LG L246WP-BN 24-inch Widescreen LCD Monitor Review

LG L246WP-BN 24-inch Widescreen LCD Monitor

I suddenly found myself in need of a monitor with more inputs so I purchased this one. The HDMI input is particularly well done: there's a standard headphone jack on the left edge (next to the two USB ports) for listening to HDMI audio. I tested this with my AT&T U-verse DVR's HDMI output successfully. I imagine that the HDMI audio feature of the new ATI 2xxx-series video cards will work too. LG includes a HDMI-to-DVI monitor cable and a VGA cable. Should you need a HDMI-to-HDMI cable you'll have to purchase it separately. I bought a Monoprice 4-port HDMI switch and assorted cables to let me share this monitor between my DVR and PCs, an arrangement that works reasonably well. I have the component input hooked up to the DVR as well so I can watch TV using the monitor's PiP feature, though I've yet to use that much.
There are two tweaks that you may need to make. The default colors were way too dark from my PC, which I corrected by setting Picture | CSM to sRGB. That let me turn down brightness to a much more comfortable level. To view HDTV video without the picture being stretched vertically, set Screen | ARC to 1:1 instead of Full.
I'm very happy with this monitor. If you need a do-everything 24" monitor, buy this one.

ASUS VH226H 21.5-Inch Widescreen LCD Monitor - Black Review

ASUS VH226H 21.5-Inch Widescreen LCD Monitor - Black
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
(Intro)I have a two year old and as such, I can't play some of the more violent video game console titles that I used to before he was born . Either my son is awake and so I can't have him see me fight aliens and world war II enemies or he is asleep and so the sound of the game is too loud that it will wake up while he is taking his nap. So I figured I'll pick up a small monitor to use with my Sony Playstation 3 just for games and to watch movies/tv shows from my PC as a 2nd monitor in the office. Since my primary reason for picking up this monitor is to play Playstation 3 games, the monitor had to be 1080p (1920x1080 native resolution) to avoid seeing black bars on the top and bottom of the monitor when playing 16:9 aspect ratio games or movies. So far, I am really happy with my purchase.
PROS
- Fast recycle time for games. You can really tell between this monitor and say my Dell 30" monitor I use for photo editing.
- Decent color output. I do wedding photography on my main PC so I know the difference between a great quality monitor and a budget quality monitor but all in all, for a budget monitor, it produces pretty good colors. I would not recommend this monitor for professional photography or videography as this monitor is only 6-bit monitor and so you will not get the full 16.7 million colors that you would get from a high quality monitor.
-HDMI and DVI inputs are seperate. Some budget monitors cut corners but combining the HDMI and DVI ports but this monitor has it seperately so you can have both your PC and HDMI device connected at the same time. I personally have my PC connected to the DVI port and my Sony Playstation 3 to the HDMI port.
-Seems like this monitor has good quality control. All in all, most people including myself seem to receive this monitor with no dead pixels.
-Built in speakers makes it convenient for those with little desk space.
-Very lightweight. I can't believe how little this monitor weighs compared to my Dell 3007WFP. I haven't attended a lan party in years but if I do, I'll definately be taking this monitor with me instead of the heavier Dell 30".
-Fast response rate. My eyes may not be the greatest but I can not see any ghosting during my game play. Movies look great as well.
-Headphone jack. This was the one requirement for me as I need to use headphones when my son is sleeping. Even when you connect an HDMI device, the audio from the HDMI device is passed to the headphone jack.
-Bright LCD. Great if you are working in a bright room.
CONS
-Panel is a 6-bit TN panel so the best for photography. Probably like 95% of monitors today are 6-bit monitors so this is not a deal breaker versus other similar priced monitors as it will also be TN.
-Speakers leave a lot to be desired. At this price, I wasn't expecting much. Average quality. Best to use good quality headphones if you got them for gaming.
-No height adjustment. Not surprising at this price but if you work for long hours in front of your monitor, you may want to purchase a monitor stand.
-Light tends to bleed from the top and bottom of the screen but this is also normal for monitors of this price range. After a while, you don't really notice it as much. It mainly stands out when you are watching a movie where the aspect ratio is not 16:9 and so black borders are created.
-Annoying input notice each time there is a handshake from external device to monitor. The Sony Playstation 3 often drops the signal when going into a game or some other Sony menu options so you see the message "HDMI Source" on the top left each time it does this but it's not a big deal.
-Menu button layout not the easiest to navigate, especially since they are not backlit.

