HP LaserJet P2055dn Printer Monochrome Review

Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)Update: If your printer hangs on some print jobs, as mine did, go to the HP website and download the March 2010 version of the firmware (or a more recent version if available). The new firmware seems to have solved this problem. Also, it's now possible to buy 3rd party, refilled cartridges. On two occasions, I have bought the cheapest cartridge I could find on the Internet, and both have worked fine, with quality indistinguishable from HP's expensive cartridges. Finally, since I never print graphics, my comments apply to text-only printing.
When I switched to a new computer running Vista x64, I was forced to replace my HP Laserjet 5P because HP failed to provide a driver that worked competently with the 64-bit operating system. Based on the second comment to this review, HP apparently subsequently fixed the nonfunctional 5P x64 driver after Vista had been out for more than a year.
I chose the P2055dn because of auto-duplexing and the standard 128MB of RAM. I was initially disappointed by the poor print quality and noise of the printer with the factory default settings. After digging into the clunky, digital-only manual and much trial and error, I created new HP Printing Shortcuts for 1-sided and 2-sided documents with ProRes quality instead of the default FastRes quality, and I set the default Printing Shortcut to be my new 1-sided definition.
I also set the printer to Quiet Mode. To set the Quiet Mode, press the down arrow on the printer several times until you reach System Setup. Push the OK button, then toggle down to Quiet Mode with the down arrow. Press OK, then use the down arrow to toggle the Quiet Mode On, press OK, and press the carriage return key to go back to Ready.
After these changes, the printer runs slower, but the print quality is excellent and the noise level is similar to that of the 5P. I also turned off the aggravating low toner reminders that are worse than spam email.

Dell Studio s1557-1148CBK 1557 15.6-Inch Laptop (Black Chainlink) Review

Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)well, i bought this online but when i went to best buy i felt i could have got a better deal. The laptop is a bit on the heavy side and the battery is large (great battery life) but there is a bulge on which the laptop rests. This makes it a bit uncomfortable when you put it on your lap.
I recommend thinking of the DELL xps instead. It is lighter and has better aesthetics and just a 100 dollars more or so

Dell Inspiron 11z Pentium Dual-Core ULV SU4100 1.3GHz 2GB 320GB 11.6" WLED Windows 7 Home Premium w/Webcam Review

Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)This computer is somewhat of a cross between a netbook and a regular laptop. It's far bigger than I expected, and I find the screen adequate for light work (word processing, surfing the Internet, some spreadsheet work.) When I get to my office, I just plug it into my external monitor and work off of that. The speed is quite good, the battery length is outstanding (6 hours with the 6-cell battery), and it's a handy little machine. For the price, I think it's a good deal. I don't do any gaming, so this was more than enough for me. I do stream video from Netflix, and this works like a charm.
Here's what I DON'T like:
I hate the touch pad. Often when I'm typing, my cursor will simply disappear because the palm of my hand brushed the touch pad and accidentally caused the mouse to click somewhere else. I don't have large hands -- I have typical female hands. The left and right buttons on the touch pad by contrast are very difficult to push.
The keyboard is rather cheap feeling and took me a while to get used to.
The screen is incredibly glossy, meaning that it's nearly impossible to work outside (too much glare), and I even have problems working under bright lights inside sometimes.
It's heavier than I expected since I got the 6-cell battery. This also creates a protrusion on the back, making it bigger and causing me to buy a larger case for it. However the awesome battery life makes this worth it.

Dell Inspiron 15 (1545) Midnight Blue Laptop Notebook PC: Intel Pentium Dual Core T4200 (2.0GHz /800Mhz FSB/1MB cache), 4 GB DDR2 SDRAM, 320 GB 5400 RPM SATA Hard Drive (5400) , 15.6 WXGA Laptop Screen Display with TrueLife, 8X DVD +/- RW w/dbl layer, Genuine Windows Vista Home Premium Review

Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)I've owned several laptops and would be considered an intermediate to advanced computer user. I've built my own desktops, tweaked a few laptops and owned various brands of laptops including HP, Fujitsu, Sony and Dell (Inspiron, Latitude and XPS series).
I purchased this laptop directly from Dell (got a better deal than current Amazon pricing) based upon Consumer Report's November 2009 article recommendations where the Dell Inspiron 1545 was rated a 'Best Buy' for every day computing. I purchased it for my husband who will use it primarily for watching an occasional movie from Netflix streaming wirelessly on our home network, emailing to share jokes and videos with his friends, and browsing the Internet.
After setting it up, which other than running into a snag with my home network was a breeze, and playing with it for about an hour, these are my impressions. Yes, there are more 'cons' than pros in this review, but the bottom line found when you ask yourself 'What do I need?' and buy accordingly.
The PROS:
+ Adequate hard drive for storing photos, videos and music.
+ Good speakers! Better than those on my Dell XPS, for which I paid 30% more less than a year ago.
+ 3 usb ports
+ Bright 15.6" display; nice size. I sometimes find the 13" on the XPS too small and the Fujitsu had a 17" which is fine for a desktop replacement but really adds weight to the overall unit.
+ Virtually silent running. No fan noise to speak of and yet...
+ Stays cool to the touch! Not worried about overheating on this one. '
+ 7 in 1 media reader.
The CONS:
- No HDMI ports.
- No wireless 'n' network capable card. Has a card that will do 'b or g' speeds.
- Windows Vista versus the new Windows 7.
- Keyboard is OK, but not as responsive as some others I've used.
- The touchpad seems a tad small and the buttons (left/right click) seem too low by comparison to the keyboard. It could be the size of my hands (small...) but I tend to think it's just the layout.
- The high gloss finish inside and the glossy display (versus matte finish) look cool, but do show fingerprints and reflect light to the point of sometimes being a nuisance.
- There is no 'media only' button like on the XPS where you don't have to turn on the computer to watch a movie, but this is something that higher end laptops would have and may simply be a perk to paying more.
- Heavier than some others, but at under six pounds, it's still not too bad.
- Matte finish on the outside shows greasy smudges where you've touched it. I have the same issue with my XPS, but frankly I've never found a finish that doesn't show something.
- Not a multi-media or gaming powerhouse. It will play dvd's and games, but if you're buying a laptop and really into those things, spend a bit more and make sure you upgrade your video and audio to support your interests. The 4GB of memory really helps as much as anything and I didn't notice any issues with the media I tested.
SET-UP:
Open the box, charge the unit and follow the prompts to get started. You will want to have your home network settings (security code) available to you for ease of set-up, and perhaps a USB flashdrive with your email contacts, favorites, photos and documents available for transfer from another computer, although you can do that via the home network in Windows too.
BATTERY LIFE:
Battery life seems to be about 3.5 hours. I think the 4+ hour estimate is high, but that undoubtedly is also based upon what things you are doing on the laptop and mobile power settings.
CONCLUSION:
If you purchase this Dell you are getting a solid workhorse for every day computing for a fair price. I think it's quality is certainly higher than an Acer with the same specs, and backed by a 1 year warranty from Dell. (Having had a Dell laptop that needed the keyboard replaced recently, I truly think the warranty service provided by Dell - they came to my house the next day - is exceptional and worth the small price hike over some other brands.)
The Dell Inspiron 1545 is great for a student or grandparent who wants to keep up with emailing and basic computing tasks. Regarding this specific model, if it had a webcam and Windows 7, it would be better (there are other 1545 models that have them...), but it will never be a multi-media powerhouse. If looking for HDMI inputs or a fast graphics card for gaming, look elsewhere.
WIRELESS NOTE: If you are having trouble connecting to a wireless network, be sure you check the included 'set-up guide', page 10, to find the wireless key on your keyboard. You can inadvertently press this key and turn off your wireless capabilities. Handy on airplanes... not so handy at home.

DELL INSPIRON 1420 14.1-Inch Laptop Review

Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)I bought this Dell inspiron about a year ago to replace my 6-year old gateway. I looked around at prices for lightweight but powerful laptops including macs, gateways, hps and sonys. The inspiron is not the lightest available for its power class (core 2 duo, 3G ram, 250G hard drive) and it even got miserable reviews on the battery life, but for the price, there was no competition.
Pros:
Regular battery regularly lasts over 3.5 hours even after 1 year of daily use.
9-cell battery regularly lasts over 5 hours even after 1 year of daily use.
It's pink :)
Built in webcam, speakers, microphone all great for skyping etc.
SD card reader and USB's on BOTH sides (6 total) make for nice use of a portable mouse & other gadgets.
Cons:
It's really fat and heavy. In fact my first impression of what I thought would be a lightweight model was "oh crap it's heavy!" When I tried to buy a protective sleeve, the store told me they didn't have any for laptops as fat as the inspiron :)
The mousepad is consistently unresponsive! Not only does it fail to recognize my strokes if my finger accumulates even a little perspiration, but it often takes several minutes after bootup to recognize vertical strokes, and only moves horizontally even after opening and running several programs. It also randomly "clicks" so that when I'm typing, my cursor jumps around despite taking extra care not to touch the mousepad (ironically, it just did it as I was typing this sentence!). This is ultimately not cool and perhaps the main motivation for not liking this machine -- you can't like it if you can't use it.
The built in mic and webcam weren't recognizable by linux software until the 9.10 release. pretty upsetting from a company that sells linux based machines.
Despite having a 4-year customer support and insurance plan, I still can't figure out how to get hold of a Dell representative -- their website is completely incomprehensible making my customer support agreement nearly useless.
Finally, the screen is pretty dim. in fact, the dimness that they use to generate the battery life is so dark that it hurts my 26 year old eyes to read. even now, plugged in, the screen's whites are actually pretty gray.
------------------------
So overall I really expected more from a machine that, after customization, cost me about $1200. When you spend that kind of money on something, you really expect it to be kind of pleasant, if not even enjoyable to use. After all, dual processor, huge hard drive and battery life of 3-5 hours isn't even competition any more.
...but, it does work. Furthermore, owing to my genius decision to switch to linux, it also recognizes every printer I've ever plugged in to immediately without installation of drivers. This is pretty cool.

