Monster Cable MP AVS 2000 Home Theatre Automatic Voltage Stabilizer Review

Monster Cable MP AVS 2000 Home Theatre Automatic Voltage Stabilizer

(More customer reviews)
==UPDATE 9/2008 == When I wrote this it was $860. Now it's $200 more. This only strengthens my view that a quality UPS is a better solution than a home theater product.
I liked D. Bowman's review but he needs to change the word "watts" to "volts" i.e. "most neighborhoods fluctuate +/- 3 to 4 VOLTS" would be accurate, but not WATTS. WATTS is how much power YOU are using like a 100 WATT lightbulb, VOLTS is what is comming into your house and varries a little bit over a day based not only on your neighbors usage but yours as well. In the USA most homes get two 120 volt (average) circuits which combined make 240 volts for high power devices. A neighborhood uses thousands of watts. You should not need to be concerned about this to use your stereo or TV. Most every consumer product, including your HDTV, stereo, etc, is designed to handle this normal variation in voltage.
Now onto the AVS2000. A Psychiatrist did a study by holding a seminar where 50% of the audience was allowed in FREE, and the other 50% had to pay $50 for the advice, which was just plain common sense. Both groups were then asked to evaluate the seminar after they attended it.
Those who got it free felt "it was OK" while those who lost $50 had much more complimentary reviews like "It will be a life changing experience". This is common human nature to believe you did not get ripped off and a key to marketing high profit stereo equipment. I've heard people say that after buying monster cables for $200 their stereo sounded much more musical. I asked them to define "musical" and they couldn't.
The AVS 2000 is not a life changing experience, but it does lighten your wallet several hundred dollars, and you naturally will say it's the best power strip you can buy, which is probably true. But do you need its ability?
While the 2000 has some nice bells and whistles, and it does stagger the power on sequence of your equipment to prevent startup current surges, another feature I like, it is overkill for 90+% of all MODERN equipment. If you own a 1970's $20,000 stereo with TUBE amplifiers then you will probably derive a REAL benefit from the 2000's ability to regulate voltage. You MIGHT even be able to hear it.
On the other hand, If your equipment was made in the past 10 years, take a look at the nameplate data (usually stamped where the power cord goes into the device) and it will likely say "Input Voltage 100-120" or maybe "100-240 volts AC 50-60 Hz" if it is meant for international markets like many products these days. If your house outlet is in the 110-115 VAC range, which most are, then your equipment will perform EXACTLY as intended without the AVS2000. A $10 voltmeter can tell you what your voltage is.
HDTV won't be any better with the AVS2000 than without it. Your stereo won't be any louder with than without it. You'll have a hard time to hear anything more "musical" like the salesman said you would.
Monster products tend, in general, to be well made overbuilt cables with great strain reliefs built in and oversized conductors. Their equipment is aimed at the true audiophile who has money to burn on a $100 cable instead of the cheap one that came in the box with his new DVD player. Their packaging is advertising how important the product is. They are high profit margin items for stereo stores to sell with a system that has a limited profit margin on the main item. Former used car salesman turned stereo experts will tell you how much "more musical" your system investment will be if you spend another $300 in cables or $900 in power strips. Of course you can't setup 2 identical systems in the store to see this for yourself, i.e. a direct A-B comparison like we do in the laboratory.
Monster products are very nicely made, and I do own several of them, however I did not pay for mine, they were given to my lab and I was paid to evaluate them against other alternatives, and comparing a $110 monster fiber optic cable against a $10 no-name fiber optic cable showed zero difference in connecting an optical digital output to an amplifier. Being digital, it either works or it does not work.
The AVS2000 does what it says. Most devices sold today, however, simply don't need it.
If your equipment can tolerate a wide range of input volatages, and you are not having power problems where you live, then this is NOT the solution for you. Your HDTV will look better if you spend the money for an AVS2000 on a bigger screen.
If you ARE having problems with your power, GET THEM FIXED! I had power problems and contacted my utility provider who fixed their transformer on the pole to get rid of them permanently, for free. Using a $100 digital voltmeter I could show the utility that the voltage dropped every day at 6PM when people cooked dinner below 100 volts Line-Neutral at the meter. This was outside of their specification and they were required by law to fix it.
For the price of the AVS2000 you can buy a comparable computer grade UPSAPC SUA1500RM2U 120V 1500VA USB and Serial RM 2U Smart UPS System with similar voltage regulation and it will prevent your stereo/TV from shutting off and back on 5 seconds later when the power goes out momentarily during a storm. The AVS 2000 can't do that. UPSs also have surge supression and some simple metering if you want those features. This one is rackmount and will go nicely in a stereo rack, and is less expensive than the AVS2000 while doing more. (the APC UPS can make power when there is none, the AVS2000 can not)
The AVS2000 is a niche item for people with older equipment that suffers from improper voltage. For most modern systems it is overkill and not needed. It has lots of impressive looking meters but lacks performance for its pricepoint.