Westinghouse LVM-42W2 42-Inch 1080p LCD Video Monitor Review

Westinghouse LVM-42W2 42-Inch 1080p LCD Video Monitor
Average Reviews:

Ok I was going to write a long story about how I got here but who really cares.
The bottom line is this unit completely rocks. I compared it to the Sony SXRDs and the JVC 1080P ILAs - both are 1080P displays but will not accept a 1080P signal. The picture is incredible - truely like an 8 megapixel photo in HD. Even Home Theater Mag rated its performace (96) higher than the Sony (94), JVC (92) and all the DLP (< 90) units in its 2/2006 HDTV face off. But remember its a monitor not a TV so you'll need to either have a cable box, sat receiver, computer or external tuner. Actually this is one monitor which you can hook everything up to since it has 5 HD inputs. I've only found one weakness - sometimes when switching between sources it sometimes looses sinc and goes pink - but its easily fixed by switching again to another source and back.

LG W2600H 26-Inch Full HD 1080P Widescreen LCD Monitor Review

LG W2600H 26-Inch Full HD 1080P Widescreen LCD Monitor
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This monitor works flawlessly when fed from the DVI-D connection on the back of the monitor to a Macintosh Computer(PM G4 2x1.25Ghz Mirror Doors) through the Mac's DVI-I port. Many lcd monitor specs show the Mac being connected via the VGA port, and I'm sure that would work, but the DVI connection works on this LG W2600H without any additional drivers or software downloads.
Pros:
Eye-popping contrast and color after calibration.
(Calibration is in the Systems Preference/Display area.)
Plug & View convenience.
Cons:
You will need a $20-$30 cable to connect via DVI-D (Not Included)
The Mac CPU and Monitor will not work as one for power on/off like an Apple monitor (ADC) did.
Did I mention this monitor is huge, but the picture is great.

Samsung SyncMaster 2443BWX 24" LCD Monitor Review

Samsung SyncMaster 2443BWX 24 LCD Monitor
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
There are several types of monitors, and this is the least expensive "TN" type. There are other types of panels, but the TN panels are known for generally faster response at lower prices, and with narrower viewing angles and "shallower" colors compared to other panel types. This makes TN panels most suitable for gamers and casual users.
After unpacking this monitor and hooking it up, I was surprised how bright and colorful it is...Very good for a TN panel. The default brightness out of the box is too bright. After adjusting the brightness, I checked it for dead or stuck pixels, and thankfully found no bad pixels.
I don't really mind the viewing angles since I'm using it as a computer monitor and I sit right in front of it. However, on dark images you can see the monitor gets progressively brighter near the top of the display and darker near the bottom, although it's not really noticeable most of the time unless you're looking for it (or unless you're picky about your display). During casual use this is not objectionable.
For 90% of users, myself included, the only way you'd notice a difference in color range between this monitor an a more expensive panel (such as IPS) is if you set it up next to an expensive panel.
As TN panels go, this monitor is very good. I would definitely recommend this monitor for casual users, since it's a lot of monitor for the price. Programmers, web designers, authors, and many others will love this monitor. Also, it's a great monitor for gamers since (in my subjective opinion) the input lag isn't bad, and the pixel response is fast.
Because of the progressively increasing brightness near the top of the display on black images, I would not recommend this monitor for anyone whose job requires precise color control for image editing, video editing, etc. Those users should pass on TN panels and should look instead at more expensive panel types, such as IPS panels from Apple and other vendors.
Also, bear in mind that it only has VGA and DVI inputs, so if you need DisplayPort or HDMI inputs then you'll need to look elsewhere. (My video card only has DVI outputs so this is not a limitation for me, but YMMV.)
Buying tip: Because I wanted a monitor that's guaranteed to have no dead pixels, I purchased this display from a local electronics retailer. Shipping a monitor back because of dead pixels is an expensive hassle. In addition, I recommend that if you get a monitor with bad pixels and you take it back to the brick and mortar store, just tell them "it doesn't work", because some stores won't let you return an otherwise-normal monitor just for 2~3 dead pixels.

