ATEN CE 750 - KVM / audio / serial extender - external Review

ATEN CE 750 - KVM / audio / serial extender - external
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is great if you want to move your workstation away where the physical computer and its noisy fans and hard drives are located. Alternatively this is great if you need to physically secure and lock the computer away from public access.
Video quality seems very nice. I've been using it at 1280x1024 over a 100 meter cable and see no video problems. Framerate, color depth, and clarity is unaffected since this uses analog transmission and not digital re-encoding as other KVM-over-IP devices may do.
With the audio, when amplification on remote speaker volume is turned up you can hear faint noise when the mouse is moved. I can work around this by reducing my remote speaker volume and instead turn up the soundcard volume output instead. However, this indicates that there is not perfect elimination of signal interference.
If you have an extended keyboard or mouse with extra media buttons or navigation buttons, be aware that they may not be supported and will have no effect. The product manual mentions this limitation.
I also tried plugging a USB hub and other devices into the remote USB ports, but devices other than mouse and keyboard do not appear to be supported--this is fine since the manufacturer does not claim otherwise, but just don't expect to be able to use other USB devices.
Despite these limitations, this is a great device for remotely locating your keyboard, mouse, monitor and audio away from the computer.

Don't buy cheap KVM extenders, you'll be glad you didn't. Everything Gefen produces is of high quality and tuned for actual A/V production work, instead of some weak picture that only a server admin could stand to look at all day.

The Gefen CAT5-1000 requires just one CAT5 cable to transmit video, audio and control signals to the remote workstation. It essentially bundles the signals together before, during and after transmission so that cabling is reduced while reliable signal transmission is achieved. This is the ideal solution for anyone who desires an effective method to extend their workstation anywhere within 330-feet from the computer, utilizing a sender and receiver methodology to connect the extended workstation to the computer. Simply connect the sender unit to your computer using the cables provided. Then connect the receiver unit to the computer's keyboard, monitor and mouse at the remote location, and finally connect the sender unit to the receiver unit. Both the sender and the receiver units must be connected to a power supply. When fully powered and operational, the units efficiently extend video, audio and control signals. CAT5 cable(s) sold seperately.Package Includes: Sender Unit, Receiver Unit, One 6ft VGA cable (PC/Black), One 6ft USB cable, One 6ft Audio cable, Two 5VDC Transformer.

Geffen 8x1 DVI SL/DL Switcher (EXT-DVI-841DL) Review

I am using this box to route numerous computers (both Mac and PC) to one Apple 30" monitor, keyboard and mouse. Now that it is setup, it works great. Out of the box, it was seeming not to function properly. Plug and play was not happening. The small manual that comes with the unit is surprisingly technical, and was required reading to figure out proper setup. One of 3 DIP switches on the board needed to be flipped to the on position. The switch is immediately accessible on the bottom of the case, under a piece of tape, without opening the unit. Once I figured this out everything worked fantastic. The different DIP switch configurations actually allow for greater product compatibility. The cost of the unit is a little steep, but all cables are included ( 8 monitor, 8 audio, 8 USB). The unit and cables are all of high-quality. The entire package feels tight and professional. I would recommend this product.

This is my third Aten KVM, and they've all been good. This one is the best so far. No problems with keyboard and mouse emulation (some KVM's cause boot hang-ups because they don't emulate well), the hotkey swapping is blazing fast, unit is heavy and well-built (lighter units tend to do a "wheelie" because of the weight of the cables coming off the back of them.
My only complaint is lack of response to my request to Aten to sell me a longer cable set - the short ones that come with the unit won't work for many users. There's a couple of longer sets on the Aten website, but requests to purchase those part numbers are being ignored...

