Epson PowerLite 1735W Multimedia Projector (V11H270020) Review

Epson PowerLite 1735W Multimedia Projector (V11H270020)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The PowerLite 1735W is terrific portable presentation tool. I researched comparable DLP-based projectors before buying this one. The PowerLite's picture quality is excellent for such a small projector, and the "3LCD" technology works very well for playing videos (comparable DLP projectors have trouble with rapid light/dark changes).
Tired of mediocre - and loud - projectors at conference & hotel venues, I have been pleased with the very low fan noise when set to "low" brightness - and the output is still a bright ~2000 lumens.
Pros:
* Bright, even when set to "low"
* Quiet when set to "low" brightness
* Compact & light weight
* Very easy to set-up with VGA input
* Works well for projecting flash videos (or DVDs)
* Very long lamp life (4000 hours on "low" brightness)
* Can set-up for custom logo (professional look)
* Can set-up for password lock-out (inhibit theft)
* High-resolution native WXGA (1280 x 800) projection
* S-Video input
Cons:
* Pricey
* Noticeable fan noise when set to maximum brightness
* XGA (1024 x 768) projection is not native (dithered)
* Only works with PowerPoint "presenter mode" (notes on laptop screen) when using VGA. Presenter mode does *NOT* work when connected via WiFi or USB (will only project the same output as the main laptop screen).
* No component, HDMI or DisplayPort inputs (but nothing in this class does)
* Security lock-out requires the remote control. If you lose the remote, you're toast until you get a replacement.
* Speaker output is no better than typical laptop. Only suitable for a small conference table.
The DLP-based projectors are slightly smaller, but for me the combined features of the PowerLite 1735W make it a superior tool for professional use. If you don't need the WiFi or USB input (and I don't), consider the PowerLite 1730W Epson PowerLite 1730W 3000 Lumens WXGA Projector and save ~$100. If size and weight aren't important, there are lots of far less expensive alternatives.

Very happy with our Samsung CL80. The pictures are everything Samsung says and the ability to close-ups is amazing. I have shot snow crystals on leaves and many other things, pushing the camera and it comes through. I am using it to capture the items my wife and I cut in glass prior to putting them into the kiln and the CL80 does a great job. We are very happy with the camera, with Samsung and with Amazon.

Panasonic SC-BT330 5.1 Channel Cinema Surround Home Entertainment System Review

Panasonic SC-BT330 5.1 Channel Cinema Surround Home Entertainment System
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have been in the market to get streaming content on my TV for a while now. I compared this unit against the LG-LHB535. The LG has some added features.
1. Built in Wifi
2. Streaming software... which means you can stream from your computer.
3. HDMI inputs.
Otherwise the Panasonic works awesome. It's fast and responsive, easy to setup, small and sleek, and it's cheaper than the comparable LG unit.
It includes the following features.
1. Amazon video rentals... Awesome.. However it's $3 for most regular rentals and then more for HD. I'm still a bigger fan of RedBox $1 for anything... Amazon I might be holding out on your steep prices.
2. Netflix the same as everything else... other than the interface is really simple and ugly like the PS3 interface. It's not as easy to navigate and search like the X Box 360 or on your computer.
3. Youtube which is cool.
4. Picas pictures which is neat but almost useless in some cases.
5. iPhone/iPod doc that allows audio and video playback. Very cool, it charges and doesn't display the "this accessory is not made to work with your device" message.
6. Blue ray, DVD, burned DVD's etc.
7. Two fiber optic inputs that allow you to plug in your infamous HD DVD player or some other audio sources. Would have liked to see HDMI here... LG has it.
8. Viera Link which is cool if you have a Panasonic TV like I do. It turns the stuff on off etc by communicating over the HDMI cable.
9. The sound is AMAZING for as cheap as this unit is. The speakers are crisp and clear. Very nice surround sound. I had a Sony STR-K750P, and this Panasonic system is way better.Overall the packaging was slick with everything well packaged for shipment. I couldn't find the electronic version of the manual online anywhere. The specs say it's wireless ready, which means it has a USB port on the back that you have to pay $100 to get the $5 Panasonic WIFI dongle. Total rip off. I just hard wired.
The menus are not quite as elegant as the Apple TV, it also has this hard switch thing.. Basically if you need to adjust any settings, it unloads the web content dashboard thing, then takes you back to the DVD menu. So there is a bit of a lag making adjustments. I don't understand why they just didn't layer the menus and then reload if your settings require it. It also has some sort of quick on feature. Basically if you start it up from scratch, AKA no power supplied, it takes about 30 seconds to boot.. So they added this quick boot thing which makes the unit run in some kind of a standby. It tells you it will consume slightly more power while in this mode. I did have a couple times where the web interface streaming thing had garbled text, I tried powering on off, but it doesn't fully reboot if you use the quick boot. In order to get it to fully reboot, you have to turn it off, then unplug the power and re-connect.
The manual isn't very descriptive and there is a lot of technical jargon as you wade deeper into the settings. Lots of color control, bit level, sound stuff, display stuff etc.
It does have the capability to adjust the surround and EQ levels while playing. It's not entirely intuitive, and the manual is wrong, but it works. When you use the buttons on the bottom of the remote to adjust the surround, it displays on little screen on the unit, the levels. In the manual it tells you to use up and down to adjust these. I must have wasted 20 minutes on this part before I tried left and right and then it worked. Looks like Panasonic needs an updated manual. The firmware on the unit is 1.0 which hopefully means there will be some software updates sooner than later. It would be nice to see layered settings menus, and they have some room on the dash board for new content.
The unit is so new that if you use a Logitec Harmony remote, it won't detect your unit yet. I had to use the older model Bt-300 or something to get my Logitec remote to work.
anyhow.. thats my review... Enjoy!