I am using this box to route numerous computers (both Mac and PC) to one Apple 30" monitor, keyboard and mouse. Now that it is setup, it works great. Out of the box, it was seeming not to function properly. Plug and play was not happening. The small manual that comes with the unit is surprisingly technical, and was required reading to figure out proper setup. One of 3 DIP switches on the board needed to be flipped to the on position. The switch is immediately accessible on the bottom of the case, under a piece of tape, without opening the unit. Once I figured this out everything worked fantastic. The different DIP switch configurations actually allow for greater product compatibility. The cost of the unit is a little steep, but all cables are included ( 8 monitor, 8 audio, 8 USB). The unit and cables are all of high-quality. The entire package feels tight and professional. I would recommend this product.

Switch 1X4 USB Dh Dvi Waud Cac Support Review

The KVM really cleaned up my desk, and works quite well. The unit supports analong pass-thru, so if your workstation does not have two DVI outputs you can still use the KVM. My workstations have on DVI and one VGA, so I needed to purchase a VGA male to DVI male cable for each workstation that I wanted to connect to. If you have older monitors without DVI inputes you will need another VGA to DVI cable there as well. My one complaint is that the unit has not allowed my CAC/keyboard to login. I have had to attach a stand alone CAC reader to the workstation to support this functionality. The unit ship with only a power cord, so don't expect cables or adapters of any kind. My unit plans to order 50 more.

Pros:
+ Full 1080p HD 23" LED Display

+ Touch Screen controls
+ Amazing design: very thin, very simple and "clean"
+ Controls both for beginners and nerds :P
+ I think it's a good price
+ Very easy to set up. Emphasis on the VERY part.
Cons:
- No integrated speakers and lack of Auxiliary Audio port leaves you with a lot of time to think about how to have audio if you are using this for an Xbox or PS3. I found a way but it was annoying to look for an alternative.
- No VGA port. It doesn't really matter for me, but for some that's a buzz kill.

I tried using the Belkin Flip for six months because I couldn't find a competitive product. The flip provides poor video and very long transition times between computers. This unit by Aten is much superior, with support for 30" monitors (2560x1600), instant switching, and the unique capability to switch with or without USB attached. So if you have your printers and external hard drives on a USB extender box, just plug that into the Aten switch and presto! Each time you switch to another computer, that computer benefits from the entire set of devices. You can also revoke this by hitting "k" during your scroll-lock jumps, and leave the USB on one computer only. The Aten also supports full audio, has some useful front connectors (including an extra USB), and is solid and reliable. I recommend it highly.

ATEN's CS1782 Dual Link DVI KVMP switch sets a new standard in KVMP functionality by adding three major innovations. Display technology reads and remembers your monitor's optimal display settings (E-DDC), thereby eliminating display problems when simultaneously booting or switching between computers. With support for resolutions up to 3840 x 2400 you can enjoy the full capabilities of your wide screen monitor. 7.1 sound support provides a fully immersed audio experience for listening pleasure, gaming, or audio editing. In keeping with the proliferation of high speed devices, the CS1782 provides two USB 2.0 peripheral ports for sharing USB devices between your computers. A powered USB hub may be attached for added expansion. Switching computers is merely a matter of pressing a manual button, or by a few Hotkey strokes entered directly from the keyboard. The hotkeys allow for independently switching audio, KVM focus, and peripherals. Setup is as easy as disconnecting your existing cables and connecting the CS1782. There is no software to install, and it is compatible with virtually all USB compliant operating systems. Save money time and space, share one monitor, keyboard, mouse, speaker system, and set of peripherals between two computers. No more using the "wrong" keyboard or mouse, no more moving cables between computers, not to mention the number of speakers involved. The CS1782 comes complete with all cables including 7.1 audio, it supports Apple 20", 23" and 30" Cinema Displays, Apple special function keys, and has an unprecedented 7 year limited warranty. HP W2408H 24-inch Widescreen LCD Monitor Review