AVS 2000 is designed to stabilize power line fluctuations and maintain constant voltage to your home theatre. Voltage sags (below the standard RMS value of 120 volts) are often caused by power-hungry appliances like clothes washers, air conditioners, and electric heaters, which draw more power (over 1500 watts) than your house was designed to support. This can have a direct effect on home theatre components, including amplifiers and two piece projection systems, which require a lot of power to operate at an optimum performance level. As a result, the picture can lose brightness and suddenly shrink in size.Amplifiers change gain structure which results in nasty distortions. They also won't deliver peak power, dropping from 100 watts to as low as 60 watts, for example. Your home theatre is very power hungry, too, often drawing twice as much power as a washer and air conditioner combined. This can cause even more voltage sags and ultimately, inferior home theatre performance. With AVS 2000, all your high power devices will maintain the stability needed to deliver peak power and performance. You'll enjoy the smoothest, most natural sound and the sharpest, brightest picture possible with vivid color. And, thanks to AVS 2000's sequential turn-on feature, your high power loads can operate at peak performance without causing unnecessary electrical stress that can often pop a circuit breaker or damage your components. "I highly recommend this component."Kevin Miller, Home Theater MagazineStereophile Guide to Home Theater Accessory of the Year Award 2001. Went from having a Kicker ZX 1000 Watt Mono to Rockford. Was very skeptical at first, but let me tell you...
It blew my expectations out of the water. It's the best amp i've ever owned. Solid, heavy, huge gain, huge sound. I'm slappin 2 12" Kicker VX with this amp @ 1 ohm. Killer, just killer. I could blow some serious ear drums with a quick bass test from this great amp.
Rockford is the way to go, never knew an amp could be so powerful. Mine BTW was rated at 1242 RMS...tested [per birthsheet]

Monster HDP 1800 8-Outlet Power Center with Stage 2 Clean Power Review

Monster HDP 1800 8-Outlet Power Center with Stage 2 Clean Power

Adding to Monster's 5 year warranty after speaking to customer service today:
1. Yes, they only replace if it's within 5 years from date of purchase. Must have receipt saved for 5 years. My HTS 2000 Power Center crapped out 5 months before the 5 years.
2. IMPORTANT: They said that they are only responsible for the connected equipment for 5 years. After 5 years, if the Power Center doesn't stop a surge from destroying whatever you've connected to it, they are not liable. So that means you have to buy a new Power Center every 5 years to make sure your equipment is protected. The customer service rep confirms this. I had him reluctantly repeat this back to me, and it didn't sound very good. Poor guy. But yes, you must buy a new Power Center every 5 years. So...in conclusion, you must factor this into the cost. I guess if you divide the price into 5, it's not that bad of a deal. Just remember to buy a new one every 5 years!

