ASUS Essentio CM1630-05 Athlon II X2 220 2.8GHz 4GB 750GB DVD±RW DL Windows 7 Home Premium w/HDMI Review

Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)After having an HP for a long time and many hours of college abuse it died. I needed a new computer fast so bought this, from the get go it was easy to set up and install everything i needed. Can handle multitasking, like word doc up, multiple internet sites, adobe reader, music, downloading etc all at onces. I'm a horrible PC owner and leave mine on all the time so prolonged use does not seem to be effecting it. I do a lot of movie editing for fun and handles that fine. I do have an external hard drive for storage but I have a lot of junk. Love the multiple UBS ports on the front as well as memory card, headphone and mic plug ins. I have a lot of crap I hitch up to my computer and it comes in handy. Only thing I would suggest is if your big on gaming graphic card isn't spectacular but for the basics it's fine. I'm not great with the computer lingo but I was told this would be a great computer, Asus has been making computer parts for a long time and are a well known computer company. Good customer services. If cosmetics matter it's simple but kind of sleek, nothing fancy.
For the price it's a great computer.

Asus EeeBox EBXB202-WHT-X0081 Desktop PC (1.6 GHz Intel Atom Processor, 1 GB RAM, 160 GB Hard Drive, XP Home) White Review

Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)Easy to hook up, tiny, and fast enough for the usual tasks - browsing, running Outlook Express, word processing and the like. I like the less-than-25W power consumption. It's very quiet, and did I mention how SMALL it is?
The much talked-about "Express Gate" boot up feature doesn't seem very worthwhile to me, but it might be to someone else. Booting into XP with this box is not much slower.
I don't think this machine will run demanding games, and with 1G of memory it won't do fifteen things at once. But if you need the basics, 160G of space, and don't want to weep over your electric bill if it gets left on overnight, then this is a great choice.
And it's not running Vista. That's a selling point.
Addendum: Now I have 2 - my wife continues to use the first one happily, and the second is my print, music, and home automation server. I rarely say this about Microsoft, and maybe Asus gets some of the credit, but this machine was a dream to set up. I plugged in all my USB devices (and these are many), the ethernet connector, the line out, and turned on the power. It came up, recognized everything, asked a few questions... and worked. No muss. No fuss. I don't think I've ever had this experience. And at

Acer AspireRevo AR3610-U9022 Desktop PC (Dark Blue) Review

Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)I don't normally write reviews, but this little guy blew me away. For $125 more so over the 1600 you'll get dual core, 2GB RAM, Windows 7, wireless keyboard and mouse and the VESA mount (its included). And the dual core will make a difference if you are playing back 1080P source material.
Be sure to download the flash beta 10.1 which uses the Ion processor's hardware acceleration or you will be disappointed. Also need the latest NVIDIA drivers. I'm playing movies both through Media Player Classic - Home Cinema and utilizing the PC to run the latest BOXEE beta which while having some bugs really is fun to play with. Boxee will consolidate your media library on your PC or network share (I'm using an UNRAID server, which is fabulous as a media server) along with content from the internet (TV shows, Movies, Apps, You Tube etc..). Thinking about playing with XBMC next (Which Boxee is based on).
The HDMI out is working great for both Video and Audio (not all HDMI outs on PC's support audio as I found out the hard way). There is a utility with the NVIDIA graphics to size the desktop to exactly your flat screen dimensions (no need to play with aspect ratio on your TV).
While not my use, it would make a great extra PC for the kids or significant other if all they do is surf, with an occasional word document here or there.
The PC is really quiet, I simply can not hear it at all and it stays nice and cool.
Highly recommended, but I guess you knew that already!

