Brother HL-5250DN Refurbished Network Ready Laser Printer with Duplex Review

Brother HL-5250DN Refurbished Network Ready Laser Printer with Duplex
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought the Brother HL-5250DN printer from Amazon for five reasons:
1) fast monochrome (black and white) printer.
2) network capability.
3) automatic duplexing (printing on both sides of the paper).
4) Enclosed paper tray.
5) Price (and the one-year manufacturer's warranty is nice, even on the refurbished product).
I also like the low toner, paper, and drum replacement indicator lights on the printer. The cost of the toner cartridges is about the same with other printers I've seen.
What comes in the box:
Printer, drum and toner assembly, AC power cord, paper Quick Setup Guide, CD-ROM. The CD-ROM has the drivers, entire Owner's Manual, and animated installation guide.
Note: No cables are provided.
If you are going to connect the printer to a wireless router, you will need an Ethernet cable.
If you are going to connect the printer directly to one computer, you will need either a USB or parallel cable. The printer has connections for both.
Setup
The setup did not go as easily as I hoped.
I had two problems with installation and setup:
1) I was not sure which network to use (peer to peer or shared).
2) After installation, I could not print from one of the two computers on the network.
After easily removing some shipping adhesive tape, inserting the drum/toner assembly (looks like a full toner cartridge, not a starter cartridge) and paper tray, I was ready to proceed with installing the software drivers.
The Quick Setup Guide presents you with choices for Windows 98/Me/2000/XP: USB interface, parallel interface, and network interface. There are also choices if using Windows XP Professional x64 Edition and Macintosh. The manufacturer's website indicates Microsoft Vista has "built-in" drivers but Brother drivers are also available on the website.
Upon clicking "Install Printer Driver" from CD-ROM menu, I was presented with three choices: USB cable users, Parallel cable users, and Network cable users. I chose the network cable users since I wanted to add the printer to my wireless network router. I was presented with a license agreement that I accepted. I then had to choose between "Brother Peer-to-Peer Network Printer" or "Network Shared Printer". I chose peer-to-peer to print directly to the printer over the network rather than to a central server on a shared printer. On Step 8 I had to choose "LPR" or "NetBios". I had no idea which one to choose and I didn't find any useful information to help with the decision. I chose LPR and clicked Next. The printer was recognized. Make sure to write down the IP Node Address (for a wireless router it is something like 192.xxx.xx.x).
Now, I needed to access the printer from my wireless computer running Microsoft Vista. I went to the Control Panel and double clicked on Printers. I then chose "Add a Printer" and selected "Add a network, wireless or Bluetooth printer". The computer searched for and found the printer. A couple more clicks and I was successfully printing from the wireless computer.
Printing from the desktop computer running Windows XP, connected to the router with an Ethernet cable, would not be as simple. The computer recognized the printer but would not send any data to the printer. I went to Control Panel, Printer and Faxes, right clicked on Properties. The General tab did not have the Location of the printer. I added 192.xxx.xx.x and clicked OK and tried printing a document but I was not successful. After two hours of dealing with it and looking at the company's website, I called the company (toll-free phone number right on the box). The company was closed; I called the next morning just after the company opened at 9 a.m. Eastern. I went through a very brief voice prompt menu and I was connected to Robby in all of about two minutes. He was polite but he was not able to solve my problem. He told me second level support would call me within 24 hours. Just over two hours later I got a call from Debbie, who was in Memphis, Tennessee. She was very helpful and quickly identified the problem. When hovering over the printer icon in the Printer and Faxes folder, the little popup message indicated the printer was offline. I don't know how I missed that. To correct the problem all I had to do was right click the printer and select "Use Printer Online". After a few seconds the printer was in Ready status. Problem resolved.
Summary
This is my first Brother printer and I am very favorably impressed. I don't think there is another printer on the market with these features at such a low price, at least at the time of this writing.
The product is shipped in the manufacturer's box, not an Amazon box, so all your neighbors will know what's in the box on your doorstep. The box looks like the box for a new printer, listing many features of the printer but it is clearly marked "Factory Refurbished". The printer itself has a sticker on the back with "Re-manufactured Product". My printer was originally manufactured in September 2005. I bought it in May 2007.
My experience with Brother International has been very positive. I got a great printer with excellent features, a full-size toner cartridge TN-550 (not a starter toner cartridge!), and a one-year warranty. From idle/sleep, the first page took only 20 seconds to print and the text quality is great. The icing on the cake was the technical support provided by Americans. Their promptness and knowledge was impressive. This was easily the best technical support experience I have ever had!Update December 4, 2007:
I am still very pleased with the printer but it is noisy when printing and it does make "tick, tick, tick" noises sometimes. Neither of these issues has effected performance. The only annoyance I've experienced is with envelope printing - the envelope always crinkles. This isn't a big deal for me but it is something to consider if envelope printing is important to you.
Update October 7, 2008:
I purchased another refurbished HL-5250. The toner and drum are also factory refurbished. The drum unit (DR-520) has life expectancy of 22,500 pages, about 90% of new. The toner cartridge (TN-550) has an expected yield of 3,150 pages at 5% coverage. A new toner cartridge has an expected yield of 3,500 pages.