The CubiQ CS1644 DVI Dual View KVMP Switch adds a new dimension to DVI KVMs by incorporating dual monitor support and an LED Status panel for a clear, simple method to select and monitor the advanced switching features of the KVM. Now you can extend your desktop across two 2560x1600 Dual link monitors, making it ideal for graphic designers, banking and finance consultants, medical applications, and gaming. The CS1644\'s independent (asynchronous) switching feature allows the KVM, USB ports, and audio to focus on different ports simultaneously. In order to simplify source identification, and manual port selection, the Status Panel has been expanded by the addition of LCDs that illuminate, to clearly indicate the feature selected, and the port to which it is connected. Other major features of the CubiQ include Video DynaSync, which ensures proper resolution and refresh rate when booting or switching computers. Mouse emulation maybe disabled to allow full functionality for programmable mice, and USB 2.0 peripheral sharing ports to share printers, and other external devices. The CS1644 supports digital video I.E. flat panel displays, data projectors, plasma displays, digital TVs and set-top boxes. Switching is accomplished by one of two methods: Hotkeys (you don\'t have to take your fingers off the keyboard), or front panel push buttons. Easy install and set up, simply connect the CS1644 between your computers, monitor, mouse and keyboard. Connect your microphone, speakers, and peripheral devices. No software to install, no configuration routines. Since the keyboard communicates directly with the KVM it will work with multiple computing platforms (PC (x86/x64), Macintosh PowerPC, and Sun Microsystems (Sparc)

The KVM really cleaned up my desk, and works quite well. The unit supports analong pass-thru, so if your workstation does not have two DVI outputs you can still use the KVM. My workstations have on DVI and one VGA, so I needed to purchase a VGA male to DVI male cable for each workstation that I wanted to connect to. If you have older monitors without DVI inputes you will need another VGA to DVI cable there as well. My one complaint is that the unit has not allowed my CAC/keyboard to login. I have had to attach a stand alone CAC reader to the workstation to support this functionality. The unit ship with only a power cord, so don't expect cables or adapters of any kind. My unit plans to order 50 more.

I tried using the Belkin Flip for six months because I couldn't find a competitive product. The flip provides poor video and very long transition times between computers. This unit by Aten is much superior, with support for 30" monitors (2560x1600), instant switching, and the unique capability to switch with or without USB attached. So if you have your printers and external hard drives on a USB extender box, just plug that into the Aten switch and presto! Each time you switch to another computer, that computer benefits from the entire set of devices. You can also revoke this by hitting "k" during your scroll-lock jumps, and leave the USB on one computer only. The Aten also supports full audio, has some useful front connectors (including an extra USB), and is solid and reliable. I recommend it highly.

ATEN's CS1782 Dual Link DVI KVMP switch sets a new standard in KVMP functionality by adding three major innovations. Display technology reads and remembers your monitor's optimal display settings (E-DDC), thereby eliminating display problems when simultaneously booting or switching between computers. With support for resolutions up to 3840 x 2400 you can enjoy the full capabilities of your wide screen monitor. 7.1 sound support provides a fully immersed audio experience for listening pleasure, gaming, or audio editing. In keeping with the proliferation of high speed devices, the CS1782 provides two USB 2.0 peripheral ports for sharing USB devices between your computers. A powered USB hub may be attached for added expansion. Switching computers is merely a matter of pressing a manual button, or by a few Hotkey strokes entered directly from the keyboard. The hotkeys allow for independently switching audio, KVM focus, and peripherals. Setup is as easy as disconnecting your existing cables and connecting the CS1782. There is no software to install, and it is compatible with virtually all USB compliant operating systems. Save money time and space, share one monitor, keyboard, mouse, speaker system, and set of peripherals between two computers. No more using the "wrong" keyboard or mouse, no more moving cables between computers, not to mention the number of speakers involved. The CS1782 comes complete with all cables including 7.1 audio, it supports Apple 20", 23" and 30" Cinema Displays, Apple special function keys, and has an unprecedented 7 year limited warranty. NOTE : The KVM will support both DVI-I and DVI-D, however the supplied video cables are DVI-D they will not work with VGA to DVI adapters, third party DVI-I cables or a VGA to DVI converter must be used. IOGear USB KVM Console Extender GCE700 Review

IOGear USB KVM Console Extender GCE700
Average Reviews:

This product worked out of the box, but the video image quality was not good and the mouse generated random right clicks from time to time. I had connected the local and remote unit with 50 ft of solid CAT5E cable and 25 ft of stranded, flexible patch cable. The manual states that you MUST use SOLID CAT5E or CAT6 cable, so I got rid of the patch cable and ran new SOLID cable end to end. Video image quality is now great, and the mouse/keyboard operation is solid - no problems at all.
If I did it again, I would spend the extra $20 or so and get the model which supports the audio as well. I missed the sound in my monitor's speakers :(

