I needed a basic laptop for web surfing, email, writing, and some light computer programming. I got this one at Best Buy for about $[...]. For the price I found it to be a good buy. It came with the 64 bit version of Windows 7 and had two gigabytes of memory, a single core AMD 64 bit processor and a two hundred and fifty gigabyte hard drive. Uses shared memory for graphics.
After using it for about a week I became frustrated with the length of time it took to boot up and another while for your program to load. Once your program was loaded, it would run ok but I did not run more than three programs at once. It also seemed relatively easy to stress the processor. The system monitor would indicate processor usage was at near one hundred percent by merely installing a program. The battery life was respectable and the built in wireless worked very well. I found the keyboard and touch pad to be a bit odd but I quickly got used to how they worked.
One peeve I had was that the initial memory came in two one gigabyte modules. It would have made more sense and been cheaper in shipping the laptop with a two gigabyte module. I however do not pretend to understand the business decisions of these computer manufacturers.
Bottom line.
Good value for the price but recommend increasing the memory to at least three gigabytes to work well. Good for light use around the home or at the office. I have not tried but I don't recommend games on this unit. I would give it 3.5 stars if I could but I cannot seem to give half star increments so three stars it is.

Average Reviews:

OMG. A laptop like this, with this much horsepower would have been $1200 or $1400 a year or so ago. Let's look at the important specs:
CPU: AMD Turion(tm) II Neo K625 Dual-Core Processor 1.5GHz in Ubuntu.
L1 cache: 256k
L2 cache: 2M
Memory dual 2Gig DDR3 1033
1366x768 LED backlit display
Integrated Mobile Radeon HD 4225 video
320G Hitachi hard drive
First thing I did when I got it was shrink the windows partition and install Ubuntu 10.04 64 bit. I don't use windows except for games. I have a game box, so I might or might not ever use this for games. Probably not much.
With Ubuntu, everything just works. Seriously, it's a way easy install.
Step 1: Live boot, use gparted to shrink windows partition
Step 2: Install linux from same live boot, "along side current operating systems"
Step 3: Enjoy Ubuntu.
Video, audio, screen bright/dim, audio level up / down, wireless networking, etc. It all just works, and works so well.
This machine screams for something running on a "netbook" CPU. This CPU is an easy match for many mid tier notebooks out there. This machine spanks any of my friend's Atom based netbooks, and it spanks them hard. It also beats my old AMD dual core 1.8GHz laptop it's replacing. The Turion here running at 1.5GHz is noticeably faster than the Atom, and you've got two of them, not one. A part of that is the faster DDR3 1066MHz memory, which is 60% faster than the DDR2 667MHz memory in the Atom based machines. But also the CPU is just faster. And the integrated video...
The video is quick and snappy, and it can play 720p video with ease. The CPU hovers at 65% to 75% while doing so. My old ATI Radeon 1400 based laptop could never do that without tearing the video or dropping frames. And keep in mind, this good performance is in Ubuntu Linux, and Linux isn't known for being snappy on a lot of chipsets. Here it works great.
It doesn't get hot to the touch. Heck it needs to be running at 100% just to feel a little warm.
The battery runs a good 4.5 to 5 hours, even when you're really using it the whole time. Just drop the screen brightness a couple notches to get > 4 hours battery life. If you leave it at max, expect 2.5 to 3 hours tops.
Basically, this is a small, lightweight mini-laptop with full sized laptop performance and display for about the same price. If I hadn't been looking at notebooks for a friend who wanted a 10" unit, I wouldn't have seen this, and that would have been sad, because this thing is the perfect size for me and has the performance I need. I can toss it into my backpack and go.

I've only had this laptop for a month or so but I've been happy with it so far. I bought it to replace an HP dv6000 which spontaneously died on me after only 3 yrs. I don't recommend HP laptops. I've read several good reports in newspapers and online about the Satelite series. If this one lasts longer than the last one, I'll be buying Toshibas from now on.

I just purchased this laptop, and let me be the first to tell you that it is worth your money. It is blazing fast, and has many features not found at this price point. You are essentially getting a great laptop for your money. Try to find a laptop with blu ray at this price, that is also an i5. Most likely, you won't. I've had this laptop for a few weeks now. Great product. Would definately recommend.

