Acer Aspire AS5740-5255 Notebook PC Review

Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)I bought this computer for my dad. He is not a computer genius so he just needed something that would help him with email, word, and other common tasks.
The good: comes with windows 7 loaded. Which is better than anything else made by microsoft
The bad:
The keyboard id no good. Hard to type and weird design
The mouse is worse. It has the gestures pad, which doesn't always obey your commands
The mouse button is super hard, you will need to workout your fingers before using it.But the worst thing about is that it comes with NO CDs. nothing. Not a recovery CD not or the windows 7 CDs. Nothing.
Not to mention that it comes preloaded with tons of free trials (which we all know aren't really free).

ASUS U80A-RSTML05 Ultra-light Laptop with 14" LED LCD Screen, Intel Core 2 Duo T6600, 4GB RAM, 320GB SATA HDD, Altec Lansing Speakers, Windows 7 Review

Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)I purchased this item after having umpteen notebooks, DELL, HP, etc.
This is THE BEST notebook I've ever had, crystal clear screen, excellent performance, decent and usable battery life - even when playing games!!
Probably the nicest feature - if one would put a gun to my head and force me to choose from the many, would be the fact that this notebook doesn't get hot. I can actually sit in my comfy chair and work for hours on end without the notebook reaching meltdown and burning a hole through my legs, chair, the earth's crust and popping out the other side of the planet like most other notebooks.
Kickass notebook at a kickass price!!!

Acer AS5740-5513 15.6-Inch Laptop (Blue) Review

Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)First off, I just want to say that unless you actually OWN a product, you should not rate it. Period. The purpose of a review is to critique the item itself - not the accuracy of Amazon's product listing. The previous 1-star reviewer obviously does not understand this, so please IGNORE their rating, because this laptop really is a gemstone (pun intended).
I'll start with the downsides of the laptop. For one thing, I wish it had Firewire. That is the one key port that I really miss on this machine. eSATA would be nice, too, but for the price, I can live without it. Also, the battery life could be better. I haven't used the machine enough to give you a precise figure, but I'd say the battery lasts between 2 and 3.5 hrs depending on what I'm doing. Not terrible, but not great either - Dell's competing i3 model has almost double the wHr capacity. Cosmetically, the laptop is a little dated looking. It is made of fingerprint-attracting glossy plastic, and the lid has rounded edges, which are not exactly in style. Then again, I personally care more about the laptop's functionality and build quality than its aesthetics. Here's where the good stuff comes into play: there is a little bit of flex here and there, but on the whole, the machine feels pretty solid. I'm not terrified of breaking it by setting down on the table to quickly. What I really like about the laptop is its abundance of features and LOW price tag. The Core i3 CPU is pretty darn fast for most applications, and the 4GB of memory (which is DDR3, by the way) is plenty for me. It's nice to have bluetooth built in, and I'm glad they didn't skimp on the USB ports, either. The keyboard and mouse are both pretty decent. The integrated Intel graphics (which are actually built onto the i3 CPU die) are definitely NOT for intense gaming (sorry buddy, no Crysis), but they actually are fine for casual games and some older shooters. The GMA HD on the i3 proc is quite a bit faster than the last-gen 4500MHD, and it is roughly the same performance-wise as an nVidia 9300m GS. It runs FEAR smoothly on low settings, Half-Life 2 on max, and handles WOW just fine on medium. Obviously, simple games like Bejeweled and Zuma run perfectly, too.
So far, I think you'd be hard-pressed to find a laptop this good for this price. I bought mine for $550, and I couldn't be happier. Then again, I haven't owned the laptop for very long, so I may still discover some major flaw. If so, I'll update my review. Otherwise, I highly recommend this laptop to everybody!

Acer AS5740-6025 15.6-Inch Laptop (Blue) Review

Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)I was amazed at how easy it was to set up my new computer. This Acer was great right out of the box. Between it and the Windows 7 it was so easy. I turned it on and was walked through everything step by step. All the updates to the installed software went quickly and smoothly. But was was the best was when I went to hook up my 4 year old Samsung 19" external CRT,3 Year old Microsoft external Keyboard, and 3 year old Logitech mouse. It all worked plug and play. Found all the drivers and installed with me doing anything but plugging it in. Same thing with my 2 year old Cannon printer. I am giving the names of each just to elaborate that they we not Acer products or new products. Then I downloaded the Windows 7 upgrade adviser and ran it. This software told me what units I had plugged in that needed to have driver updates done to work correctly with Windows 7. The only one was the printer as the others were done automatically when I plugged in the USB cables. Now back to the computer. I love it. The keyboard is great and mouse pad (almost don't feel like I need the external stuff like I did with my previous laptops). The camera (Crystal eye) is as good as my Logitech external camera and even has wide angle. The microphone quality is good too. The dolby home theatre is better than anything I have ever had on other Laptops but I still prefer the external speakers. The I5 Dual Core speed is tremendous and all my programs open and close very quickly. I have only had this for two weeks but have enjoyed it every day. And I gotta say after having XP Pro, the Vista Ultimate (which I did not like but struggled through) I really so far am very impressed with Windows 7.

