HP Deskjet 460CB Mobile Printer with Battery Included Review

HP Deskjet 460CB Mobile Printer with Battery Included
Average Reviews:

Driver loaded first time no problem, battery charged quickly, test print came out perfect, test printed a 8.5 x 11 photo, it took about a minute and came out great on the included standard ink. The printer weight is 5.4 lbs with the battery installed it's not light but it's not that bad either. I owned a Canon portable, it lasted 10 months and had to be replaced under warranty, I quickly sold the replacement, they are slow and noisy, they cost way more, the ink cartridges are very tiny and expensive, I had to refill my own to afford to use it, the HP cartridges hold twice as much ink and are cheaper. If you've got money to burn then get the Canon, if not this HP is a deal and you get a battery with it, what good is a mobile printer without a battery?

Harman Kardon Go + Play Portable Speakers System with Dock for iPod (Black/Silver) Review

Harman Kardon Go + Play Portable Speakers System with Dock for iPod (Black/Silver)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Pros:
Best sounding ipod dock under $500. PERIOD!!!!!
Phenomenally deep and **REFINED** bass for something the size of a toaster.
Bass is definitely NOT the only thing this does well. It's performance on the full audio spectrum (yes, that's midrange too) is also best in it's class!
It's portable!!
(*Cons listed at the end... where they belong)First off I have to address the price issue. I, for the most part, think that the "made for Ipod" logo is license to over price. Almost no Ipod dock is truly worth it's price and I believe for what they do and what they sound like, the are **ALL** over-priced.
That being said, amongst the myriad of overpriced ipod docks, this one is THE ***MOST WORTHY*** OF IT'S PRICE TAG.
Compared to all of the other premium ipod docks this one is amazing. I can say that with confidence because I shopped around for MONTHS before I settled on this one. The only dock that sounds better in this price range is the Geneva Lab Model M which cost $499 (also worth it), which is NOT portable. (little do most consumers know, there are ipod docks that now cost up to $5,000 and more!!!)
The sound out of this thing is so very refined and robust when compared to any ipod dock you would find at the Apple store or any bigbox retailer. They only way you can find anything better is to look at items sold on-line (Geneva Lab) or at very High-End retailers. There probably is no other 'portable' dock that sounds any better. But don't let the word 'portable' fool you. It sounds the best when compared to ANY dock.
I was very surprised at how great this sounds in a noisy Apple store, but wait until you get it home!
WARNING: If you plan on using this thing in a small room with four walls it's Bass may be a bit too strong for you! DO NOT mistake this for BOOMY bass. There's just A LOT of strong deep bass, and BOY IS IT WAAAAYYYY DEEP for something that is about the size of a large toaster!!! Instead of boomy crappy bass, in a small room, this just sounds like you have a nice expensive subwoofer in a very nice home theater set turned up a bit too high. This is NOT a problem if you like a lot of bass, as it isn't for me.
What separates the Go + Play from other docks is that it's not just good at Bass (it's better than all of the others at that, by the way), but it's great at the full audio spectrum. It actually has a strong midrange presentation and really nice highs/treble as well. So many other ipod docks (as well the entire BOSE product line) impress consumers with large amounts of bass (notice I didn't say good bass) and simply decent performance on the rest of the audio spectrum. By the way, this is probably the only dock that actually gets up to 20,000 Hz (20kHz), for those of you who know what this means. Do not expect that out of the Bose, Altech Lansing or Apple docks.
I would definitely say that this is the Audiophile's Ipod Dock in this price range for sure!!!! (if an audiophile would ever, first of all use an ipod and then use an 'ipod sound dock' at all).
I must mention a con or two.
#1 - YOu will not get the same amazing sound with this is operating on it's battery power. This is VERY VERY loud when plugged in, but the volume is limited when unplugged (still no distortion, however). The bass extension and quantity is also, noticeably, cut by about 1/2. I am sure this is done in order to have it last 18 hours on the 8 D batteries as advertise (it actually does last a very long time by the way). Make no mistake though, you still get a ton of bass for something you can carry around in your hand anywhere. You're peers will still be impressed . Note that nothing else is lost. It's treble and midrange performance remains the same.
#2 Your ipod faces up when docked in this dock and you cannot see the screen from afar. This is not a problem me, but may be for others. I tend to just make large play lists and have play in "shuffle" mode anyway.
#3. The remote is fragile.