Dell Inspiron i1564-8634OBK 1564 15.6-Inch Laptop (Obsidian Black) Review

Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)My wife's desk top tower finally had enough. Because of her work as a grade school teacher she had a school assigned laptop and had come to really appreciate a laptop's utility and convenience. We examined features, prices, etc on every laptop in the $800 and under price range and picked this model Dell from Amazon. We've both been blown away by it's display clarity, speed, ease of use, and features like full numeric keypad, built in camera, as well as the features of the loaded Windows 7 OS.
As for Amazon's performance as a seller? Exceptional! I can't promise this will be your experience, but we took the "free shipping" option available at the time, and got the computer "the next day!" This is a fine computer at a great price from an excellent retailer.

Dell Inspiron 546 MT BRAND NEW 2.3GHz/2GB/320GB/DVDRW/Vista Basic/Black Review

Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)This Dell Inspiron follows the current styling and aesthetics of their Home PC offerings. This tower computer is of modest heft with a glossy faceplate outlined with subtle silver trim. It looks very pleasing sitting next to my Gateway monitor. The front features a DVD drive DVD RW writer and CD burner in the top bay, a empty drive bay slot (hmm, blue ray would go nicely there!) and what looks like another expansion bay is a slick door cover for Audio Input / Output and two USB 2.0 connectors - great for syncing my iPhone. The specs of the machine sport a single core AMD processor, initially gave me some misgivings and prompts a quick search to see if the CPU is upgradeable to dual core or higher (it is). As it turns out the single core AMD LE1300 CPU is surprisingly capable and powers through all the tasks our family throws at it: photo editing, netflix streaming, DVD burning and web browsing. If needs expand I can always get a triple core or quad core AMD cpu (albeit one that uses the "e" for energy efficiency such as the 8450e -best for this consumer level power supply). For now, the family is satisfied with the performance and stability of this Dell entry level system. The price for this was inline with our needs also!
Opening the case reveals a easily accessible set of memory slots. With two empty slots available on a standard 2GB build, we next put two additional sticks of ram in, which were added with no problem. The 300GB drive is ample for our needs as we long since learned to use large external USB drives to store precious photos, video and other information that is a pain to move when buying a new system.
One surprisingly useful feature was the HDMI video out - we used it with Amazon Video on demand movies and our projector which has HDMI for fantastic results. The integrated ATI video solutions worked wonderfully. According to AMD the onboard video is compatible SLI with certain ATI cards (ATI 3450 primarily) you buy and put in the PCI-E slot. Good to know as I have been interested in some PC version of some console games.
The Vista Basic is fine once Service Pack 2 is applied and all Dell updates [...] for the machine are applied. The Dell Inspiron 546MT has been a solid performer and provides more than enough functionality for most home users. It runs very quiet and I am sure it is drawing less power than the Pentium 4 system it replaces!
Our family is glad to have the Dell Inspiron and would recommend it!

