HP Pavilion Elite HPE-120F Desktop PC (Black) Review

HP Pavilion Elite HPE-120F Desktop PC (Black)

I recently purchased this machine because I needed a machine with greater power to do some high end rendering of my 3D artwork. This machine has more than filled this role, in fact it has surpassed it. I'm now able to render in mere minutes, what used to take days. I don't game, so this was never a consideration, but videos and streaming media play flawlessly. I've been able to multitask where previously I've had to use multiple computers. Windows 7 is a vast improvement over Vista, but still has a few minor incompatibilities, nothing major, and I've not yet bothered to research a fix for them, so they may be easily resolved.
All in all, for the price, I could not be more happy with the system. It runs quiet, and the built in wireless was a nice touch, as I've run out of ports on my router.

Instead of a review, I'm including an abridged version of a letter I sent to Mr Mark Hurd, the President of Hewlett Packard

Dear Mr. Hurd, On April 27 at 2 PM I received a Pavilion Elite Desktop that was defective and "dead in the box." I've been buying computers since 1992 and can accept this but not what followed. (Repair Order #803.........)
From 6 PM to midnight I talked to people in India whose English was barely intelligible making the process extremely difficult. They had me doing tests over and over and sitting on endless hold in between. This was incompetence. Around midnight I was asked to do a "System Restore?" and told by your Tech he would call back---he never did and I was to find that this is common.
On April 28, convinced that the problem was beyond the abilities of your offshore people and not wanting to go back to people I couldn't understand, who never called me back, and who put me on endless hold; I requested (per your guarantee) someone to make a housecall here in Seattle, which was denied. I tried to access American support to no avail and ended up calling Sales--at least they spoke English. They essentially told me "I was on my own" and I thought of the phrase--"Abandon hope all ye who enter here"
On April 29 I got your Filipino station and repeated the same process for hours. One particularly grating aspect was listening ad nausea to your parroted message about being able to get home service while I languished on endless hold. This is deceptive and a rotten lie. My machine was brand new----a fact that wasn't even noticed by your techs until the third day. After 20 hrs of my personal time had been chewed up, the dead machine was finally pronounced unfit and carted back by FedEx on April 30.
On May 1, in one final exhaustive attempt to throw salt in my wounds, I received an email double charging me, and my Visa card was billed an extra $50 to boot. Come on Mr. Hurd, you are a great big Fortune 500 company, how hard is it to fix these things.....things I would expect if this was a David Packard startup in his Palo Alto garage. Best Regards A---- E----

Post Script---Yes there is a post script to all this. Hewlett-Packard again sent me a brand new machine---machine #2. After the initial setup, I couldn't get on the Internet. Once again I called your techs in India (Repair order #------858----). After about 5 hours, including a "face to face" and the usual endless tests, I went to bed. Since I wasn't willing to spend another 20 hours on the phone I sent the machine back for a refund. Two bad machines in a row strains the credulity and the bounds of coincidence, but your people were merely sanguine about it all.

The original deal was that I gave HP a price they advertised and they gave me an operational Core i7 machine or they would come out and do an in-house repair. I felt cheated. I got my money back but lost 25+hours of my personal time. Hewlett Packard is a good example of a giant global faceless octopus of a company with ubiquitous advertising, cheap prices and shoddy rubbish products. One of the sales guys told me that if HP used American techs it would add $400 to each machine----so that's why Apples cost more?! Believe me Mr. Hurd, gone are the days I'll do business with HP again.

I bought this PC for a friend based on name brand and low price. While not an Intel CPU and only having 1 gig of RAM, this box is perfect for a budget user who want access to the Internet primarily for Email and browsing. It will get the job done. I added another Gig of RAM to help windoZe Vista to run faster/smoother, ran the Decrapifier to rid it of the commercial bloated software that is crammed into these name brand computers now a days, added a firewall and off it went. Great box for a spare also.

I bought this PC shortly after it came out, and it's been a perfect fit for what I wanted from my new computer. The windows 7 cd is included, and setting it up is fairly easy - just start it up with the cd in the drive, and follow the directions from there. Windows 7 boots up in just a couple seconds, compared to at least 30 seconds for my old pc.
The quad-core i5 chip is very fast, and great for multi-tasking. I have 2 monitors set up, and I usually have 4-5 programs running at a time - so far, the pc has never had a problem keeping up. It runs very quietly too.
I haven't tried it for games so you may want to research the video card that it comes with, if you're thinking of using it as a high-performance gaming pc (the card is an ATI Radeon HD 4550 PCIe x16 graphics card). It should be fine for most games. Anyway, I highly recommend this computer, it would be a great fit for home or as a business pc.

