HP Procurve 1810G-24 Switch Review

HP Procurve 1810G-24 Switch

This switch has a lot of powerful features that can come in handy. If you don't need any of them, just plug it in and it will work fine as well. If you need trunking, VLAN's and broadcast storm protection, this has it. The web management interface is easy to use and also has logging so you can troubleshoot your network.
My favorite feature of this switch is the lack of a fan and low power consumption. I use these in many homes, so silence is a requirement!

Cisco Catalyst 2960 24-port 10/100MBPS, 2 gig-uplink (copper/SFP) Review

The C2960-24TC-S is the 10/100 + gig-uplink version of the workhorse Cisco2960. I run a number of 2960s (various models) for work, including a recent purchase of this model. They offer a full set of features (QoS, trunking, VLANs, traffic shaping, SNMP, etc), but we primarily use them for straightforward Layer2 switching while gathering simple traffic stats.
Unlike cheaper switches in this space, the uplink/SFP ports are not shared, and can be used as normal ports, making this effectively a 26-port switch. (but you have to use just one of the UTP or the SFP for the uplinks). Cisco SFPs are required (and are expensive). Other brands (including CiscoLinksys) will show up as disabled/error.
This model is lower-priced in part because it runs the Cisco "Lan Lite" IOS (rather than "Lan Base"). For most users, this won't make a difference, but noteworthy since LanLite and LanBase installations are not interchangeable. Cisco lists these differences, that are missing in LanLite:
* gigabit on all ports (the all-gig switches are LanBase)
* RPS support, larger range of SFP models
* Layer 2-4 ACLs, DHCP snooping, 802.1x enhancements
* Some additional QoS capabilities
* Higher network-level availability (eg Flex Links)
* Larger number of VLANs
For most of my installs, I don't miss these features other than the gig-on-all-ports (skipping that is a cost-based decision).
My very recent purchase was manufactured Feb2010 and shipped with IOS 12.2(44)SE6 . IOS releases are frequent, and I noticed there have been 6 minor releases already for this switch since then, but fortunately the updates are available as free downloads (after registration) from the Cisco support site.
After trying various other brands (and having lots of reliability and throughput problems), I've decided you get what you pay for in L2 managed switches, and now I specify only Cisco, and usually a 2960. Highly recommended.

Netgear Switch 24-PT 10/100MBPS Poe Review

With traffic on networks increasing and new devices being regularly added, you need a network switch that will not only cope with your current demmand, but will also be futureproof. The FS728TP does all that. With power over ethernet it can provide power to voice over IP phones on your network, remote webcams, etc therefore removing the need for local power sources for them.
This really is a switch that suits all users - from the basic user this is effectively plug and play - just connect your devices and it works out of the box. With other more advanced features such as QoS, SNMP, Web based configuration & DHCP it offers plenty of configurability for the more advanced user as well.
All in all, this is a great value for money switch with the performance and reliability that Netgear are known for. A highly recommended product!

I purchased one of these over a year ago, and it has turned out well. I plugged it in and it worked (as an upgrade from an unmanaged SMC 10/100 * 16 port switch). I wanted to change some settings; after a few experiments I had it tweaked the way I wanted. After that, it has only gone down or restarted when power was out. Works fine with SMC (10/100), TPLink (10/100/1000), DLink (10/100), and NetGear (10/100) switches attached, as well as with 3Com (10/100), SMC (10/100), Intel (10/100/1000), Marvell (10/100/1000), Broadcom (10/100/1000), and some other ethernet NICs in my collection (mostly 10Mb/s). I'm using UTP Cat5E cables in general.
The management interface lacks the ability to name ports (so I need to keep a file somewhere else with the list of connected devices). Otherwise I'd rate it as very good. It includes features like counters (frame, byte, various errors per port), password protection (but only password!) for the management interface, forced speed/duplex per port, all of which work well for me. It also has features such as aggregation, VLAN, priority, jumbo frames, and other things I don't normally use (simple network with a mix of devices).
My biggest complaint would be that they used cheap fans (unhappily, it seems nearly everybody does). When I first got it, it was fairly quiet (you could hear the air flowing and some usual blade noise), but after several months the bearings started to go in the fans and now the rattling of the fans can be heard amongst all the other noise in my computer room (so it would be somewhere between obvious and obnoxious if I had it in an otherwise quiet room). I keep it clean, so there is no dust buildup on the fans. For what I paid for it when it was new, quality dual-ball-bearing fans would have been expected (even if this would have made it cost a few dollars more, it would have been worth it). None of the fans have failed yet, but as they continue to get louder, I'm looking for replacements.

GS716T-200 - ProSafe® 16-port Gigabit Smart Switch Review

GS716T-200 - ProSafeĀ® 16-port Gigabit Smart Switch

I recently purchased this switch due to the lack of reliable consumer-grade unmanaged 16-port Gigabit switches. It was also listed on the Netgear ReadyNAS NV+ compatibility list, which was the second reason I purchased this model.
This model replaced a Netgear GS116, which itself worked fine until it decided to suddenly stop transmitting packets and required unplugging and replugging the power cord. The GS116 replaced a GS108 which worked flawlessly (and still does) for 3 years. I've been expanding my network since our house's network is more like a small business than a residence.
The buyer of this switch should note that there are several versions of the GS716T floating about, a v1, v2, and 200 model exist - and the v1 and v2 are being phased out for the 200 series according to the Netgear website. This model is the latest 200-series - though I cannot really tell the difference between the v2 and 200 model, and both use the same firmware image. It (v2 and 200) has many more features and is more up to date than the v1 model and the nicest feature for me is that this model has only one fan which is a lot more quiet than the two fans I heard on the v1 model. The v1 sounded like a hair dryer set on low speed, this model puts out a whisper and is no louder than a whirring fan of a quiet desktop PC.
The web interface is informative and easy to use. It works best on IE and the shipped discovery tool software is Windows-only. The switch can still be managed via Firefox or Safari once its IP address is known. I have had little need to configure the more advanced functions of the switch (flood control, RADIUS, QoS, and the myriad of security settings), I really don't need them at this point.
