Acer AL2223Wd 22" Widescreen LCD Monitor Review

Acer AL2223Wd 22 Widescreen LCD Monitor
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Overall I am very pleased with this monitor and would definitely recommend it to anyone on a budget. You'd be hard pressed to beat it for the price. However, it is not perfect...
PROS
- Screen is very bright (I had to turn it down), and very clear at native resolution
- Mine has no dead pixels
- "Ghosting" effect while paying fast-paced games is very minimal
- Comes with a DVI cable (many don't)
- GridVista software included is a handy tool that allows you to arrange open windows in a grid on your screen so you don't have to constantly switch between them.
CONS
- I can notice a *slight* change in brightness from the top of the screen to the bottom, even when looking straight at the screen. When I tilt the screen up or down, this difference becomes more apparent. But it isn't so bad as to be distracting as long as you have the monitor facing you perfectly.
- The screen is only 6-bit, which is below the ideal 8-bit. What this means is the monitor can only display a limited number of colors. Most users may not notice the minor dithering this causes, but to those who are into professional photo or video editing, you should probably cough up more cash for a monitor with an 8-bit screen.
- The stand is difficult to adjust and doesn't allow for much customization.
- The connectors are located in an inconvenient spot behind the stand.
For me, the pros far outweigh the cons. If you aren't looking to spend a boatload but want a large, impressive widescreen then this is the monitor you want!

HP W22 22" Wide LCD Monitor Review

HP W22 22 Wide LCD Monitor

I've been looking at LCD monitors for some time but most of the previous 20" and larger LCD monitors just didn't look good. I compared the new Gateway 24" to this HP 22" and overall preferred the HP. The HP W22 is bright with excellent contrast. And as a bonus the integral speakers have a reasonably good sound. I don't run games so I cannot comment on how it would perform for those applications but so far for all other apps, it works great. We have a lot of high resolution pics of our kids and they also look great on this monitor.
HOWEVER - When buying an LCD monitor you must understand that these monitors only work well at certain screen resolutions. If you run them at other than their "native resolutions" (in the case of the HP W22 it is 1680x1050) the picture quality suffers greatly. I had to buy a new video card that would support the "native resolution" of this monitor but the end result is well worth it.

absolutely awesome tv.
everything but sound is perfect. its maximun level of volume is not as high as it should be. that make it a tv for a small room.
some movies are recorded with low volume. to hear them you need a very quiet environment when you are watching this.

My sister bought one of these for use in Yakima, WA.
Pro:
1) Nice picture, especially HD. Yakima has HD broadcast channels I didn't know about, and they look great.
2) Audio better than I expected with a small TV like this. My dad is hard of hearing, but I was able to boost the treble and roll off the bass via the menu, and he can hear much better than with the old set.
3) Reception good on digital channels. Rabbit ears antenna from old tv works fine, though this house has really good reception, so you may need a better antenna if you are in a poor reception area.
Cons:
1) Remote control gets the job done, but it's a little hard to find the mute button for commercials. The on-set controls would be a pain to use, like most tvs, so don't lose the remote.
2) A 22 inch diagonal wide-screen tv is really pretty small -- especially when displaying a 4:3 program. Ideal viewing distance is probably around 6 to 8 feet or less.
3) Reception and picture poor on the old analog channels, but they are going away next month, so who cares?
Caveat: Shop around -- we got this set at Costco for about [...] less than the price I see at Amazon, though the picture at Amazon shows a wider base than the one we have. I double-checked the model, VO22L, but maybe there is some mixup?

I bought this television for under $200 and it was a great bargain for its size. The picture is good, but I am disappointed with the sound quality. The volume is limited and the speakers get overwhelmed very easily. If you're willing to put in some additional speakers, then this is a great television.