ASUS K52 Series K52JR-X2 15.6-Inch Laptop (Dark Brown) Review

Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)I had been researching laptops for more than a year before I bought this one. After buying my son an ASUS UL50VT for Christmas after extensive research, I was hooked on ASUS. Good reviews, nice design, good performance. My laptop needs are viewing movies and shows, heavy surfing, downloading and burning, playing music, and light gaming. This is perfect for my needs.
The first thing I noticed about this one is the keyboard; it is a 'chiclet design' with wider caps which make it extremely comfortable for typing. A lot less errors on my part. The ELAN touchpad (smartpad) is super. For the last year, I have borrowed a friend's ACER and his touchpad drives me crazy. It zooms, the cursor moves and jumps about all the time, frustrating me to no end; I finally had to disable it completely. With this computer, palm detection notes the difference between the palm and a finger so that the cursor doesn't jump around while typing. You can also do pinch and zoom. The large palm rest area is supercomfortable as well and minimizes smudges, unlike the rubbery type ones you see which I hate.
I like the Power4Gear which allows you to select your desired processor mode to conserve battery life and have fan power adjusted. Very handy. The Intel I3 Core is more than enough for my needs, lightening fast, and the NVIDEA GEFORCE 310M graphics is excellent for the light gaming that I do.
The sunken hinges enhance viewing by providing a wider more comfortable and less distracting viewing experience, as well as making the laptop look much more visually appealing and sleek. The sound is great (SRS with ALTEC lansing speakers) for media and music. The computer is really sleek and cool looking and my son prefers it to the design of his.
The first thing that I didn't like is the screen brightness; unless I have it on full brightness, I can't see it. It seems to be dimmer than others I have used, even on full brightness, but maybe it's my imagination? I had it side by side my friend's ACER, with the annoying touchpad, and my son's ASUS UL50VT and both of their screens appeared brighter.
My major disappointment is the battery life, despite a little sticker on the computer that states 'great battery power' or something like that. With screen brightness mid range and just using it for moderate surfing and office applications, the battery only lasts two hours. I had expected more. Another annoying thing is the frequent disappearance of the power icon in the taskbar; the setting to turn it on in the taskbar is greyed out. After googling some forums, I followed the recommendation, logged off and back on. Bingo, the power icon was back. But since the battery life is a disappointment, I don't want to be fiddling around trying to see the power icon to have notice of when it will die.
Conclusion: excellent value. Biggest PRO: other than the speed of I3 (and it is really really fast), it would be the touchpad and keyboard. Biggest CON: battery life.

