I bought this tv and sure, it has a great picture and all, but it doesn't have a special laser that stuns burglars and annoying houseguests like the salesman said, and i'm bummed. maybe my supermodel wife disabled it when she read the instructions.

Apple iPod 30 GB White M8948LL/A (3rd Generation) OLD MODEL Review

Apple iPod 30 GB White M8948LL/A (3rd Generation) OLD MODEL
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I received a new iPod 30GB for Father's day (Thanks Sweetie!). I've used about a dozen or so prior mp3 devices, and I have noted some issues that haven't been represented in any other review, which I wanted to point out to folks considering buying an iPod.
First off, it's a great device overall. 30 GB is a lot of space and fits my 500+ CD music collection fine. I think the battery life of 8-10 hours is great (my previous device, the Nomad Jukebox, had 40GB, but got 2 hours battery life if I was lucky!) and I like it's looks and size a lot. There are some mildly annoying UI issues but nothing I can't live with. The case, and most importantly the screen, scratch really easily, so you have to be careful how you handle it (it's small enough to put in your pocket--just don't keep anything else in that pocket!).
I'm a Windows user, and I'll add my report that the MusicMatch software that ships with the iPod is disgraceful. I loaded it on three different computers, (moving the firewire card around each time) and it never would transfer music to the device. Finally I downloaded an *older* version of MMJB and got music to transfer. Its own user interface is awful and I really hate that it makes you IMPORT all of your music into ITS library. It's clearly designed for the novice user, with no expert-mode features that accommodate folks like me.
But the biggest criticism I have of the iPod is something that Apple just plain got wrong. There is no support for building [persistent] playlists on the device. This really bothers me. It's apparent that iPod's designers had a built-in assumption that people wouldn't mind being tethered to their computers for playlist management and other things, but not everyone works this way. I tend to not hook my device up to a computer unless I have new music to download, which can be weeks. I really want the device to be usable indefinitely without a computer.
But there's one important thing you can't do very well on the iPod without a computer: Create playlists. Yes, you can add songs and albums to the "on the go" playlist, but there are some serious flaws with that feature's implementation:
a) there is only one on-the-go playlist
b) this playlist is temporary. It is blown away the instant you dock your device (why, WHY? This is such a brain-dead design choice it boggles the mind.)
c) when adding entire albums to this playlist, the album order is not respected. They seem to go in either alpha or random order, I haven't figured it out yet.
This makes it tougher to use the device the way I want. I'd like to be able to string together either a list of individual songs or, more often, entire albums and listen to them. But the albums go into the playlist with the song order wrecked, which is annoying. And having to abandon a list I've already created to be able to create a new one is truly annoying. And it's heartbreaking that, after I've put together a really good mix on the device, it will be summarily discarded the instant I dock. I truly can't understand the rationale behind this one.
So on the whole, it's a good device, the best out there for its combination of size, capacity, and battery life. There are some annoying problems that might detract from your enjoyment a bit if you, like me, find album order important and like to create custom playlists anywhere you are. But even with those flaws I'm glad to own mine.

