I bought this laptop for myself about 3 weeks ago hoping it would be a decent gaming laptop, and I am very happy with my purchase. The case and finish don't scream high-quality, but it is sturdy and feels like a decent product. Initial bootup was a breeze, and within no time I was installing my normal programs and downloading my games off of Steam.
The Phenom P940 quad-core is fast enough for all of my needs, and so is the 5400rpm hard drive. I don't notice much difference between it and the 7200rpm one in my desktop. Games run very well thanks to the Radeon HD 5650. I don't expect to play all games at max settings, but Dead Rising 2 on low settings never dips below 30FPS, and even on high settings (no blur) with 4xAA and 8x anisotropic filtering never drops below mid 20s. In addition, through some google searching I found the 5650 is overclockable. Keeping track of temps, I've been running stable after bumping the core by 100mhz and the memory by 25mhz, with room to spare.
The Harman Kardon speakers sound very clear and have great range for laptop speakers. They are great for movies and games (I don't notice much difference between them and a Rosewill 2.1 external USB speaker set). However, for accurate music listening I recommend external speakers, as the bass these speakers push out doesn't quite cut it.
The display is both a pro and a con in my mind. The colors are vibrant now that I've calibrated them in control panel (cut down blue a lot lowered red a little and lowered gamma), but the contrast changes sharply in the vertical direction. If you are looking at a black screen, you will always either see a lack of contrast at the bottom, slightly inverted blacks at the top, or both. Fortunately, I do not notice this very often during normal use. The 1366 x 768 resolution is great in my mind because it is sharp enough and doesn't tax the video card like higher resolutions would (higher resolution = lower frame-rates in games).
The battery life on this laptop, is poor. I'll be lucky if I ever see 2 hours of life out of it between charges. During gameplay I'll be happy if it lasts an hour. Always have the power cable handy!
All things considered, this is a great laptop for gaming and all of my other casual needs. It's quiet, doesn't get too hot, has a backlit keyboard, multi-touch trackpad, etc. Webcam is kind of crap, but it's better than nothing. I'd recommend this to others who don't mind staying near outlets.EDIT 3/13/2011: I now rate this laptop at 4.5 stars, and here's why. It seems I jumped the gun on declaring the battery in this laptop "poor". It's still not great, but I've gotten over 2 hours of internet browsing and document editing out of it multiple times now. Whether the battery has actually improved some over the initial few months of use, or I had initially developed a bias against it because of its poor gaming life, will remain a mystery.