LG 22LD350 22-Inch 720p 60 Hz LCD HDTV
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
After the Samsung 22" in my bedroom died a premature death, I decided to give LG a try since I'd heard great things about their products in general. The picture quality does not disappoint and is superb. It is far better than the Samsung it replaced, better than my Samsung 40" 1080p and nearly as good as my 1080p 46" Toshiba. Sound quality as with any flat panel TV I've owned isn't very good. Don't expect any bass response when watching anything with a good soundtrack. There are several adjustments for sound, none of which offer much improvement.
The main menu has a myriad of options for adjusting the picture. You can choose from several pre-set modes or go into what they call the "expert" settings and fine tune to your exact preference using on-screen pictures and samples as your guide. When complete, you can save to either expert 1 or expert 2 so you can easily select your preference at any given time. There is also a menu selection for 3 energy saving or "eco" modes which seem to achieve results by darkening the picture. When performing the intial setup I used the auto program allowing the tv to scan for and lock in any channels I receive on my cable (no cable box) connection. All seemed well initially but when surfing through channels I noted on several occasions the tv would suddenly jump back to channel 2 and I would have to either surf again from that point or manually enter a higher channel number than what I'd been at. Eventually I figured out that it had entered into its memory channels 2-13 as TV and then 2-98 as CATV. Once I figured that out I went back into the menu and had to delete the TV channels 2-13 manually. Now I can surf channels without repeating. I have no idea why it duplicated channels 2-13 as none of those are available in this area without cable or satellite.
I really have no issues with the main menu, it's what LG calls the Quick menu that is absurdly redundant and which a person must access to use the sleep timer (more on that in my next paragraph). To use the quick menu, you navigate around a circle. The quick menu has several items which make no sense since they can be accessed through buttons on the remote as well as through the main menu. Some Quick Menu items actually require more button pushes to access them than they do if you use the main menu.
The remote is by far the worst I've ever had. This is a small tv I use in my bedroom and is the first tv I've owned in the last 15 or 20 years that did not have a sleep timer button on the remote. If this is your primary tv, that isn't a bad omission, but for a small set like this which is often used in a bedroom, the omission is annoying. To access the sleep timer you must either go through the main menu or to the quick menu both of which require about 8 button presses to access it. That in itself wouldn't be quite so bad if it were not for the rubberized multi-directional pad which also includes the enter button in the middle. The pad must be used to move through both the main and quick menus. It requires a great deal of force to use, a simple press on the arrows or the enter button won't work. After pressing hard enough to get it to work about half the time the menu item selector will go past the item you are trying to access or change. All other remote buttons work easily. Perhaps I got a defective remote, I don't know. To solve the problem I've ordered a programmable remote which is also illuminated, the LG remote is not. Perhaps with a better remote I'd be able to better enjoy the excellent picture.

HP W2207H 22-inch Widescreen LCD Monitor
Average Reviews:

As others have written, the visuals on this monitor are excellent, the sound is on the tinny side. I'm writing to cover new ground. I purchased this monitor from Amazon on May 21. It worked well for a week or so, then came the problems. The screen would go black when it was powered up. Unplugging worked for a while, but eventually the monitor went all white. To make a long story short, we called HP and the tech figured it was a bad pixel. In the chain of interviews one woman tech agreed when asked, that they would send a new, not refurbished monitor. When a refurbished monitor arrived, I connected to an HP supervisor and found the full story. When you purchase from an authorized dealer (Amazon is not) there can be a store warranty (eg 30 days, 15 days, whatever the store chooses). If I had purchased from such a dealer, and was over the store warranty a few days, the HP supervisor could have (at their discretion) sent me a new, not refurbished monitor. As it was, HP sent the refurbished model under a manufacturer's warranty. The HP warranty allows them to send a a new or refurbished replacement. It appears to be random, odds are it will be refurbished. This one year warranty on the model purchased from Amazon began not on the May purchase date, rather it is from the January 2008 manufacture date. If I had returned this monitor to Amazon, I would be subject to a 15% restocking fee. Welcome to a rock and a hard place. Failures like this are likely rare, but it leaves us with a refurbished model instead of the new one I paid for. Buyer beware.

