As others have noted this is a quality board. As a several time Asus user, I expect that, but this board is a step above. Chipset heat sink (with fan you can apply if you are setting it up the right way), connectors (SATA, etc) that are in the right spaces for case usage, etc. A few quibbles 1) as I note there is no floppy cable included (even though the board has a floppy connection), 2) (not sure this is Asus' fault, but...) why is there so little space between the PCI connectors for these double slot vid cards? I've got a EVGA 285 that is hogging two slots but is only connected to one. If I had it set up in SLI, I'd only have *1* PCI slot left over. I guess the price you pay for the cool heat sinks around the board.
Still very satisfied with the purchase.
Update 9/9 - wanted to add that I got everything fully functional and for once even the powering down stuff works as it should. A couple of other nits - 1)it is either RAID or straight SATA. This is noted in the forum boards and what not, but is a bit of a pain; and 2) the e-SATA isn't hot plug.
Still very satisfied with the purchase. Runs well you can tweak the heck out of it and it has all the right connections.

Here in California my ambient temps get hotter than preferred in the Gaming world and having a northbridge blow down directly on my GPU does not help me keep those big ovens cool.
Why cant EVGA figure out a way to vent it outside of the case?

I have been using this board for a week now. The board is using dual Xeon 5120 processors that have been overclocked to 2.33Ghz from 1.86Ghz using the BSEL mod (a simple piece of nonconductive tape placed over one of the chip pins).
Please note that you will not get the full memory bandwidth available on this board until you fill the board with at least four sticks of FB-DIMM's.
The board, using the Xeon 5120's at their normal operating speed, has a combined processing power greater than that of a 3.4Ghz Xeon Irwindale dual cpu motherboard. I tested this using Sisoft Sandra 2007.
I was able to mount the board into an Aluminus ATX form factor case with no modifications.

I was curious about EVGA brand, so this build use this mobo, and GTX465 video card,
at first, not too impressed by the mobo's finishing quality, some parts soldered slantly,
board feels thin, in comparing other Asus mobo,
but after the build, and installed Windows 7, it performs rock solid and reliable,
called EVGA's customer service to ask some questions, I could get hold of a person in reasonably
short time, they are very courteous and helpful.
So my 1st impression with EVGA is good, I would not hesitate to buy their other product from now on.

I love this processor, 4 cores really does make a difference. Yes, newer chips are already on the horizon, and you might be able to wait until this chip is much cheaper, but for the moment, even at the price its at.. this chip is well worth the money.
One of the reasons is that its an unlocked chip. You can overclock this to whatever specs you want, and it will not complain. Of course, the trick is to get the overclock USABLE and STABLE. That requires some thought and knowledge.. or a motherboard that has built in overclock profiles like the Asus Workstation Pro series of motherboards. Plus, it requires a GOOD COOLER.
This chip runs HOT. Its "failure temperature" is reported to be 212F / 100C, but I would be more conservative and say that if you start hitting 70C on this chip you need to re-evaluate your cooling. Another thing to note - the cooler that comes with the chip? TRASH. Well, let me qualify that statement a bit. The stock cooler *WILL* cool this chip to usable temperatures, if a) you do not overclock it at all b) have a very good airflow system and c) do not intend to do anything really heavy.
The last part there - "do not intend on doing anything really heavy" rather defeats the purpose of having a quadcore. You can surf and write documents on a Pentium M chip if that's all you need to do. This chip is meant to WORK, and WORK HARD. So, with that in mind, the stock cooler is not to be considered when you buy this chip. You HAVE to buy a better cooler and I would say it is also important (if not essential) to buy an aftermarket thermal paste like an Artic Silver or Arctic Cooling MX-1. Do not skimp on this, and it will reward you well.
For overlocking into 3.8ghz and upwards to 4GHZ you will need a very good water cooler. For overclocks to 3.4ghz, air cooling will do, as long as you buy one of the serious coolers such as the Zalman, Scythe, Tuniq, Vigor or Ultra. I myself use the Ultra Chilltec and it works marvelously - I would recommend the use of a TEC cooler if possible, though from what I have read the Tuniq Tower 120 stacks up well for half the price of a TEC (a TEC is a Thermoelectric cooler that uses the Peltier effect to draw heat out from a surface. Its use in a CPU cooler requires a modulator unit, which all the TEC coolers on the market now have. While not as efficient as water cooling, TEC units give an air cooler that extra push that enables stable overclocks to 3.4ghz to even 3.8ghz).
As other reviews have said - the X6800 is a faster chip for games. If all you wanna do is play games, save yourself money.. and get yourself a better value for money for gaming.
If you do any rendering, however (video, 3D, folding@home, etc) then this chip (especially overclocked, this chip begs to be overclocked) will smoke the X6800. Perhaps not a good example, because its not the same chip, but an example.. I had an AMD 4200+ dualcore and renders in Lightwave for one scene I had were like 15 MINUTES a frame. With this chip, overclocked to 3.2ghz, and 16 threads active, my times dropped to 2 (count 'em, TWO) Minutes a frame!

