(More customer reviews)Canon's 70mm-300mm is a good amateur lense. In the mid-ranges it creates sharp images with little distortion. Its light weight makes it ideal for vacations and longer shoots. In good light it offers fast focusing with exceptional clarity, even at longer focal lengths. Further, if the majority of your work is going to involve the use of a tripod, the 70-300 may be the perfect choice. Indeed, if you are looking for a good daylight zoom lense, this will meet the needs of most casual amateurs.
You already know that this is not a fast lense. Even in heavy shadows you may need to use speeds that are not conducive with handheld shots. Additionally, if you are a wildlife or sports photographer the lower speeds that are necessitated by the slowness of the lense might be problematic. Further, in shadows the lense does not focus quickly (five second delays are not uncommon), which has caused me to lose many shots.
That said, given that the next steps are the Canon 70mm-200mm 2.8, which has clarity issues and is $1,000 more, or the professional prime lenses (with their mega price tags), this is probably the best telephoto option that Canon offers casual amateur photographers.