HP Pavilion P6110F Desktop PC Review

HP Pavilion P6110F Desktop PC

(More customer reviews)
I just recently bought this machine at my local Office Depot store, and it's a wonderful, cheap powerhouse. I had a couple reasons for choosing this machine, and there are them:
(1). Its processor is Intel branded. Because of bad experiences with AMD, I only buy Intel.
(2). It has expansion slots, AKA it is a big tower, not those tiny, unexpandible towers. This is good for when I want to upgrade the weakest point of this machine: The graphics card.
(3). Lightscribe disc labeling technology.
(4). Built-in card reader
(5). Price! At 500, it's a steal, [...]
(6). RAM! 6GB is godly... I couldn't ask for more.
(7). Hard drive space... 640GB is wonderful as well for a machine of this price tag.
There are a couple let-downs, here are them:
(1). Graphics card. It is a built in decroded POS, and has problems playing Halo 1. I plan on upgrading this though, which is why I bought the larger version of this machine.
(2). Preinstalled programs... HP has this as its major let down. However, you can SLOWLY remove everything, and I just installed the Windows 7 RC which erased everything, as well as make the machine faster!
Overall, this is a great machine for the price. No slow downs at all, pretty quiet (I have a netbook with an SSD so I'm pampered with quiet computers), and it just works. I recommend it to anyone!
More info; 9/27/09:
Machine is still running incredibly well! I have added the EVGA *LOW POWER* 9600GT graphics card (which barely fits ;) ). It can now play just about everything... And, the low power makes the PSU not as stressed (it's pretty weak as a PSU) but it's all still working great. I've also added an eSATA external HDD part, and everything's perfect. I'll update later with any problems!

This computer is a great value, I actually have purchased two. It has fit my needs exactly. I use them as Home Theater PC's connected to my 47" and 52" Flatscreens in different rooms of the house.
But potential buyers would probably appreciate knowing certain things ahead of time, so I would like to share some of those with you. A couple things I noticed, which are not things they neglect to include on spec sheets, were no extra Serial ATA connections on the mother board, thus no extra SATA Hard Drive, or Blu-ray Burner with SATA and things of that nature.
The good news is it does have two open IDE connections, which in my case worked out perfectly.. I had an old Seagate 250GB IDE, set the IDE as master on the jumper settings, connect it to the blue IDE connection on the mother board, boot the computer, enter bios, simply change the boot sequence in the BIOS because it will default to boot from the IDE Hard Drive when it is added(so if you get a OS not found message at first don't freak out).
Also, (this is stated on the spec sheets) there are only 1PCIx16 and three regular PCI slots.
So choose your upgrades wisely. Other than the added IDE HD, i've added the PNY - NVIDIA GeForce 9600 GT 512MB PCI Express DDR3 for Graphics, and a Swann PCI DVR 4 Camera input security card with software. I plan on using the other PCI slot for possibly a sound card, or wireless card if the PC ever gets moved away from the router. I'm not saying the computer comes up short on any of the specs, just that some of the things that they don't mention, and you find out after you purchase it. Just thought I would share what i've noticed after buying a couple of them.
Sorry for the long review, but I figured the more the better in this case.
Cheers

Focusing on affordability, this desktop provides room to grow with the ability to add up to 4 GB of RAM, available PCI and expansion slots, and access to a wide variety of peripherals via its six USB 2.0. It's also chock-full of security and productivity software to get you going as soon as the PC's unpacked from its box, including Symantec Norton Internet Security 2009 and Microsoft Works 9. You can also easily burn your home video productions to DVD for friends and family with the 16x dual-layer, multi-format LightScribe DVD/CD burner, which enables you to store up to 8.5 GB of data on a DL disc.
Other features include a 2.3 GHz AMD Athlon X2 4450e+ dual-core processor, 250 GB hard drive, 3 GB of installed RAM (4 GB maximum), Nvidia GeForce 6150 SE video card with up to 1343 MB of allocated video memory, and 6-channels of surround sound audio. It comes preinstalled with Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium (Service Pack 1), which includes all of the Windows Media Center capabilities for turning your PC into an all-in-one home entertainment center. In addition to easily playing your DVD movies and managing your digital audio library, you'll be able to record and watch your favorite TV shows (even HDTV). Vista also integrates new search tools throughout the operating system, includes new parental control features, and offers new tools that can warn you of impending hardware failures.

The Basics

Processor: AMD's Athlon X2 4450e+ dual-core processor: Dual-core technology is like having two processors working together, each one taking care of different applications, so power-users actually experience greater performance when multiple applications are running. Digital media enthusiasts will appreciate the enhancements while simultaneously working in high-definition video and photo editing and audio mixing programs. It includes such AMD features as HyperTransport Technology (which increases the communication between integrated circuits) and Enhanced Virus Protection.
This 2.3 GHz processor offers a system bus with speeds up to a blazing 2000 MHz and each core offers a 512 KB L2 cache--for a 1 MB total. (An L2, or secondary, cache temporarily stores data; and a larger L2 cache can help speed up your system's performance. The FSB carries data between the CPU and RAM, and a faster front-side bus will deliver better overall performance.)