I've been building a number of systems lately, and needed to put together a few of my own too. So in addition to building several servers based on newer Xeon chips, I also have had the pleasure of building two core 2 quad systems recently.
Intel's entire lineup of new chips have some real positives. The Intel Core 2 Quad Q9450 Quad-Core Processor, 2.66 GHz, 12M L2 Cache, 1333MHz FSB, LGA775 is a great chip in particular that offers you some of the benefits of a server CPU at a home PC price point. It's also very compatible with the types of boards and set-ups that most gamers or heavy application users (read Photoshop :) ) will want in their rigs.
Like the Xeon Quad-core - X3350, the 9450 also gives you the 12 MB of L2 Cache, which is the largest easily available through retail channels and 50% larger than the 6600. True, for $200 you can get the Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 here on Amazon. It has a very similar clock speed (easily over-clocked) and a respectable 8 MB of L2 cache, which is nothing to sneeze at. Like I said, I used that guy in my personal box, but I did find that it was possible to locate the 9450 at a similar price. So while Amazon's price does vary, if you do your research you can get the larger cache and slightly faster clock speed of the 9450 for the same price as the 6600.
People building a home server that is pulling multiple duties or running multi-threading apps like Adobe Photoshop CS3 will benefit from the extra cores. Not to mention, if you have gotten away from 32 bit OS and moved to 64 bit (Either Vista x64, Linux, Solaris, Suse, or another one) you will definitely be able to squeeze some extra juice out of the extra hardware.
Unlike the Xeon, this guy isn't compatible with the 3200 board architecture that gives you ECC DDR2 800 ram and some other extras. So while that makes the Xeon better for server specific applications, the 9450 is definitely comparable in performance for all other functions.
The LGA775 architecture is somewhat standard for Intel's core-2 quads. You get support for a 1333 FSB. Once again, with a 64 bit OS you get to take advantage of much more RAM too.
If you are a home user or are building a workstation, it may make sense to go down to the Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600. But if you have a system running processor intensive functions, the extra cache of the 9450 can come in handy. Similarly, if you do your homework you can get it for about what the 6600 will set you back.

Ok, this CPU is best right now in the market, 3.2Ghz but only 2MB cache. The good thing is this can be compete with E6750 from Intel and best Dual Core right now in the market in my opinion. If you want this CPU to run in low temp. you going to need some kind special CPU cooler not stock heatsink because it run 10oC higher than other series like x2 4200+(at 31oC with special heatsink)

This CPU is extraordinarily fast and runs fabulously, but the active heatsink that it is packaged with is terrible. It would not screw down properly onto the motherboard mounting apparatus resulting in poor heat conductivity. As a result I was forced to purchase a supermicro product (SNK-P0020A4), which worked fabulously.

I upgraded to this processor from a Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 3.0 GHz 6M L2 Cache 1333MHz FSB LGA775 Dual-Core Processor. This processor is an amazing upgrade. I recommend the RAM for this processor Corsair TR3X6G1333C9 XMS3 6 GB 3 x 2 GB PC3-10666 1333MHz 240-Pin DDR3 Core i7 Memory Kit. This is one serious processor, the cost in my opinion is totally worth it. Just like all black box Intel processors this one is for serious gaming/ video editing. There are several Intel Core i7 processors out there that are more moderate and significantly less costly. You will see amazing boot times and access times that are really short. Games have no stutters or any significant lag.
I got a 3D Mark Vantage score of around 19,000 amazing!

