HP Touchsmart 310-1033 Review

I have the very similar HP TouchSmart 310-1020 All-in-One Desktop PC - Black and surprisingly love it.
I wasn't planning to replace my dead laptop with a desktop all-in-one, but this machine was priced at $599 at Staples as a closeout, so it made it easier to decide. Ironically my computer tech guy recommended a Touchsmart 300 to me for a potential computer because I like entertainment style computers for what I do. At first, I thought the Touchsmart wouldn't be quite right for me until I started using it. I was wrong and he was right.
I love the sharp screen and the extra wide size because I look at a computer all day for work. Videos and photos look gorgeous on this screen. These speakers hands down beat the Harman Kardon speakers on my old HP Entertainment laptop. I can get audio to play louder with excellent sound. I listen to Pandora or watch Hulu videos or Netflix while I cook. It's made the computer into a much more well-rounded experience--and this is after almost 15 years of working using a computer. I really love it!
I'm still using the mouse more than touching the screen. But I like having the screen touch when I want it. I was concerned about bloaty HP pre-installed programs and that has been less of an issue than expected. The only thing that didn't work was logging into Netflix through the HP app installed on the machine. I called Netflix because I had problems getting videos to play in a browser. It was a simple fix. He said ignore the HP Netflix app and just use Netflix through the browser instead. No big deal. I was able to use the Hulu app and log in through the HP app just fine.
What I lost in portability with the laptop, I gained in more functionality and a better experience while on the computer. I recommend the 310 Touchsmart whole-heartedly.
BTW, I looked at the Dell Inspiron One iO2305-2545-MSL Desktop Computer (Mercury Silver) which was $699 at Staples. It's huge and in the display the Dell screen was even better than the HP. I considered buying it, but after reading reviews, I heard the Dell was slow and had some problems. Sure enough, when I went to buy the HP, a brand new Dell 600 was on the tech guy's desk with freezing problems. He said he couldn't find a problem yet. So I'm glad I opted for this model instead!