BRIEFLY
The T400 improves on its predecessors as far as features and raw power, maintains the same ergonomics, connectivity and quality built that make it a corporate darling and manages to add a few 'fun' capabilities that could make it attractive to the individual shopper.
The best things the T400 has going for it are:
- quality build that promises reliable performance
- good CPU and business graphics performance
- fast memory
- impressive and extensive power saving options
- docking capabilities
- fast 7200 RPM SATA HDD
- great keyboard
- Centrino 2 WiFi, Bluetooth for wireless
- Gigabit Ethernet, modem for wired networking
- 3 USB ports, FireWire (when docked, 7 USB ports are available)
- decent 1280x800 (some models even better) display
- very cool running
- compatible with previous models' power supplies and docking stations
The few shortcomings worth mentioning would be:
- gaming graphics performance average at best
- battery life while improved over previous models would barely allow playing a movie
- design, while very functional can't be called 'attractive'
- lacks a built in camera
Reality is most people looking for a laptop have no idea what a ThinkPad is unless they happen to work for some large to huge corporation. This because ever since its beginnings IBM and now Lenovo designed and marketed the ThinkPads as corporate laptops. They threw in everything that a business user may want and omitted most of the (fun) stuff that regular 'consumers' may be looking for to keep the cost down. But, like everything else, ThinkPads evolve and improve too and the T400 comes a long way toward meeting not only 'big corporate' demands but of those looking for a personal use solution as too. Well... maybe I'm getting carried away here but it's probably fair to say that the newer ThinkPads, the T400 included can be a good choice for small business user as well as for the large corporate client.BUILD AND DESIGN
The T400 is yet another example of ThinkPads light, solid build. I've only had this one for a little over one month but I've had the T60 it's replacing for almost 3 years of nearly 24/7 utilization.
My laptop typically moves to and from office several times per week, gets docked and undocked thousands of times, may stay on for many days at a time, sometimes it spends weeks between reboots. Within the same day it may be running on 2 different docking stations and running stand-alone, with DC power or on battery, wired to the network or wireless or sometimes both, outputs video to several traditional monitors, sometimes to 2 displays at the same time, its own display or a projector, have numerous USB devices (external hard disks, security tokens, thumb drives) plugged in and out, and so forth. The T60 was able to withstand all this stress for 3 years with only its internal fan being replaced once in 3 years. I don't know if the T400 will be as solidly reliable but, by the way it feels, I am quite confident that it's likely to be the case.
Like all ThinkPads, there's very little flashy or cute in a T400 - the expected all-black, titanium (I believe) case, same sharp corners but still light and still built in a way that suggests 'quality' and 'reliability'.PERFORMANCE
Since our corporate IT imaged Vista Enterprise on my laptop, it's probably worth noting that my T400 scores 4.7 on the Windows Experience Index - this means that it supports all Vista features well. The lowest scoring components are 'graphics' at 4.7 which is only average and not suitable for graphics-intensive games but just about everything else is top notch. Here are the scores:
5.3 - Processor
5.7 - Memory
4.7 - Graphics
4.7 - Gaming graphics
5.8 - Primary hard disk
Microsoft states that "The scale of the Windows Experience Index ranges from 1.0 to 5.9" so everything other than graphics is all the way 'up there'.
This is what I got in my laptop:
- Total amount of system memory 2 GB RAM
- System type 32-bit operating system (Vista Enterprise as imaged by our IT dept.)
- Number of processor cores 2 - Intel Core 2 Duo P8600 at 2.40 GHz
- 64-bit capable Yes
- Hard disk(s) 160 GB SATA, 7200 RPM
- CD/DVD drive
- Display adapter type ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3400 Series
- Total available graphics memory 996 MB
- Display resolution 1280x800
- Network Adapter Intel(R) 82567LM Gigabit Network Connection
- Network Adapter Intel(R) WiFi Link 5100 AGN
Those concerned with battery life can switch off the Radeon and use the MobileIntel 4 Series Express chipset for that somewhat lower graphics performance.
I am planning to add 2 extra GB of RAM soon and upgrade to Windows 7 and will update my review if and when that happenes.
When compared to the T60 it replaces, the T400 represents a very significant improvement in raw CPU power, graphics performance and display. In runs a lot cooler and its lasts longer on a battery charge.RATING
I am very happy with this laptop's compatibility with the older power AC adaptors and even the older docking stations such as the Lenovo ThinkPad Advanced Mini Dock - Docking station. The Centrino 2 WiFi is an improvement over the Centrino chipset on the T60 - I know because, with my WiFi router in the basement, I can now connect reliably from my second floor bedroom while the older laptop couldn't always make the connections. The T400 running so much cooler is not only an indication of improved battery life but it's also a comfort issue when my laptop sits... on my lap, which it occasionally does.
5 stars are well earned because the T400 succeeded in making on of the best business laptops even better.

