JBL L880 4-Way, High Performance 6-inch Dual Floorstanding Loudspeaker (Black) Review

(More customer reviews)The JBL L880 floorstanding towers are EXTRAORDINARY value for money compared with other manufacturer's and internet only dealers products. Many will claim to have very neutral response and dynamic potential, but JBL has been in the business of making speakers since before many of those companies were glimmers in the eyes of their founders.
You can find excellent measurements of the L880's response curves online (Stereophile has an excellent review with such measurements) and the measurements don't lie. Flat response on axis from 40KHz down to about 30 Hz (with some leeway for room reinforcement). What that means in terms of listening is that everything sounds exactly as the mixer, engineers, and musicians (or movie makers if that's your bag) intended it to; nothing is being unduly influenced by characteristics of the speakers themselves, hence the description as neutral.
I've been using these paired with an Onkyo TX-SR606, a JBL LC2 center, and some surrounds that used to be the fronts in an Onkyo package (SKS-HT540) for home theater, but what's been most pleasantly surprising is how much these have gotten me back into stereo music listening.
These are excellent speakers for both music and movies, but their musicality is amazing. They produce rich, full bass, mids, and highs with great ease. If you push them, they don't sweat, they just go louder and louder until your AVR gets to its limits. These speakers have made me reconsider my stance on getting a pre-pro and separate amps in the future. Now I want them worse than ever, just to see what these are capable of with 200 Watts RMS vs. the ~90 I'm giving them now.
I've rediscovered my love of classical music thanks to these speakers. I can't wait to get some pipe organ CDs to really put them through their paces.
Pros
-Very nice looking in cherry finish (I'll post a photo)
-Astonishing sound reproduction
-Great stereo imaging
-Great punch and dynamics (esp. for movies, but even with driving rock and roll at extreme volumes these loudspeakers don't crack a sweat)
-Huge headroom for further amplification (as funds become available)
-Nice interconnects and relatively undetectable crossovers (that's a good thing)
-Excellent full range response
Cons
-Size may be an issue for some (I believe in bigger is better when speakers are on the table; see photo for size reference)
-Bi-wire connectivity is more gimmick than reality
-Plastic feet are a weak point but don't look bad
-Resistance ratings are optimistic at 8 ohms nominal (see Stereophile's review among others, these have a wide patch of 3-4 ohm response that may tax some receivers not rated for those low resistances)
In sum these speakers are AMAZING value for money, even at Amazon's prices (though sometimes Harman refurbished ones can be had for less elsewhere on the internet making them even greater value). They are great for home theater applications, but I think even better for music listening in 2 channel or multi-channel. To be completely honest I wish I could buy 3 more L880s for multichannel applications but I know my wife would kill me.
I'm not an audiophile, but I do like classical and jazz music at reference volumes (and play both nonprofessionally) and I can tell you from my own experience with other far more expensive brands at boutique audio stores, these will give speakers at 4 times the price a run for their money with the right amplification (at least 75 W RMS in real life, not manufacturers specs) and have blown everything I've heard at twice the price away solidly.
p.s. There's another reviewer who has suggested that these speakers are the same as the LC2 center channel speaker in the same line. As an owner of both, I can tell you they are not. Cabinet resonance and porting creates a very different speaker (even my Onkyo agrees as the Audyssey 2EQ calibration program crosses the LC2 over at 60 Hz, but leaves the L880s at "Full Range"). The bass and midbass are far fuller and more robust from the L880s.

JBL - Spyro - 2.1 Speaker system (Orange) Review

(More customer reviews)Okay, I don't know why some people are complaining about the touch volume keys. At first when I got this product, I FREAKED out because I couldn't make the volume lower or higher- what I realized was that you can't just touch it with the tip of your finger. You need to like press it with your thumb lightly and with your index finger grab the other side. This can be done lightly- do it as if your trying to touch the tips of your fingers together with the volume key in between them.
I have no complaints EXCEPT that the bass button is on the subwoofer is a little hard to access. My subwoofer is on the floor so in order to increase the bass, I need to basically get on my hands and knees and turn the button that is next to all the other output wires. It's a bit hard to turn since the other wires are kind of blocking it. This is the ONLY negative thing.
These speakers are little and produce the craziest amount of sound. If you're considering getting cute speakers that are girly and that are really strong and play REALLY good base- GET THEM! (By the way, they don't have wires coming from the speakers, they look like jumping rope which is easier to manage and so frikin cute).
I'm a 23 year old med school student and I LOVE THESE!!! :)