HP TouchSmart 300-1125 All-in-One PC (Black) Review

I just purchased this computer from Amazon and received it quickly. The computer itself is surprisingly solid (and heavy), but also very slim and visually appealing. It's a very sleek looking computer. Think of it looking like a black Mac computer. The speakers are on the front of the computer and there's a webcam at the top. Now, about the touch screen: It's amazing! Although I've used touchscreens with XP before, it never seemed to be very smooth. Windows 7 is the first operating system use a native touch screen feature and it works very well. You can navigate around the screen like an ipad. So for those of you accustomed to zooming in and out, scrolling and clicking, this works very much like those. This feature is particularly nice when looking at pictures of reading news articles online. It's neat to scroll through pictures with your fingers and you can rotate the pictures too. Your computer instantly becomes a good ereader. I have a tendency to stand at my computer (so I am not sitting all day) and this computer works well to accommodate that too.
There's very little to set up for the first time and it's VERY easy. There are no cables! The only cable is for the ac and if you're like me, a wired ethernet connection (but this computer does have wireless b/g/n.
It's nice that HP includes the sleek, black, wireless mouse/keyboard to use. When you want to use them for the first time, just pull out the battery paper and press connect. Mine connected instantly. The keyboard keys are about as soft as a laptop's.
Microsoft (and computer companies) have tried desperately for years to make a computer seem like an entertainment device for use in the living room or kitchen, which is a contrast to the dull office and business-like settings that many computers are used for. For the first time, I feel like this computer actually would be complementary to the living room or kitchen and it would perform well there too. This has a built in tuner (though I haven't tried it yet) and HP advertises it as being friendly for reading recipes (there are even recipe apps). I never liked Vista much and Seven is very easy to navigate. I have not transferred files from my XP computer yet, so I'll report back when that it is accomplished.
I played sample video on the computer and a dvd and both look smooth and flawless. I tried to bog down the computer with running many things at once and it continued to work fine.
It is an energy star certified computer and after being on for a few hours already, the computer has almost no heat coming from the screen.
The only thing (so far) that I would like HP to have included would have been the wall mount. You can buy it separately on Amazon Wall Mount Adapter for Ts Vesa. Although it's on my desk, for standing up so much, I am thinking that it might be better if it were mounted on the wall a few inches higher than it is. My main critique so far is that HP should have made the whole screen height adjustable. It's not. It just sits at the same height. This should be a consideration for you if you buy a touchscreen, because as nice as it is, the touch screen will not be used if you sit far from the computer or it's at a strange height. Even though it's nice that the computer doesn't come loaded with lots of junk software that will expire in a month or so, I wish it had come with a trial of Microsoft Office or something. Until I install Office, I can't even open up a Word document in my email. The other option for buying Office is using Open Office [openoffice dot org], which is like Microsoft Office, but free (and it's legal too). It comes loaded with 30 [CORRECTION 60 ]days of Norton antivirus.
UPDATE: 8/23/10
I have been using this more and the more I use it, the more I like it. You have to practice a little bit with the touch feature to get accurate, but there is a way to change the setting, so you can make it "looser" and you don't have to be extremely precise in order to click on boxes, buttons, tabs, etc.
Windows Media Center: This integrates nicely with this computer (I hesitate to say machine since it's so elegant). A remote control is included and it works very nicely. It looks like a regular tv remote, but you can easily go through all your music, albums, etc, using it.
The only other downside I can see so far with this all in one (and others too) is that it's a little harder to upgrade it and/or repair it. However, this machine has 4gb of ram and it can be upgraded to 8gb. But except for that, you really can't upgrade it. I don't need a BluRay player, but it would have been nice for the drive to be one, so I'm prepared for the future. But I'm sure a year from now external bluray players will be relatively inexpensive. Since it's an HD screen, it does look very clear.
I also would like it to have an hdmi connection. It does include a tv tuner though.
UPDATE: 8/26/10
My worst nightmare for this computer has come true. Its speakers stopped working today! After speaking with HP (who had good/helpful tech support), it was determined that there is a hardware issue with my computer and...mine needs to be returned. Obviously, if speakers were not built into the monitor, it would be easy to replace the speakers, but not in this case. It's also true, that this is a very minor issue (in comparison to it have a serious problem); it's important enough though that for a computer that is less than a month old it should not be having. With the issue only being speakers, my belief in HP has not been shattered (yet), since this is my first HP computer (previous ones Dell/Toshiba). I mentioned earlier in the review that it's convenient for space to have an all in one, but if even ONE problem happens (bad speakers for example), then the whole computer needs to be fixed/taken in to be fixed. The more modular parts are then it's easier to fix. For example, it's convenient on a netbook if you have an external dvd drive and the drive breaks because you can just replace the drive and not the whole computer.
With that said, I am sad that this needs to be returned and I am thinking that I will probably give it another go and try the same computer again. I will need to contemplate it further, since these kinds of events can happen at random and I may have just been the person to have it.
With this current problem, I dropped my rating from five to four stars.
UPDATE: 8/29/10
I am happy to say that just as I was on the verge of returning this computer to Amazon, the speakers are now working again! I don't know what happened. I spoke to HP for some time the other day and they took over my computer remotely and it didn't work then either. They checked to be sure it wasn't muted and that the drivers and everything were updated. I have no idea. So I'm happy it's working again. It's unfortunate it is working after I deleted everything on it! Here's the easy way though to transfer everything from your XP computer to windows 7: just buy an external hard drive (I loved my seagate) and save everything on it. Plug it your windows 7 computer and install the backup software from the hard drive. Then just go into your hard drive and literally copy everything in it (just highlight My Documents and all the music/pics in it). When Windows 7 is transferring it to your new computer it will ask if you want the pictures to be put into Documents (which is the new name for My Documents) and Pictures (which is now separate from My Pictures which were part of My Documents before). Within twenty minutes, my whole 100 gb hard drive was transferred (might have been less time than that).
UPDATE: 9/23/10
The computer weighs around 22-25 pounds, so it's not a lightweight little thing. There are two usb ports on the right side and a memory card reader on the left. The card reader works great for quickly uploading pics. The screen is solid and some kind of plastic. So it's not soft like an lcd screen, but it's not glass either. The computer comes with a remote (which looks like a tv remote) and it's surprisingly nice to use. When using Windows media player, you can scroll through all of your albums, artists, etc., using the remote. The remote does not appear to work much for anything else (except Media Player). However, you can use it to adjust volume, which is handy if you're across the room or you use your computer as your main music player. You don't need another additional one from another company and install it since it's nice it's included here. One REALLY nice feature I like when using my computer though is to turn off the screen with the remote. Whenever you want to put the computer to sleep, just press power on the remote and the screen goes off instantly. When you move the mouse, the screen will come back on instantly too.
I have learned that there are certain things which are really nice for touching the screen with and other times it's less necessary. For example, when typing a document it's not practical to keep your hands on the keyboard and then lift them up to go to file, print, etc. However, touching the screen is very nice for visual activities, such as scrolling through your pictures, or looking for a file. It's also nice to use the the electronic keyboard that comes up on the screen (it sits on the side of the screen unobtrusively) and if you need to enter some numbers (say credit card numbers) it's easy to hold your card up to the screen and just type on the keyboard on the screen. There's no looking up and down at the keyboard for numbers or anything. I find it's easier to do this than just memorizing the physical keyboard's numbers (as I previously used). The touch screen feature is very accurate and you can adjust the sensitivity.
If you are considering the value of the touch screen feature, I recommend that you go to a store and see if you might like it or not.
I will update this review as I use this more.

