I was a little skeptical about how much of a difference an SSD could really make but this has improved my work flow immeasurably. This is coming from someone who was running dual raptors in a RAID-0 array...
I've personally had a steady ~100GB hard drive usage for the past 4 years, so 240GB is plenty for my needs and the speed of this drive is just great.
I have been using it quite a lot for the past 3 weeks and I haven't experienced any slow downs.
Apps like photoshop, illustrator and maya launch in 4s flat from a cold start.
I looked at other SSD drives but in most reviews this one was within 5% of the top performers but it costs 10-15% less per gigabyte. The only one that showed significant performance advantages required an SATA 3 interface which my new iMac doesn't have anyway so it wasn't a hard decision.
Corsair has a good reputation for reliability in their RAM and power sopplies, but I can't yet vouch for my SSD's longevity.

ASUS UL50VS-A1B 15.6-Inch Black Laptop (Windows 7 Professional) Review

ASUS UL50VS-A1B 15.6-Inch Black Laptop (Windows 7 Professional)
Average Reviews:

This laptop is slick. I purchased this to replace a failing four year old Macbook. With a battery life of around eleven hours in a low power mode, the laptop is ultra-portable. Kicking into a higher performance mode takes a few seconds and leaves you with a little under half of the maximum battery life. The touchpad is a bit unconventional and I'm still getting used to it. It is completely level with the surface of the laptop and I have found my fingers like to wander off the edges of the usable area. The instant-on splashtop was a nice surprise. I wasn't even aware of the functionality when I purchased the computer. The applications are very basic and the music player rates pretty low on the intuitive features list but it does play music after you have your playlists set up. Though it is fairly big, it's just as thin and lightweight. I don't plan to do any serious gaming on the computer, but I do play EVE. It ran quite well with the G210M on. I have only had this product for about a day but so far I'm very happy with it.

