Panamax M5400-PM 11-Outlet Home Theater Power Conditioner Review

Panamax M5400-PM 11-Outlet Home Theater Power Conditioner
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Went to some local brick and mortar stores and found they a lot of them had Monster Power voltage regulators and surge protectors. While they looked cool they also had high prices. I first saw the Panamax surge protector at Best Buy and the black finish and LED lighting got my attention. Did some research on the 5400-PM and decided that this is the one I will get. Bought it at a popular auction site and saved hundreds of dollars.
What I like about the 5400-PM model is that it has a high clean power level, 11 outlets, and high current outlets for my sub and receiver. I currently have 7 audio/video and gaming devices hooked up to the 5400-PM.
The black finish also looks great on my black wood TV stand and HDTV.
What I don't like is that there's is a very faint hum coming from the unit. I think it's the fan though. You can only hear this when it is dead silent in the room. The blue lighting on it's highest setting can be annoying so I set it an the lowest one.
I mainly got this unit to ensure none of my expensive HT equipment gets damage from surges etc.
Note: I have a PS3, Xbox 360 Elite, HD-DVD, Onkyo A/V receiver, Samsung 58in HDTV, 500w subwoofer, and cable box are all hooked up to the Panamax 5400-PM.

The Panamax M5400-PM improves system performance and prolongs equipment life by providing a consistent level of optimal power to your equipment. Level 4+ Power Cleaning and Filtration eliminates common symptoms of contaminated power (including loss of detail, pops, hisses, hums and visual artifacts), and allows your A/V equipment to perform up to its full capability. Panamax's patent-pending AVM circuitry continuously monitors the incoming power as displayed on the digital voltmeter. In the event of an under-voltage or an over-voltage, a flashing red lightning bolt will be displayed in the voltmeter. Power to the connected equipment is automatically turned off if either of these conditions is detected. When voltage returns to a safe level, power to the equipment is automatically reconnected. The M5400-PM is designed to provide noise isolation between 5 isolated outlet banks, so that any noise created by an A/V component cannot contaminate the power going to equipment plugged into another outlet bank.

Sharp AQUOS LC40D68UT 40-Inch 1080p LCD TV Review

When it came time for me to upgrade my TV's, I researched very thoroughly for a TV that has as little lag as possible as my fiance and I game HEAVILY. I had read on some forums that Sharp TV's in particular are among the best, and now that I purchased one I must agree. Any HD resolution, set on game mode, has zero lag. Button presses are instantaneously shown on-screen. So your Wii, Playstation 2 and 3, Xbox, XBox 360...all of those play fantastic. If you play old school games, the lag is next to zero. It's so minimal that I can still pull off combos and counters easily in Street Fighter Alpha 3 or Darkstalkers for the Playstation 1. And this TV has another big plus: it can play standard definition games (240p) through component cables. What this means is that you can play, for instance, playstation 1 games (at their 240p resolution), on a playstation 2 over component cables. The TV does all the process work, and on "Game Mode", it's fantastic to play. 480i plays fantastic as well.
Picture quality is great, and if you're not on "game mode', the lag is still very minimal. GET THIS TV if you game, you won't regret it!
The only downside to me is that it doesn't have s-video inputs for other old-gen games, as composite is blurry as it always is on HD.
If I have time I'll do a video review of this product to show how little (or zero) lag this TV actually has.