This computer is working well. I was skeptical about buying it, since my laptop was not even a year old, but I'm glad I made the change. It's very fast - almost instant on. The Touchsmart feature is not too practical. The 22" screen is more comfortable several feet away. Can't reach the screen, so I optimized it for the mouse. I did look at the Touchsmart software and found it of little interest. The large screen is very practical for my needs, though. I have plenty of table space right in front of me, rather than filling it with computer.
The cordless keyboard works very well. Lot of times the cordless equipment doesn't keep up with my typing. Love the larger delete key. The mouse is a bit stiff, but it operates mouse-intensive games fine.
All my software and wireless printer set up easily, as did internet connections. The little cover on the ports is a bit difficult to remove and replace. The shiny finish is quite a dust enhancer. Somewhere the black frame got scratched at the bottom of the screen right in the middle.
I like the HP Pocket Media plug-in backup drives. The HP website shows the drive as an accessory to the 500 series Touchsmart. I phoned their sales people twice to ask about drive capacity and where the drive was inserted into this unit, and both confirmed the PC had a slot in the top, so I ordered the 500gb drive from HP at the same time I ordered the PC from Amz. PC arrived, and there is no slot. Another call to HP revealed that only the 800 series accommodates this drive. So I have to attach it via USB. The whole idea of the Pocket Media is that they slide right into their own slots in the PCs for which they are made. I found it interesting that both the people and the website at HP were sloppy about this accessory. HP is very generous about returns, but I wanted the larger capacity drive, so I kept it. By the way, this is the second HP computer I've had for which these plug-in drives were misrepresented on their website. First time it happened, a couple computers ago, I could not get anybody to acknowledge the error and correct the site.

The Basics
Processor: The Intel Core 2 Duo T6600 processor has a 2.2 GHz processor speed, fast 800 MHz front-side bus (FSB), and 2 MB L2 cache. (An L2, or secondary, cache temporarily stores data; and a larger L2 cache can help speed up your system's performance. The FSB carries data between the CPU and RAM, and a faster front-side bus will deliver better overall performance.)
With two computational execution cores in a single processor, it provides greater system response when running multi-threaded applications simultaneously with no significant increase in power consumption. It's optimized for multitasking and is ready to support the Microsoft Windows Vista operating system. It can simultaneously run multiple demanding applications--such as graphics-intensive games or serious number-crunching business productivity applications--while downloading music or running virus-scanning security programs in the background. Some of the advanced Intel innovations of the Core 2 Duo processor include:
Smart Memory Access: Improves system performance by hiding memory latency, thus optimizing the use of available computer data bandwidth to provide data to the processor when and where it is needed.
Advanced Digital Media Boost: Effectively doubles the execution speed for instructions used widely in multimedia and graphics applications.
Dynamic Power Coordination: Coordinates Enhanced Intel SpeedStep Technology and idle power-management state (C-states) transitions independently per core to help save power.
Deeper Sleep with Dynamic Cache Sizing: Saves power by flushing cache data to system memory during periods of inactivity to lower CPU voltage.