(More customer reviews)My theater room is 17 x 20 x 7 which makes it a decent size room. I was torn between buying these wall mounted speakers versus the tower models for fear the the L820's wouldn't be able to keep up. I am very suprized at how well these speakers fill up my room. I have four L820's for front left and right and surrounds. I also have the lc2 for center duties and the L8400 for sub duties.
With this setup I have all speakers wall mounted and all crossed over at 100 HZ. Honestly I don't hear anything missing in the mix. I hear the bass guitars full spectrum and snares and tom toms have alot of weight. These speakers four way design really sound awesome for critical listening. Voices, pianos, and guitars sound amazing.
I am completely satisfied with these speakers for a couple different reasons:
- Sound perfomance is amazing (especially for movies).
- Are wall mounted with all wiring in the wall/no speakers on the floor with unsightly cables.
- Powered them with a modest 50 watt harman kardon reciever. If you buy the towers you will have to shell out alot more money to buy and adequate reciever to power them.
With a proper positioning and proper calibration these speakers are an amazing deal for the money. There is always something better in every aspect of life, but seriously for the money I don't think there is a better deal.
Lastly I would like to add that Amazon has been nothing but a class act to work with and would encourage you to do business with them. You won't regret it!

In my opinion, this is a true full range speaker. The detailed highs, pronounced mid and deep lows make this speaker a winner. I not only recommend this speaker, I also recommend the rest of the Studio L line. One word of caution....they will sound really bright at first but they will calm down.

(More customer reviews)This subwoofer is made to produce QUALITY sound. Some reviews here and elsewhere complain that it does not pump out high amounts of booming base.
This is not a car sub. It is a home theater sub. It produces very clean and tight base, at respectable levels, even when playing action movies.
I much rather have realistic base than simply a big box that pumps out low frequency vibration.
I've tested many subs, and for this price point, you cannot get better quality.
That said, if you have a very large room, you may have to turn the volume up high to get the same level that cheaper subs put out.
Also, placement within the room is everything when it comes to subs.
Don't hesitate: If you can get this for 350-450, buy it.

JBL ES20CH 3-Way, 5 1/4" Bookshelf Speaker - Cherry (Pair) Review

(More customer reviews)First set I ordered were actually defective, producing a low, mild buzz. Contacted Amazon and they immediately sent me a new pair and allowed me 30 days to get the defective ones back! This was great service.
The new pair works as I was hoping, beautifully!! The construction is solid and very attractive. These speakers are smaller than I had thought though, maybe the volume of a box of hiking shoes, but this turned out to be an advantage for wall mounting and generally looking tasteful in my living room.
The sound however, is immaculate. Super crystal clear highs with robust midrange. I am looking forward to being able to get the series accompanying subwoofer though, since these speakers really have little bass response. But they shouldn't really. These speakers are entry level for high end speaker systems, where each speaker has an assigned task, these are for mids and highs which they do spectacularly.
2 of my brothers have JBLs and my father too, all have been overly pleased with the quality, performance, and durability of these speakers. I highly recommend them!

Although they are wedge shaped, they sit on their side fine.
The sound is great and our receiver (Onkyo SR876) detects them as full range for its autobalancing feature.

JBL WEM-1 50-Watt Wireless Amplifier and Expansion Module (Black) Review

(More customer reviews)I bought this once it first came out and I've been pleased. It works effectively to expand your listening area wirelessly between zones or even between 5.1 and 7.1 setups.
I use this across my house - a house that is also set up with a wireless network for my computers as well as both cordless and cellular phones. The interference from these units is minimal, if present at all. Surprisingly, I find the most interference from either myself or others walking past it. Wierd. Though, there are 4 channels available to sync the transmitter and receiver seamlessly (or close to it).
The sound is great. It has a built in 50W amplifier and provides crisp sounds. The subwoofer output allows you to make this mini system a sharp 2.1 surround sound system. Note - use a non LFE sub (or just bypass the LFE option on your sub) since the receiver has its own volume input.
Obviously, the best results are for when you connect an outside music source to the receiver via the mini-jack input. If this is your sole reason to use this product, you don't even need to hook up the transmitter at all. Though, to fully enjoy this product, you should.
I have it hooked up to a 7.1 receiver with 2 zone capability. It works fine and I'm very happy with it. The built in amp definitely helps the performance.

