The Stream-Scanning technology does improve inbound data access rates, over buffer and scan technologies, like the desktop AV ware that is available, however, there is still some latency...but I think additional security is worth the wait....if you have a network of users trying to get their jobs done, who are not careful with what they access, this is a very good tool, and places control in your hands, not your users. As always, this is NOT an AV solution replacement, it should be used as part of your layered threat solution, including firewall, AV client and common sense!
The way it works: Spam, email borne threats, phishing and malware site locations are warehoused in a central repository, and indexed daily. The STM talks to the central server and picks up its blacklisted threats minute by minute. This creates a real-time threat database ON YOUR NETWORK. You can also add your own URL's, addresses and domains that you either don't want to grant access too, or that you believe may be a threat to your users. I love the email spam blocker, that uses in-cloud technology to identify risks in virtual real-time.
Highlights: The STM also has a very easily to use content management tool, blocking URL's based upon predetermined categories. The monitoring page provides up to the minute network usage statistics, which can give you who is attempting to access what, with the user IP address. Customize the notification messages that your users see, and receive daily or weekly reports to your admin email address. The unit is easily configured, with gigabit throughput.
Drawbacks: "Teaching" your device what URL's are friendly takes some time, so plan on getting lots or user requests to access certain sites that they feel should be available. Slight inbound latency. I also don't like the idea of paying for a subscription based service after I have paid $1,500 for a device...however, I think the costs are justifiable for what you get and how many users you can manage so quickly and easily. I give this tool a Thumbs Up!