Wow! What a sweet device this is for the even the not so techo-inclined. Installation was a breeze as there were only 2 cables to hook-up: power, and RCA jacks. I piped it into my receiver and hit the power button and bingo! it found my network over it's installed handy dandy wireless network adapter (G). It prompted me for my password, which I entered (by turning the knob, which was kind of a pain) and it connected no problem. You can also wire your connection through the network cable slot in the back, however, no network cable was included.
After that, I chose internet radio and I had choices galore. The real beauty of this device is how you can personalize it. Got a Pandora account? Pipe it through this baby with ease. How about Live365? You can do that too. Want to search the internet radio via genre? No sweat. Absolutely amazing I tell you.
I created my Grace account, added stations online and podcasts and after unplugging the device and plugging back in (yah, they tell you to do that so it updates the streams), my customization was found on the device and away I went.
Here is the absolute frosting on the cake...I'm now streaming all of my music from my laptop and external hard drive to this device! Sort by genre, album, album artist, create a queue, you name it, this thing can do it. This kills the Windows Media Center that never worked right with my 360.
Who knew you could have so much fun with a radio??

Failsafe Gigabit N Router for Mobile Broadband Review

Failsafe Gigabit N Router for Mobile Broadband

I have the MBR1200 by cradlepoint. I needed to have this particular device due to having a PCMCIA aircard. The device is extremely easy to configure. Allows for B/G/N wireless networking with 4 onboard 10/100/1000 ethernet ports. Has the ability to failover or load balance between WAN connections. I have not had a chance to try this, but will hopefully be borrowing neighbors USB airmodem to try this out. The VPN will only allow Device to Device tunneling, not software driven so that you could connect an outside single PC to a VPN connection using a PC client. I was under the assumption this would work but it is not a deal breaker. I did have a problem with one laptop connecting wirelessly. I did multiple things to troubleshoot the device but had no luck. What would happen is the laptop would connect and browse the LAN fine, but if I tried browsing the web or outside the LAN it would timeout. I finally got an external USB wifi adapter and this solved the issue. The internal card that would not work in multiple laptops was an Intel Pro 2200b/g.