The IOGEAR USB KVM Console Extender allows access to a USB computer system or USB KVM switch from a remote USB console (USB keyboard, monitor, and USB mouse), up to 500 feet away, via CAT5e cable. This unit is perfect for moving the console away from the computer or the KVM switch. Your console can be moved out of the server room to a location that may be more comfortable and quieter. It is also useful for security and monitoring purposes, you can place the unit in a secure area at the same time that you put the console in the most convenient location for user access and monitoring. An USB KVM Console Extender is a cost effective solution because it uses inexpensive UTP (CAT5e) cabling to extend the distance, versus expensive and bulky coaxial cabling. It is easy to install and operate thanks to its Auto Signal Compensation (ASC) technology, which senses the distance and adjusts the signal levels accordingly so there is no need to do any DIP switch setting.

This is a very affordable, very easy to install, very easy to use switching system for keyboard, video and mouse.
It uses a cat-5 cabling system, which requires additional modules, 1-per server, in order to connect to the keyboard, video and mouse of the server. The cat-5 makes it very easy to cable, but the per-server modules do at to cost.
Keep in mind -- this is for local administration only. You need to have a keyboard, monitor and mouse connected to the unit in order to administer the servers. It doesn't allow remote network administration of the servers.
For an office or small lab, it's perfect.

ConnectPRO UR-14+PLUS USB 4-port KVM Switch with DDM, Includes Cables Review

ConnectPRO UR-14+PLUS USB 4-port KVM Switch with DDM, Includes Cables
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The product chassis gives the impression of robustness/industrial strength, as do the supplied cables, while remaining aesthetically pleasing. Switching is fast and seamless and 100% reliable, no USB driver loading/unloading, DDM works perfectly. Video display is exactly as if the PC and monitor are directly connected, no degradation. Support is outstanding.
I have a Compaq Presario 1200 running Damn Small Linux 2.4.31, a Dell Vostro 1700 (2007) with nVidia GeForce 8600M GT running Vista Ultimate 32-bit and an ASUS K60IJ (2010) which is dual-boot Ubuntu 10.04 64-bit and Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit. Native laptop display resolution on the Vostro is 1920 x 1200, on the ASUS it's 1366 x 768. I use a Microsoft Wireless Desktop and a Logitech wireless mouse. The Logitech mouse is used in place of the Microsoft mouse from the wireless desktop because keyboard & mouse switching for the Presario + Damn Small Linux combination seems to demand it -- perhaps a USB 1.1 constraint. With that configuration, all switching operations work absolutely flawlessly.
My main challenge, to which my note about compatibility issues pertains, regards auto-detection/configuration of 1920 x 1200 on my (2007) Dell E248FP external monitor from two relatively new laptops.
On the Dell Vostro, running Windows 7 Ultimate, I was unable to coerce the Windows 7 + nVidia combination beyond 1280 x 1024 when connected through the UR-14+. 1920 x 1200 works fine when the Vostro and E248FP monitor are directly connected, seemingly impossible through the UR-14+. I think that the Dell monitor generates EDED v1.0 and Windows 7 is geared towards EDID v2.0 and something must get lost in the UR-14+ translation. I fell back the Vostro to its (factory-installed) Vista Ultimate 32-bit and 1920 x 1200 on the external monitor worked out-of-the-box (perhaps because Vista was geared towards EDID v1.0).
On the ASUS K60, I initially had an identical problem with Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit + Mobile Intel® 4 Series Express (auto-detection offered maximum resolution of 1280 x 1024), but found I was able to use the Intel Graphics & Media Control Panel to coerce generation of external 1920 x 1200 @ 60Hz, which subsequently worked perfectly.
In the course of trying to reach 1920 x 1200 external on the ASUS K60, I also installed OpenSUSE 11.3 and Ubuntu 10.04. Auto-detection results were interesting -- OpenSUSE offered maximum external monitor resolution of 1024 x 768 and Ubuntu offered maximum external monitor resolution of 1360 x 768. I preferred the look/feel of Ubuntu and was able to quickly google the configuration changes needed to force 1920 x 1200 @ 60Hz on the external monitor -- which has since worked perfectly.
Before I summarise, I must praise ConnectPro for the quality of their support. They E-mailed me to notify me of a few days delay in shipping on account of a firmware upgrade. When I inquired about the status, I received immediate (i.e. same working day) response. When I explained early trials & tribulations with external 1920 x 1200 I gained immediate response. Subsequent discussions yielded immediate response. Then, following a lull in the dialogue from my side for ~1 week, ConnectPro contacted me to ask how I was progressing with their latest suggestions! They significantly exceeded my expectations in this regard.
Summary of my research/observations etc:
- if you use Windows 7, you want a DDM-capable KVM switch, of which the UR-14+ is one of relatively few examples
- I would recommend ConnectPro as a vendor based on:
--- my perception of quality of hardware
--- my experience of quality of support
- if you don't need 1920 x 1200 or 1920 x 1080
--- you'll be thrilled with the switching capabilities of the product
- if you do need these higher resolutions
--- you will stil be thrilled with the switching capabilities of the product
--- consider my experiences
--- read the EDID wikipedia pages, which
----- describe EDID-related shortcomings of video drivers
----- describe EDID-related shortcomings of display panels
----- may to some extent explain why the UR-14+ may be challenged by v1.0v2.0 translation for certain driver-display panel combinations
I would not hesitate to recommend this product for use in my employer's data centre.

