I purchased these monitors because they are the same technoligy as the ThinkPad T400S. The big difference is the ThinkPad has a horizontal screen and the Planar has a square screen. Not a big deal (just 2 different resolutions). Planar's tech support was great to maximize the touch functions of the screens.

I own it! What a marvelous laptop! Touch sensitive, sexy looking and wow, look
at that screen. Worth every penny! HP came through this time. Don't waste your
time on other outdated models, with the 'Z' for last letter. They are the outdated
model. This is a fantastic laptop, good price point and HP assurance program.
You can't go wrong with this baby. I highly recommend a buy. Wow, wow, wow!!!

Having used both Elo and Planar touchscreens, I've always found the planar units to be more responsive and to have slightly crisper displays. This new model from Planar's "value series" did not dissapoint. I used it to build a touchscreen kitchen PC and paired it with a VESA100 undercabinet mount from 'Premier Mounts' (also available on amazon) and an old laptop.
THE GOOD:
*Most importantly the planar passes the "wife test" for ease of use.
*The 15" size at 1024x768 resolution is large enough for iTunes and Windows Media Center without any scrolling/resolution issues and yet leaves space below the screen for plates and objects on the counter.
*The other nice thing about this model is that the bezel around the screen is on the smaller side. Too many touchscreens have huge/ugly bezels.
*No drivers/software required for Windows--just connect the USB cable to your PC and it starts working. An optional calibration program can improve accuracy.
THE BAD:
*As with all touchcreens, response time is slower than a normal LCD which causes a trace of ghosting during fast action video (e.g. sports), but this issue is barely noticeable... especially on a kitchen PC where you are only half paying attention.
*The vertical viewing angle is "OK" but not great. Standing above the screen while it is tilted slightly up, you get some washing out of colors. You may need to tilt significantly to avoid this.
*The 1-watt speakers built into the monitor are better than many built-in speakers, but they still aren't "good enough." You're going to want external speakers if there is any kind of ambient noise nearby. Zero bass.
*This isn't really a negative but I just wanted to mention that this is NOT a multi-touch monitor. You can only touch one place at one time.
Overall -- I'm very happy and would purchase again!

We needed a low-profile monitor for a podium. This works nicely. Its stand is integrated so it can sit very low to the surface without a stand holding it up in the air. Works very well, but it does have a slight loss of sensitivity to touch in the extreme corners. Over all a very nice product. Another plus is that all cables needed for installation are included - you will need a serial port in your pc.

Compaq L2105TM LCD Touch Monit

One of my employees suggested that a touch screen monitor would improve his performance by saving him time. I never thought that I would be able to get him one for $300. I set this up on a Windows XP machine very easily. I just put the CD in the computer and selected the option to add drivers for Windows XP. The drivers installed before I could blink. We restarted the computer and the touch functionality worked seamlessly. With XP you do not get the two-touch functionality. It took some getting used to at first to know exactly where to press especially when closing windows. The native resolution is very tiny but the picture is crisp. We mounted this monitor on an arm that was previously holding a 20" non-touch monitor and we didn't need to make any adjustments for the weight increase. I'm a huge fan and for $300 I'm thinking of getting more for some of my other employees.