Monster Signature Series Automatic Voltage Stabilizer AVS 2000 Noel Lee Signature Series AVS2000 (MP AVS 2000 SS) Review

Monster Signature Series Automatic Voltage Stabilizer AVS 2000 Noel Lee Signature Series AVS2000 (MP AVS 2000 SS)

I own one of these and one of the non-signature series (red display).
(this is the same review that I wrote for the other ASV 2000)
If you invested a big pile of dough on a home A/V set up, why not feed it correctly. In the US our components are designed to run on 120 volts. But most average neighborhoods fluctuate (+ or -) 3 - 4 volts at all times. On really hot nights where everyone has their A/C on, it can fluctuate up to 8 or 9 volts.
This bad boy locks everything in at an even 120 volts. So your TV or stereo isn't having to make the adjustments itself, it can just focus on performing without any power stress.
As others have noted, make sure to use a good quality surge protector. I personally use the Monster HTS 3600 MKII.
My favorite part is the big displays. I find myself just watching the voltage readout it to see what the power rating is. The voltage display just tells you what you are feeding your components. The amp display helps you keep an eye out if you might have left a component on and didn't mean to. My kids are always leaving the DVD player or stereo on. If you notice a high amp readout, you know something was left on. My components are behind dark glass, it is hard to see if items are left on.
This 75 lb. beast will take up some space and has to be put on a very strong shelf. You will reserve the "lowest" shelf for your entertainment system for this bad boy. Consider it the anchor of your system.

Goldring NS-1000 Noise Canceling Headphone Review

Goldring NS-1000 Noise Canceling Headphone
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I found these when looking for a good pair of headphones and so far they work amazingly. The noise cancellation is great and drowns out most sounds from the outside while making the music your listening to sound better, and on triple A it lasts 40 hours! The highs are very good and the bass will deliver without being overpowering. They are super comfy even after 5 hours they dont crush your ears. Unlike Beats they dont distort the sound and would be great for studio monitoring. They are also tougher than beats, after one year of hours a day they only have a little crack but still sound great.
They also come with a nice hard shell case which will fit in any carry on bag and they look very modern and stylish.
Only one complaint, they leek noise when at higher volumes but not too much.
Happy listening.