Hard Drive: The generous 250 GB Serial ATA (SATA) hard drive (7200 RPM) offers a wealth of storage space, perfect for storing a vast multimedia collection or for editing digital video. This SATA hard drive has a 3Gb/s interface speed that enables up to 300MB/s data transfer rates (double the speed of the current SATA interface of 1.5Gb/s).

Memory: The 3 GB of installed RAM (1 x 1 G, 1 x 2 GB; PC2-6400) will more than satisfy your multimedia needs, but you still have room to add more RAM to handle today's demanding computational needs. This desktop has a 4 GB maximum RAM capacity (2 x 2 GB). It also offers a lightning quick 800 MHz RAM speed.

DVD/CD Drive: This multiformat DVD/CD drive is compatible with writing both DVD+ and DVD- disc formats as well as dual-layer (DL) DVD+/-R discs, which can store up to 8.5 GB of data. It features 12x DVD±R DL Write Once, 16x DVD±R, 8x DVD+RW, 6x DVD-RW, 12x DVD-RAM, 40x CD-R, 32x CD-RW write speeds and 40x CD-ROM, and 16x DVD-ROM read speeds.
This LightScribe DVD±RW drive lets you laser-etch silkscreen quality text and images on to CDs and DVDs . Your software, PC and discs work together for a no-hassle way to burn just the labels you want. After you burn content, just flip the disc over, reinsert and burn your label--anything from a simple title to a full-disc work of art.

Keyboard & Mouse: It comes with a Compaq keyboard and scroller mouse (both with PS/2 connections).
Video & Audio This desktop features an integrated Nvidia GeForce 6150 SE graphics/video card with 128 MB of dedicated graphics memory. Windows Vista can also allocate up to 1343 MB of total graphics memory from the system memory. It features NVidia's PureVideo technology--which provides great picture clarity, smooth video, accurate color, and precise image scaling for video content--and full support for Microsoft DirectX 9.0 for stunningly realistic cinematic effects for all DirectX-compatible applications. It also offers an integrated audio card that can produce high definition surround sound configurable to 8 speakers.
Networking, Connectivity & Expansion For expansion, this desktop has two PCI slots (one available), one PCI Express x16 slot (available), one PCI Express x1 slot (available), two 5.25-inch bays (one available), three 3.5-inch bays (two available). It comes with the following external connections:

6 USB 2.0 ports for connecting a wide range of peripherals--from digital cameras to MP3 players (2 in front, 4 in rear)
2 PS/2 ports for connecting keyboards and mice
1 VGA monitor port
1 headphone (front)
1 microphone/line-in/line-out (rear)
10/100 Ethernet
56K modem (V.90)

Operating System Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium with SP1 (32-bit) is the operating system for users with advanced computer needs, and it includes all of the Windows Media Center capabilities for turning your PC into an all-in-one home entertainment center for watching DVD movies and accessing your digital audio library. You can also use Windows Media Center to record and watch your favorite TV shows (even HDTV) and to access new kinds of online entertainment content. Computers that include Windows Vista Home Premium and an auxiliary Windows SideShow display will also allow you to access key data even when your computer is off. It is also easier than ever to share files between other PCs in your household and to manage your laptop computer settings to more securely connect via Wi-Fi.

Every edition of Windows Vista provides the essential tools and technologies to help protect you whether you are browsing the Internet, connecting to a wireless network, or just reading e-mail. All editions of Windows Vista include new tools that can warn you of impending hardware failures long before you have lost any important personal data. Dell Studio XPS sx8100-3007NBC Desktop (Piano Black)

I have had this computer for some time now, and it's totally AMAZING. I have had HP's, Sony's and Dells, and the Dell computer systems are by far the most reliable.
I did upgrade the memory to 12gB, but that's the only change I made to the stock system.
I run two monitors, which is awesome--a 24" sidescreen and a 17". I keep my email open on the 17", and use the 24 for applications. This way I can keep my eye on emails if they come in while I'm working on something else.
I run high memory user programs, like Photoshop, iTunes, and various Office apps. I usually have many windows open in my browser (I do use Explorer because of how it integrate with the other apps). I run Norton 360 (the full version) antivirus. I have TRIED to overload this machine, just to see how it would react, but even with all of these applications/programs, I can't do it.
I have never had an issue with setup of hardware, with updates, etc. I have had 3 printers hooked up at once, and a multi-page document scanner. I have wireless keyboard and mouse (Logitech gaming) and multiple pieces of hardware from webcam to cell phone (smartphone HTC Touch Pro2) to 2 different iPods. I have never had any issues, never had a glitch or a hangup.
I really feel like I have put this thing through the paces (for my sort of apps--I don't do gaming) and it's come up golden.
I love this computer!