JBL L830 3-Way 6-Inch Bookshelf Loudspeaker (Pair, Black) Review

(More customer reviews)There are no reviews for these speakers yet, so I wanted to write one that will hopefully be useful to other people interested in purchasing the JBL L830's. I purchased these speakers as an upgrade to an existing Onkyo HTIB system I have owned for over a year. While my existing system was already very good, I noticed that during most movies the dialogue was difficult to hear and other sounds were somewhat muddied. I knew when purchasing the HTIB that the speakers included with the set were sub-par, and I had intended to upgrade at some point.
I researched many different brands and speaker types before deciding on the JBL Studio L series. I looked at JBL's cheaper line, the Venue series, but I decided that I wanted to go with the higher end Studio series for a few dollars more. I purchased these L830's for my front L/R and paired them with the LC1 center channel speaker.
The difference in sound compared to my small Onkyo speakers is tremendous. It wasn't until I hooked these speakers up that I noticed how bad my original speakers sounded. The L830's provide a crystal clear sound that is very neutral, and they can drive a decent amount of bass as well, allowing my sub to really focus on the lowest frequencies. My amp is rated at 95 watts a channel, and it seems like the L830's aren't even breaking a sweat even when I crank the volume. It's nice to know there is a lot of untapped power in these speakers, even though I'm not planning to upgrade my amp anytime soon.
Visually, these speakers are beautifully crafted and look very nice. The solid wood construction is very attractive, and the fronts look very cool and modern without the grills on. I was tempted to leave them off but the wife didn't feel the same, so they still look good with flat black grills on the front.
A couple of other things to note... first of all, these speakers are HUGE! They are listed as bookshelf speakers, but they are gigantic and pretty heavy. Not the best match for a flat panel or wall mounted system, and they are probably too deep to fit on most wall-mounted shelves. They work best if you have a deep entertainment center or built-ins with counter tops like I do. Even using speaker stands with these might be tough if they'll be in a high traffic area. Secondly, they are intended to match up with the LC1 center. If you are upgrading your surround system like me and will end up with a mix of these and other lesser speaker models, I would recommend at least getting the LC1 or LC2 to go with it. In my case, these arrived a day before my LC1, and I hooked them up while still using my old Onkyo center. Doing so made it go from difficult to impossible to hear any dialogue in tv or movies. These speakers absolutely overshadowed all other speakers in my setup. Even with recalibrating my amp it was difficult to hear the other channels since these pumped out so much sound. I'm sure most people reading this already know better, but I wanted to at least call it out. Lastly, if you have trouble finding them for a reasonable price, check out a popular online auction site and you might be able to score them direct from the manufacturer at a ridiculously low price if you're patient. Amazon has good deals too, but I'm just saying that it pays to check around. I've seen them go for as low as $140, so at that point you're barely paying more than for a set of Arenas.
All in all, I love these speakers and the amazing sound they deliver. I am sure that some audiophiles will say they can't perform like some of the super high-end speakers out there that cost in the $1,000's, but for their price range I feel you are getting a fantastic and superior sound that can turn most any average system into near-audiophile quality.

JBL ES80BK 3-Way, Dual 6 1/2" Floorstanding Speaker - Black Review

Matched them with a Harman Kardon AVR 145 and wow. This was a team. I have heard many tower speakers from different family and friends, and of course from Best Buy and the like. These speakers can handle a lot of sound and keep clean without distortion. I have certainly given them a workout to test their limits.
I have throughout the life of these speakers changed receivers. The first, AVR145, made any music and any show have the loud booming bass you might expect from a subwoofer and more. It was great. I loved it. Any song from Classical to the "rare once liked but now am trying for the sake of the speakers" rap song played well. Then came the switch to a new AVR 3600. I lost the bass in the same music I was playing just the day before the receivers changed. I know these speakers could do so much more, what was the deal? I eventually even bought a sub to get back my lost bass. I wasn't happy. This receiver wasn't bass boosting like the first clearly must have been...
Then, it happened.
I watched Harry Potter on Blu-ray, mind you my sub was in the repair shop(go figure), and that is when it happened. The speakers blew my mind even further than they had ever before. I was honestly afraid that the china on the shelf just a few feet away was going to rattle off. I clearly remember the stone walls separating in the movie and that my house felt it was about to separate as well. This is with the equalizer set to a flat response as all high quality recordings and playbacks should be set. That showmanship of the power these speakers can dish out made me realize that they were a better purchase than when I had feel in love with them after the first week of owning them.
Just make sure your source and song quality is good, and these speakers will put a smile on your face you cant wipe off. Except when the disturbance calls are made from across the street.
I would like to finish with the point also that I own two of them for left and right fronts, they are quite heavy, match well with Sony Bravia 40", and the sound quality is very clear. It is not easy to buy on the internet, but paired well and these speakers are well worth the price.