This is a great system to attach to the PC input of your HDTV. I installed it on my network to allow viewing digital pictures & videos stored on my Network Attached Storage (NAS) on the large screen. Also allows me to use skype from the TV and have the family join in video chats with friends & family around the world. It has sufficient power for such chores and is completely silent and small enough to sit inside the cabinet housing the cable box & Blueray player. I leave the system running all the time so it's always ready to show pictures and such. While I have a network connection at the TV, the WiFi capability is a nice benefit. I use a wireless keyboard/trackball so I can control the system from the sofa. Good reliable product.

Acer AS7745-7949 17.3-Inch Laptop (Black) Review

Acer AS7745-7949 17.3-Inch Laptop (Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
What a treat, when I first received this I was a bit skeptical in how well the laptop would run. However, I was in for a surprise when I set everything up and gave it a try. That means deleting useless programs that come with the computer and putting in ones from the previous desktop. (the desktop would never have a chance with this thing)
The monitor is just enormous, which if you like big laptops you'll love this. Mind you though that moving this thing is sluggish, but manageable enough to forgive. Because hey now, you're getting a huge laptop! The screen is very clear
The processor is fast, I was able to run any program I used without stuttering or failing compared to previous computers.
The RAM is high, don't be expecting to wait anytime soon with this thing. 4GBs is a lot of RAM.
I'm not familiar with how 64-bit operating systems work, so I can't comment on that.
The hard drive space is 500GB, way more than I ever had combined. I can't say I won't use a lot though, hehehe.
Although, even with all these perks I have one part I'm not as content with.
The graphics. What you're getting here isn't some specific graphic card, but some thing called Intel HD Graphics. I mean, they're okay and all, but they weren't as satisfactory as I was expecting. Some games I ran I could set to some pretty high settings, but the rest I had to live with lower. Which is me probably being picky because it was a Christmas present, hehe.
The second problem I had is the top part of the laptop (behind the monitor) smudges really easy from the oil in your fingers. I hate smudges, but again, it's a very minor complaint.
Anyway, all in all this is a very nice laptop for the price. A little on the pricey side for me, but I'll live.
Been using this laptop for 13 days now, not a problem with anything but any foolish mistakes I do.

HP G42-230US 14-Inch Laptop Review

HP G42-230US 14-Inch Laptop
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
!!UPDATED!!
I have had my g42-230us for three months and found it to be a decent moderately powerful computer. The 7200RPM hard drive and 1Mb per core cache give it the extra "umph" it needs to compete with the Intel offers.
This computer, like most consumer targeted systems, came loaded with bloatware (software that isn't required and slows down performance).
I am a computer tech so the first thing I recommend for this and all consumer targeted computers is to make the restore DVD's as soon as you turn on the computer and before you connect to a network or the internet. Second thing I recommend to do is to get a genuine copy of Windows 7, then use it to reformat (and delete all extra hard drive partitions) and reinstall operating system. Doing this is almost literally the difference between night and day. You will realize more hard drive space, faster boot and shutdown, no software "nags" (other than Windows 7 "nags") or bloatware pop ups to activate and upgrade trial software and no performance robbing unnecessary running services and registry entries.
I tell my customers to consider this a required cost to any big brand consumer level computer purchased (comsumer level computers are typicaly computers sold that are not installed with Windows 7 Professional). You can get windows here on Amazon:Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium Microsoft Windows 7 Professional . Keep in mind bloatware keeps the cost of the computer down (the computer's maker is often paid to install this trial software in hopes it will lead to the sale of the full product.
After installing Genuine Windows 7 64bit I have a decent professional grade laptop for a few hundred less than what HP sells them for otherwise.
Clarification from what other reviews have stated: All three USB ports are v2.0 and are powered to 500mA. I have tested them and confirmed this to be true even under battery power.
Note:
No modem is included and no PC Card socket is present.
The speakers and Altec Lansing, upward facing above the Function keys near the display hinge.
Wired LAN is not Gigabit Ethernet (this is a real downgrade from my almost four year old Acer Aspire).
Annoyances:
The power button is slightly recessed and very small. I have very small fingers but still have to press the button multiple times to get it depressed enough to activate (but now I just use my finger nail and it works fine).
The hard drive activity light looks to be a 1mm LED mounted behind a hole in the left side of the unit next to the media card reader. This is excellent for the person sitting to my left when they want to know if my hard drive is active but totally useless to me.
Also the power / charging light looks to be a 1mm LED mounted behind a hole on the right side near the DC input. This too is excellent for the person on my right that wants to know if my laptop is charging or on but totally useless to me.
There is however a power light in the power button above the Function keys and speakers near the hindge but it to looks to be a 1mm LED pointed straight up and can't be seen when the lid is closed so you cannot see if your computer is on/sleeping/or off unless you open the lid or look at the led on the right side of the unit.
Almost a deal killer is the fact that the touchpad area is not recessed or raised, nor does it have a different pattern or texture than the palm rests. Without looking, using the touchpad buttons as an guide, a person cannot feel where the touchpad area starts and ends on the left and right side. I used 3M blue painters tape 3M 2090 Scotch-Blue Painter's Tape for Multi-Surfaces 1-Inch x 60-Yard, 4-Rollto create outlines of the touchpad area to use the unit in the dark and without watching my fingers.
Battery:
The stock battery is a MU06 and the battery life is very good but I got the MU09 extended life batter anyway. The extended life battery does stick out some at the bottom causing a funny lop-sided look. Also an optional higher watt charger can be found but I don't know it would be any better than the one included. HP 90W Smart Ac Adapter US
I like Acer / Gateway laptops because I had always found them easy to work on but I have already taken this one apart pretty well and it isn't as bad as the HP computers of previous years.
I have a report for Speccy on my unit:

I have been informed that there is a clean install restore option but this is not an option on my unit. The factory restore "clean" option still installs many services and registry items including HP "nags" and programs that connect to HP's web site to keep you informed up updates and messages (offers). The clean install I recomend will give a user the most out of the computer.
!!!!!!CAVEAT!!!!!!!: Some users do not mind or miss the lost performance and hard drive space and can very well live with the hp "clean" install or even the factory install.
I only mention the clean install in my review because I and most of my cutomers are "power" users and prefere a true Windows clean install from a genuine Windows disc. Plus a person can buy almost the same computer without the bloatware software installed for twice the price. I am just pointing out an alternative to spending twice the money and getting the almost the same computer as a pro model.

Amazon merged the two models into one page and fixed most of their info, but they have the battery life listed as nine hours in one place and six hours in another; the six hour figure is correct (thanks, Philip!).
Also, the cheaper model (T115D-S1120) has a single core 1.6 GHz processor, not a dual core 1.5 GHz processor. This is currently still incorrect on one part of the page.

"first generation" Apple iPad Tablet (32GB, Wi-Fi) Review

first generation Apple iPad Tablet (32GB, Wi-Fi)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've now spent the better part of a day playing with the new iPad, and while it excels in many things there are still some things anyone considering buying one should probably keep in mind.
First the good sides:
This thing is very fast, opening and closing applications is quick, the screen is incredibly responsive, there is no lag while typing, and the built in Safari browser does a great job of quickly loading even graphic intense pages.
The not so good sides:
As has been thoroughly pointed out, there is not presently much in the way of multitasking within the iPhone OS, but with most expectations pointing towards a summer release of OS 4.0 this might be remedied by mid summer, and almost certainly by a generation 2 release. That said, it should be kept in mind that on such a little screen being able to view multiple applications at once will likely never be something you'll use, and the speed by which you can open and close applications makes this less a headache than you might think. It isn't as fast as moving between open apps, but it isn't a deal breaker by any means. The lack of a camera in this generation is a little surprising, while I've purchased my iPad already, I honestly believe that with the number of competitors expected over the course of 2010 we're probably going to see a generation 2 by Christmas with a camera. It's still an amazing device, but the ability to video chat with it would definitely put it over the top, that's a feature worth waiting for. The lack of Flash support isn't as irritating as I expected it to be, but still something to consider. Many major sites have evolved to html5, or are in the process of doing so. This allows for full viewing by the Safari browser, and where it exists, it works great. The remaining sites still using Flash show up with annoying little boxes looking for a plugin that is likely never going to exist. If you spend a lot of time on flash heavy sites it really probably is worth considering holding out to see how the Slate/Android Tablets look in a few months, but if you're mostly just e-mailing and checking facebook (no Farmville) the lack of Flash support probably won't bother you too much.
As a laptop replacement:
The inclusion of the iWorks utilities gives this device a little bit of a laptop personality. Don't let that persuade you into believing that you don't need a computer though. You might be able to get away with ditching a laptop if all you really do is e-mail or very light word processing, but if you do anything more than that you'll like the freedom and ease a full computer offers for more complex tasks. That said, this device is a tremendous leap towards a future tablet style device that may very well be a replacement for your computer, but for now it is more of a casual use device than something you can really expect to do substantial work with. I have put together a presentation in keynote, which was easy enough to do, but pages isn't as intuitive as I'd have liked, and taking lengthy notes or writing long letters/e-mails/reports will probably make it worth considering buying either the keyboard dock or the wireless bluetooth keyboard.