Apple MacBook Pro MB991LL/A 13.3-Inch Laptop Review

Apple MacBook Pro MB991LL/A 13.3-Inch Laptop
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is my first Mac computer. My first four computers ran Win 3.1, Windows 95, XP, and Vista (from about 1995-present). I have quite a lot of time spent on each of them. Switching from Windows to Mac is not difficult, but it can be a bit frustrating for a week or so. There are Windows features that you will miss, but they are mostly overcome by overall advantages in my opinion.
I've spent two weeks with this machine now. If I had written this review after one day, I would have probably stated that I regretted the switch to Mac. After getting more proficient with the machine and realizing how well it works, I would definitely recommend it to a friend.
This review is going to be a mix of my impressions of both the hardware and the Mac operating system from a new Mac user perspective.
The only difference between my machine and the one on this product page is that I ordered directly from Apple and upgraded the hard drive to 250GB (from the 160GB base option). I am using 2gb of ram and the lower-end processor.
My Mac OS impressions:
The biggest thing I missed from Windows at first was the task bar. Mac uses the "dock" to replace the task bar. The dock is kind of like the quick launch toolbar in Windows spread out across the entire bar, with large icons. Having used windows with a task bar for the past 13 years, I missed the ability to see all open programs and switch between them with the task bar. The dock has a tiny dot below the icon on running-programs, but nothing else to separate it from other program and folder icons. The dock is not nearly as useful for multitasking as the task bar.
The saving grace that rescues the Mac from awkward app-switching while multitasking is called expose. Expose is activated by either pressing a key or using a multitouch gesture (four-finger swipe). Expose uses the entire screen to display all open windows and allow you to switch between them. It's like alt+tab on steroids. Having used the machine for a couple weeks, I miss using expose when I use my Windows machine. As much as I hated the dock at first, I have to give the advantage to the Mac for managing multiple windows while multitasking.
The controls for open-windows are quite different than in MS-Windows. In Mac, there is a resize, hide, and minimize button instead of maximize, minimize, restore, and close. To close an app on the mac you need to use a menu command or keyboard shortcut. The Mac resize button kind of works like restore/maximize, only it's a bit more awkward. A commenter here pointed out that it resizes the window for ideal viewing without using the entire screen. I find myself resizing windows by dragging corners more than I ever did on a Windows machine. I really miss the ability to maximize, if for no other reason but to avoid distractions. The green resize button may be better on an enormous monitor, but not on a 13" notebook. When you minimize or hide an app on the Mac, it is only available from the dock and is hidden from expose. I'll give the window size-management advantage to Windows in this contest. The windows system is just easier and more logical in my opinion. It isn't a deal-breaker, but I do miss the Windows "window controls." If you are a frequent user of the F11 key while web browsing in Windows you'll have to kiss that feature goodbye. Neither Firefox nor Safari will go full-screen.
Windows Explorer is "replaced" with an app called Finder. Finder is kind of like the start menu and an explorer window all rolled up into one. Compared with older versions of Windows, finder is adequate but Vista's explorer is quite a bit easier and more logical to use. I prefer Vista's preview pane to Mac's coverflow. I miss the "up folder" button. I have found myself mostly using the view that puts files, folders and apps into a column view for easiest computer browsing, and it just isn't as elegant as Windows Vista. The lack of a maximize button has caused frustration especially in the finder, because the finder likes to stay in a very small window unless you drag the corners.
The Safari web browser is nice and quick and has a decent security reputation. I have been switching back and forth between Safari and Firefox. Firefox has crashed a couple of times and I really like being able to use multitouch gestures with Safari, so I'm leaning toward making Safari my main web tool. Reading RSS feeds, and the bookmark toolbar are really well done in Safari. Browsers are so personal that it's difficult to recommend one over the other, but as a Firefox user in Windows I think I have high standard and Safari has met or exceeded them.
I absolutely hate the iPhoto app. Iphoto does not allow you to organize and browse your photos in folders. It imports your pictures and sorts them itself based on time/date stamps on the photos. This works fine for personal vacation snapshots but it completely mixed up the rest of my images. Folders that were neatly organized for work projects, and fun web clippings, and adult stuff were all shuffled into one big mess after I imported my image collection. I ended up just deleting all of them and not using iphoto at all. Right now I'm just using Finder to browse my photos and the preview app to view them. Light editing work isn't possible in the preview app and I still haven't decided what to use for a basic photo editor yet. Vista's photo app is junk but it's still superior to iPhoto if you like to keep your photos organized using your own folder system. I know people who love iphoto. It comes down to whether you want the ability to organize your collection yourself. If you have a big mess of photos, you'll love iphoto's ability to organize them via event and face recognition.
Edited to add: you can organize your photos into "albums" after you import them into iPhoto, but be prepared to spend a lot of time reorganizing everything. Even after you organize into albums, the main library screen gives you views of your entire collection (perhaps things you don't want everyone to see).
I have not used Garage Band or iMovie yet. I'll update later when I get a chance.
Edited to add: I played with garage band a bit and it's pretty powerful. It allows you to import and export AAC and MP3 tracks and record sound in multiple tracks. Very easy to use. The only other audio app i've ever used is audacity and I much prefer Garage Band. I haven't used any of the music lessons it offers yet but plan to soon.
I played with iMovie for a few minutes and it seems pretty nice and very intuitive. I actually don't mind Windows Movie Maker, which is included with Vista. I would not consider it a big step up from Win Movie Maker, but it's a nice app.
The mail, calendar, and address book apps are basic but work very very well. The address app will import common file types easily. It will sync with yahoo out of the box. Address book will only sync with Google contacts if you own an iPhone or iPod Touch.
Everyone has an opinion about iTunes. I'm a big fan of it. It's exactly like the windows version only it runs a bit faster without the bugs. If you have an iPhone or iPod touch, the Windows-iTunes bug with time/date being wrong after the computer sleeps is not an issue on the Mac.
Time machine is the Mac's backup app. It is amazing and very simple. I'm using an external drive plugged into my Apple Airport wireless router, as a backup disk. My wireless disk showed up on my desktop instantly once I plugged it into the router. Time machine noticed the external drive right away and went to work backing up my files (after asking permission of course). Now my machine automatically backs up any changes every hour as long as I'm in range of my wireless access point. Time machine is a big load off my mind. If I ever have a drive failure or my computer is destroyed I have an exact backup of everything without remembering to backup my files. Vista will backup according to a set schedule, but it lacks the ability to easily look through backups for specific files. Time machine is wonderful and make wireless backup effortless.
The Mac disk utility is almost as good as the one in Vista and it's easier to use. It's far superior to the one in XP. I used it to format my external wireless drive because the Mac router couldn't read NTFS formating (although the computer can read NTFS drives via USB for some reason).
The graphics control software is a joy to use. When I plug in my external monitor it immediately extends my desktop to the new monitor. Adjusting everything from resolution to rotation couldn't be any easier.
Boot camp is a utility that allows you to create a partition and install Windows as a secondary boot system (you need to own or buy a legal single-disk 32bit copy of either Windows XP or Windows Vista). When you start up the boot camp utility, it gives you a choice between using either 5 or 32 GB of space for the Windows partition. I learned the hard way that Windows XP SP3 won't fit into 5GB. You need to give it at least the 32 GB (which left me with almost exactly 200GB on my "250" GB drive). Installing Windows using the Boot Camp utility is very very easy. Once you get Windows loaded, your OSX install disk makes quick work of installing drivers for all of your laptop's hardware. It's too bad that Nvidia and HP aren't as good at putting together easy Windows driver packages as Apple. In order to boot into Windows, you simply press the "option" key during bootup and it allows you to choose which OS to run. Windows XP absolutely screams on this hardware.
The hardware:
The hardware is where this computer really shines.
The biggest advantage is...Read more›

Featuring a precision unibody enclosure crafted from a single block of aluminum, the MacBook Pro is thinner and lighter than its predecessor as well as stronger and more durable. But Apple didn't stop innovating with the body's design. The MacBook Pro also includes a new 13-inch, LED-backlit glass display (instead of an LCD panel) as well as a glass trackpad that doesn't include a button (for larger tracking area) that features Apple's Multi-Touch technology.

This 13-inch MacBook Pro (model MB991LL/A) also now includes Apple's innovative built-in notebook battery for up to 7 hours of wireless productivity on a single charge without adding thickness, weight or cost. Using Adaptive Charging and advanced chemistry first introduced with the 17-inch MacBook Pro the built-in battery delivers up to 1000 recharges before it reaches 80 percent of its original capacity--nearly three times the lifespan of conventional batteries.

