I've been using these switches since they first came out in 2006, and let me tell you that HP's ProCurve line is coming up in the marketplace for a reason. This switch is a monster! I've used several blades and by far the most impressive is the 4 x 10Gbe blade. That's right, you can fill all twelve bays with 10Gbe ports and have complete management over them. They are extremely, extremely fast and capable even in a core capacity. HP's lifetime warranty extends beyond the original owner, so you can buy these used and still have complete coverage without spending a dime. Timely firmware updates round out these giant-killers. So stop paying the Cisco tax and get into ProCurve!

HP Procurve 2520-8 Poe Switch Review

HP Procurve 2520-8 Poe Switch

I bought this switch to power three Vivotek (one outdoor 8361 and two indoor 8161) security cameras. One 8161 camera is on twenty feet of cable, the 8361 is on 75 feet and the other 8161 is at the end of about 150 feet. The cable is Cat 6, 23 AWG solid conductor with core separator to keep the pairs separated. For a short while, I had the 8361 at the end of 150 feet and it has the IR LEDs and internal heater. It drew somewhere around 7.4 Watts (47.4 Volts at 160mA). Without the LEDs, the 8361 pulls about 3.9 Watts (84mA) while the other two pull about 4.1 Watts (92-94mA), all at 47.4 to 47.5 Volts which makes sense since they're probably on the same Voltage rail inside the switch. In any case, I've never had to reboot the switch for any reason. The PoE power control on each port reliably switches power to a port on and off through the web browser interface control. I use one Gigabit uplink to talk directly to the gigabit my security camera server computer and the second to connect to my LAN, I can see how much power any one camera is pulling. I cannot see how much power each port is pulling on the PoE status screen which shows a list of all the ports and the PoE configuration status. I have to double-click a port to see its PoE electrical status. It updates this screen every few seconds.
Unfortunately, I haven't tested switch specific features such as VLANs tagged and untagged, QoS. I have tested the software for VLANs on the non PoE version of this switch to some extent. I was able to configure VLANs and tag them appropriately on ports that shared several VLANs but was unable to configure the connected Linux PC because its on-board NIC seemed to be unresponsive to configuring tagged VLANs even though it accepted the commands.
I'm very happy with this switch. I've had it on line non-stop since I bought it and it hasn't failed me yet and it's just warm to the touch in a 75 degree environment. The reliance and functionality of a network appliance is my concern so it gets 5 stars.

I needed to segment out my network into separate collision domains because I have a TON of LAN traffic. You'd be amazed how much junk gets on a advanced home network if you were to truly investigate your LAN traffic. This switch assumes you know CCNA level switch technologies and routing. If you want plug and play, go away from this model and just buy a un-managed switch. Me on the other hand, I want full management, network segmentation, Quality of Service, Access Control Lists, the whole 9 yards. This switch does not use the standard Cisco IOS set of commands so the GUI and menu driven CLI took some getting use to. Provides great network performance, secure collision domains, remote management is wonderful, SNMP features are fabulous and at a great price for the package. Integrates nicely with a Cisco 881 WAN router and really took a load off it's CPU and memory utilization after installing the Cisco SG100-10.

Procurve 2910AL-24G-POE Switch Review

Procurve 2910AL-24G-POE Switch
Average Reviews:

This switch was purchased to support a new expansion on the 3rd floor. We wanted Procurve reliability with limited POE for a few devices. This switch supports 30watts per port for 12ports or 15watts per port for all 24 ports. It has 4 dual personality ports so we can connect it to our fiber backbone and it has the HP Procurve unlimited warranty for as long as you own the unit. We have rarely had a problem with any of our Procurve switches, but HP has always supplied a replacement overnight. Unlike some vendors everything including the fans are covered. This is a great managed switch and we are about to purchase another as the new office space has grown more rapidly than was expected and we are almost out of ports.

Switch 8-PORT Gig Poe 2-SFP

I bought this switch as an upgrade from my 4-port 100MB hub... talk about a difference! File transfer speeds are way up and gaming lag way down. Everything works as advertised and I definitely recommend it. My only gripe is that the log-in screen sometimes requires a few refreshes to register my input. Other than that, this is a good little device for anyone wanting to get their feet wet with managed switches.

Netgear Switch 24-PT 10/100MBPS Poe Review

Netgear Switch 24-PT 10/100MBPS Poe
Average Reviews:

With traffic on networks increasing and new devices being regularly added, you need a network switch that will not only cope with your current demmand, but will also be futureproof. The FS728TP does all that. With power over ethernet it can provide power to voice over IP phones on your network, remote webcams, etc therefore removing the need for local power sources for them.
This really is a switch that suits all users - from the basic user this is effectively plug and play - just connect your devices and it works out of the box. With other more advanced features such as QoS, SNMP, Web based configuration & DHCP it offers plenty of configurability for the more advanced user as well.
All in all, this is a great value for money switch with the performance and reliability that Netgear are known for. A highly recommended product!

The unit is solidly built(steel enclosure), and works flawlessly like all my other Netgear switches. It's perfect for applications that need PoE to power Wireless access points, or for my purpose of powering and connecting a bunch of IP security cameras. A nice surprise was the price for this unit as it's much less than other PoE switches I looked into. In addition, having the two Gigabit connections were perfect for connecting it into my Gigabit backbone, and continuing the chain. I've yet to enable and configure CoS or other advanced features, but the UI seems straightforward. I'm not an IP expert, so this switch was a nice option rather than going to a managed switch. My only complaint with the unit is the fan is louder than I expected, noticeable loud in a room with a couple computers also running. All my other switches have been fanless, so I'm spoiled. In the end, I'd purchase another one. In fact I probably will real soon.

I purchased 2 of these units to setup WiFi for a mountain condo building (3 floors by 5 units). Both units are mounted on opposites end of the building on the top (3rd) floor. Setup was relatively easy (maybe not if a first timer). The one time I had a question for Trendnet (prior to purchase) their response was prompt and helpful. Units are attached to a DSL modem/router. Since we can only get 7MB DSL service I have limited the APs to 11b. So can't comment on higher speeds. So far all units are reporting good service.
These units are hard to beat for the price. Not as powerful as the Cisco units but you can buy 2 (or more) for the same price.
Note: Units have been installed about 5 months now at a condo building in the Colorado mountains at about 9000 feet. Units are mounted outdoors. Temperature range in that time has been about 85 to -20 F. So far so good.

There was one setting I had to change to get them to work. It was under multicast. I had to set all of the ethernet ports to static. Other then that it worked perfect. Also this switch comes with 3 years hardware and 5 years of phone support from Cisco. They have people on the phones 24x7 which is awesome. And to top it off, the people you speak with are American!
