A great product all around. It comes with lots of capabilities (itunes server, iSCSI to name a few) and the setup through the web interface is quite simple and intuitive.
I have not made performance tests yet but I have not had any issue so far.
It's worth mentioning that there was an error (model) in my shipment but customer support at QNAP was very responsive - kudos!

I truly love my QNAP NAS. It was reasonably priced for all the capability that I got. I have a mixed office of MacIntosh, PC , and Unix systems. Getting this device to work with all of them was virtually plug-n-play.

I researched reviews, tech specs, drives for the last two years before I settled on this product.
QNAP has one of the best reputations in the industry for quality and workmanship. This has an extremely low power draw and I've acheived write speeds of 65 MB a second over gigabit ethernet which is far greater than USB 2.0 (roughly 25 MB a second).
This product is half the price of a TS-459 Pro+ ($900 before tax).
I bought all enterprise drives for additional reliability (WD RE4) I'm currently upgrading to Hitachi Ultrastar 3 TB drives. The new firmware (3.4) from QNAP provides support 3 TB drives. So max would be 6 TB for Raid-1, 12 TB for (JBOD, RAID 0), and somewhere inbetween for Raid 5.
Good luck and don't forget to get a UPS to protect your data in case of a power outage!

Before I say anything, I'll be clear that the reason this item did not get 5 stars is because of the price.
A long whiles back, I acquired the ever faithful Qnap 409Turbo Pro 4 bay unit that has served quite well over its life until now. Loaded with 4 1tb drives, it continued to work and fulfill its purpose well.
As time went by, I needed more space and realized that the 409 was great for moderate amount of file transfer and limited to how many could access the unit at once. It simply was operated best when only one or possibly two tasks were being done with it.
After careful research, I opted for the slower, cooler and greener drives with capacity of 2tb each for a new NAS.
After careful consideration, reading reviews including those at SmallNetBuilders, I narrowed my choice down to the Synology 1010, QNAP 639 and one of the variant of the Thecus 7700. With closer review, I found that the QNAP was capable in its 5 bay model of excellent speed and ability to add drives if needed, externally.
The QNAP TS-559pro fitted with 5 Samsung 2tb 5400 rpm drives became the new NAS to serve my needs. This unit has a dual atom processor that outshines the little ARM processor in the 409 (I believe it is an ARM processor).
As I do lots of file transfers, usually over the RAM size of the unit, I found that both up and down speeds with FTP was nearly 10x that of 409pro. The 409 upload might yield an average of 8mbs while the 559 (even with the slower drives) was averaging around 80 or greater. This was amazing and a true time saver.
I fiddled with iSCSI with reasonable results but may work with it later to do time machine backups at a later date once I establish how I want to exploit the NAS entirely. I can say the iSCSI does work well for those interested in this feature.
The Web File Manager is a very nice front end but a caveat - if you have files larger than 2 gigs, it will not handle them. It only handles (at least in my experience) files up to 2 gigs. Thus, FTP or "drag and drop" fills the bill here instead.
Overall the Web based interface for the QNAP series is fairly easy to understand and navigate. This is even more so with a refresh of the firmware to the latest incarnation.
One challenge I have is I use Cyberpower UPS units for back up. QNAP doesn't recognize those and in turn, while the Cyberpower will go to battery mode during a black out, it wont turn off the QNAP. If you use APC based UPS units, they should work with the QNAP models including the TS-559pro.
Would I recommend this unit? Answer is if you have the money to burn you would probably appreciate this unit for its elegance, quiet operation, certainly the speed and the features found within.
Twonky Media player comes with the unit and I admit I had some issues with it. I elected to go with a download of the 4x version that was treated as an "add on/plug in" and it worked very well and couldn't be happier. This is a minor flaw to date that was easily remedied.
The advantage of these units is not just the clean sleek look, and many features but a thoughtful interface and a very active community that via forum help each other out when questions and problems arise. The latter is often missed by those purchasing computer related equipment or software and can be invaluable at times. The QNAP community is fairly friendly and certainly helpful.
The reason I went with the 559 vs 639 was the fact it was more powerful/faster and it will take some time for me to fill up the NAS which is set at RAID 5. That is 10 TB of total space and the usable space once raided is approx 7.7 TB. Understand that formatting the drive and also creating parody eats up one drive plus a small amount. This is acceptable to me. The downside of QNAP is they do not support 0+1 or 1+0 Raid scenarios or Raid 3. However, Raid 5 for most people is certainly a great compromise of speed and drive failure redundancy. RAIDED NAS is NOT a back up but good for data replication. I do admit I use it for both and willing to take the risk for the unit itself to fail and drives.
The Bottom line - if you have the bucks to burn, this is an excellent unit with excellent speed and features.