Got this about 1 week ago with the 8 cell battery and 250GB hard drive. I upgraded the RAM to 2GB and have upgraded the OS to Win7 Pro in order to take full advantage of the touch/tablet features. Out of the box, this took only about 5 minutes to power on and setup. Lenovo tries to get you to pull the trigger on several add-on apps upon booting the first time, but you can skip it. These are programs like ID vault and other useful but unnecessary programs. After skipping that, I setup a few things for Windows, and we're in! My wireless network detected without a hitch. I'm using a Zyxel 550N router...great signal and reception.Touch screen:
I was anxious to try the touch screen, so I dove in and tried the Lenovo installed stuff 1st. Lenovo Natural Touch is the app that appears to be much like the U1 interface shown at CES. Very "iPhone-like". It runs a little laggy at first, but when you get a feel for the touch speed, it is actually quite responsive. I tried playing with pictures and the multi-touch works great! IT DOES WORK without having to upgrade windows to a higher version than starter edition...but, using Lenovo's custom software. I played the sample video which ran pretty smooth and looked just fine. I then tried the notes app and recorded a video of myself which worked as expected. I was able to write on sticky notes witout a problem using my fingertip. I also bought a Pogo which I think works fine for the touch points and just okay for actual writing. So, I had a license for Win7 Pro and decided to install it since it added full support for tablets. I got a student deal for $29 a while back...couldn't resist. So, I did the anytime upgrade and it took about 20 minutes total. Whalla...Win7 Pro.I quickly installed Office 2007 including OneNote. They all work fine and multi-touch works to zoom in Word and Powerpoint. OneNote is super for this tablet!!! You can take documents and use a highlighter on screen or scribble notes on top of text documents...VERY COOL and will be quite useful!LCD quality:
The screen is beautiful--very clear and while reflective/glossy, the quality is excellent, bright and easy to look at.
The screen of course can be viewed vertically or normally. In portrait mode, I found the picture to be a little less sharp and it puts a slight strain on the eye. I'm not sure if its the refresh rate or what, but there is a slight metallic sheen to images and a little bit of a contrast issue. Nothing major, but definitely noticeable. By default, the accelerometer is turned offWeb tests:
It of course has IE, but I downloaded Firefox for security and personal preference reasons. Both run fine. They both seem to respond to the multi-touch and the spread gesture zooms in, while swiping scrolls. You can easily navigate like you would on an iPhone. Speed was good.I played a few flash games and they played full speed. My 3 yr old daughter even played some games at [...] and used the touch screen to control them with ease!I then tried streaming movies on netflix....perfect playback although the screen size and format can waste a little screen real estate. I played a 4:3 movie and it wasted a lot of space until I went full screen...the small browser window made it so you had to scroll up or down a bit in order to see the whole picture. Going full-screen fixed it.
So, flash and silverlight work just fine. I plan to try some other games soon to push this a little....I'll report back as I get time.Inking:
I have no experience with other units that have the RF pens, but I can say that the inking/writing is not overly intuitive. Windows Journal and other tablet apps work great though. One I train myself and calibrate this to my writing, I think it'll improve a lot. The pen/highlighter that I can use in other Office apps is going to be useful for research and school work. The handwriting recognition is not super and almost a waste for inputting a lot of text, even with the Pogo stylus I bought. Plan to use this for drawing and less detailed writing...Misc. Stuff:
SD card reader works great and you can flip through pictures on the card via the Lenovo Natural touch app. The speakers and sound quality are not good at all. It is very "tin-ny" and not loud, though in a quiet room I guess it would be ok. Voices in a movie are audible, but the EQ is bad. I didn't try headphones, but I'm positive that they'd improve the listening experience. A program called "Bumptop" is included an pretty cool to show off touch features. It creates a 3-D environment for files and pictures that you can move around and stick on walls, stack up or sort. A brief tutorial shows you how...pretty cool. Like many other Lenovo products, this too has the facial recognition which works okay. It came with McAfee security suite on it, which I promptly removed since I'm not a fan. I am just using MS Security Suite and Malicious SW tools....works fine for me. I won't do any risky browsing anyway on this. I haven't tried an eBook, but I think this won't look any different than a regular notebook. The screen is certainly not e-ink though I think it'll serve the purpose for those of us who want the capability, but don't plan to buy a kindle or even the iPad.The 8-cell battery (getting 6-6.5hrs) works great as a grip when using this in portrait/tablet modes. The keyboard has a nice feel to it, though fast touch-typists like myself are going to struggle when trying to type a lot. The left-hand side of the KB is slightly smaller for shift/tab/caps keys, but still very useable. Full sized keys, but the layout is just slightly off. The SD slot is in the front and covered when not in use...Final Thoughts:
I bought this because I wanted something to travel with and Apple didn't really announce what I needed in January. So, I wanted something new and cool...which this is. I thought the idea of a touch interface was in line with progress and I'm happy I got this. For the price, this is a sound solution for a netbook that gives you just enough "shiny and new" to keep interest. The touch is not a gimmick and I will make use of it for sure. The build quality is solid and the look/finish is beautiful, though a finger print magnet for sure. Overall, I must say that I am quite happy with this purchase. As a Mac user, I often have a less than stellar outlook on PC machines, though Win7 is a huge improvement. Not without the issues that plague all Windows machines, this Lenovo is exactly what I wanted and will prove to be a great 2nd laptop and travel companion.
Dave

ASUS Eee PC T101MT-EU17-BK 10.1-Inch Convertible Tablet Netbook (Black)

