(More customer reviews)I obtained one of these units off-lease, with a keyboard and mouse. The RAM had
been replaced with cheaper and incorrect ECC 512Mb because they took out the HP
memory modules and sold them to get more money out of the unit. The case for it
weighs a ton, about 43 lbs. shipped. It is also one of the most difficult cases
to work with removing and installing CD/DVD, floppy and other drives.
So what's a technician to do with this otherwise fast, good performing desktop?
Refurbish it is the way to go. I put it into a Cooler Master Elite 342 MATX case
because it is a uATX motherboard. To add the slot expansion card would have been
too expensive to make it into an ATX form factor. New thermal compound is applied
and the motherboard wired into the new case. Add a new DVD-RW and FDD, now I have
something decent to work with. It also has an internal speaker, rare these days. I
mounted it in the front of the new case. The BIOS was upgraded. Finding the right
memory modules for this computer was not easy because it is VERY picky about the
kinds of modules that will work, especially in dual-channel mode. Corsair has the
right DDR2 non-ECC dual-channel module kits, so it now has 2Gb RAM, can go to 4Gb.
It also has a hardware reset switch now, didn't come with it in the HP case.
This is a very fast PC now. It eats through malware scans in minutes instead of
over an hour like before. I installed McAfee AntiVirus Plus and Webroot SpySweeper
for anti-virus and spyware protection, respectively. McAfee also has a decent soft-
ware firewall, McAfee Personal Firewall, hence the Plus in the name. I've optimized
this unit for security using IE7, Windows Firewall, McAfee and Webroot. Buy mine!