HP W2408H 24-inch Widescreen LCD Monitor
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I recently did some much needed upgrades for my home office and this by far my favorite. I first saw it in Best Buy, came home to check for online reviews and to see if I could find it cheaper...I did at Amazon!
It's VERY easy to set up and is crystal clear. ( I mean, razor sharp -- no stretched or blurred look anywhere!) However, there was something not quite right with the colors (especially greens) that really bothered me. PLUS the HP "My Display" software that goes with it that contains all of the drivers etc, is not fully functional on non HP machines. (meaning no calibration was available for color or contrast beyond what's built into the monitor itself which was never enough to fix my problem) I was so frustrated and disappointed. (I had been warned of this on another site but thought I'd take a gamble) Well, after trying to hook it up via the HDMI (from VGA) cable that came with it to a new $150 video card -- the colors were still way off and now the screen was all jumpy from that stupid card...(that went right back!) Then, I noticed something when I right clicked on my desktop to adjust my display settings (in XP pro) there was a selection (that had been there all along...duh) that said NVIDIA Control Panel (my internal graphics card) and I was able to calibrate the colors and adjust everything else there and now everything's hunky dory! When it first boots up, the colors look a little neon-ish again but within seconds it goes to the profile I created from my graphics card software. I am sure many would have figured it out sooner than I did, I just wanted to prevent anyone else from beating their head against the wall for a week like I did if I could. (BTW, I have completely removed the video card that I bought and it's hooked up via VGA and it is still crisp and clear)
**BTW, even though the My Display software is largely useless for me, I left it there. For some reason when I uninstalled it, the light that's under the transparent power button on the top of the monitor goes away. That was the only noticeable change after uninstalling it but it annoyed me, so I reinstalled it and it's back on and I just ignore the software**
My husband and I publish a local magazine that is glossy and full color and I am able to do so much more with this monitor than I could before. I can view two (sometimes 3) projects side by side if need be...I love that! And typing an email in outlook looks like it's in about a 60 font! And programs like Illustrator where you need a lot of workspace it's invaluable. I never have to scroll around to grab or view something. My last monitor was a 19" Sony flat panel (that cost more than TWICE what this one did 4 years ago) and I thought it was just fine but once I plugged this lil beauty in I quickly passed it on to my son for his computer. I haven't needed to use the portrait position of the screen so I haven't even tried it. But it came that way when it arrived and was very easy to swivel back around.
One bad thing...don't count on ditching your speakers for the ones that come with this one -- man do they stink! I swear my laptop has better speakers. But it's sort of like people griping that their cell phone camera doesn't take good enough pictures. If you want a good camera buy a camera! If you want a good monitor buy this one and just pretend the speakers aren't even there. The price is way worth it even without the speakers.

This unit is well constructed but lacking in features compared to some competitors such as IO Gear. Most annoying was a problem I experienced with the [Alt]-[Tab] key combination sending a stream of [Tab] keys to the computer which would only stop when you hit [Escape]. It also would intermittently repeat the last one or two characters typed for no apparent reason. I tried two different USB keyboards (SAITEK and HP) and experienced the same problem. I contacted Startech's tech support via email and they directed me to a link to download a BIOS patch. Presumably future version of the product will come with a new bios that will already fix the problem.
Aside from that annoyance it's a good product but compared to an IO Gear DVI unit I have used (but doesn't support two DVI monitors with two computers) it is lacking in some features, for example the IO Gear has a front panel button/hot key combination for viewing the video from one computer while still listening to the audio from the other.
One warning the "Starview 2 Port Dual DVI USB KVM Switch" does not include the cables you will need to hook up the computers so order those separately. I had ordered the 10 foot cables but the video image was badly degraded using that length so I ended up using the 6 foot IO Gear cables and it worked fine.
That said, when I was searching for a KVM to work with two computers with two DVI monitors there weren't a lot of choices. This product is competent and well built. Assuming the BIOS problem has been fixed I would recommend this product.

Here are the settings I use that work perfectly for this LCD:
1. Use the DVI cable rather than VGA (which simply won't work for such a big screen).
2. Color adjust -> sRBG rather than other settings to get sharper text (1st button -> color adjust -> 4th button -> 2nd button a few times -> sRGB -> 4th button -> 1st button a few times).
3. If the text are too small for you, use 1440x900 instead (for PC: Control Panel -> Display -> Settings -> 1440x900).
I tried VGA and it was too blurry to read the text. I also found the sRBG color adjustment gave me the sharpness I need for text. To get the best resolution use 1920x1080 if your driver supports it. But I am getting old with decayed vision, and 1440x900 is perfect for me.
With these settings, VA2770W is as sharp as all the smaller LCDs I used in the past, and provides extra space that makes reading text much easier!