If you're looking high-performance CPU that is also energy efficient and doesn't cost an arm and a leg then look no further.

The i7 860 has all the horsepower you'll need for fast picture editing and even editing AVCHD videos. For light duty task like web browsing it consumes just 65 Watts! When it really kicks in high gear for serious number crunching it goes to 110 Watts. This is the result of Intel's Turbo technology that can turn off cores that are not in use. Plus if you give it a really good cooling system it can even drive the clock rate up to the thermal limit. This ability to save power is so important as it translates into less electricity, less wasted heat and noise and increased reliability. For me this was ideal since I wanted a computer that was super quiet when running basics tasks but had the muscle for demanding applications when needed.
This is a great CPU that will can handle anything you can through at it and won't be obsolete in a few years.

This is one of the best MOBOs in the market. The feature that I like the most is the full cover heatsink... It looks great!...
After spending a lot of hours looking for the best MOBO for my new system the P6T7 was my pick for many reasons... Some of them are:
1. Looks. It has a very attractive layout.
2. Stability. What's the use to spend in a ultra-super-mega MOBO if you're gonna have at least 2 BSOD a day?!?... With the P6T7 you can be relax.
3. Features. I love that it have a third USB internal connector and have SAS support. SSDs are still expensive and don't have great capacity but using a SAS 15k RPM HDD you can have a bit more performance than with the 10k RPM HDD. The software included in the cd is great too.
The only con is that you need to upgrade the bios to the latest version if you pretend to use the new Intel 980x cpu.
Now... For the overclocking part... I was pretty easy, the only thing I did was increase the multipliers to 31 and the Vcore to 1.34 and thats it... Regarding the memory I'm using the Corsair Dominator 1600mhz (not a GT model) and the only thing I did was to set the XMP profile and that's all... Using programs like Everest you can do a stability test on your system and for me it was rock solid stable...
If you are looking for a watercooling solution for the MOBO I suggest the Koolance waterblock.
BTW... Don't be confused by the CEB form factor.. It fits perfectly in my Coolermaster Cosmos 1000...

Question is, can you get something nearly as good for much less? Indeed, it's possible.
Contrary to popular belief, CPU chip fabrication is really an imprecise art, and manufacturing perfection cannot be found in this industry. The same series of chips, in this case the i7 900 series, are all manufactured from the same wafer. Whether or not they get the extreme designation and specified number is based on testing done on each chip after the fabrication process is complete. However not every chip is tested for a specific range in the series (e.g. 975).
Like any company, Intel has manufacturing quotas, so a certain number of 975s have to be produced each month, but beyond that, they don't run the harder tests involved with the 975s. So in reality, you could technically get a 965 or a 975 in the 950 mix, assuming all quotas were met for any chips above 950 in that particular month of fabrication. The main reason for this is due to the limited demand on the 965s and 975s. In the end, it's more-or-less the luck of the draw.
Technically, this means you could by chance end up with a 920 that matches the quality of a 950 or higher. However, the chances are more likely that you could get a 975-quality from a 950 batch, since both would come from the same vicinity on the wafer (that vicinity being the area that consistently yields the best chips) whereas the 920s are coming from a known lesser-quality area of the wafer. The 920s typically are the bottom of the barrel in the series.
So if you're absolutely picky and you must have top-of-the-line equipment, definitely go with the 975 or one of the other extreme edition CPUs, because you're guaranteed to receive a chip of the highest quality (assuming you can afford it).
However, if price is any concern at all, but absolute top performance is certainly not an issue, go with a 950 (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002A6G3V2?tag=a52-20&ie=UTF8) and take your chances on getting something better, especially if you're considering overclocking. It really all depends on your cooling solution, settings and the chances of drawing something better than the label suggests, but from what I've seen the chances are actually pretty decent.
I've benchmarked the 975, 965 and 950, all overclocked. The 975 ran only 1.8% faster than the 950, but the 950 ran even better than the "extreme" 965. In the end, I was certainly satisfied with the results of the 950 for the price. For anyone on the fence with price vs performance, you certainly won't be dissatisfied with the 950. Even if you have the extra cash to plop down on the 975, save your money and get an SSD with the extra cash flow. That's where the real bottleneck is in computing these days, and you shouldn't ever run such a top-of-the-line system without having a high-speed hard drive!

