprint reader, Intel AMT, optional encrypting hard drive upgrade
- excellent status lights with proper 'icons', readable even with closed lid
- very convenient, very useful ThinkVantage Tools: all updates, profiles, locations, warranty, support issues etc can be accessed by the push of a button
- dedicated hardware buttons all around: radio on/off/ volume mute/down/up, ThinkVantage Tools button to access everything else
- usual unbreakable ThinkPad chassis (though feels a bit less sturdy than old IBM ThinkPads)
- mile-long list of options (accessories, warranties/support, upgrades etc)
- and of course, built-in ThinkLight, a switchable LED light source for nighttime typing, checking card numbers etc! :)
Cons:
- 2GB memory -> Windows 7 Pro 32-bit preinstalled, you need to reinstall from scratch to get 64-bit (serial works for both)
- no bloatware (no, ThinkVantage Tools are NOT bloatware)
- wimpish battery life with 4-cell -> only buy it with 6-cell!
- 9-cell gives great battery life but stands out in the back and pushes the weight well above 4lbs
- rather craptastic LCD colors out of the box -> run a calibration tool, it makes a difference though viewing angles etc won't be better (cheap screen panel tech:()
- X201/i is 'only WXGA (1280x800), not available with WXGA+ (1440X900) -> only ultra-light X201s got it but then say goodbye to webcam... dumb compromise?
- personal grievance: Fn button is outside instead of Ctrl... aaahhh, you shouldn't use anything other than ThinkPade, period. :)
Summary: for $1,200 it is the best all-around ultraportable road warrior with the most power and longest battery at the same time.
PS: make sure you check your warranty status because J&R apparently screwing around with your dates, mine came with a June 2010 warranty start date, that's a 2-months loss right there... just contact Lenovo and fax them your actual invoice, they will fix it (takes some time.)
Warning: if you want to upgrade your warranty to ThinkPad Protection (accidental damage etc) you MUST add in the first 30 days!

I bought this powerful machine about 6 weeks ago and it works absolutely flawless. I use it for work and it is running at least 16 hours per day. Battery life of the 12-cell battery is superb. Compatibility with peripherals is the best I have seen with any PC (thanks to Windows7 ??). I am running 2 additional screens with it without problems, using the Toshiba DynaDock docking station and the external VGA port on the laptop. I also use a 1TB WD USB HD with SmartWare for automatic back-ups. Also flawless. I will return to this review site, if I ever run into issues with this machine. So far, I'd say, you can buy it without hesitation.

Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8L II USM Ultra Wide Angle Zoom Lens Review

Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8L II USM Ultra Wide Angle Zoom Lens
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have owned both this and the original version. The new lens is better in the corners and flares less but the corners are still a little soft at f2.8 and you can get the lens to flare a little if you try. I haven't seen the loss of clarity above 20mm that others reported. Perhaps you would see a slight difference in eyelashes if you did a lot of portraits but this is probably not the best choice for a portrait lens. It is a somewhat better lens for shooting landscapes and other shots where edge to edge clarity is important.
But the differences between the two versions are minor and in some instances irrelevant. If you don't shoot a full frame camera the soft edges don't appear in the photo. And flare is a minimal issue at most. It rarely appears and is easy to fix in Photoshop if it does. I would opt for the original if I didn't shoot full frame based on the price difference alone.
My only problem with the original was when I had to shoot hand held. Sometimes you can't bring a tripod along which rules out shooting at f16 or 22 so I occasionally ended up with shots that were soft in some of the edges. The new lens will solve that. That is the only reason I decided to upgrade.
I haven't used many other lenses in the same range so I can't compare quality with other makers but I'm not aware of anything reputed to be better. I have Canon primes as well as other Canon zooms and in actual use all are generally close in quality. I use the primes if possible when I plan to crop or enlarge a lot but I could still get by nicely with the zooms.
So, if you shoot less than full frame or if price is an issue, get the original. If you shoot full frame but need maximum clarity in the center (portraits for example), test both versions first. If you shoot full frame and need maximum edge to edge clarity, go with the new lens.
Update: Having shot this lens for a long period I would discount the comments about problems above 20mm. I owned the first version as well and I don't see a difference in the 20mm to 35mm range. On the contrary, I am increasingly impressed with the image quality and sharpness of this lens throughout the range. I recently used it into a very narrow slot canyon where I couldn't take more than the camera and the lens attached to it and took shots from 16mm up to 35mm that all came out very sharp and rich. Granted I wasn't shooting wide open because I needed lots of depth of field but the point is the lens delivered the best shots of that trip. In terms of versatility, this lens is unmatched for wide angle use by Canon owners. I also have the 14mm f2.8 II, 17mm f4. TS/E and 15mm fisheye for comparison. This is the one wide angle lens I always take along.