ASUS Eee Box EB1501-B0167 Nettop PC - Black Review

Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)Now that I've had the EB1501 integrated into my home theater for a few weeks, I thought I would update my review of it.
I have this connected via HDMI to receiver, surround sound and a 52" HDTV. Due to the limitations of my setup (not the EB1501), I do not use HDMI for sound, so I will not say anything about the box's ability to carry both signals properly. If you use S/PDIF for audio, you are going to appreciate the included adapter (works great). I was going to use Boxee or XBMC, but I don't like the hassle of setting up and integrating Tv tuners into those, so I am using Windows 7's Media Center.
The EB1501 is EVERYTHING I have been looking for in a HTPC. It runs (very) cool and (very) quiet. It's barely noticeable yet attractive enough to not have to hide - which makes it easier to get to the DVD drive, power, ports, etc... The computer is stable and a workhorse for this task.
With the Atom processor, I wouldn't recommend trying to do too much gaming or heavy multitasking. As a component in a home theater, this thing runs circles around the almost useless Media Center Extender I was using before.

ZOTAC ZBOX ZBOXHD-AD01-U AMD Athlon Neo X2 L325 1.5 GHz Dual Core All-In-One Mini-PC Review

Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)UPDATE 2-18-11: Now runs 720p YouTube full screen perfectly. Still has some trouble with Hulu (what doesn't?). The difference over my former review is that Flash 10.2 and an update of the AMD/ATI Catalyst driver were both released in the past week, and VASTLY improve video performance. I am now using this as my primary desktop computer and it is excellent.
Original review from December, except as noted:
This does not come with Windows; this does not come with a hard drive or RAM; it is what is known as a "barebones" system.
It appealed to me because I have several hard disks lying around from upgrading netbooks, some 1gb memory modules, and an unused copy of Win XP.
Took a whopping 7 minutes to unscrew the case (with thumb screws, no screwdriver required) and install the hardware.
Use my netbook external CD Rom to install Windows.
Used the included drivers disk to complete installation.
Works fine. Nice ports layout. Nice desk stand.
ONLY ISSUE is the fan comes on when just web browsing. Disappointing. Will give to my wife to use for watching DOO TV (foreign TV stream). (I could understand the fan coming on for higher intensity use - but web browsing? The noise level will be an issue for home theater pc users.) [UPDATE ON FAN: I downloaded some additional drivers from Zotac and the fan is no longer an issue, it runs slow and quiet even with heavy tasks like burning DVD's, but the fan DOES still come on loud and hard if it wakes up from "sleep" mode - don't know why, but my solution is just to turn it off instead of putting it to sleep. For all I know this may only be a problem under Win XP, I am also running a Linux partition and no problem in sleep mode there.] [January ADDITIONAL PROBLEM NOTED: I don't think WinXP is best for this motherboard/chipset/BIOS. When burning a DVD disk or transferring files to an external hard drive, I can't switch browser tabs (yes, I am browsing while transferring data!) very quickly, the replacement tab "appears" very slowly, although task manage indicates there is plenty of RAM (I have 2k installed) the computer is using a page file - writing RAM to the hard drive - hence any activity that is also using the hard drive intensely means the page file gets SLOW. I recommend considering using 4 gb of RAM in this unit and Win7 Premium instead. I have come to appreciate this unit more for its size, low power use, quiet fan, and efficiency since using it more.] In December 2010, I couldn't get get full screen Hulu even at 360p resolution without stuttering, and in fact I got "artifacts" in the video even with "in the browser" sizing at 360p. Those problems were when I was running Flash 10.1, which was all that was available then.
In mid-February 2011, Adobe released Flash 10.2 which utilizes the video processor much better, and concurrently AMD/ATI also released new video drivers to work better with Flash 10.2. The result is as I noted in my new opening paragraph. Great video, except for Hulu, which is watchable but not great full screen at 360p. YouTube can run 270p full screen however. And I get good Netflix. Still, for the best Netflix, a sub-100 dollar Apple TV or Roku player are MUCH better, crystal clear, stutter free, 720p (and some 1080p on Apple) video.
This nettop is now satisfactory for light home theater and most desktop chores short of game playing.
Please note that at the January 2011 CES (Consumer Electronics Show), AMD released a new set of ultra low power chips with a significantly improved GPU (graphics processing unit) that will probably use less power than this Neo nettop and even better graphics. I would therefore recommend waiting, if you can, until end of first quarter, mid 2011 and get an AMD E-350 powered nettop.box. Goggle AMD E-350 reviews for more information.