Hard Drive: The 640 GB Serial ATA hard drive (7200 RPM) provides more than enough space for storing all your photos and home movies, your digital audio library, and downloaded movies and TV shows. This SATA hard drive also quickens the pace with a higher speed transfer of data--akin to Firewire and USB 2.0.

Memory: The 4 GB of installed RAM (PC6400, 2 x 2 GB) helps boost the amount of available video RAM that's shared with this desktop's video card. It also offers a fast 800 MHz speed and an amazing 8 GB maximum RAM capacity (4 x 2 GB). To receive the faster data transfer benefits of the dual-channel DDR2 RAM, any RAM additions require memory modules of same capacity and clockspeed.

DVD/CD Drive: This multiformat DVD/CD drive is compatible with writing both DVD+ and DVD- disc formats as well as dual-layer (DL) DVD+/-R discs, which can store up to 8.5 GB of data. It features 6x DVD±R DL Write Once, 8x DVD+R, 8x DVD+RW, 8x DVD-R, 6x DVD-RW, 16x DVD-ROM, 24x CD-R, 24x CD-RW, and 40x CD-ROM speeds.

Keyboard & Mouse: This TouchSmart PC comes with an HP low-profile Wireless Keyboard with numeric keypad as well as an HP Wireless laser mouse.
Screen, Video & Audio The touch-enabled 22-inch widescreen BrightView LCD offers height/tilt adjustment for optimal viewing. It offers a native resolution of 1440 x 900 pixels. Video is powered by the Nvidia GeForce 9300M GS graphics/video card, which provides 256 MB of dedicated video RAM and offers up to 2010 MB of total available graphics memory as allocated by Windows Vista. Enabled by PureVideo HD, movies come to life with outstanding picture clarity, ultra-smooth video and vivid color. The lifelike images have up to six times the detail of standard DVD movies. Delivering state-of-the-art graphics performance, GeForce 9300M GS graphics card is sure to give you the power and performance you crave to play the hottest DirectX 9 and DirectX 10 titles. Its 16x full-screen antialiasing technology delivers superior quality along with astounding performance and since it's optimized for Windows Vista. I bought this 12.1" HP Tablet to replace my 10.1 HP Mini. Apparently all HP Mini's come with Windows 7 Starter and although the size was great, movies just werent that great on it and it couldnt handle my downloads among other things. This computer is only 2" bigger and it has the Windows 7 Home Premium edition which is a really great program, also window 7 has extra features that work with this and they are super cool touch type programs. I heard the screens get lose after a year or so, so I am watching for that and transporting it closed as HP recommends. I got a screen protecter but it hasnt showed up yet so Ive used the touch screen and it works using a finger or pen and is very sensative. Its solid and smooth so it doesnt seem to scratch easy. Just keep it clean because dirt will scratch it. The screen is top heavy but it is touch and requires more wiring so that should be expected. If you put it on your lap, you should probably just use it as a tablet so it doesnt fall. I love this computer. It is amazing and gets all the attention from my co-workers.