HP Flat out makes the best printers. The last printer that we had was a 5m and it lasted 8 years and was connected to a workgroup of 20+ people. We never had a problem. I just wanted to upgrade to get the increased printing speeds. You will not go wrong with this printer. We already have printed 250K+ pages without a hitch. It is also the easiest printer to attach to an existing network. At this point, I don't even bother looking at other manufacturers.

I have owned this printer for several months. It is fast, the print quality is excellent, and I am especially pleased by how accurately it prints fine lines in line art.
However, the facilities for printing envelopes (the "smart" tray) are inferior. It only holds about 15 envelopes without jamming. If you want to print several hundred for a mass mailing, you have to sit and constantly feed the smart tray, and unjam it frequently.
The other problem is the sensor for replacing the toner cartridge. You are told your cartridge is low for weeks before it actually is, even if you run a home business where you use the printer heavily. And, you are not permitted to decide when to replace the cartridge. While the copies are still perfect, and there are no streaks or faint spots anywhere, the "replace cartridge" red light comes on and the printer will not print one single more page till you put in a new cartridge. Forget about running the printer a little faint for awhile, or shaking up the cartridge to get another hundred decent pages before you put in a new one. As cartridges are expensive, and there is no indication how much toner is really left in the cartridge you are forced to throw away, this is an expensive "feature."

We were looking for a printer that can print our postcards, A friend who is also printing postcards suggested an Okidata C9650. When I did my research, I found out that the C9650 is a color printer that cost $3,000.00! Since I did not want to spend that much and we did not think we need a color printer, I contacted Okidata and based on my specifications, they recommended the B6500N. I shopped around and the lowest price I was able to get was $900.00. I then called a computer/printer expert from our Chamber of Commerce who then informed me that this printer was on sale at Amazon for $575.00. I went online and bought it. The following day it was delivered! That was fast! After some initial problems with the set up, Okidata support was able to configure the printer to fit our needs. We are quite happy with the printer and the support that comes with it. If you need a work horse network printer for a small to medium office, you can't go wrong with this printer. That is if you can still get it for $575.00.

HP LaserJet 4250 Monochrome Printer Review

HP LaserJet 4250 Monochrome Printer

This printer has a great price, good specs, and fast printing. However, it does have some issues that hopefully HP will work-out.
The firmware seems pretty buggy. We've had several different problems with the printer crashing. Every couple days or so we get a "Service Error" message on the screen and the printer has to be rebooted. Also, I tried printing a large (1000 page) pdf on it and it would just freeze after printing around 140 pages. It froze twice on the exact same number of pages. I had to break it up into print jobs of 100 pages each. We've also seen where it gets in an infinite cycle where it says, "Processing Job" and the data light blinks, but nothing ever comes out. Again, it requires a reboot. We upgraded the firmware, but the problems didn't go away.
FYI, a parallel port doesn't seem to deliver data fast enough to this printer! It consumes data faster than the port can send it.We could only achieve the 45ppm when we hooked it up to the USB 2.0 port. Not sure about the performance when using HP JetDirect internal print server.