Go + Play is AC- or battery-operated, so it will go anywhere your iPod or other music player goes--and make your favorite music sound better when it arrives. No matter how or where you use it, it's the sound that sets Go + Play apart.
Designed to Entertain For more than 50 years, Harman Kardon products have delivered--through extraordinary industrial design, innovative technologies, and meticulous engineering--the ultimate listening experience. And for the past 10 years, Harman Kardon has used these techniques to develop some of the world's best-sounding and most-striking-looking multimedia products available. Whether for your computer or your iPod, Harman Kardon multimedia products deliver rich, high-quality sound from systems that look just as good as they sound. In fact, the Harman Kardon SoundSticks system is now in the permanent collection of New York City's Museum of Modern Art. So hook up your computer, dock your iPod, or connect nearly any other audio device, and enjoy the ultimate listening experience from the world's ultimate multimedia products.

A World-Class Listening Experience on the Go The Harman Kardon Go + Play features an eye-catching industrial design that delivers an incredible sound experience from most dockable iPod models, MP3 players, or other audio devices, no matter where you happen to be. Using an arching stainless-steel handle and a flat protective cradle for keeping your iPod secure, the Go + Play works equally well on the go or as a personal home entertainment system.

Using proprietary speaker design and technology, the sound quality from the Go + Play is simply stunning. And with flexible connectivity, this incredible sound can be had from nearly any audio device, not just your iPod. There's even an S-VHS output so you can watch the videos from your video iPod while enjoying their sound in incredible detail through the Go + Play speaker system.

With an included wireless remote control, using the system is a snap. The remote gives you full control of and access to your music, however and whenever you want it. The Harman Kardon Go + Play system is the perfect combination of functional design and unparalleled sound quality.

Flexible Connectivity Great sound shouldn't just be limited to a stand-alone system in your home. You also should be able to have great sound from your music devices when you're on the go. With the Go + Play, you now can enjoy great sound wherever you happen to be. Take it with you anywhere; it works with both the included AC adapter and on batteries. You can rock out for nearly 18 hours from just 8 D-cell batteries, and there's even a handy battery-save feature that will save your battery power when the system isn't in use.

When it comes to connecting your musical devices, it couldn't be easier. Do you have a dockable iPod? Simply place it in the flat protective cradle, and instantly enjoy the sound of your favorite musical artist. The Go + Play uses a OnePoint iPod connector so that, by connecting a standard USB cable to the rear of the unit, you'll have a connection that enables you to synchronize your iPod with your computer. The Go + Play will even charge most iPods when they're docked in the cradle. Don't have an iPod? Well, you can still connect your MP3 player, portable CD player, satellite receiver, or computer through the Go + Play system's 3.5-mm input using a simple cable.

The system even has the ability to connect to a television or display device using an S-VHS connection. Now, watching movies, TV shows, and other video content from your video iPod is just a connection away--and you get to listen to them through the high-performance speakers built into the Go + Play.

Advanced Technology To deliver unmatched high-performance sound, the system features a number of proprietary technologies, including dual-proprietary Ridge transducers. They're made from aluminum, which is inherently strong yet lightweight. This design allows these drivers to reproduce sound with unparalleled accuracy and detail for their size, and means that your music will be played back with a rich midrange and crystal-clear highs, without distortion.

To deliver thunderous bass, the Go + Play uses dual Atlas woofers, which maximize audible output. The Atlas woofers are a high-excursion design, which allows them to deliver the bass response of much larger woofers, and means you'll hear tight, deep bass that will make your music sound more dynamic.

Powering the speakers are two 30-watt Harman Kardon amplifiers, which are designed to deliver high output with minimal distortion. The system even uses highly advanced digital signal processing and equalization to deliver cool, efficient power.

All of that technology comes together in the Harman Kardon Go + Play system to provide a sound experience--whether on the go or in your personal entertainment space--you need to hear to believe.

Easy to Use No need to be a rocket scientist to use the Harman Kardon Go + Play system. Its elegant, stainless-steel touch-volume controls mean that a single touch increases or decreases the volume. And with the included wireless RF remote control, you have the freedom to enjoy your music from across the room, in another room, or even from outside--from up to 20 feet away. With full access to your iPod, you can easily change tracks, browse libraries, adjust settings, and scroll through extras. It's the perfect way to enjoy your Harman Kardon Go + Play system, no matter where you happen to be.