This unit flat out performs. Once you have a very basic knowledge of Linux or use the software to set a static address you are well on your way. When I first got this unit I just threw in an old 250GB HD I had laying around and setup some iSCSI LUNs for my VMWare environment in a test lab - very easy to do and no issues encountered. I then migrated to a RAID1 (250) and now a 2TB RAID1 all without having to pwr the unit off. For giggles I tested NFS and joining it to my domain testing access by windows users who were oblivious that they were connecting to a NAS appliance. Media Station works without a hitch for both Windows and MAC clients. Tested and confirm that the Amazon S3 feature works flawlessly with most current firmware. I highly recommend this to any serious home user or a Small Business who has needs for iSCSI and or file storage. The Backup Exec recent additions make me realize that the folks at QNAP have their fingers to the pulse of what folks want and they constantly work on improving the unit. I not yet had to call support, so I cannot speak to how their support is, but their documentation is very concise and easy to follow. I love the fact that this unit is both Citrix and VMWare Certified and to date I have tested putting an MS Exchange 2007 CCR database and SQL 2005 and 8 databases all running at the same time with no major spikes on the CPU or memory on the unit or slowing in performance. I will note that the SQL db was a mere 10GB db that I threw a few thousand rows at it to grow it to that size - Exchange was also kept small, 20GB - but like i said, small business. I plan to recommend this to a few of my clients and I will post my findings\reviews once I have done so.

Bought QNAP NAS unit after some research. I have a lot of video files and photos scattered in several hard drives and it was time to organize. Unit arrived promptly and well packed. Hard drive installation was simple. Set as RAID 5 with 4 Seagate 1.5T drives. Using NAS software was able to easily upload video files under 2G but it has that size limit using browser based software(support explanation). Had to upgrade firmware which was a relatively simple process. After calling support was guided through process of mapping NAS on network as drive where I can drag and drop any file size. Support was quite good and prompt even performing remote hardware adjustments. If documentation had been better I could have probably been able to do this myself. Unit kept ejecting one drive from RAID (which required long rebuild process several times) which after some research appeared to be a problem with the Seagate drives(?). After another support fix this has stopped happening for now. Adding a 5th drive to RAID was not possible with their software(although it's supposed to)and again prompt support remote hardware reconfiguration resolved issue. This part I don't think the average user could pull off. So unit seems to be good but for poor documentation and apparent software issues which were fixed with good support. I will not get rid of my old drives (good advice for anyone) until I feel more confident with unit.

I like the System, easy interface, so many set up options!
Overall opinion, recommend, very happy with purchase, my main concern was power outages and the ability for the system to manage a UPS and shut down as needed, and this puppy does this!
Only one personal thought, as I like to run drives as cool as possible!
The temperature fan control can not be automatically adjusted for temperatures below the 45°C which means the drives are starved of air flow, more so on the center drives - 2 & 3!
The only work around is to set the fan into manual mode fan run 24/7, in LOW - MED - HIGH!
HDD temp control is paramount over System Temp, well for me!
My System has 4 2TB HDD, with the fan set in Auto mode, temps as follows, system idle, I am yet to test the rig while under constant data load!
System temperature 38°C/100°F
HDD 1 temperature 42°C/107°F
HDD 2 temperature 47°C/116°F
HDD 3 temperature 47°C/116°F
HDD 4 temperature 45°C/113°F
Once the Fan was set to LOW HDD temp dropped to 76°F across the board!
Not so noisy, but I do not have it in the AV room with TV so I have no concern with fan noise!
Later,
Matt.

I have both the Synology and QNAP NAS. I used them for work & home. Ranging models from the Syn DS109, DS411j, & DS1010+; for QNAP model's I have TS-259 & TS-459U. If you need to know the specs, go to their Web sites and do some comparison.
This review is to compare their features. Feel free to comment, if I missed something.
Advantage QNAP, for encrypted file-system. Syn doesn't have this feature.
Advantage QNAP, for virtual disk support. Syn doesn't have this feature.
Advantage QNAP, for SSH/FTP option for root. Syn you will have to mod.
Advantage QNAP, for NIC teaming, like balance-rr, active backup, balance xor, broadcast, dynamic link aggr., balance-tlb, & balance-alb. Syn only have 802.3ad & non-802.3ad.
Advantage QNAP, Web management homepage has RSS feed about latest firmware.
Advantage Syn, for Web management with multi-tasking.
Advantage Syn, for mobile support. QNAP deployed theirs, but not too long ago.
NFSv3 for both QNAP & Syn, what a bummer. I heard NFSv4 is on the works.
For pricing Syn has the upper hand. If you use NAS for your home and don't mind not having the features I listed, you can't go wrong with Synology.
QNAP seems to have the upper hand on features and hardware specs on their product line. Supporting VMware and Citrix as a NAS, out of the box. They are both good and the Buffalo, Netgear, Linksys, & Seagate NAS has been left behind.
BTW: This QNAP TS-459U already comes with rack rails for mounting. I give 4.5 stars on this product, deducting half a point for NFSv3.
