(More customer reviews)As a radiologist/nuclear medicine physician working very long hours in front of a computer PACS system I have tried many, many keyboards including all types of Saitek, Logitech, Razor, and Microsoft. This is by far, the best ILLUMINATED keyboard I have ever used. Nothing even comes close. The keyboard is very strong and extremely well built. The back lighting is superb in dark working conditions. So, unless you conscientiously plan to to kill this keyboard, it should last you a lifetime with normal everyday use, like the company claims.

(More customer reviews)The Realforce 103U is one of the keyboards that uses the famous topre capacitive mechanical switch to register keystrokes. This switch uses a change in the capacitance (amount of space between the contacts) of the keys to register keystrokes instead of using direct contact between the key and the circuit board. Because the keystrokes are made without direct physical coupling of parts, the keyboard lasts much longer than its counterparts. Because the topre capacitive switch rarely fails, this keyboard is often used in places that require high reliability like airports, factories, etc. The topre switch is one of the most sought after mechanical switch for this reason.
The keyboard itself is really a typists keyboard. It has a variable keyweighting, meaning that the amount of force required to push a key varies based on which finger is pressing the key when touch typing. For instance, the keys that are pressed by the pinky finger take less force to push donwn than the keys that are pressed by the index finger. This may sound off-putting, but in practice it makes the keyboard very comfortable for extended typing sessions. The way the keys respond to typing is amazing. This is the most comfortable keyboard I own. The Realforce also has a very heavy duty construction, with each switch mounted on to a metal plate. The keyboard is heavy, and will resist being pushed around on your desk.
The keyboard is very straight-forward. It does not have any bells and whistles. What other keyboards have in flashiness the Realforce has in classiness. It may seem expensive, but keep in mind this is an industrial quality device that is not normally available at retail in the U.S. Most of the time this keyboard is actually imported from Japan and then sold in the U.S. That makes the board pricey, but it is certainly more than worth it as this may very well be the last keyboard you will ever need.
I have not regretted purchasing this keyboard once, and I wish there were more keyboards that used the Topre switch. Once you have tried this, no other keyboard will be the same. Its price is justified by its quality.