Ordered this from Amazon, and I have to say, I'm really liking this computer!
I had it for about a month, using it every day. I left it on at times and I did several tests to make sure everything worked. I'll break it down with my experience, maybe it'll help some people out.*Processor: Phenom x4 840T
This is a newer AMD processor, an OEM only processor. So far it has handled everything I've thrown at it. I can run multiple things a once without a slowdown. It's not silent, I always hear the faint fan sound, but it's not loud. I love this processor! I get a 7.3 in the Windows Experience Index.
*Hard Drive: Hitachi HDS721010CLA332
1 Terabytes is more than enough for me. Lots of space! I read reviews online about this hard drive, and they have been on the positive side. I am happy HP used a good hard drive. The sound is on the lower end, not a loud hard drive at all. It gives me a 5.9 in the Windows Experience Index.
*Optical Drive: Samsung TS-H65SR
I could not find any reviews about this DVD drive. It is a basic drive on the cheap end. It is not noisy at all, except for when installing programs or running at top speed, which is normal. I have experienced bad DVD drives before from Dell that sounded like a helicopter when they were in use, and that is no exaggeration! So I am happy to recieve a "normal" DVD drive. Programs install faster than on my older XP computer, I haven't done too much burning yet, but speed times are equally good.
*Memory: 6 gigabytes
I wasn't able to see the maker of the memory. 6 gigabytes is more than enough for me. It gives me a 7.4 in the Windows Experience Index.
*Wireless Lan Card: Ralink
I won't be using the wireless at all for the moment. I did test the Ralink lan card out, and it worked like it should. An antenna is also included. I can't speak for using it for long periods of time.
*Power Supply: 250 Watts
This is a very cheap low wattage power supply. If you want to add more drives or a video card, you'll want to get a new power supply. It makes a low buzzing sound when it's fan is running on low, but you can only hear it if you are close to the computer. At full speed the fan sounds normal.
*Integrated Video: Radeon 4200
Not very good. While it's good for basic usage, you'll need a new video card if you want to do anything involving high detailed graphics. This thing barely runs graphics from 5 years ago. Graphics and Gaming were low in the Windows Experience Index, I only got a 4.3 and 5.4 on it.
*Keyboard and Mouse: HP
Both are wired and are the basic cheap kind. The keyboard is the new flat style, with the keys being more flat than sticking out like on the old keyboards. The optical mouse is a regular 2 button with a wheel. I prefer the old keyboards, but these both are just fine for basic use. I do like the look of the mouse, looks stylish!
*Software included:
People usually call extra programs installed with new computers "bloatware", it usually involves programs most people don't want. This does have some programs already installed, but it is not much at all. Only a few e-readers, 60 days free of Norton, Cyberlink to help you burn disc's, and a few extra games from Wildtagent.
If any of the programs are not wanted, they can be uninstalled within a few minutes, then can be forgotten about. They are however very good for a new computer user.
I have to mention the software HP included. I have been using Windows since Windows 95, and I have never, not once, ever used the "Help and Support" that's been included with Windows. However, looking at this one, it is truly wonderful how they have it. They have a link that goes directly to the product page on their web site with lots of useful details, I can run some diagnostic tests on the computer, and it has other useful tools and information. I really like the programs HP has included, I find them very useful.~Note!
You can only create 1 set of recovery discs. Make sure to do it soon after you first turn on your computer. Once you create them, store them in a safe place. You can always order them from HP too if it's ever needed. I'd rather get a set of discs with the computer like they use to come with, but to be honest, I really don't mind creating a set like this.~UPGRADES!
I bought a power supply and video card seperately to go with this computer. I got this power supply OCZ OCZ500MXSP ModXStream Pro 500 Watt Power Supply and this video card Sapphire Radeon HD5770 Vapor-X 1 GB DDR5 2DVI/HDMI/DisplayPort PCI-Express Video Card 100283VX-2L.
Installing them both was very easy. HP is great when it comes to having user friendliness in adding more components to the computer, I just discovered this and I love it. They have many guides and pictures on their web site showing how to add new hardware, even in the case it has little diagrams to show you how to remove something. If I compare removing a power supply from this HP, and from a new Dell, HP wins big! I love how the case is designed too, much nicer than the typcial computer cases you'd find today.
After adding the new video card, my Windows Experience Index in the graphics section jumped up from 4.3 and 5.4, to 7.4. A big jump! A video card was definitly needed for me.With my new power supply and video card added to the computer, I am very happy with this purchase. If it lasts a long time without breaking down(oh I do hope it doesn't, please don't break), then this will be ones of the best computer purchases I have made in quite some time.