The UR-14-PLUS + is a whole new kind of KVM switch. Featuring ultimate stability, the switch goes above and beyond the norm for USB KVM switches, which typically involves some sort of generic USB keyboard/mouse emulation - this switch with DDM technology maps your devices dynamically to each port. This creates a pinnacle of stability, ensuring there is no need for the OS to re-recognize/initialize your keyboard and mouse ever time you switch ports. This switch is Windows 7 compatible, and features hot-key controls, providing a simple and efficient way to share a VGA display and 4 total USB 2.0 devices between your systems. This kit includes 4 of ConnectPRO's ultra-thin 6' length KVM cables, as well as a power supply, and a firmware upgrade cable. 2-PORT Dual Dvi USB KVM Switch Review

2-PORT Dual Dvi USB KVM Switch

This unit is well constructed but lacking in features compared to some competitors such as IO Gear. Most annoying was a problem I experienced with the [Alt]-[Tab] key combination sending a stream of [Tab] keys to the computer which would only stop when you hit [Escape]. It also would intermittently repeat the last one or two characters typed for no apparent reason. I tried two different USB keyboards (SAITEK and HP) and experienced the same problem. I contacted Startech's tech support via email and they directed me to a link to download a BIOS patch. Presumably future version of the product will come with a new bios that will already fix the problem.
Aside from that annoyance it's a good product but compared to an IO Gear DVI unit I have used (but doesn't support two DVI monitors with two computers) it is lacking in some features, for example the IO Gear has a front panel button/hot key combination for viewing the video from one computer while still listening to the audio from the other.
One warning the "Starview 2 Port Dual DVI USB KVM Switch" does not include the cables you will need to hook up the computers so order those separately. I had ordered the 10 foot cables but the video image was badly degraded using that length so I ended up using the 6 foot IO Gear cables and it worked fine.
That said, when I was searching for a KVM to work with two computers with two DVI monitors there weren't a lot of choices. This product is competent and well built. Assuming the BIOS problem has been fixed I would recommend this product.

Purchased this 1u KVM to control two servers in our small office. I simply mounted the unit, powered it, plugged the combo 1u keyboard/touchpad into the KVM and used the TRENDnet USB/VGA KVM Cable, 6 ft. (Male to Male) TK-CU06 (separately purchased) to connect between the servers and KVM. I did not even power off the servers to make the connections and the KVM recognized the servers and keyboard/mouse combo. Well worth the money and keeps the rack / server room nice and clean. No regrets buying this item.
I made sure this KVM took USB connection from the keyboard and mouse, as some of the other KVMs only took input from PS/2 connectors.
I did not realize that ONE VGA-like connector FROM the KVM controls the USB keyboard input to and took VGA output from the server. That was a nice / clean touch.

I've used a fair number of other KVMs and had largely given up on ever having the convenience of using one ever again. Some coworkers had shown me an older set of these that worked really well with DVI switching. I really like this KVM. It works exactly the way you would expect, and in my case it took zero configuration.
Currently I switch four computers with this system: Windows 7 with a Geforce GTX 285, a Hackingtosh with an Nividia 9xxx series, a Linux box, and a mac laptop. It works flawlessly for all of them. You really can't say this with any other KVM setup.