Uniden SC230 Scanner featuring Pre-Programmed NASCAR / Busch Frequencies Review

Uniden SC230 Scanner featuring Pre-Programmed NASCAR / Busch Frequencies
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
A little about me first. I don't have the equipment to analyze the scanner inside and out. I also live in an area with LOTs of radio traffic. Keep that in mind if you want an engineering review, or live in the sticks.
This radio is geared for the Nascar fan. If that's your sole interest in this scanner, then by all means buy it. It is pre-programmed with all the drivers in all the major Nascar events. Since the scanner has "Alpha tagging" you see the name of the drivers. The officials are also tagged along with the scorers and news-media. It also has a built in search of the frequencies the drivers use, so you can easily pick up new cars, or find drivers that made changes. It comes with two antennas, a typical "rubber duck" antenna, and a stubby rubber duck. Either antenna will work fine at the track. The radio is very small, and with the stubby antenna, you should have no problem keeping it on your hip or in a pocket.
This scanner is jam packed with features for a great price. I'm not a Nascar fan, and the scanner suits me fine. The pre-programmed searches are a God send. You can also program your own custom searches and save them. The pre-programmed searches can only be scanned one at a time, but all 10 custom searches can be scanned in any combination. Searches can be run just to scan, or "search and store" With search and store, any received chanell is checked against memory. If it is new, it will automatically store into a system you chose ahead of time, or a defualt one for you to look through later. Alpha tagging is great. You have the ability to enter a name for each chanell. Since this scanner has so much memory, it's a God send. The scanner memory is organised more like a computer, than the traditional 10 banks of 20 chanells memory. It's lengthy to explain, but it's very easy to learn and is a much more convienient way to use the scanner.
Some of the programming features are a tad bit arcane. Where some scanners alow chanells to be moved in and out of memory space with a couple of easy key presses, this one can get odd. Sometimes a chanell has to be copied into the scanners buffer, then you have to navigate around the menu to find the place you want to paste it.
There are so many features and in and outs of the radio I could go on all night. But here are the important things (in my opinion) it's jam packed with great features, at a good price. It's perfect for Nascar, just pick it up and go. The numerous searches make it great for finding new chanells. The memory is organised efficiently and intelligently. The little speaker provides good volume and sound quality. Much better than any of my older scanners. Headphone jack has enough poop to drive my headphones nicely. They even give you rechargable batteries with it.
For those just getting interested in the hobby..... Bear in mind that many Police/Fire agencies are going digital, or trunked. This scanner will not receive digital at all. It scans very fast, but it is not ideally suited for newer trunking systems either. You need to find out ahead of time what your local agencies use. The quickest way is to stop in a Radio Shack store in your town and ask. While the "price is right" for this radio, you may be disappointed if you don't check ahead of time. My local agencies are digital. I live on the Gulf of Mexico, near several airports. I listen to the air traffic, and also the marine traffic out in the Gulf.

BenQ SP820 - DLP projector - 4000 ANSI lumens - XGA 2000:1 contrast ratio portable projector Review

BenQ SP820 - DLP projector - 4000 ANSI lumens - XGA 2000:1 contrast ratio portable projector

We have four of these and use them for outdoor projection in a variety of environments - eg onto buildings, landmarks, streets etc. My review is specifically in relation to that application - we don't use these for home-theatre at close range as the DLP colour-flash (rainbow effect) would be way too annoying. For outdoor "guerrilla" projection though, these are the bee's proverbial knees.
The highly functional design with the handle moulded into the body of the projector, manual sliding lens-cap and the super-fast cool down time make this the perfect unit for projection-on-the-go. The high contrast ratio and brightness are excellent when dealing with situations with some degree of ambient lighting (eg from security lights). You can see examples of actual projection using these units by searching online for VJzoo. While they are obviously not of an equivalent brightness to expensive professional projectors like Christies and Barco, they really do give out a lot of light for the price. It's sad that the model has been discontinued and that none of the newer models seem to be integrating the features that make us love our SP-820's so much - eg the handle being incorporated into the body.