This is a quality product. It's packaged well, it installs easily and it works flawlessly. The included thermal solution (heatsink and fan assembly) fits well and keeps the CPU temperature nice and low without making fan noise. The heatsink has factory pre-installed thermal compound, so you don't need any "heatsink grease" during installation.
A few "facts" about this (and other Intel Core 2 Quad) processors:
* Performance speed is better, but not a LOT better than a dual core. This is because most Windows programs only use one core anyway.
* Programs that are written for a multi CPU system (such as Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Lightroom) will be screaming fast when run on this chip.
* A quad core CPU is actually 2 dual cores in one package.
* This CPU is "locked" (it cannot have it's clock multiplier changed for "overclocking").
* To get an "unlocked" CPU, you must buy a $1000+ "Quad Core Extreme" chip (i.e. a QX6700).
* This CPU is not supported by older motherboards. MAKE SURE you have the right board AND BIOS updates to support quad core before buying this.
* LINUX users will LOVE this chip, since Linux smoothly uses all 4 cpu's.
* This chip supports "AMD-64" mode - meaning it will run XP and Vista 64 bit editions, as well as Linux AMD-64 edition.

In short, the i7 970 is the 980x's little brother...and it tries hard to emulate the 980x's traits.
Where it does well is performance per watt; if your workload involves heavy usage of multi-threaded application, this processor is a god send.
Compared to my i7 920 @ 4GHz, this processor was at minimum 40% faster in rendering, encoding, and compression tasks.
In games I did not notice an appreciable gain.
I was able to overclock this CPU to 4GHz and my temps peak around 78-84 degrees C using a Prolimatech Megahalems.
The one flaw in the 970's emulation of the 980 is with regards to pricing; the 980x is $100 more, and having the unlocked multiplier makes that a better value.
All in all, this is a great product...six blazing fast cores!

It's my first build and coming from a Pentium 4 3.4 ghz in my Dell to this processor is simply amazing. I can now play Oblivion and L4D in the settings I want! Everything else it pretty much cuts through it like butter. It get a Windows 7 WEI of 7.6 3dmark Vantage CPU score P42500+ and I have it overclocked to 3.67 with blck of 184 vcore 1.225 with vdroop. Coupled with a Cooler Master V8 it's prime 95 stable (small ffts - 2 hours, large - 2 hours, blend - 9 hours) and LinX stable (max memory 10 runs) 75 degrees C max. Ambient 80 F

Other thoughts:
If you are new to overclocking like I was here are some simple steps for a modest overclock:
WARNING: It is entirely possible to burn your CPU! Don't go crazy and set a high base clock from the start. Follow the steps!
1) download Realtemp.exe, cpu-z, prime 95, and LinX (google em)
2) go into your bios and increase the base clock by 5 (or 10 if impatient but remember my warning)
3) Load Windows and breath a sigh of relief if it does. But thats only 1/5 of the battle.
4) Run CPU-z to verify your overclock, close it then run realtemp.
5) Run LinX max memory, 3 runs. If it blue screens, restarts or errors then you've gone too far and you need to dial it down to keep your machine stable. Your last setting is your max overclock without adding vcore (cpu voltage).
6) If it passes with no errors and your max temps aren't above 85 C (some people use 80) then you're good, and you can add more base clock.
7) Go back to step 2 rinse and repeat.
8)Once you get to a speed you're happy with and it passes LinX, and is below 85 C, run prime 95 stress test for at least 6 hours of blend, 2 hours of small ffts, and 2 hours of large ffts. If it survives that then you're good for gaming and most everyday apps. If it survives p95 blend for 24 hours (no errors, < 85 C) then you're rock stable ready for mission critical or server work.
You can run Linx for more passes or folding@home SMP for further stability testing.
Finally don't expect much if you're using the heatsink that came with the processor.

BTW my motherboard is the EVGA X58 vanilla. The folks at the forums in their website are the most helpful and supportive folks you can find. Really thats the stuff that money can't buy, I strongly recommend their motherboards just for that. They have guides for more serious overclocks and guides explaining voltages, guides on optimizing Vista etc.