ASUS U41JF-A1 14-Inch Laptop (Silver) Review

Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)Update 3/4: Still loving this laptop, very fast and the battery life is amazing. Just found out that this laptop is the PC Magazines Editors Choice for Mainstream laptops, beating out the HP Envy and Macbook Pro! That should attest to how great this laptop is.
Update 2/23: After doing some research I found out that this indeed does have Turbo Boost, but it's not as easily accessed by the end user, it's now in the BIOS instead of a software option. It is auto enabled when you switch to High Performance or Entertainment mode which boosts your CPU to 2.9GHz vs 2.53GHz (Verified with CPU-Z)
I also had a little trouble with some of my older games running in FAST FORWARD, as in cut scenes were going super fast, units moved way to quickly, etc... All you need to do is update your Nvidia drivers and those issues are sorted out.
The new Webcam (compared to the older UL series) now works with Skype and looks much, much better.
Original Review:
I have been using the laptop for about 4 days, Amazon unfortunately did not have the best price so I purchased from a different retailer but felt that I would provide my experience here.
I had been using a UL Series laptop for around a year and a half and when I discovered the U Series coming out soon I felt that it was time to upgrade, to say the least I am very happy that I did.
Build quality:
It's great for the price range this laptop is in. Minimal plastic/glossy surfaces, and the Aluminum shell is very nice and doesn't gather fingerprints nearly as much as glossy surfaces do. Palm rests are solid and look great (brushes aluminum look) and the Left and Right click buttons feel solid.
Improvement over the UL Series:
The biggest gripes I had with the UL Series laptops were the very bad viewing angles for the screen, the horrible dimpled track pad/clicking buttons, and the 80% glossy surface that picked up fingerprints extremely quickly. This new U series addresses all of those problems. The screen is much, MUCH better than my old UL laptop (UL50VT), and the viewing angles are fantastic. The new smooth track pad is much easier to use, and the clicking buttons are much easier to press and are a little bit quieter. Most of the glossy surfaces have been replace with "brushed aluminum" looking plastic that don't show fingerprints at all. Another issue I had was the graphics switching seemed clunky on the UL Series and this new U series switches graphics much smoother/faster. The webcam also works a lot better. The laptop is a bit lighter.
The keyboard has no flex when typing normally, but if you press down on it hard you can see a flex happen. I don't see a situation when you would need to press on the keys that hard but I guess this is an issue for some so I wanted to point that out.
Performance:
The dual core i3 is very fast and runs programs great, standard 4GB of ram is perfect for this laptop, and the built in graphics handle normal tasks and HD video fine. The discreet GeForce GT 425M handles games fantastically. As pointed out before, it runs Dead Space 2 (which is fairly graphics intensive) very, very well even on Ultra settings. The normal hard drive works fine, about 35 seconds to boot and once Windows is fully loaded (about 20 seconds) programs open very fast. I installed a SSD on day 2 and now the laptop boots in ~10 seconds, and Windows is fully loaded instantly. The laptop is extremely fast with either an HDD or SSD. The speakers sound great for a laptop.
Battery Life:
Using Power Saving mode with the screen adjusted to 90%, I get around 7.5-8 hours of battery life with the normal HDD. 8-9 with an SSD. In high performance with advanced graphics turned on and screen adjusted to 100%, I get around 4.5 hours of battery life. 5 hours with an SSD.
Some notable cons:
Battery life isn't as good as my UL laptop which gets around 9 hours in battery saving mode with 90% screen brightness. (normal HDD)
---> My UL Laptop came with "Turbo Boost" which overclocked the processor by 30%. This laptop doesn't include that feature. The i3 works fine though at the stock clock rating.

Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)so my relationship begins with this computer, im primarily using this as a writers notebook, and a decent keyboard was very important to me so when i saw this at j and r in new york i was very impressed and here i am with this black beauty. now i havent tried any games on it so far but i love the crunchy response it gives to me as i type. the display is also great for print and movies along with pictures of course. this laptop does have a horrendous battery life, and a power cable a must when you travel with it. aside from that the laptop is easy to use and seems to have it all, with a decent hard drive, a good processor, and great ergonomics. this is a general laptop and not to used a specialist in anything. its a great all in one and with easy games, decent productivity, and good sony support make it a great workhorse for day to day life. for me as a writer, the keyboard is amazing and so is the mouse as i can really get tethered with this mousepad. the only very annoying thing about this computer is that the power switch is on the right side of the laptop where i seem to be always holding it from and i keep turning the computer on and off. i have spent almost a 1000 dollars on this comp and its well worth it. it seems to be doing whatever it promised and the i3 core i havent tested so far. im getting a few games to let this do some processor crunching. lets see how that goes. meanwhile so far no regrets, the microsoft bundling with office and recovery disk built in is a futuristic step and i am proud of Microsoft and Sony for this giant technological step.
so for all you out there, this will do as it says and it looks great with its gunmetal black and beautifully designed buttons and layout. the green power switch is a kicker except for where it is placed. the black color is sedate enough for me, yet gives it a very classy industrial look. for a medium grade multimedia laptop look no further. and i found the build to be quite solid and well done, better than ASUS who are not so painstaking i feel in their construction. anyways full marks to a reasonably priced laptop. i am quite happy to have this baby in my arms!

Acer AS5745G-7671 15.6-Inch Laptop - Black Review

Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)This is my first time writing a review.
GOOD:
Can play COD:MW2, TF2 in high setting :)
For first time , I actually liked the build quality of this Acer.
Its light weight :O
BAD: I wish it had i5,blu-ray
UGLY: Nothin till now :)
THOUGHTS :-
Intially I was planning to buy another Acer with nvidia GT330M(GT 420M is quite similar in performance )which was 100 buck less with same config.
Why I prefer to take this one ?
- OPTIMUS, this technology is awesome , battery showed me around 4-5hrs
- GT420M , which means DX11 :) (Its a CLASS 2 GFX)
- Dolby digital
- Extra HDD and RAM
BUT:-
I can easily feel hot air(mild) coming from vent within 3-4min of gameplay.I suggest to use laptop cooling pad.
FINALLY:-
Its a great product and very stable. I think it will have a price reduction and that will piss me off since I am the 1st customer at amazon...lol.
I am no brand-conscious guy , I wanna play game this was the cheapest available when I bought it , I GOT IT !

Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)I ordered this laptop on 5/25, after reading good reviews on Newegg and CNet. I received it on 5/26 (One Day Shipping through Amazon Prime). My initial impressions were that, although the exterior leaves something to be desired (it's very plain and functional-looking), the computer seems very sturdy and well-built. The keyboard is full sized and easy to type on. The touchpad is a nice size, although to left/right click, you have to apply a good amount of pressure, which takes some getting used to. The screen quality is good, although it's very shiny, so you have to have it at the right angle or else it's reflects way too much light.
I had a problem at first with the computer freezing on startup, which was a little frustrating. However, once I uninstalled McAfee and other bloatware, the problem was resolved. I recommend getting rid of these programs before attempting to download other programs. Without them, it runs like a dream.
It's a little on the heavy side, due to its large size. However, compared to other laptops this size, it's a reasonable weight. It'd only be a problem if you had to haul it around all day, but it would be comfortable to carry to or from class or work. The large screen would be perfect for watching movies or streamed video, although the speakers sound a little bit tinny.
Overall, I am very pleased with this laptop. I use it mainly for watching movies, surfing the internet, and writing papers, but I think it'd be able to handle more intense activities, like gaming. Spec-wise, it's comparable to machines that cost twice as much. The built-in webcam and HD components are a nice touch. I think it'd be perfect for the first-time college student or home user, even if it doesn't look as slick as other computers.
I'd give it 5 stars if it wasn't for the freezing issue. That's more of a problem with Windows than a problem with the laptop itself, though.

Acer Aspire TimelineX AS4820T-5570 14-Inch HD Display Laptop (Black Brushed Aluminum) Review

Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)First, I would just like to compliment Acer on this masterpiece. I say masterpiece in the sense that it is perfect for what I do, which is a lot of excel, downloading files, surfing the internet, checking email, etc. No gaming whatsoever except for a game of solitaire here and there. The build quality is excellent. Having read plenty of reviews about its build quality, I would just like to point out that the professionals reviewing it put it through strenuous tests that if, you use it as it should be used, you will never encounter problems or inconveniences they speak of. This machine is lightning fast with its Intel i3 processor and 4 GB of RAM. It doesn't slow up when I have 6 programs running at the same time either, which is key for me, as it is for many people. One aspect that I love is how light the computer is. It isn't incredibly light, but by no means is it heavy. I expect to have no problems when I put it in my backpack and ride my bike to school. It's that light. The screen is crystal clear, and I have had absolutely no problems viewing text, as some reviews claim. Also, the viewing angles are pretty good, although not stellar, but lets be honest, who views their laptops with it completely opened? No one. So don't worry about viewing angles being a problem if that is your concern. The one downside, if you can even call it a downside, is the battery life. Acer claims 8 hours, although I have only been able to get about 6 out of it. Plenty long enough for me, and if you manage your power settings and brightness correctly, it should be plenty for just about anyone. The black brushed aluminum is very sleek and proves to be a favorite for those who are tech-savvy, and want a sophisticated looking machine(like myself). The price is pretty reasonable for what you get with this laptop-not too many better buys out there. Overall, this is a great computer, and Acer has really outdone themselves. I would definitely recommend this product to anyone who is in need of a computer for the uses that I have talked about previously.

Asus Intel Core i3 Laptop K52F-BBR9 Notebook Computer Review

Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)Good overall laptop. I3 processor is very fast for an entry level machine. Video and Sound are typical of most laptops in this price range. Intel HD graphics are just OK for basic use...I am not a gamer. Have no problems or regrets other than the amount of bloatware that Asus includes. Very happy. Big step up from the similar entry level offerings from Toshiba, Gateway, Acer, etc... This is about as good as you will find at the sub $600 price range.

