HP iPAQ 5450 Color Pocket PC Review

There are alot of bad comments floating around about the 5450 at the moment. I got one pretty early and I want to voice my opinion.
1st thing this thing looks AWESOME. forget the size of the 1910 because this looks sleek and stylish....it looks smaller than it actually is.
second is the speed. its not really slow at all; same speed as 3950 clicking about, and yes its a few frames slower in games.
now onto the good points :) the bluetooth wizard is a snap and i connected to my t68 in a few minutes. the wifi is also simple once u understand how it works, and the signal is as good as a laptop card! however it does kill the battery pretty quick.
next thing; the battery; its **slightly** lower than the 3950 but only slightly shorter operating time. it is also removable and hp offer a high capacity battery. the great thing about it is that the screen is **soo** bright its unbelievable; i never need it higher than the lowest backlight setting (one above none) because its so bright so i get about 5 or 6 hours life. if u turn the backlight off completely (which u can in some situations) u get around 7 to 8 hours life.
the sound is slightly lower than the 3950 but its not like you need it that loud anyway. i listen to music pretty loud and i never turned it up to full volume.
the biometric feature is AWESOME once u get the hang, its great playing with it when u are bored :)
the dpad is a bit stiff to begin with but once u get used to it and it loosens up it gets more usable - a bit small but i prefer it to the old ipaqs.
i have 2 negative points:
1. the case that comes with it will scratch the finish on the ipaq if u take it on and off. so leave it either always off (and get a new case or none at all) or LEAVE IT ON (i left mine on) or u will ruin the finish on your ipaq.
2. the video and game speed - its bareable (nowhere near as bad as e740) but a bit slower than previous ipaqs. hp are addressing this as i type and once the new driver comes out the 5450 will be the fastest model out so far.
also in the future you can use this ipaq as a phone aswell. how do i know? well there is a sim card slot behind the battery, and it uses a cut down version of pocket pc 2002 phone edition - so in the future there should be something to allow you to use it as a phone!!
all in all an awesome product well worth the money; head and shoulders about the toshiba, the dell and the rest. if u have the money BUY it u will not regret it. there are a couple of dodgy ones floating around (with bad screen speed and wifi) but u can return it if u get one
BUY IT BUY IT BUY IT!!

Pros
Great overall value for your money, especially if you buy online.
WiFi, Bluetooth, WM5, FAST processor!
Cons
Not SVGA, but I'm sure this helps the systems current performance! It's FAST! Might be a little pricey, but it fit my needs perfectly, and I'm willing to pay the higher end for a dependable device.
The Bottom Line
This device suites me perfectly. I understand that everyone has their own needs, but this has everything I need plus more. It's dependable when used as described.
Full Review
I have searched and read at least 15 websites for reviews on this product, and was not surprised to see several of these web-sites with the same two people giving it a bad review. It's my experience that many people start using the device and critiquing it only when they experience problems, and don't ever decide to consult the user manual to find specific instructions on how to perform the operation they desire.
The hx2795 is replacing an old 3600 series iPaq. I generally use mine for GPS related work and the hx2795 has performed better than expected for me.
Right out of the box, my battery had 94% battery life, and I used it off and on for two days after I bought it without needing to charge the battery (although the battery may not condition properly if you follow my example).
When not using my GPS, and use it moderately throughout the day, I tend to run at 20% battery life left after 3 to 4 days. Once I plug the charger in, it will have a full charge within 3 to 4 hours!
My IBM T42p laptop w/ bluetooth made for an easy and wireless ActiveSync. I synced my Outlook 2003 contacts, email, tasks and calendar without any hitch. I'm not sure why other people in the reviews of this device had problems, but as I stated earlier... read the directions. It's in there and tells you exactly how to do it, as well as tells you what to do if you do run into problems. Very detailed instructions, as well as on ActiveSync's website!!!
I have a linksys portable wireless router that I was able to configure the hx2795 against. Configuration was quick and trouble free. Internet seemed to be just as fast as using my home desktop computer.
I purchased Pocket CoPilot 6 w/ wireless bluetooth GPS receiver, and once again, worked flawlessely right out of the box.
Since I have had the device, I have had to soft reset only 5 times within a month and a half. And 2 of the times was because of incompatible Pocket PC 2002 software I was trying to load. This is very comparable to my Palm Treo 650 that I have had for a year as far as soft resets.I did run out of battery a few days back for the first time. I bought a new RhinoSkin leather case and it didn't fit quite right, and was pressing down on one of the keys, leaving it on over night. But the persistent battery kept all my data safe, and didn't need to re-sync all my data. I turned on the key-lock after that incident.
Overall, this is a very good purchase! I would do it again.

Make travel time enjoyable and productive, stay in touch with friends and colleagues, and perform all your essential business tasks away from the office with the HP iPaq HX2190 Pocket PC. The HX2190 lets you connect wirelessly and securely to e-mail servers, mobile messaging services, the Internet, and company networks while eating at a cafe, staying at a hotel, or killing time at a train station or airport, as long as the business is equipped with a WiFi hot spot. As a result, it's never been easier to work on important Microsoft Word or Excel docs while traveling or trade e-mails with business partners--all without hauling along a cumbersome laptop. Add in the ability to watch video, listen to music, and access your PC-based calendar and you have an ideal device for the modern on-the-go professional.
The HX2190 comes preloaded with Microsoft's Windows Mobile 5.0 operating system, which includes updated Microsoft Office Mobile software and persistent memory storage for more efficient data management. The Office Mobile Suite comprises Word Mobile for text documents, Excel Mobile for viewing and creating charts, and PowerPoint Mobile for viewing and giving presentations on the go. Users will also dig Windows Mobile's ActiveSync 4.0, which helps them quickly and securely transfer information from their PC/servers to the Pocket PC and vice versa. Want to export your address book, calendar, and other items to the HX2190? Not a problem with ActiveSync 4.0. Other Windows Mobile features include an integrated multimedia application (Windows Media Player 10), multiple personalization options, Pocket MSN for one-click access to MSN Hotmail and MSN Messenger, and a function called Persistent Store, which safeguards your data even when the HX2190's battery is removed.
The HX2190 is loaded under the hood, too, or--more accurately--under the flip cover. The device boasts a solid 312 MHz Intel XScale processor that's quick and responsive, along with 64 MB of RAM and 128 MB of flash ROM. The unit is also expandable via its integrated CompactFlash type II (CF) and Secure Digital (SDIO) slots, which work with such media as MicroDrives, CF GPS, SD 56k modem cards, and traditional memory cards. And like most Pocket PCs, the iPaq HX2190 supports both wireless WiFi (802.11b) and Bluetooth technologies, while also offering a standard IR port and a USB sync ports. Not only do the technologies support both standard wireless and wired connections for data transfers and online activity, but they also let you use many wireless peripherals, such as Bluetooth keyboards.
And because the HX2190 is a business-oriented device, it's outfitted with HP ProtectTools, a security-oriented option that allows mobile users to secure devices by PIN or password to control access. The industry-standard encryption then protects stored data from prying eyes and online thieves.
Other details include a 3.5-inch transflective TFT display with 64,000 colors, a rechargeable lithium-ion battery with a charging cradle, and an ergonomic, easy-to-wield design. The HX2190 measures 4.71 by 3.01 by 0.65 inches (W x H x D) and is backed by a one-year warranty on parts and labor.
What's in the Box iPaq HX2190 Pocket PC, lithium-ion battery, AC adapter, charger adapter, stylus, protective plastic flip cover, USB synchronization cable, Getting Started guide, HP iPaq Pocket PC Companion CD, "How Do I...?" guide, user's manual.
