Cisco 871 Integrated Services Router - router ( CISCO871-SEC-K9 ) Review

If not, just stop considering this right now. This isn't for you.
If you're working on a CCNA/CCNP cert, this thing is a great (albeit expensive) way to force you to learn your way around IOS, since there is nothing that will force you to configure your network properly faster than your own home. If you're working on a CCNP, it's got a lot of the features that are hard/impossible to find on used gear, plus you get the latest IOS updates (note that you'll have to hassle Cisco to enable your SmartNet contract since Amazon doesn't have a reseller code to provide). If anything, this product is worth it just for that: the ability to get your own legal IOS images for use in emulators such as GNS3, where you can set up your own virtual lab to play with/break things.
If you want this for your house, it's overkill unless you've got a 40+ megabit WAN connection (don't consider something like an old 1700 series if you've got that kind of speed, it'll just choke once you start maxxing things out).
Note that this product has the advanced image, which has support for OSPF/BGP/EIGRP, VLANs, IDS (not the best performance though, I'd upgrade to an 1800 series if you want decent throughput on the firewall), advanced QoS and IPv6 support.
If you're getting an 871 for certification practice, get this version. If you're an office with 20-30 computers, unless you KNOW that you need the above features, get the standard version and save a few dollars.
If your office has high bandwidth usage, or has more than 40 computers, start looking at higher end versions (and probably a VAR who can guide you better).

(More customer reviews)As a home user, after upgrading my broadband to 6.0mb/s from Comcast, both my netgear and linksys routers were overwhelmed and couldn't cope up with all the activities for the 5 computers, Xbox360 and Slingbox in the house. After researching all the business class routers, including Netgear, Linksys, Sonicwall and others. Finally, I've decided that Cisco is the best product that would solve my problem. Knowing that this is a sophiscated product, I ordered the most basic router without wireless access (hence less variables to configure). Amazon has the best price among all the websites though you certainly don't get any type of technical support from them. As expected, the router requires some professional knowledge to configure. Being a home user, I only changed very few settings through the SDM software that came with the router and it worked very well within my network. The performance of the router is impressive and I am getting the same download speed if I connect my PC directly to the modem. With all the loaded activities in the house, the CPU usage was just around 40%. This router certainly is of professional quality and doesn't even warm up after leaving it on all the time.
On the flip side, I found that the user interface (SDM) to manage the router is a little over complicated. It could be much more simplier but is still acceptable. The command line interface through the console port is definitely for professional who knows exactly what they are doing. Through the command interface, you can get almost all status and configuration from the router. I dare not to modify any configuration using the console interface because I'm not sure what I'll be changing. In addition, this router is 4 times more expensive than the ones you can get from local retail stores. Overall, I would recommend this router if you need the quality and performance. Otherwise, stay with the consumer products from Linksys or Netgear.

(More customer reviews)This is an excellent product at a great price. I purchased this at another site with the subscription gateway anti-viurus, anti-spyware, and intrusion prevention service. This replaced a Netgear FVS318G firewall. It is very easy to get up and running. I set up a sonicwall account and registered online and linked the box to my profile. Then I plugged one port into my cable modem and the gigabit port into a D-Link 8 port gigabit switch and my network was up and running. The firewall settings take a little time but are pretty easy and can be done after you go live. You can use any ethernet connection on the network to change configurations. The TZ-210 runs silent and cool.

Failsafe Gigabit N Router for Mobile Broadband Review

(More customer reviews)I have the MBR1200 by cradlepoint. I needed to have this particular device due to having a PCMCIA aircard. The device is extremely easy to configure. Allows for B/G/N wireless networking with 4 onboard 10/100/1000 ethernet ports. Has the ability to failover or load balance between WAN connections. I have not had a chance to try this, but will hopefully be borrowing neighbors USB airmodem to try this out. The VPN will only allow Device to Device tunneling, not software driven so that you could connect an outside single PC to a VPN connection using a PC client. I was under the assumption this would work but it is not a deal breaker. I did have a problem with one laptop connecting wirelessly. I did multiple things to troubleshoot the device but had no luck. What would happen is the laptop would connect and browse the LAN fine, but if I tried browsing the web or outside the LAN it would timeout. I finally got an external USB wifi adapter and this solved the issue. The internal card that would not work in multiple laptops was an Intel Pro 2200b/g.