July 13, 2010 - I uploaded multiple videos showing my hands-on review and tutorials on this netvertible. So far, I've done 4 videos: first impressions, OS and RAM upgrade tutorial, Inking & Touchscreen hands-on, and a video showing Plants VS Zombies played on the Touchscreen. Some elements I may not have stated in this review may be shown in the videos. You can find them by searching "t101mt" at mycoretechs*com. Change the * to a .
First Impressions
I am very impressed with this tablet netbook. Right out of the box, my first impressions of its chassis is that it is very sexy. Let me elaborate on that. The casing material is made out of an anti-fingerprint matte material. This includes the palm rest and the keyboard. The screen bezel is still made out of the same glossy material as the previous ASUS netbooks. I like the brushed white strip design on the back of the screen- it certainly adds to the design.
Upgraded
As with many users here, I agree that to enjoy this netbook, as well as to unlock its full potential, one must do a couple of upgrades. I added a Corsair Memory VS1GSDS800D2 1 GB PC2-6400 800Mhz 200-pin DDR2 Laptop Memory Kit. The RAM upgrade really helps with the system's responsiveness (including inking) and multitasking capability. Besides the RAM, I also installed a copy of Windows 7 ultimate. Home Premium and up will unlock the multi-touch capabilities of the touchscreen. As you read this, treat each and every one of my findings as based on this upgraded version.
I'd like to add this to those who are interested in hard drive upgrades. I will make a video of this next month, but for now, here's what I know based tinkering. The hard drive bay is right under the keyboard. The keyboard is removed by inserting a small pin or precision screwdriver into 4 mini holes and lifting the keyboard unit up. There is a small sticker that says it will void warranty if removed. After removing a number of screws, the hard drive is exposed. I will be adding an SSD (or maybe an SSD hybrid) next month and will update you on this. Besides the limitation of the Atom CPU, the stock hard drive is what really provides the slightly slow program loads.
Keyboard
The keys are tremendously pleasant to type on. ASUS used the same keyboard type as the Eee PC 1201N- island chiclet keys. If you are used to keyboards without any space in between, it will take a few hours to get used to this, but as any of my friends who tried it, you will eventually come to like its spacing, as it prevents typo on this limited space. What I personally like is that this time around, ASUS placed a second Function key (one next to the left CTRL key and another under the Enter key on the far right). This allows users to use one hand to set the volume level, as well as reach other keyboard functions that are placed on the right side of the keyboard. Note: I just wanted to throw this out there- out of many netbooks I've used, I still believe the very best, in terms of ergonomics and feel, is the HP Mini 311's.
Touchscreen
The special attraction that makes this netbook unique is its touchscreen feature. The resistive touchscreen has two touch points which gives users the best of both resistive and capacitve worlds. Let me explain this, resistive screen allows users to use a stylus pen or any sharp-pointed object (like a fingernail's tip) to write on and control the smallest details on the screen. So you can literally draw and write, with the system being able to detect your strokes.
Although, this does not compare against a capacitive screen's WACOM digitizer pen, which as the name suggests, uses digital inputting and will not only read each stroke but also the users' pen pressure. But the advantage of resistive over capacitive is that, capacitive requires a special stylus or a digitizer pen to be able to do any inking. iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch all uses capacitive screens. If you have one of these devices, you will notice that it requires your finger to control the screen and will not read any stylus or fingernail strokes.
Now, with the T101MT netbook, the two touch points allow users to switch from Pen mode to Finger mode. Think of the Finger mode as imitating a capacitive screen. It uses two touch points (where Penmode uses one) and allows users to do what capacitive screens can do: multi-touch, pinching, expanding, two finger scroll.