HX300G 300 Lumens 1024 x 768 2000:1 DLP Projector Review

I purchased the LG Hx300g for our local Vectorworks (CAD) user group. We use it to demonstrate CAD techniques and view drawings. Group members bring their own laptops (mostly a Mac group, but some PC users as well) and had no problems with linking to the projector. We were unanimously impressed with its bright clear image and its ability to display the fine detail of the CAD images. I should mention the projector was reasonably easy to focus since this is not mentioned in any of the reviews and it was difficult to achieve an accurate focus on many of the other pico and palm projectors I tried. The Hx300g features native XGA which allows us to display the higher screen resolutions from the laptops without losing much information. Many of the palm sized projectors have the ability to display at higher resolutions, but achieve it through digital processing. At the time of this review, I still haven't found another small LED-based projector with native XGA resolution and decent (270) lumen output so this is worth a look if you don't mind the price. I also tested it on Powerpoint and a number of other computer applications like SketchUp and the images were all clear with good color rendition. And I had the same good luck with HD movies using an HDMI cable to connect to a DVD player. I don't think the HDMI cable was provided with the projector, but it did come with a great carrying case which easily holds the projector (in a separate compartment) and all the cables and power cord/power brick. The projector does have a little adjustable front leg which worked great for leveling/aiming, but I would recommend a sturdy mini-tripod (not a gorilla pod though).
Note, the 1 watt (stereo) speakers were underpowered even if you're holding the projector in your hand, so you'll need a proper sound system if you want to hear movies or a webinar. My initial tests with the FM signal to wirelessly send sound to a radio didn't work out, but I should probably work on that a bit more.

Klipsch iGroove HG All-in-One iPod Shelf System Review

Klipsch iGroove HG All-in-One iPod Shelf System
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The most important aspect of any speaker system is the fidelity with which it reproduces one's music. As one would expect from a true Hi-Fi speaker manufacturer, the Klipsch iGroove HG does a very nice job of reproducing high quality sound in a relatively compact space. Everything from Strauss to the Crystal Method to Led Zeppelin has sounded near-flawless in my testing, with only mild distortion of bass at high volume levels. Realistically you can't expect a small speaker system to match the range of a large floor-standing speaker set, but compared to the competing Bose, Altec and JBL systems, the Klipsch does a better job of reproducing a wide range of music with crisp highs and rich lows.
The only gripe I have about this system is the remote. Aside from being a little flimsy, you cannot control the iPod's menu with it. You can jump forward and backward, pause and play and raise or lower the volume, as well as powering the unit on or off. Still it's not enough to warrant a switch to others systems IMO. You will not find a better compact iPod Speaker system, especially not one which is compatible with a wide range of iPods from newer and older generations. Highly recommended.
-------------
~ 3 YEARS LATER: it's rare I get the chance to come back to a review of a product like this years later, but I want to post a couple more comments. First off, the unit is still in top shape. Very solidly built, no problems with speakers blowing out, or cracked parts after years of use (indoor and out). Last summer we used it quite a bit on our patio for lunchtime cookouts, with good success. Loud enough to keep you bathed in music, not loud enough to annoy your neighbors 30 yards away. The one annoyance that has come to bother me a little bit (but not change the rating) is that whenever you turn this thing on and hit play... it powers up, the iPod powers up, and the music starts playing at top volume, requiring you to turn it down right away. It has become habitual with me where i just start powering down the volume on the unit before the music starts. Not sure if this is a problem with my iPod (3G), but I doubt it. Either way if you're still looking at this as an option for a nice-sounding, reliable iPod speaker, it's still worth a look. That says something.

Olympus 25mm f/2.8 Pancake Lens for Olympus Digital SLR Cameras Review

Olympus 25mm f/2.8 Pancake Lens for Olympus Digital SLR Cameras
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this lens from B&H about a week ago. It was the only one I have seen anywhere in stock, and I grabbed it up instantly, and no others have appeared.
Complaining about the lens cap will be common to all reviews. It is a metal screw-on disc, that is hard to work unless the camera is facing up. Order a 43mm pinch lens caps when you order, along with a protective haze filter. Don't plan on a thick filter, such as a polarizing filter or a stack of filters, because you will cut off the corners of the image. Even though this is a standard quality Zuiko (expensive but not REALLY expensive) it has a metal (not plastic) connector linking it to the camera body. If you have lived your entire photographic life with a zoom lens, you may not like a prime. You do your framing by zooming your feet back and forth from the subject--or move the subject. Be careful at the rim of the Grand Canyon!
This lens is thin and light. It won't zoom, of course, but if you have 8 or 10 megapixels, you can crop and still leave respectable resolution. It's great for when your evolt series Olympus DSLR has to serve tourist duty or for holidays with the family. Auto focusing in low light is accurate and, although this is not really a macro, my rose pictures are quite presentable as are those of people.
If you already have one or more of the kit lenses for the 400/500 series, you probably have the 50mm point covered. If you want portability and don't mind the challenges of a prime, this might be for you. I suspect that it will be cheaper a few months down the road.