We use firewalls costing tens of thousands of dollars so I am well aware of what is current in an enterprise firewall. While this box does not have the throughput of a large commercial class box, it has all the bells & whistles you could need or want. It is not a novice class device however. You need to really need to know what you are doing and for this box if you do not, you do not want this device. It has features home users would not have a clue about. (More customer reviews)I purchased a Zywall 5 VPN server to replace an older Linux Freeswan solution. It took about a month to set up in my corporate environment, which likely differs greatly from the Zywall's intended configuration.
The Zywall 5 assumes that it is the default gateway to the Internet, and thus lacks the capability of answering ARP requests for its connected VPN clients (which are configured with virtual IP addresses in the same subnet as the LAN). The Linux Freeswan solution could be configured to answer ARP requests for connected VPN clients. Working around this problem required adding an additional network card to the internal LAN firewall, attaching the Zywall to that LAN card, and configuring the internal firewall to forward packets destined to the connected VPN clients directly to the Zywall. This was not as clean as the Linux Freeswan solution, but it worked.
The Zywall 5 supports X.509 VPN certificates, but requires that a certificate authority be set up on a Windows 2000 server to generate the appropriate certificates for the Zywall and VPN clients. This is a bit awkward to accomplish, considering that the same was possible with just a couple command line entries on the Linux Freeswan box.
It is easy to accidentally misconfigure the Zywall, such that the web and telnet interfaces are no longer accessible, requiring a connection with a serial cable to undo the settings. This happened more than once when trying to make the Zywall send packets back to attached VPN clients.
While the Zywall supports up to 10 simultaneous clients, there are severe limitations. Preshared keys cannot be used with road warrior connections (where the client's IP address changes with each connection). X.509 certificates can be used with road warrior connections, but the same client X.509 certificate must be used for all road warriors (this makes it hard to revoke a certificate should a laptop be stolen). The Zywall supports RADIUS authentication in addition to certificates, so that somewhat resolves the need to share certificates. Multiple road warriors can simultaneous connect using the same VPN rule configured in the Zywall.
The Zywall at my site sits behind an external routing firewall. Some of the Zywall's NAT features appear to be buggy in this configuration, directing return VPN packets at the external routing firewall, rather than to the connected VPN client's IP address.
Bandwidth limitation capabilities help prevent attached VPN clients on high speed cable or DSL connections from completely saturating the corporate Internet connection.
Based on my experience with configuring Linux IPTABLES firewalls on the Freeswan box, the firewall on the Zywall is a challenge to set up correctly. Instead of referring to the encrypted network interface connection as IPSEC0 as on the Freeswan box, the Zywall uses verbose descriptions such as (LAN to LAN / Zywall), (LAN to WAN), (LAN to DMZ), (WAN to LAN), (WAN to WAN / Zywall), (WAN to DMZ), (DMZ to LAN), (DMZ to WAN), and (DMZ to DMZ / Zywall) - determining which setting to use in order to restrict traffic between the corporate LAN and a connected VPN client based on the documentation is difficult (even though the manual is 500+ pages). I had to disable the Zywall's firewall to resolve connectivity issues, and rely on the internal firewall to control traffic destined to connected VPN clients. Maybe if one of the verbose descriptions were labeled (LAN to VPN Client) it would be easier to set up the firewall.
The Zywall 5 supports time synchronization to Internet time servers, which is a required feature to keep the time from rapidly drifting from the correct time. Time synchronization is not always successful, nor does it always use the specified time server.
Once the device's limitations are determined, and it is set up to work around those limitations, the Zywall 5 performs very well for its intended purpose with clients using Safenet SoftRemote VPN software.

(More customer reviews)This is one of the best priced and most feature rich routers I've ever used. I've used sonic walls about 5 years in the past and we had a linksys dual wan router before this. Once we needed more than one external ip the linksys just couldn't cut it. The firewall would either be fully off or fully on with secondary ip's, so we had to find another solution. Having used sonic walls in the past I looked at them first but a price/feature comparison lead me straight to the ZyWall USG100.
Setup for the device seems complicated at first, with assigning ip's to machines, ports to groups, and other things that I've not encountered with a firewall before. But these extra steps in the beginning save so much time later on. Instead of having routes and many firewall rules assigned to an ip, you would assign it to a virtual object stored in the zywall which has all of it's information. So when a change to the machines ip is required you don't have to go in and change every single rule and route, you just modify the virtual object and your done.
So far it's done everything we've needed and suprised us with its flexibility. And it would have 5 stars from me except for one slight failing. The vpn setup is a bit unruly when it comes to macs. Just for a standard vpn it requires a free 3rd party program (ipsecuritas) with a bit of setup that a normal user would balk at. Also the ssl vpn which ZyXEL boasts about is just a no go for macs, it just isn't supported.
It's a great product for a great price. It does everything well except for the vpn working with macs. If they can fix that then they would get 5 stars from me.