Sangean WFT-1 Internet Radio Component Tuner Review

Sangean WFT-1 Internet Radio Component Tuner
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Specifications and chips used in the WFT-1 set my expectations for this internet radio to be best in class. It may be if you could get past the rather clunky user interface and barely adequate user manual. If you have a wired ethernet connection everything is pretty straight forward and the device can be configured without incident. Setting up wireless connection is a different story. 1.) If you use wireless security and you happen to have down rev WFT-1 firmware the radio makes a nice door stop. For example, you try to enter a 26 character (128 bit) WEP key you find the display does not show the whole key value past a certain number of characters and the method to set the characters by using the tuning knob to select from a list of possible characters stops working as the display software / user interface has a bug(s) in it making it impossible to accomplish this task. Did anybody test these features?
If you are able to connect the WFT-1 using wired network access - you can get a newer copy of WFT-1 firmware which seems to fix the key entry and display bugs I mention. I still cannot connect successfully via wireless - why I am not sure - I don't think its operator error. You won't get any clues from the user manual if you happen to be that rare individual who actually reads product manuals. A couple of calls and an email to tech support in the USA, I was able to get a name and leave a message - no instant resolution and no useful FAQ or support information on the SANGEAN WEB site. Hopefully I'll be able to talk to someone knowledgeable .... soon!
The WFT-1 has an ethernet and USB port - it would be great if you could connect a computer to either port and configure it from there, at least to get the thing up and running. Another possible improvement is the IR remote which could be used as a keypad to enter and navigate the various configuration modes.
If SANGEAN fixes these product bugs it will be a nice and useful WiFi radio to own. Its other features and the Internet radio website www.wifiradio-frontier.com all work to make this a pretty cool way to find and enter internet radio stations and access all that content. I may be critical but these are core features and its a lot of money to pay for a "prototype" product. I did not exhaustively test the various configuration modes and features the radio has. I believe SANGEAN owes its customers a significant improvement in the quality of its firmware. The unit has been shipping for a while and it should work out of the box as advertised. If its fixed I'll be happy to revise my review - no problem - I think they have the makings of a great product.

I've written two books and a bunch of articles; I've designed and created a website with intensive graphics; I've used it for Skype and Netflix. No problems with any of it. Maybe it's not a Mercedes, but it's certainly a Cadillac. The only real complaint would be the battery life; running heavy graphics and text at full screen power, I'll get maybe three hours. If I ever need more, I'll get an external.

Samsung UN46C6500 46-Inch 120 Hz 1080p LED HDTV (Black) Review

Samsung UN46C6500 46-Inch 120 Hz 1080p LED HDTV (Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
When you spend $1500 on a piece of technology you have certain assumptions and expectations about it. You do your research the best you can and hope that your purchase will be everything you hoped it would be. Occasionally, you are thrown for a loop and presented with some challenges that you didn't anticipate. That's what happened to me when I picked up this excellent TV. My old Sony LCD did not have HDMI ports, so I was relegated to the spaghetti bowl of component hookups to achieve high definition. I just had to have a TV with HDMI, so when I was finally in the market I knew it would have to be at least 46", LCD or something comparable, full 1080p, and have plenty of HDMI ports on it. With the exception of one small issue, this TV is everything I wanted.
I must say that the Samsung UN46C6500 LED TV is astonishing to look at. The colors are rich and saturated, black levels are the blackest I've ever seen, and the images are crisp and clear. The screen is a glossy finish, so it does reflect any light you might have in the room, but it's not overly distracting. The panel itself is super thin, only about one inch thick. The stand is very sturdy. Touch sensitive buttons line the lower right hand corner of the panel (kind of hard to see, but they're responsive). The bezel has a brushed matte charcoal grey strip covering a transparent acrylic (very elegant).
The one problem I have with this TV is not listed anywhere except inside the manual. I didn't see any other documentation or warnings about this, so I was a little disappointed when I encountered it. This TV is not compatible with HDMI versions older than 1.3. My old Onkyo receiver (TX-SR604) came with HDMI 1.1, so the TV would not display images through it. I had always thought that HDMI was backwards compatible. It's not on this TV, and the manual clearly says that if you have any components with HDMI versions older than 1.3 you may have issues with sound and video. Beware.
Because I was so disappointed that I would not be able to use HDMI through my receiver, I decided to upgrade to the Denon AVR-791 (which supports HDMI 1.4 and is 3D ready). Even though I'm another $500 poorer, I'm an extremely happy camper. Watching Avatar on blu-ray with this setup is truly amazing. The TV performs wonderfully and is otherwise exactly what I was wanting. I have not ventured into the internet TV features, but that's on the horizon. Unfortunately, the TV is not wifi compatible (unless you buy a USB adapter), so you'll need to use an ethernet cable (I actually knew this before buying).
Samsung makes incredible LCD and LED TV's. I would highly recommend them to anyone looking for a high definition viewing experience. Hopefully, my review will educate and warn those with older components. HDMI is the way to go, but you can always fall back on component cables if you have to. That just wasn't an option for me. When all is said and done, I don't regret my purchase at all. The end result was well worth the journey.