JVC Kaboom System for Ipod Review

JVC Kaboom System for Ipod

(More customer reviews)
ok.. i have been waiting for this Kaboom to finally make it to the states.. i received mine today.. some things to mention.. this is a 40 watt kaboom.. not the 52 watt older kaboom.. the side firing subs are also smaller.. if you love the deep deep bass of prior Kaboom models.. dont buy this one.. if you like moderate "in your face" mid/bass.. then this Kaboom is for you.. it's almost the same size as older kabooms.. and has a managable wieght.. so carrying it around wont break your back.. item is "MADE IN CHINA" unlike older kabooms that were solidly biult in Indonesia.. and it shows.. cheaper plastics and parts were used in this Kaboom..
item lacks the durable shoulder strap/remote holder from previous Kabooms.. it's now a funky strap/plastic lachy thingy.. it also does not come with batteries for the remote.. a sign of cheapness.. is it worth $300? nope.. $150-$180 perhaps.. IPOD intergration is simple at best.. it does simpe functions.. but it's not fully intergrated.. but the main reason i bought it is that it protects the IPOD from damage.. this it does well.. i did not try the USB input.. but i'm sure it works as intended..
bottom line.. if you want the BASS that Kabooms were known for.. this will not fill that void.. stick with the older units
but if you want a nice compact carry anywhere self contained boombox for your IPOD this will do fine.. it does get plenty loud..
sign of the times.. the day of quality electronics is no more..

The new RV-NB50 Kaboom boasts 40 watts of power and retains the original's general design -- a large cylindrical shape with a woofer at each end. Bass enhancement circuitry ensures room-rattling low frequency performance. Digital era upgrades include the iPod dock, which is shielded from the elements by a protective door, and USB Host for playback of music files stored on a USB mass storage device. In addition, there's a CD player that can handle MP3 and WMA file playback, and an FM tuner. For additional flexibility, there's a front audio input. A remote control makes it easy to operate while a shoulder strap makes it a cinch to carry.

This projector has been great for doing classroom presentations from my laptop. It's very bright (2500 lumens) and alot less expensive than other models. The three negitives are:
1. There's no HDMI input, so this wouldn't be the best projector for a home theater setup.
2. The resolution is limited to SVGA, perfect for business presentations but there are better options for watching movies.
3. The feet used for adjusting the height and tilt of the projector are cheaply made and hard to adjust.
But all of these are a small sacrifice for an affordable projector this bright. It's so bright I can leave the classroom lights on without washing out the image.

HP H470wbt Officejet Mobile Printer Review

HP H470wbt Officejet Mobile Printer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The HP H470wbt is HP's answer to the "on the go" printer. If you haven't read the spec you will see this particular incarnation comes with a battery for on the road use. The battery is charged while on the printer much like a laptop.
The overall quality of print is passable but not top of the line nor a good choice if you want nice photo-quality prints.
However, if you need to print normal text or perhaps a page from the internet, it does fine. The pages come out at a fair pace (better than one would expect from a small printer) and the quality is acceptable.
The footprint is relatively small and if you plan to carry around with you, expect to use something like a backpack or camera style backpack for your laptop and the printer.
The blue tooth that comes with it works well enough. Just remember to install the blue tooth drivers then deal with Windows itself (in that order).
The one real caveat relates to small printer small ink cartridges. One has to realize to keep this unit small and consume little power, the cartridges are on the small side. Fortunately, they are easily found at various merchants and not an odd special cartridge(s). There is the option to get slightly larger ones but again, the larger ones are also fairly small in output.
Last on the not so good list - HP insists on some of their inkjets to use flimsy mechanisms for housing the ink cartridges. In this case they have some "wires" bent to work with the install assembly of the cartridges. This is asking for trouble sooner or later.
I have not ran enough paper through to experience any paper feed problems and thus, cannot comment on this. This is an important part and as those who have had laser printers and inkjets know this can be a problem that occurs over time.
Overall the unit is passable and in some respect very nice. I give it three stars rather than four because of the ink install assembly. The blue tooth, compactness, reasonable output are all to be appreciated.

I love the Apricorn padlock drive, I have two; one 'regular' 640 and one 'pro' 640.
Both perform with acceptable speeds for an encrypting device.
However, I have never gotten the eSata interface to work reliably. I would be interested to read comments to the contrary. Anyway, here is what I mean by 'unreliable':
* device is recognize just fine.
* device transfers files to-and-fro
* BUT, when I hash the file on the source and destination, they are different. This doesn't happen when using the USB interface. During this test, I transfer ~100GB files.
* this was done on a different machines, with different eSata interfaces, with the same results
* this was done with a different eSata external drive (actually a KingWin ezDock), with success
I can only conclude that the eSata capability is defective in some way. It would be nice because it transfers (albeit with errors) at about twice the speed of USB. But, at least the USB is reliable...
BTW, for those having trouble with getting the eSata to work at all, I use WinXP 32-bit, and I have to plug it in before booting up, with the auxilliary power cord, and have to shut the computer down before removal. I.e. not hot-swapable. Also, I enter my password during the bootup process before it gets to the OS loading. Maybe this helps someone.
Also, for those having trouble 'safely removing' (from USB), make sure that there are no locks on the drive, i.e. no open files or even directories (e.g. no explorer windows, or command prompts). Then you can safely remove. Well, you may have to try more than once to wait for caching to finish writing, but it will happen (this happens even on other drives/thumbdrives). If you don't have the 'safely remove' icon in your tray, you can use
%windir%\system32\rundll32.exe shell32.dll,Control_RunDLL hotplug.dll
to bring up a similar but more detailed UI for removing.

Harman Kardon Go + Play High-Performance Portable Loudspeaker System with Dock for iPod (Newest Model) Review

Average Reviews:

... unfortunately Amazon are selling it for $100 over the MRSP of $349. It is available elsewhere online for $299.
The only difference between this newer version and the old one is that this version is fully compatible with newer iPod models. It is not officially compatible with the iPhone, however it will charge it and play via the dock.
The sound really is great - clear highs, deep bass and distinct mid tones. What you can't see in the photo is another set of subwoofer speakers on the back. It really kicks out a good volume.
If you have an iPhone, you might as well get the cheaper version (or buy this new model at a more reasonable price from B&H). The iPhone works fine with both models, it simply tells you it is incompatible, but in fact works fine.

Yamaha TSX-140 Desktop Audio System with iPod Dock (Gray) Review

Yamaha TSX-140 Desktop Audio System with iPod Dock (Gray)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Let me start by saying, I'm a music producer that
enjoys a variety of different genres of music, so
when shopping for a stereo system I need for
the unit to be able to have all genres of music
sounding good.
I tested the unit by bringing my phone (with mp3s)
to the store I bought it from and played a few
songs. I could tell right away this stereo was
REALLY good. If you like way your music sounds on
a Bose, then you'll like the TSX-140. It really
sounds great, whether you're playing pop, easy-
listening and even sounds great when playing dance
music.
In addition to the unit being able to play audio
via AUX, I also wanted a CD player and USB input.
This box does it all!~ So, I was pretty much sold~
I actually paid more than Amazon is selling it for,
but I'd buy it all over again. To me, it's that good.
But don't take my word for it, go have a listen for
yourself~ I think you'll be shocked at the vividness
of the music you've been listening to all this time!