Sony VAIO VGN-FW465J/B 16.4-Inch Laptop - Black Review

Sony VAIO VGN-FW465J/B 16.4-Inch Laptop - Black
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I got this laptop as a birthday present for myself. Before getting this, I browsed different computers and considered Dell XPS 16, Mac Pro 15 inch and Lenovo Y650 as well. After all the comparisons that I made according to the design & features of all the laptops, Vaio FW won over a lot of mile.
Price: The price is very reasonable having jam-packed features. If you customized all the features that Vaio FW has to the other aformentioned units, i bet it will cost a lot lot more. See below prices comparison according to specs that Vaio FW465 offers with certain differences:
a.) Sony FW - From the main Sony site it is Less than 1,200 (including the mail-in-rebate) plus free 100 music downloads while from amazon.com it will be 1,029 (including rebate)
b.) Mac Pro 15 - Around 2k! The difference in specs with the Vaio FW are the following: backlit keyboard and battery life are the pros for Apple as I can see it. Apple have Mac OS but Sony offers free Windows 7 upgrade, sooo I still stick to that. The graphic card of Mac is Nvidia 9400m while Vaio have the astonishing HD4650. Vaio have bigger and brighter screen not to mention the Dolby sounds and Blu-ray capability - Mac Pro? .... NOT!
Disclaimer:Mac fan boys might read this and may say that I am just poor or anything (like they always do to people who didn't choose Mac) ---- you're wrong. I can afford Mac but the features they offer doesn't meet my standards. So chill and understand that people have different options in choosing computers.. peace!
c.) Dell XPS 16 - From its site - Around 1,650 having the same specs as the Vaio FW. I am also alright with this, but I have been reading so much negative reviews about the heat and the death blue screen for Dell lately. Soooo, that actually makes me a little bit cautious about recent Dell products.
d.) Lenovo Y650 - Around USD1,300 without the blu-ray capability, only 5400 rpm HD, having NVIDIA GeForce G 105M 256MB Graphic card and Screen LED 1366x76. This is still ok, knowing that Lenovo's are really durable.
Main Features: I like how they customized it to have 2.53ghz of processor speed with 320gb of memory having 7200rpm. That feature itself is already a plus compared to any other laptops out there. The blu-ray capability makes your HD experience of watching movies really great combined with High Definition Audio with Dolby Digital Live and the brightness of the screen. Nobody else (as of now) does great Blu-ray experience the same way Sony does it, for me. The graphic card was also upgraded to Ati Radeon HD4650 with 1gb dedicate dvideo RAM making your gaming experience really great. I also like the classy look of Vaio FW with the hinge and just seeing the Vaio logo makes people WOW already. Also, almost all my gadgets (PSP, my cellphone, camera and music player) are sony, so I find this convenient having the magic gate card slot. The motion eye camera, the pebble black key panels and the multimedia dedicated buttons are awesome as well. One more thing, if you guys are concerned about the heat being produced by this laptop - don't worry because it has a great cooling system and dock design. The heat is common to all laptops but this one is a lot cooler than others (compared to my old gateway, dell, macbook and my dad's toshiba).
I just wish it has a backlit keyboard to make it a complete package already (though the screen is too bright that you can see the keyboard panel as well, during night). Also, the bloatwares should be lessen -- I don't find this an issue but I know it's a hassle for some. You can delete them anyway but you have to allot some of your time in doing so. One more thing, you have to do a lot of things to maximize the performance of the laptop during the setup.
I don't need to make this really long. Overall, the unit is very nice and it has totally awesome features with it. This is a great buy and you can never go wrong with Vaio FW. I bet you can make use of this laptop for many years without being out-dated. I am a meticulous person when choosing my gadgets --- and this unit meets my expectation!
I ordered the Vaio FW neoprene together with this unit and it fits quite well.

Panasonic DMC-LX3S 10.1MP Digital Camera with 2.5x Wide Angle MEGA Optical Image Stabilized Zoom (Silver) Review