First off you can buy this monitor for around 200.00 in several places, I paid 150.00. The clarity in the monitor is very good BUT if you do your connections with HDMI the Vista sound will not play and there is a crackling sound in the speakers. HP acknowledged there is a firmware issue within the monitor but cd's, tv etc all work fine. If you connect with the conventional speaker wire and vga cable it works just fine. For the money it is a great monitor. I personally like the glossy finish on the screen, some may not

Samsung UN22C4000 22-Inch 720p 60 Hz LED HDTV (Black) Review

Samsung UN22C4000 22-Inch 720p 60 Hz LED HDTV (Black)
Average Reviews:

I had originally bought a Vizio LED 22inch. It had poor sound and picture quality. Since 2006 I've been avoiding Samsung products since I bought a DVD recorder from them that records DVD's that only play on the machine that records them. My recorded DVD's wouldn't even play properly on another Samsung DVD player. Back then I called them to tell them my problem; they basically told me I was out of luck. I was hoping to Archive some old home movies.
At my house I have a Samsung DLP, and the beformentioned DVD player that upconverts the DVD's to high definition. I also had an old style 13 inch Samsung TV that gave good service.
I chose this Samsung 22 LED since I had seen it at Best Buy and saw that the picture quality was very good. There is pixelation on dark scenes but this may be due to AT&T U-Verse. Aside from this the picture quality is very good and better than a supposed 1080p Vizio I had bought. I later learned that the only place you can get 1080p is from a Blu Ray player. Cable/Satellite companies are broadcasting in 720p.
The sound on this TV is excellent and it comes with different sound options, all of which sound very well.
The only drawback so far on this TV is the on/off timer. This is a feature I wanted to keep since my old 13 inch Samsung had it. The weird thing about their On/Off timer is that when the TV comes on you can only choose from two source options, the USB drive or the coaxial cable connection. So you can't wake up to the HDMI source setting of the TV, I don't know why they put this limitation into the design of the TV, it's very odd. Hopefully they'll have a software update to correct it.
From what I've understood from reading the manual it can't play quicktime movies, I haven'd had time to try one. If it can't play quicktime videos that's another limitation the set should have corrected in the future.
The design of the TV itself is very nice, and while the remote is a bit bulky it has all the basic functions. I like that it has a sleep button right on the remote. Some other TV's make you go through a long Menu to get to the sleep setting; when you are falling asleep pressing a button a few times is a lot easier than some intricate navigation menu.
The OnScreen menu is easy to use once you figure out how to navigate around it. A thoughtful feautre they put in is that when you highlight a choice such as "digital noise filter" an explanation comes on at the bottom of the screen indicating what this feature does.
I liked that it has a PIP option. The only thing you can watch in the PIP window is the coaxial cable connection though. I hooked up my computer to the TV and was able to watch regular TV in the PIP window.
I would definitely recommend this set to a friend.

I have only had it a week and it is my first HD TV and I think it is great. I bought it for the bedroom and watch it from about 12 feet away and the screen size in my opinion is perfect. I can see all the detail but the set is not so large as to be obtrusive.
Picture quality is excellent for over the air channels using a coax cable to an external antenna that is in the attic. Sound is good and I think the Energy Star rating is a plus. There is a option to enhance the frequencies of the human voice so I can better understand what is being said. I think this really works.
I had a gift card for Fry's so I did not buy from Amazon this time but I did research other brands and sizes here. Like I said this is my first HD but I have looked at a ton of them at Best Buy and Costco. I cannot remember seing another set that had a better picture but I haven't really seen too many of the smaller screen sizes. It may just look better because it is small but I cannot imagine what 1080 would give you over the 720 it has. The LED may have something to do with it as well. I have seen no motion blur or ghosting and it is 60hz refresh rate.