Under the hood, the MacBook Pro is powered by a powerful 2.53 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor (with 3 MB L2 cache and 1066 MHz front-side bus), which runs applications faster and more efficiently as well as helps to reduce power requirements and save on battery life. And video is powered by the NVIDIA GeForce 9400M integrated graphics processor, which provides an outstanding everyday graphics experience with up to a 5x performance boost.

Other hardware features include a 250 GB hard drive, 4 GB of installed RAM (which can be upgraded to 8 GB), an 8x combo Superdrive (for burning dual-layer DVDs as well as CDs), built-in Gigabit Ethernet for high-speed networking, Bluetooth 2.1+EDR (Enhanced Data Rate), FireWire 800 port, Mini DisplayPort video output (for DVI and VGA connections), and a Secure Digital card slot for easy access to digital photos and audio stored on SD and MMC memory cards.

It comes pre-loaded with Apple's Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard operating system--an operating system custom-designed for the advanced technology inside--and it also comes with the iLife '09 suite of applications, including iPhoto, iMovie, Garageband, and iTunes.

The Unibody MacBook Pro Design Traditionally notebooks are made from multiple parts. With the MacBook Pro all of those parts with just one part--the breakthrough unibody enclosure. Every MacBook Pro starts its life as a single block of aluminum, which is precisely machined into the basic unibody design. Another pass and the unibody takes shape. Another, and the integrated keyboard emerges. When you pick up a new MacBook Pro, you immediately notice the entire enclosure is thinner and lighter. And it feels strong and durable--perfect for life inside (and outside) your briefcase or backpack.

The standard aluminum electro-static trackpad has been replaced with a new glass Multi-Touch trackpad, which provides 40 percent more tracking area than before. Use two fingers to scroll up and down a page. Pinch to zoom in and out. Rotate an image with your fingertips. Swipe with three fingers to flip through your photo libraries. Swipe with four fingers to show your desktop, view all open windows, or switch applications. The entire trackpad surface is also a button, allowing you to both track and click virtually anywhere on the trackpad. And you can easily enable multiple virtual buttons in software, such as right-clicking.

The keyboard has also been improved, with the rigid aluminum keyboard webbing cut precisely to hold the keys, which are curved to perfectly fit fingers. And it's illuminated, so when you're in low-light settings, such as airplanes or conference rooms, you can always see what you're typing.

The 13-inch display is made of edge-to-edge, uninterrupted glass for a smooth, seamless surface and features LED backlighting for brilliant instant-on performance that uses up to 30 percent less energy than its predecessor. The ultra-thin displays provide crisp images and vivid colors which are ideal for viewing photos and movies

Long-Lasting Battery The 13-inch MacBook Pro now includes a newly engineered lithium-polymer battery that that lasts up to 7 hours on a single charge thanks to advanced chemistry, intelligent monitoring of the system and battery, and Adaptive Charging technology. The battery is built right into the computer, eliminating the space-consuming mechanisms and housings that standard removable batteries require. This non-removable battery also provides a longer battery lifespan of up to 1000 recharges--meaning fewer depleted batteries and less waste, which is better for the environment.

Giving it a lifespan of up to 1000 recharges required breakthroughs in battery technology. Apple electro-chemists developed advanced chemistry that maintains the battery's charging capabilities longer than ever. And while most notebooks wear down their batteries by charging them at a constant rate, the 13-inch MacBook Pro takes a different approach. Using an Apple-developed technology called Adaptive Charging, a microchip on the battery constantly communicates with the computer to determine the optimal way to charge its cells, adjusting the current up and down depending on a variety of conditions. Combined, these advancements offer a dramatic improvement in battery lifespan: more than three times the lifespan of typical notebook batteries--up to five years.

Intel Core 2 Duo Processor Experience improved energy efficiency, expanded wireless connectivity, and amazing battery life with the 2.53 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor, which has a super-fast 1066 MHz front-side bus (FSB), and an large 3 MB L2 cache. (An L2, or secondary, cache temporarily stores data; and a larger L2 cache can help speed up your system's performance. The FSB carries data between the CPU and RAM, and a faster front-side bus will deliver better overall performance.)

The hafnium-infused circuitry--which reduces electrical current leakage in transistors--conserves even more energy, giving you more time away from the wall outlet. With 3 MB of shared L2 cache, data and instructions can be kept close to the two processor cores, greatly increasing performance and allowing the entire system to work more efficiently. And, because the processor cores share the L2 cache, either can use the entire amount if the other happens to be idle.

Video Processing & Output The MacBook Pro delivers both powerful graphics performance and long battery life via the NVIDIA GeForce 9400M integrated graphics processor, which provides an outstanding everyday graphics experience with up to a 5x performance boost. Power your way through the latest 3D games--including Call of Duty and Quake--and enjoy improved graphics performance with iWork '09, iLife '09, and everything you do in Mac OS X. The power-saving NVIDIA integrated graphics processor also keeps you up and running throughout the day, with up to 7 hours of battery life.

