Acer Aspire AS1410-8804 11.6-Inch Black Laptop - 6 Hour Battery Life Review

Acer Aspire AS1410-8804 11.6-Inch Black Laptop - 6 Hour Battery Life

I keep checking out the Netbooks that come into the hardware lab where I work, looking for something to replace a cheap one I bought for my kids to play with, but they all just seem too small. As a result I've been poking around the high-end of the Netbook spectrum / low end of the Ultra-portable spectrum for something more usable. The Acer Aspire 1410 series does a great job of bridging the gap between small low cost "Netbooks" and more expensive "Ultra-portables" (which is what Acer classes this as). It manages to overcome many of the short comings of Netbooks without getting anywhere near the $1000+ price range of most ultra-portables. It has a few drawbacks, notably material quality: like a lot of Acer products the plastic molding is attractive and the tolerances are tight. However the quality of the plastic is more in line with what you would expect with a Netbook (which is to say it is lower density plastic and more likely to scratch or break). To me it's reasonable that the overall component quality is lower than what I would get if I spent $1000 (display not as nice, finish not as refined, buttons not as responsive, etc...). Still, overall this is a well put together computer with good build quality considering the price. While I didn't end up buying one myself if might be the right fit for you: if you are on a budget and you need a small laptop that can do more than browse web pages this would be a very good choice.
Let's go over the specs:
CPU: The Core 2 ULV SU3500 is a great CPU choice and far more powerful than the Atom CPU found in most Netbooks. This is a single core (as opposed to the two core "Core2 Duo") Ultra Low Voltage cpu running at 1.4GHz. Depending on the exact application this CPU is about 3-6x more powerful than the typical Atom Processor. It also has 3 MB of cache (cache is a form of on-chip high speed memory) vs the Atom's 512 KB. With 6x the cache of the Atom this CPU is going to spend a lot more time running instructions and a lot less time waiting on the memory sub-system. It also helps that the Core 2 ULV SU3500 memory bus is about 25% faster than what you will find on an Atom. The Core2 is technically more power hungry than the Atom but when running applications the difference isn't significant (5 watts for the Core2 vs 1.5 watts for Atom). The main difference happens when in standby or sleep mode where the Atom will use much less power than the Core2 (because the kind of transistors on the Atom "leak" less power than those used on the Core2 when in those modes). So if you need long battery life while carrying your computer around in standby with brief periods of activity you might prefer the Atom based Netbooks (say for sales calls on the road). I think most users will probably prefer the Core2 - I know that I do. Update: there may be a dual core version of this coming out soon. It's on the list to arrive where I work but that doesn't mean it will be sold in the US.
MEMORY: 2GB of DDR2 RAM is plenty and the 667Mhz memory speed is good enough (faster notebooks go up to 1066Mhz). This system runs Vista which is more memory hungry than the Windows XP or Linux found on most Netbooks so 2GB, while enough, doesn't go as far as you might think. Still, as long as your aren't planning on doing any really serious gaming 2GB will handle the typical office application with no troubles.
HDD: The 250GB HDD has plenty of storage given that most users don't use more than 50GB. Serious gamers and video encoders will need a lot more space than this.
DISPLAY: The 11.6" 1366x768 screen looks good and is a lot more useable than the 8-10" screens found on most Netbooks. The resolution is much better than what you will find on most Netbooks and it is reasonably bright (200 nits vs 300+ nits on higher end laptop). I passed on this model because the viewing angle is limited (the manufacturer list the viewing angles as 60vert/90horiz compared to 120v/140h on a high end display) and my sons like to sit with me and watch YouTube videos. The limited viewing angles might be a selling point for somebody traveling who would prefer not to share what's on their screen with others. So while Acer clearly saved some money here it's still a good display: unless you need a really high quality LCD I think most people will be pretty happy with this screen (again it's far better than what you'll find in most Netbooks). For those few who care it's made by AU Optronics and I think it's model B116XW01.
GRAPHICS: The Intel Mobile GMA X4500HD graphics won't impress any gamers but if you're running business applications it will do just fine. Update: they loaded Autocad on this thing at work and it wasn't pretty. It might have been a driver issue but the render times were terrible. It's not really a surprise but don't buy this to run your CAD software. Of course for most users this won't be an issue.
AUDIO: notebooks are not known for great speaker sound and this notebook doesn't break from that trend. Again it's better than most Netbooks but not by a lot. Update: With headphones on I found the sound to be fine.
DRIVES: Like most Netbooks and Ultra-portables this has no CD or DVD drive. I recommend buying an external CD Drive. The software industry may start to switch over to USB drives soon (Windows 7 will be sold on USB drives) so this may not be a big deal for much longer. Today it's a pain to not have a CDROM.
BATTERY: The 6 cell battery is perfect for this notebook (thanks to the low power components). This notebook is probably too small for an 8 cell to fit cleanly but the 4 cell found in most Netbooks just isn't adequate, even for an Atom CPU. This 6 cell battery will provide about 3-5 hours of real use though with aggressive power saving modes you can get over six hours. Update: we have two of these in our hardware lab and it was just pointed it out to me that one (which came pre-release) had a higher capacity battery than the release version (5600mAH vs. 4400mAH). I've adjusted my battery life numbers down to reflect the release version. Interestingly the non-US version of this laptop has the higher capacity battery. I can only assume Acer was trying to bring the price down to compete in the tight US netbook market.
WEIGHT: Coming in a 3.1 lbs this is tiny bit heavier than the typical Netbook but not by much (Netbooks will range from 2-3lbs). Most regular notebooks are 6-8 lbs.
WIRELESS: The usual Intel 5100 A/G/N supports the most common standards ("A" and "G") along with the new "N" standard. You should have no trouble connecting to wireless networks. This is pretty standard though a few laptops will support 3G out of the box.
In short: while this notebook isn't perfect it is well built and unlike most Netbooks, actually has a decent CPU. It's small and light but big enough that you can actually use it. If you've got 1K-2K to spend you can get a better Ultra-Portable notebook (I'm partial to Sony's and Apple's offerings in that segment) but in this price range there isn't much competition.
Oh I should note that while this model is dark blue, Acer makes this in two other colors you can buy:
Acer Aspire AS1410-8913 11.6-Inch Ruby Red
Acer Aspire AS1410-8804 11.6-Inch Black
Also if you're outside the US this might be sold as the "Acer Timeline 1810T" locally and may have slightly different specs (such as a better battery).

