(More customer reviews)There are several proven ways to boost cell phone signals. Some US wireless carriers provide a solution of their own, including MicroCell (AT&T), Network Extender (Verizon), and Airave (Sprint). These products are often cheaper but not designed for portable use, does not work with other phones from other carriers, require broadband Internet access, and for Sprint, require additional monthly plan.
CelLynx 5BARz Road Warrior addresses all the previous issues. Included in the box are: extender (smaller than most WiFi routers), car cigarette adapter/stand, AC adapter (for indoor use), phone holder, iGo universal charging cable, and 4-page instructions manual. Phone holder can be used to hold your phone in the car as well as at home. It has adjustable clasps to securely hold various phones, such as iPhone, Blackberry, and Nokia. Rear stand is very fragile, however. It comes off very easily when opening.
Setting up 5BARz is very easy, but 4-page manual omits many important details. According to the manual, all you have to do is connect the unit to the power source, phone holder into the unit, then slide the ON switch on the phone holder.
What it does not mention:
1. Charging your phone: To charge your phone, you have two options. (1) Purchase iGo adapter designed for your phone model, then attach it to included iGo-to-USB cable or (2) if your phone uses USB for charging, plug the cable directly into the holder's USB port. For instance, iPhone users can use the standard Dock Connector to USB Cable.
2. Operating radius: 5BARz is effective only when your phones are within 2 feet from the holder, which doubles as an antenna. In addition, it needs at least a bit of usable signal to work (1 bar).
3. Carrier compatibility: While the manual mentions frequencies, many of us don't know which frequencies correspond to which wireless carriers and phone models. 5BARz can boost 850 MHz (a.k.a., cellular 850) and 1900 MHz (a.k.a., PCS) signals used by 2G and 3G phones from AT&T, Sprint, Verizon, and many smaller US carriers. It will boost these signal by up to 45 dB, which in most cases, should register on your phone as 3 to 5 bars. 5BARz is NOT compatible with AT&T's 4G (700 MHz block B), Sprint's 4G (2500 MHz, a.k.a., IMT-E), and T-Mobile's 3G (1700 and 2100 MHz, a.k.a., AWS), and Verizon's 4G (700 MHz block C).
I have the original iPhone (2G) and my wife iPhone 3GS. In both cases, the signal rarely dropped below 3 bars, typically hovering between 4 and 5 bars. Setting the phone in field testing mode (triggered by dialing *3001#12345#* on the iPhone), the signal strength increased from between -75 to -95 db range to -65 to -75 dB range.
5BARz did not interfere with WiFi router in our home (a/b/g/n).
My only major complaint is the operating radius. Keeping the phones within 2 feet radius can be challenging for indoor use and in larger cars such as minivan. The manufacturer recommends using a Bluetooth headset as a workaround, but that isn't always ideal, especially for data and messaging use. Products from wireless carriers have much bigger coverage range and often cost less. But if you need portability and/or multi-carrier compatibility, 5BARz is an ideal solution that works.