JBL On Tour Portable Speaker System ( Black ) Review

(More customer reviews)So far I've used the On Tour with my 8GB Sandisk Sansa - they make a perfect pair (looks too). The speakers are clear sounding, with pleasant bass and clear mid-highs (not tinny). They are used when we're traveling and based in a hotel room, and are a perfect alternative to headphones. Since they are not boom box sized, they're not going to fill a large room with sound, but for a small to mid-sized room they work just fine. I used to pack an old pair of computer speakers - these give me similar performance without the bulk.
I nixed a star because the AC adapter has to be stored separately, and has that thin wire that twists up too easily. Additionally JBL should have included a pouch for the AC adapter, but I'll improvise a solution. Overall highly recommended.

JBL CS6100BG High Performance, complete 6-Piece Home Theater Speaker System with Brackets (Black Gloss) Review

(More customer reviews)A few weeks back, I decided it was time to replace my 12 year old Sony TV and 17 year old "stereo" system with its two cheap speakers.
End result, after lots of research, was the purchase of the following, all from Amazon.
- Samsung LN40A650 LCD TV
- Onkyo TX-SR606
- JBL CS6100 6-Piece Home Cinema Speaker Package
- Logitech Harmony 550 Universal Remote
Also connected are;
- Scientific Atlanta cable set top box from Time Warner
- Sony SLV-D300P DVD/VCR which is 2-3 years old
- Nintendo Game Cube
Installation was in a 20'x30' room.
My goals were to have a high quality TV with decent sound, and keep the entire cost under $2500 if at all possible. Goal achieved, even with the purchase of the incidentals; some speaker wire, banana clips for speaker cables, an optical digital audio, cable, etc.
- Speakers... even if you go to all of the places you can visit to hear speakers, you have no idea how they will actually sound in your own environment. And, speakers are an object thing. My concerns here were that the only review I could find on the audiophile web sites was for the smaller CS480 speakers. the CD480s have a single woofer and tweeter in satellites vs. the dual woofers in the CS6100 package. The reviews of the CD480s indicated that they were a bit bright, a bit lacking in mid-range under some conditions. I don't find that to be the case with the CS6100s, maybe because of the dual woofers. Having all the mounting hardware in the box is a real plus, and they give you two choices of mounts, fixed and swivel. Enough high quality speaker wire in the box for a medium sized room. Sub-woofer speaker cable included. A nice, classy look as well..
The opening sequence from Top Gun (with the windows closed and the wife gone)was the first test. No disappointment here. Next, a bit of Opera. Again, they performned well. Country and classical music, movies with dialogue... these do a very nice job and compare VERY well with speakers which cost twice as much.
A definite "I'd buy again".

JBL ES250PBK 400-Watt High-Powered 12-Inch Subwoofer - Black Review

(More customer reviews)I originally was going to order the ES150PBk 200watt sub-woofer, but it was not going to be shipped until mid April. So I went with JBL's 300watt RMS (500Watt Peak) model. I paid $353.00 with a $30.00 off (for applying for an Amazon credit card) and this brought the price down to $323.00 with "free" super saver delivery. This unit will shake your living room during explosions in action movies (check out Pearl Harbor and Live Free, Die Young) and provides a nice, tight bass in music. I only have it turned up to just passed the mid-point & that is very loud. It is well designed, attractive, and you get more than your money's worth. You can not go wrong for this price! By the way, it does come with a removable black grill that is not pictured. I researched several other sub-woofers and none came close to providing the specs that this one does at this price and from such a well-established company. Last, but not least, JBL has been making speakers since the 1930's and is at the forefront of loudspeakers for the music industry. Because I am a tech savvy musician, I am well aware of JBL's reputation. So, in closing, rest assured that you are getting an outstanding product, through a trusted, reliable and reputable company at an outstanding price!!!

(More customer reviews)Let me start by saying that I couldn't be happier with these speakers. I did my homework when it was time to take my 6 year old HK SAT-TS2 5.1 system off the wall and make the next step toward turning my living room into a true cinema. Although I have the 6.1 capable Sony receiver and Blueray player (AKA PS3), I decided to stick with a 5.1 system due to the size limitation of my living room (13x16). My room was already wired, but the system does come with speaker wires and subwoofer cable. Another bonus are the two sets of speaker brackets. This system includes fixed (uni-directional swivel) and pivoting brackets for all the speakers. I also liked the departure from the spring clip connectors. These speakers have quality screw terminals that can handle a 10 gauge wire. The only issue I discovered was that the fixed bracket for the center speaker may create a short between the speaker wire terminals. A little electrical tape solved the problem and I was finally off to the races. HD TV, Dolby Digital 5.1 movies, and PS3 games have been raised to a new level with this system. Zero buyer's remorse!