Screen Quality
Some reviewers are claiming that this has a grainy look. I would like to add that although it does have this look (which all touchscreens have), it is quite unnoticeable unless you really put your face on the screen. I'd hate to keep bringing the Apple devices up, but to compare the graininess, the T101MT looks way less grainy than the iTouches.
Another quality I like is that this netvertible has a matte screen. It will still attract skin oil but it resists finger prints. The included stylus has a rounded tip which glides on the screen- it will not scratch your screen at all. I won't be the only one using this netvertible so I decided to protect it anyway. I placed a AG2 Anti-Glare Screen Protector for 10.1" Widescreen Netbooks on the screen. This screen protector will NOT alter the screen's quality, brightness, or touch sensitivity. It also comes with a microfiber cloth to clean the screen, really useful.
Speakers
The speakers are placed under the palm rests, on the front of the netbook. The sound is acceptable for such a small unit. It is not tinny at all. It's loud but not booming.
Battery
I get about 4-5 hours of use per battery charge, always on Windows 7 High Performance mode (not to be confused with ASUS Super Hybrid Engine). My tasks, though, are pretty inconsistent- sometimes I'm writing on my blog, or watching videos, or web browsing, or playing 2D games, but these numbers are the average amount of hours I get. Balanced mode will surely add an hour or two, depending on the tasks.
I'd also like to add that doing some CPU-taxing tasks, like streaming videos and playing games, will require me to use the Super Performance Mode of the ASUS Super Hybrid Engine, which brings me to CPU usage.
CPU Capability
This is a netbook. Once you accept its capabilities, you will like it. If you require more computing and graphics power on a tablet notebook, look into the HP TM2T series which uses CULV/Core i UM CPUs and optional discrete graphics, but at double the costs. There are certainly more "higher-end" netbooks around, like the ones with the Nvidia ION GPU and even the Alienware M11X, but these have a different focus and lack touchscreen features. You are getting the T101MT for its touchscreen feature in a netbook size, that's the bottom line.
Having said all that, the T101MT's Atom N450 runs at 1.6Ghz and is snappy for a netbook, but watching videos, it helps to run it on 1.85Ghz by using the Super Performance Mode of the ASUS S.H.E. To match the screen's resolution of 1024x600 and to alleviate the CPU's capability, it is best to watch lower resolution videos and switching it to full screen. I streamed a Simpsons episode on Hulu using 288p and running it at full screen without any lag. It will lag on 360p. But on Youtube, fullscreen 360p will not lag, anything higher will. As for videos on your hard drive, it is best to convert them to widescreen 480p. That's 720 pixels horizontal and 480 pixels vertical. Since the physical size of the screen isn't that big to begin with, you will not notice much quality difference from a 480p video to an hd video. It's also worth adding that it cannot decode 720p videos, it will stutter and chug.
Gaming
Getting this netbook brought me back some nostalgic moments. By this, I mean I dug up old copies of 2D and less intensive 3D games in storage. I installed some point and click games to take advantage of the touchscreen. This includes a bunch of Dash games for my girlfriend. We both enjoy Plants VS Zombies. I also installed games for casual gaming, like classic strategy games such as Warcraft III, Age of Empire, and even my dilapidated copy of StarCraft. Adventure games like Space Quest series, Syberia, The Longest Journey, Tales/Secret of Monkey Island and the Broken Sword series are also installed and run flawlessly. Some 2D casual, mystery, clue-finder games made by PopCap Games are fun on-the-go. There are still some gaming gems in the late 90s and early 2Ks that will run on this system. Like I said, once you accept and understand its full capabilities, this goes for any netbook, you can proceed to install the right software and have some fun.
ExpressGate
This is a nice addition for emergency internet use, in my opinion. Although it is a fast Splashtop, I generally do not use it, because Windows 7's loadtime does not bother me.