Vizit 10.4-Inch Digital Photo Frame with Cellular Connectivity (Gray/Black) Review

Vizit 10.4-Inch Digital Photo Frame with Cellular Connectivity (Gray/Black)
Average Reviews:

I bought this for my grandmother so she could get updates from various family members around the country. Fortunately I tested it first to make sure everything worked before sending the gift.
Initial activation failed and customer service stated it was because I bought it from Amazon and not direct, however the problem was fixed one day later. I still have some family members that can not send photos to the frame even though they are set up correctly.
The Vizit web site downscales pictures to a rather grainy resolution. The screen itself is not of the quality you would expect from a $300 device and looks poor when compared to an iPhone or the like. However grandma is 102 and probably doesn't notice the difference. If it was mine I'd return it. Operating the touch screen takes a little practice because the menu options aren't so obvious or easily activated (takes a firm press at times).
At the moment it works except as noted above and she likes it. As the account holder I get emails every time someone uploiads a pictures so I can see which cousins actually use the thing. Overall the concept is great but needs better execution. Future generations of the product should be much improved.

Great product. Advanced knowledge needed to take full advantage of all the features.
Wish list: More memory, more configuration ability with the setup wizard (for less-advanced operators), gigabit ethernet, wireless N. I imagine most if not all of these will make it into the next model upgrade.

I was amazed at the speed of this computer. When I ordered it I was hesitant, but took a chance and LOVE it! It can be used anywhere and only has one cord keeping the space clutter free and clean. If you are looking for a Computer to use at home or work for just about anything except major gaming this is an excellent choice!

HP Mini 210-1084NR 10.1-Inch Blue Netbook - 9.75 Hours of Battery Life Review

HP Mini 210-1084NR 10.1-Inch Blue Netbook - 9.75 Hours of Battery Life
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Trying to buy a netbook after their explosion in popularity is proving to be difficult, as manufacturers pump out far too many variations.
In addition to the listed specifications for each model of the HP Mini 210 (cpu, memory, disk, exterior color/finish), there are other physical variations depending on model number.
Depending on which HP Mini 210 model you get, some differences are:
- A different keyboard ("island" keyboard or traditional keyboard)
- A matte or glossy screen
- A different physical size of battery
- Different wireless support (802.11b/g vs 802.11b/g/n vs 802.11b/g+bluetooth)
At the time of writing, existing reviews and photos make it difficult to tell what you'll end up with. According to the HP website, there are a dizzying one hundred ninety different HP Mini 210 models.
Some of the popular models that I saw had these attributes:
210-1010NR: Matte screen, traditional keyboard
210-1030NR: Matte screen, traditional keyboard
210-1040NR: Glossy screen, island keyboard
I ended up with a 210-1040NR. I prefer the island keyboard, it seemed to have less flex than the traditional keyboard. Touch typing on either keyboard was not an issue, punctuation is in the correct place, and both the shift keys and the spacebar are nice and large. The multitouch touchpad works better than the competition. I installed Ubuntu Netbook Edition 9.10 and everything works out of the box. (Although the internal fan appears to be on regardless of temperature)
For me, knowing the limitations of the cpu, keyboard, and build quality, the 1024x600 resolution of the display is the weak point. I see there's also a HP Mini 210 HD lineup with a higher resolution display, which may be worth considering.
As far as 10.1" netbooks on the market as of February 2010, after handling and typing on competing models from Acer, Asus, Toshiba, and Sony, for me the HP Mini 210 is the winner.