I highly recommend this monitor! The picture quality is stunning, and it is clearly high build quality designed to last.
There is a very thorough review from July 2010 available at [...](Note that the price in the review is in GBP)
Quote: "U2211H is about ?235 which is a great price for a screen with these features and an IPS panel. It should make a very good buy for anyone considering a screen at this size" My point is that this screen is a great buy at ?235 (~400USD) which makes it a STEAL at around $250!
In my opinion this is a FAR better option than a LED screen. LED selling points are the slim profile and energy efficiency - this IPS monitor is slim enough to hang on the wall, and the difference in energy use is so marginal that you won't notice it on your bill. However, you WILL notice the difference in picture quality and build.
Dell offers a outstanding 3 year advanced warranty on these, which adds value. Again, this screen is clearly built to last.
I returned a HP monitor, and got this Dell instead, and I couldn't be happier!

We have had this monitor for two months. The off-angle image is not great. The image washes out pretty significantly. If you are looking straight on (as you would in most cases), the monitor has the potential to present you with a pleasing image and accurate colors. But in order to get the best out this monitor you have to calibrate it. Out of the box, the monitor is too bright and too "contrasty". I eventually got the brightness down to 25% and the contrast down to 31% and this is for a monitor near a window. To get the colors right, you need calibrate. The controls are easy to use and intuitive.
So if you have the time and desire to to get this monitor looking its best, then by all means pick one up.

I bought the Dell 2209WA to replace my Hanns-G 199N 19" standard flatscreen. I create fantasy art using Photoshop and I need accurate color across the whole screen. The Hanns-G was an excellent monitor that displayed much like an HP LP1965, and I needed that same quality in a widescreen.
As a general rule of thumb, you get a TN panel for gaming because of the ultra refresh rate; you get an MVA panel for movies because of the truer blacks, and you get an IPS panel for graphics and art because of the consistent color. It turns out that the 2209WA's e-IPS panel (which is the budget version of IPS) is very close in quality to my excellent Hanns-G and the HP. The colors are rich and complex right out of the box. The one aspect that I can't match to my old monitor is the native contrast (I've never tried color calibration because my audience doesn't use it). I turned the brightness way, way down and the contrast to about 70, but the highlights in my paintings are still a little too bright. This is negligible though, and the color itself is excellent. Considering the price of any other 22" widescreen IPS monitor, I'm more than willing to live with a variance that only my eye will notice. BTW - I'm using the DVI connection.
I'm not a gamer, so I can't speak to the refresh rate or ghosting. You're on your own there.
Important note: this is a 16:10 ratio monitor, which means the widescreen dimensions are designed for computer use rather than watching movies. If you want to watch DVDs on your PC without a black stripe at the top and bottom, get a 16:9 ratio monitor. Also, this monitor has a matte screen to eliminate glare. This is critical for an artist or anyone serious about viewing art, but if you're used to a glossy, vibrant screen it'll seem drab.
The height of the display on this monitor is just a fraction less than the height of a regular 19" monitor. So if you're upgrading from a 19" standard flatscreen like I did, your eyes won't notice any vertical difference. You're basically taking a standard 19" and extending it into a widescreen.
Construction seems to be high quality, particularly the stand which adjusts via spring calibrated to the weight of the monitor itself. This works really nicely, and the stand installs and removes elegantly. The control panel is intuitive to me so no issues there. And I'm very pleased that this monitor doesn't pretend to have speakers. I also won't use the USB ports, but it has `em if you want `em.
My 2209WA arrived with no dead pixels, no backlight bleedthrough whatsoever, and no display irregularities. Very, very nice. I highly recommend, especially for serious digital artists on a budget.
Final notes: be sure when you purchase that you don't confuse this with the 2209W, which is NOT the same thing. If you want the e-IPS panel, you must get the WA model. And look for a sale. This can sometimes be found for under $300.