First I should mention that I only use this laptop for about two weeks, and this is my first tablet PC. So be cautioned for my unintended bias.
Pros:
1. the price. You cannot find other tablets on the market with similar specs (e.g., cpu, HD, and ram) at this price range. Tablets from Lenovo or Dell would cost you double.
2. The cpu (i3-ulv) seems to be (or more than) powerful enough for most applications. I don't play computer games, but I do lots of cpu-demanding scientific computing. It turns our that this machine works pretty well, and the response is quick.
3. The metallic design looks modern and cool; the build quility is great.
4. Good battery life. I think it can run for 5, 6 hrs on battery (but I should confess that the estimate comes from one of the windows 7 desktop gadgets; i haven't empirically tested it myself).
Cons:
1. Maybe it's because of the 7200 rps HD, I can sense a constant vibration when I lay my palm on it while typing.
2. The static from the HD and fan (or something else?) can become a little too noticable in a quiet environment.
3. The air blown out of the vent can get warm under high CPU utilization. Right now it's not bothering me at all, but if I switched the cpu to i5 then the heat might be a point of concern.
4. The useable screen area is actully one inch less than the proclaimed 12.1".
5. The laptop is preloaded with too many bloatwares.
But overall this is a great tablet at an affordable price. Highly recommended.

I bought this computer for the very specific purpose of being a secondary computer that also had an HDMI in so I could use it as second monitor or hook up to ps3 etc... There are not many all in one touch screens for this price that have an hdmi in and have a better cpu than an atom. If you can get it around 600 with rebate it's not a bad deal. Windows experience rating is 4.7 based on the cpu, everything else on the machine scores 5 or higher. However, this machine is not fast. It is much faster than a netbook, can play full screen high def hulu, youtube no problem. Don't expect it to do too much and you will be happy. It can run office, surf the web, and listen to music but thats about the max for multi tasking because of the 2gb of ram, 4 would have helped quite a bit I think.
It does actually run Left 4 Dead 2 at 720p with all settings on medium really well. So I would use that as your benchmark for gaming. Again this computer is quite capable of day to day tasks but does slow down once in a while and is definitely lacking in the cpu department.
Build quality is ok, the case made some typical plastic creeks when I moved it around but it is a desktop so that shouldn't be too much of an issue. The touchscreen works great. I have also used an hp touchsmart and I would say the asus screen is a little more accurate (although it is the same optical touch technology). The viewing angles on the monitor are not very good but are acceptable at this price level. I have not used the keyboard and mouse that it came with so can't comment on those.
I would say my biggest complains with the system are:
1: The speakers suck. It is a very thin and light all in one, but the speakers are on par with a small laptop.
2: Monitor viewing angles. I know its a cheap unit but its meant to be used at off angle viewing (standing above it in the kitchen etc...). Would have been nice to include higher quality display.
3. Glossy screen. What isn't these days though.
4: CPU not overclockable. I know this is not a common feature but the cpu runs at very low power and heat levels, I think it could easily be pushed a little harder and it would definitely help performance.
Overall I would rate it 3.5 out of 5 (if amazon let me) which is not a bad score. If you keep your expectations reasonable this is a very capable touchscreen all in one at a good price.

In general, I love it but nothing's perfect. Before this I had the HP T2z which is the predecessor of the TM2 series. I've had it for a couple weeks now and thought I'd share my opinion.
Pros:
- FN keys are first laptop functions then F keys: I love this feature. I very rarely use function keys but I do use the volume / brightness / WLAN keys a lot. This new keyboard layout makes the function keys laptop functions by default. You have to hit the FN key to use F11, for example. But the wireless on/off is a touch away.
- Screen flips both ways: the T2z could only rotate one way. This goes both.
- Long lasting battery: with the wireless off and the screen half bright I've gotten 6+ hours out of the battery.
- Light: nice to have the weight down. Who wants to carry extra pounds?
Cons:
- No home, end, pg dn, pg up keys: The new keyboard has it's downside... I use the home end keys a lot, or used to at least. Since we're talking about the keyboard, I don't like the feeling. It's got that clakety-clak feeling of the old keyboards. You feel like you have to be rough with it for the keys to work. It's not very sensitive either.
- Fingerprint reader on side of screen: this is a horrible design flaw IMHO. Is your screen ever in EXACTLY the same angle? Well think of trying to do a straight line on a tilted screen. Or better yet, think of trying that 4-5 times to get a proper reading.
- Eraser in onenote: I love the new pen with an eraser. However, Onenote doesn't like to recognize it as an eraser. Not HPs fault I guess, but I bought the tablet to use with onenote.
- Touchpad: it's got the new touchpad that had the built in buttons like a mac. Not to keen on it.
- No DVD drive: this could be a pro or a con. Depends on how you see it. I very rarely use my drive, but for that 10% of the time, it is VERY necessary. However, it's weight and battery for something I use only rarely.
So, there you have it. Would I buy another one? Most definitely. I love my touchpad PC.