Monster Turbine PRO High-Performance In-Ear Speakers (Copper) Review

Monster Turbine PRO High-Performance In-Ear Speakers (Copper)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Introduction:
Before I begin this review, I'd just like to thank the folks at Monster for their dedication and generosity in putting together the review program that gave me this opportunity. Do note that after the review program ends, the reviewer (or better known as me. ) does get the opportunity to keep the review unit. While I try to keep an unbiased tone in my reviews, I just wanted to put this disclaimer out there. For more information on this review program, please refer to here.
I have always been an IEM user from the very beginning. In fact, my first audiophile-worthy equipment were in-canal earphones. As I ventured deeper into the depths of high-fidelity audio and more specifically the full-size headphone "arena", I began to lose touch with the portable earphones world. I am happy to say that this new jewel from Monster has brought me back.
Head-Fi is known for, among other things, the overzealous hype surrounding new products, especially within the portable audio world, where new earphones seem to pop up everyday. Because of this, I was understandingly hesitant and cynical when Monster debuted its Turbine Pro line to overwhelmingly positive feedback. I am pleased to say, after trying these little devils out firsthand, that none of the applause was hype.Packaging, Accessories, and Build Quality:
Packaging-
The Monster Turbine Pro Copper IEMs (hereby denoted by MTPC) arrived in a plain brown box. I was immediately underwhelmed, thinking, "[...] earphones arriving in this?!" A second later, and I realized that I was staring at a FedEx shipping box.
A minute into unboxing the earphones from the clean, minimalistic magnetic black box, and I was instantly hooked. Calling this luxury was an understatement. The MTPC's packaging was superb, to say the least.
Accessories-
Unlike some of the cheaper, if you will, earphones and headphones I have purchased over the years, the MTPC came with a multitude of accessories, including:
A velvety "clasp" case
A magnetic button case
Bag of SuperTips
Bag of gel-filled tips
Bag of tri-flanges and foam tips
Bag of generic silicon tips
Anti-microphonic clothing clip
Holster-style tip holder
Antibacterial cleaning cloth
Documents
On the topic of accessories, the amazing array of tips the MTPC comes with really speaks to how much Monster cares about its customers. There has been a lot of interest on Head-Fi over the variety of tips Monster offers. At the pinnacle are the SuperTips. Called everything from the ultimate sleeves to "the best foam earphone tip on the market". Monster's SuperTips are hybrid foam tips encased by an external layer of soft, cushiony foam and sustained internally by a thick, sturdy silicon of tube. This combination resulted in excellent isolation and comfort, combined with minimal impact on the overall sound quality of the MTPC, a perfect aggregation that no other tip has reached. However, one caveat of the SuperTips is their relatively low durability compared to silicon tips. The silicon tube is easily separated from the exterior, and this might result in degradation in isolation and sound quality after a few months. In the end, nevertheless, SuperTips last far longer and sound better than foam tips, yet provide a more comfortable alternative to traditional silicon tips.
Build Quality-
On to build quality! Even the best earphone is no good if it can't withstand the stress of our daily routines and activities, which is why the build quality of an IEM is so important. One of the first things I noticed after looking at the MTPC was its heftiness. The brass earphones looked and felt practically indestructible, especially compared to the flimsy OEM earphone shells many other audio companies are using. Well, to adequately test the build quality of the MTPC, I decided to take my pair along with me on a 1500+ mile road trip! Needless to say, the MTPC survived the exhibition in tip-top shape, while my stock iPod earbuds died along the way. One downside of the excellent brass design is weight. The MTPC felt heavier in my ears than other comparably sized earphones, but it did not bother me too much.
Monster's highly acclaimed cable management system is also included on the MTPC. A very well-built cable complete with a metal "L-jack" and "Y-split" added to the already glorious build quality of the MTPC. The included clothing clip also reduced microphonics to an almost non-existant level.Sound Quality:
Most of the attention surrounding the MTPC was centered around its unnaturally excellent sound quality. Of course, seeing as the MTPC retails at $400 and is marketed as a top-tier earphone, I was prepared to also be unnaturally critical. Yet, one minute into the first audition, and I was stunned. Blown away, even. The MTPC is unlike any earphone I have ever owned. More on that in a second.
Bass-
The MTPC is a bass-centric earphone. There's no way around that. And it's not a bad thing either. While its bass quantity falls short of the Sennheiser IE7/8's bass quantity, the MTPC makes it up in quality, producing some of the tightest, best-controlled bass I have ever heard on an earphone. The bass extends low enough for deep bass aficiandos, while staying strong and punchy enough to satisfy anyone from "bassheads" to lovers of lean, audiophilic bass. Impact is excellent, and bass detail retention is above par. There is a hint of muddiness, however, but I'm really just nitpicking now.
Mid-
Liquidy, natural, full, warm are just some of the words I'd use to describe the mids of the MTPC. Keeping in line with the overall balanced natural of the MTPC, the mids are no exception. They are slightly warm, yet still realistically detailed. They are full and weighty, yet still fast and agile. They are forward when needed, yet laid-back enough to not seem tiring. The mids of the MTPC are, in two words, almost perfect. A slight bit of mushiness combined with perhaps a little too much fullness prevents me from giving the MTPC's mids my utmost adoration. In the end, however, these are still some of the best mid frequencies I have heard on any earphone, barely falling short of the Shure SE530.
Treble-
Fans of treble will enjoy the MTPC's sparkle and smoothness in the upper frequencies. However, when compared to the other frequencies, I found the treble to be slightly lacking. In my opinion, there was a hint of recessiveness in the treble, especially in the upper-treble area. And while the MTPC can still be considered one of the most balanced earphones, it's bass-centricness does take just a nibble away from the treble. Compared to the Etymotic IEMs, the MTPC loses a bit on treble detail and aggresiveness. Overall, the MTPC's smooth and relaxing treble still won me over, giving me a much-needed break from the bright, hyper-aggresive upper frequencies of my Etymotic IEMs and my Grado and Ultrasone headphones.
Soundstage and Imaging-
Both two-dimensional and three-dimensional soundstaging was excellent on the MTPC, especially compared to the large majority of IEMs. Imaging was also very good, though it suffered a bit compared to my Etymotic IEMs due to the slight lack of detail in the treble region.Overall-
The key word to describing the MTPC's sound signature and quality is balance. Unlike just about any other earphone I have had the pleasure of listening to, the MTPC, though focused on bass, does not fall tremendously short in any one area. The magnificent soundstage and imaging with a wonderful musicality made listening to the MTPC was a very enjoyable experience.Summary:
