ATI Radeon X1600 Pro 512 MB PCI Express Review

I got this card to run under a Linux system and ATI's support for Linux is pretty poor. Have had LOTS of troubles trying to get it configured and working and the "Linux tools" that are supplied by ATI for it are undocumented and difficult to understand. I strongly recommend not buying ATI cards for Linux systems, nVidia is far better supported.

For outstanding digital entertainment and 3-D graphics, look no further than the Radeon X1600 Pro. The card is designed to transform your PC with astonishing graphics performance and visual quality, creating a lifelike high-definition (HD) viewing experience with 3-D games, DVD movies, and digital photography and video.
Performance, by the Numbers Under the hood you'll find 157 million transistors on a 90nm fabrication process; 12 pixel shader processors; 5 vertex shader processors; 512 MB of 128-bit, 4-channel GDDR3 memory; and a native PCI Express x16 bus interface. The card also features a ring bus memory controller for 256-bit memory reads, which is optimized for performance at high-display resolutions.
The Radeon X1600 also supports impressive shader performance with Shader Model 3.0--now you can see incredible details never before visible. The X1600 also allows you to experience simultaneous high dynamic range rendering and advanced adaptive anti-aliasing for incredible enhancements to lighting contour and color details. Take the edge off of jagged wires and strands of hair, while experiencing photorealistic lighting.
Home Theater Compatibility ATI's Avivo technology, which is integrated into the X1600, promises a high-definition visual experience, delivering sharper photos, smoother video, true-to-life image representation, and universal display connectivity for driving HD displays. High-definition images come to life with remarkable clarity and color. Plus, Avivo's universal connectivity allows you to create your ideal display setup. The technology also offers accelerated MPEG-2, MPEG-4, DivX, WMV9, VC-1, and H.264 decoding, encoding, and transcoding. In the display support department you get an integrated dual-link DVI connector, plus compliance with HDMI and HDCP connections. There's even a component output for direct connections to HDTV displays.
CrossFire: Twice the Fun With the purchase of a X1600 CrossFire Edition card, your X1600 can be upgraded to take advantage of ATI's CrossFire technology, giving you twice the power to throw at the most demanding games. Based on the same technology used with ATI-based commercial flight simulators, CrossFire soars into a new dimension of graphics capability with multiple graphics processing units (GPUs) working together in your PC. With two X1600 cards installed in your PCI Express-based PC, you can choose from three operating modes. First, Alternate Frame Rendering mode balances GPU tasks between the two cards for optimum performance. There's also a multiple load-sharing Scissor mode for compatibility with all games, as well as a Supertiling mode that divides the screen into multiple sectors that are selectively targeted by the two GPUs, offering the best load balancing between them. Note that to take advantage of CrossFire your computer must have a motherboard that is CrossFire-ready. The Radeon Xpress 200 CrossFire Edition and Intel i955X based dual-slot motherboards are supported platforms.

EVGA 132-BL-E758-A1 X58 3-Way SLI Core i7 Motherboard with Tri-Channel DDR3 and Tuning Utility Review

EVGA 132-BL-E758-A1 X58 3-Way SLI Core i7 Motherboard with Tri-Channel DDR3 and Tuning Utility

PROs:
- Solid board. Very heavy compared to most other mobo's I've worked with (heavy being a good thing, due to the heatsink material, which you want in a mobo that will be running an i7)
Easy install
Easy setup.
I ordered one for a client and it operates fine. It was built for a business environment, so it is built as a desktop PC, NOT a gaming rig.
-cables - EVGA includes like 5 or 6 Sata cables, about 4 molex-to-sata adapters.
-adapters - evga includes the video connectors for multiple video card operation.
- onboard reset and cmos reset buttons
- 2 digit display on mobo, as a troubleshooting tool
- Warranty - register within 30 days and you will get the lifetime warranty on this mobo.
Otherwise it is only 2 years.
- Advanced RMA options:
NOTE: When you register this mobo at EVGA, you get ONE OPPORTUNITY to upgrade to an "Advanced RMA" program.
If you pass on it during registration, you will NOT get a second chance to order the advanced RMA option.
"quote"
......During the registration process, you will be asked if you want to participate in the EAR program. After the registration process is complete, customers will no longer be able to participate in the EAR program.....
"unquote"
-Advanced RMA program:
"Quote"
The EVGA Advanced RMA (EAR) Program is a program to protect yourself and your product in the case of product failure. If something was to go wrong with your EVGA product the standard RMA process will be accelerated by prepaying for your shipping options with one of the plans available. This will cut down the amount of time your system will be down and save you money on shipping. Customers can choose to not participate in this program and if anything does go wrong in the future they can still apply for a standard RMA. Cross-Shipment on standard RMAs are not available and customers will be required to pay for shipping the product(s) back to EVGA. "Unquote"The basic, free, RMA service requires customer to pay S&H, then EVGA will return ship it via standard ground. There is NO CROSS-SHIPPING.
Plan Ship In Ship Out Cross Ship Price
Standard RMA Customer Pays Free Ground No Free
Standard EAR Customer Pays Ground Yes $10.99
Premium EVGA Prepaid Ground Yes $14.99
Ground
2nd Day EVGA Prepaid 2nd Day Yes$21.99
Ground
Overnight EVGA Prepaid Standard Yes $29.99
GroundOvernight
Saturday Priority EVGA Prepaid Saturday Delivery Yes $39.99
Ground
If you think you'll need expedited service for any possible RMA, then even the most expensive option, $39.99, is not bad.
CONS:
- Requires an EPS 12volt (8-pin) power adapter, in addition to the standard 24-pin ATX.
If you plan to use an EXISTING POWER SUPPLY, make sure it has an EPS power connector.
The EPS 8-pin looks "similar" to the PCI-e 8-pin but is KEYED DIFFERENTLY.
You can buy a "Molex-to-EPS12" adapter for about $3 to $5 bucks.
NOTE: if you will be gaming with this mobo, then plan on buying a new power supply.
EVGA did NOT include the molex-to-EPS adapter, because it seems they don't want you to use a non-EPS power supply.
So if your power supply is a couple/few years old, plan on buying a new one.