In the last 6 years I've used a couple of compacts which I've since got rid of after upgrading to DSLRs (Canon XT and then 40D). For a while I was waiting for a compact that I could carry with me anywhere I want, and particularly to parties and other social occasions where bringing a DSLR is really not an option.
When this camera was announced it really looked like a dream compact for me. Fast, wide and optically stabilized lens is ideal for low-light indoor shots. The design is stylish and beautiful, the camera is quite compact and it has all the controls an advanced amateur would need.
Further the sensor is essentially as big as they get in compact cameras and with almost reasonable 10mp (still about 5mp too many but not as bad as 12-15mp you would get in any other compact with a comparable sensor).
I've had the camera for a couple of weeks now (and shame on Amazon for not having it in stock a month after it appeared in some other big stores). I like it a lot and the camera delivers on most of Panny's promises. Here are some of the experiences.
1. The image quality is certainly and noticeably better than the ulracompact cameras (like Panny's own FX series). It is however still a compact camera ... meaning there is visible noise even at ISO 80 and lots of noise at ISO 400. However noise reduction algorithms seem to be doing quite a good job and ISO 80 pics look very nice ... sometimes almost like a DSLR. And even at ISO 400 most shots are good enough to keep. In general the output from this camera is comparable to my 40D at 8 times the ISO (that is 80 on LX3 is about 640 on 40D and 400 LX3 is a bit better than 3200 on 40D). Fortunately, with fast lens and image stabilization I almost never need to use ISO above 400.
2. The camera is very responsive and the autofocus is fast and seems accurate.
3. Changing ISO through the menus is a bit of a pain but a variety of useful ISO regimes are provided. In general controlling all the options is not very easy ... but I guess that's the compromise you get with such a small camera with a large LCD.
Update: it is possible to simplify ISO changing by reassigning a button for this purpose. The drawback of this is that now reviewing pictures becomes more cumbersome.
4. Aspect ratio switch on the lens is more useful than I thought ... saves quite a lot of cropping.
5. Shooting in RAW+jpeg is fast enough to be usable.
6. The camera is quite a bit bulkier than it might seem (and the given dimensions are misleading since they do not include the lens and other protrusions from the main part of the body). It is not shirt-pocketable both because of its size and weight ... but fits fine in a jacket pocket or purse.
7. The macro capability of the camera is really excellent.
8. Having user customizable preset regimes on the dial is very useful and quite a luxury not present even on Canon XSi DSLR (shame on Canon!)
Overall it's a great compact camera: in my opinion certainly the best on the market by a margin (I've studied the market very thoroughly). It is in the same league as Canon G-series (which I owned back when they were the best and liked a lot) but fits my current needs much more than a Canon Gx. I also think it's a real bargain at around $400.
But it is still a compact camera with a sensor 1/8 area of most DSLRs and 1/20 of full frame (mostly pro) DSLR. So those expecting miracles like close-to-DSLR quality or usable ISO 800+ might be disappointed.
==================================================================
A quick update in response to a comment:
1. At widest setting of the zoom there is quite significant distortion especially noticeable in 16:9 regime. There is also noticeable loss of sharpness in the corners. This might not look good in some shots (like if a straight like or someones face is close to the border) but nothing too bad for most of the shots.
2. HD video is very good for a compact. There is no zooming, no auto focus and sometimes exposure adjustments are not very smooth. So I'd not recommend to treat it as a camcorder. But overall it gives detailed and reasonably smooth video (well not quite 30fps smooth). I've just made a quick comparison with Canon HF10 dedicated compact camcorder (which is as good as they get these days). In bright light LX3 cannot quite match the 1080p detail of Canon. But in relatively dim light it is about as good. Also LX3 has a huge advantage in wide angle. All dedicated consumer camcorders have widest angle around 40mm which is much worse than 24mm of LX3.
Another impression which I have with LX3 and certainly did not have with other compacts is that it is a tool worth learning and investing some time and experimentation. My pics with this camera keep improving even the first ones were already decent.
For anyone interested in sharpness and noise level comparisons with some cameras you can check out
http://www.dkamera.de/testberichte/panasonic/lumix-dmc-lx3/bildqualitaet
=======================================================================
Update Dec 17: Finally Photoshop and Lightroom started to recognize LX3 raws. The quality of my pictures is now even higher: colors much more pleasing and noise reduction less "blotchy". Overall this camera gives results well beyond what I thought to be possible for a compact camera. So it still has my highest recommendation.
Update Jan 27, 2009.
The single most annoying thing about this camera is its lens cap. Having to remove it slows you down. Attaching via a string leaves it dangling ... which detracts from the aesthetics of the camera and can add a bit of extra shake. Without the string it's likely to get lost ... and I have not seen any replacements on sale. Anyway, fortunately, creative peoples found out that Ricoh LC-1 lens adapter can be easily modified to be used on this camera. I've did this and it works much better than the original cap. I've uploaded some pictures of the result to the product images. Use google to find the modification instructions.

I love the notion of having a file and web server in my home. While I am no server expert, I have advanced skills and can solve about any computer issue.
I configured the NAS with no problem. The only issue I have is I can't see the device via HTTP over the www (outside my network).
I have spent frustrating HOURS with technical support. These people are capable of solving simple problems for customers that have little technical skill, but are unable to solve the more complex issues.
I even sent a letter to the VP of sales and asked him for his help. I need to speak with someone that knows more than me as I have spent hour's trouble shooting on my own. The technical people I speak with aren't able to solve the problem... Can you believe that the VP of sales never followed up with me and never had anyone call me?
Right now I am stuck with a device that can only be seen from within side my network. I didn't buy this device for that sole reason.
Netgear has MAJOR support challenges.. I don't know what else I can do and no one at Netgear wants to help me. I would not suggest buying a Netgear device.