(Note - The T91MT is released in Black and White versions, I have the White Version.)
Since I've started using Ipod Touch generation 1 a couple of years back, I decided the future is all about touch screen and I told myself I would only buy mobile devices that would have access to touch screen. So I was looking forward to this netbook, as it was exactly what I've been hoping for in terms of concept and design.
Initially I was disappointed with the touch features due to lack of response, but after over a week I've started to like it. Don't get me wrong, the T91MT uses a resistive screen so it is never as responsive as the IPhone Capacitive screen but once you get used to the amount of pressure you need to apply, the T91MT response pretty well to touch commands. The main culprit of lag and unresponsiveness is the low powered CPU. I've notice while it is tablet mode, the processing power is restricted to only 800mhz. You will only get the full performance of 1.33ghz in netbook mode, this may be purposely implied to lower the system temperature in tablet. The difference in performance is very noticeable while watching online videos.
Multitouch zooming is not highly inaccurate, instead of making small smooth changes; it makes leaps that zoom from 100% to 125% or 100% to 75%, depending on the program. Some program has smooth animation between zoom to give the illusion that the zoom is more fluid. The biggest problem here is still processing power. If you are running zoom while low in processing resources you will likely to make inaccurate zoom, going over the desired zoom level due to lag.
There is a official demo video floating around on YouTube of the T91MT, this is the same video that is installed onto the netbook that shows every time you startup. It can be misleading; the video shows a different version of Touch gate that has a different background graphics. They have show very smooth animation in their software, it is unlikely the real thing will perform this well, due to once again, lack of processing power. The real thing is much choppier.
However on the positive side, the design of the netbook itself is solid and reasonably attractive, one of the big selling factor of this notebook is the small form factor and the tablet option. The netbook is very portable, I find myself getting it out during long queues like I would usually do with my Iphone. It can operate in tablet mode without going back to the keyboard, thanks to the virtual keyboard in windows 7.
The battery life is reasonable to good; it runs down quicker in full performance setting, around 3hrs, which is what I usually have it in due to the lack of processing power. I installed the extra 2GB ram memory right away; it didn't make much of a difference in terms of system performance. In addition, a lot of online videos are unwatchable or choppy. Youtube content cannot be played in HQ and depending on the video some will be choppy even in LQ mode while in tablet mode. Youtube is much more playable in netbook mode. Hulu has the same problems, more severe than Youtube since a alot of their video is in a higher quality format, Hulu is barely playable in netbook mode. Watching video's from hard drive is a different story, they play rather well, they don't suffer like those online videos.
I will also mention Asus's in-house software. The Touch Gate and Eee docking software are rather poor. In the touch gate, the online radio has a trial period and a link to Internet explorer was very unnecessary. Touchgate was designed for the XP to give them some touch screen functionality on that platform which was lacking in touch functions, but in windows 7 they are rather redundant since windows 7 was designed for touch screen. On top of this, the program itself is laggy.
Another problem I ran into is the palm rejection. The palm rejection software "Intelliwriting". It only works with sticky notes and windows journal. But this is not its only problem, this software is inaccurate, causing you to draw with your palm. It also distorts your text, making productive work very frustrating. I've turn this feature off and train myself to write without pressing my palm on the screen by using landscape mode making use of the side of the screen as a form of physical palm rejection. Updated - After a couple of weeks testing the T91MT, I can tell you that palm rejection is a lost cause. It is very difficult to write for longer than a few words on this net book, the palm rejection software distorts so badly that it is not worth turning on. A active digitalizer would've made a world of difference. Writing is only useful for making a couple of annotations.
The netbook has 2 USB ports and 2 SD/SDHC slots if you have the money, you can purchase 2 SDHC cards to increase the disk space by 64gb(2x32gb). This is kind of expensive, but does give you the option to expand without compromising portability.
The netbook is functional for reading PDF's and Amazon's Kindle. It is easier to read Amazon kindle, as that is less processing intensive. PDF magazine with lots of graphics can load slowly between pages and zooming can cause lag if you use the tablet mode, due to the reduced clock speed. I've learnt to use the pdf software's internal function to change screen orientation rather than using the netbook's function, that way you will scroll your books from the side like they are naturally. Another interesting fact is the notebook fits very well on the standard book holder at your local gym, so you've the option of working out while reading your pdf books or watching a movie on your netbook.
I've installed Photoshop CS4, Illustrator CS4, ArtRage and Corel Painter 11. Photoshop works surprisingly well despise the low processing powers. Applying filters only took a few seconds. Photoshop demanded much less power than I had imagined it would.
There was initially a problem with the drawing tools on all these programs, they would not perform short strokes and sometimes would not draw at all. After some tweaking with settings, I worked out that this problem was caused by touch gestures sending both commands for drawing and moving the canvas at the same time, which confused the software. To fix this, I disabled "Single Finger Panning" under "Pen and Touch" control panel, this solve much of the drawing problems.
In conclusion, this device is not bad but could've been much better with more power. The touch screen function gets more responsive as you get used to it. The portable format lets the user to work anywhere. It works very well as a portable tablet. However the palm rejection is a lost cause, realistically you cannot do any kind of productive handwriting on this netbook, this netbook desperately needed a active digitalizer. The other main let down of this netbook is the processing power. The overall lag caused by this is discomforting, if Asus had put in a high powered cpu and gfx, this would be a award winning product. Note that your processing power will be lowered in tablet mode(800mhz), you can however work around this by putting your netbook to sleep during netbook/laptop mode then change to tablet mode while it is powered off. Once you repower on you will keep the same clock speed as the laptop mode(1333mhz), but this may cause heating problems.
I was initially very angry with this netbook, as Asus make a deceiving marketing video giving false expectation of the netbook, but as time went on this netbook grew on me. It makes a nice toy for reading and watching movies on the move, it is a cross between a iphone and a netbook. But as a first generation touchscreen netbook, it is not much of a productive tool in it's current form.