Bought from another retailer for $549 6 mos ago, Long battery life, super quiet and never gets HOT!. Great for lap use. Above average performance. Much better than all the HP's and compaq'e we've owned. So far reliable. Recommended. One thing thing below expectations is the touch pads over sensitivity in sizing and resizing pages when surfing.

When receiving the package, I immeadiately charged it. Afterwards, downloaded all the programs that I needed to replace my four year old laptop. Talked to the internet company to get that started (my fault b/c I forgot a step to set up). After my set-up was done, I absolutely LOVE it!!!!
My soul purpose for the Timeline is writing. But I do need to carry the laptop to different locations and interview clients. And this "dream" laptop is a sure delight. The processing speed is quick for what I do. Downloads are fast. And the biggest plus....this laptop does not get HOT like my old one. So, I'm ditching the "lap"top cooler! I'm free to roam.
The Battery life is outstanding! I surfed the web for over two hours(unplugged from the ac adaptor) before I came to write this review, my indicator is showwing 90%...8 hours left! WOW!!! Granted, I did some tweaking to the display and power adjustments. But still, 8 hours left after two hours of surfing the net....I love this laptop!
Now the down side. If you're looking to webcam with this laptop, you'll be disappointed. You need to be outside for the proper lighting. Or you can have the lamp light your face if you're indoors. I have adjusted the webcam to a certain degree, but still the quality wasn't there. But like I mentioned before, the soul purpose is for writing.
PRO: Lightweight, Battery life!
CONS: Webcam quality.
If anything should arise in the near future, I'll add it to my review.
I highly suggest the Timeline X to everyone who is in my position.
Addendum:
Someone asked for the Windows Experience Index:
Processor: Calculations Per Second..... 6.3
Mem(RAM): Memory Ops Per Second..... 5.9
Graphics: Desktop Performance for Win..4.7
Gaming Graphics: Performance.....4.9
Primary Hard Disk: Data transfer..... 5.9