HP Mini 210-1084NR 10.1-Inch Blue Netbook - 9.75 Hours of Battery Life Review

HP Mini 210-1084NR 10.1-Inch Blue Netbook - 9.75 Hours of Battery Life
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Trying to buy a netbook after their explosion in popularity is proving to be difficult, as manufacturers pump out far too many variations.
In addition to the listed specifications for each model of the HP Mini 210 (cpu, memory, disk, exterior color/finish), there are other physical variations depending on model number.
Depending on which HP Mini 210 model you get, some differences are:
- A different keyboard ("island" keyboard or traditional keyboard)
- A matte or glossy screen
- A different physical size of battery
- Different wireless support (802.11b/g vs 802.11b/g/n vs 802.11b/g+bluetooth)
At the time of writing, existing reviews and photos make it difficult to tell what you'll end up with. According to the HP website, there are a dizzying one hundred ninety different HP Mini 210 models.
Some of the popular models that I saw had these attributes:
210-1010NR: Matte screen, traditional keyboard
210-1030NR: Matte screen, traditional keyboard
210-1040NR: Glossy screen, island keyboard
I ended up with a 210-1040NR. I prefer the island keyboard, it seemed to have less flex than the traditional keyboard. Touch typing on either keyboard was not an issue, punctuation is in the correct place, and both the shift keys and the spacebar are nice and large. The multitouch touchpad works better than the competition. I installed Ubuntu Netbook Edition 9.10 and everything works out of the box. (Although the internal fan appears to be on regardless of temperature)
For me, knowing the limitations of the cpu, keyboard, and build quality, the 1024x600 resolution of the display is the weak point. I see there's also a HP Mini 210 HD lineup with a higher resolution display, which may be worth considering.
As far as 10.1" netbooks on the market as of February 2010, after handling and typing on competing models from Acer, Asus, Toshiba, and Sony, for me the HP Mini 210 is the winner.

Dell Inspiron i14R-1761MRB 14.1-Inch Laptop (Mars Black) Review

Average Reviews:

I recently bought this to replace my 5 1/2 year old 17 inch Dell laptop. I wanted a smaller laptop because 17 inches is too large to really fit in the lap. The size of this is perfect in that regard, though it is noticeable that web pages get cut off at the bottom a bit, forcing me to scroll down, but not badly enough to really bother me.
The screen is crystal clear, it's very fast for both processing and opening web pages. It has the new line of Intel laptop chips, which I suppose is good. It's also kind of cute and streamlined. I didn't realize it until the computer arrived, but it plays Blu Ray disks, in addition to DVDs and CDs. It also has a little slot so you can put your digital camera card in and it sees it as another drive, allowing you to manipulate the picture files however you like and to easily clear of all or most of them from the camera card. Much to my surprise I actually like Windows 7. They copied the Mac OS in style, making it very pleasant and simple to use. Usually I complain about Windows OS being overbearing and intrusive, but not Windows 7.
My computer came with a partitioned hard drive. I'm admittedly too lazy to figure out how to put what on which partition, so I called Dell and they told me how to delete the 2nd partition, which was quite easy. About Dell customer service. The first call I made, it was just like the other reviewer says, the guy read from a script, didn't know anything and when he didn't know an answer, he just kept repeating himself. I got so frustrated that I told him I was hanging up because he obviously couldn't help me. I called back again 20 minutes later and got someone who really knows Windows and computers and who didn't need to read off of a script. He was wonderful and pleasant and even had a sense of humor. The moral of the story is, if you don't like who you're talking to, hang up and call again. No need to get mad.
There are still one or 2 things for me to work out, but it's a great little laptop with a nice big hard drive. I got it 2 days after I ordered it and for $633, it can't be beat.

ASUS U35F-X1 Thin and Light 13.3-Inch Laptop (Black) Review

ASUS U35F-X1 Thin and Light 13.3-Inch Laptop (Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
After a great deal of personal debate I decided to go with the Asus U35F because of the overall build, less than an inch thick, long run time, and a much stronger processor than you would get in any netbook or culv laptop. After playing with it for a while I would say that for the most part I love this laptop. The build quality very good, the keyboard is better than most and the touch pad is very nice. For those that may be wondering the touchpad is slightly pitted so you can feel when you are on it. I set it up so that a 2-finger tap is a right mouse click and a 3-finger tap closes the active window.
As for the decision to go without the dedicated graphics...it plays every type of streaming video file I can throw at it including 1080P youtube videos without a single studder or issue. For those of you that think you are going to find a use for the dedicated graphics I think you are fooling yourselves. There is not much you can't do without it other than play graphic intensive games and you can't really do that with a 310M anyway.
On the negative side...this is the worst screen I have ever used in terms of vertical viewing angle. I do not exagerate when I say that you have about 10 degrees up or down before you get serious color inversion and whiteout if you are above the screen.
All in all though since you should generally be directly in front of the screen and I'm sure other screens in this price range are not the best on the market either I would reccomend this laptop to anyone. Overall awesome laptop!