The MacBook Pro includes a next generation Mini DisplayPort, which delivers a pure digital signal that can drive up to a 30-inch widescreen display. The Mini DisplayPort is ultra-compact at just 10 percent the size of a full DVI connector, and is compatible with Apple's 24-inch Cinema Display. Adapters are also available for using VGA, DVI/HDMI and Dual-Link DVI displays

Hard Drive and Memory The 250 GB Serial-ATA (SATA) hard drive (5400 RPM) quickens the pace with a higher speed transfer of data--akin to USB 2.0. The 4 GB of PC3-8500 DDR3 RAM (two SO-DIMMs of 1024 MB) has an industry-leading 1066 MHz speed, and the RAM capacity can be increased to 8 GB.

Wireless Connectivity The built-in 802.11n wireless networking provides up to five times the performance and twice the range of 802.11g, but it's also backward-compatible with 802.11a/b/g routers, enabling you to communicate with the a wide variety of Wi-Fi resources. It works seamlessly with the new AirPort Extreme with 802.11n. Use the built-in Bluetooth wireless technology to connect to your PDA or cell phone, synchronize addresses, or download pictures from your cell phone. You can also use a wireless headset for iChat audio chats and VoIP calls as well as quickly share files with a colleague.

Video Conferencing with Built-in iSight Artfully placed in the glass display is an iSight camera, which enables easy video conferencing as well as allows you to snap pictures of yourself and create video podcasts. Using the iChat AV application, video conferencing is integrated into your iChat buddy list, so initiating a video conference is a breeze. iChat also lets you hold audio chats with up to 10 people and provides high-quality audio compression and full-duplex sound so conversation can flow naturally. For video podcasting, you can record a short clip using the iSight camera, then use iWeb to create a video blog entry or post your GarageBand-recorded podcast.

Environmental Considerations Apple has worked hard to eliminate many of the toxins that are a common part of computer manufacturing. Apple engineers removed the majority of brominated flame retardants (BFRs) and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) from circuit boards, internal cables, connectors, insulators, adhesives, and more in the MacBook Pro.

Because Apple makes both the hardware and the software for the MacBook, they're designed to work together to produce a smarter product that uses less electricity. For instance, to reduce energy consumption, the hard drive spins down automatically when inactive. MacBook Air also decides which processor--CPU or GPU--is best suited to efficiently perform a task. The LED-backlit display in the MacBook Pro is another feature that plays an important part in conserving energy, consuming 30 percent less power than conventional LCD displays. And the display is designed to dim when you enter a darkened room.

The MacBook Pro meets the stringent low power requirements set by the EPA, giving it ENERGY STAR certification. MacBook also meets the latest efficiency requirements of ENERGY STAR Version 5.0 Specification for Computers before its July 2009 effective date.

The MacBook Pro has also earned the highest rating of EPEAT Gold. The Electronic Product Environmental Assessment Tool, or EPEAT, evaluates the environmental impact of a product based on how recyclable it is, how much energy it uses, and how it's designed and manufactured.

This is my first time writing a review.
GOOD:
Can play COD:MW2, TF2 in high setting :)
For first time , I actually liked the build quality of this Acer.
Its light weight :O
BAD: I wish it had i5,blu-ray
UGLY: Nothin till now :)
THOUGHTS :-
Intially I was planning to buy another Acer with nvidia GT330M(GT 420M is quite similar in performance )which was 100 buck less with same config.
Why I prefer to take this one ?
- OPTIMUS, this technology is awesome , battery showed me around 4-5hrs
- GT420M , which means DX11 :) (Its a CLASS 2 GFX)
- Dolby digital
- Extra HDD and RAM
BUT:-
I can easily feel hot air(mild) coming from vent within 3-4min of gameplay.I suggest to use laptop cooling pad.
FINALLY:-
Its a great product and very stable. I think it will have a price reduction and that will piss me off since I am the 1st customer at amazon...lol.
I am no brand-conscious guy , I wanna play game this was the cheapest available when I bought it , I GOT IT !

Acer EV.MA40C.001 32-Inches 1080p LCD TV Review

I use long wide spreadsheets every day and the scrolling back and forth was too tedious so I bought this TV to use as a computer monitor. It is awesome for this purpose. Now I can fit a lot more spreadsheet on my 1920x1080 than I could on my 1280x800. The screen is bright and the colors are great. Movies look nice too. Best of all, it is a steal of a deal. This was the lowest priced 1080p 32" TV (or monitor) I could find, and at $399 it is well worth it.
The setup menu is pretty basic, and the graphics for it are pretty plain, but hey you don't see them very often so no big deal. My only complaint is the lack of availability of documentation online. I spend days researching and comparing electronic products before I make a purchase and it would have been nice to be able to research this thing a bit more before I bought it. Despite that, no regrets on the purchase.