This is a great laptop. I read reviews and info about this for more than a month before laying down the cash for it. I've been extremely happy with it. It's thin and sexy. It's light (especially for a 15 inch laptop). It's extremely cool. The performance is good but not amazing. I mostly work with music editing and notation software and this laptop has handled all them fine. I play games online with it and I have yet to find a game that it can't handle (it should be noted I only play games from the browser and have no idea how a real computer game would do, but I know since this doesn't have a graphics card it probably wouldn't do well with 3d graphics, but I dont really know.) For everyday computing this computer has all the power you need. The 15 inch model is great too. The keyboard is full sized (which was somewhat of an adjustment after using cramped keyboards for so long) and the number pad is extremely helpful (at least to me).
The battery life is why you buy this computer. All day computing is no lie. I used to own a Dell and a Toshiba which got about 3 hours battery life at best, and then up to 10 minutes as they got old. It's been hard to break the habit of packing my power adapter when I leave but I've never needed it. I can go to school all day, take my computer to class, work in the library or cafeteria and never need to worry about running out of juice. If I crank it up to "High Performance" I can get a solid 5 to 6 hours of battery, on "Power Saver" I get an easy 8 and a half and if I turn off the WiFi I can get a little more then 10 hours. I've never, never, never, run it down completely during normal use.
Overall a great computer at a great price. Everything you need with an unbelievable battery life. Free yourself from the wall socket and buy this computer!

Data can be backed up to an external hard drive, flash card, thumb drive or to a secure hidden partition on their PC.

Extended Battery Life via Low Power Components and Acer's PowerSmart FeaturesWhile most notebooks with long battery life use higher cell batteries which protrude from the back of the notebook, Acer combined numerous low power components with a standard high-capacity 6-cell battery, allowing them to keep the design as small as possible.
In addition, a conveniently located PowerSmart button located above the keyboard allows you to easily extend battery life. A simple press of the button activates the advanced power savings settings, traditionally a tedious procedure accessed through numerous software-based steps. This one-button approach simplifies the process.

Lastly, an Acer PowerSmart adapter senses when the notebook is unplugged, and stops sending needless energy. It also stops pulling power from the wall outlet when the adapter is full. The PowerSmart adapter saves 1752 watts of energy a year--equivalent to lighting a 15-watt (65W equivalent) light bulb for 116 days.

I bought the first one when it came out last August in Europe. It is the same specs as the US sold one. I also purchased this again from Amazon for a gift and have in the household the Acer AS1830T-3721 (i5 model), and the AS1830T-3505 (i3 model), both purchased here on Amazon.
The Acer 1830t i3/i5/i7 are all physically the same computer. Only the processor, hard drive size, installed ram amount, and Bluetooth 3.0 separate the 3 models, therefore, reviews on those models apply here as well.

