Epson Perfection 4870 PRO Scanner Review

Epson Perfection 4870 PRO Scanner

I shoot black & white 35 mm. Previously relied upon either a Polaroid SprintScan 4000 or drum scans. The 4870 produces gorgeous scans and is easy to use. I'm very happy with my purchase. SilverFast has proved to be a dissapointment for use with B&W negs. I would probably have purchased the regular 4870 vs. Pro version if I had it to do over again.

Microtek ScanMaker 9800XL Scanner with Transparent Media Adapter Review

Microtek ScanMaker 9800XL Scanner with Transparent Media Adapter

I have a Microtek scanner and just downloaded the latest drivers. It turns out Microtek wants a program called Scan Finder to load at every start-up, and there is no way to disable this. The product works satisfactorily, but for my money, I will purchase something else. Something that doesn't create such a nuisance, and isn't so invasive.

Epson Perfection 4870 Photo Scanner Review

Epson Perfection 4870 Photo Scanner

I bought the Epson 4870 scanner to scan my old pictures and negatives. I read many reviews on different scanners. I chose Epson 4870 mainly for the high resolution. I also, liked the firewire option and the speed seemed to be reasonable.
I managed to scan hundreds of films and pictures in the last few months with no problem. The product works excellent, but that itself could be the problem. It is just too good for my needs. The very high resolution would produce files about 100 MB; way too big to adjust the lighting or the color on it. My Intel P4 machine with 256 MB RAM had hard time managing those files. The resolution was much higher than anything my $1000 digital camera could ever produce. Unless you are a professional photographer or you need to make large posters of your pictures, you will never need such a high resolution capability. I ended up using the lower resolution settings and still have very good quality scans. Save your money and buy the Epson 3170.
Here are some technical notes:
The setup on my XP machine was very easy and took only few minutes. I used both firewire and USB with no problem. I noticed absolutely no "stability & reliability problems" as other reviewer has reported. I wonder if that reviewer's machine did not have the muscle to handle the large files. You need at least 128MB of memory. Also, if you use Windows, make sure you have set enough space for your virtual memory (on XP: Control Panel -> Performance and Maintenance -> System ->Advanced -> performance ->Virtual Memory).
The black & white setting of the software does not work, but you can use the color setting for scanning the black and white pictures with no problem (you will get a good quality B&W scan).
The Adobe Photoshop LITE included with the package is definitely needed to adjust the lighting and the color. For more repair work on damaged films or for applying special filters, I would recommend the full version of the Adobe Photoshop.

Epson Expression 10000XL- Graphic Arts Scanner Review

Epson Expression 10000XL- Graphic Arts Scanner

I purchased this recently because I wanted to upgrade from my old scanner, the Microtek 9800XL large format scanner.
I create highly detailed scratchboard line art and wanted a scanner that could capture the best possible scans of my work, which I can color digitally and send out to clients in electronic form. (I wasn't confident that my old scanner was doing the job as well as I hoped for.) Both the new and the old scanner are large format but the Epson 10000Xl is more than twice the cost of the Microtek 9800XL. Do I think the upgrade is worth it? Without a doubt.
Here is a list of cons associated with the Microtek that made me take the risk to upgrading:
1. Quirky driver. Sometimes the software could not find the installed driver and I had to restart the computer several times before it would work.
2. Microtek support is practically useless.
3. Very noisy operation
4. Scans required a lot of post production to arrive at the best capture of detail between dark and light tones. I had to scan in grayscale @ 1200dpi, make adjustment with Photoshop before converting to bitmap. With this scanner, the B&W bitmap scanning option was not capturing all the details.
The Epson, in comparison, has been a joy to own. Not only are the results much better, but the unit scans straight to B&W bitmap flawlessly, saving me time in post processing. I do need to clean the scan from unwanted specs but that is still a 50% reduction of time spent getting it optimized. The unit is also much quieter, has a slightly larger scan area, and built with superior design and parts. The lid stays open when raised at an angle whereas the Microtek was a slave to gravity.
After owning it about a month, there have been no problems to report. Since my livelihood relies on the quality of the images I produce, its a good investment and well worth the cost.

We saw one of these being used in a medical office to scan insurance cards and were impressed with the speed of the scanning and its obvious ease of use. We have a large number of family snapshots that we wanted to digitize so we bought one for ourselves and have been every much as pleased with this handy little scanner as we expected. As a bonus, we get periodic emails from Fujitsu with some useful tips about using this scanner.

Epson GT-20000 B11B195011 High Performance Scanner (White) Review

Epson GT-20000 B11B195011 High Performance Scanner (White)

Great large-format scanner. It's a work horse--not many frills, but very competent. I use it almost exclusively for document scanning (mostly music), and mostly at 600dpi. While I've done some photo scans, I'm not competent to judge their quality, other than that I subjectively like them better than my $100 Canon scanner.
I'd love to see someone compare this scanner to the Epson $2500 model, for performance *and* quality. (For my use, performance at 600dpi is more important than the scanner's absolute best quality at its max optical dpi.)
PROs: Large format; document good scan quality; Much faster than $100 letter-sized scanners; nice lid (easily removable, flexible positioning); reasonable software bundle.
CONs: Big (probably true of all large format scanners); cooling fan is a bit loud, but does turn off after about 5 minutes of non-use.