I just recently bought this machine at my local Office Depot store, and it's a wonderful, cheap powerhouse. I had a couple reasons for choosing this machine, and there are them:
(1). Its processor is Intel branded. Because of bad experiences with AMD, I only buy Intel.
(2). It has expansion slots, AKA it is a big tower, not those tiny, unexpandible towers. This is good for when I want to upgrade the weakest point of this machine: The graphics card.
(3). Lightscribe disc labeling technology.
(4). Built-in card reader
(5). Price! At 500, it's a steal, [...]
(6). RAM! 6GB is godly... I couldn't ask for more.
(7). Hard drive space... 640GB is wonderful as well for a machine of this price tag.
There are a couple let-downs, here are them:
(1). Graphics card. It is a built in decroded POS, and has problems playing Halo 1. I plan on upgrading this though, which is why I bought the larger version of this machine.
(2). Preinstalled programs... HP has this as its major let down. However, you can SLOWLY remove everything, and I just installed the Windows 7 RC which erased everything, as well as make the machine faster!
Overall, this is a great machine for the price. No slow downs at all, pretty quiet (I have a netbook with an SSD so I'm pampered with quiet computers), and it just works. I recommend it to anyone!
More info; 9/27/09:
Machine is still running incredibly well! I have added the EVGA *LOW POWER* 9600GT graphics card (which barely fits ;) ). It can now play just about everything... And, the low power makes the PSU not as stressed (it's pretty weak as a PSU) but it's all still working great. I've also added an eSATA external HDD part, and everything's perfect. I'll update later with any problems!

Sony ICF-M88B S2 Sports Bicycle Radio with Cycle Computer and Digital AM/FM Tuning Review

Sony ICF-M88B S2 Sports Bicycle Radio with Cycle Computer and Digital AM/FM Tuning
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This radio is almost exactly what I was looking for. Its water resistant design is sleek and reassuring. The speaker is loud enough for normal riding conditions. The backlit LCD and digital tuning are very nice. The bike mount is well designed - it is very simple to quickly detach the radio to take it with you. The FM antenna forms a hard rigid handle on the bottom (not shown in picture) which is nice for carrying.
That said, I have a few complaints. First, the FM reception is pretty poor compared to my car radio (in the same locations). I haven't tried working with the AM band much, so I can't say if it is any better. I would be willing to endure a larger model or more batteries to get better reception.
Second, there's no line-in jack for attaching an mp3 player. This might have been a conscious decision to preserve the water resistant design, but I would have liked to see it just the same. Of course, if you get a radio transmitter for your mp3 player, then you're golden.
Third, $50 is expensive for a portable radio. I would have been willing to forgo the bike computer functions for a less expensive bike mount radio.
Fourth, the wire going to the wheel sensor is kind of short and there's no way to extend it short of splicing the wire.

This will take care of any audio delay problems you have. I have an older receiver that cost me 900.00. I did not want to buy a new one just because of audio delay problems. The newer receivers have audio delay built in. This is the cheapest Digital audio delay you can buy. Coaxil or optical its your choice and you can hook up more than one componet. Very easy to use.

Raid 5805Z Sas/sata 8INT Single No Cables Review

Raid 5805Z Sas/sata 8INT Single No Cables
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)

I seldom if ever write reviews on products; but, I do consider others reviews to help formulate my buying decisions, so I decided to write a review on this particular component, to give back something to the community that might be helpful for them.
For anyone that has been around the industry for awhile, you know the name Adaptec; they OEM a lot of top tier RAID products for other manufacturers, such as IBM, DELL, HP. In my opinion, they make one of the best RAID cards around.
This is my first high-end SAS/SATA card; but I have used several of their other RAID/SCSI products in the past, as well as others from LSI.
I will break the review down into PROS and CONS and a final summary.
PROS:
-Really excellent product packaging
-ZMM (read that as no need for a battery backup module)
-Excellent support for Linux, in my case, Ubuntu.
-Extremely fast; considering I am using a RAID 6 configuration; no complaints there at all.
-Very prompt, friendly and knowledgeable support staff when you have questions.
-Better support for Ubunutu and other .deb flavored packaging is coming from Adaptec.CONS:
- I have become spoiled with web-based management of devices; so I was a little surprised when I learned that ASM (Adaptec Storage Manager) was the only option available (if you don't use CLI, exclusively). Really, I don't fault Adaptec too much for this; in doing research, it appears they did have a web-based version, but went away from it. I jumped to the inaccurate conclusion that this card had that feature, when doing the initial reviews. Most competitor cards had the feature, so I figured, Adaptec, being a top-tier RAID manufacturer would as well. I am sure they had good reasons for abandoning the web-based approach. In any event the ASM works well.
- To get the necessary "latest" supported packages, I had to do a little compiling on my own. The good news here though is, according to Support, better more current native packages for Ubuntu is forthcoming.
- Runs really warm; in my case the core is reporting 65-70 'C; but according to the ASM status, this is normal. I have very good case ventilation, but I may add an additional slot cooler to help bring that down. I have not noticed any problems with the card, or any temperature warning alarms. But, as others have mentioned, because this is a very fast card, with it comes the requisite heat :)
Once you get all of the necessary BIOS, drivers and ASM updated to current standards, the 5805z really has the ability to do some amazing things with power utilization; unfortunately, you need to make very certain the enclosure you use supports these features as well. I bought a really good enclosure, but unfortunately it does not support the spin down / power-off features of the card and hard drives purchased.
In summary, this is a serious card. It is well engineered and fast. Though I have not used all of the potential this card offers, the features I have used, have worked beyond my expectations. Adaptec Support has always been top notch, I am glad to see this has not changed. You can buy a cheaper card, but in the end, you get what you pay for. If you are serious about your data, this card is an excellent choice.