Also the older Acer 1810 with an Intel SU7300, Acer 1551 with an AMD Athlon II Neo Dual-Core Processor K325/K625, Acer TravelMate 8172 with an Intel i3/Win 7 Pro, and Aspire One 721 with an AMD Athlon II Neo Processor K125--netbook category, are the same basic computer chassis. This saves Acer a lot of money by offering several different models under the same platform--and gives us consumers more choices. If you are looking at this size PC check out Acer's current variants. Acer also owns Gateway and re-brands these 11.6 inch models. If you don't mind what the label says on the outside you can find similar models with Gateway that might have different sale prices. Compare both labels and shop around before you buy.
For budget buyers the i3 models (AS1830T-3505 and AS1830T-3921), are quite nice. The -3505 ships with 250GB drive, the -3921 ships with a 320GB drive, the -3505 is being heavily discounted. The i3-330UM is the same as the i5 but without speed step, it's fixed at 1.2GHz but still utilizes 4 hyper threads (2 per core). You can upgrade the ram and HDD at anytime money allows while still having a respectable laptop PC.
People like myself who are computer gurus, must have the latest whether we need it or not. I bought the i5 model for myself but passed it on to family after I got this i7. I did the same immediate upgrades I did on the i5 model by installing a Kingston 425 128GB SSD, (same MLC and Controller as the infamous Intel G2 but for a fraction of the cost), and 8GB PC3 10600 Crucial RAM. The cost difference from the i5/i7 is currently at 200$ simply for a faster more powerful processing unit. For a guru like myself most definitely a necessity. This is my dream machine. It is only lacking a dedicated graphics card, (GMU). My cost with RAM and SSD upgrade came to 1,300$, (current cost (02/11),>$1,100.
End results:
i3 models--worth their weight in gold. AS1830T-3505/AS1830T-3921, best value there is no better deal to be had as of current. It allows RAM and HDD upgrades. Also in this budget is the TravelMate 8172 with i3/2GB ram/Win7 Pro and the 1551 with AMD Athlon II Neo Dual-Core Processor K325/K625 and ATI discrete graphics.
i5 model--worth its weight in platinum. AS1830T-3927, at a current 600-700$ this is the model to have. It will handle just about anything you can throw at it and most likely, for its intended purpose, satisfy all users. Even upgrading ram to a max 8GB and the hard drive to an SSD still keeps cost under 1000$ which is very respectable and most likely will come down in a few months.
i7 model--worth its weight in titanium. AS1830T-68U118, at a current 800-900$, the extra 200$ it will cost to get the i7 processor will not see a huge gain. It is not a GAMER machine like the Dell Alienware m11x, but can be used as a media hub for all your multimedia entertainment. This model still lacks a discrete graphics and without one falls short of larger i3/i5/i7 models in the same price point. If having a dedicated GMU is important you may want to consider a larger 13/14-inch screen with an i3/i5/i7/discrete graphics for the same money. It comes down to size and weight VS ultimate performance. I have added a list of models that have dedicated graphics cards in the comments section.BATTERY RUN TIME:
The AS1830T-series includes a 5800mAh 6-cell Lithium Ion battery that sits nearly flush. Acer accomplishes this by moving the keyboard forward and cutting the battery casing into the top of the laptop frame. This gives it a nearly flush (top to bottom and out the back) fitment. Acer states an 8 hour run dead time. My experience is about 5.5 hours using WiFi and Bluetooth without letting it sleep and about 6 and up to 7 hours with Bluetooth off with rest periods in-between.
SCREEN:
Very impressive. Mercury and lead free LED backlighting (Light Emitting Diode) LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) at 11.6 inches diagonal measure 1366 x 768 pixels (720P 16x9). It has a 200-nit high brightness. The backlighting is extremely even (many reports with graphs showing this--just search the net), and consistent color at varying angles. It does lend on the blue side of the hue (cool temperature), which can't be dialed out with white balance. But again, you would never notice unless you have this side by side with a high end monitor or comparing pantone standards. It is still best in class.
GRAPHICS:
The Acer AS1830T-Series (except for the AMD ones which use ATI), use Intel HD with shared video ram of 128MB. While this is better than the older Intel GMA 4500 of the last generation, it is not a substitute for dedicated graphics or integrated graphic chips. It is enough power to help render HD video off the web and use the HDMI on the laptop to play video content on your big screen monitor, it will not play games with any kind of authority. It will render 3D imagines in software like Chief Architecture, Adobe CS5 and such but not like one would be use to on a desktop. Again, this is an ultra portable and I don't think many people will be trying to use it for these things on the couch/bed/airport lobby.