LSI Logic LSI00137 MegaRAID SAS 84016E SGL 16PT 3GB S PCIE 256MB Controller Card Review

LSI Logic LSI00137 MegaRAID SAS 84016E SGL 16PT 3GB S PCIE 256MB Controller Card
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this card as an upgrade to my Areca 1220 hardware RAID 5 controller because it has 4 SAS ports which I can use to directly connect up to 16 drives with. Right now I have 15 drives connected: a 4 drive RAID5 for the OS (Ubuntu 64bit) and a 10 drive RAID5 for data with 1 hotspare. So far it has been rock solid and I get good RAID performance. I haven't benchmarked yet but I can pull at about 200Mb/s across the network so transfers usually bottleneck on the destination drive, not on the RAID. RAID 6 is offered as an option and I when I get around to benchmarking them both I may decide to go that route if the performance is good. Right now I have 2 drive redundancy with the hotspare and that is sufficient for my home media server.
The major downside to this card is that there is no Debian installer for their card management software. They have an RPM package which I converted to a .deb with alien but it's been a hassle getting it running. So their linux support is limited to Redhat and distro that use RPM. Hopefully they will fix this soon.
I didn't want to use expander boards to connect additional drives so I went looking for a SAS card with 4 ports and LSI delivered. For the price this is probably the best value for the capacity.

3WARE Pci-e Sataraid Review

3WARE Pci-e Sataraid

3ware 9650SE-8LPML PCI-Express x4 RAID Controller Card
Supports RAID: 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50, Single Disk, and JBOD
256M Cache (BBU Module is HIGHLY Recommend for write caching)
Connectors: 2x Multi-Lane SFF-8087
Cables: Two SATA Forward breakout cables supplied. (1x Mini-SAS to 4x SATA converter, 0.6M)
Also includes the mounting bracket to switch to low-format mode. This will also work with the BBU attached if you need to mount it in a short slot. The card does get quite warm though so keep cooling in mind.
Support in almost all operating systems (Linux/MAC/Windows) (Built-in Native support in most new versions of Linux flavors making install super simple.)
If it came with the BBU, I'd give it a full 5 stars... I think the 'kit' should... Still, this is a great product at a pretty good price.
Details:
I bought two 3ware 9659SE-8LPML cards for a matching set of large RAID6 servers. The one problem with these cards is they don't come with the BBU (Battery Backup Unit) by default (Part: BBU-MODULE-03) which is highly stressed for enabling write caching (A good UPS could be the other possibility but... if it fails... a bad write could corrupt the drive).
One of my cards failed shortly after initial setup. (It happens, especially with 'some companies' shipping habits... Not a bid deal but something that had to be handled...)
So I had to replace it. Then due to my common luck; the original place of purchase was out so I had to RMA for refund only and hunt for another one. Amazon to the rescue! Granted it cost a tad more than the OEM, however, this is the full KIT, not just the OEM board which I had before. So in reality, it's cheaper considering it comes with two forward breakout cables for the SFF-8087 mini-SAS to SATA drives which cost around $30 each alone. So I should have done this the first time...
This does use PCI-Express x4 due to the 8 channel setup (x8 and x16 is fine also). If you have only PCI-Express x1 capability left, you might need to look at other options.
It only supports SATA 3G (or SAS). If you're building a SPEED critical system, you might want to get the newer SATA 6G version even for SATA 3G drives... It will improve your speeds believe it or not. However for me this was just a long-term file server with a mirror so speed wasn't as critical and this saves quite a few bills. Even so, this is a very fast performer. Just not the king of the heap.
All in all - a known good 8-port RAID card and this one includes the SFF-8087 mini-SAS -to- SATA breakout cables. Nice package. If they added the BBU, it would be perfect...
Using this system with eight Samsung HD154UI 1.5TB drives in a RAID 6 configuration with no Hot Spares (9TB total drive (6 data 2 error); really more like 8.3TB usable but.. we know how that really goes...). I'm running two systems that mirror each other so I'd have to lose 6 drives (3 from each system) at the same time to lose all data. Anything can happen but for a total systems budget of four grand, this is a pretty secure way to get a ton of very secure storage using very inexpensive equipment.
I choose this RAID card instead of the others available due to my history with 3ware (and many other) cards. 3ware makes a good raid card, honestly in my opinion, the best bang for the buck. I hope LSI improves to the 3ware level now that they own 3ware. Let's all wish them the best and hope they do. This comes in an LSI branded box but still is the same 3ware product.

The drive works great with Windows 7. I did have some issues with Ubuntu. Start up times are really fast.
The only big drawback is the price, I waited for Amazon to drop the price, but never happened and still priced well above the $[...] MSRP.
So I bought from Newegg and after the [...] and free shipping my total cost was $[...]
Do your homework before buying this product. Its an excellent product, but make sure your Motherboard will support it and you have a free PCI slot for it. NOTE: It will not work properly in a 1x slot, and read the OCZ Revodrive specs carefully.
If you work with CS5 it will load up lighting fast.