Dell Studio 15-15.4 inch Notebook, Laptop PC Review

Dell Studio 15-15.4 inch Notebook, Laptop PC
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is the Dell Studio 15 inch laptop (Green Colored Case). I think this a great lap top and it gets the job done. I kept reading all the negative reviews and i have no idea why there's so much bad press. I have never once called customer service and i ordered my laptop at Dell directly through their website. I have no reason to contact customer service and i never experienced any problems at all with any of my Dell products. I get so baffled when i read all these negative reviews. My Dell products which i have had for years including a Dell desktop and a recently purchased new netbooks have never been a problem. The desk top i have is more than 6 years old and I never have any problems. It runs great. It can definitely benefit from an upgrade in some areas.
The Studio line is Dell's midrange laptops. The Inspiron being there low end range for consumers that just need a standard laptop. The Dell Studio laptop is completely plastic and it's a bit on the heavy side in my opinion. Maybe because i am so use to my light weight Dell 10 min netbook that i have been spoiled. This is a good lap top. However, i think the flaw in Dell is that their products can get very pricey very quickly. Especially when you are adding in high end features like 6GB RAM rather than 3GB RAM or 2.99GHZ instead of 2.33GHZ etc. You can get the same thing at HP for probably around a hundred dollars less and their quality feels a bit more refined, polished, and sturdy. That being said if you check Dell's website they do have deals going on all the time especially on holidays. But for some reason the price never seems as low as it should be. If you check periodically you will find yourself a deal. I go to that website religiously and build the exact same laptop that I have and it always comes up to more money. I got mine on a special promo.
I really regret getting the green covered case. I didn't realize how bright it would be and once i opened it out of the box - I really wish i purchased the Dark Blue or Dark Purple colored case. It's really way too bright. I like the personalization options of the different colors, but i really do regret getting this bright Caribbean green color. My laptop also includes the backlit keyboard which is great for typing in the dark. It also has touch sensitive controls towards the top of the keyboard near the speakers and i think that's a great plus. The DVD is also an optical drive, so there is no door that slides out for you to pop in your DVD. It's like a Playstation 3 slot. You slide the DVDs in & out.
Pros:
15 inch screen
Optical DVD slot
4GB RAM
750 GB Memory
2.66GHZ
Backlit keyboard
4 UBS slots
HDMI outport
Sleak shiek design
Different colored cases
Wi-Fi
Webcam
Cons:
Windows Vista (Super Whack)
A bit pricey in my opinion (That's Dell for you)
A bit on the heavy side

HP Mini 210-2177NR Netbook - Silver Review

HP Mini 210-2177NR Netbook - Silver
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This has got to be one of the best netbooks ever, for the price. I got it from J&R (also one of the best companies to buy from) and have been enjoying it since. I had a Toshiba Mini NB305 (which is the netbook a lot of reviews compare with to the HP Mini 210) and thought it was "ok." I returned it and bought this one for multiple reasons.
1) The keyboard is easier to type on. It is island-style, nearly full-sized, and all keys are easy to access and the keys themselves are really quite/soft. Very smooth and easy to type on. The Toshiba Mini had a more firm feel and the tab key was too small so I ended up typing "Q" whenever I needed to use tab. The HP Mini's keyboard is nearly perfect.
2) The trackpad is really responsive and does not have separate right/left click buttons, it is just merged into the trackpad. It looks sleek but can get annoying when I have to move the mouse and have my finger to left-click at the same time.
3) Amazing speed. It's a duo-core processor running 1.5 gHz. Simply put, it's way faster than any single core N455 processor. This is an N550 duo-core, it will run very smoothly and will hardly (if ever) experience any lag. The Toshiba Mini lagged quite often and froze frequently as well when I attempted to multitask. This HP Mini does not.
4) Looks awesome. It's thin and it's light.
5) Battery life is pretty great. On full charge I am looking at about 6 hours. It is a 6-cell lithium which SHOULD run 8 hours on full charge but I'm guessing the duo-core is sucking up more than what a single core will so that increased battery drain I expected. The Toshiba Mini went on 8 full hours just fine. This HP Mini will get around 5.5 hours before shutting down.
Overall, great product for the price. I wouldn't recommend any other netbook. It comes with Windows 7 Starter and runs quick with that, but I upgraded to Home Premium. It runs very well on that as well if you're looking into it. Starter is limited and not that great, so the upgrade is worth it.