Battery life seems to live up to the claims, I managed to get about 7 hours before getting the 20% remaining battery life indication, which puts it about right for 10 hours or so of total use. One very important thing to realize about charging the device is that presently (at launch) there is some issues with charging via USB from many computers. The iPad is different than other iPod products, it requires a bit more power to charge up, and unfortunately most USB ports aren't set up to support that higher power draw. This is something that may be fixed in a firmware update to allow for a slower charge, or it may simply be that you'll need to either rely on a new Mac (seems like they can handle the power issue) or rely on the wall charger. Just don't be surprised if you plug it into your computer and it doesn't show that it is charging.
All in all, the iPad is an impressive device that might make for a reasonable replacement of a netbook for casual users. For people who need something to really do a lot of work on, you may find that for the price that a netbook or laptop still offers the better value for your needs. Future generations of this device will probably transition into fitting that market better than this first generation. However, if you're an avid reader, casual gamer, music fan, who doesn't do much more on the web than check a few sites, and e-mail. This thing is definitely worth considering! If you're on the fence, nothing about this product is so incredible as to justify running out and buying one right now, but it is worthy of your consideration if you're thinking you might like a tablet style device. I definitely would encourage you to go play with one at best buy or an apple store to get a feel for it. With a number of competitors due out over the next few months we're likely to see some price movement, or a second generation release, so it may be worth it to wait it out a little while.
One final note, the screen is absolutely gorgeous while it is turned on. It is crisp, bright, and very easy to see from any angle. But when you turn it off, every finger print and swipe is suddenly very visible (while it is on the light is bright enough you don't see them fingerprints). If you are a neat freak, or just hate finger prints on your devices you'll have to invest in some microfiber cloths or get used to using your shirt sleeve!
In conclusion, it's a lot of fun, and I'm not the least bit sorry to have bought one. It does many things, and over the next months will do many more. If you think you want one, go play with one, and if you don't want to wait for a next generation this one is definitely awesome. If you have specific needs that aren't really addressed in this generation or by apple, don't let the hype or peer pressure bully you into this one, there are a number of devices coming with great potential, one of those might be a better fit.

Apple iPad Wi-Fi is a magical and revolutionary product at an unbelievable price and the best way to experience the web, email, photos, and video. All of the built-in apps on iPad are designed from the ground up to take advantage of the large multi-touch screen and advanced capabilities of iPad. And they work in any orientation. So you can do things with these apps that you can't do on any other device. The high-resolution, 9.7-inch LED-backlit IPS display on iPad is remarkably crisp and vivid. Which makes it perfect for web browsing, watching movies, or viewing photos. With iPad, there is no up or down. It's designed to show off your content in portrait or landscape orientation with every turn. And because it uses a display technology called IPS (in-plane switching), it has a wide viewing angle. So you can hold it almost any way you want and still get a brilliant picture, with excellent color and contrast. The multi-touch screen on iPad is based on the same revolutionary technology on iPhone. But the technology has been completely reengineered for the larger iPad surface, making it extremely precise and responsive. So whether you're zooming in on a map, flicking through your photos, or deleting an email, iPad responds with incredible accuracy. And it does just what you want it to.One of the first things you'll notice about iPad is how thin and light it is. The screen is 9.7 inches measured diagonally. So overall, it's slightly smaller than a magazine. You can use it anywhere. And a slight curve to the back makes it easy to pick up and comfortable to hold. With built-in 802.11n, iPad takes advantage of the fastest Wi-Fi networks. It automatically locates available Wi-Fi networks, which you can join with a few taps. iPad also comes with Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR, letting you connect to devices like wireless headphones or the Apple wireless keyboard.

I bought this laptop because my previous Compaq was dropped and broke. My new Asus was reviewed well when I researched it and I agree! The best thing about the laptop is that it is fast and has a bright screen. It even has a number keypad on the side which is wonderful. The only problem I have is that the facial recognition software isn't perfect. This software allows the webcam to log you on instead of entering your password. It does work but you have to take a lot of sample pictures and have really good lighting. Overall a really good laptop.