Dell Inspiron Mini Duo 3487FNT Convertible Laptop/Tablet (Foggy Night) Review

Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)I got this a week ago and have been playing with it nonstop since.
There are three things you need to be aware of when purchasing this:
1) The screen is even smaller than on most netbooks because of the flip design. The versatility more than makes up for it though.
2) The battery is not removable and is good for about 3 hours.
3) Windows 7 Home Premium only likes to view drives on other machines running Windows 7. My home PC was running Vista. It could look at and access the drives on the Duo; but the Dou will only look at drives in it's Homegroup. Only Windows 7 supports homegroups. I upgraded my desktop to Windows 7 Home Premium and now they network amazingly well. Setup was a snap.
I have thick fingers, but I haven't found that I need to use the stylus (bought separately) with it. The keyboard is well laid out. The touch screen took a little getting used to. Voice recognition works very well in a quiet environment. Between the three, I haven't even bothered to install the wireless mouse I got to use with it.
It boots up quickly. It's nice and fast. It has a lot less bloatware than most machines come with.
I was surprized at how solid it feels because it's so tiny. The entire unit looks and feels well made.
It's small and light enough to go anywhere; but powerful enough to do real computing. It's a great second computer. It syncs easily with my desktop now that both run W7. I was able to share my internal and external drives between both machines, including the DVD burner in my desktop.

Dell Inspiron i14R-1708MRB 14-Inch Laptop (Mars Black) Review

Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I'm not a fan of Dell's because of bad reviews and bad customer support. My first three choices would be toshiba, sony vaio and hp. I had returned 2 toshiba M series because of the noisy fan issue, and a sony vaio due to irratic touchpad and lid issue. Later, This one came up here in amazon with a good price deal and packed with the features that I need. All I can say is, I am happy with my purchase.
Pros: fast, quiet, style, comfy keyboards (best if you have small hands), dedicatd playback keys, good speakers( way better than sony vaios but not greater than toshiba M series harman kardon's), bluetooth, 1.3 pixel webcam, good battery life, intel i3 processor, fairly light, good touchpad.
Cons: Very nice finish but.. (fingerprints and smudges welcome), so-so graphics (comparable to hp dm4, but better. If your doing some photo editing the results can be slightly unprecise or unaccurate.. well it's a laptop), no blu-ray, unlighted keyboard.

Dell Inspiron i14R-1761MRB 14.1-Inch Laptop (Mars Black) Review

Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)I recently bought this to replace my 5 1/2 year old 17 inch Dell laptop. I wanted a smaller laptop because 17 inches is too large to really fit in the lap. The size of this is perfect in that regard, though it is noticeable that web pages get cut off at the bottom a bit, forcing me to scroll down, but not badly enough to really bother me.
The screen is crystal clear, it's very fast for both processing and opening web pages. It has the new line of Intel laptop chips, which I suppose is good. It's also kind of cute and streamlined. I didn't realize it until the computer arrived, but it plays Blu Ray disks, in addition to DVDs and CDs. It also has a little slot so you can put your digital camera card in and it sees it as another drive, allowing you to manipulate the picture files however you like and to easily clear of all or most of them from the camera card. Much to my surprise I actually like Windows 7. They copied the Mac OS in style, making it very pleasant and simple to use. Usually I complain about Windows OS being overbearing and intrusive, but not Windows 7.
My computer came with a partitioned hard drive. I'm admittedly too lazy to figure out how to put what on which partition, so I called Dell and they told me how to delete the 2nd partition, which was quite easy. About Dell customer service. The first call I made, it was just like the other reviewer says, the guy read from a script, didn't know anything and when he didn't know an answer, he just kept repeating himself. I got so frustrated that I told him I was hanging up because he obviously couldn't help me. I called back again 20 minutes later and got someone who really knows Windows and computers and who didn't need to read off of a script. He was wonderful and pleasant and even had a sense of humor. The moral of the story is, if you don't like who you're talking to, hang up and call again. No need to get mad.
There are still one or 2 things for me to work out, but it's a great little laptop with a nice big hard drive. I got it 2 days after I ordered it and for $633, it can't be beat.

