This review is based on the following:
Sub used as down-firing
Sub is hardwired - (placed in a position that I did not need to purchase wireless kit)
Purchased: 2/5/11
Replaced: 8" Sony sub
Room size: 27' x 18', but listening side is about 13'.5" x 18' I know subs do not know the difference, but for location purposes I only needed to worry about getting good base in that section of the room
Summary:
Sound: 5 out of 5
Please keep in mind I went from a 2002 8" sony to a 2011 12" Polk but I can't imagine getting a better base for less. If you were going from 12" to 12" not sure how much different it would be. I have no reference. I can describe how it sounds and WOW! Great smooth and clean bass at low levels. Delivers the bass you can feel without overpowering the rest of the tracks. I have the crossover set (80 Hz). Sub has loosened pretty well over the last month and a 1/2 sounds even better than it did at first set up. I love the sound that this thing produces. I just can not say enough about how clear and warm the bass is.
When it needs to this thing can flat out rumble. Watching movies with this makes it a whole new experience. I mentioned how well it has broken in and in fact I think I am going to have to do the MAHC (auto calibration set up) again on my receiver once I hit the 6 month mark.
Features: 3 out of 5.
If you HAVE to put this in forward firing mode and in a cabinet -you might be pretty upset since the remote more than likely would be useless.
When you want to check the level of the sub you press the up or down on the volume control on the remote. You then have to count blinking lights. Not a big deal when sub is in down firing position because otherwise you are having to get out a flash light and try to see behind the sub to read numbers. It could become a problem though if you have the sub in front firing mode in a cabinet. It could then be problematic because not only would the remote not work, but you would not be able to see blinking lights. There could/would be a work around if... you had a receiver like mine where you can set multiple listening positions and then you could set different sub levels with your receiver and probably would not need the remote. Not ideal though so that is the reason for score.
Looks:
This thing is a beast! some have complained about the blue light on the bottom of the sub. I do not have a problem with it at all and actually like the the blinking light (it only blinks when you want to adjust volume) for testing volume because you can tell from sitting position, and not have to get on the floor to try and read numbers.
I wish I could report on the wireless, but I did not need the purchase of the wireless kit
Music Tested/Set Up With:
Primus: My Name is Mud (checking for phase and that "funky punch")

Nine Inch Nails: Get Down Make Love (off Sin Single) also very deep
Various Jazz and Blues: The Groove Tube / Stevie Ray Vaughn / Joe Bonamassa - Live / and Dave Matthews

LOTR - Two towers - DVD
Gladiator - DVD
Inception - BR
Despicable Me - BR