First Touchscreen - occasionally it takes a couple tries to get touch response.
buy screen wipes , you have finger oil and this is one big black mirror
we got this to replace a cluttered noisy desktop, it has no fans = no noise and is very compact, and at 1920x1080 true HD for the 23" screen, its very productive workspace, very fast.
Problem... It makes such a good media center that there is family competition to use it. It seems to work wireless "n" speeds so Netflix and hulu are stutter-free prefect, its bigger than the kitchen TV. Someone is always using it.
at 1200 bucks it was 2/3 the cost of the system it replaced.
my advice: buy 2 of them.
edit update - we just ordered #2 since the first one never left the Kitchen & Livingroom area, where it will likely live out its useful days so Dads that buy it, set your expectations - Recipies, Netflix, Hulu, Email and facebook, and skype 2 way video ( hi mom! ) youteube, ABC full length shows and Vevo ( Vevo looks amazing ) will rule along with the touch screen magazine catalogs and lookbooks at ctndigital. youtube of this touchsmart doing amazing things in flash [...] it wont be much used for real computing - its all family entertainment.

HP TouchSmart 600-1155 All-in-One PC (Black) Review

HP TouchSmart 600-1155 All-in-One PC (Black)

I wanted to try a touchscreen in the kitchen area and this seemed to be the fastest available with the largest screen. I was always just grabbing the iPad to check email and calendar stuff but sometimes I couldn't find it, having left it somewhere else in the house. So now I have had the HP touchsmart for a month and I think it is very good but there is room for improvement. First, the screen is big and gorgeous. It is responsive and accurate for touch applications plus windows 7 and the processor is fast. It is quiet and boots rapidly which is key for me. The touch apps though are a mixed bag. The Calander app is a huge dissapointment since it is supposed to sync with google and it doesn't at all. It is a key component of why I got the computer so the family can share the calanders we all have and access everything. Maybe there will be an update? The recipe app is useful as it loads recipes you can find online. The notes app is ok as you can leave post it notes on the screen for others to see. The picture app is like Picasso from google with quick access to an online photo service. In comparison to the iPad, of course, the apps have a long way to go but Hp has taken a step in the right direction. I would pay $5 for apps for this Touchscreen if they were as good as the ones on the iPad I use everyday (like Calengoo, Informant, or some of the games). Maybe HP should have an app store for this? In any case, I am very happy with my purchase and would do it again. I looked at the Sony Vaio but didn't feel I needed to pay extra for the name and I am happy I didn't. Plus, the wireless connection worked perfectly out of the box and recognized my HP Printer upstairs immediately. Setup was a breeze and took 5 minutes max. Highly recommended if you want to try out a touchscreen desktop.

I think the computer is great and the touchscreen sensitivity and response is outstanding compared to others. The big screen is ideal for watching videos and movies, the keyboard is wireless and helps save on wire space and looks a bunch more organized. One great thing about this computer is the fact that I only need to plug in one wire. I don't have to worry about finding a plug when I have one right there. It is completely worth the money, considering how fast it processes. The actual memory that it processes during a game is also, outstanding. Everything runs completely smooth and the webcam is crystal clear. The mic is very sensitive but it makes a great sound quality through the other side. Windows 7 makes the computer a much more simpler joy to use and utilize all its abilities. This computer is the best so far and is perfect for anyone. I hope everyone likes and enjoys it as much as I do.

Arrived quickly and in perfect condition. I'm so glad I sprang for the 23" screen. I can have several sites up at the same time, and there is plenty of room to see them all. The picture is excellent, the sound not so much but I could always get external speakers if I wanted. It's nice to have the foot room where a tower used to be. Plus the computer is light enough to easily move to other locations...just one cord, wireless keyboard and mouse. No fuss, no muss.