Dell Inspiron iM1018-2628OBK 10.1-Inch Netbook (Clear Black) Review

Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)I have a primary laptop that I use at home but needed something that was lighter to carry around school, do basic internet browsing and word processing. After searching for months, despite the mediocre reviews on Amazon I decided to settle for the Dell Mini 1018. Note, I paid much less from the Microsoft store (new & not refurbished) when it was on sale for less than $220 (including tax).
Pros:
-Lightweight
-Battery Life is about 6-6.5 hours in lower screen lighting(though some other netbook have a longer battery life this is enough for me). Even on the lowest screen light setting is usually good enough for me to see well.
-Keyboard is nice and I am able to comfortably use it.
-The build quality seems great.
-I can browse Youtube, CNN videos and other videos usually without the image being choppy or distorted (unless I'm running several programs).
-Considering the small size, the speakers are surprisingly great. Even much better than my Gateway T-6836 laptop though I won't raise the volume above 80 in fear of blowing them.
-This netbook doesn't get very hot like my laptop does after several hours of use. Thus not having an internal fan doesn't seem to be an issue.
-The built-in camera and mic does allow me to use Skype and AOL instant messenger video chat with no problems.
Cons:
-The netbook is slow but adequate. This isn't so much as a con as a fact of all netbooks' performance.
-Comes with Window 7 starter (though I've upgraded to Window 7 Enterprise and I am happy).
-The mouse pad is a bit wider than needed but a bit shorter than I would like).
-No plug for external microphone though that wasn't a function I cared for. It does have one built into the computer.
-No HDMI. However, that wasn't a deal killer for me.
-Two USB ports. Again, not a deal killer for me.
-Also you have to disassemble the laptop (almost everything but the screen)if you choose to upgrade to the 2GB DDR3 RAM which may be a daunting task for many. Other comments:
This is a netbook with 1024x600 resolution and you might be able to play videos in 480P but it may be choppy. If you expect to play 720P you'll want to look elsewhere because the screen resolution/video card will not allow you to watch it without the video/audio being choppy to the point where you won't be able to stand it.
I've read in other reviews that the laptop goes into sleep mode when you plug in the charging adapter. This is true, however you can change settings to resolve the problem. I found the solution to be as follows: Go to Start, Control Panel, System and Security, System, Advanced System Settings, Hardware, Device Manager, Network Adapters, Wireless LAN, Power Management, and then uncheck "Allow computer to turn off this device to save power" and finally click "OK." Since doing that my netbook has not shut off when the charging adapter is plugged into the netbook.
Also the netbook doesn't come with recovery disc to restore your netbook should it crash. I would recommend that to avoid paying for the software from Dell should it crash, owners' should hook up an external cd burner and with a cd copying program (NERO) and then they can create a recovery disk (in my case it took two cds).
I've installed Avast anti-virus, Adobe Reader, Microsoft Office, CCleaner, Nero, Microsoft Words, Instant Messenger and various other programs and so far they've all work as expected. Conclusion:
Bottom line this netbook is a great to bring to school. It met my requirements of portability, affordability and performing basic computer and web browsing needs. I bought this knowing it wouldn't replace my laptop, however, I have found myself using it far more than I had originally intended it for. I would recommend this to family and friends.

Dell Inspiron One iO2305-2545-MSL Desktop Computer (Mercury Silver) Review

Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)I seriously looked at this all-in-one computer to replace my laptop. It has a really HUGE, breathtaking screen in person -- more like a flatscreen TV -- and a simple desktop without all the pre-loaded junk. I loved it. Staples had them for $699 and I think that's an excellent price for what you get. I talked with a technician at Staples about the Dell vs. the HP Touchsmart and he said these Dells were a bit slow and had some problems. So I went home and I also read some test reviews online and they said the same thing. Not what I wanted to hear because I was seriously loving that screen.
I opted for the HP Touchsmart instead and sure enough when I bought that computer there was a brand new Dell Inspiron all-in-one on the desk a tech was diagnosing for freeze up problems. Maybe that particular unit was a lemon -- I don't know. But it may be better to wait for the next generation on these.

Dell Inspiron Mini 1018 4034CLB Netbook (Clear Black) Review

Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)Every review that questions the speed of this netbook perplexes me. It does everything I want to to with normal speed. I use Firefox, Skype, Steam, iTunes, Pidgin, Thunderbird and all of them work perfectly and load up in a matter of seconds. I am dual booting Ubuntu 10.10 Netbook Remix and even that work really well. The only hardware that didn't work right after install Ubuntu was the Wi-Fi adapter. I was able to find drivers and install that easily and I am new to Linux. On Ubuntu, I was able to get Skype, Pidgin, and Thunderbird installed in addition to what comes with Ubuntu (Firefox and others). On Windows 7, I am running Steam and on there I have been able to run games like Plants vs Zombies, Flight Control HD, Doom 1&2, Star Wars Jedi Knight series. It actually surprises me that this netbook can play Half Life 2 and Doom 3 at low settings pretty smoothly. If you are looking for a machine to play games made after 2005, you should not buy this machine, but if you are looking for something to be very portable this is a great machine. The power plug is a standard 3 prong power plug that is small enough to take up only one socket on a power strip. My only complaint with the keyboard is that the Caps Lock key does not have a light on it that indicates if Caps Lock is on or not, but Dell has a program install that tells on the monitor if Caps Lock is switched on or off. My biggest complaint with the track pad is that the left and right click buttons seem flimsy, but I haven't found anything online saying that anyone has had them break.
Great netbook for portable web browsing and media use.