Lexmark E460DN Monochrome Laser Printer Review

Lexmark E460DN Monochrome Laser Printer

Well, after owning a Hp laserjet 4P for many, many years, I decided it was time to upgrade. Besides, I out grew that printer and wanted to move up get a duplex/network printer. I looked at all major printers for months. It finally came down to Hp and Lexmark. I've have problems with Hp's non support of drivers for Vista®, drivers. Technical support is also an issue and their quality just isn't there anymore. A company I once worked for had many Lexmark printers that stayed on 24-7 for years. They really had little problems. The research that I did indicated that Lexmark's quality and support is excellent so I chose the Lexmark E460DN.
The printer arrived via UPS® as expected. I unpacked the printer but allowed it to sit and stabilize for a couple of hours (this is always a good idea with electronic equipment) before applying power. After setup & configuration, I began to run it through its paces. One of the first jobs I ran was a manual script with 375 pages, printing both sides. The job was completed in minutes with with excellent quality. What a work horse!
The print is fast, quiet easy to use and logical, with menus easy to follow. It is well made and management can be performed from the front panel or via web access. I used both, mostly the web. Duplex worked great also. I am very please at my choice. This printer is excellent for individual and group printing. Lexmark quality is built in.

Lexmark E360DN Monochrome Laser Printer Review

Lexmark E360DN Monochrome Laser Printer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Ok first off I got this printer in just over two days and I chose free shipping option. I don't know what Amazon.com did to get this printer here so fast. This printer must have come to me on Murcury's wings. This Lexmark E360DN printer was delivered so fast it blew my old gray werewolf hair back.
My species of werewolf is obssesive compulsive so when the printer arrived I took it out of its Amazon.com box. Next I took the actual printer out of its inner Lexmark box. I sat the printer on its shelf in my home. I peeled off the packing tape used to hold printer componants in place during shipment. I freed the printer cartridge from its packaing materials and properly reinserted it into its internal bay. I connected one end of a USB cable I had to supply to the printer with the other USB cable end connecting to my new Dell computer running Windows 7. I connected one end of the power cable to the printer and the other into my surge protector. I turned the printer on the little green LCD screen lit up asking me a few questions as it did its diagnostic self test. It passed its wake up test and went silent. I loaded the drivers onto my Windows 7 operating system by selecting the run setup.exe option. I followed the easy to understand prompts and selected the appropriate options for my model Lexmark E360DN printer.
In no time at all not more than 3 minutes the driver was fully and correctly installed and my lexmark printer was there ready and waiting to be used. All I had to do was remember to remove my old printer driver and make my new Lexmark E360DN printer my default. Once I made my new lexmark E360DN printer my new default I printed something. I was amazed at how good the print looked. Even in economy mode the prints were first rate. The speed from warm up to first print after selecting print option is less than 20 seconds. The standard paper tray could be bigger so I took a star off for that but thats a little thing. So you will get up more often changing paper big deal. You can work this printer like a wild man and I should know because I am a wild man. This printer finishes all jobs quickly and will be sitting there eagerly waiting for your next printing challenge.
Now I must confess I work everyday as a computer geek with printers of all kinds including Lexmark but never this model E360DN. I don't install printers for a living but I install and test printers of all kinds often as part of my job. However this printer is one of the easiest to set up I have ever encountered. Another well known printer company makes installing its printers about as easy as force feeding baby pigeons full grown elephants through an eye dropper!
I don't use my printer for envelope processing so I don't know how this printer stacks up in that area. So if you just need a hard working basic printer that loves to work and work and work here is your home or office Lexmark E360DN printing solution. Finally in the all important area of cost Amazon's hidden price whipped the snot out of the official Lexmark home site price for this exact same printer and its toner so buy them from Amazon.com unless you have money to burn!

I have a Canon MF 5550 which is great except that it is hard to use it sheet feed anything other than standard paper (e.g. envelopes) and was not Windows 7 compatible. What I really needed was a double-sided printer that could also print envelopes and card stock and that would be Window 7 compatible. This printer really fits the bill and is fairly quick. It also goes into sleep mode to save electricity. There are three sizes of toner cartridge to allow you to match them to your cost and consumption needs. Mine came with two paper trays which hold 250 sheets each and a multi purpose tray for your envelopes and other manual sheet feeding needs (label sheets, cardstock, etc.) I load one tray up with "good" paper, one tray with draft paper and I'm good to go. Toner capacity is much larger than my Canon so I expect I won't have to change it as much--so far I am still using the original toner cartridge that came with it.
Reviews I read said the print quaility of the Lexmark E462DTN was not very good for high resolution printing but I found it fine for general office work. I had looked into a color lazer printer but found the cost of toner was very expensive. Found it better to get the best tool for each job. The Lexmark is my main office printer; I use a cheaper color inkjet printer with duplex printing for photos and color documents. This combination seems to work for my needs.
The Lexmark footprint is same size as my multifunction so I had to move the Canon multifunction to another room but I still have the capacity to make photocopies, scans and send and receive faxes. I bought some metal shelving from the hardware store to stack the Lexmark over the color inkjet printer to minimize space.
I have a home office and am not very tech savvy but the printer was fairly easy to set up and have it working with Windows 7 and XP. I printed out the fairly thick operating manual and have it nearby; it is easy to follow and figure things out. There is a door on the side of the Lexmark where you can add memory, I think. Not that I will ever use it but there seem to be a lot more options on this higher end printer than my old Canon multifunction.
I am very happy with this printer.

