This case works as a small file server, but it neither comes with nor documents the cables needed to connect its backplane to the diagnostics of a RAID array.
With all four fans running, it can be rather loud. If the installed motherboard supports 4-pin fan modes, it can be quiet for a server, but the fans seem to constantly spin up and down even when all internal components are well below their spec operating temperature.
The backplane supports only SATA drives and connects only with standard SATA cables -- smart cables that combine 4 or 8 ports in one will not work.
As always with a Supermicro case, use only a Supermicro motherboard. It is "possible" to use another brand, but it will be painful. All cable lengths and component positions assume standard Supermicro layouts.
As with most Supermicro cases, the power supply fan runs for some reason even when the system is off. I suspect Supermicro thought this was a clever way to keep it cool when powered components (such as USB devices and network cards) are running, but it's frankly unnecessary -- a few watts of power usage are hardly going to overheat the power supply.