Sony VAIO VPCEB42FX/WI 15.5" White Laptop Review

2.53GHz is very fast for a laptop computer. The web button is very nice to go direct to the internet without having to open the windows program. The wireless chip for the TV is a bit expensive for us to buy the receiver right now. Of course with a Sony what you get is a brighter, clearer, sharper screen. It is well worth it to pay more and we got a great price at the office supply store. We still have our G router, I may have to upgrade to the N to take advantage of the faster connection. They put junk on it though because of Sonys cronies: Bing, Norton and other bloatware. Their Bing photo is very nice though. You can refuse them and hopefully they will not load and take up resources. I much prefer Microsoft essentials anti virus software. Sony continues to be the leader. Otherwise I would go to Acer because anything made in Taiwan is much better then what they are making in China. Although I would trust Sony to supervise their China factories more then a lot of companys that don't seem to have a clue about what goes on over there in China. Of course Sony Claims a lot of their parts are still make in Japan and then assembled in China. Some of the computers assembled in America have a bunch of quality parts that are not integrated to work together properly and you have nothing but problems with them.

SwissGear Computer Backpack (Blue) Review

SwissGear Computer Backpack (Blue)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
All the other reviews are spot on with how well the bag works and how well they enjoy it. I myself enjoy this bag to this day. I use it as my backpack during college, and i carry roughly 10-20lbs in it daily, and its quite comfy.
Compartments - Holds almost anything and everything. I have every little gadget i need inside such as my calculator, charge cables, advil(used for long days at college and the gym), lots of books and folders.
Durability - I haven't owned this bag for more than a few months, so i cannot say how well this bag will hold up. But knowing Swiss gear, it should hold up for years to come. The
bag seems very well made and durable.
Reliability - If this means how often it doesn't break down, then i haven't had an issue yet, but i only owned for a few months.
Space efficiency - Like said above, it holds everything you could possibly need in a day trip, unless you really need very large items or lots and lots of smaller items. But on average, you should be able to carry what you'll need.Pros-
-Holds everything I need
-Swiss Gear was made to hold up for awhile
-The price is very low!
-Good looking bag
-Comfy
Cons-
-always looks large regardless of what's inside
-some of the pockets seem useless such as the large side ones, but if you can make due to using them all then ignore this con.
-The worst of all in my opinion...The zippers make a lot of noise when your walking around. I had to fold my zippers into the bag so they wouldn't jingle as much. Me being a guy, i don't enjoy jingling everywhere i walk. The noise of metal clanking on every step multiplied by all the zippers on the bag is very, irritating. Good zippers, but the noise is very annoying to me.
I don't write reviews, but i figure this would've been a nice thing to know about before purchasing. I still would've bought this bag because of price+size+name brand.
Overall i would've given this bag 5 stars, if the zippers weren't so loud(maybe a rubber casing around each one so it doesn't sound like metal clanking everywhere, or maybe only 1 zipper per opening instead of 2 each)
I'll review more as time goes by and i see more faults or things i like.

Sony VAIO VPC-EA44FX/BJ 14-Inch Widescreen Entertainment Laptop (Black) Review

Sony VAIO VPC-EA44FX/BJ 14-Inch Widescreen Entertainment Laptop (Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I always thought vaio's were out of my budget, but at amazon it was much cheaper than anywhere else, and even cheaper than an equivalent dell with my stundent discount. I chose this computer because it is pretty light, has a decent keyboard, a lot of memory, and big hard drive, great for the simulations I run. The only things I didn't like is that the screen reflects too much (but I guess all the new computers are like that now), the mouse click is kinda lound, the cd drive seems a bit fragile and squeaks, and it did not come with the windows cd in case I need to reinstall it. I got this computer only a couple of months a go, so I can't tell how durable it is. The battery seems to last 4hr at the most, which I believe is standard. I mostly use it plugged in. You might be able to buy a battery that lasts longer and put in it.

I received a used Latitude D820 recently and have been very pleased with its performance. The battery life is good, the performance has been robust and responsive. The only thing I find missing on this computer is a webcam. The speakers are a little tinny, but with headphones the sound is great. I like the nice large screen too! Enjoying my Latitude D820!