This printer is excellent! Fast (even with duplexing), energy efficient, and sleek in design. LED technology is similar to Laser technology but more energy efficient (meaning less heat and curling) and less moveable parts which means longer lasting. And Oki is the innovator in this area. I was so tired of replacing color cartridges on my HP inkjet when all I do is print B/W for the most part. The B411 also seems extremely well built. Overall I am very pleased!

HP LaserJet P2055dn Printer Monochrome Review

HP LaserJet P2055dn Printer Monochrome
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Update: If your printer hangs on some print jobs, as mine did, go to the HP website and download the March 2010 version of the firmware (or a more recent version if available). The new firmware seems to have solved this problem. Also, it's now possible to buy 3rd party, refilled cartridges. On two occasions, I have bought the cheapest cartridge I could find on the Internet, and both have worked fine, with quality indistinguishable from HP's expensive cartridges. Finally, since I never print graphics, my comments apply to text-only printing.
When I switched to a new computer running Vista x64, I was forced to replace my HP Laserjet 5P because HP failed to provide a driver that worked competently with the 64-bit operating system. Based on the second comment to this review, HP apparently subsequently fixed the nonfunctional 5P x64 driver after Vista had been out for more than a year.
I chose the P2055dn because of auto-duplexing and the standard 128MB of RAM. I was initially disappointed by the poor print quality and noise of the printer with the factory default settings. After digging into the clunky, digital-only manual and much trial and error, I created new HP Printing Shortcuts for 1-sided and 2-sided documents with ProRes quality instead of the default FastRes quality, and I set the default Printing Shortcut to be my new 1-sided definition.
I also set the printer to Quiet Mode. To set the Quiet Mode, press the down arrow on the printer several times until you reach System Setup. Push the OK button, then toggle down to Quiet Mode with the down arrow. Press OK, then use the down arrow to toggle the Quiet Mode On, press OK, and press the carriage return key to go back to Ready.
After these changes, the printer runs slower, but the print quality is excellent and the noise level is similar to that of the 5P. I also turned off the aggravating low toner reminders that are worse than spam email.

Brother HL-5370DWT Laser Printer with Wireless Networking, Duplex and Dual Paper Trays Review

Brother HL-5370DWT Laser Printer with Wireless Networking, Duplex and Dual Paper Trays

I've been using HP stuff since the first scientific calculator, the HP-32, that came out in 1973. It used to be rock solid, designed by engineers to be used by engineers. Sadly, it's now cheap junk. The scanners in HP's all-in-one's seemed designed to fail in the thirteenth month after purchase.
Some of HP's recent printers do not even implement their own Printer Control Language properly (HP PCL).
This Brother printer works. It implements PCL5 correctly, as well as its emulation of PostScript. I've networked computers for fifteen years, so setup went very easily. The hardest part was hauling the CD-ROM to the various computers on the network, since Windows did not have the driver built in. A no-brainer.
The supplies work out to 1.4 cents a page (toner and drum). Hard to beat that.

Brother HL-6050DN Network Laser Printer Review

This is the best Med-size Laser printer in the market. I was a big Hp fan. I own a small business and had the opportunity to try almost all med-size laser printers out there. This is by far the best printer ever. The quality o the product is amazing and the built is wonderful. I set it up in less than 10 minutes and was connected to the network in less than 15 min. The toner life is amazing and the speed is ipressive. This is by far the best med-size laser printer I've seen. Do not buy HP anymore. They lost their edge with bad quality printers released lately.

Buy the P2055 instead of the P2035. it costs a little extra but it's worth it. The P2055 will take the high yield cartridge. The P2035 will not. You could save hundreds of dollars over the life of this machine using the high yield cartridge.. Plus, it is fast, quiet, and the first page comes out fast.