ASUS DSEB-DG LGA771 Intel 5400 FB-DIMM DDR2-800 SSI EEB Motherboard Review

ASUS DSEB-DG LGA771 Intel 5400 FB-DIMM DDR2-800 SSI EEB Motherboard
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Bought this as an open box item off of Newegg in 2009, and couldn't be happier with it. Mine is the non SAS version, which was more expensive and I didn't have a use for.
First - my configuration:
ASUS DSEB-DG mainboard
(2) Intel Xeon 52XX - these were low power (35W each) engineering release chips (not for sale)
(2) Dynatron H39G CPU coolers
8 GB FBDIMM, DDRs 800 (4 sticks, so 4 free slots right now)
PNY GTX 265
(1) WD Velociraptor 300 GB
(1) Caviar Black 1 TB
(2) Pioneer DVD Burners
Creative X-Fi Sound Card
Corsair 1000W power supply
Thermaltake Armour Case
Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit
Pros:
Dual CPU
8 DIMM Slots
TONS of SATA Inputs (6 + 8: see notes below)
4 Gigabit LAN ports
Very straightforward BIOS
SLI capable dual CPU socket board!
45 nm capable
1600 MHz system bus!
Excellent Fan speed control
Cons:
Marvel RAID controller still software based
Only 4 USB - 2 on back of board, and 2 more on board header
No built in sound - at all
Some notes:
If you're going to buy this board, make sure you have a power supply that has the correct plugs. It has the main 24 pin (standard) plug, then a 4 pin. I had a power supply that I had bought to be used in a dual xeon configuration like this (SSI EEB), and it didn't end up having the right configuration of plugs.
Next, the FBDIMM memory tends to run hot. However, if you get the same dynatron coolers that I have, then they blow right over the memory keeping it reasonably cool. I would NOT recommend getting the ASUS memory cooler unless you are ready to change out the fan on it (notoriously bad)
Third - you cannot load an OS onto a hard drive connected to the red (i.e. marvell controlled) SATA plugs. Also, some have reported issues with using DVD drives on the marvell plugs. It would seem as though boot drives, and optical drives must be plugged into the non-marvell SATA ports (the black ones). Once you have an OS and get the marvel drivers/software, you can plug in some drives and start building your RAIDs. I has a RAID 1 for a while, but 'discarded' it in favor of a Synology NAS RAID1
Next - and you should expect this since you're buying an SSI EEB board - this is an EATX form factor board (13" x 12") so make sure you have a case that can fit it.
Bottom line, there are probably more modern dual CPU socket boards out there now, and that's why there are so few people buying this one, but if you have a 5400 generation Xeon CPU (or ideally 2), then give this board a shot - its been stable, powerful, and given me plenty of room to expand. The acquaintance of mine who got me the engineering release CPUs built several dual Xeon systems, and this board was the best of the ones he tried (he tried a smaller, cheaper one that didn't have good fan control, and those dynatron coolers SCREAM when run at full speed)
Happy System Building!