Toshiba Satellite A505-S6004 TruBrite 16.0-Inch Laptop (Black/Silver) Review

Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)Great things about the Satelite:
+ 16" wide screen display - it's beautiful
+ Fast, starts up in a couple of seconds and no waiting on your apps
+ Huge 500GB hard drive.
+ Windows 7, I wasn't expecting much, but no problems, runs without issues
+ Microsoft Office, installed, free for 60 days
+ Huge high quality speakers, this machine is music and movie ready.
+ Attractive
+ A little heavy but not bad for its size.
+ Toshiba is very reliable
+ Motion detector locks the hard drive in place when it detects the laptop is being jostled around.
Could be better:
> Light above track pad too bright
> Keys are LOUD
> Norton installed and bugs you about paying every time you log on
Overall, this is a great laptop. SOme of the display lights are a little bright and the keypad is noisy. I can forgive that though because this laptop is so fast. I'm never waiting anymore. Windows 7 is proving to be very reliable and easy to use.
Initially, the touch pad was "helping" me and this was really annoying. To turn off some of the trackpad features that do things for you: Go to Control Panel > Hardware and Sound, under the Devices and Printers section click on Mouse. Another dialog pops up, CLick on the Device Settings tab, then on the Settings button. From there you can set up the touch pad the way you want it.
I upgraded my laptop to a 12 cell battery and that battery lasts about 7 or 8 hours. If you can afford the extra battery, it's worth it. THe 12 cell does take about 2 hours to charge though.
My friends who work in computer repair say they get less Toshibas in the shop than any other brand and highly recommend them.
Buy a large laptop case to carry it in. It will not fit in a standard size case.
Norton is slow and a pain, I uninstalled it and installed Vipre.

HP Pavilion DV4-2160US 14.1-Inch Laptop (Digital Plaid) Review

Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)I looked for like a month before I bought this laptop (not sure what the difference is from the laptop on this page other than the color scheme).
Pros:
14" screen.
It has an impressive amount of features, including the intel i5-430 processor. I've had it less than a week, so we'll see how it holds up.
Fast
No problems with stuck-on pixels.
Nice keyboard. The DV4 has a full sized keyboard with full sized arrow keys. It actually has LEDs next to the Caps Lock and Num Lock keys. The num lock feature almost made me re-install the OS because I didn't realize it was on, and I couldn't log in. I had just used the windows easy transfer, and rebooted, and I was unable to log in. Lessons learned here: make sure you make a password reset disk, and make sure you make a second account just in case your first one gets locked out for some reason. Also burn your DVDs for system restore.
LED backlight for battery conservation.
Looks cool. The volume control and WiFi on/off switch above the keyboard are more of a proximity sensor, and are cool.
Comes with windows 7 home premium.
Wireless works well.

Cons:
The far right corner is dim, about a square centimeter area right in the corner. If I move my head to look directly at it, it's not very dim. You might not even notice unless you move the task bar like I do.
The screen is glossy. All laptops have glossy screens except for a few Dell business laptops. HP might have one too that you can special order.
The hard drive is a little noisy (but I believe any noise is too much), and a little warm. The fan spins constantly, but you can turn it off in the BIOS (it still cycles when it needs to).
Other:
The touchpad seems like it has a lot of friction at first, but it got better, and if I use the tip of my finger with light pressure it glides just fine. The touchpad screen scroll feature works well. Has a button to turn off the touchpad if you don't want to use it.

Gateway NV55C29u 15.6-Inch Laptop (Satin Black) Review

Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)The laptop is good I purchased a black one and this red unit. I needed a good laptop at an excellent price and these fit the bill. The processor is adequate, not as fast as some of the laptops that I have owned, but it has yet to stall out on anything. It seems to take some time to launch programs when Windows is first loaded, this is probably due to a smaller cache on the processor. Once Windows has fully loaded this computer has handled every task that I have thrown at it so far. The battery life is over 3 hours almost every time that I have used it on battery power. When I watched a movie it seemed more like around 2.5 hours, but then again I didn't have a stop watch going. The Blu-ray player is a huge bonus, I haven't watched any blu-ray movies besides the bundled feature disc, but I have used the HDMI to hook the laptop up to our TV and it worked great.
I was afraid that the red laptop would be an unattractive computer, but it is not. It's more of a burgundy than a red, as a matter of fact it matches perfectly with my wife's LG enV3 cellular phone.
The plastic case feels cheap. I'm not sure if this is because of the fake wood grain pattern on the unit or the actual material used, but this laptop is one of the lightest full sized laptops that I have owned. (Probably because of the plastic type) One of my favorite laptop quality test is to grab it with one hand by the corner with the screen open to see if it is rugged enough not to flex. I owned one lightweight laptop in the past that flexed/bent and made a cracking sound every time that I held it with one hand. This one is sturdy.
The laptop came with the new free version of MS Office, that is feature limited and supported by ads. I took this version off, but I can see it's merits if I didn't already have a full version of the MS Office.
My only complaints is that the keyboard has some keys re-arranged. The , , , keys are all located on the arrow keys and require a function key press to work. The other problem would be the lack of a Caps Lock, Num Lock and Scroll lock LED. An icon shows up momentarily on the screen when the button is press displaying the status. This means that the user either has to remember the state of each key, type the text and hope that it is in the right case or tap the key to see the status instead of just glancing over at the lights near the keyboard.