I've owned several laptops and would be considered an intermediate to advanced computer user. I've built my own desktops, tweaked a few laptops and owned various brands of laptops including HP, Fujitsu, Sony and Dell (Inspiron, Latitude and XPS series).
I purchased this laptop directly from Dell (got a better deal than current Amazon pricing) based upon Consumer Report's November 2009 article recommendations where the Dell Inspiron 1545 was rated a 'Best Buy' for every day computing. I purchased it for my husband who will use it primarily for watching an occasional movie from Netflix streaming wirelessly on our home network, emailing to share jokes and videos with his friends, and browsing the Internet.
After setting it up, which other than running into a snag with my home network was a breeze, and playing with it for about an hour, these are my impressions. Yes, there are more 'cons' than pros in this review, but the bottom line found when you ask yourself 'What do I need?' and buy accordingly.
The PROS:
+ Adequate hard drive for storing photos, videos and music.
+ Good speakers! Better than those on my Dell XPS, for which I paid 30% more less than a year ago.
+ 3 usb ports
+ Bright 15.6" display; nice size. I sometimes find the 13" on the XPS too small and the Fujitsu had a 17" which is fine for a desktop replacement but really adds weight to the overall unit.
+ Virtually silent running. No fan noise to speak of and yet...
+ Stays cool to the touch! Not worried about overheating on this one. '
+ 7 in 1 media reader.
The CONS:
- No HDMI ports.
- No wireless 'n' network capable card. Has a card that will do 'b or g' speeds.
- Windows Vista versus the new Windows 7.
- Keyboard is OK, but not as responsive as some others I've used.
- The touchpad seems a tad small and the buttons (left/right click) seem too low by comparison to the keyboard. It could be the size of my hands (small...) but I tend to think it's just the layout.
- The high gloss finish inside and the glossy display (versus matte finish) look cool, but do show fingerprints and reflect light to the point of sometimes being a nuisance.
- There is no 'media only' button like on the XPS where you don't have to turn on the computer to watch a movie, but this is something that higher end laptops would have and may simply be a perk to paying more.
- Heavier than some others, but at under six pounds, it's still not too bad.
- Matte finish on the outside shows greasy smudges where you've touched it. I have the same issue with my XPS, but frankly I've never found a finish that doesn't show something.
- Not a multi-media or gaming powerhouse. It will play dvd's and games, but if you're buying a laptop and really into those things, spend a bit more and make sure you upgrade your video and audio to support your interests. The 4GB of memory really helps as much as anything and I didn't notice any issues with the media I tested.
SET-UP:
Open the box, charge the unit and follow the prompts to get started. You will want to have your home network settings (security code) available to you for ease of set-up, and perhaps a USB flashdrive with your email contacts, favorites, photos and documents available for transfer from another computer, although you can do that via the home network in Windows too.
BATTERY LIFE:
Battery life seems to be about 3.5 hours. I think the 4+ hour estimate is high, but that undoubtedly is also based upon what things you are doing on the laptop and mobile power settings.
CONCLUSION:
If you purchase this Dell you are getting a solid workhorse for every day computing for a fair price. I think it's quality is certainly higher than an Acer with the same specs, and backed by a 1 year warranty from Dell. (Having had a Dell laptop that needed the keyboard replaced recently, I truly think the warranty service provided by Dell - they came to my house the next day - is exceptional and worth the small price hike over some other brands.)
The Dell Inspiron 1545 is great for a student or grandparent who wants to keep up with emailing and basic computing tasks. Regarding this specific model, if it had a webcam and Windows 7, it would be better (there are other 1545 models that have them...), but it will never be a multi-media powerhouse. If looking for HDMI inputs or a fast graphics card for gaming, look elsewhere.
WIRELESS NOTE: If you are having trouble connecting to a wireless network, be sure you check the included 'set-up guide', page 10, to find the wireless key on your keyboard. You can inadvertently press this key and turn off your wireless capabilities. Handy on airplanes... not so handy at home.

Audio and Speakers: Intel High Definition Audio 2.0 , (3) USB 2.0 compliant 4-pin ports, 15-pin VGA video connector, Integrated network connector 10/100 LAN (RJ45), AC adapter connector, Audio jacks (1-line out, 1 Mic-in), 34 mm ExpressCard slot, 7-in-1 Media Card Reader

I have had 24 hours to play with and customize this computer. So far it is meeting my expectations.
My last computer died on Thursday. It had a swivel screen that you could write on with a pen. It was a good computer but finally ghosted. After it died on Thursday I started thinking about getting a new one. My requirements were:
1. Small
2. Runs Microsoft office
3. Monitor out connection.
4. Swivel screen
5. windows 7
6. decent battery time.
7. decent internet
8. email
9. Not to expensive
10. Physical keyboardIronically, I was talking to my wife Thursday night (she was across the country)and telling her about my computer. I had turned on the t.v (something I rarely do) and QVC was on. They were advertising an earlier version of this computer for about $80 more than Amazon was asking for this computer. I did a quick search of the QVC site, then and internet search and wound up here. When I saw that they had a more updated version but cheaper it seemed like fate. I could not find any reviews of this version of the computer, but the previous had plenty of reviews that were mostly positive. since the two computers are basically the same, I decided to take the leap and am happy so far.
1. The reviews for the computer said that to get the full potential from this computer you would need to add a gig of memory and upgrade windows 7. I played around with the computer for a couple of hours before getting the upgrades. Definitely a noticeable difference and worth it. The memory cost about $35 and the windows 7 upgrade was $70. Altogether it cost about
$540 to get this computer up to its optimal configuration. The only reason I did not give the computer 5 stars is because I would rather them to have put a higher price tag on the computer and send it out with 2 gigs of memory and the windows upgrade then to have to go out and waste time doing it myself.
Pros: Meets my needs. I can type, surf the internet, take notes, read a book, use the keyboard or touchscreen. The computer works well, is relatively cheap, and seems to be sturdy. Is responsive and the hardware requirements are up to snuff for my needs. The touchscreen is more responsive than I thought it would be. You have pinch to zoom capability on both the touch screen and the mouse pad.
Cons:
1. Needs work to get up to optimal ability.
2. The keyboard is small and takes some getting use to. The page up key is right next to the shift key. I hit it better than 1/2 the time when I go to capitalize a letter and the cursor winds up in the line above it. It is annoying but I am sure I will get use to it. Also the cursor sometimes seems to have a mind of its own and I will be typing in one spot and the next thing I know I am typing somewhere else on the page.
Note: The computer would not read the extra gig of memory I put in until after Windows 7 was installed. Just something to keep in mind.
These are my first impressions. I will post an update in a week or two after I have had a chance to use more feature and put some serious time on the computer.
Overall, right now if your needs are similar to mine, I have no problem recommending this computer.