Dell 2300MP Projector with 2300 Lumens, XGA Resolution Review

Dell 2300MP Projector with 2300 Lumens, XGA Resolution
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
After having access to various projectors through employers for several years, I decided to purchase the 2300MP for both home entertainment and business use. In my current setup, I have the projector connected to a TimeWarner DVR (SA 8300HD). Audio is run from the DVR to a stereo computer speaker and subwoofer system (see review Dell Champagne speakers). It is a quite impressive arrangement. At first glance, many viewers' draws drop when they first see the screen, which is merely projected on a beige painted wall.
With a throw of approximately 11 feet, it creates a screen 7'2" across. The formula for the maximum screen size is: diagonal = 0.618*dist + 0.0192. However, this is somewhat misleading as the distance changes with the incident angle (think Pythagorean Theorem). Yet, if any single characteristic of projectors can be considered a handicap, it would be the limitations imposed by the lens distance to the screen.
Distance also affects brightness as there is less light intensity per square area. However, brightness is not a problem with this projector. One of key selling parameters of DLP projectors is the number of lumens, which describes the total visible light output. Low-end portable projectors are generally under 1000 lumens. At 2300 lumens, this projector is bright enough to hold presentations in a daylight-filled room. In fact, the projector is so bright that I have to navigate through the sluggish management menus to reduce brightness when there are scenes with snow-filled landscapes.
While the projector comes with a remote to operate the management controls, the whole system of operating the projector is a big cumbersome. This problem is compounded when the projector is mounted on the ceiling. In certain instances, it is difficult to determine if the projector is on. The small green status LED's are difficult to see from a distance. As a testament the quietness of the fan, it is barely audible and completely unnoticeable when there is any background noise. Unfortunately, in about one out of 25 times, the projector just doesn't start properly. This sometimes necessitates a hard kill by unplugging the unit. Some of these difficulties may present a difficulty for the non-technical user.
Having a separate tuner (owned and maintained by Time Warner) and projection device is a very, very clean setup. This separation allows for added flexibility as evolving video input options that are separate and distinct from the projection device. Despite the distance limitations, the setup is a great space saver. Moreover, the portability is incredible as it only weighs 4.9 pounds. In my case, the [pre-existing] wall is the viewing surface so there additional hardware such as screen.
Before I purchased this projector, purveyors of competing products warned me about the rainbow effect which appears on certain images when displayed via a DLP projector. The rainbow effect is a strange artifact that only some viewers can see. Basically, prismatic colors form around certain objects with parallel lines such as a pinstripe shirt. In the first couple of weeks I occasionally saw the effect. However, I have not seen it in the past several months. In general, the picture is fantastic. It appears that most anomalies exist in the video source because DVD's appear crisper than recorded DVR movies, which in turn appear better than live broadcast television. With a great picture, portability and tremendous flexibility, the Dell 2300mp represents the future of entertainment.
Pros
Giant, high resolution pictures for entertainment or business
Portability
Flexibility
Great performance for the price
Multitude of inputs (svideo, PrPbY, RCA, VGA)Cons
Long Startup Time/ Occasion Failed startup
Sluggish management controls
Required skill to setup
Some limitations on setup (screen size vs. distance)
Electrical consumptions and heat generation
No HDMI

Intel Processor BX80601960 Review

Intel Processor BX80601960
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have had my previous P4 for quite a while. I had overclocked it and took it for all it was worth and have been waiting for the right time to buy a new PC. Well, after many years of good use, the P4 forced my hands last week when the southbridge fan gave way and the board stopped functioning. After having to work through a bunch of glitches with it for the last six months, I knew it was time for me to build a new system.
When I get ready to build a new system, I spend tons of hours researching everything. I specifically focus on quality. I know that I am more satisfied with the Intel line than the AMD line (I built both). I spent a lot of time looking at the 800 series, 900 series, and 900 extreme series i7 processors to make sure I know the value of each chip. It will always be a question of quality and speed versus dollars and everyones value point is different.
I had a choice here. I could have gotten an i7 920 (or even the i7 860 with an even cheaper motherboard), some good but cheap memory, add a nice 1.5TB hard drive and have a definite upgrade from what I have now and cost me half as much for my system. I would have been happy with it and love the increase in performance. But one thing I have learned is that if I am willing to spend a little extra, I will be satisfied a lot longer. The price I paid here on Amazon is the same as for the 950, although almost twice as much than the 920. With free shipping, and no sales tax, I really get a better value for this chip here than anywhere else. The speed tests show that the performance of the 960, especially when paired with good memory and an extremely fast hard drive, far outperforms the 920 so that the money difference can be justified. I know a lot of enthusiast are set on buying the 920 and then just overclocking it, but the 960 can be overclocked easily to 4.1 Ghz and can get to speeds the 920 only dreams of having (I am not complaining about the 920, but I just don't care for the overclocking argument). Paired with a solid state drive and PC3-1600 low latency Dominator triple-channel memory chips (and a P6X58D Premium motherboard with SATA III and USB 3.0) and I have a system that will last me quite a while before I need an upgrade. Could I have waited until the price of those components come down? Yes, but there will always be something better. I spend a lot of time on my computer (for work and play) and I want something that will satisfy me for many years before my next upgrade.
As far as performance, OH MY GAWD! I can't really compare it to the 920 since I don't have one. I can't even separate out the effect of the solid state drive, dominator memory, P6X48D motherboard, or the i7-960, but I swear the computer just reads my mind and performs the tasks. Never had I seen instant loading like this system does. I am absolutely blown away. I am sure Windows is creating a new operating system to slow things down, but until that happens, I am a happy camper.