eMachines Desktop PC with AMD Athlon(TM) XP Processor 3000+ (T3025) Review

Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)I purchased this wonderful PC about 3 weeks ago, and let me tell you, it was money well spent. When my old Gateway died, I found that there was nothing I could do to replace the power supply which had failed. Gateway made it a proprietary part, and I would have had to have paid them 200 dollars to replace it. Needless to say, that is an exorbitant amount of money to pay to repair a 4 year old computer.
With that in mind, I went looking for a computer with high quality parts that were replaceable with parts off the shelf. I quickly found out that other pc makers like HP also use proprietary parts, and that their wiring/mobo layouts are atrocious.
I finally saw the EMachines T3025, and its specs were quire impressive. I determined by calling their technical support that all of their parts are end user replaceable, and that they use high quality parts. Some of these are not listed on any of the detailed specs, but some examples where others would cut corners are: The Hard Drive is a Western Digital ATA 133, 7200 RPM, not some cheap knockoff.
The Power Supply is 300 watts, which supplies more than ample power (compare to HPs usual 150 Watts). The Nforce 2 Motherboard, one of the best chipsets, and it takes ddr 333 memory.
Enough of this technical hodgepodge, how does it run? The answer is that it runs amazingly well. Its functionality is great, and its speed is unmatched in its price range. The Athlon 3000+ and the 512 mb of ddr ram make this thing fly. Its sound is excellent, and it is handled by the motherboard. The integrated Ethernet works well, as does the media card reader and USB ports.
Gaming on this PC is good, but I highly recommend an upgrade in that department for serious gaming. I installed a radeon 9600, which helped immensely, and still ended up at 800 dollars. For that price you get a PC that is immensely reliable, upgradeable, and FAST. It is comparable, benchmark wise to a Dimension XPS costing 3 times that much, but Dell also uses proprietary parts.
Emachine's Tech Support is great as well. I called 14 times, and averaged less than 50 seconds on hold each time before a (GASP) Real Human Being picked up.
This computer has earned my highest recommendation for its budget friendly price, quality of parts, upgradeability (standard micro-atx mobo, Atx power supply, 2 GB ram maximum,), blazing performance, and of course, friendly technical support. A 3 year on site warranty is available via Emachines for the low price of 140 dollars as well - less than 1/2 of what Dell and Gateway charge. Buy this computer, and you will not be disappointed.

ViewSonic VOT132_BVDB00 Mini Desktop PC - Black Review

Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)I bought the VOT132 without a Windows operating system installed in order to use it as legacy Windows XP computer. (I had a valid XP license and installation disk from an older computer I had retired.) Unlike ViewSonic's subsequent PC mini, the VOT125, the VOT132 has full driver support for Windows XP. I had to download the XP drivers from the ViewSonic website, but everything that I needed was there. Unlike some folks, I have had basically no noise problems with this computer.
My biggest problem with this computer is that it is underpowered. I mean this in two ways: first the processor (but that I can live with) and second the actual amount of power that seems to be available for the USB ports. (A computer this small has no COM ports or PS2 ports so everything depends on the USB ports.) About three months after I bought it, I started having the computer freeze during boot up. While this may possibly be a driver problem (although I am not sure how), it feels like the machine fails to boot properly because it doesn't have enough power. The workaround for the situation that I have at present is to unplug the USB cable that goes from my VOT132 to my KVM switch BEFORE I boot up in order to keep the computer from hanging just as the XP flash screen is displayed. Once the computer is booted up I can reconnect the cable and use the mouse and keyboard via the KVM with no problem.
While I am still confused about the source of my problems, it appears likely that using most of the six USB ports (as I am) is an invitation to start up problems.
(After close to two decades of using PCs running Windows, over the last two years I have moved to Mac OS X and Linux machines for almost all of my application and server functions. It is, however, unavoidable that some archived material-- such as old email-- can only be read on legacy Windows applications and a few programs-- like my current income tax and genealogy software-- only run under Windows. So this machine will both permanently archive materials that can't leave Windows and will provide a bridge for the next three or four years for running software I am not ready to replace with Mac compatible programs.)

Dell Inspiron Zino HD 2GB 250GB Piano Black Desktop Review

Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)I bought the bare bones ($229) version of this shortly after it was released to use as an HTPC. I didn't bother with Blu-ray or an upgraded video card because I knew a stand alone player would be better for the actual discs.
Once I had the box I plugged in a bluetooth adapter and an external HD to make up for the small stock HD. Initially I was frustrated because the video playback jumped, Hulu didn't work well, and so forth. However, once I went through the process of turning off the useless processes in Windows 7, updating the Catalyst drivers, using the Flash 10.1 and Silverlight betas, and putting Shark007 codecs on the machine it's worked wonderfully. Netflix in Windows Media Center plays flawlessly, Hulu works great, Youtube has no problems, Boxee runs nicely, and I can watch 720p and 1080p just fine (I use WMP with the Shark007 codecs). I really couldn't ask for more, especially because I paid such a good price for it. It does freeze up on occasion if I'm very impatient with it, but that's acceptable to me.

Zotac ZBOX Intel Atom D525 1.8 GHz Dual Core with Blu-ray All-in-One Mini-PC ZBOXHD-ID34BR Review

Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)Pros:
-Bluray. Woohoo!
-Very thin/light/quiet/small. And I mean quiet!!
-Attractive, has options in BIOS to turn off the blue light which is great!
-I created a bootable SD card using Windows7-USB-DVD-tool.exe ... if you want to create a bootable SD/USB flash card from a DVD ISO, this is the best way to do it!! Worked like a charm on this unit.
-Reasonable speeds... one of the best nettops out there, this is new hardware folks.
Cons:
-Only one legacy usb port, for some reason my legacy usb devices and thumb drives don't work in the newer high speed usb ports on this, needed to buy a usb hub to be safe.
-250GB HD? You do realize people are dishing out $500 for this thing, and using it almost entirely as a livingroom media solution, most likely to rip DVD's, etc... I would expect 500GB at the VERY LEAST.
-Would have been happier with more than 2GB RAM, especially at this price point, but that will suffice for most applications of this box. This is not as big of a deal to me.
-If you use NetFlix streaming to a TV like I do, be prepared that HD encoding will slow down majorly on this box at times. I turn off HD feature on NetFlix streaming entirely to avoid this. These units are hardware equipped for Flash acceleration, unfortunately NetFlix uses MS Silverlight. This is not Zodac's fault and does not count against them in this review, just pointing that out because I know other people will be trying the same stuff.
Overall, you can't get a much sexier nettop than this, but I have to give honest criticism where it is due. Don't cheat your customers on basic necessities. You should have had one less USB 3.0 port, and one more legacy port. This isn't 2015 yet. And you went cheap with the 250GB HD, IMO. I would have gladly spent a few extra bucks for 500GB.
But again, gosh this thing looks sexy in my living room next to my TV. Love showing it off.
Come to think of it, haven't tried overclocking yet... can't comment on the overclockability of this unit.
EDIT: my CPU overclocks stable at 206MHz (base speed) without any changes in fan speed/voltage
AND, buy this HD Decoder card that fits perfectly on this Motherboard in the extra mini-pcie slot, it makes a huge difference in your ability to watch streaming HD video without lag/choppiness: (search google for "logicsupply" which is where I got mine, and get the Broadcom Hardware Decoder BCM970015 - PCIe Mini Card (BCM970015))
It was on sale for $35 from this same website when I bought it a couple weeks ago... now it's at $50. Still well worth it.