KEYBOARD/TOUCH PAD:
This is Acers short coming. The keyboard has been slightly improved over the last gen (1810), but only with layout. It still has some flex and even though the keys are large enough not to miss key often, they are chiclit style and don't have enough tactile feedback to use efficiently. Even still, there are worse designs out there and in this price range I say Acer rates mid-level. One complaint I read a lot about is that Acer moved the keyboard forward to accommodate a flush battery. This limits palm rest area and reduced the touch pad size. My personal preference is I like it better. I would rather have a flush battery and actually don't like to rest my palms on the leading edge of the laptop. The touch pad is an Alps version. Small, and not well designed. Acer has gone the multi touch/swipe way which is not well executed. When scrolling the touch pad often locks with an `action' function making if painfully difficult to simply scroll down/up or across the screen with the pointer without it locking. Also the left and right buttons have a loud stiff click. Unfortunately there is no `off' button to this multi jester function and one must adapt to it. My answer is a portable mouse when I can. And again, it is not the worst in the business, but improvement is in order for Acer.
SIZE/WEIGHT/CHASSIS:
One of the best features of the Acer is how compact and light it is for being nearly a full PC. At 3.1 lbs it is very easy to handle. You can pick it up by the corner and hardly know you are holding anything. Not much bigger than most netbooks. Once you have this in your hands it feels even thinner than the 1 inch spec sheet says. I also like that Acer keeps the 6-cell battery almost flush so there is no huge protruding appendage sticking out the back or angled down .Its reinforced plastic casing has an aluminum skin on the top edge and Acer has improved stress points over last gen (1810), so there is less flex and seam separation between the upper and lower halves and screen surround.
RAM:
RAM and HDD can be accessed by a removable cover on the bottom. HDD is a 2.5 inch Serial ATA drive with a maximum thickness of 9.5mm. the higher capacity drives over 640GB are 12mm in thickness and will not fit-(cover won't close). Also under this cover is the PCI-e 1x16 but Acer does not include this on most models. Misleading specs has Acer stating 4GB max ram capabilities. The Intel Arrandale Ultra Low Voltage (UM) versions can accept up to 8GB DDR3 RAM, 4GB x 4GB 204-pin SODIMM. The AS1830T's come packaged with PC3-10600 RAM (1333MHz) instead of the norm 8500 (1066MHz) RAM. When upgrading I recommend you upgrade to like same. While you can mix speeds it is not the best practice. If you are disposing of all factory ram you can re-install the PC3-8500 and it will work fine, but if you are only replacing one of the two sticks you should use the faster PC3-10600 version to match. Whether you go with 1066MHz or 1333MHz is redundant as the Intel Arrandale UM's only read PC3-800 and will automatically downgrade the speed. Cost between PC3-8500 and PC3-10600 is roughly the same, the problem is finding 4GB sticks in the PC3-10600 version. I have mostly used Crucial but have also used Kingston, Corsair, and Patriot Signature without cause. Plus all these brands offer lifetime warranties.
PORTS and WIRELESS:
Acer is loaded with connection abilities both wired and wireless. Wireless toggling is handled by soft keys now instead of hard keys (FN with F3). The 68U118 offers the new Bluetooth 3.0 +HS which use the collocated 802.11 for speeds up to 24Mb/sec when communicating with another Bluetooth 3.0 devise such as the Samsung Galaxy cell phone. Other AS1830T models use the Bluetooth 2.1 or can have Bluetooth added like in the AS1830T-3505. WAN uses Draft N in all models which are pretty standard these days. Acer runs the antenna around the screen giving better signal lock and very strong connections. For wired connections you have full HDMI that carries digital 5.1 surround...Read more›

I had been using a netbook and liked the size and battery life it provided...however, I'm in my 70's and dealing with the small font, not to mention the slow speed of the netbook, I was growing tired of the netbook in general. When I read the reviews on this laptop I ordered one right off the bat. Most impressed with the battery life (I would guess I get about 6 1/2 hours and the speed is off the map by comparison top the netbook. Granted it's much bigger but does only weigh a bit over 5 pounds...terrific computer. Lightening fast!!
I have had 3 variations of Acer Computers and good luck with all of them.