The Intel Core i7-960 processor combines the power of four 3.20 GHz computing cores into a single processor, guaranteeing enough processing power for the most demanding applications. With 8 MB of smart cache, the Core i7-960 processor ensures that you get maximum responsiveness from your system, even when several intensive programs run simultaneously. Compatible with motherboards based on the Intel X58 Express chipset, the Core i7-960 processor takes your computing and gaming experience to the next level.
With four cores in one processor, users will experience better multitasking and multithreaded performance. Powerful New Microarchitecture Eliminates SlowdownThe i7 family is Intel's flagship processor, and for good reason. With the i7 family, Intel engineers invented a revolutionary new style of microarchitecture. They replaced the front side bus--a longtime staple of processor design--with a new technology called QuickPath Interconnect (QPI). Using QPI, the Intel Core i7-960 processor achieves unprecedented levels of bandwidth, and can use its four computing cores to their maximum potential.

To put it simply, users will enjoy faster and more streamlined processing than ever before. Your computer will handle multiple projects and applications without the slowdown you'd experience with a lesser processor.

Extremely intensive programs like high-definition media editors will run more smoothly and responsively. And you'll be able to experience next-generation games without frame-rate hiccups and slowdowns.

New Technologies Boost PerformanceThe Intel Core i7-960 processor also makes use of several other cutting-edge technologies:

Turbo Boost Technology allows the processor to run up to 133 MHz faster when it's operating below power/thermal limits.
Hyper-threading Technology enables more efficient use of processor resources, making the most of highly threaded software like media players and next-generation games.
Smart Cache Memory increases available RAM resources, leading to less lag while multi-tasking.
Media Editing and Sharing Easier than EverWhether editing high-definition videos, touching up family photos, or splicing up music, the Intel Core i7-960 processor provides the processing power needed. The processor's four cores are optimized to keep up with the most advanced digital editing software. It also accelerates DVD encoding and compression, allowing you to easily share your HD home videos with everyone.
Unparalleled Gaming PerformanceWith the advent of next-generation games, PC gaming is more immersive than ever. The latest games take advantage of multi-threaded programming, allowing for more realistic graphics, physics, and artificial intelligence (AI). But you need more than just a good graphics card with high GPU output to fully experience all these effects. Underlying the visual realism and advanced AI scripts are thousands of high-speed calculations that your CPU must process.

Fortunately, the Intel Core i7-960 processor is specifically designed to handle these calculations. Using multi-thread architecture, it has the ability to process thousands of graphical characteristics at once, resulting in a smooth and lag-free experience. Intel worked closely with CryTek -- the developers of the advanced game engine behind such games as Crysis and Far Cry -- to guarantee that gamers have an immersive and lifelike experience.

The Intel Core i7-960 processor is backed by a three-year limited warranty.

ViewSonic VOT132_BVDB00 Mini Desktop PC - Black Review

ViewSonic VOT132_BVDB00 Mini Desktop PC - Black
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought the VOT132 without a Windows operating system installed in order to use it as legacy Windows XP computer. (I had a valid XP license and installation disk from an older computer I had retired.) Unlike ViewSonic's subsequent PC mini, the VOT125, the VOT132 has full driver support for Windows XP. I had to download the XP drivers from the ViewSonic website, but everything that I needed was there. Unlike some folks, I have had basically no noise problems with this computer.
My biggest problem with this computer is that it is underpowered. I mean this in two ways: first the processor (but that I can live with) and second the actual amount of power that seems to be available for the USB ports. (A computer this small has no COM ports or PS2 ports so everything depends on the USB ports.) About three months after I bought it, I started having the computer freeze during boot up. While this may possibly be a driver problem (although I am not sure how), it feels like the machine fails to boot properly because it doesn't have enough power. The workaround for the situation that I have at present is to unplug the USB cable that goes from my VOT132 to my KVM switch BEFORE I boot up in order to keep the computer from hanging just as the XP flash screen is displayed. Once the computer is booted up I can reconnect the cable and use the mouse and keyboard via the KVM with no problem.
While I am still confused about the source of my problems, it appears likely that using most of the six USB ports (as I am) is an invitation to start up problems.
(After close to two decades of using PCs running Windows, over the last two years I have moved to Mac OS X and Linux machines for almost all of my application and server functions. It is, however, unavoidable that some archived material-- such as old email-- can only be read on legacy Windows applications and a few programs-- like my current income tax and genealogy software-- only run under Windows. So this machine will both permanently archive materials that can't leave Windows and will provide a bridge for the next three or four years for running software I am not ready to replace with Mac compatible programs.)

With the current offering of x58 MB this one stands out for several reasons. It does not sport any of the bling-bling you see on "eXtreme gam3r" products like crazy heat pipes (moving "teh heatz" whole 3" away!) and overclocking widgets. Instead it offers sensible thermal design - all slots are aligned with the air direction in the case from front to back, this includes DIMMs and power connectors, and SATA are angled on the edge of the board so the cables don't obstruct air-flow too. Unlike heat pipes this does provide better cooling. In place of overclocking options it has comprehensive set of powersaving and monitoring tools also reducing heat and plenty of 4-pin fan connectors with controlled speed so it can be made whisper-quiet, especially when idle. It supports ECC and 6 DIMMs which is a pretty rare combo. Overall it's the best MB for work I could find - stable and quiet. Note that the picture is of another MB - C7X58 does not have two PCI-X slots shown. There are only solder points for them so keep this in mind if you have many add-on boards, this has 2 PCI-E x16, 1 PCI-E x8 and 1 PCI.