ASUS Eee Box EB1012-B0257 Nettop PC - Black Review

Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)I bought this last December and use it to surf the internet on our family room TV. It works pretty well. I do not feel that it is underpowered for my needs (browsing, YouTube, watching local videos on my computer, viewing JPEG pictures, etc). I sold my Western Digital TV Live after I bought the EeeBox EB1012.
I put the computer horizontally in my TV console (because it would not fit standing upright with the stand) even though the manual says not to do so. I don't know why the manual shows not to do this... maybe due to lack of ventilation when it is on its side (as another reviewer pointed out)? To help improve air flow I put this on top of 4 "rubber feet". I don't use this much so hopefully the subpar ventilation in my setup won't be a problem.
One complaint I have is the lack of control over the display resolution. I have a problem with "HDMI overscan" where the image is too big for the TV. I have to reduce the resolution from 1920x1080 to the next smaller one which does not totally fit the TV screen. The pre-installed driver had a scale adjustment so I was able to reduce the resolution so it fit my TV perfectly. After running Microsoft update that feature does not work well anymore. There is still an option to scale the desktop but when I click on it another box comes up but only 25% of it is visible -- making it useless as I cannot see all of the controls.
Also, while this comes with 2GB of RAM and supports up to 4GB it isn't easy to add memory yourself. The case is not easy to open and if you break it your warranty might be voided. According to an Asus representative one has to have an authorized service center do it. That's kinda silly to pay so much (shipping + service fee + likely-to-be-inflated RAM price) to upgrade this computer.
I don't use the WiFi since I use a Linksys powerline adapter for faster data rates and a more reliable connection.
I find the ASUS support to be inferior to US companies such as Dell, HP, etc. Their website isn't very helpful, IMHO.
Overall I'm still happy because it fits my needs.

eMachines Ultra-Slim ER1401-57 Desktop PC Review

Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)This specific series comes in three types the ER1402-05, the ER1402-55 and the ER1401-57. This one the ER1401-57 is the best in the series because it comes with a larger hard drive and dual core CPU instead of the single core of the others. This uses the AMD Athlon II Neo Dual-Core K325 1.3 "Ultrathin" line of processors. I bought it for an incredible holiday promotion price of $300 bucks new.
This line of emachines I highly recommend for Home Theater PC and is probably the best value on the market. As for the ER1401-57 you get a fast dual core CPU, DDR3 memory (not DDR2 as with most brands in this price range) and FULL Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit all for less than $331.00 retail. The addition of Win 7 64 is an added bonus value of $180 that Zotac, and Lenovo can't match in this price range. The only competition would be the Acer AspireRevo but it is still a full 50 bucks more. I steered away from the Dell Zino HD's as most of the reviews were bad and complained of slow performance. The performance with the ER1401-57 is fast as far as internet browsing and simple non graphic intensive word processing. As a PC for gaming and high graphic editing it is NOT your best bet as it will not be able to handle most of the latest games and other software that require powerful graphics cards. It will run online flash games and older games like those found on GOG (Good Old Games) with ease, though. In my opinion the real use for a PC like this is as a Home Theater PC to replace cable & satellite or as a compliment to them. It plays everything streaming from the web up to 1080p smoothly. There is a good video review of the of the ER1402-05 on Youtube that shows it playing 1080p video -('gadget' 139 - emachines ER1402-05). 1080p performance on the ER1401-57 is better but not by much. I recommend using PC booster software like "IObit Advanced System Care Pro" which all but eliminates any lag on online streaming videos even at 1080p. I don't recommend using any other applications while streaming video on the ER1401-57 as you will surely get lag. On the downside after using my anti-spyware software I noticed a heck of a lot of spyware hidden in the OS right out of the box which also seemed to bog down performance so its imperative you get your cleaning software and clean all that stuff out. As with the Zotac and Lenovo it has no DVD tray so you'll need to attach a USB external DVD if you want that. Finally, the system is very compact (smaller than an average book), extremely quiet, cool and energy efficient and pretty. All in all I'm very happy with it as a HTPC and with a good USB remote together with the Kylo browser, Boxee and Hulu Desktop software I can finally cancel my huge cable bill forever.