NEXTO eXtreme3 500GB Digital Hi-Speed OTG Backup Storage Review

NEXTO eXtreme3 500GB Digital Hi-Speed OTG Backup Storage
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I just received my Nexto Extreme 2700 500gb device today, and have put it through the paces. It works great on my SDHC Cards. I took over a hundred pictures and it was extremely quick in downloading them. I am using a 16gb Transcend Class 6 card. The download time was something like 20 seconds. Next I hooked it up to my Sony Handycam camera and it downloaded the movie files very quickly. No problems there. It recognized the drive after I had everything turned on and dowloaded it with no problems. I hooked the Nexto to my computer through my USB connection and it downloaded all to my computer quickly and without a hitch. The only problem I had with the device is this: I took over 100 pictures and downloaded the card to the Nexto. Then I took an additional 20 pictures. I was under the impression the Nexto would recognize the new pictures and would just download them, but it didn't. It downloaded 120 pictures instead of just the 20. I tried it several times and the results were always the same. It downloaded the whole file and not just the new pictures. Not a really big deal, but I read that this was a feature the Nexto had and unfortunately was unable to make the Nexto perform that way. I looked through all the literature that came with the Nexto and nowhere do they mention that feature. All in all I am very happy with the Nexto. The speed is really fast. I just wish it would recognize my previous downloads and upload only the new pictures. Addition --- I printed out the manual [...] and figured out what I was doing wrong. Now once a card has been read, when more pictures are taken and the card is inserted again, the Nexto gives the choice of copying new files or copying the whole card. I now give this product 5 STARS!!!! It is a great product in every way.
Update 8/9/09 I used the Nexto while I was in Vietnam for just about a month. I took 4259 pictures and 495 videos and all of it was stored on the Nexto. It downloads so quick it is amazing. I also have a Wolverine 7000 160gb, and it is so slow it was unreal. Both worked good but the Nexto just screamed and the Wolverine was dead slow. I backed up video from my Sony Handycam, pictures from my Canon SD500 camera (SD), my Nikon D90 (SDHC), and my Kodak video mini camera. I couldn't be happier with the Nexto. It was well worth the price. Rolla

TASCAM DP-008 8-Track Digital Portastudio Review

TASCAM DP-008 8-Track Digital Portastudio
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
After wanting a digital multi-track for a long time, I finally decided on this model, and I'm glad I did.
One thing that is not included in a list of specs is the usability factor. I've purchased my share of electronic devices for making and recording music over the years. Just looking at a dry list of specs has often been my method of deciding on what to buy. Well, on paper the DP-008 looks good, but it's not until you use this to cut a few tracks that you realize how well it is designed. I'm SOOOO glad I didn't buy the DP-004, as this model is clearly the results of Tascam eliminating the weaker aspects of the 4 track model just in time for the 8 track version.
I have seen a lot of digital multi-tracks that look good on paper, but to use them is a real pain. The fact that the DP-008 has all the individual track knobs means that you don't have to go flipping through pages on a menu or choosing the "hot track" in some other way. Here it's all laid out logically and makes tweaking the final stereo mix a piece of cake. Sure it would be nice if there were level sliders rather than dials, but these work just fine.
I use this model to record myself playing guitar and bass, run a Boss drum machine into it, and I record vocals with an external mic though a small mixer that has some helpful effects on it. You don't need a mixer, though, as the included mics are quite good. I am able to record several tracks, "bounce" them if I want to, and then write them to a stereo master mix. Then, I export that mix on the unit itself (sounds weird, but basically you're just creating a wav file that can be seen by a computer). The final step is connecting the DP-008 to a computer and merely dragging the song files over to the computer. I then use Audacity to convert it to an ogg file or mp3.
I use Linux and the process of transferring songs to the computer is very simple. In the past you would have received a useless cd-rom with a crappy "song transfer" program and maybe some crapware to go along with it. I'm glad that Tascam has decided to treat the customer right and state it clearly: There is no need for special software. Once you export the song, it will show up as an external storage device and you can simply transfer the files over to your computer, whether it's a PC running Windows or Linux, or a Mac.

Concentrate on your music and not on the recording process with the easy-to-use Tascam DP-008 8-track digital Portastudio, which can capture CD-quality audio wherever you roam. Using a Secure Digital (SD) memory card, you can record two tracks simultaneously and work with up to eight tracks in a multi-track project.
You can use built-in microphones to grab ideas, plug condenser mics into the XLR inputs or plug a guitar directly in to lay tracks. There's even a metronome and chromatic tuner built-in for tight-sounding tracks. The DP-008 also allows you to digitally bounce tracks to make room for more, and touches like editing and undo make recording stress-free.
Each track on the DP-008 has its own row of knobs for level, pan and effects, just like Tascam's classic cassette Portastudios of the past. The effects knob sends to a built-in stereo reverb processor with hall, room, stage and other effects. Each track also has EQ to tailor the sound for your mix. When your song is complete, mix it to a dedicated stereo track while riding levels and flipping pan as much as you want. You can export your mix, or even individual tracks, as a WAV file.
